ake a splash this year as Kansas City celebrates some of our newest attractions and additions! Our beloved Nikita the polar bear welcomed a new girlfriend, Berlin, to the Kansas City Zoo, where the pair can now be found swimming and dazzling visitors. SEA LIFE Kansas City Aquarium welcomed Gertrude the green sea turtle, the first endangered sea turtle to make a home in Missouri. She’s just one of many wonderful sea animals to be found at the indoor aquarium. This summer, our family is excited to attend Starlight Theatre’s outdoor productions, including the beloved Disney classic, Little Mermaid, a show full of oohs and aahs for all ages! And, several local municipalities have opened brand new aquatic facilities or renovated old ones—see pg. 49 for a complete guide to great water parks and pools. It’s exciting to celebrate the new with our children, but it is also special to share treasured traditions. Spring always brings kite flying and attending the annual Flights of Fancy Festival at MCC-Longview, enjoying great parks (see pg. 14) and viewing beautiful blooms at Powell Gardens. We make it an annual tradition to kick off the summer by attending Celebration at the Station at Union Station every Memorial Day weekend—and then the fun begins! Whether it is a day of thrills riding coasters at Worlds of Fun, cheering for a favorite sports team or attending local festivals, there is something for everyone to enjoy all summer long. Our family also enjoys making memories at Kansas City’s off-the-beaten-path destinations. Whether it is selecting the perfect outfit for a beloved doll at The Doll Cradle, enjoying a tour of a local museum, trying a new restaurant or touring one of Kansas City’s historic sites, our kids always have fun trying something new. And, that is just what KC Going Places is all about. Whether you’ve lived in Kansas City your entire life, or you’re a new visitor, you’ll find there is always something new to discover in Kansas City!

The model begins at the “sun” entry point at 13th & Baltimore in the Power & Light District and ends at the “explorers stanchion” in front of historic Union Station. Informational materials are available for educators and tourists who are interested in learning more about the program. The Kansas Cosmosphere (www.cosmo.org), a Smithsonian-affiliated museum in Hutchinson, KS (just a few hours west of KC), chronicles the Space Race through personal stories, displays of real spacecraft, hands-on exhibits, live rocket shows and more.

Race go-karts outdoors at Cool Crest (pg. 52) or Paradise Park (pg. 25), where you can also enjoy miniature golf, arcades and more. Or go indoors to put the pedal to the metal and race your loved ones at Sadlers (pg. 25). This track is home to go-karts imported from Germany that allow racers to reach speeds of 45 mph. Couple dinner with games at Dave & Buster’s (www.DaveAndBusters.com) arcade restaurant, where you’ll find everything from classic to interactive to video. CoCo Key Water Resort (pg. 51) offers a wonderful 55,000-square-foot indoor water park with a wading pool, slides, fast tube rides, activity pools and more! Monkey Bizness (pg. 24) is a fun-filled indoor amusement park for young children boasting a variety of moon bounces, slides and inflatables. With the revitalization of historic shopping districts in recent years, the Great American Main Street is coming back to life. Recently, Downtown Lee’s Summit was awarded the “Great American Main Street Award,” (www.DowntownLS.org) and it’s easy to see why! Start with a discovery of the area’s history at the Lee’s Summit Railroad Museum (pg. 37), housed in a 1905 train depot in the heart of downtown. Ladies enjoy full tea service at Henry’s Antiques & Tea Room (401 SE Douglas St., 816.524.3992). And, the day isn’t complete without shopping at local boutiques. Historic Downtown Liberty is legendary for history buffs and shoppers alike! (www.HistoricDowntownLiberty.org) The most infamous landmark is the Jesse James Bank Museum (pg. 37), site of America’s first daylight bank robbery. The square is home to many shops, the most unique being the James Country Mercantile (111 N. Main St., 816.781.9473), selling supplies for historic re-enactors and 19th century memorabilia. Independence Square is best known as the home of President Truman (www.TheIndependenceSquare.com), but before Truman, the Civil War raged, and before that, pioneers journeyed! Step back in time with a mule-drawn wagon ride and history tour courtesy of Pioneer Trails Adventures (816.456.4991). After your tour, enjoy shopping, dining, a movie or bowling. For lunch, pay tribute to the king of rock ’n’ roll as you eat an “Elvis,” the signature grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich at Clinton’s Soda Fountain (100 W. Maple, 816.833.2046), the location of the original Crown Drug Store, Truman’s first boyhood employer. Or, dine below street level at The Courthouse Exchange (113 W. Lexington, 816.252.0344), where rock walls create a cozy atmosphere as you enjoy pub-style dining.

Imagine a leisurely day of shopping and dining at locally-owned businesses where you are greeted with a smile. One of the most eclectic districts in the area, Historic Downtown Overland Park, (http://DowntownOP.org) has a strong celebration of the arts, including the art deco Rio Theater (7204 W. 80th St., 913.383.8500), one of Kansas’ original movie theaters, which shows independent films. The district features many favorite eateries, including Great Day Café (7921 Santa Fe Dr., 913.642.9090), where restaurant owners play live music or demonstrate a potter’s wheel. You’ll soon discover that many of the shops offer classes from sewing and scrapbooking to culinary arts, including the Culinary Center of Kansas City (7920 Santa Fe Dr., 913.341.4455), which offers classes ranging from gourmet cooking to beginning skills. Famous for its prisons and the military fort bearing its name, Leavenworth, “The First City in Kansas,” is also a fun and nostalgic day trip courtesy of Leavenworth Main Street (www.LeavenworthMainStreet.com). Begin with a visit to the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum (pg. 36), one of the most whimsical sites in Kansas. Learn the history of Parker’s carousel business, from crafting hand-carved horses to the introduction of aluminum animals, and conclude with a spin on a 1913 carousel! Take a historic tour on the Leavenworth Trolley (913.682.1023, Sat. 11:00) and let the kids ring the bell at the end of the ride. Eat at the Corner Pharmacy (429 Delaware, 913.682.1602), an old-fashioned lunch counter and ice cream shoppe, or the Pullman Place Family Restaurant (230 Cherokee, 913.682.0200), decorated with railroad memorabilia, including a special glass-top table with a model train running inside! BONUS: Two more fun-filled destinations less than a tank of gas from KC!

Weekend Getaway: Omaha, Nebraska

Omaha, just a few hours north of Kansas City, is a great vacation destination for families. Start at the Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium (www.OmahaZoo.com),

where you can ride the Skyfari for a view overlooking animals in world-class exhibits. Walk on the wild side in the Lied Jungle and marvel at the Scott Aquarium with a 70-foot-long underwater walkthrough tunnel with sharks, stingrays and oceanic life.

One of the most impressive sights is an exact replica of Titanic’s hand-crafted grand staircase. Children will be able to step into the captain’s bridge and take the wheel. And guests young and old are moved by the stories of the survivors of the Titanic.

Ride the Ducks

Details: Tours are offered on multiple routes; select the one that works for you. branson.ridetheducks.com/home.aspx The Ducks were a favorite for our girls hands-down. The Ducks are a land and water adventure where you tour Branson aboard a special vehicle (originally used by the military), specifically designed to travel by land and water. The kids enjoyed the humorous tour provided by the captain, quacking their duck calls (these are also used for discounts around Branson) and, of course, splashing down into the lake for a fun cruise. Every child is given the opportunity to “co-pilot” the boat, and they are granted a captain’s certificate at the end of the tour.

And More

Branson offers many more family-friendly destinations your family will enjoy! Silver Dollar City (www.SilverDollarCity. com), the famous theme park set in the 1880s, welcomed a brand new wooden roller coaster, Outlaw Run, this year! The entire family will delight in watching crafters use historic tools to create works of art and delicious foods right before your eyes. The Butterfly Palace & Rainforest Adventure (www.TheButterflyPalace.com) features a walk through butterfly habitat with hundreds of beautiful butterflies to enjoy, a mirror maze, and rain forest exhibit. For more ideas, visit www.BransonTourismCenter.com

CoCo Key (www.CocoKeyOmaha.com) is a fun place to stay. An indoor water resort, with an Olympic-sized pool, beach entry pool, waterslides, Parrot’s Perch, a giant water playground, lazy river and more, is all housed in a luxurious hotel. Next, explore the interactive exhibits at the Omaha Children’s Museum (www.OCM.org), including the Imagination Playground, Sandy’s Splish Splash Garden, Fantastic Future Me and OCM Zooland. The hands-down favorite, though, is the giant ball machine where kids send balls through an exciting maze of contraptions. For more Omaha travel ideas, check out www.VisitOmaha.com.

More than a Capital City: Topeka, Kansas

Topeka is great day trip or overnight trip from Kansas City. Begin with the Topeka Capitol (www.kshs.org/capitol). Tour guides share the history of Kansas through historic exhibits, artwork, the architecture of the Capitol, stories and anecdotes. Then, head to the Topeka Zoo located in Gage Park (http://topekazoo.org/). The Topeka Zoo is just the right size for young children. Favorite exhibits include Black Bear Woods where bears play and climb, the Rain Forest exhibit where pink flamingos roam, and the Ape exhibit with gorillas, orangutans and more monkeys. After the zoo, you’ll find more to explore at Gage Park with a beautiful rose garden, carousel in the park, a mini train children can ride, and Animal Land. Next, visit Old Prairie Town (1st & Clay St., 785.368.3888) with seven historic buildings that each tell a story. Learn about Charles Sheldon, author of In His Steps, and other early Kansans as you tour pioneer homes, an 1870s mansion, livery stable, barber shop and depot. The highlight is a visit to the Powtin Drug Store, a wonderfully restored 1880s pharmacy and soda fountain. For more Topeka travel ideas, see www.VisitTopeka.com. KCGOINGPLACES.COM

GIVING BACK OVER YOUR VACATION

voluntourism Harvesters

V

oluntourism is a new word for an old idea. It is the idea that you can combine the fun and sightseeing of a vacation with the joy of giving your time to a cause. College students have been embarking on “Alternative Spring Break” for at least the past three decades, using their week off in the spring term to coordinate trips to build houses and the like. And the origin of summer break stems from needing time to work together as a community in the peak agricultural seasons. Now there are organizations and tour companies catering “voluntourism” packages to nearly any interest and age group, typically featuring far away destinations. These packages, however, can cost thousands of dollars per person, which is a deal breaker for many families with small children. Still, using your vacation time or school break to give back can have great rewards and build wonderful memories for your family. By spending vacation time volunteering, you have the chance to explore new social, environmental or cultural issues, all while exploring a new area and recharging your spirit. So if you’re not quite ready to break the bank by packing the kids and heading off to South America for sun and siesta, there are still options to stay close to home. Here are a few suggestions of ways your next vacation can

give back. If none of these ideas fit your needs, Volunteer Match (www.VolunteerMatch.com) offers directory listings of volunteer opportunities of all types for all ages.

VOLUNTOURISM MEETS STAYCATION My family and I embarked on our first ever “staycation” last year, and I was amazed at how truly invigorating it was to take time and be a tourist in my hometown of Kansas City, MO. It’s humbling to realize that I could spend my whole life exploring my home and still have new discoveries! So why not take your “staycation” and turn it into a “volunstaycation”? Kansas City, MO, Parks and Recreation: www.KCMO.org Kansas City Parks and Recreation manages more than 12,000 acres of parkland. Take the opportunity to explore a new space and take your family on your own park cleanup day! Make sure to bring gloves, bags for separating trash from recyclables, a small first aid kit—and wear closed-toe shoes! There are also a number of structured volunteer opportunities for older children and teenagers, such as volunteering at a local recycling center on weekends. Museum Explorer: One of the great features of Kansas City is the abundance of affordable and high quality museums we have to offer—far too many to list here. See pg. 35 to begin the search for a mu-

With these suggestions, you can use your weekend to be a “weekend angel,” spending your days outdoors while helping to improve our city! Cultivate Kansas City: www.CultivateKC.org This organization is an urban farming initiative working to promote sustainable community-based agriculture throughout the Metro. Children of any age are welcome with parental supervision; unsupervised youth must be 15 or older. Bridging the Gap: www.BridgingTheGap.org/Volunteer/ Ages vary by volunteering activity. Families with children of any age (with proper supervision) are welcome at most events! They include the annual Project Blue River Rescue cleanup in Kansas City on April 6, 2013. Harvesters: www.Harvesters.org Harvesters is the only food bank serving our region and covers 26 counties in Missouri and Kansas. For children 6 and up, Harvesters offers volunteer opportunities in Topeka and Kansas City sorting and packing food, making this a great day trip option! YouthWorks: www.youthworks.com This group focuses on ministry to others throughout the United States and this summer offers two chances for kids to get involved in helping the KC community. Both a KCMO and KCKS service opportunity are offered this year, a great opportunity to give back locally. parent picks:

places parents love more than the kids do

B

eing a good parent often means much self-sacrifice. But thanks to KC Parent readers, we have the 4-1-1 on which family outings are just as fun (if not more!) for Mom & Dad, as well as the kiddos.

Outside the Box. The telly. The boob tube. Whatever you call the television, it has a more powerful hold on families than most would care to admit. The average preschooler watches close to 32 hours of television per week, according to a recent University of Michigan study (and the numbers don’t improve much for 6- to 11-year-olds, who average 28 hours of screen time). While technology plays a valuable role in our culture, it certainly is no substitute for unplugged time when a child can harness his imagination, free thinking and creativity. Perhaps this is one of the reasons our most popular family outing suggestions at www.KCParent.com are for outdoor venues. Natasha Jenkins from Ottawa encourages parents to check out Prairie Park Nature Center in Lawrence for year-round family fun. “Our 2-year-old loves seeing ‘the critters’ and we love that it is a great indoor stop during the winter and indoor-outdoor during the warmer months,” Natasha tells us. “Plus, it’s free!” Olathe mom Gena Rossow says her favorite outings include the Ernie Miller Nature Center in Olathe, Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead in Overland Park and Powell Gardens in Kingsville, MO. Deanna Rose can be hopping during the school year due to field trips and group outings, but if the timing is right (particularly during the early to mid-afternoon lull),

it’s a wonderful location for a picnic lunch and play date. Powell Gardens, an oasis nestled in the Missouri countryside, is just a quick 30-mile drive east of Kansas City. Its scenic landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for you to capture beautiful photos, and the Byron Shutz Nature Trail affords the prime opportunity to get some exercise as a family—all while discovering flora and fauna native to our region. Powell’s Tasting Station gives visitors an opportunity to sample menu items grown onsite (available on weekends from April 27 on). And if Mom & Dad need a date night, check out Powell’s website for upcoming wine tastings and Barn Dinner Series!

A Need for Speed. One of the perks of parenthood is channeling your inner child right alongside your kids! Kansas City dad Dale Wilson recommends checking out Paradise Park’s go-karts, where you can put the pedal to the metal in a race against the kids! Looking for a day full of thrill-seeking excitement? “Worlds of Fun!” Kansas City mom Susan Berstein Luetje suggests. “So many great coasters and rides!”

A Night on the Town. Kim Voigt of Weston recommends Crown Center. With free rotating children’s exhibits, Kaleidoscope, Sea Life, LEGOLand, restaurants and shopping all within walking distance (plus, just a jaunt around the corner to find Union Station and the National World War I Museum), it’s a no brainer! Powell Gardens and the Overland Park Arboretum rank high up there on Lauren Greenlee’s list of favorite family outings. She writes from her home in Olathe.

School’s out? What to do? Check our calendar on www.KCParent.com for fun-filled outings daily!

ot the travel bug, but can’t go far? Try visiting a new part of town, where lesser known spots offer one-ofa-kind experiences.

UNIQUE & URBAN Start your adventures where it all began: Kansas City’s historic river front. Arrive early and stroll the produce and crafts stalls in the River Market (5th & Walnut). Then, visit the nearby food, antique and ethnic shops. Kansas City’s historic Garment District, where local workers produced clothing sold around the world, is a few blocks north. The Garment District Museum (see pg. 37) is in the heart of Kansas City’s once robust clothing manufacturing district. The museum features changing exhibits of the fashionable clothes produced here during the 1920s through the 1960s. A commemorative park located across the street features a fountain and a 22-foot “Needle” sculpture. Before returning your free parking ticket, stop by the five-story Central Library of Kansas City (www.KCLibrary.org) in the former First National Bank of Kansas City building. Marble fixtures, chandeliers, the old vault (now a movie theater), historic artifacts and a spectacular rooftop with reading area and an over-sized chess set make an unforgettable impression. Nearby: Another “don’t-miss” stop is The Money Museum (see pg. 36), located in the Federal Reserve Bank near 20th

26 kc going places | spring & summer 2013

& Grand. Entry is free, and everyone takes home a bag of cash. Interactive exhibits explain how the nation’s economy works. View one of the largest cash vaults in the United States, design your own money and try lifting a solid gold bar. Hungry? Options abound at the River Market and the Power and Light District (between 12th & 14th streets, and Baltimore & Grand), or park at Crown Center and validate your parking ticket at one of its restaurants/food court businesses.

THE NORTHLAND Gladstone and Parkville offer significant historic and recreational resources worthy of repeat visits. Enjoy a rural retreat in a growing suburban community. The Atkins-Johnson Farm and Museum (see pg. 35), one of Clay County’s oldest continuously occupied properties, makes its public debut April 27. The 22-acre farm includes the restored farmhouse, outbuildings, two barns and a cemetery. Visitors view part of the farm’s 1826 log cabin and experience life on a typical early 20th century Missouri farm. Nearby: Happy Rock Park, at NE 76th & Antioch, is a 79-acre park with a 1.3-mile fitness trail, picnic areas, tennis courts, ball fields, batting cages and three playgrounds. Oak Grove Park, at NE 76th Street & Troost, is a 17-acre park with a ½-mile walking trail and the permanent home of Gladstone’s renowned Theatre in the Park. This year’s program offers Guys and Dolls (July 5-7) and The Music Man (August 2-4).

Shawnee Town 1929

Truman Home and Neighborhood: If you’ve just gotta see Harry, visit him at home. Start your tour at the visitor’s center at 223 N. Main St. Before or after your tour, explore the print or cell phone tours that showcase several buildings important to Truman throughout his life. The Truman Farm (see pg. 38) in Grandview is a 25-minute drive. Hungry? Stroll—Harry style—over to Independence Square, where local restaurants and shops offer a variety of casual to upscale fare. The Courthouse Exchange Restaurant, located below street level, is a favorite (113 W. Lexington Ave., 816.252.0344).

FAIRWAY TO SHAWNEE, KANSAS

Hungry? Parkville offers everything from pizza and sandwiches to specialty coffees and fine French cuisine. Restaurants are located along Main Street and west of the park in the English Landing Shopping Center.

INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI Independence offers some unusual sites that take you off the beaten trail. Through July 31, the Puppetry Arts Institute (see pg. 35) features the most famous puppet in history: Pinocchio. Tour the museum’s collection of locally-made Hazelle Inc. marionette and hand puppets and international puppets, then take in a performance and make a puppet. Nearby: A truly unique experience awaits you at Leila’s Hair Museum (see pg. 37), with displays of more than 400 hair wreaths made before 1900, as well as jewelry and watch chains fashioned from hair. Built in 1881, the Vaile Mansion (see pg. 39) stands as one of our nation’s premiere examples of Second Empire victorian architecture. Visitors enjoy touring the mansion to discover the secrets inside.

Discover Johnson County’s Native American history and its rural heritage. The Shawnee Indian Mission Museum (see pg. 38) in Fairway preserves one of the largest Methodist missions established in the region to educate and minister to the Shawnee, Delaware and other nations from 1839 to 1862. The stories of the missionaries and the students who lived here and attended the Manual Training School are presented at the 12-acre National Historic Landmark. Shawnee Town 1929 (see pg. 38) is a recreated village reflecting life in Shawnee between 1840 and 1920. Recent additions focus on the market farming heritage of the 1920s. Several events are planned for spring/summer 2013, including a Farmstead Open House (May 4), Old Shawnee Days (June 8) and Garden Party (June 22). Nearby: The Johnson County Museum (p. 37) and the 1950s All-Electric House (pg. 35) are entertaining and educational places to learn hands-on history or spend a day playing. Hungry? Many family-friendly chain restaurants are located along Shawnee Mission Parkway. A modern version of Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant, where miniature trains deliver your food, is located at 13803 W. 63rd St. Kathy Stump lives in Parkville, from where she and her family enjoy exploring the surrounding area.

t’s a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors. Enjoy a view of some of the more elusive forest denizens, such as neotropcial bird immigrants, and ephemeral woodland flowers and waterways that are often clear of algae. What better time to take a picnic or do a little photography? Nature changes quickly in the spring, and each week will offer something different to enjoy. Loose Park in Kansas City, MO, is great for a picnic and family time. In addition to picnic shelters, the gently rolling hills and shade trees offer excellent blanket picnicking. Other features include Loose Lake, gardens and a Japanese tea room and garden. Recreational areas such as tennis courts, playground and walking trails are available. There is plenty of room to throw a Frisbee or baseball. See the KC Parks and Recreation website for details (www.KCMO.org). Lakeside Nature Center in Swope Park has a small picnic area and trails wandering through a variety of habitats, including prairie, savannah, upland forests, a glade, limestone bluffs and a hollow. Larger picnic areas can be found nearby in Swope Park. The nature center is a must-visit as it contains many birds of prey, reptiles, fish and other animals. Lakeside is one of the few wildlife rehabilitation organizations in the city. Visit their website (www.LakesideNatureCenter.org) to get a trail map. Wyandotte County Lake Park in Kansas City, KS, has 16 shelters

and a beach shelter for picnicking. The 400-acre scenic lake sports waterfowl and other birds, particularly during migration times. There are boating and fishing opportunities; be sure to check for the area regulations. The park has hiking and horse riding trails. Simply driving around the lake offers spectacular water views. Visit the F. L. Schlagle Library in the park for a trail map and information. The Wyandotte County website (www.WyCoKCK.org) can help plan your outing. For folks in the northland, a visit to Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary in Liberty, MO, is well worth the time. The area has a picnic shelter, a clear, stone-bottom creek and many trails to enjoy. I recommend hiking the interconnected Pond, Pawpaw and Columbine trails, as they host a variety of woodland flowers and migratory songbirds in early spring. A handicapped accessible trail winds throughout a variety of habitats. Check in at the nature center or visit the website (http://NatureSanctuary.com/) for a map. A smaller northland natural area that is worth a visit is the Maple Woods Natural Area on 76th Street in Gladstone, MO. What it lacks in amenities it makes up for in spring flowers that grow thickly along the hilly trail. See the Missouri Department of Conservation website for this area (http://MDC.mo.gov). Heather Shields grew up in Kansas City with a love for nature and conservation. She now teaches science at Ruskin High, where she shares her passion with students.

Lakeside Nature Center “I am proud to represent an amazing group of generous volunteers and dedicated staff teaching our young families about animals and their habitats with whom they live and share space. It’s important they understand and appreciate their ‘wild’ neighbors so we can coexist as that space is reduced due to habitat destruction. Who hasn’t found an injured wild creature needing help—then wondered where to take it for help? Lakeside Nature Center is the answer: 4701 E. Gregory in Swope Park, right in the heart of the city. Educational programs are offered throughout the year, and the facility is free to the public to come and relax, enjoy nature with their children and see living owls, hawks, eagles, snakes and turtles up close and learn about their habits and habitat.” ~ Sharon Goff GP: Your family’s favorite destination in KC: Sharon: Swope Park is such a special place. MUSEUMS Toy & Miniature Museum

IN LOVE WITH MUSEUMS

K

ansas City is bursting with museums and activities designed for children. But once families have frequented Science City, Nelson-Atkins and Kaleidoscope, some find themselves wondering… what’s left? Fortunately, our city is a cultural marvel with attractions to appeal to every interest and intellect. Toy & Miniature Museum of Kansas City What kid doesn’t love a building full of toys? Laura Taylor, museum educator, bubbles with enthusiasm about opportunities for families. “The miniature gallery is brimming with miniature replicas of some of the most celebrated works of art in the world. You can visit Louis XV’s glittering study in the Palace of Versailles, experience the quiet solace of Federico da Montefeltro’s Liberal Arts Studio in Italy and peruse the nooks and crannies of a colonial mansion.” A unique place for informal learning and fun, the museum also hosts hands-on sessions for “toy makers” of all ages. Children will be enraptured by the Rube-Goldberg-like machine in the marble room and the full range of dolls in the Barbie exhibit, while adults laugh and point out the antique toys and board games they played with when they were children. Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art Johnson County Community College’s campus boasts a family-centered art museum buzzing with activity. Guided tours for children and family groups include a variety of hands-on elements to enhance children’s learning experi-

ences with the diverse collection of artworks. Karen Gerety Folk, curator of education, points out the Early Explorations and Contemporary Creations classes. There, on Saturdays from October through April, students explore and discuss identified pieces of art, then return to the classroom to create “unique finished projects inspired by the art in the museum.” The Nerman is the perfect fit for introducing children to art with active, hands-on inspiration. National Frontier Trails Museum Did you know the first railroad west of the Mississippi River linked Independence, MO, with its steamboat landing? For the more adventurous, parents and children visiting Independence’s National Frontier Trails Museum can test their knowledge of Lewis and Clark, plan a trip west in interactive exhibits and peruse letters and diaries from children whose families traveled by covered wagon during westward expansion. Families can even take a real mule-pulled covered wagon ride. Especially when paired with the city’s Santa-Cali-Gon Days (over Labor Day weekend), a trip to the National Frontier Trails Museum is anything but stuffy and boring. Any museum can be a place of wonder with the guidance of an adult who has bought into it. Excitement is catching— especially for children, who already possess a heightened curiosity in our world. The crucial component in getting your child to love a museum is to love it yourself! Kimberly Brownlee, the mother of three very different boys, spends the summer frequenting museums across the country and right here at home in Kansas City.

Cedar Point Amusement Park

was hopeful that there would be more than just thrill rides, and I must say, Cedar Point delivers! One problem our family generally encounters at amusement parks is that two of us enjoy thrills, while two others prefer more mild options. I loved the variety of rides Cedar Point has to offer! There were so many of what I would term “mid” level rides—not too scary and not too wimpy—to please the entire family. We rode more rides together than at any other park we’ve visited. Some of our favorite things: • Iron Dragon Roller Coaster: My older daughter’s first roller coaster that we rode over and over! • Corkscrew: My thrill seeker younger’s favorite (I’ll take her word for it as I stayed far away). • Scrambler: My all-time favorite ride that I loved introducing my girls to! • Fast Lane Pass: For an extra charge, you’ll receive a wristband that gets you to the front of some of the park’s most popular rides. It allowed us to spend more time riding and less time waiting. • Soak City: Cedar Point’s water park. We visited in hot July, and cooling off at the water park felt really good! We spent one day at Cedar Point and didn’t see the entire park. I would recommend at least a two-day visit. www.CedarPoint.com

ave you made plans for a family vacation this year? If the answer to that question is no, then read on, because I have the perfect family vacation destination for you: Cleveland. Yes, you read that right. I said Cleveland, as in Ohio. Not the first place that comes to mind when you think of a family vacation? I used to be the same way until the Sarver family spent a fun-filled week in the Buckeye State, and we can’t wait to go back! Here’s an itinerary to help make the most of a week in Cleveland. Note: We drove so we could have the convenience of our car, which we found necessary for getting around. We stayed overnight in St. Louis both ways to break up the trip a bit. For fun car game ideas, visit www.KCParent.com. The first few days were spent an hour outside of Cleveland, in Sandusky, home to the famous Cedar Point, an amusement park with the most roller coasters in the United States.

Sandusky: What to Do: Cedar Point Amusement Park Cedar Point is home to more roller coasters than any other amusement park. As I am not a roller coaster aficionado, I 44 kc going places | spring & summer 2013

Lake Erie is home to several islands, and after a day at the amusement park, we spent a day relaxing on Kelleys Island. To this day it remains my older daughter’s favorite day of the trip. Travel to the island by ferry, rent a golf cart and enjoy a day of beautiful scenery and family fun. We dined at Docker’s Restaurant, where we sat on a patio overlooking the water, and then spent time at the Glacial Grooves State Memorial (the largest example of glacial grooves in the United States). After the park, we were off to the beach where we spent several hours in the sand and water. While we enjoyed all activities, we really enjoyed exploring the island by golf cart, taking in the quaint homes and scenery. www.KelleysIsland.com

Cleveland: What to Do: After our days in Sandusky, we made the 45-minute drive to Cleveland. Check out our must-sees.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad What’s more fun than a train ride? As I tend to over schedule our trips, a morning spent relaxing on the train and seeing the sights of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park was a nice midweek break. The volunteers aboard the train shared so many interesting facts with us. After the ride, be sure to grab a meal at Yours Truly and then pop into Malley’s Chocolate Store—yum-o!! www.CVSR.com/

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

My husband and I are music lovers, so this was on the top of our list, and it was well worth the visit. We spent the better part of a day taking in the vast exhibits and memorabilia. With such a wide variety of artists represented, our girls found just as much to see and enjoy as we grownups did. www.RockHall.com/

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo We have a terrific zoo in Kansas City and love to visit, so it was natural to take in Cleveland’s zoo. While there are similarities between all zoos, we really enjoyed our time at the Metroparks Zoo. We found so much to see and explored several unique exhibits. The whole family enjoyed the nocturnal animals’ exhibit and was lucky enough to catch the koala bears when they were awake. We learned a lot from the docent outside of the koala house—she was truly an expert on the subject. We allowed three hours at the zoo but could have easily stayed a few more. www.CleMetZoo.com/

Corner Alley We spent the last night of our vacation at Corner Alley. It’s a family-friendly bowling alley with good food. It was nice to relax and enjoy our meal while bowling. The food is brought to tables where you play, so you can bowl and eat at the same time. http://www.TheCornerAlley.com/

Melt Bar & Grilled While we enjoyed many good meals, you MUST visit Melt on a trip to Cleveland. The premise is simple: serve lots of different types of grilled cheese sandwiches. But the food is anything but simple! I ordered “The Godfather,” lasagna inside of a grilled cheese sandwich. My mouth waters as I write about it—quite possibly the best sandwich I’ve had, ever. MeltBarAndGrilled.com/ Margaret Sarver lives with her family in Lenexa. While she loves Lenexa, she enjoys exploring other parts of our great country with her husband and two girls.

John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil (Nov. 13, 1911–Oct. 6, 2006), beloved Kansas City legend, was first baseman and manager in the Negro American League with the Kansas City Monarchs. After retirement as a player, Buck became the first African American coach in Major League Baseball. On Dec. 7, 2006, O’Neil was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush. His family donated his medal to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (pg. 39) on Nov. 13, 2012, on what would have been his 101st birthday.
