kansas city’s #1 travel guide since 2010

elcome to my hometown! Fall and winter are my favorite times of year in the city. We love exploring local pumpkin patches and cider mills in the fall and celebrating beloved holiday traditions in the winter. Seasonal traditions stand out this time of year with many fabulous festivals and events. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! is an October staple for hundreds of Americans, and Worlds of Fun celebrates with the Peanuts Gang during their Great Pumpkin Fest. Louisburg Cider Mill is famous in our region for everything fall, and rightfully so. With delicious cider, apple cider donuts, a beautiful pumpkin patch and corn maze, and it’s centerpiece barn hosting many fall events, this is a must-see autumn attraction. We also love taking kids to spend a day playing at Carolyn’s Country Cousins Pumpkin Patch in the Northland. It offers giant pumpkin pillows, a large petting zoo, train rides and pig races. Johnson Farms Pumpkin Patch, in the south part of town, has delightful play areas, pumpkins, apple picking, a pumpkin chomping dino and tractor-pulled hayrides. You’ll find our guide to the city’s best patches and fall attractions on KCParent.com. Many of our favorite attractions are open year-round and just keep getting better. We love visiting Science City at Union Station, where new hands-on exhibits are educational and fun. The Kansas City Zoo is home to many animals, including the new sloth, and our beloved favorites like the polar bear, penguins, orangutans and sea lions. The zoo is open yearround and offers a variety of programs from daily zookeeper chats and animal feedings to special events, including overnights for families and junior zookeeper programs for children. When I need to recharge my creative juices, I love to head to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, our always-free art gallery where new exhibits and special events keep the beauty fresh for each visit. These are just a few of our favorite ways to explore our city this season. You’ll find many more as you flip through the pages of KC Going Places. Welcome to Kansas City! We’re happy you’re here and we hope you love it just as much as we do!

It’s showtime! Mom and Dad treat us to a showing of A Charlie Brown Christmas at the Coterie. Sam and I love the movie and can’t wait to see the same show performed live. The theater is small with seats on the floor for kids that wish to get extra close. If you want to sit with your parents, you can do that, too! We choose to sit front and center. My brother and I giggle when we hear the music … how can you not when you hear Vince Guaraldi’s famous Peanuts theme?

Before we leave Crown Center, there’s one more stop in store: seeing the man in the red suit himself inside his winter wonderland. I can’t wait to tell Santa about all the wonderful memories we’ve already made in just half a day.

Mom says our next destination is just down the road and she isn’t kidding. Just a couple of blocks away, we find ourselves at Union Station, a train station that has a movie theater, planetarium, kids museum and restaurants inside! All the festive holiday decor and twinkly Christmas lights nestled within Union Station’s main hallways glow magically. Dad treats us to a ride on a miniature Christmas train. Afterward, we view one of the biggest Christmas displays made out of miniature trains that I’ve ever seen!

5:52 p.m.

We pile into the van and Mom turns on the Christmas radio station. Dad takes us to the Plaza, where we have dinner and cap off the night with a horse-drawn carriage ride.

3:37 p.m. We wander back to Crown Center for one last treat: ice skating on the terrace. We watch as a Zamboni smooths the ice so that it’s shiny like a marble, and then we are off in a whirl on our skates. When we circle the rink, I spot the biggest Christmas tree I’ve ever seen in my life. Mom says this is the tree she was telling me about earlier in the day. It’s called the mayor’s tree and she’s right: It does make any standard Christmas tree look like Charlie Brown’s in comparison!

8:39 p.m.

It’s been a day full of fun, but Mom and Dad say we haven’t even scratched the surface of special activities here in Kansas City. I can’t wait to see what we’ll do tomorrow. But, for now, I’m happy to drift off to sleep, full of memories and hopes that sugar plums will dance in my head!

U n iquely kc souvenirs If your kids are anything like my kids, souvenirs are a big deal to them. It’s often not just the kids who like souvenirs. Adults do, too!. The trick is to find something unique to the location you are visiting, not just some “Made in China” trinket. So whether you are visiting Kansas City and searching for a souvenir to bring home or have visitors and are trying to help them find the perfect tchotchke to take away, here are some “Made in KC” goodies that fit the bill!

Boulevard Brewery If a trip to Kansas City’s own Boulevard Brewery is on your agenda while visiting Kansas City, be sure to check out their great souvenirs. While at the brewery, visit the stores where you’ll find everything from shirts to coasters to candles. At the Bottle Shop, mix and match to build your own custom six-pack, choosing from a wide variety of year-round, seasonal and limited release beers. If you don’t have time to visit the store, items can be ordered online at Store.boulevard.com.

Made in Kansas City To find a nice selection of all different types of souvenirs, visit one of the six Made in Kansas City stores throughout the metro. The shops offer items from more than 300 local artists, providing a way for small businesses to showcase their items to customers all over KC. Several of the locations also have a café, which offers tasty treats. At the Plaza location, I was introduced to ice cream mixed with cereal. Initially I was skeptical but am now a believer! Every member of the family will find a local souvenir to take home from Made in KC! MadeInKC.co

Cherry Mash Here’s the great thing about candy as a souvenir: You enjoy it, and it doesn’t collect dust in your home. Win-win! The Cherry Mash was invented in St. Joseph, MO, in 1918 in a candy factory started by Dr. George Washington Chase and his son, Ernest. Originally called the Cherry Chase and then the Cherry Chaser, the Cherry Mash is the third oldest candy bar in the nation. After a brief stint of being manufactured in Chicago, the Cherry Mash returned to St. Joseph, where it is still made to this day. A yummy way to remember a visit to Kansas City! CherryMash.com

The products, manufactured at a factory in the Crossroads District, are all vegetarian, vegan and most are gluten-free—and many contain a high percentage of essential oils. From bath bars and salts, lip balms and body mist, to home and cleaning supplies like laundry soap and counter cleaner, these souvenirs will last long after your trip to Kansas City. And you can replenish your stock after returning home! Select products are available in Target stores throughout the nation and always available online at IndigoWild.com.

Barbecue Sauce Kansas City and barbecue go hand-in-hand. What better way to remember a trip to KC than to bring home some yummy sauce? As a challenge while in Kansas City, visit as many barbecue restaurants as possible and try to determine each family member’s favorite. Almost every Kansas Citian has a sauce that is tops. For my husband, it’s Arthur Bryant’s, while I prefer Zarda. Sauce also makes a great thank you gift to someone outside of Kansas City. On many occasions I’ve sent along a few bottles as a way to say thanks. One of the great things about barbecue sauce as a souvenir? It won’t break the bank!

Charlie Hustle KC T-Shirt T-shirts are usually my go-to souvenirs. They are functional, and the memories associated with the trip can be relived over and over. I have a shirt from my honeymoon and, although I don’t wear it anymore, when I see it in my drawer it always takes me back. The Charlie Hustle Heart KC is widely recognized and created to have a vintage feel and look. This stylish t-shirt is the perfect souvenir to take back home after your visit to Kansas City. Sunny Seeds Kansas’ state flower is the sunflower. And what comes from sunflowers? Sunflower seeds! The Sunflower Food Company, based in Lenexa, takes these seeds and kicks them up several notches by covering them in chocolate and a candy coating. The result is a yummy treat that makes the perfect souvenir to take home as a reminder of time spent in Kansas City and the Sunflower State. In addition to Sunny Seeds, the company makes many other tasty snacks. SunflowerFoodCompany.com

Margaret Sarver lives in Lenexa (home of Sunny Seeds!) with her husband and two daughters. Her favorite part of a vacation is not having to cook meals.

AS SEEN ON TV

Delicious Dining at KC’s Famous Eateries At last count, more than 40 Kansas City-area restaurants have been featured on various shows on the Food Network and the Travel Channel. Kansas City is famous for barbecue, so naturally many of those restaurants made the list. The Big Four—Jack Stack, Gates, Joe’s KC and Arthur Bryant’s—get plenty of press and publicity. But what about some of the smaller, lesser known joints?

B.B.’s Lawnside BBQ has been featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (hereafter Triple D) and Drinking Made Easy and the Travel Channel’s No Reservations. It boasts daily live blues and an over 60-year-old pit in which they smoke all their meat. B.B.’s is definitely no-frills barbecue. Everything is served on paper, Styrofoam or plastic. Their traditional sauce is spicy and good, as are the pit beans, smoked turkey and burnt ends. You might also want to try Guy Fieri’s favorite, the barbecue sundae ... a three-layer pulled pork, pit beans and coleslaw concoction served in a mason jar. At B.B.’s, the waitstaff is very casual, and the restaurant has family-style seating inside and outside on the front deck. The super laid-back atmosphere and hole-in-thewall vibe are refreshing. So, prepare to relax and enjoy the food at the place “where barbecue meets the blues.” 22 KC GOING PLACES | FALL & WINTER 2019-20

Woodyard Bar-B-Que, also featured on Triple D and No Reservations as well as the Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods, is unlike any place I’ve ever been. It’s an old house converted into a restaurant—of sorts—with an outdoor smoker, rustic decor (deer head included), a random assortment of indoor and outdoor seating (think plush velvet couches and picnic tables) and a backyard pavilion. Also in the back is a working lumberyard from which they sell oak, pecan, hickory and other woods to area pit masters. Upon arriving at Woodyard, you step into what was probably a living room at one time to place your order and pay. Then the staff delivers your food to your table. Be sure to try the Carolina sandwich (pulled pork topped with coleslaw) and the burnt end chili. Also, the barbecue beans are some of the best I’ve ever had.

Of course, it’s not just barbecue that Kansas City does well. A number of other restaurants have earned attention on TV shows. Another of Fieri’s favorites, as featured on Triple D, is Cupini’s, a little taste of Italy hiding in Westport. When you enter, you order and pay for your meal in what looks like a deli. Then you find a seat in the next room over, where they serve you your food. The place is old and small, has creaky floors, and seems to just be thrown together. But that’s what makes this place so charming. Both the pasta and pizza are very good choices, and you can tell they make everything fresh in-house. Cupini’s also has a great assortment of desserts, including cheesecake and cannoli. Don’t miss the cute courtyard-like alleyway with bistro tables.

Succotash (featured on Triple D) can only be described as a neighborhood dive. It’s a place where the staff sports piercings, tattoos and colorful hair, and political leanings are front and center. The atmosphere is loud, crowded and slightly chaotic, but the food is good, with hefty portions and reasonable prices. Be sure to try the “cake & a smile,” the eight-layer citrus cake or—if you are really hungry—the Stuart. They also serve excellent coffee from local roasters Oddly Correct.

Blue Koi, another Triple D feature, is a Chinese food establishment on 39th Street run by the same family that owns Genghis Khan Mongolian Grill. This place blew me away. They have a full bar and lots of tantalizing dishes. Their specialty is noodles and dumplings, and—oh my—they are both delicious! Comfort food at its best! They are also vegetarian- and vegan-friendly and don’t use any MSG in their food. The service here is amazing, with all the staff being extremely friendly, gracious and accommodating. The atmosphere is comfortable and pleasant, and I loved the open kitchen. Plus, how can you not like a place that has “awesome sauce” on the menu? Check them out in Leawood as well, if you are in the area.

local haunts

I

f you’re looking for Halloween-themed fall fun, you’ll find a variety of attractions for kids and adults in KC. The West Bottoms is home to several haunted houses, including the Edge of Hell (Kansas City’s oldest haunted house). If you’re in the mood for local ghost lore, you can head west to the popular Atchison Haunted Trolley Tour. Atchison claims the title of “Most Haunted Town in Kansas,” and the trolley tours have been running since 1995. You can also ghost hunt at the 1859 Jail & Marshal’s Home (Independence, MO) or head north to the Elms Hotel and Spa. The Elms, featured on an episode of SyFy’s Ghost Hunters in July 2013, embraces their haunted history by offering a paranormal package where guests can go on a ghost tour and stay in luxury accommodations for two. The Glore Psychiatric Museum (St. Joseph, MO), named as “one of the 50 most unusual museums in the country,” lives up to its reputation with fascinating exhibits about the history of mental health treatment. You’ll be able to see surgical tools, equipment, restored rooms and works of art from former patients. The museum also hosts paranormal tours and overnight experiences for those looking for a more in-depth experience.

American Royal Horse Show and Rodeo

festival fun S

omething fun is always going on in Kansas City, and fall is no exception! The legendary American Royal Horse Show and Rodeo, which dates back to 1899, kicks off in September. It has a variety of events for the whole family to enjoy, like steer wrestling, roping and bull riding. Another annual favorite is the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, a 16-acre medieval-style village where you can watch live jousting, shop for unique crafts and try an array of food like turkey legs, apple dumplings and everything in between. To get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, head out to the Kaw Valley Fall Farm Tour, which takes place Oct. 5– 6 this year. The tour, now in its 15th year, supports local farmers and gives visitors the opportunity to have interactive experiences, shop for local products and see a variety of Kansas farms. Many farms sell their own products, so you can take home a piece of Kansas agriculture. Tour booklets are $10 each and are good for a full carload! About an hour and a half north of the metro is Chillicothe, MO, the home of sliced bread and the annual Chillicothe Chautauqua in the Park. It’s a two-day, family-friendly arts, crafts and music festival held in the town square. The festival requires that all items sold be “quality, original handcrafted and/or creatively enhanced by the seller,” which means shoppers can find a lot of treasures at the vendor booths! You’ll find plenty of things to do during the Powell Gardens Fall Fling (running September through October). Scavenger hunts, nature games, hikes and nearly 800 pumpkins throughout the gardens make for a lot of fall fun. Andrea Plunkett Ishmael, a Midwestern native, loves adventure in the great outdoors.

Stonehenge is on exhibit through Sept. 29, and Genghis Khan: Bringing the Legend to Life opens Oct. 24. The Museum at Prairiefire also has a current 360 VR experience about Stonehenge!

At the Museum at Prairiefire, you can discover how birds descend from dinosaurs, while viewing full-scale dinosaur skeletons and fossils. You can also learn how hundreds of millions of years ago, Kansas City was on the paleoequator! To view more dinosaur fossils and even a paleo garden, be sure to check out the KU Natural History Museum in Lawrence, KS.

19TH-CENTURY LIFE Kansas City was founded in 1838, so naturally, our city has a plethora of 19th-century historic sites. In Independence, MO, on the Pioneer Trails Adventures, you can take a horse-drawn wagon tour through the same streets as early pioneer settlers, Frank and Jesse James, Civil War generals and Wild Bill Hickok! The National Frontier Trails Museum is also a must-see in Independence. There, you can trace the history of the trails out west and discover what life was like for the pioneers. While in Independence, also check out the BinghamWaggoner Mansion, the Vaile Mansion, the 1827 Log Courthouse and the 1859 Jail. One of the most fascinating museums in Kansas City is the Arabia Steamboat Museum in the River Market. It has the most extensive pre-Civil War-era artifacts in the world! The Steamboat Arabia sank in the Missouri River in 1856 with 200 tons of cargo. The wreck, 130 years later, was excavated from a farmer’s field and all of the artifacts put on display, where you can view

THE ANCIENT WORLD At the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, you can get an up-close view of ancient history. From Egyptian mummies to Greek gods and the power of the Roman Empire, the Ancient Galleries offer so much to see. You can also see artwork from the first few hundred years of Christianity, the wonders of the Middle Ages and masterpieces of 18thcentury European artists. Another way to immerse yourself in the ancient world is by attending an exhibit at Union Station.

them today. Another fun place to explore history is the Shoal Creek Living History Museum. Throughout the year, they have live reenactments of various 19th-century decades on select weekends. My favorite historical museum in Kansas City will always be the John Wornall House Museum near Loose Park. A portion of the Battle of Westport took place on the property, and the home, built in 1858, was even commandeered as a military hospital. Each summer, they host an excellent history camp for kids, and their Halloween and Christmas programs are also a delight. Step back in time with these other educational historical sites from the days of the Wild West: Frontier Army Museum in Leavenworth, KS; Shawnee Indian Mission in Fairway, KS; Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm in Olathe, KS; Wakarusa Valley Heritage Museum in Lawrence, KS; Missouri Town 1855 in Lee’s Summit; Liberty Jail Museum; Alexander Majors House in Kansas City, MO; and Grinter Place Museum in Kansas City, KS. 20TH-CENTURY PROGRESS By the turn of the 20th century, Kansas City was booming. Today, you can visit many historic sites dedicated to preserving what life was like during the two world wars and beyond. The National World War I Museum in downtown Kansas City is one of the top-ranked museums in the nation. There, you can immerse yourself in what it was like for the soldiers in the trenches of Europe, or for the families they left behind, and you can pause at the field of poppies to remember those who did not return home. And be sure to take in the spectacular view of our city at the top of the Monument Tower. At Shawnee Town 1929, visitors can participate in what everyday life was like between the world wars. Every summer, different themed events take place— and the kids can get hands-on experience feeding chickens, maintaining a garden, washing laundry the old-fashioned way and traveling to town for supplies! At the Truman Home in Independence, MO, you can find out how our 33rd president and his family lived at the turn of the century and through the end of World War II. Get a sense of how Kansas Citians celebrated life after the end of the war with optimism and innovation at the 1950s All-Electric House in the Johnson County Museum inside the new Arts and Heritage Center. Experience a drive-in movie at the Boulevard (Kansas City) or Twin (Independence) drive-ins, or a classic diner burger at Dagwood Cafe on Southwest Boulevard or Johnny Ray’s in Lee’s Summit, MO. Or feel like a teenager again at the 1980s-themed Retro-Cade in Leavenworth, KS, or Arcade Alley in Lee’s Summit. This is just a small sampling of places where you can travel back in time in Kansas City. So get out there and explore! Margaret Bristow is a Kansas City native with a passion for local history.

THREE PLACES TO watch FOOD made IN KC

VISIT THESE ATTRACTIONS WHERE DELICIOUS FOODS ARE PRODUCED RIGHT BEFORE YOUR EYES Strawberry Hill’s povitica, a beloved traditional Eastern European dessert, is made right here in Kansas City! In 1984, the Strawberry Hill Povitica Company (913.631.1002) was opened, and now a legacy in Kansas City, the bakery is a true delight for the senses! Visit the bakery where you will be invited to enjoy a free sample with coffee and watch as artisan bakers guide you on a fun tour demonstrating the process of creating the specialty bread. The Green Dirt Farm (GreenDirtFarm.com) is a working sheep farm offering educational tours unlike any other. Guests learn why grass is the best food for the 150 ewes on the farm, how important healthy soil is to the environment and what makes the cheese so good. The highlights of the tour, though, are the final steps: watching as the sheep are milked, the cheese is made in the kitchen and tasting samples! Green Dirt Farm is one of only two sheep dairies in Missouri. You notice a building with an airplane mounted on the roof, and it stirs your curiosity. What could it be? That airplane has become the trademark of the Roasterie (816.931.4000, TheRoasterie.com), known for selling premier air-roasted coffee. The business offers one of the most entertaining free tours in town. Visitors watch as coffee goes from bean to brew. Call for reservations.

KANSAS CITY’S THEATER SCENE

A

Shines with Holiday Brilliance!

s you welcome the fall and winter months, make sure to gather family and friends for some original entertainment to warm your heart and soul. There are many great shows to enjoy throughout the holiday season. One of the most unique is Tuba Christmas (Dec. 2 & 6 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts). This annual tradition is free to attend (reservations required). Hundreds of local tuba musicians perform holiday classics in Helzberg Hall. Another musical favorite is Kansas City Symphony’s Christmas Festival (showing Dec. 20-23 at Kauffman Center). This holiday celebration is filled with festive songs of the season, carols, choirs and special guests — including St. Nick himself! Another dreamy show is The Nutcracker, Kansas City Ballet’s annual presentation of joy and sparkle, Dec. 5-24. This production, at Muriel Kauffman Theatre, Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, features professional dancers from the Kansas City Ballet Company, Second Company and also 212 students selected from Kansas City Ballet School. This show is by far the most popular of all the ballet shows each year! The story goes that Dr. Drosselmeier, a mysterious magician and creator of mechanical toys and clocks, puts the finishing touches on some magical dolls and a very special Nutcracker in his workshop on Christmas Eve. He has made them as gifts to entertain his relatives and friends at the Silberhaus home later that night.

As the lights dim, Clara returns to search for her Nutcracker until she becomes tired and falls asleep on the couch. Dr. Drosselmeier appears in the parlor to cast his magical spell. Audiences are mesmerized! This will be the second year the company will offer a sensory friendly performance on Dec. 18. Another extraordinary event to experience is A Christmas Carol, produced by the Kansas City Repertory Theatre. This time-honored tradition is in its 39th season this year, with Gary Neal Johnson in his 19th season performing as Scrooge. The director this year is Jason Chanos, who formerly served as the interim artistic director. The show features local talent, which endears it to the community. The company’s new partnership with Harvesters this year includes a canned food drive at all shows. The drive is designed to bring new relevance to this 176-yearold story, reminding the metro to care for the hungry. This life-changing performance takes place Nov. 16-Dec. 30 in the Spencer Theatre. Whichever show you choose, make this the most magical, memorable season of all. Kansas City, with the Plaza Lights, strolling carolers in local neighborhoods and the mayor’s Christmas tree, is the most perfect place of all to do this!

Judy Goppert, a Lee’s Summit writer, loves local theater.

TRAVELING THROUGH

K

the KC Arts District

ansas City has hundreds of attractions to simply marvel at, and while they all give Kansas City a unique sense of wonder, nothing—and I do mean nothing—could ever replace Kansas City’s art district. Keep reading to find out just how great this district truly is. Just north of celebrated Kauffman Stadium, home of the Royals, and south of downtown Kansas City, the Crossroads District sits in the thick of it all. If you still aren’t sure exactly where that is, start your journey at 18th & Main streets, and head east.

WINTER 2019-20 2019-20 62 KC GOING PLACES | FALL & WINTER

HELPFUL TIPS

GRAB A BITE

Tip #1 Wear comfortable shoes!

Grinders

Whether you’re out for a late-night stroll or taking in the beautiful skyline, wear a pair of shoes that won’t have you wishing you stayed at home. Exploring the Crossroads is magical but requires a good hike.

Not sure where to eat? Try Grinders, the perfect family joint with so much food! This place has everything you could want and more: soup, salad, sandwiches, pizza and dessert! Trust me when I say you won’t be disappointed. Fun fact about this place: It has two locations right next door to one another, and their backyard patio with walk-up order station keeps you close to the action, as well as to your plate.

Tip #2 Prepare for the weather. When it comes to weather, every First Friday is a little bit different. Winters and falls warrant long sleeves and sweatshirts, while springs and summers call for sunblock and umbrellas. No matter the season, check the forecast and prepare yourself and your team accordingly.

Tip #3 Bring Change! Although many love the convenience of Apple Pay and Cash App transfers, keeping some cash handy works well in this district—especially with huge affairs like First Fridays going on. My suggestion is 40 bucks and one credit card, just in case. Most of the Crossroads vendors accept cards, but I always like to keep a little cash just in case I have to pay to park or a food truck doesn’t have a working card reader.

Chances Social and Cocktail Not quite ready to call it a night? Well Chances has you covered! This Day of the Dead-themed coffee shop gives you unlimited coffee, latte, tea, espresso and sassy lemonade options. They even have four different milk options for creamers! Let’s face it, even Starbucks isn’t that savage. This hidden gem definitely gives a new look to nightcap. Chances Social 419 E. 18th St., Kansas City, MO 64108

FIRST FRIDAYS! One of the district’s best attractions happens the first Friday of each month. What is it exactly? The best way to explain the Crossroads First Fridays is as a celebration of art, food, culture and creativity. On the first Friday of each month, hundreds of vendors, food trucks, art studios, bars and restaurants open their doors to the public, inviting them to simply enjoy life. Each month the district features both local and national talents. The party starts at 5:00, so get a good parking spot and make sure you save room for dinner.

Grinders 417 E. 18th St., Kansas City, MO 64108

Mission Taco Another great eatery along 18th Street within this well-dressed district is Mission Taco! This place puts a funky twist on the classic street taco. With glutenfree, vegan and vegetarian options available, even the pickiest eaters find something to love here. They keep the guacamole fresh and the burritos huge! Not to mention, they’re within walking distance of the art galleries and entertainment. Mission Taco 409 E. 18th St., Kansas City, MO 64108 East Crossroads

CATCH AN ART SHOW Food and music draw the crowd in, but the art is what really keeps people coming back. Each month different venues host showcases of some of the most talented print makers, sculptors and painters. In most of these showcases, artists from all around collectively discuss their works, as well as sell them. Galleries sit side by side in this district and share the love they have for some of their very own friends, family members and colleagues. The galleries all treasure art and artists but also showcase their pieces in unique ways. Some fan favorites include:

• Arts KC: 106 Southwest Blvd., 816.221.1777, artskc.org • Hillard Gallery Fine Art and Custom Framing: 1820 McGee, 816.561.2956, hillardgallery.com

• Folk Alliance International:

601 Avenida Cesar E. Chavez, Ste. 100, 816.221.3655, folks.org

• Blue Gallery: 118 Southwest Blvd., 816.527.0823, BlueGalleryOnline.com
