hen I was an elementary teacher, I loved when August rolled around and it was time to get ready for another school year. From decorating my room to planning lessons to meeting my new students, I enjoyed all parts of the back-to-school season. As a parent, it’s a bit of a different story. I can’t say I’m counting the hours until I start making lunches, overseeing completion of homework, driving carpool, washing uniforms, etc. But, I push aside my feelings and try to be upbeat and excited so that my girls will also be upbeat and excited about the upcoming school year. To help get your year off to the best start possible, we’ve put together a fantastic back-toschool guide. What would the classroom teacher or school principal say to you if she could really speak her mind? Find out in “Classroom Confidential” on pg. 34. Need a fun way to kick off your year? Check out “Back-to-School Traditions” on pg. 36. Looking for tips to help manage your after school schedule? Read “Managing After School Madness” on pg. 29. Is your baby heading off to preschool or kindergarten? Be sure to read “Easy Good-byes” on pg. 38 before your first day drop-off. Do you remember the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books from when you were young? I always enjoyed those and loved having some control over the story’s outcome. In the spirit of those books, we’ve put together a “Choose Your Own Adventure” night out—KC style! Turn to pg. 14 and get started on your family’s adventure today. Wishing all KC families a great start to the school year!

5 ways to feel better after a
bad day
The Power of Friends: Who better
to relate to your own frustrations than a good friend? Whether you pour out your feelings, have a good laugh or simply chitchat, friends can help turn a bad day around. When women are stressed, we experience a surge of oxytocin, the “bonding” hormone. When we seek solace in friends, more oxytocin is produced, which has a calming effect. Belton mom Cara says that after a rough day, “I usually sit on my back deck with a neighbor momma, drinking iced tea and chatting.”
Exercise: Ever notice how a brisk walk
or a game of tennis makes you feel better all over? Medical research proves that exercise has a positive impact on your physical and mental well-being. According to the Mayo Clinic, being active can boost your feel-good endorphins and distract you from daily worries. Darla, a Mission mom, says that she relieves the stress of a bad day by “walking with Summer Hits of the '80s (Pandora channel) cranked up on my ear buds.” Whether you hit the gym for a sweat session, swim a few laps in the pool or simply take a stroll, you are bound to feel better, mentally and physically.
Laugh: No joke—laughter can lighten your load mentally. Just like exercise, a
good chuckle releases endorphins. Whitney, a Belton mom of twin 3-year-olds, says that she tries to find something to laugh about after a bad day. “A good full-on belly laugh always makes me feel better!” I love to watch funny YouTube clips when I’m feeling down. Videos of silly dogs and crazy cats make me laugh on their own; seeing our own puppies’ reaction when they hear barking dogs or meowing cats and can’t locate the source cracks me up. So call a funny friend, pop in your favorite comedy or rely on your family to provide a few laughs. You’ll soon be saying, “What bad day?”
Alone Time: After a tough day of jug-
gling kids, work, appointments and more, do you daydream of escaping to a tropical island by yourself? Ahhh…alone time. As busy parents, it’s what we often crave but rarely get. Even a few minutes by ourselves, away from chaos, does wonders for our mental well-being. Carmen, a Belton mom of three, says that after a bad day, “I like to do something just for me....a mani/pedi, a new pair of sandals or a purse. Nothing too expensive, but it puts me in a good mood.”
Create: Busy hands are sometimes the
best stress reliever. I’m not talking about changing diapers and wiping mouths; you do that all day! Take a break to do something you enjoy but don’t often get the chance to. If you’re an artist, sketch or paint. If you love to bake, whip up your favorite dessert. If gardening is your thing, put on those gloves and dig around in the dirt. Amber, a Belton mom of two, says, “I crochet—some days more than others!” Tisha Foley loves alone time after a bad day. She and her family live in Belton.
We asked KCParent.com readers, What’s the best way to cheer up after a bad day? A relaxing bath (40%) Chatting with friends (40%) Chocolate (and lots of it -- 20%)

O
n the road again...I just can’t wait to get on the road again...” I could almost hear Willie in my head as we hopped onto 69 Highway and started our all-day drive toward Dallas. We go every summer, and yet each drive is as different as can be. This year’s seemed easier—now the kids are older and we (finally) have become the proud owners of our first minivan. So, off we went! That was just our warm-up road trip, as soon we will head to Destin, FL. This next destination requires a two-day drive (each way!) and lots more snacks, games and music! I’ve put together road trip bingo for the drive and hope this will help keep the girls occupied for at least part of our 2,000+ miles to the ocean and back! Maybe you’ve got a late summer trip planned, too. A get-out-of-town-quick trip before school starts again? Just in case, visit KCParent.com and print up the Road Trip Bingo game board I’ve put together and use on your road trip (even if it is just around town and back home!). I plan on a “blackout” game for our big trip, but you might try a more traditional version if you’re just headed to the lake, Powell Gardens or maybe Lawrence! Enjoy! Lauren Goldman is Art Director for KC Parent. She lives with her family in Overland Park. She and other moms and dads blog daily at KCParent.com. Join the conversation today!

Kansas City, Kansas City, here I come.
The center of the United States boasts the convergence of the melting pot that America is and truly offers something for everyone: world class museums, hip historic districts, delicious dining and Midwestern charm. Kansas City, there truly is no place like home, and home is where the heart of our adventure begins….

If you prefer to enjoy the scenery from choice a., the grass, then go:
Pack a picnic and sprawl out on the lawn of the NelsonAtkins Museum of Art, the largest and most prestigious art gallery west of the Mississippi. With gigantic shuttlecocks as the centerpiece of Sculpture Park, the lawn is a beautiful and magnificent place to snap photos, play Frisbee, picnic and, of course, meander inside to enjoy a marvelous art collection at the museum where admission is always free!
Central Library of the Kansas City Public Library (14 W. 10th St., Kansas City, MO), housed in the former First National Bank of Kansas City, is one of the city’s most beautiful “best-kept secrets.” The library is an architectural master-piece with reading rooms, research areas, a cafe and a rooftop view of the city skyline, complete with a giant life-size chess set! But, the best section of the library for families is the Children’s Department. Enter through the pages of a book to a place where kids will discover a wonderful reading area organized by ages and interests and offering many hands-on activities, as well.

on the nation’s financial system, and tours are free. Learn how the Federal Reserve Bank works and its role in the U.S. economy through interactive exhibits that explore banking and basic economics. Take a peek into one of the nation’s largest cash vaults, create your own monetary artwork and view coins from each U.S. presidential administration. And the museum offers one of the best free souvenirs in town: a bag of shredded cash for each guest!
If you think choice c., butterflies, is the most fascinating, then:
Your family can be transported into an amazing underwater world with up-close views of more than 5,000 sea creatures at Sea Life Kansas City (2475 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, MO, 816.471.4386, SeaLifeUS.com)! Come nose to nose with sharks in the walk-through underwater tunnel, experience the touch pool where you can hold a crab or touch a starfish, participate in educational demonstrations, watch animal feedings and explore this state-of-the-art home for many of the ocean’s most majestic creatures.

Powell Gardens’ Annual Festival of Butterflies, Aug. 2- 4 & 9-11, transforms the 2,500-square-foot conservatory into a temporary butterfly house, filled to the brim with gorgeous blooms and hundreds of tropical butterflies. Make it an annual tradition to attend the festival and enjoy a native butterfly breezeway, Monarch Watch and the Dahlia Society, kids’ crafts, a costume parade, a butterfly catch-and-release area and much more. Festival admission is $12/adults, $10/seniors and $5/children ages 5-12 and includes free parking, admission to exhibits and free trolley rides.

If you think choice c., ice cream, looks the most scrumptious, then:
Mouthwatering, juicy barbecue is the name of the game at Fiorella’s Jack Stack (JackStackBBQ.com), a Kansas City original and consistent Zagat award winner. Boasting four local restaurants, the eatery is bound to have a location convenient to you. The fare includes tangy sauce generously slathered over tender ribs, burnt ends and sliced meat. The exceptional side dishes challenge a diner to choose: baked beans, coleslaw, cream corn or, my personal favorite, the onion rings!
If you think choice b., tamales, is the most flavorful, then:
As one of Southwest Boulevard’s most notable Mexican restaurants for more than 30 years, Manny’s (MannysKC. com) has rightfully developed a loyal fan following with their generous portions and tasty burritos, tacos, enchiladas and homemade authentic Mexican tamales. What makes Manny’s stand out? The heat! They know spicy, and you can depend on their menu’s heat rating to lead you in the right direction if jalapenos are what you crave. The chic shop with a sleek modern atmosphere and robin’s egg blue walls beckons customers to sample exotic and unheard-of-before ice cream flavors. Glace Artisan Ice Cream, where the greatest challenge is narrowing down your choice, uses only pure, fresh foods and natural ingredients to create their delicious flavors—no artificial flavorings. Locally owned and operated, this Christopher Elbow ice cream shop frequently invents new flavors and shares their creation journey on the Glace Facebook page, where fans are tempted with new tantalizing ice creams. And, with Christopher Elbow chocolates as signature ingredients for many of the flavors, you simply can’t go wrong! Rosie is a very brave little dog. She’s not afraid of tigers, orangutans (at least pictures of them), baths or even the postman. She’s a brave little dog. But when thunder begins to rumble, Rosie goes scurrying for cover. She looks all over but she knows the thunder can still see her. Rosie’s boy tries his best to comfort her with singing but it does little good. She thinks he might be a little scared too. Eventually, they huddle together in his bedroom until the storm passes.
There is a lovely tone to this take with soft lyrical text that offers as much interest as the illustrations. Salerno’s illustrations evoke a vintage feel fans of Curious George will find very pleasing. Children will easily be able to see their own behavior in Rosie’s adventure and learn that facing things you fear with someone you love can make overcoming your fears a little easier.
What’s good: Gentle text and vintage-style illustrations make this a very soothing tale. What’s bad: A little simplistic. One time reading it may be enough.
The Notebook of Doom: Rise of the Balloon Goons By Troy Cummings Best for: Ages 6-8
Scholastic’s early chapter book line keeps expanding. Now children can enjoy this series, as well as “Looniverse” and “Boris on the Move.” This is an easyto-read story that doesn’t speak down to the reader but involves him in highinterest plot content. When the new kid in town, Alexander, stumbles upon the “notebook of doom,” he uncovers top secret information on
monsters—lots and lots of monsters. It’s funny and fast with enjoyable black and white illustrations. What will happen as Alexander takes on the creepy balloon goons with twisty arms? Although they are slightly creepy, these books are not as scary as “Goosebumps.” None of the tales in this series will cause nightmares, but they will cause your children to read some more.
What’s good: Energetic plots and monsters will encourage reluctant readers to ask for more. What’s bad: Children ready for chills won’t even find goose bumps here.
Confectionately Yours: Sugar and Spice
By Lisa Papademetriou Best for: Ages 10-15
This installment of “Confectionately Yours” picks up when Hayley and her family are settling into their new lives. They still miss spending time with their father, but things are getting better. Hayley still misses time with her ex-BFF, Artie, but loves spending time with her new BFF, Meghan. In this installment, the big plot event is a talent show, and it
brings Artie back into the picture. Hayley also begins to show that she may have a crush on someone. And finally, a big wedding announcement leads the way into the next book, Something New. These are well-written, non-offensive and highly enjoyable books for pre- and young teens.
What’s good: Love the cupcake recipes scattered throughout the book – can’t wait to try one out. What’s bad: The plot can move a little slowly at times.

Some early symptoms are joint soreness after periods of overuse or inactivity, stiffness after periods of rest that goes away when activity resumes or morning stiffness. Most treatment plans include exercise, weight control, physical therapy and medications.

RA is a form of inflammatory arthritis and an autoimmune disease. For some unknown reason, in RA, the body attacks and destroys its own tissues. Researchers have detected a genetic marker that may be linked to RA and have identified some bacteria or viruses that might be linked as well. RA can’t be cured but can be managed if diagnosed early. Some symptoms may be warm joints with swelling and pain, and the condition is usually found in joints on both sides of the body. Some people may feel fatigued, feverish and experience a loss of appetite. RA is usually treated with medications, along

JUVENILE ARTHRITIS
JA is a term used to describe any type of arthritis in someone under the age of 16. Generally, a child is diagnosed with this if there is swelling in a joint for at least six weeks. Sadly, the cause is unknown. Sticking to your child’s daily routine and comfortable habits is most important. Helping your child cope with chronic illness is another important aspect. Unfortunately, there is no cure, so the goal of treatment turns to managing symptoms, such as relieving inflammation, controlling pain and improving the quality of life. Most plans include physical activity, eye care and healthy eating. For more information on arthritis, visit the following websites: Arthritis. org or Arthritis.com. Sherry Chaney, from Eudora, says her teenage son has snored every night since he was 7. “He has to take allergy medicine every day,” says Sherry. And she will get him tested for sleep apnea at some point, because his father sleeps with a machine. “Loud snoring that lasts for months or years is abnormal and signals a sleep problem that could affect a child’s behavior during the day,” reports the American Academy of Pediatrics. Restlessness, difficulty focusing and, in severe cases, depression and hyperactivity can develop. Even school performance can be affected by sleep patterns caused by sleep apnea.
apnea
It is normal for everyone to have brief pauses in breathing while sleeping; but when the pauses become often and prolonged, the body doesn’t get enough oxygen, and sleep cycles are interrupted. According to Nemours Foundation, “If not treated, sleep apnea can lead to a variety of problems. These include heart, behavior, learning and growth problems.” Nemours also says that 2 percent of children have sleep apnea and many of those are undiagnosed.
symptoms
• Frequent snoring • Problems breathing during the night • Sleepiness during the day • Difficulty paying attention • Behavior problems (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2011)
treatment
If your child is experiencing chronic snoring, waking in the middle of the night gasping for air, or doesn’t seem to be rested after a full night’s sleep, have him checked out by his primary doctor. Doctors can perform a complete evaluation and diagnosis, and most apnea cases can be treated by medications, monitoring devices, sleep centers and, always as a last resort, surgery. The best thing to do is NOT ignore the “sawing of logs” and hope it goes away. It might for some, but lack of oxygenation for children is not good—so bring it up with your doctor. WAYS TO IMPROVE FAMILY TIME Summer is coming to a close. As kids head back to the classroom, our time with them will dwindle. Here are some simple ways to help improve that time together. 1. Reserve one day a week for family day. This is a great policy to have all year long. Choose the best day of the week that will work for everyone. Stay in or go out. Play games or take a hike. Either way, this is the one day of the week that everyone sticks together.

3. Do things that everyone will enjoy. There are times as parents we tend to do only what the kids would enjoy. We get relegated to pack mules and/ or tour guides. Try to find things to do that you enjoy, too. Discover the balance between what they want and what you want. I like to mix and match—like going to a farmers’ market together, then going out for ice cream after. Everyone wins, and it makes for more enjoyable family time.

WE’RE LOOKING FOR RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS Can the nutrient DHA be helpful for preschoolers’ development? Who can participate? Healthy children, within 3 months Effects of AdultofSpeech Grammar Development their 3rdon birthday who drink in Preschoolers with Language Delay cow’s milkSpecific daily.
4. Play games that don’t need electricity. Movies, video games and tablets are everywhere. And believe me—my kids are big fans of all of it (Me too!). But every now and then, the best thing we can do is to turn all of it off and grab a deck of cards. Some of our best times together are when the only noise and entertainment come from us. If you just can’t face another game of go fish or old maid, mix it up by finding rules for different card games. I suggest hate your neighbor, especially if you have older kids.
5. Cook and eat together. We have all heard the benefits kids get from a regular family meal around the dinner table. Take it a step further by choosing, buying and cooking the meal together. This will take a bit of planning. But the act of making something together and seeing the pride on your children’s faces is well worth the extra mess.

Creating a routine can help kids (and parents!) transition from school to home
T
he lazy days of summer are coming to an end, and it’s time to get kids back into the school schedule. While I often hear my friends talk about getting their kids back into a good bedtime/morning routine, I never hear anything about dealing with what I call the “witching hours”: that decompression time when your kids get home after school. While your kids are making the transition from their “public selves” after a long day of school, it’s tempting to pop them in front of the TV to decompress and relax for 30 minutes. Fortunately, there are many other options besides TV to ease the transition—and improve your own afternoon in the process!
Some tips from parents and parenting experts: Give kids some control: According to Wendy Petricoff, an Overland Park native who is now an independent Love and Logic Parenting expert in Charlotte, NC, a great way to calm the mayhem is to give your children appropriate choices. For instance: “Would you like a snack while you’re doing your homework or after?” “Would you like to play outside for 20 minutes or 30 minutes?” “Let them help you make the schedule. Their buy-in goes a long way toward easing the school-to-home transition,” Petricoff says. Stave off hunger: An after school snack—especially one with some protein to hold kids’ appetites in check until dinnertime—can make all the difference in your child’s after school attitude. Be present and enjoy the time you get to spend with them (and reap the rewards as a parent): Instead of bombarding your kids with questions about their day, opt for a big hug and a warm welcome home, says Petricoff. You can share details of your day or ask them an open-ended, no pressure “How was your day?” “When we get home, often the kids go straight from the car to the driveway or backyard to play. I don’t worry about getting myself changed out of my work
clothes or getting bags put away. I join them and then enjoy quality time with them since I haven’t seen them all day,” Karen Loggia, Leawood mother of two, says. “They get to burn off any extra energy, and I get to focus on my children.” Be mindful of their schedules: “Many kids have to work really hard to hold it together all day at school,” Petricoff says. “If your child has a hard time pulling it together for after school activities, schedule the swimming lessons on the weekend.” Get organized: In a two-income family like ours, preparation for the next day is key. My husband goes straight from work to pick up the kids after school, and things go so much better when snacks and any sports equipment are ready to grab and go. And Loggia, whose younger children need supervision while outside, keeps bottles of water handy in the garage so she and the kids can easily grab something to drink. Anything you can do to reduce “think time” makes it easier on yourself and your kids. Use these tips—and any you come up with yourself—to discover your own family’s after school rhythm and get this school year off to a great start! Jane Blumenthal Martin lives in Overland Park with her husband and two children. Read Jane’s blog for working parents at ArtOfEqualParenting.com.
Tips from Dad Don’t forget the chores, even when kids are busy after school. My husband, who grew up with tons of chores on his parents’ Kansas farm, uses chores to help set the routine. Every day, each child has a certain number of duties to take care of before playtime. Divide & Conquer In our house, my husband prepares most of our weekday dinners. In return, I plan the daily menu, go grocery shopping and make sure he has what he needs each evening when dinner rolls around. Loggia and her husband, who also embrace a team approach to parenting, make evening meal prep a team effort. One of them gets dinner ready while the other spends time with the kids. It’s a win-win, as each parent gets quality time with the kids.

10 TIPS TO
THE SCHOOL YEAR
1.
Use strategies at home to reinforce what is being taught at school. Some possibilities are flash cards, review notes and practice word games. “Flash cards worked really well for me. I could take vocabulary words or notes and make the cards,” says 2013 Liberty High School graduate Alix Messer. “Reviewing them at night helped me feel more confident for the test.” Remember also that what works for one student doesn’t necessarily work for another. Try different strategies until you discover the one that works best.
2.
Being involved—but not too involved— is important for middle school and high school students. Join a club to get to know people and build a connection to the school. Sports are also a good way to do this once they become available. Be careful not to overextend, however.
3.
Getting eight hours of sleep a night is essential, regardless of age. “I never feel my best when I don’t get much sleep. Proper rest is vital to doing your best in school,” Messer says. Setting a time for phones and iPods to be turned off will help with an earlier bedtime and can help make the morning routine easier.
It’s August—summer is almost over, and it’s time for school again. Whether your little one is starting kindergarten, or your big one is starting the senior year of high school, the beginning of the school year can be stressful. Here are 10 ways to rock the school year.
30
kcparent.com august 2013
4.
Advocate for your student when needed. Go through your child’s backpack and really read what comes home from school. If something is confusing, ask for clarification. “Share information with your kid’s teacher.
5.
Staying organized from the beginning of the year is another way to create success. Find a system that works and stick with it. Binders for every class, a planner to write down assignments and a central location for school papers at home will help. “Have a home schedule/system to balance school, home and extracurricular activities, and this will help all feel calmer and more prepared for school,” Stephanie Ritter, Kearney mother of two, says.
6.
Teach independence and responsibility. It’s going to be a long school year if the kids don’t learn to do some things by themselves. “Help your child but don’t do it for them,” Ritter says. Set up a homework station and be nearby while they are working, but don’t fall into the easy trap of doing things for them.
7.
Work hard. Play hard. Encourage your kids to be serious about school and set aside time and space for schoolwork. “But remember that kids need brain breaks. Unstructured play is important!” Beth Dusin, Liberty mother of two, says. “Allow your kids time to be bored and figure out stuff to do.”
8.
Document the year. They will only be this age once, so make sure to get plenty of pictures, keep mementos, certificates, etc. You will appreciate it when they are older!
10.
9.
Build strong relationships at school. Be sure to attend all back-to-school events. “Volunteer at school. Whether you have one afternoon or a day every week to give, your presence says school is important,” Dusin says. Make time to meet your child’s teachers and stay in contact with them.
Breakfast is the meal that fuels for the school day, so make sure kids eat a decent breakfast—that way they can focus on learning rather than a growling stomach. Keep staples on hand, like frozen whole grain waffles, bagels, cereal, oatmeal, muffins, fruit or yogurt, that are easy to grab and go in a hurry.

dvancements in mobile technology and the rise of tablet usage have revolutionized the way that students learn, connect in the classroom and complete assignments. Long gone are the days of worksheet stacks and laborious hours spent drafting the perfect paper by pen. Now, even elementary school students are seen tapping and swiping their way through the school year. While many schools still prefer or rely on the time-tested traditional methods of teaching, if tech-adoption trends are any indication of where things are headed, the current generation of students will spend significantly more time using tablets than their predecessors. This means, with so many online options to choose from, parents should take an active role in guiding their children to the best educational resources. I Can’t Wait for School
“D
ad, I’m bored,” James said. “Yeah, there’s nothing to do,” Ian said. “Why don’t you go outside and play?” I said to them. They gave me a look like I was hopelessly out of touch with reality and draped themselves on the living room furniture like damp towels. “You know that school starts next week. You should go out while you still can.” They didn’t say it, but I could hear it. They wanted school. They missed their friends and the idea of feeding their minds with the same voracious appetite they fed their teenage mouths. “I have a wonderful idea!” I said, full of imitation glee. “Why don’t you go clean up your room?” They groaned in unison, but I had a plan. “After Mom wakes up, we’re going to get your back-to-school supplies and we need a place to put the new stuff. You guys are getting big enough for your own desks, too. If we don’t have room to put them in your rooms…” I left the sentence unfinished, but the meaning came through, crystal clear. James and Ian rose from the furniture. Too old and cool to show enthusiasm, they still went quickly to their rooms. I tiptoed through their rooms that night while they slept. Larger clothes hung in the closet, unblemished shoes lay at the foot of their beds and pristine backpacks dangled across unfamiliar chairs. The new desks took up floor space that used to be covered with toys, another sign of impending maturity. Fresh school supplies and stacks of snow-white paper, neatly arranged on top of them, showed their excitement. I knew this feeling wouldn’t last, maybe not even past their first full day. But, on these last days of summer vacation, they couldn’t wait to go back to school. William R. Bartlett lives in Belton with his family.

It’s Joe Fox e-mailing Kathleen Kelly in the classic chick flick, You’ve Got Mail. This line always transports me to the first days of school as students proudly unload their fresh new supplies and sharpen their shiny #2 pencils for the first time. They are eager to put them to use with whatever task their mysterious new teacher will assign them. It’s a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. back-to-school traditions it’s back-to-school, kc!
Summer’s end brings big changes, and traditions are a fun way to ease the transition back to school. Here are a few of our favorites.
backpack fairy:
The littlest learners love it when the Backpack Fairy pays a visit. She arrives via the flying magic school bus in the middle of the night, filling backpacks left open by the front door with little trinkets (pencil grips and erasers, lip gloss, sunglasses, tickets redeemable for the Kansas City Zoo or a Deanna Rose outing). Her colorful notes, shrouded in a dusting of magical glitter, always assure kids that she has paired them with the perfect teacher for their advancing careers and that they have all the skills they need to carry them into a challenging new year.
smarty pants:
Stuff your kids’ pockets with Smarties candies and an encouraging note for a special “smarty pants” surprise. Or, scatter Smarties around the kids’ rooms to make them extra “smart” and as a sweet incentive to wake up early.
count down:
A week or two before school begins, fill a jar with cookies or create a paper chain to count down the last days of summer.
smart cookies: Welcome your smart
cookies home from the first day with the same special treat every year. These chocolate no-bakes come highly recommended:
36
kcparent.com august 2013
no-bake “smart cookies”
1 stick butter, melted (do not substitute margarine) 2 c. sugar ½ c. cocoa ½ c. milk 1 t. vanilla 1 c. peanut butter 2-3 c. oatmeal
Capturing a child’s first day of school in a creative way is as easy as the snap of the camera with the School Days Pics `N’ Props kit from Hallmark. The all-in-one memory kit gives parents the tools to document and remember this yearly milestone in a fun, crafty, yet easy way!
first day photo shoot:
In the soft, sun-speckled light of morning, it’s time to snap those forgetme-not first day photos. Don’t miss these fun photo ops and props: • Cut out huge poster board numbers of your child’s new grade level. • Decorate the rim of a chalkboard with apples and have your child write his grade level, signature and what he wants to be when he grows up. • Snap a photo of your kids from behind, showing off their back- packs and spindly little legs sprouting from beneath.

pop the pretense:
The night before school begins provides a perfect opportunity to talk with kids about friendships. Use this balloonpopping lesson to open up a dialogue about meeting new classmates. On small slips of paper, write 3-5 descriptions of what pretend classmates appear to be like on the outside, and accompanying descriptions of what is actually going on inside them. Stuff each “classmate” balloon with the description of the person from the “inside,” fill the balloons with air, then draw faces on them with permanent marker. Leave the “outside” descriptions next to each balloon. Have your kids read the “outside” descriptions, asking them what they think about each person. Next, pop the balloon and find out what the person is really like on the inside, asking more questions and discussing how this changes their initial impression. For example: Outside: Junie is a shy girl who doesn’t have a lot of friends. Sometimes, because she’s so quiet, people think Junie is rude. Junie doesn’t have anyone to play with at recess, and nobody picks her to be on the team in gym class.
last supper of summer:
Plan a special meal—a picnic, backyard barbecue or dinner at your family’s favorite restaurant—the night before school begins. Bring along some board games or, if you’re outdoors, a pitcher of giant bubbles (mix together 1 gal. warm water, 1 c. Joy Ultra dish soap and 1/3 c. glycerin).
Mix the first four ingredients; heat to a boil for one minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add vanilla and peanut butter; mix until peanut butter melts. Add oatmeal. As the mixture thickens slightly, place spoonfuls on wax paper and cool.
Inside: Sometimes, Junie feels invisible. Junie would love to have a friend to play with; it just takes time for her to warm up to people. Once Junie opens up, though, she is the most loyal friend anyone could have. She may seem rude because she’s quiet, but Junie actually cares a lot about other people. She just doesn’t always know how to tell them. Wendy Connelly lives in Overland Park. Her kids highly anticipate the beloved Backpack Fairy’s visit on the eve before school each year. kcparent.com august 2013

I
t’s the first day of school for your little one and time to prepare for that first big drop-off and good-bye! Maybe it’s the first day at daycare, preschool or even kindergarten, and wherever it is, for you and your little one it is a big transition. There are feelings of joy at this new stage and, at the same time, anxiety around the idea of his leaving your side. You worry: Did I prepare him enough? Will he be lonely? Will the other kids like him? Will he be given love and attention? While these questions may plague you, you can take some steps for a successful transition. Tamara Sandage, principal of the Early Childhood Center in the Center School District, has seen her fair share of drop-offs. “Most kids are ready and confident at that first drop-off. I see many parents who are surprised at how well their child handles it and kind of sad that their child is so willing and happy to go, while at the same time they are proud of that confidence in their child,” Sandage says. While many kids do handle transitions well naturally, not all do. Some parents may need to take steps to encourage a healthier drop-off. “Establishing a routine that is conducive to their new transition a week or so before the actual first day can help to establish success,” Sandage says. “Make sure there is consistency in bedtime to encourage happier wake-ups. This will make happier children and parents.” Sandage also encourages participation in activities that schools or facilities of-
fer prior to those big first days: tours, meet teacher days or back-to-school nights. These events also allow families to meet educators and other families and begin to build supportive bonds. These can turn into friendships that will make those first days less stressful. It’s also important to take time to talk with your child about what to expect and what he is excited about in his new school. For the day of the first drop-off, Sandage cautions against sticking around too long. “Lingering can make it worse,” she says. “After hugs, ‘love you’s’ and ‘good-bye,’ it’s best to go and let the people you have entrusted with your child take over. By leaving, you show your child that you have trust and confidence in the people in whose care you have left him, and this, in turn, allows your child to have that confidence.” The first drop-off is a milestone in your and your child’s lives. Have open conversations about what to expect and be present in your own feelings and emotions. “Be who you are as a parent. It’s an emotional time. Be genuine. Be excited for them and let them know you can’t wait to hear about their day!” says Sandage. In taking these steps, you can be confident in that first big drop-off, even if you are teary eyed. Karah Chapman is a school psychologist in the Kansas City area. She believes that a little confidence can make a child blossom.

peach picking in kc Before the kids head back to school and the air turns crisp for autumn, take the family to one of these great orchards for some peach picking and family time. Several of these farms also offer berry picking, cherry picking and apple picking, as well! Call for information and seasons. Peach Picking Season: Mid-late July through August or September (varies with each orchard).
Kansas City Area Peach Orchards
Peach Picking Tips: Call the farm for a picking report before you head out. Many of the farms are small and have limited fruit availability. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Bring bottled water and snacks for the kids.
Gieringers Orchard: Located in Johnson County, this family-owned farm has peaches and blackberries. They boast several varieties of freestone peaches. 913.893.9626, 39675 W. 183rd St, Edgerton, KS, GieringersOrchard.com
316.282.2325, 7620 S. Anderson Rd., Newton, KS, BecksFarm.com
Alldredge Orchards: Tucked in the foothills of the Missouri River you’ll find the picturesque Alldredge Orchards. Call 816.330.3448 for information. 10455 Hwy. N, Platte City, MO, AlldredgeOrchards.com
Schweizer Orchards: Nestled in the bluffs overlooking the Mighty Mo is one of the largest u-pick orchards in the area. 816.232.3999, S. Hwy. 169 & FF St., Joseph, MO, SchweizerOrchards.com
Beck’s Farm: Home to the “two-napkin” peach, the orchard has more than 5,000 peach trees bearing 43 varieties of upick fruit. Discover the fun and a variety of choices for fresh healthy produce.
Wagon Wheel Orchard: The Wagon Wheel Orchard offers hayrack rides and live animals, along with u-pick fruit. 913.893.6050, 15380 Edgerton Rd., Gardner, KS, WagonWheelOrchard.com
Don’t forget your camera… fruit picking makes great photos for the scrapbook. How to Pick Peaches: Twist gently and lift up—do not pull down on the fruit or you will damage both the fruit and the tree.
