A LETTER FROM YOUR
division news editor Hello Suns!
February is finally here! And that’s a sign that District Convention (aka DCON) is coming up soon as clubs begin to sign up members for this massive, end-of-the-term event. This year, DCON will be taking place at the Ontario Convention Center from April 12th to 14th. I’ve never been to DCON since I always thought that it was too expensive, but I’ve heard such wonderful things about the convention that I cannot wait to attend this year! Surprisingly, this term has been one of many “firsts” for me. I will definitely miss Key Club when I graduate from high school and begin to attend college. This club has really helped me open up. I’ve made so many fond memories and friends in this club that I’ll never forget. I can only hope that I’ll be able to keep in contact with everyone after high school And as always, keep shining Suns!

A LETTER FROM YOUR
lieutenant governor
What’s Poppin’ 30 South! Can you believe we are at the second to last month of the 2018-2019 term?! Thank you for giving me the best 10 months I could ask for. We achieved so much, and it is all because of the hard work and dedication of the shining members and officers of 30 South (aka, YOU!) For these last few months, I truly want to focus on division unity and service. This term we worked with CHOC, Project Happiness, Think Together, YANA, and more. I want to continue highlighting service, so please attend our Division Service Day! Also, I have many socials planned from our annual Ice Skating Social, to new ones like a D30 Movie Night and a D30S Picnic. Lastly, Distract Convention is coming up and this year it is close-by in Ontario! This event is truly eye-opening and will change your key club experience. Let's sprint to the finish line and end this year just as great as we started it. I love you Suns!
Shining with service, Anjika Morari

ROSE FLOAT DECORATING DECEMBER 29, 2018 Some worked on floats like this
5
Tracy Vu || Oxford Academy This year was my last time volunteering for the Rose Float Decorating, and I was pleasantly surprised at how many underclassmen showed up to this event. It’s refreshing to see new faces at our events, especially the annual division volunteers. It was really cold in the morning, so there were several people wearing 2 to 3 layers of sweaters or jackets; however, it did warm up throughout the event. At the volunteer, members are either working with the vials and flowers or working on the actual rose float themselves. My friends and I went to stick flowers on the float. The float had limited spacing for people to be on the scaffolding so my friends and I split into 2 groups. We all had a blast in the end because it was like a chain system that made our work faster and smoother. I highly recommend members to come out to this event with their friends because working together on something so grand is exciting and lots of funny moments can happen. It is super rewarding when we see the rose floats appear on television because it’s like, “Hey I worked on that float!” and you know that your efforts didn't go to waste.

Hope Food Distribution
Tobi Yao || Oxford Academy For every key clubber at Oxford, Whitney, Kennedy, or Cypress, Hope Food Distribution is a staple volunteering event that occurs every other Saturday. It takes place at St. Irenaeus, and volunteers pass out food to people who are in need. We normally get large numbers of volunteers for this event; there are regulars who attend every week, and others who are starting attend Key Club events. For the Christmas season, there was a twoweek process that I got to be a part of. On the first Saturday of December, volunteers packed large boxes full of canned and dry food such as soups, boxed macaroni, cake mix, and canned fruit. Everyone worked together quickly in a line, and we were able to quickly make food boxes for 175 families. The organizers even tried to show their thankfulness to the volunteers by preparing breakfast for them. It was very uplifting to see everyone working together in the holiday spirit. The following week, everyone was encouraged to dress up in their Christmas gear: ugly sweaters, Santa hats, reindeer antlers, and scarves. We passed out those boxes along with a
7
variety of food that would normally not be there such as frozen meat, toys for the kids, and even a pancake breakfast set up by the Kiwanis across the parking lot. The turn up was more than I had ever seen at a Hope Food Distribution before. Regulars lit up when they saw the new items and were eager to say thanks and wish the volunteers happy holidays. We normally finish around nine, but we had people coming through the line till ten this time. Everyone working at the pizza section planned to say “Happy Holidays!” in unison whenever they handed out a pizza, and I could tell that the people who received it were amused by the silly greeting. One of my freshman friends from school came out to her first Key Club volunteering event, and I was glad to see that she was having fun seeing smiles on the people she gave to. When I asked if she would ever come back to volunteer again, she answered: “Yeah, of course!” The Hope Food Distribution has a spirit of giving all year long; however, the Christmas season emphasizes that and brings out new volunteers who want to give back to their community.
Kiwanis Gift Wrapping
Anh Tran || John F. Kennedy Every year, the Kiwanis Club of La Palma, John F. Kennedy Key Club’s Sponsoring Kiwanis Club, prepares holiday boxes filled with necessities for families in need around our community. These boxes usually include canned foods, a turkey, and other necessities that would provide a family a decent holiday dinner. Annually, our club would help the Kiwanis by holding a canned food drive. However, our club was able to take a more active role in helping the Kiwanis prepare these holiday boxes this year.
Volunteers from our club would wrap these care boxes in festive wrapping paper to give them the image of a gift for these families in need. The event not only allowed our members to work and bond in a cozy environment but also allowed us to get to know the Kiwanians a lot more as well. Overall, the event was a great opportunity for our members and our club looks forward to taking a larger role in the Kiwanis Food Drive new year!

What is your favo Being a part of the Division Leadership Team is surreal. Ever since I was a freshman, I was constantly amazed by the group of motivated individuals who were in charged of putting together such successful events. Since I’m the president of Loara, I automatically got the opportunity to be a part of DLT, and it’s been a rollercoaster since April. From helping coordinate events to DCMs, my favorite part of DLT is forming relationships with other officers from different schools-especially other presidents- who share the same passions as me. I love talking about Key Club festivities with my DLT members because we all end up being really excited for future events such as DCON! For all you sunshines out there, make sure to highly consider being a part of DLT or even your home club. Key Club offers opportunities that you won’t find anywhere else, until next time key-uties!

My favorite part of DLT is working together with leaders coming from different backgrounds. All members, no matter how big their responsibilities are on the team, play a vital in the division's success. With our different perspectives, skills, and personalities, we come together stronger as a whole, as an effective division leadership team. I always look forward to coming to DLT meetings and division events, because I get the opportunity to meet these members who I do not get to meet often on a daily basis. These DLT members with vibrant personalities and a passion for Key Club constantly drive me to work harder everyday and become a better version of myself. Thank you to everyone on DLT. You all have my whole heart.
Vina Nguyen, Oxford Academy President 16
Having the opportunity to serve along other leaders who share the same passion about key club is something amazing. Being in the DLT group, I get to serve along others from different schools who teach me new things every day. As time goes on, we build a strong relationship that lasts forever and becomes strong day after day. Furthermore, I got to learn specific skills such as communication and networking just by taking part of this great team that works extremely hard to maintain the presence of our division. Indeed, division 30 South’s team taught me the meaning of having a second family that I can rely on when I need help.
