Room to Roam: Explore the Outdoors in KC

After countless Zoom calls, takeout deliveries and tons of TV bingeing, the lure of the great outdoors is greater than ever!

“There’s almost nothing you can’t do around here,” says Cori Culp. Her company, Locale, provides insider intel and tours of KC to candidates and new hires at companies in the region. Many, she notes, are “blown away” by the expanse of easily accessible outdoor activities.

Take parks — Kansas City, Missouri, alone has 213 of them. Everything from pocket parks to Swope Park, one of the largest urban greenspaces in the country.

In addition, communities on both sides of the state line also offer dozens of picnic-perfect spots and pleasant places to stroll or toss a frisbee.

Looking for a more rigorous route to hike or bike? The Riverfront Heritage Trail, Mill Creek Streamway Trail and Indian Creek Parkway Trail are just a few options of the many that traverse every corner of the metro and beyond.

The most recent addition is Rock Island Trail. Starting near Arrowhead Stadium, it links to the Katy Trail, which runs across Missouri all the way to St. Louis.

If you need some “elbow room” to unwind, stunning state parks and campgrounds can be found nearby. Like Weston Bend, perched on the

bluffs of the Missouri River, or Watkins Mill State Park — complete with a historic mill next door. Just to the west, Kansas’ Flint Hills harbor the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.

Did someone say water? Smithville Lake offers kayak and paddle boat rentals. As does the lake at Shawnee Mission Park, Lake Olathe Park, Blue Springs Lake and more. Cast a line at Lake Jacomo or hit the beach at Longview Lake.

People who expect the KC region to be “nothing but flat,” Cori says, get a big surprise. The limestone bluffs along Kessler Park’s Cliff Drive provide a real rock-climbing challenge inside the city.

Limestone also helped forge what she calls “world-class” mountain bike trails. A personal favorite traces a route along the Blue River in Swope Park — but others like the loop at Hidden Valley Park in the Northland bring challenges of their own.

Because we see four distinct seasons, most of these locations yield dramatically different experiences at different times of the year.

Naturally, a few do have limited windows. The outdoor ice rinks at Crown Center and Park Place are skateable only during winter. The Snow Creek Ski Area is another seasonal site. Its slopes may be modest, but are just the right size to hone your winter sports skills! n

With 15,000+ tech businesses – from fastscaling startups like PayIt to global leaders like Garmin – it’s no wonder the KC region ranks third in the nation – behind only Austin and San Francisco – in technology job creation for 2020.

WFH with ease: The KC region is a top place for remote workers based on Internet connectivity, cost-of-living and access to coworking spaces according to PCMag, HighSpeedInternet.net, Business Insider and others.

Startups take off: With accelerator programs like TechStars KC, funding sources like LaunchKC and expert guidance from the KC-based Kauffman Foundation leading the way, KC ranks as a top city for both startup growth and survival. Built-in creativity: As a global center of excellence for architecture and engineering, KC firms produce impactful work. For example, nearly three out of every four modern sporting venues across the U.S. are designed by KC firms, as are 20 percent of the world’s water systems. A healthy focus: From diagnostic and surgical innovations to cutting-edge research, KC is a recognized hub for healthcare. In 2021, Children’s Mercy Research Institute opened a state-of-the-art

facility dedicated to accelerating discoveries related to complex childhood diseases. At the Stowers Institute, scientists and researchers work to better understand human health. She’s Bringing Tiki Back

Diana Condori is bringing tiki back. And she’s incorporating her Bolivian culture into the cocktails she makes, pouring diversity into KC’s bar scene.

“It’s a chance to share the history of my culture and my story by having conversations about the ingredients I use or the decorations I use,” said the Condor’s Cove mobile-bar founder.

What started as a one-time pop-up bar experience turned out to be a business opportunity for Diana to help tiki thrive in KC.

Now, the liquid chef is guest starring at soldout pop-ups throughout the metro while raising her voice about the need for more representation in the service industry and spreading awareness about her heritage.

“I grew up in this industry and now having my own business I’ve had the opportunity to take leaps of faith. I believe in myself more and I really want to represent women and Hispanic culture and people of color in this industry,” says Diana.

Since launching Condor’s Cove in 2020, she has been featured in industry publications for its skyrocketing success.

Diana credits a lot of her business success to the collaborative nature of Kansas City, dubbing it a great place to start a business.

“KC is all about community and supporting each other. There’s a lot of people trying to make it and we’re all excited about creating new opportunities and partnering,” she says.

“It’s been a ride; I was not ready for it! I thought it was going to be a cute pop-up and now we have a lot of bars that want to work with us and people who want to help us with merchandise. It’s insane!” n

Big Dreams Begin at Home

Donald Hawkins doesn’t mind if you call him a “serial entrepreneur.”

“I think of it as someone who locates pain points and helps find ways to relieve them,” he explains. Donald has played that role in various fields — healthcare, fashion, tech and now banking.

In 2021, Donald and his team launched First Boulevard Bank –– a digital-only neobank offering economic tools to better serve the Black community. And ultimately bridge the wealth gap that has developed over decades.

“We’re building our ancestors’ wildest dreams,” he smiles.

A native of Albany, Georgia, Donald lived in Atlanta before moving to Overland Park four years ago with his wife and two children. He finds the pace here a little slower, making KC the ideal location for maximizing his career — and life — goals.

“My focus right now is on my family, and this is such a great place for that,” he says.

It’s not just the community that gives that confidence. Donald is also impressed by the area’s efforts in education, and innovations like the Blue Valley CAPS Program.

In his leisure time, Donald says he seldom misses a Sporting KC home game and when football season rolls around, he cheers for his Chiefs.

He’s also a big fan of KC’s food scene, particularly at Rye KC and Parlor in the Crossroads — a great place for noshing over someone’s notion of a project worth pursuing.

“I’ve met some of the nicest people here, and they’re really open to ideas,” he says. “You can get ingrained in this town really quickly!” n

Meant to Be: Growing in KC

When Meg Knauth tells her Kansas City story, it’s full of choices that put her in the right place at the right time.

One of those right times came when, while focused on pre-med in college, Meg discovered a love for computer programming that landed her a post-graduation job with Cerner in North Kansas City.

Then, on her very first weekend after moving to KC, she attended the Crawdad Festival with some coworkers and met her future husband. Both consultants for Cerner, Meg says they were committed to getting to know their adopted city.

“From the beginning, we tried everything in KC because we knew we wanted to make it our home,” Meg says. “What we discovered is a cool city with a low cost of living that’s a great place to raise a family.”

Alongside learning about the region, Meg gained opportunities to explore her career. She was hired as the first non-executive employee in the IT department for the startup, Sprint PCS. Twenty-four years and a couple of mergers and acquisitions later, Meg is now the Vice President of IT Development for T-Mobile.

Connecting with the community happens naturally in KC, Meg says. For her, it grew through involvement in her church, her two sons’ soccer talents and her experiences as part of the Centurions Leadership Program.

Today, Meg’s rich KC story includes chapters on everything from volunteering with Project Uplift and enjoying the First Friday art scene to engaging in the region’s wide range of recreational activities, such as hiking, biking and paddleboarding at Shawnee Mission Park. n

Recent Grad Grows Roots in the Heartland

Eion Hindsman-Curry could have landed anywhere to start his new life chapter. The recent Morehouse College graduate’s resume is impressive, boasting several research stints and degrees in applied physics and mechanical engineering.

With a packed car and no prior network in the KC region, Eion drove 10 hours from Atlanta to begin his career as a mechanical design engineer at KC-based Henderson Engineers. To date, Eion says he’s yet to have a negative interaction with a Kansas Citian.

Upon his arrival, Eion developed a fast group of friends. It seems they’ve made it their mission to introduce him to the very best of KC — from food and music to disc golf, which has become Eion’s favorite pastime. His favorite spot to “frolf” is the Blue Valley West Golf Course.

The 24-year-old is a proud regular at Aoyama Ramen, even striking up a friendship with the ramen shop’s manager. He also quickly became a fan of his new home’s pro sports, attending NASCAR races at Kansas Speedway, Royals games and Sporting KC matches.

Eion is a longtime fan of producer and rapper, Tech N9ne. He says the KC music legend is an integral inspiration to his own music under the stage name, “Isaiah Curry,” calling the style “hip-hop with a rock edge.”

Eion plans to complete his fundamentals of engineering certificate, with the broader goal of becoming a professional engineer or a project leader.

“I’m just really happy to be here in Kansas City,” Eion said. “There are lots of feelings of home here.” n

Kansas City Tops the List in Affordability and Quality of Life

There’s no doubt that Kansas City is abundant in art, culture, shopping and sports, but if we’re being practical, numbers matter too. Fortunately, the Kansas City region scores just as well in cost of living as it does in quality of life. Kansas City’s local real estate market is strong and thriving, a trend that is expected to continue in the years ahead.

When stacked up next to comparable cities like Chicago, Austin and San Francisco, Kansas City’s home affordability stands above the rest. According to the National Association of REALTORS®, the median home price in the Kansas City region is $287,000 as compared to $348,000 for Chicago, $515,000 for Austin and over $1.3 million for San Francisco.

A New Era in Air Travel

Forty-nine years ago, Richard Nixon won his second term, polyester leisure suits were fashion-forward and Kansas City International Airport opened for business.

Clearly, much has changed since 1972!

Even the airport’s three-terminal layout –once seen as innovative – fell from favor in the 21st Century.

In 2017, voters approved construction of a new single-terminal KCI, slated to open on the site of the old Terminal A in early 2023.

Bearing a $1.5 billion price tag, it’s officially the largest single infrastructure project in the city’s history.

Justin Meyer, Kansas City Deputy Aviation Director, is happy to report that with construction more than halfway complete, the project is still “on budget and on time.”

That’s no small feat, given how intensely COVID-19 affected the airline industry in 2020. But, Justin says, because most construction materials had already been procured, the new

KCI will be delivered “post-pandemic at a prepandemic price.”

Collaboration being key to efficiencies in the Build KCI project, Kansas City Aviation Director, Pat Kline, adds that the stakeholders “have all been wonderful.”

Since the first steel beams began emerging from the ground early in 2020, crews have been steadily shaping the airport’s form – a striking, two-story, glass-enclosed “H” structure that resembles the renovations at Dallas Love Field and the new airport in Indianapolis. “We’re in good company with those two,” Justin says.

The 1 million-sq.-ft. facility – that’s about the length of two football fields – will house all ticketing and security operations in one area, with escalators and automated walkways to help whisk passengers to their gates. A 6,300-car parking garage adjacent to the terminal will add to the ease of catching a flight.

Pat is particularly proud of another feature – glass passenger boarding bridges instead of enclosed steel walkways connecting aircraft to the

terminal gate. With one for each of the 39 gates, “KCI will have the most glass boarding bridges at any airport in North America,” Pat says excitedly.

Thanks to the upbeat budget numbers, the team has been able to revisit amenities shelved early on. Like a Flight Simulation Lab for apprehensive travelers, a USO Lounge and an inclusive children’s play area built for all levels of ability.

Concessions have not yet been finalized, but an ambitious mix of local and national names serving a wide variety of food and drink is promised. And yes, barbecue is part of the plan!

Additional amenities will delight passengers, whether flying out or passing through. From private changing rooms exclusively created for the emergency wardrobe change to peaceful meditation rooms for a space to get centered in the midst of stressful travel, the thoughtful and inclusive designs will ensure KC’s front door is as welcoming as the people that live here.

“As more people using the airport can actually see the progress, they’re getting excited,” Pat says. “It’s great to get calls like that!” n

GETTING AROUND KC

KC Streetcar

It started with a 2.2-mile route from the River Market to Union Station and will soon expand dramatically. North to the riverfront and south past the Country Club Plaza all the way to the University of MissouriKansas City campus. All anticipated to be up and running by 2025.

RideKC

This metro-wide partnership aims to “connect people to opportunities” through a variety of mobility services. Its core components are buses, both local and MAX rapid transit lines. A system reboot called RideKC Next will place even more transit muscle along key corridors with shorter waiting times. And all RideKC buses are Zero Fare through 2023.

People-Powered Transit

Cyclists enjoy recent improvements including more bike lanes, bike racks and new cycling trails throughout the area. RideKC Bike rents classic bicycles, e-bikes and scooters that can be picked up and dropped off at 40+ convenient locations around town.

Electric Vehicles

KC is one of the best places in the country for EV drivers to power up. The Evergy Clean Charge Network touts 2,000+ charging ports around the metro, with a pilot program to piggyback off existing streetlight power that will add even more.

Smart City Technology

Real-time traffic and parking data are easily accessible to drivers navigating KC streets and highways. Kiosks downtown offer up-to-the-minute info on transit arrival times, give suggestions of things to do in the area, act as interactive photo booths and more.

LOCAL EFFORTS STRENGTHEN THE COMMUNITY AND WORKFORCE

Kansas City’s collaborative education landscape provides ample opportunity for students of all backgrounds due to the region’s mix of public, charter and private education, advocacy groups, nonprofits and higher ed.

Pathway Financial Education, located in a stateof-the-art facility in KC’s jazz district, opened in fall 2020. This nonprofit provides accessible financial, law, business management and tax education services primarily geared toward small business owners and individuals in underresourced communities.

Similarly, Apprenti, launched by the KC Tech Council in January 2021, provides a non-traditional pipeline for tech talent in under-resourced communities to some of the region’s biggest tech employers, such as Burns & McDonnell, BARR Advisory and CertTech.

One of KC’s biggest education influencers is the Real-World Learning (RWL) initiative supported by Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. RWL invests in the future of the workforce by providing students the opportunity to explore their interests, aptitudes and skills through local industry opportunities. By 2030, the initiative hopes to see every high schooler in the region graduate with a diploma and market value assets.

The Kauffman Foundation also helps fund other innovative education efforts in the region, such as People of All Colors Succeed (POAC). Founded in 2019, POAC works to create access to job and internship opportunities for marginalized high school students.

The Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) partners with Blue Valley and Northland school districts to offer high school students the opportunity to gain real-life business experience and earn college credits through the program.

Championship trophies and huge parades downtown. Twice in recent years, Kansas City has celebrated big wins for the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals!

But that’s only part of the picture.

Sporting Kansas City draws raucous crowds to its Major League Soccer games. And now the Kansas City National Women’s Soccer League (a.k.a., KC WoSo) has begun its own exhilarating brand of play.

Each year, T-Mobile Center welcomes the annual Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament, and the NAIA Basketball Championships tip off at Municipal Auditorium.

Those stadiums get loud, but nowhere near as noisy as the Kansas Speedway, which hosts two NASCAR events a year – as well as being home to the American Royal World Series of Barbeque.

Golf brings the same excitement (without the noise) at courses like The National, designed by Tom Watson. The AdventHealth Championship at the Blue Hills Country Club is a PGA TOURsanctioned event along the Korn Ferry Tour.

There’s also action on ice, courtesy of the Kansas City Mavericks from the ECHL professional ice hockey league.

Our minor league baseball team, the Kansas City Monarchs, renamed itself in 2021 to honor the city’s Negro Leagues history.

Hy-Vee Arena in the West Bottoms is the nation’s first multi-level, multi-functional sports complex, with courts lined for basketball, volleyball, futsal and pickleball.

For those who enjoy participating in recreational sports like rugby, tennis and disc golf, facilities and leagues can be found throughout the region.

And in 2023, this sports-crazy town takes center stage when the NFL Draft stops in for three days of fun and fandom. n

For the city known as an epicenter for arts and culture, a year in quarantine was challenging.

But when the high-flying aerialists, dancers and musicians known as Quixotic launched a series of live performances atop The Westin Kansas City at Crown in 2020, the message was clear. No one can contain the artistic community in KC!

This is evident at the majestic Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts — home to the Kansas City Symphony, the Kansas City Ballet and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City.

The Folly Theatre, built in 1900 and recently restored, is host to world-renowned jazz and classical music tours, stand-up comedians and more. The 8,000 seat Starlight Theatre in Swope Park hosts Broadway shows, touring musicians and unique theatrical shows year-round.

ARTS IN ABUNDANCE

Local theatre thrives on many stages, including those at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre, The White Theatre at The J, Spinning Tree and First Act Theatre Arts.

Artwork from throughout history can be seen at the park-like grounds of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art — also home to Art Course minigolf. A collection of newer works is on display at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.

NASA-made glass is the calling card of KC’s distinguished Museum at Prairiefire and the recent $25 million investment in Harry S. Truman Library and Museum reveals why “the buck stops here.”

Arts of all kinds — theater, music, visual and more — are the focus of ArtKC’s new campaign, “Who Needs Art?” The year-long effort shines a light on the crucial impact arts and culture play in the community. n

Fashionistas flock to annual runway shows, including artist Peregrine Honig’s 18th Street Fashion Show that spans a block in the Crossroads Arts District. Kansas City Fashion Week, held in spring and fall, showcases established and emerging regional and national designers.

As the second woman to hold a full-time NFL coaching position, the first female to coach in a Super Bowl and the first openly gay coach in the NFL, Katie Sowers is blazing a trail for others. A KC area native, she now finds herself back in her hometown coaching with the KC Chiefs under the Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship.

Katie has chased her passion for sports throughout her entire life. She competed at the highest level of women’s tackle football and was selected as a member of the United States Women’s National Football Team in 2013. Heartland Rhythm: KC’s Music Scene Hits High Notes

Music isn’t in the background in Kansas City. From intimate stages and concert halls to stadiums, festivals and coffee shops, KC Heartland’s soundtrack is a lively mix of homegrown talent and visiting artists that satisfy the widest range of musical tastes.

In the historic 18th & Vine District, jazz takes center stage in the Blue Room at the American Jazz Museum, often featuring local talents like vocalist Delynnia Jannell or composer and saxophonist Bobby Watson. Live jazz is also the focus at Lonnie’s Reno Club, where local musicians and luxe dining meet.

Beyond the city’s history in jazz and blues, local musicians are redefining genres, including Calvin Arsenia, a classically trained singer and harpist, The Phantastics, a party band described as “ambassadors of phunk, rap, rock and soul,” Making Movies, a group that mixes Afro-Latino rhythms with rock and roll, and, of course, the multi-talented, Grammy-nominated Janelle Monáe.

The area’s venues are as varied as the music. Take in a show or six on the multiple stages at Knuckleheads Saloon, or venture to The Rino for SongLab, a weekly open mic night for aspiring singer-songwriters. Join 19,000 friends for a concert at T-Mobile Center in the Power & Light District, or keep it small with live music at the elegant Corvino Supper Club in the Crossroads Arts District.

Even a global pandemic couldn’t stop the music. Lemonade Park, a new outdoor venue showcasing live, local music, arose in the KC’s Stockyards District in 2020. n

Kansas City’s Role Models

There’s no dispute that Kansas City is a sports town. It starts with cheering on rival teams at the high school and university level and escalates to flat-out love for the Chiefs, the Royals and Sporting KC.

But Kansas Citians still found room in their hearts for the KC National Women’s Soccer League, formed in December 2020.

The team came with a ready-made fan club: The Heartland Soccer Association is the largest soccer league and tournament host in the United States. Over 1,300 teams and 3,000 youth from age 9 to 19 compete each season.

Owners Angie and Chris Long, along with partner Brittany Matthews, did more than just create a roster of talented young women. They established a culture. “From day one it was important to foster an environment of inclusion, excitement and energy,” Chris says.

Angie adds, “That energy extends on and off the field. As an organization we want to partner with not-for-profits like Variety KC that helps special-needs children gain mobility and freedom.

And our players will be out in the community to help encourage a love of sports for females of all ages. They’re all eager to become role models to girls and young women.” Continued

But for today, four of these role models become models.

Lo’eau LaBonta (who everyone calls Lo), Kiki Pickett, Kristen Edmonds and Victoria Pickett posed in their tealand-red team uniforms before changing into head-turning fashions, showing a side of themselves crowds don’t see on the pitch. And, while there was no game-day huddle with their signature “KC Baby!” the women encouraged one another as each took her turn in front of the camera. The connection they feel is palpable.

That camaraderie was especially gratifying to Kiki, one of the last to join the team after an outstanding season at Pepperdine. “You know how you always hang back,” she said, “wanting to see how you fit into a group? Within a day I wasn’t the new player. I was a member of the team.”

Kansas City put out its welcome mat as well. Between photo takes, the players talked about how KC has made them feel special. “The outpouring of support has been so cool,” Lo said. “The fans showing up and getting loud — especially the Blue Crew (a riotous fan group that shows up with drums and banners) — gives us extra energy during home games.”

Kristen said it was amazing to see city landmarks including Union Station and downtown’s Power & Light Building illuminated in teal before the first home game. “And seeing billboards with our pictures and the team logo has been awesome,” she said. “Everyone involved, from the front office and owners to our coaches — and especially the city — make us feel respected and important.”

The team is eager to return the favor. #WePlayForKC is more than a hashtag; it’s their mission.

Victoria brushed back tears as she related a moment during the season opener at Legends Field that crystalized the community connection. “During the National Anthem, I looked up at the scoreboard with images from the crowd and saw a girl wearing a jersey with ‘V Pickett’ on the back.

“That brought it home to me,” she said. “We have an opportunity to make a positive impact on young athletes. To let them know, ‘I can do this,’ whether they’re playing sports in school or hope to become professional.”

Starting the following weekend, fans were rewarded with back-to-back wins at its hometown arena, a wellearned boost to the team’s confidence. Game on, KC. Game on. n
