Welcome to my hometown— where the fragrance of barbecue is always in the air!

We love our city and we hope you do, too! As you flip the pages of KC Going Places, you’ll learn of our signature fountains and their rich history, get acquainted with some of our most famous citizens and historic sites and discover the newest attractions, exhibits and events.

Visitors often ask me, “If you only have a few days—what would you see?” That is impossible to answer with a one-size-fits-all solution, but we’ve collected great itineraries across the metro, inspiration for adventurers, seasonal favorites and hot spots for shopping and dining.

For a “quick overview” of the city, be sure to visit downtown where you can enjoy shopping at Crown Center, playing with children at Legoland, taking a trip to the top of the tower at the National WWI Museum and Memorial and visiting Union Station. Take a ride aboard the free KC Streetcar where you can enjoy stops along the way, including the KC Power & Light District and City Market.

We always look forward to seasonal traditions including Royals baseball games in the summer, pumpkin patches in the fall, ice-skating at Crown Center in the winter and berry picking every spring. You’ll find an abundance of festivals, shows, exhibits and special events on the KCParent.com calendar to enjoy year-round.

CITY AND IMPROVED

NEW
Rabbit hOle

2024 is a year of firsts and the reimagining and celebrating of our city’s icons.

Everything’s up-to-date in Kansas City, as the old song goes. This year, our city celebrates brand new landmarks bedazzling the city skyline, a one-of-a-kind museum dedicated to children’s literature, a landmark exhibit celebrating the legacy of our city’s most famous citizen, and an updated home for the zoo’s resident sea lions. Additionally, the city will have new exhibits and shows to enjoy and new memories to make.

Here are the most anticipated things to enjoy in KC in 2024!

The Rabbit hOle is a literary wonderland bringing childhood memories to life.

Think of your favorite childhood picture book and, chances are, you’ll find it magically recreated in a life-size exhibit at The Rabbit hOle. Conceived by Deb Pettid and Pete Cowdin (former owners of Kansas City’s beloved Reading Reptile bookstore, a Brookside staple for years), The Rabbit hOle truly brings your favorite stories to life. Housed in a 99-year-old renovated warehouse in North Kansas City, this immersive museum featuring more than 30 exhibits will help families fall in love again with beloved classic children’s books like Caps for Sale, Madeline, Goodnight Moon and more. In addition to the museum, The Rabbit hOle includes a full-service bookstore, print shop, story lab, maker space, resource library and discovery gallery and will host teacher workshops, author and illustrator events and field trips. Disney100: The Exhibition, Union Station’s newest exhibit, celebrates Kansas City’s most legendary citizen.

Union Station is known for bringing world-class exhibits for visitors to experience firsthand. This year brings the most magical exhibit yet. Disney100 features 250 treasures from the Walt Disney Company, 14 interactive installations in 10 immersive galleries and magical memories for all ages. Walt Disney began his career as a cartoonist and entrepreneur in Kansas City, and this 20,000-squarefoot exhibit tells his story. Walt Disney created his first commercial film and met Kansas City native and Disney legend Ub Iwerks while he lived here. Now, his story returns to Kansas City with an incredible exhibition showcasing treasures from the Disney archives, including art, costumes, movie props and more. The exhibit will tell the story of a century of Disney like never before. Tickets to Disney100: The Exhibition are available ahead of the opening on May 24. UnionStation.org

Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium

The Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium is making a splash with an improved sea lion exhibit.

In 2023, the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium made a splash with the opening of the new 650,000-gallon Sobela Ocean Aquarium, increasing the number of animals at the zoo from 1,700 to nearly 10,000! This year, they’re making a splash again with the anticipated opening of a fully renovated Sea Lion Splash exhibit. Since the 1950s, the sea lions have been guest favorites, delighting visitors with their playful antics and educational shows. This year, the new facility will open with increased seating capacity, improved ADA accessibility and added behindthe-scenes space for the animals. The four California sea lions that call Kansas City home, Luna, 9, Pepper, 9, Tamale, 11, and Delilah, 13, reside behind the scenes on zoo grounds away from the construction as they await their new home. America’s first entertainment district built over a river, the Rock Island Bridge, opens this year.

Mike Zeller was boating up the Kansas River with friends who noticed the distinctive Rock Island Railroad Bridge, which was abandoned but still strong. Mike said to his pals, “Someone ought to do something with that—put a restaurant out there and call it Chicken ona Bridge.” Originally a joke, the idea is now coming to fruition. Zeller and his friends and business partners are bringing the Rock Island Bridge to life as America’s very first entertainment district over a river. The bridge spans 40 feet over the Kansas River connecting our two KCs and bridges the past, utilizing a structure that has been part of our city’s history for more than a century, with the future. The new Kansas waterfront entertainment district, dubbed the Rock Island Bridge, is the metro’s newest icon. The urban bridge will be home to live music, dining, coffee shops, bars and paths for biking and hiking. Visitors may walk or bike the trail to the bridge and cross from one state to another. Pennway Point is changing Kansas City’s skyline with a new urban playground.

Right in the heart of Kansas City, the new Pennway Point 6-acre family-friendly entertainment and experiential district boasts a 50-meter-tall Ferris wheel with heated and cooled gondolas, miniature golf, two stages for live performances, a winter outdoor ice-skating rink, outdoor volleyball and many great eateries. A fan favorite will be Neon Alley, showcasing neon signs from vintage Kansas City businesses including the beloved Katz drugs. The unique family-

friendly entertainment district will support local creativity and fun like never before. Pennway Point promises to be unexpected, interesting, creative and always new. While reclaiming the city’s past and celebrating its future, this will be a unique fun place to gather and celebrate community. Walkable access will connect Pennway Point to Union Station and the Crossroads via a proposed future Greenline trailhead. This new gathering place is a vibrant addition to Downtown KC. FOUR SEASONS OF FUN IN KC

CITY OF FOUNTAINS

Spring

Kansas Citians know that we are the City of Fountains, but you may not know that our first fountains were not for ornamental purposes. They were rather utilitarian, providing water for horses, dogs and birds. The city’s first fountain, at Fourth & Minnesota, was built for just that purpose. It featured a large pedestal and a granite basin, and the water spewed from the mouths of lions into a taller bowl where people could get clean water as well. Since that time, it is said we have added more fountains than Rome boasts. Find a map to local fountains at KCFountains.com.

FARMERS MARKETS

Kansas City is home to more than 30 farmers markets. They range from small markets selling exclusively organic produce to the City Market in Kansas City, Missouri, with more than 140 local vendors. You can purchase fruits, vegetables, plants, herbs, homemade soaps, baked goods and even live animals. If you are new to the world of the farmers market, our simple guide will get you started—check out the Farmers Market Guide on KC Parent.com.

BARBECUE

You know it’s spring in Kansas City when the aroma of barbecue fills the air. It’s hard to resist the temptation to pick up ribs at Fareway Meat Market when driving along Ward Parkway (other locations too), or make a weekend stop at one of our favorite barbecue joints. Enjoying barbecue is part of our city’s heritage. In 1908, Kansas City’s “king of barbecue,” Henry Perry, sold a slab of pork ribs for 25 cents in the 18th & Vine neighborhood. Since that time, our city has created

an art form, developing the best sauces and smoking the tastiest meats in the United States. According to the Kansas City Barbecue Society, we have more barbecue restaurants per capita than any other city in the nation. Find your guide to the best barbecue in town on KCParent.com.

BASEBALL

Since 1969, Kansas Citians have been cheering the boys in blue who’ve won two World Series championships. You also can catch a game with the Kansas City Monarchs, part of the American Association of Baseball, now at home in Kansas City, Kansas. The team formerly known as the T-Bones rebranded in a partnership with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and now celebrates part of Kansas City’s rich baseball history.

RIDE A ROLLER COASTER

Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, Missouri, opens for the season on May 4. The theme park is home to eight world-class roller coasters, including one of the tallest, longest and fastest roller coasters in the world. This thriller is the Mamba and boasts a first drop of 205 feet! New last year, the Zambezi Zinger, one of the park’s original rides, made a comeback as a reimagined wooden coaster. The Patriot is a giant coaster with four inversions and carries riders at a top speed of 65 mph. Enjoy a thrill as the entire family rides together on the Spinning Dragons, where the cars freely rotate as they speed along the track. Young children will enjoy Planet Snoopy with great rides for little ones. Worlds of Fun boasts dozens of other thrill rides and attractions for guests of all ages.

Pony rides, wagon rides, miniature tractors, an old-fashioned school, mining camp, gardens and farm animals are just part of the fun.

SPEND A LAZY DAY AT THE LAKE

Summertime at the lake—there’s not a more quintessential way to savor the season. Lake Olathe in Kansas is one of our favorite local lakes and boasts a beautiful swim beach and inflatable aqua park. For landlocked Midwesterners, it’s great to have a place where you can build sandcastles, swim with the family and jump into the water from a giant floating playground. Lake Olathe Park visitors can rent canoes, kayaks, paddle boards and pedal boats at the marina. The upper lawn at the lake is surrounded by landscaping and a small stream with a water feature that flows into a waterfall before ending in a pond. A creek leading from the pond wraps around the kid-friendly sprayground before flowing into the lake. Search “Beaches and Boating” on KCParent. com for a complete guide to local lakes.

Autumn and apples … the two go hand in hand, and this fall you can create family memories as you pick apples at a local orchard. In addition to the farms listed for apple picking, we also love Carolyn’s Pumpkin Patch in Liberty, Missouri, and Louisburg Cider Mill’s pumpkin patches in Louisburg, Kansas. The mayor’s Christmas tree at Crown Center Square (2450 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, Mo., CrownCenter.com) towers 100 feet high and is adorned with 7,200 lights. animated figures and splashes of Christmas color, making an enchanting drive-thru winter wonderland. Legendary Christmas at Legends Outlets Kansas City (1843 Village West Pkwy., Kansas City, Kan., LegendsShopping.com) is a unique lighting display on a 45-foot holiday tree created by a world-renowned, technology-driven holiday lights team, all synchronized to music. Winter Magic in North Kansas City is an amazing drive-thru experience along historic Cliff Drive. The Country Club Plaza holiday lights (Info Center: 4745 Central, Kansas City, Mo., CountryClubPlaza.com) enchants with more than 80 miles of illuminated strings of bulbs. LIVING HISTORY

The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm in Olathe, Kansas, is one of our favorite local history sites. The staff and volunteers bring history to life with annual events celebrating Christmas and teaching families how early pioneers survived winter. On snowy days, take a horse-drawn sleigh ride!

HIT THE SLOPES

Head to Weston, Missouri, for skiing and snowboarding at Snow Creek, a Midwestern ski resort (816.640.2200). Early winter, the facility offers snow skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing, as well as lessons for beginners. The most daring experience at Snow Creek is tubing at Tornado Alley. Slide down a 700-foot-long slope and then jump onto a special conveyor carpet “twister” for a ride back up!

FUN PLACES TO EAT IN KANSAS CITY

If you like to have a little fun with your food, check out these places in KC that will bring a smile to your face.

One of the newest restaurants in the Kansas City area is Kura Revolving Sushi Bar. The restaurant on the Country Club Plaza features sushi that comes to you on a conveyor belt. For every 15 sushi plates your table consumes, you will receive a prize. If anything you want doesn’t come by soon enough, you can order it on the monitor at your table, along with drinks, soup and ramen, and it will be delivered via another separate conveyor belt or by your server or a robot.

Sakura Japanese Sushi, with locations in Shawnee and Olathe in Kansas, is a no-frills restaurant offering traditional table service, hibachi and— the most fun part—a sushi train. It’s like Fritz’s for grown-ups! For the sushi part, you sit at a bar around the outside of an oval sushi prep area and wait for

the train to come by with something yummy. In addition to sushi, once in a while you’ll see a piece of cheesecake come by. Don’t be shy!

Speaking of Fritz’s, if you have kids in tow, this is the place to go! It’s an old-fashioned diner with burgers and other classic diner food cooked to order. The fun part is that all meals are delivered by train, straight to your table. Their best-known location, open for nearly 25 years now, is at Crown Center in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri. But they also have locations on the Kansas side in Shawnee and Kansas City.

If you are looking for a real treat and it is summertime, run—do not walk—directly to Jasper’s Italian Restaurant in South Kansas City, Missouri. For a few months in the summer, you can enjoy the chef’s highly acclaimed mozzarella theater, which is only done when fresh,

local, heirloom tomatoes are available. And whatever you do, don’t pass up the amazing, multilevel dessert cart.

If you need some dessert, how about ice cream made with nitrogen? Kansas City has just the place. Foggi Ice Cream, located in Mission, Kansas, offers it made fresh to order. (They also sell boba teas and coffee.) Ice cream made with nitrogen differs from traditional ice cream—it’s very cold and has a different texture, and watching the process of its being made is a lot of fun. Combined with the liquid nitrogen, your base goes from a liquid to a solid in about 45 seconds! For an extra fun time while you are there, Foggi has retro video games, board games and toys for the kids.
