LETTER FROM YOUR LTG | 02

Hello Suns, Welcome back to another edition of the Yellow Pages and CONGRATS on completing the first Quarter of out term. I hope that you are making the most of your summer and going outside to enjoy the shining sun! I would like to remind you that Key Club and service doesn’t stop during the summer, so BEE sure that you are staying updated on what your club and the division has in-store. Now that the majority of high schoolers have received their vaccine, in-person events are viable to happen again! The wait has finally been over and I can’t wait to see all of your beautiful faces again on July 31st! To attend, you will either need to prove that you are vaccinated or take a COVID test to verify that you aren’t showing symptoms. This will be our first in-person DCM in a long time, so BEE sure you follow safety guidelines and stay updated so that the event can run as smoothly as possible. Now that we’ve accomplished out first Quarter, I would like to thank you for all the hard work and effort that each of you have put in since the beginning of the term. Although we didn’t start off on the right foot, all of you have never failed to surprise me with what we can accomplish if we serve together. Division 30 South, I hope you never forget that there is no other division like you and I am more than honored to serve dedicated, passionate individuals like you. With Much Love,

chri ina nguyen

r e c a p This month’s De-stress into Summer DCM was held on May 22nd at 3:00 PM. It was a short 2 hour DCM that consisted of our usual DCM activities, a plethora of breakout rooms in which anyone could join whichever they felt like, and our closing remarks/goodbyes to one another. To begin with, the DCM started at around 3:05 to allow late stragglers to not miss out on our DCM. Christina took attendance of the schools, we did the Key club and Pledge of Allegiance, introduction of guests, a quick “How are AP tests going” icebreaker, and then continued on with events and recognition of members, officers, and advisors. This went on until 3:25 so for about 20 minutes, we were given a 5 minute intermission, and then finally entered our preferential breakout room at 3:30. As I had an exam coming up, I joined the study/ quiet room. It was a great way to study, especially with peers in similar situations who would give you comfort and spread positivity. I studied for a good 15 minutes and then went on to take my exam. After one hour and 10 minutes of nail biting, hair pulling, and a bit of crying, I had finally finished my exam. I turned it in, and to my surprise I had gotten a perfect score, and the breakout room session of the DCM was beginning to end. After 1 hour and 25 of being in that breakout room, my final assignment of my dual enrollment class was over, and I was finally free from the struggles of learning biotechnology. At 4:55 PM, the DCM was finally ending. We said our goodbyes for these last few minutes, and the DCM was finally adjourned at 5:00 PM. Overall, I would say it was a great event. There was a great variety of breakout rooms which was incredibly helpful, and I heard that a lot of people had an amazing time. A few members from my club even said that it was really fun, and that they looked forward to going to more events since it was some people’s first DCM. I personally ended off the DCM in an amazing mood since I did well on my final exam and was able to participate in our May DCM, and still work on schoolwork in an effective and efficient manner.

07 | ARTICLE: WHAT IS THE PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PROGRAM?

what is the PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PROGRAM? SAADHVI NARAYANAN | WHITNEY KEY CLUB

| 08

This year, due to the pandemic, it is even harder to help fundraise for those in need, especially young children suffering pediatric trauma. So what is the Pediatric Trauma Program, and how can we help?

WHAT IS PEDIATRIC TRAUMA ?

Pediatric trauma, the leading cause of death in children and young infants, occurs when a child or infant experiences a severe injury. Depending on the injury, a child may be forced to endure mental and physical disabilities. After experiencing this children are said to only have a 25% chance of survival after experiencing trauma. Doctors fear to confront Pediatric Trauma, for it may not even be able to be cured. Within the past year, over 175,000 children have experienced pediatric trauma from injuries and over 9,000 were killed. This balances to the rate of 1 child taken for every hour.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM ?

Recent graphs and studies show that the fight to stop pediatric trauma is poorly supported. Within just the United States, only 39 pediatric trauma hospitals exist. Adding to this, pediatric trauma research receives 18 cents from the federal government. This, once again, is small compared to the 17 dollars cancer research receives. Without the financial support, there is no way to provide the medical support needed for the young children to recover, such as scans, treatment, and more.

HOW CAN YOU HELP ?

We may not be able to physically save lives in a hospital, but we can help aid in research by donating. Donating to organizations that support the Pediatric Trauma, such as the Pediatric Trauma Program, can assist the children. This money goes toward building hospitals and funding research. One can also prevent accidents by practicing general safety rules, such as wearing helmets during bike rides, walking on the crosswalks and keeping off the road, and even alerting others when their safety is jeopardized.

09 | ARTICLE: WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN KEY CLUB

Key Club is always free for you to join, but why should you join your school’s Key Club in the first place? This is a question many may wonder when first being introduced with the idea of joining Key Club and there are actually many reasons why joining is an amazing opportunity. Not only is it a safe space for everyone but it also a way to help serve your community!

Our Key Clubs are always welcoming new members with a supportive board and tight-knit community. One of the members of the John F. Kennedy High School’s Key Club, Mikayla Luu, comments, “Key Club is somewhere you can focus on taking care of others because everyone is already taking care of you. In fact, the joy you gain is joy everyone gains.” Personally, I have also felt the love and friendliness when joining Key Club, that was brought by everyone involved. I have made so many friendships that would’ve never occurred if not for me joining Key Club and it has only been my first year in! There has also never been a feeling of being scared to contact anyone once you have talked to them for the first time. Of course, it is normal to have that slight nervousness bubble in your stomach, but I can assure you that there are so many people who let those bubbles fade and dissipate! It is such a fun experience for you, not only to make a whole bunch of new friends but also to meet some people that you would have otherwise never interacted with. Key Club is not only about meeting new people, of course. It is also about serving and helping out the community. Although I cannot speak from personal experience, as I have entered during the time of the pandemic, I can assure anyone who is questioning the legitimacy of the amount of “fun” you can have during a service event that they do create amazing memories! Just from hearing about them from my fellow officers, I can once again affirm that these service activities leave permanent marks in one’s mind, in a positive way of course. However, other than the fun you also get to help out different parts of your community! Whether it be from food banks or beach clean-ups you can feel good about the hard work you have put in to get these service hours. Once again, I would like to reiterate just how much Key Club has meant to me in the year that I have been a part of it. There are so many special friendships I have made with both upperclassmen and underclassmen through Key Club that will last with me through all my years in high school. I also have something to look forward to, even during the summertime where I find myself wondering what I should do for the whole day. Serving our community also leaves a very proud feeling in my mind knowing that I am helping the group of people I am part of! So, why should you join Key Club? Simply put, it’s fun and rewarding! I hope that you may give Key Club a thought or get others to think about also joining Key Club to be a part of this amazing family!

WESTERN KEY CLUB

PRESIDENT’S PROFILE name: NICHOLAS DINH school: WESTERN KEY CLUB class: 2022 Hello D30S, my name is Nicholas Dinh and I am proudly serving as Western Highschool’s president. This term I hope to serve in the best way we can and help build our community together. I’m excited in bringing joy to others while loving the job I do. The memories, relationships, and interactions will all be key items in the future. Hope to see all of you around!

- fun facts 1. I am a big fan and enthusiast of journalism and writing 2. I run my own website called the Popcorn Bucket which covered all things cinema. 3. I also dabble in 3D modeling and developing for projects whether it be a game or animation.

what made you want to be president? Being president was ultimately the goal with each small step I took until my senior year. It allows you to make important decisions that could affect the club’s outcome and the members that reside in it. I knew Western needed a successor and I didn’t know a better candidate besides two people. One of them was me.

why did you join key club? I originally joined Key Club because I wanted to get more involved at my school. Interestingly enough, I was afraid of the so-called yellow cult and strongly believed there would be nothing on the planet Earth to make me join the club. However, after attending one event, my whole life changed and not only did Key Club become a huge part of my memories, but so did the people I met within Key Club too.

what do you love most about your club? The people that have surrounded me whether it be older or younger. The people I found myself caring about more than myself.

When I spoke with a good friend, Vicky Vu, whom I never knew before but learned to love.

My goals for this term is to volunteer and raise a ton of service hours. My ultimate goal is to wrap up my Key Club journey with a happy ending.

when was your key club moment?

what are your goals for the 2021-2022 term?

From May to June, Western has raised $109 in charities, more than 750+ hours, and countless service projects and service weeks that our members engaged in. Furthermore, we also had a fun social with Cypress Key Club watching Shrek and coordinated with organizations helping reboot in-person communication. For July, Western is planning on having a special 4th of July event and are planning to work on an updated website. Furthermore, Western will be getting board pictures taken care of, along with merchandise. The usual fundraising and volunteering will continue with more in-person experiences.

KEEP UP WITH WESTERN! CONTACT THE PRESIDENT!
