A LETTER FROM YOUR

division news editor H ello Suns!

Have you guys been enjoying your summer break? For me, this is pretty much the last summer break I have as a high school student so I'm trying to enjoy it as much as I can. My trip to Japan in June was fantastic and I have fallen in love with the country and its culture. I do wish I had more time to enjoy the various cities we visited and I regret not buying more souvenirs. On the other hand, I find August to be a dreadful yet exciting month because I have to return to school. I'm looking forward to seeing new and old faces, but I am not looking forward to the workload I have. I am also looking forward to attending Fall Rally this year. Surprisingly enough, it will be my very first and last time going. I've heard so many good things about this event and how much fun people have had so I have very excited to finally attend! And as always, keep shining Suns!

A LETTER FROM YOUR

lieutenant governor

What’s Poppin’ 30 South!

June was an exciting month for our division as we broke records with our service hours. Our division served 2,923 hours for the month of June, and I could not have been prouder to serve 30 South. We are the division that has the most attendance at events, serves the most hours, and is the most passionate. As we progress into the club rush, fall Rally, and dues season, I hope you all remember how incredibly valued you are as a Division 30 South Key Clubber. Let's keep shining bright as we progress more and more into the term! Thank you all for your service and dedication! Remember to always reach out to me through messenger or email if you ever have any questions, comments, or just want to talk! See you all at August DCM!

JUNE DCM: PROJE

Anh Cao || Western June marks the end of the first quarter! In celebration, I attended the June DCM held at Kennedy High School. At this DCM, LTG Anjika gave a presentation on the Happiness Project. I learned that happiness is something you gain by implementing small habits into your daily life that help you feel happier in the long run. After listening to the presentation, I thought about what I could do to make me feel happier. One of which is listening to more music. I found that I felt more relaxed and less stressed after doing so. Another one is to spend more time with my parents since I am always on my phone. I haven’t seen any improvements yet as they are working most of the time, but I hope I get closer to my parents. The last one is to own a pet. I've begged my parents for a dog but due to their disapproval of one, I opted for plants instead. While they can’t accompany me like a pet, I love plants as much as they love the sun. I found myself devoting my time to planting and watering them. As time went by, I saw them grow and I felt very accomplished and happy. Currently, I have 9 plants and I call them my "pets" because I love them as much as a pet. They each

ECT HAPPINESS

Timmy Bui || Oxford The turnout at the DCM was unexpectedly high that we couldn't all fit in one room! We held the DCM outside but luckily avoided the sun with the help of a few canopies. My president Vina Nguyen did one of the pledges and I felt so proud of her. Additionally, Oxford Key Club won the spirit stick, which was pretty cool, but its head broke off because of Vina's klutziness. (Just kidding!) The spirit stick was still cute and I'm pleased that our efforts have paid off. Anjika gave a little presentation about the Happiness Project. Essentially, the organization is focused on helping people discover what makes them happy! This is pretty meaningful because, in an environment like today where stress accumulates and discourages growing kids, people can lose themselves. They forget about their own happiness. This project reminded me of how much happiness should be prioritized. But enough with the deep talk! There was a multitude of activities so we always had something to do. For instance, there was a cardboard cutout of a heart on the wall. We were asked to write the things that make us happy on sticky notes to place on that heart. Additionally, we created "happy boards," which were small boards filled with words and images of the things that made others happy. We also played a couple of rounds of Indian Chief as an icebreaker before finishing it off with some simple book cleaning and repairing.

august focus background Since 1946, Key Club International has encouraged members to focus on our Major Emphasis — “Children: Their Future, Our Focus.”We must provide children with the education they need to ensure that kids all around the world have a great future awaiting them. During the month of August, we should remember to focus on increasing all children's access to education and improving its quality. By working together as a district, there is no limit to what we can accomplish!

Education 14

Event Ideas School Supply Drive With summer break coming to a close, you can organize a school supply drive to donate unused school supplies or backpacks you may have at home to the youth in your community! First, find a location preferably somewhere convenient for members to drop off their unused school supplies, such as your local library or high school and contact the place 2-3 weeks in advance to ask if you may hold the drive there. Once you have the date, time, and location settled, start promoting your event using posters and social media! On the day of the drive, have several club members, officers, and advisors help set up any necessary equipment such as tables, posters, signs, boxes, etc. 1-2 hours prior to the event start time. Throughout the duration of the drive, be kind and welcoming to those who pass by, regardless of whether or not they are donating. Also, if you would like to extend the drive you may leave donation boxes at the site. Once the drive is over, collect all the boxes and donate them to your local School on Wheels site or any other organizations that accept donations.

Library Visit Key Clubbers can go to their local library and volunteer there by doing an assortment of things including cleaning up and reading to kids. Club representatives should contact their library to ask about setting up an event at the library such as having Key Clubbers read books to the children. If there were two to three Key Clubbers for each group of 10 kids spread throughout the library, clubs of different sizes can carry out this project by adjusting the number of Key Clubbers working with the groups as the number of kids increases. This could be a weekly event where Key Clubbers come and read to the kids in the community.

15

fundraiser Ideas Bingo Night While this event is called a “BINGO Night it could also feature board games that help develop children’s critical thinking skills. There could be stations where parents and kids in the community can come to participate in different games that are education-themed, such as Scrabble. This will take a lot of advertising, but could work if the Kiwanians help advertise it to the community for participation. In addition to admission, clubs can also earn money by selling food, drinks, or having a raffle.

Jeopardy Night One of the best ways to raise money for charity while educating people is by having a Jeopardy Night. During the event, a club can charge a small entry fee and sell snacks, participants will create teams then send one representative to try and answer each question. To hold this event, a club must have a few bells or buzzers for players to hit when they wish to answer a question, a board with 6 topics and at least 5 questions for each topic, a prize for the winning team, a couple of tables and chairs for teams and to sell snacks, and a large room for the event to be held in. It is suggested to make the topics simple so younger children can answer, and to have the event at a school so more people will attend. Make sure to have a few volunteers to manage the program, sell snacks, and adults to chaperone the event and manage money. In the end, a Jeopardy Night can be a great method to raise money while teaching children in the process!

What is your favo My favorite thing about DLT is definitely the family that you experience within this team. Serving as a home club officer last term helped me realize the tight knit family you feel when you are a part of the Key Club board. Serving this term in DLT so far helped me to immediately experience the family by meeting all the officers every month for our DLT meeting. Everyone is so friendly and passionate about their position, it motivates me to also do my best in every aspect of my duties as a Division Historian. Whenever we meet up for our meetings or even when we arrive early to plan DCM’s, I truly enjoy working together as a team, whether it is me taking pictures, the Spirit Coordinators are hosting icebreakers, or even when the hardworking Division News Editor arranges the newsletter articles you are reading now, every officer plays an important part in the Division Leadership Team. L-O-V-E I LOVE MY DLT!

Being a part of the Division Leadership Team is truly an honor as I am able to serve Division 30 South at a higher level. Just that makes me content and allows me to create a larger, more powerful impact on the organization as a whole. Being on DLT or club board allows you to influence more people and you are further able to see the impact you make within the organization. As a general member, I never really understood the idea that going to service events could make a difference. However, as a DLT member I am able to see that just going to a service event, as little as it may seem, makes a huge difference in the outside world. That’s my favorite part about DLT, being able to understand the world of volunteering on a deeper level. Just knowing this motivates me to push forward and try to make this organization even better, because there is no apex in how magnificent Key Club can be, as it is forever growing.

patrick Yang, Fundraising 18

When it comes to being part of the DLT, my favorite part is being able to help in the behind-the-scenes process of events! In the position I serve, I get to help and work to create the envisioned goal and outcome in mind for the division, and I love that I get to be a part of the journey for the term! I enjoy being part of the DLT because I get to be a part of the operation behind the curtains of an event, and I also get a better understanding of what it’s like serving a dedicated division. As part of the team, I work with the officers on board and get to bond with many of them, so when I see the hard work they've put in, I’m thrilled I get to work with them and see their efforts. I feel impossibly more appreciative of our DLT every time! When working behindthe-scenes, I also get the chance to genuinely see how much effort the members put into service that they might not realize themselves, and so I'm thankful for all the members' work1 Along with the planning, it feels rewarding to see the positive turnout of events and watching people enjoy what the DLT, including myself, have planned. I especially love seeing the smiles on people’s faces at events and hearing positive feedback such as that the members enjoyed it. Overall, I can’t describe the amazing feeling of working with a radiant team and seeing the turnout of our work!
