editor’s letter

I

have a confession. I have been a diehard fan of my hometown my whole life. Everyone who knows me knows that I love Kansas City….with a passion! I love living here. I love raising my kids here. I love the museums, the history, the galleries, the parks, the theater, the Plaza…sometimes I even think I have barbecue sauce coursing through my veins. Okay, that may be a stretch, but you get the idea. Yet, while I love my city, I’ve long believed that Kansas City was in need of something; as great as it is, it can be better. This is the year Kansas City dares to be better. We are excited to be welcoming two attractions that have the whole town talking: the Sea Life Aquarium (my dreams are coming true) and LEGO®Land Discovery Center (my husband’s dreams are coming true!). Our landlocked Midwestern town may never have ocean views, but we are now home to ocean life! These two new attractions are just the beginning. As you read the pages of KC Going Places, you’ll discover many new parks, pools, events and attractions and many of our Kansas City originals welcoming new improvements making them better and better. It’s a great time to live in Kansas City. As Kansas City is changing and improving with the times, so is KC Going Places, a product of the KC Parent Magazine family. This year, we unveiled a brand new www.KCParent.com, complete with digital guides to the 500+ attractions our city has to offer. Just visit www.KCParent.com and click on “Guides” to discover an online directory of all the city’s best attractions complete with maps, social media plugins, websites and detailed information to help families-on-thego make the most of their experiences. Exploring and enjoying all the city has to offer is exactly what KC Going Places is all about. Whether you’ve lived in Kansas City your entire life or you’re a new visitor, you’ll find something new to discover in KC this year!

lego®land discovery center

If you’re looking for family fun on a budget, Kansas City offers many terrific free attractions the entire family will enjoy. Experience the story of Kansas City’s own Hallmark, from its founding in 1910 to the present day. Visit the Hallmark Visitor’s Center (see pg. 39) and watch as greeting cards and wrapping paper are made and participate in hands-on fun as you make a souvenir gift bow with the push of a button. Then, head next door for a visit to Kaleidoscope (see pg. 34), a free hands-on art center for children, where imaginations know no limit as kids create jigsaw puzzles, glow-in-the-dark art, crowns and more. Right across the street at Crown Center, kids enjoy free exhibits for hands-on fun. Animal Tales & Trails is open through May 6, where kids explore animal life up close. Then, Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice (May 26-Sept. 9) comes to town with realistic, fully touchable dinosaurs, including a Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops. After visiting these exhibits, head upstairs to Chip’s Chocolate Factory (see pg. 39), where your taste buds will be tempted as fudge makers demonstrate their craft and serve samples. KidScape, a free exhibit at the Johnson County Museum (see pg. 36) is an interactive kid-sized city with a hospital, city hall, theater, shops and park. Kids love to play and explore the adult world through their eyes. The Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead (see pg. 31) depicts a turn-of-the-century farm at an incredible 12-acre park with more than 200 farm animals, gardens, a dairy barn, pony rides and much more. Best of all, admission to the farm is free Monday-Thursday and only $2/person Friday-Sunday!

Sometimes we all just want to be a kid again! This year, Kansas City is the place to be for the young and the youngat-heart. LEGO®, one of the most popular children’s toys for generations, is making a new home in Kansas City with the opening of the LEGO®Land Discovery Center (see pg. 34) in Crown Center. Begin your journey on a ride into the unknown on laser chariots. Play with the world’s biggest box of LEGOS®. Watch a film in the LEGO® Studios 4D cinema and explore a miniature Kansas City that highlights 10 of KC’s most popular local attractions in LEGO® MINILAND®. Your imagination will run wild in this new family favorite! One of Kansas City’s original favorites is the Toy & Miniature Museum (see pg. 38), where visitors of all ages are awed by the incredible collection of dolls, dollhouses and historic toys in more than 30 rooms to explore. Doll lovers will love the UFDC Doll Museum (see pg. 38) with hundreds of dolls from around the world on display. Another favorite outing is the Doll Cradle in Shawnee (913.631.1900), a shop that captures every doll lover’s heart! The C.W. Parker Carousel Museum (see pg. 35) tells the story of C.W. Parker and his Leavenworth-based factory with model railroads, merry-go-rounds and a ride for visitors on an authentic 1913 carousel. Bonner Springs is the perfect destination to play all day. Like Alice slipping through the rabbit hole, at Moon Marble (see pg. 39) you’ll discover gizmos and gadgets labeled, “Try Me.” As a treat, fill a tube with your favorite marbles, then reach into the mouth of the “Marble Genie” to select the perfect shooter to complete the set. Call ahead for a schedule to watch marble making.

american jazz museum

fritz’s railroad restaurant

It’s been said that jazz was born in New Orleans, but it grew up in Kansas City. There’s no place better to experience Kansas City jazz than at 18th & Vine with a visit to the American Jazz Museum (see pg. 34) and a live concert at the Gem or the Blue Room. The Jazz Museum presents the story of jazz and Kansas City with interactive exhibits that allow visitors to create their own sound and experience the talent of the most exceptional jazz performers to ever live… past or present. Kansas City is becoming a hub for children’s music performers. We love the rock ‘n roll, kid-friendly style of The Doo Dads, Funky Mama, Dino O’Dell, Mr. Stinky Feet and others. They bring joy to KC kids at their live concerts all year long, including the annual KC Jiggle Jam every Memorial Day weekend at Crown Center! Watch the calendar on www.KCParent.com for listings. The Kansas City Symphony (see pg. 43) offers yearround performances for all ages, now at the beautiful Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts (see pg. 42). From the KinderKoncerts for young children, to the Family Concert Series, including this year’s summer concert, Disney in Concert: Magical Music from the Movies, the symphony offers delightful entertainment for the whole family. But, our favorite of all is the free annual event, Celebration at the Station on Memorial Day weekend, when the symphony puts on a world-class patriotic performance saluting veterans and America with a grand finale fireworks display over Liberty Memorial.

Screaming in tunnels, listening to the rhythm of the tracks and waving at passersby… memories of train rides are a highlight of childhood. Visit the Midland Railway in Baldwin City, KS, (see pg. 25) for the annual Day Out with Thomas the Train or holiday rides. Or, embark on a trip aboard the Belton, Grandview & Kansas City Railroad (see pg. 25) where families delight in ice cream social rides and other seasonal events. Tempt your taste buds with lunch at Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant (www.FritzsKC.com), where model trains deliver lunch right to your table! Or, spend a day at Union Station (see pg. 37), where you can ride the rails with Amtrak or enjoy the history of trains at the KC Rail Experience. The Overland Park Arboretum (see pg. 31) is a favorite attraction for local families, and now the appeal is growing with the inauguration of the Train Garden. A child-size ticket booth, a train-themed retaining wall and memorial railroad tie walkway are just part of the unique landscaping. The most exciting feature is the observation deck attached to the caboose to provide a bird’s-eye view of the G-scale tracks and trains, including a water feature, bridges and tunnels. The garden is a work in progress with many fun features coming! Amtrak also boasts many stations in the Metro offering great day trips or vacation options. See www.KCParent.com and search for Amtrak for tips!

kansas city zoo

Travel the world without leaving Kansas City! First stop: the Kansas City Zoo (see pg. 31)! Every year, the zoo just gets better and better! With a world-class polar bear exhibit, allnew African Sky Safari that enables visitors to get a bird’s eye view of Africa and the fantastic indoor Tropics exhibit all having opened in recent years, it’s always exciting to discover what’s next. This year, the zoo is excited to announce a visit to Sumatra, with a new home for the tigers, nearly four times larger than the old exhibit and featuring climbing rocks, lush hillside and waterfalls. The natural setting provides an ideal home for the tigers and a more enjoyable and educational experience for families. Next, explore art from around the world at the NelsonAtkins Museum of Art (see p. 34), one of Kansas City’s FREE treasures. For added fun, check www.KCParent.com for a Nelson-Atkins Scavenger Hunt the kids will love! You can take the kids out to eat at a great ethnic restaurant (see www.KCParent.com for a list of our favorite family-friendly ethnic restaurants), followed by a visit to one of Kansas City’s many ethnic museums. The Strawberry Hill Museum (see pg. 38) houses permanent exhibits for Croatia, the Ukraine, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Russia. The Irish Museum and Cultural Center (see pg. 36) tells the story of Irish immigration to Kansas City with artifacts, photos and genealogical sources.

Visit a magical world of childhood fantasies-come-true during the imaginative exhibition, May 19-Oct. 6, of Fairy Houses & Forts: An Enchanting Garden Adventure, at Powell Gardens (see pg. 31). The beautiful display showcases largescale fairy houses and fanciful forts to amuse and delight guests of all ages. Fantasy comes to life this summer at Kansas City’s theaters. KC Starlight Theatre (see pg. 43), Kansas City’s original outdoor theater, presents the tale of the boy who “won’t grow up” when Cathy Rigby stars in Peter Pan, July 24-29. Your children will be swept away by the magic of Tinker Bell, flying pirate ships and Neverland. Pack a picnic for Shawnee Mission Theatre in the Park’s (see pg. 44) presentation of a Disney double feature with Jungle Book and Sleeping Beauty, showing July 6-15. And enjoy the classic tale of the Princess and the Pea at Coterie’s (see pg. 42) showing of Once Upon a Mattress, June 19-Aug. 5. Kansas City is rich with terrific parks and green spaces, many of them featuring creative playgrounds with largerthan-life animals, castles, pirate ships, fire trucks and more. Visit www.KCParent.com and search for “Best Parks” to discover our top picks. The newest addition to our list of favorites is Meadowmere Park’s Brumble’s Forest (13610 Byars Rd., Grandview, MO). The park, opening spring 2012, features an incredible playground depicting a magical forest kingdom.

Your kids will have the time of their lives at Kansas City’s indoor water park, CoCo Key (see pg. 50), featuring 55,000 square feet of indoor fun with a wading pool, slides, fast tube rides, activity pools and more! This year, South Kansas City welcomes The Bay (see pg. 51), a brand new outdoor water park with a lazy river, waves, slides, 6-lane pool and many more great attractions your kids are sure to love. Another favorite outdoor water park is Kansas City’s original Oceans of Fun (see pg. 52) with fantastic attractions for all ages, including Aruba Tuba, Surf City Wave Pool, Buccaneer Bay, Coconut Cove and much more! Discover more pools and water parks beginning on pg. 50. If you crave some sand between your toes, you’ll find swim beaches at several local lakes listed on pg. 48, or you can challenge your friends to sand volleyball at Volleyball Beach (13105 Holmes Rd., KC, MO, 816.942.2820), Shawnee Mission Volleyball Beach (19800 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, KS, 913.422.4070) or Centerline Beach Volleyball (1910 U.S. 40, Blue Springs, MO, 816.224.4455).

For early pioneers heading west on the California, Oregon and Santa Fe trails, Kansas City, Westport and Independence played vital roles as jumping off points and port cities for the Missouri River. Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farmstead (see pg. 37) in Johnson County brings the 1850s to life with tours and programs all year, including stagecoach rides, family programs and a working blacksmith shop. Spend a day in Independence, MO, at the National Frontier Trails Museum (see pg. 38) loading a wagon, listening to the memories of pioneers and learning about westward expansion. For a truly historic experience, take a wagon tour with Pioneer Trails Adventures (see pg. 38) and discover the history of Independence, from the early settlers to Truman. For a remarkable living history experience, journey back to the 19th century at Missouri Town (see pg. 38), where more than 20 historic buildings have been restored, creating a pioneer village with fantastic living history events all year long. In the Northland, Shoal Creek Living History Museum (see pg. 38) is a small historic village presenting hands-on history through educational programs, including a working grist mill.

GEOCACHING

ooking for new and exciting ways to spend family time? How about a high-tech treasure hunt around town? It’s called geocaching (pronounced jeeoh-cashing), and it’s the fun, new way families are getting out of the house to spend time together. Geocaching works like this: People leave small, cheap treasures (caches) in a container, log the longitude and latitude of the container online (www.Geocaching.com), and encourage others to find the treasure. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the cache. Once a cache is found, the finder signs and dates the log inside, replaces the treasure with their own, and hides the cache back in the location they found it. Once home, they log their finds online; some people even include photos. Raytown mom Stacy Wagstaff says she first learned of geocaching at one of her son’s Cub Scout meetings. “I thought it sounded like a great thing I could do with my boys, a way to get them away from the ever-present video games,” she says. “Geocaching takes you to places you never knew were there before. I’ve been to many parks, monuments, cemeteries and historical sites I never knew existed.” Wagstaff says that the caches (which can vary in size) are often found in such places as tree stumps, tree holes or under rocks. “Look for something that doesn’t seem to belong. I’ve seen containers as small as a pencil eraser to one in a fivegallon bucket!” she says. “If it’s big enough for swag (trinkets and goodies), you can trade. Always bring swag with you if you’re planning on trading; this is how the caches stay 18 kc going places | spring & summer 2012

stocked with goodies.” Kansas City mom Shannon Griffeth, who recently geocached with her son and his Cub Scout pack, says it was not only fun, but a great learning experience for everyone. Her son, Taylor, agrees. “It was really cool. We got to learn about things, got to see a rabbit and, at the end, we got one-dollar coins!” he says. Both moms agree that geocaching is a great activity for families, individuals and couples alike! “Geocaching can be a great date activity. For my birthday, my husband and I go caching together without the kids. It’s a free activity and gives us some exercise as well as outdoor time,” Wagstaff says. “Geocaching is many things in one: an afternoon hike in the woods, lessons in geography, teamwork and even survival skills. Plus, being able to find something with very few clues to do so,” Griffeth says. “It’s a rewarding experience!” Want to learn more about geocaching? Take a class! Many places offer geocaching classes for beginners around the greater Kansas City area, such as the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Powell Gardens, through community education classes and local parks & recreation departments. Classes are offered at various times throughout the year, so check websites for details. Kansas City mom Gina Klein is a writer and photographer who loves geocaching around town with her husband and two daughters.

mart parents know that getting kids excited about learning begins with play. Children soak in knowledge best by exploring their surroundings, and in Kansas City, opportunities abound for bridging learning with serious fun.

PIONEER THE PAST Hitch a ride on the Oregon Trail back to the days of pioneers. The National Frontier Trails Museum offers combination tickets for a tour of the museum and a covered wagon ride through historic Independence from Pioneer Trails Adventures. While you’re there, be sure to walk along the quarter-mile pathway that circles the swales—wagon rut indentations still mark where thousands of wagons passed. National Frontier Trails Museum 318 W. Pacific Ave., Independence, MO

TOUR THE OVAL OFFICE After an introductory film about our country’s 33rd president, transport your family to the White House on a tour of Harry S. Truman’s full-scale Oval Office. Become executives-in-chief for a day with two floors of documents, photographs, videos and artifacts to peruse. Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum 500 W. BECOME A MARINE BIOLOGIST Journey from the fresh waters of the Missouri River to the coral reefs of the Caribbean, and finally plunge into the deepest trenches of the Atlantic Ocean at Kansas City’s SEA LIFE, at Crown Center. Your little guppies will be wowed by the underwater tunnel and shark-infested tropical ocean tank. They can even wet their hands with real starfish and crabs in the Touchpool Experience. Sea Life 2475 Grand, KC, MO

BUILD KNOWLEDGE Also at Crown Center, LEGO®Land Discovery Center is more than child’s play. For a geography lesson, tour the miniature Kansas City area at MINILAND and help your kids locate favorite landmarks. At the LEGO Racers Build and Test Zone, engineer your own racer for the speed test track, then make adjustments for a more aerodynamic ride. Take a lesson from a LEGO master at the Model Builder’s Workshop, enjoy a 4-D LEGO movie experience and top off your visit with an adventure ride. Everywhere you turn, opportunities abound to expand your child’s creativity and spatial intelligence. LEGO®Land Discovery Center 2475 Grand, KC, MO

Science City, located in Kansas City’s Union Station, is a place of unbridled exploration and experimentation. • City Park/Music Park: Spin a zoetrope, practice musical drums, dance a tune across the floor piano and ride the sky bike across a tightrope. • DinoLab/Digsite: Become a paleontologist for a day at the Digsite and uncover ancient dinosaur fossils. P L AY T I M E

P L AY T I M E cool summer nights in the city The weather is great and the days seem to go on forever. Nights in Kansas City beckon you and your family to get out and play. Rain or shine, we have family fun time covered!

T-Bones The Boulevard and I-70 Drive-Ins These iconic blasts from the past are still going strong in Kansas City. The Boulevard’s season opens this April with a new digital projector, along with digital sound. A date to put on the calendar right away is April 28. From 3:00 until 11:00, enjoy a Superheroes on the Boulevard event for $25 per carload. The fun will include a triple feature of superhero movies, moonwalks/inflatables, face painting, a balloon artist and much more. I-70 Drive-In boasts the largest drive-in in Missouri with its multi-screen complex. A budget-friendly venue, the theater only charges admission for ages 12 and up!

a little family competition Dave and Buster’s

Located at The Legends, this venue offers food, games, billiards and shuffleboard. When you put money on a Power Card, your kids won’t have to fumble with coins or game tokens. Also, all day on Wednesdays, enjoy half-off games.

Sporting KC and T-Bones Livestrong Park, home to the Sporting KC men’s soccer team, is something to see. It is a fantastic venue to witness some of the best athletes show off their stuff. Every seat has a great view, as well as protection from the elements! We all know how unpredictable Kansas weather can be!

movie night, rain or shine AMC Studio 30 in Olathe

This theater has done some updating, and the old concession stand and long lines are history. The new self-serve area now offers chicken tenders, curly fries, chef salads, veggie plates, dessert bites, popcorn, candy, bottled drinks, ice cream and milkshakes, as well as a new Freestyle dispenser by Coca-Cola. They also have a new reward program called AMC Stubs that gives you $10 for every $100 you spend. Other benefits include free upgrades on soda and popcorn, waiver of online ticket purchase fees and even an online ticket stub collection to document your movie experiences.

Just next door, the T-Bones baseball team, which joined the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball league back in 2010, is kicking off their season on May 17. A ton of home games give Kansas Citians and visitors plenty of opportunities to watch the “boys of summer.” Cool things about this ballpark: a play area in full view of the game, more bathrooms than you can swing a bat at and a kid-sized concession stand with lower prices. Wednesdays are designated as family nights and have a Lil’ Chops Kids Club with all sorts of cool perks. Sounds like a home run to me! Hallie Sawyer, Overland Park, is a freelance writing mom who has fond memories of family nights spent at her hometown drive-in. This summer she plans on creating some for her own brood.

t’s summer, and for kids that means it’s time to get messy! Whether playing in the dirt, digging for treasure or creating concoctions for the family art gallery or lunch... kids making messes are a part of childhood. To satisfy their need to create without wreaking havoc on your home, consider a family-friendly make-a-mess outing where your children can exert some creative energy and leave the mess behind!

Things That Go Splat! Challenge your kids to a game of paintball at one of Kansas City’s numerous paintball fields! Find a location near you on pg. 54. When we ask our readers to name their favorite places to play, Jaegers always makes the top of the list. It stands out because of the option to engage in paintball warfare in a cave or “top side” with an outdoor obstacle course. Both options are stimulating, one-of-a-kind and adventurous. A word of caution for beginners: bumps and bruises are inevitable, but paintball fanatics say it’s worth it!

At Powell Gardens, you can look out from the top of a silo onto a quilt square garden full of wonderful edible plants and foods—many Arboretum that may surprise you—and the annual Butterfly Festival in August is a family tradition. The Monet Garden and Children’s Gardens at the Overland Park Arboretum are wonderful for photography and a day of play. And, education abounds at the Beanstalk Children’s Garden, where special programs are designed with kids in mind.

Paradise Park (1021 NE Colbern Rd., Lee’s Summit, MO, 816.246.5224, www.Paradise-Park.com) is a 38,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor family fun extravaganza. The indoor Children’s Edutainment Center features hands-on exhibits for younger children with theme-based play that is often messy, but always creative and educational! Your children may paint their own faces, play at the water table, create a masterpiece in the art center or cook up a delicious treat in the kitchen. Older kids will enjoy the outdoor fun of go-karts, miniature golf and batting cages! And the whole family will relish the indoor fun of bumper cars, a rock climbing wall and arcade. The highlight though, is the Foam Factory, where you can fire foam balls at opponents with air-pressure guns and tubes for a chaotic, but fun experience!

Beginning Builders!

Twice a month, kids can participate in the Lowe’s Build and Grow projects, on select Saturdays from 10:00 to Noon. Kids complete a wooden project (kits provided) and earn a red apron and patch. Or, on the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 to Noon, try the Home Depot Kids Workshops for children ages 5-12. Children build a take-home project and receive an orange apron and an achievement pin. Both FREE programs provide the children with a kit to create their own project. Some projects include toolboxes, fire trucks, jewelry boxes, banks, planters, birdhouses and picture frames. Children learn basic carpentry skills and leave with a sense of achievement and a completed project. Still looking for more great family fun ideas in Kansas City? family float trips F

loat trips are a great source of summer family fun and memories. I know several people who still excitedly reminisce about the float trips of their youth. Plus, float trips can be reasonably priced for even the tighter family budget. Planning a float trip is as much fun as the actual float. The first things that need to be decided are when and where to go. June to August are the prime months, but spring and fall have equally great floating opportunities. Weekends and holidays tend to be the busiest, especially at some of the more popular Ozark spots. Weekdays tend to offer a quieter family environment. If you’d like to try something different, consider the Platte or Grand rivers in northern Missouri. The Platte flows from the Iowa state line to the Missouri River, just north of KC. The Grand River is another tributary of the Missouri River that has a north-central location. Both require floaters to bring their own equipment, rather than renting it onsite, but feature several lovely conservation areas. A Paddler’s Guide to Missouri from the Missouri Department of Conservation is a good source of information about these and other less-traveled rivers. While Kansas is a drier state with fewer public rivers and streams, most of the floating streams are located close to KC. Paddling Kansas by Dave Murphy is an excellent source of information for Kansas rivers and streams. The Kansas (or Kaw) River is an excellent beginner river. An organization dedicated to conserving this river, Friends of the Kaw, has a site (www.Sites.Google.com/site/FriendsOfTheKaw/) about its efforts and offers group float trips and canoe rentals.

get more!

A float trip can be as short as an afternoon or as long as several days, so be sure to plan your supplies accordingly. Proper personal floatation devices, swimsuits, plenty of drinking water, sunscreen and bug spray are essential. Other necessities include waterproof containers for food and trash and dry changes of clothes. Consider adding an overnight campout or fishing along the way for extra fun. Don’t forget to bring a waterproof camera to capture the great memories and scenery during your trip. The Missouri Department of Conservation has a page of contact information for outfitters (www.MDC.mo.gov/Discover-Nature). And the Missouri Canoe and Floaters Association offers useful information about the rivers and outfitters in the Ozarks (www.MissouriCanoe.org). As with any outdoor excursion, be aware of local, state and federal requirements. Missouri has stepped up its regulations to encourage a responsible, family- and ecosystem-friendly environment on popular float byways. Regulations include no glass or styrofoam containers, except for those designs specifically for fishing, and limitations on alcohol. Generally following a “leave no trace” ethic is the best and most responsible way to float, no matter where you go. It ensures everyone has fun and the river is conserved for the next time you wish to visit. Heather Shields, a lifetime Kansas City native, is a naturalist and a biology teacher at Ruskin High School.

Steamboat Arabia

ONLY

IN KANSAS CITY

A Billion Dollar Experience Have you ever seen $40 million in cash? Have you ever held a gold bar? At the Money Museum, your little coin collectors can see every coin ever made in the United States, and little detectives can test their skills at identifying counterfeit currency. You can watch the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City employees and robots sort and move cash for distribution to the nation’s commercial banks. This is one of only two Federal Reserve Money Museums in the states. And best of all, the friendly staff will give you a bag full of cash to take home– shredded of course. Discover a Buried Treasure – Steamboat Arabia On Sept., 5, 1856, the Steamboat Arabia, fully loaded with fresh supplies and westward-bound passengers, hit a snag on the Missouri River. She rapidly sank into the swirling thick, muddy waters. Despite numerous salvage attempts, the Arabia—and her cargo—remained lost to the river. But over time, the river shifted. In 1988, the Arabia was discovered in a farmer’s field about a half-mile from the river. This unique exhibit is the result of a long recovery effort revealing thousands of well-preserved artifacts from the 1850s. Play with the Greats Kansas City has a little-known but significant jazz history that’s nicely commemorated at the American Jazz Museum. Your little musicians can practice mixing music, try the harmonizing stations and listen to the jazz greats with the museum’s interactive exhibits. Hear live jazz in the Blue Room, or across the street at the restored Gem Theatre, you can see performances by jazz masters in the Jazz Museum’s “Jammin’ at the Gem” concert series.

Get your money’s worth by visiting the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, housed in the same building. Although small, both museums are informative and interesting. Stroll Through History The Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum was the first of 12 presidential libraries. It exhibits memorabilia from Truman’s life and includes a research facility. You can see his preserved office and, in the courtyard, you’ll find his burial site. Check out the free film series and the “Second Saturdays” information program. Explore the historic district, laden with historic markers. See where the former president met his wife, went to school, worked, lived, played poker and drank whiskey. Fun for Young and Old The Toy and Miniature Museum, housed in the former Tureman Mansion, captures the imaginations of visitors young and old with its incredible collection of dollhouses, dolls, model trains, marbles and antique toys from around the world. Families appreciate the special touches throughout the exhibits, including “touch me” buttons with working lights so you can see inside the tiniest of dollhouses, and step stools so little ones can see at their eye level. This is one destination loved by all generations. You’ll enjoy exploring childhood memories of years gone by through one of the most fun and magical museums in Kansas City! INSIDE SCOOP: JEREMIAH BOEHR ®

LEGO Land Discovery Center (LDC) Kansas City Jeremiah brings the magic of LEGO to life in Kansas City, designing and building new models used for displays, workshops and birthday parties. He is looking forward to teaching kids and adults how to create different and interesting models through the Master Builder Academy at LEGO®Land, in addition to hosting special events and outreach in the local community and schools. Jeremiah says, “Being an MMB is more than just a job. It is a dream come true and the best part is sharing that dream with everyone who loves Lego, too.” KCGP: Must-see KC attraction for out-of-town guests? Jeremiah: The LEGO®Land Discovery Center Kansas City, of course! We are very excited about our opening. I would also add that visitors in the fall should check out the Kansas City Renaissance Festival in Bonner Springs, just west of downtown. Both places are magical and entertain the idea that you can be or do anything by using your imagination. KCGP: Best kept secret in KC? Jeremiah: Definitely the Westside North neighborhood (just west of downtown, across I-35) on the corner of West 17th & Summit. The restaurants there (Blue Bird Bistro, The Westside Local and Chez Elle Creperie and Coffeehouse) are a few of the best places to eat. They are locally owned and offer locally-grown menu items. It’s a good spot for great food that helps support local Kansas City businesses. KCGP: Best place to spend a summer night in KC? Jeremiah: I really enjoy spending a summer evening on the patios of locally-owned restaurants on the Plaza, Westport, Brookside or Crossroads areas, enjoying good food and great friends. KCGP: One personal fave? Jeremiah: Latteland on the Plaza, because they make some of the best beverages in town and the people watching is always great! KCGOINGPLACES.COM

SHOWTIME dance & music in the city

K

ansas City is nationally famous for being the City of Fountains and the home of great barbecue. But as its residents can testify, it is also the place where truly legendary music is birthed, rehearsed and performed. From the moment you walk through the beautiful handcarved doors of KC Strings in Merriam, you know you are someplace special. Luthier Anton Kruz is a Gepetto-like craftsman, drawing magic out of the wood with which he works. One of only 200 violin makers in the United States, he has a name legendary in the strings world. KC Strings is the only shop in the United States that currently builds violins, violas, celli and bass from scratch. Its instruments make their way across the globe and into some of the most prestigious music halls throughout the nation. KC Strings provides full-service repair, rentals and lessons covering a broad range of styles on all stringed instruments in the adjacent conservatory building. For an in-depth tour of the shop, contact the Merriam Visitors Bureau. The marriage of both old and new has particular meaning at one downtown icon: the Todd Bolender Center of Dance & Creativity. Built in 1914, the building originally functioned as the Power House for Union Station, the post office and the Liberty Memorial. In its new capacity, the Bolender Center is the headquarters for the Kansas City Ballet. The largest studio in the building was constructed with the exact same dimensions as the main stage in the Kauffman Center, giving professional dancers greater ease and familiarity while rehearsing for upcoming productions. The studio also functions as a 180-

seat theater where guests can view formal performances and choreographic numbers. The Bolender Center’s multiple stories house a conference center, as well as studio space and classrooms that offer a wide range of classes for both the professional and the amateur, including adult beginners dance, jazz and Pilates. If you’ve lived in the City for any length of time, you may have noticed that the downtown skyline has been graced with a new addition to its silhouette. After four years of construction, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts has changed the landscape of our city for the better. The center boasts two large auditoriums: the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Theatre and Helzberg Hall. The Kauffman Center is dedicated to enriching the Kansas City area with top quality productions from both near and far. Resident companies such as the Kansas City Symphony, the Lyric Opera and the Kansas City Ballet now have a new place to call home. The center also showcases a variety of artists and productions of national and international acclaim. The sights and sounds of Kansas City are like none other, but perhaps one of the greatest contributions our city has made to the arts is the many facilities that house them. Whether you are new or a native of the Kansas City area, consider taking some time to discover the many venues where music comes to life. Lauren Greenlee purchased her first violin at KC Strings and loves to take in the arts around the city. She and her family reside in Olathe.

Kansas City Ballet

Kimberly Cowen works hard making sure the students of the Kansas City Ballet School get the best ballet/dance training there is, while providing a nurturing and positive environment for them to learn and grow. Kim wants to pass on the joy of dancing to as many young people as she can: “It is extremely gratifying to watch them set goals for themselves and achieve them. Their confidence grows and they meet each new challenge with even more determination.” KCGP: Favorite park in KC? Kim: Loose Park is my favorite park. You find so many different people enjoying the beauty of nature, whether it is a family watching the geese or an artist drawing in the garden. You find a place where people can relax on a blanket and read or play frisbee with their dog or play with their children in the playground. You find family reunions and weddings. Loose Park is a place where you can unplug and be reminded of how beautiful life is around us. KCGP: Must-see KC attraction for out-of-town guests? Kim: Kansas City has so many things to offer, but my top two attractions for out-of-town guests would be The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts. KCGP: Best kept secret in KC? Kim: I have always loved going to the Steamboat Arabia Museum… an actual treasure in Kansas City! KCGP: Best place to spend a summer night in KC? Kim: A great place to spend a summer night would be at Kauffman Stadium taking in a Royals game or maybe going to Christopher Elbow’s Glacé Artisan Ice Cream Parlor (4960 Main St., KC, MO). KCGP: Best date night for parents? Kim: Best date night for parents would, of course, be taking your lovely wife to see the Kansas City Ballet. She will love you for it. Not only will you be enjoying a thrilling night at the ballet, but you will also get to experience and marvel at the beauty of the new Kauffman Center for Performing Arts. KCGOINGPLACES.COM

INSIDE SCOOP: KRISTA EYLER

Funky Mama

Krista Eyler grew up in Overland Park and now writes and performs original rock n’ roll for families in and around the Kansas City area at local parks, children’s museums and fun family venues as “Funky Mama.” KCGP: Growing up in KC, what was your fave place? Funky Mama: It was an incredible and rare adventure as a kid to get to go to Royals Stadium (now “The K”), because my brother and I got to watch superstars like George Brett and Willie Wilson play ball in the 1980s. My brother always pretended to be #5 (George Brett) and, since I was a total tomboy, I pretended to be #6 (Willie Wilson). KCGP: Favorite family-friendly KC restaurant? Funky Mama: Avelluto’s Italian Delight (6522 Martway St.) in Merriam off of Johnson Drive. I’ve been going there since high school for the no-frills environment, but incredible Italian food. My kids love their homemade pizza. KCGP: Favorite park in KC? Funky Mama: I love Shawnee Mission Park (79th & Renner Rd.); it has beautiful, easily accessible, kid-friendly trails through the woods and around the lake. My family and I go exploring many times during the year and see how many deer we can spot. KCGP: Best kept secret in KC? Funky Mama: Southmoreland Bed and Breakfast, which is hidden in the streets between the Country Club Plaza and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. It’s such a wonderful idea for a stay-cation. Stuffed French toast in the morning! KCGP: One of your personal KC faves? Funky Mama: The best ice cream shop in town is Mely’s Ice Cream and Yogurt (4051 Somerset Dr., Prairie Village, KS). Mely is a dear lady, and she and her husband, Bob, serve up some pretty yummy frozen creations! I love a business owner who greets my kids by name as we enter. That’s what living in KC is all about.

INSIDE SCOOP: MATT KESSLER

Bass player for The Doo-Dads Doo-Dad Matt Kessler is the hippest bass player in town! Rockin’ and rollin’ with the Doo-Dads at concerts for kids all around KC, Matt is one of our favorite KC dads. KCGP: Growing up in KC, what was your fave place? Doo-Dad Matt: I’ve always been fascinated with the Liberty Memorial and Union Station. It is such a great view looking out over the downtown skyline from the Memorial. You can see the lay of the land and how the Kansas and Missouri rivers define how the city was built. Looking down the hill at Union Station, you can imagine how it must have been when it was a bustling train station. It was the heart of the city. Union Station is such a beautiful KC landmark. I’m really glad it has been revitalized. KCGP: Favorite family-friendly KC restaurant? Doo-Dad Matt: Italian Delight (6522 Martway St.) in Mission, KS. It is family-owned and -operated serving fantastic New York style pizza. My family and I have been regulars there for years, and my daughter absolutely loves it. KCGP: Favorite park in KC? Doo-Dad Matt: There are a lot of great parks in Kansas City. It seems like every neighborhood has its own park, but probably the most famous in KC is Loose Park. The rose garden is really terrific. There is a history lesson there, too. Loose Park was the ground for the Battle of Westport. KCGP: Must-see KC attraction for out-of-town guests? Doo-Dad Matt: While you’re visiting the Liberty Memorial, you should take the time and go through the World War I Museum. It is right there hidden under the memorial, the only WWI memorial in the U.S.! It is really cool and well worth visiting. 44 kc going places | spring & summer 2012

By Kristina Light

hether you prefer the excitement of an urban vacation, an Ozark mountain getaway, wild animals and water adventures or the opportunity to step back in time and visit another culture, we have four fabulous family getaways only five hours (or less) from Kansas City!

Branson, Missouri: Once in a while, it’s fun to be “a little bit country,” and Branson, the vacation capital of the Midwest, is the perfect destination for just such a family vacation! Branson’s most popular attraction is Silver Dollar City (www.SilverDollarCity.com). It’s an 1880s-styled amusement park with thrill rides, including Fire in the Hole, a roller coaster through a mineshaft; Tom and Huck’s RiverBlast, where you enjoy “America’s biggest water battle;” and more than 30 other rides. Last year introduced Half Dollar Holler, a super-sized children’s play area, and the return of SDC’s vintage carousel. Live shows, annual festivals, craft demonstrations and a tour through Marvel Cave are also part of the fun!

Silver Dollar City

Kids love riding the Ducks (www.Branson.RideTheDucks.com), refurbished military vehicles that travel on both land and water. Quack duck calls as you ride through town and conclude with a big splash into Table Rock Lake for a cruise where children “co-pilot” the boat. Also visit the Titanic (www.TitanicBranson.com), a replica of the legendary ship with attractions for the whole family. Dixie Stampede (www.DixieStampede.com) is a dinner show unlike any other! The event includes horse acts, comedy, music and a menagerie of animals from ostriches to pot belly pigs. Everyone is served a full meal with one fun catch: the entire meal is “finger food.” KCGOINGPLACES.COM

Amana Colonies, Iowa: For modern families wanting to experience a simpler time, the Amanas are a welcome retreat. You’ll step back in time with a visit to the Amana Colonies a national historic landmark consisting of seven villages. Founded in Iowa in 1855, the Amanas are one of America’s longest-lived and largest religious communal societies, where the traditions of German craftsmanship are showcased at local shops and businesses.

Omaha Zoo Branson is overflowing with fun lodging choices. For a truly unique experience, visit Caboose Junction (http://CabooseJunctionResort.com) in Lampe, MO, just 30 minutes from Silver Dollar City. There, your family can enjoy the adventure of staying in converted cabooses complete with bunk beds, full beds, bathrooms and kitchenettes.

Omaha, Nebraska: Omaha is a great vacation destination for families, with one of the best zoos in the nation, an incredible water resort at CoCo Key and an array of other fun attractions. Begin at the Omaha Zoo (www.OmahaZoo.com), where you can ride the Skyfari for a view overlooking animals in worldclass exhibits. Walk on the wild side in the Lied Jungle and marvel at the Scott Aquarium with a 70-foot-long underwater walk-through tunnel with sharks, stingrays and ocean life. The most entertaining place to stay is CoCo Key (www.CocoKeyWaterRestort.com), an indoor water resort with an Olympic-size pool, beach entry pool, water slides, Parrot’s Perch, the giant water playground, dip-in kiddie pool, a lazy river and more, all housed in a luxurious hotel. Next, explore the interactive exhibits at the Omaha Children’s Museum (www.OCM.org), including the Imagination Playground, the Splish Splash Garden and Science and Technology Lab. The hands-down favorite, though, is the giant ball machine where kids send balls through an exciting maze of contraptions. You may also want to visit the Durham Museum (www.DurhamMuseum.org), housed in Omaha’s restored Union Station, with historic exhibits and an authentic soda fountain. Or, take a trip to the Lauritzen Gardens (www.LauritzenGardens.org), a 100-acre botanical garden with an exquisite Victorian garden, an educational children’s garden and model railroad garden. And don’t leave the city without a royal experience as you tour the 1903 Scottish-inspired Joslyn Castle (www.JoslynCastle.com). 46 kc going places | spring & summer 2012

Begin at the Amana Heritage Museum, where you’ll learn the story of the colonies and the culture through videos and exhibits. Then, shop at the High Amana General Store, a museum-operated 1858 village store. From shop to shop, witness firsthand the art of making quilts, lace, clocks, metal crafts, brooms, baskets, wine and more. Be sure to visit www.AmanaColonies.org and request a visitor’s guide for tips

The Exploration Place (www.Exploration.org) makes science both educational and entertaining with traveling and permanent exhibits. Learn about nature, the human body, space, animal life and more. Our favorite attraction is the interactive castle where young children pretend to live and work, pumping bellows, making tools, cooking, blacksmithing, studying astronomy and dressing up and jousting on a child-sized wooden horse. For fun family dining, enjoy a Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper (www.PrairieRoseChuckwagon.com), with an all-you-caneat dinner, wagon and train rides, free movies and a musical stage show.

and calendars to plan your trip. Some shops are not open year-round or every day; weekends are best.

A DAY AT THE RACES

SPORTS

SPORTS

There are also sponsor displays around the track, where kids can participate in activities like simulator booths and remote control car racing. And don’t forget about the pre-race flyovers, concerts and other exciting events that will entertain kids (and parents!) all day long. Plus, we all know that Kansas City loves to tailgate and NASCAR fans are no exception. Make a whole day of it by setting up your own or “tailgate” at the Legends shopping and dining area (T-Rex and Dave & Busters are both close by), if that is more your speed.

I

f you have a little boy in the house, you know that boys of all ages love anything with wheels…and the faster the better! My son has spent countless hours racing Matchbox cars and Lightning McQueen all over our house since the minute he could walk. So what kid wouldn’t love to see those super-fast racecars up close? Though NASCAR is not usually the first sporting event that comes to mind when you consider family-friendly outings, it is in many ways a perfect way to spend a day as a family! We are so lucky to have the Kansas Speedway right in our backyard…why not give it a try? NASCAR isn’t for families? Wrong! NASCAR is a very family-friendly sport and the Kansas Speedway welcomes families. They strive for a familyfriendly atmosphere and there is plenty to do at the track for kids of all ages. Besides the races themselves, kids and families can visit the Sprint Fan Walk, an interactive area within Kansas Speedway's infield near the garages that the teams use. Fans can watch as inspectors look over the cars and the crews get the cars ready for the race. Kids and parents may also hang out in Autograph Alley to try to get their favorite driver's autograph or watch award presentations from the main stage. (Tickets to Fan Walk are $15).

get more!

But it’s going to be too loud/hot! Yes, it’s going to be loud. But by being prepared and taking advantage of some of the options at the track, it is manageable for kids. Local race fan Tina Leitzel says, “Ear protection is an absolute must. You can purchase simple ear plugs, but my nephews loved sharing the scanner [available for rent at the Speedway] with me. The headsets not only provide them with some entertainment trying to listen to their favorite driver, but they also help calm the noise. Parents can also rent headsets just for ear protection, without the scanners.” Tina also recommends being prepared for heat and sun by bringing sunscreen, wearing appropriate clothing/hats, and maybe even bringing a foam cushion or small blanket for the metal benches. However, with the major NASCAR races scheduled for April and October this year at the Kansas Speedway, the chances for mild weather are much better than for races in the middle of the summer. As with any outdoor family outing…be prepared for all types of weather. You can visit the Kansas Speedway website at www.KansasSpeedway.com for more tips for first-time fans. So get in the fast lane and spend an exhilarating day at the races with your kids this year! It is a memory they will never forget! Kansas City mom Sara Keenan is excited to attend her first NASCAR race this spring with her family.
