An American brand focusing on women’s wear beauty creates new fashion trends in traditional couture with international elements. Fashion has the ability to transcend global boundaries. Utilizing both Eastern and Western influences, Vanni Wang of Lucio Vanni Couture has done just that. From her impeccable lace detailing and modern laser-cut necklines on elegant suits and dresses to the intricate organza blouses paired with leather leggings, she demonstrates that couture style is not only versatile, but so is the meaning behind it. And, with that in mind, Lucio Vanni was born. Wang began her career in Southeast China by bringing Western fashion to the East in the form of bellbottom jeans. By the age of 18, she began to teach students sewing and manufacturing, and, within a few short years, constructed one of the largest manufacturing facilities of high fashion in China. Her clients included the fashion houses of Chanel, BCBG, DKNY, and many others. After 25 years in the fashion industry of China, Wang moved to the United States with her family to continue her love of design. The idea behind Wang’s designs comes from her belief that women need to find a style that makes them stand out as an individual, no matter where they are in

10

world. With her skills and abilities, Wang transforms simple designs into works of art for any woman of any culture. European fashion houses have long been creating the most coveted haute couture designs. Wang promises to bring that same luxury and detail to her American label, while keeping traditional silhouettes that bring haute couture to a new…well, haute. Her designs are created for the ever fashion forward and always style conscious woman on the go. In today’s world, women are doing everything from running households to multi-million dollar companies and they deserve to treat themselves to luxury. With the busy modern life, however, Wang has found that many women forget to take care of themselves and neglect the need to feel beautiful. No matter if you are running errands at the store or spending an evening out with your husband, the perfect dress never goes unnoticed. Lucio Vanni has set its goals to serve its customers with the luxurious beauty experience they deserve with the cutting edge trends that set them apart. Combining classic Western style with the exquisite details of Eastern Asian design, Wang brings a new

elegance and couture to her clients here in the United States. Wang uses only the finest materials from Asia and Europe in her garments. As Wang creates each piece by hand, she has a talent for juxtaposing materials and patterns to find the exact match, whether it’s a solid silk and a bright lace or an intricately patterned silk dress and leather belt. This passion for the best materials can be seen in her cosmetic line as well, aptly named Lucio Vanni Cosmetics. From skin revitalizing serum to anti-aging night creams, Lucio Vanni Cosmetics are made of all organic French ingredients, including lavender and chamomile. Much like the luxurious Lucio Vanni Couture designs, Lucio Vanni Cosmetics leaves the user feeling refreshed and radiant, with the confidence that only the most creative and unique couture garment can do. Wang strives to make every woman feel beautiful and on trend from façade to foot, and everywhere in between. Lucio Vanni operates out of Rocky River, OH. All of Lucio Vanni Couture collections and Vanni Wang ready-to-wear and footwear collections can be found at the parent website www.luciovanni.com or at select specialty boutiques. Nayeli’s Modeling Points By: Joyce “JLynn” Gonzalez In the competitive world of modeling, it is a quintessential fact to discover one’s niche in order to perfect one’s craft as a professional model. With so many beautiful people in the industry, models must capitalize and develop their signature look in finding ways to set themselves apart from all the beautiful faces--who epitomize sheer perfection. And, that is exactly what Nayeli Ponce has done at the onstart of her modeling career. With her exotic looks complimented by her many talents, having been professionally trained as a ballerina dancer, Nayeli struts one of the fiercest, yet graceful, catwalks in the realm of fashion. Walking on her points and tiptoeing down the runway with her ballet shoes, Nayeli has had the opportunity to participate as well as open several fashion shows within southern California--including 2010’s LA Fashion Week. In avidly pursuing her career, one of her key philosophies regarding the modeling and entertainment industry is her belief and value of recognizing one’s vulnerabilities as well as one’s attributes.”Once you identify your strengths and weaknesses, you learn to strengthen those weaknesses and accept yourself with confidence and make your strengths shine,” she emphasized with such perseverance. “If you have true passion for something, dedication is not difficult---it’s the patience that is challenging to have. This is why I work towards [my profession] with a rational approach......of focus, persistence, and optimism.” Having this unrivaled commitment of perfecting her abilities, Nayeli knew her pathway would be following a career to showcase her artistic talents. By the time she was three years old, she was already exposed to the arts and approximately 11 years ago, she attended her first Mexican cotillion that led to enrolling in various model-

16

ing schools in Mexico. This helped her further advance with her career, becoming Assistant Director at John Robert Powers; and holding the position of Creative Director and Lead Instructor at Blew Print Modeling Studios; both modeling schools based in San Diego. As she began personally coaching and teaching, it was apparent that with all her professional experience that she would find a love for coaching and educating models with the significance of personal development. By assisting other aspiring models, teaching them the importance of proper etiquette in presenting themselves towards industry professionals, Nayeli has always felt a sense of purpose in helping others advance in their careers. Though, she continuously sees herself as a work in progress with her own career in the arena of modeling and acting, she is always willing to impart her own knowledge through her own personal journey. “You must have the right way to prevail in your endeavors. It may take trials and errors to find this way....but if you apply the tools I give you, [I can provide guidance in helping you create and develop] what you want to be in life.” Currently, Nayeli is working towards advancing in her modeling and acting career, always seeking out opportunities to expand her skill set with the intent of acquiring the proper exposure for her own personal brand. In acting, she has been featured in one independent film titled,”Ten Days,” written and directed by Daniel Gonzalez, where she held the lead supporting role. She has also done a series of three short independent films; one holding the leading female role titled, “Three Less Thank You Cards,” directed by Jake Byrd and Jon Medel in an international film competition known as the 48 Hr Film Project which was awarded 3rd Place

Another short film Nayeli held was a leading role in a film titled, “Tristen & Isolde,” rected by Ana Potts, receiving 2nd Place at the Silver Reel at the MCA- International Festival. Currently, she is workxt short film, written and directed by Michael Spath, where she will possess another main leading role to add to her accomplishments.

ntinues with her desire to create and find ways to progressively grow within her career, she has also had the opportunity produce various fashion shows such as “Motion to Strike a Pose,” an event benefitting the organization “LULAC,” The ited Latin American Citizens. This particular ensemble was a fundraiser put together by Law Professor K.J. Green, and ashion show to commemorate the newly remodeled Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, showcasing Project on designer contestants, Goga by Gordana and Jesus Estrada.

Nayeli’s diverse and artistic projects, and when asked to differentiate between the world of modeling with the world imply states, “The true world of modeling is the [mere] art of [beauty, and being able to enhance that beauty and profit trast, ] the true world of acting is knowing how to entertain and captivate an audience through a characterization [of market a movie to tell its story.”

about this bubbly blonde. Within moments of our arrival; we see we are already behind; a young woman sitting at a table donning a pair of classic Prada sunglasses raises her hand in an elegant waive, we’ve found our target for the day. Scarlett is way ahead of us, not only is she excruciatingly punctual, but has already ordered a Perrier, and looks relaxed and ready to go. As elegant as she looks sitting there, immediately we realize why people fall in love with her both on and off screen. “I’m so excited!” she exclaims and jumps up to give us a big hug. Once she gets up we realize of course this girl is not just an actress but also a model, at 5’11” she towers over our small frames of 5’1” and 5’3”, respectively. Oh and she’s not shy about her height either, she’s in 5” scarlet red Pierre Cardin heels, a lucky find from department store ‘Ka De We’ in her home town of Berlin, Germany she reveals. As we order lunch (Ensalada Mista and Bruschetta Funghi for Scarlett) we learn a lot about the young entreprenuer, though she is reluctant to reveal too much about her personal life. Luckily we did our research and catch her off guard with our first question. Keel Magazine: So, Royalty huh? Scarlett Bruns: Say what? (she laughs covering her mouth) KM: We did a little research and found out that you’re the direct descendant of a Baron. So shall we call you “the right honorable Baroness” Scarlett? And do you have your coronet? Scarlett Bruns is one of Canada’s rising stars and projected to be the next “big thing” to come out of Canada. With a multitude of credits under her belt in acting, producing, writing and casting this German-Canadian actress, model and entrepreneur is among the top 5000 most prominent actors/celebrities in the world (according to IMDb.com from a list of over 4 million actresses). We’re sitting at a quaint cafe in Downtown Vancouver, and from the moment we arrived we knew there was something unique

28

Scarlett ducks her head and blushes. SB: Oh gosh, where did you hear that? Nobody knows about that! Well obviously somebody does otherwise how would we have found out? SB: It’s nothing really, I didn’t even know until I was 10 or so, and my family doesn’t have any cool heirlooms or anything. The

only thing we have a is a shield with our family crest and family motto on it. Further research into Scarlett’s uncles autobiography (he’s a scholar and author of multiple books) leads us to the family motto “Ehre sei mein Leitgedanke” loosley translated to “May honour be always in my thoughts”. Entriguing, we notice she sneakily avoided our coronet question, perhaps there is an heirloom or two...As our interview continues we give Scarlett a heads up that we want the full story, we’re going for a mini biography here. We discover that Scarlett’s acting career started on a family vacation in Austria at a resort called “Robinsonclub” at the tender age of 3. SB: My family went there to learn how to ski. The resort had a kids club and the kids were introduced to musicals, learned songs and dances and got to put on a fully produced show for the parents at the end of the vacation. Scarlett was selected to play the little mouse Speedy Gonzalez in the play of the same name. Scarlett was officially bitten by the acting bug and Speedy was her first theatre role of the 40+ she has played in her career (that’s over 2 plays a year since she started acting!) Scarlett continued to pursue acting and quickly found that she was a natural, she performed in many productions

in Germany, though she claims it didn’t seem like she had a unique childhood in that regard. Acting was as natural to Scarlett as playing and for a such creative child it was second nature. Surely Scarlett was influenced by her parents, her father was a extremely successful and well known DJ in Berlin and her mother is an accomplished photographer. After immigrating with her family to Vancouver, Canada Scarlett’s passion extended to working behind the scenes. In early years she was often found spending time with the crew of her films and plays instead of in her trailer or dressing room. This passion took a turn for the professional as 13 year old Scarlett bought a hand held camcorder with her allowance and decided she wanted to start her own production company, and so Bruns Family Productions was born. In later years Bruns Family Productions would become an official production company producing the independent feature “Heart of Dance”. Despite having an astounding amount of acting credits under her belt Scarlett had yet to play a lead role in a film. The opportunity came when Scarlett was 15 years old. She accompanied a childhood friend to an audition for ‘moral support’. At the audition the producers asked her if she’d be interested in reading for the role. Scarlett being a go getter agreed, when she was offered the opportunity to come back later that day after reviewing the lines Scarlett replied “can’t I just do it now?”. She haden’t even read the script, but the producers said, why don’t you take 10 minutes and then you can read for the part. 15 minutes later Scarlett emerged from the audi-

By: Joyce “JLynn” Gonzalez The personalized brand of Marcus Hanish is a Fashion Powerhouse in itself that encompasses all facets of the fashion industry; from being a professional hair and makeup stylist with Salon de Marcus; to having his own chic and affordable woman’s dress shop known as Boutique de Marcus; and to designing his own couture evening wear and line of clothing noted as de Marcus Collection . If that isn’t enough to describe his many creative talents, Marcus is also about to launch his own collection of signature dress shirts created & imported in Paris and made from 100% Egyptian cotton. This fashion extraordinairre does it all with his immense great eye for fashion and taste, always looking for interesting and unique styles for his boutique and clientele. His vision to have his salon in a shared space with his boutique makes your experience with his personal brand of de Marcus, a fantastic movement and fashion-forward approach in achieving overall beauty, where individuals will receive ultimate pampering with his salon. His staff will cater to your every need, and a personal stylist can help you select the most current trends for whatever occasion you will be attending. So, whether you’re wanting to paint the town red or attend your next cocktail soiree, you will definitely receive a one-of-a-kind experience of pampering and indulgence in creating that overall look to be everyone’s fashionable envy. And, of course, why wouldn’t you? Because, with de Marcus Collection, his inspiration is to design garments of clothing that brings back that old Hollywood Glamour. “My motivation for [my couture style] of gowns is old Hollywood glam meets today’s sleek and sexy,” Hanish described with much passion when asked about his niche of clothing. In his boutique and with his own designs, you will find old vintage pieces from the 60s and 70s made to enhance the female body and tailored to his clients personalized needs. A lot of his couture gowns are made and worn for special occasions, theatre events, and Hollywood premiere red carpet. So, which is relatable since many of his fashion mentors he draws inspiration from are icons such as Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford, Badgley Mischka, and Chanel.

30

Marcus Hanish His strong flare for fashion started at a very young age when Marcus watched and observed his mom and sisters make clothing for other family members. Eventually, this led him to simultaneously pursue his education in fashion at Mesa College Fashion Design and hair at Je’ Boutique College and School of Beauty; both professional schools based in San Diego. He decided to first pursue hair as a profession to establish a more stable means of income and clientele, while developing a presence of his personal brand. After finishing his schooling, he became Team Director and Master Stylist at the prestigious Robert Cromeans Salon; and also held this same position as well as acquiring the title of Platform Artist for Men’s Hair, while also being the Creator of the T3 Experience when working at the renowned Paul Mitchell Salon. With Marcus’s direction, this T3 Experi-

ence was an innovative salon treatment of massaging and moisturizing the scalp and was introduced as an added service to doing one’s hair that has progressively taken off in the salon industry. Along with his specialized and upscale clientele, he also allots his services at Prive’ Salon in Los Angeles and New York; where he is recognized as an International Educator. So, as Marcus began creating a name for himself, it wasn’t long for him to implement his clothing and fashion, establishing his boutique of clothing and own fashion designs. Coming full circle to his childhood being

Photographer: Edward A. Brown introduced to dressmaking watching his mom and sisters sew clothing, his own line of clothing with de Marcus Collection was initially prompted 12 years ago by creating a wedding dress for a family member that led to making formal gowns for other family members and their special events. Creating his own line of clothing was the final piece in developing Marcus’s Personal Brand with the intent to be placed in specialty boutiques and major department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus as well as participate in Austin’s Fashion Week. So, all the fashion devotees, wanting to add some glamour back into their lives take note of fashion mogul, Marcus Hanish who views a talented fashion designer to be, “Someone who is raw and original and not afraid to explore, expand, and go outside the box, [and knowing how to be] artsy and influenced by all surroundings.” To read more about Marcus Hanish and his latest fashions, you could log onto:

tion room. When asked how it went she said “I think it was ok”. Less than 2 hours after her audition Scarlett received the news that she had booked the lead role in “Dreaming in Technicolor”. After this roles came quickly and Scarlett had found her niche. At age 16 filming slowed down significantly for Scarlett and she took up a new hobby: Ballet. After only 4 months of classes Scarlett was put on pointe and started dancing in a semi professional youth dance company training 20+ hours per week. During this time Scarlett went back to her theatre roots and became a member of the North Vancouver Community Players. Scarlett’s career as a plus size model was launched when photographer Trish Lee contacted her after seeing her appearance in the film ”Killer Instinct”. To date Scarlett has worked 13 runway shows and 36 print campaigns as a model. Most notably Scarlett appeared in a Dove campaign and in a BC Cancer Agency print advertisement. Scarlett has walked in numerous runway shows that promote healthy body image and do not hire models with a BMI under 20, which Scarlett hopes is a policy that will be adopted by designers worldwide over the next few years. Scarlett has also modeled in many print campaigns that promote real beauty and and health in women. After recovering from a prolonged illness in 2007 Scarlett wanted to ‘give back’ to her community. True to her conviction Scarlett Bruns is involved with the following charities on a regular, and continuing basis: Make a Wish Foundation, BC Children’s Hospital, Starlight Foundation, Looking Glass Foundation for Eating Disorders, Empty Stocking Fund, Big Brothers, Rick Hansen, Paws for a Cause, City of Hope, North Shore Hospice, World Vision and BC Cancer Agency. During this illness Scarlett wrote the feature length script “Heart of Dance”. The film tells the story of teen Kealy Charmichael, who tries to fulfill her sister Anna’s dream of becoming a professional dancer in spite of a tragic family accident. During the film, Kealy struggles with an eating disorder, a topic that Bruns says is important to address. Bruns’ younger sister who models is also a driving force of inspiration for Scarlett as she is close to 6 feet weighing in at 110lbs and wears a size 2 and is constantly being told she needs to drop an inch to be successful as a model. SB: “The expectations of young girls today are not only to be perfect, they are to attain a perfection beyond what is currently considered perfect. No matter how thin or gorgeous you are in this industry you always strive for more. It’s one thing to be voted the most beautiful or sexiest, and another completely to stay in that spot and maintain that image and popularity”. Scarlett plans to donate 30% profits to Looking Glass Foundation for Eating Disorders (www.lookingglassbc. com) in memory of a friend that passed away due to heart failure caused by an eating disorder. “Instead of just donating to a charity, this will actually raise public awareness,” she tell us. “You can get a hundred people to donate $1,000 each, but that doesn’t encourage other people to do it, which is what I hope “Heart of Dance” will do, not only for this cause but for any cause that matters to them and their community.” Terence Winkless (“Twice as Dead”, Disney Channel’s “White Wolves 2: Legends of the Wild”, TV’s “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers”) is set to direct. “Everyone in the cast and crew is so committed to this film,” she continues “Some have agreed to work for no pay just to make sure we get this film made. Some have family members struggling with the disease. It makes their performances so poignant.”

“Heart Of Dance” has attracted plenty of Canadian talent. Laura Vandervoort (Smallville, V), Avan Jogia (Nickelodeon’s Victorious), Brett Dier (Mr. Young, LA Complex), Blu Mankuma (2012), Chris Potter (Heartland) Julia Stone (The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mom), and “So You

44

Think You Can Dance Canada” winner Tara-Jean Popowich are among the many talented actors set to play the lead roles along side Scarlett in “Heart of Dance”. Robyn and Ryleigh, two up and coming musical artists based out of Langley, BC are also involved in the project. “We’re very excited to have Robyn and Ryleigh create original music for the film,” says Bruns. “So many people are coming forward and wanting to be part of this project,” she continues. Bruns is also putting together PSA’s to run at the end of the movie featuring Canadian celebrities. “This film is going to make a difference in people’s lives,” she says, “plus, it’s a really good story.” Scarlett also mentions that she is dedicated to keeping the cast and crew all-Canadian and to film in Vancouver, BC in order to bring more productions to BC and to support her local film industry. Scarlett’s 24th birthday is fast approaching so we ask her, if she could have one gift that was for her, not something like world peace or to end suffering, which seems like an answer this young role model might throw at us. SB: Funding for “Heart of Dance” so that we can make the film and spread the message behind it. Ok she’s sneaky, it’s technically for her but also benefits about 200 other people who are working on the film and of course the millions of young adults around the world that could use a role models as confident, positive and inspiring as Scarlett. Scarlett has been plenty busy aside from “Heart of Dance”, in 2012 alone she has worked on the feature films “Stockholders”, “The Cover Up”, “Best of Luck” and “12 Disasters of Christmas”, the independent films “To Save One’s Self”, “Citizen”, “Criminology”, “A Life of Crime” and “The Heist”. She will also appear in the German speaking TV show “Ahorn” airing on OMNI BC, “Tulip” which airs on Shaw, and the series “ACE Insider” (commenced filming this past June). Scarlett was featured on the May cover of FutuReale Magazine, and has a 3 page spread in All Lights Film Magazine (Cannes Edition) and attended the “Leo Awards” in Vancouver, BC Canada. As we get to the end of our interview we have one very pressing question left. KM: You’re life seems intense and very busy, is there a special someone that you’re sharing it all with? Scarlett blushes but doesn’t say anything, as we prompt her again the only answer we get out of her is “Yeah, sort of, it’s a long story”. Judging by the grin that is on her face for the rest of our interview we’re sure we’ve hit that jackpot, this girl is seriously in love. With the amount of press she’s had in 2012 alone we’re sure we’ll find out sooner or later who the lucky mystery man is. KM: Ok, we get it, the BF thing is off limits. One last question. You’ve been a busy girl this year, what’s coming up next for you? SB: Who knows, only time will tell. Another sly answer. With that big grin on her face and the mysterious glint in her eye, we have no doubt that she already know’s whats next but isn’t allowed to say anything about the project yet. What ever it is, it’s bound to be big 

Kamni Syed

BEHIND THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE by KELLI PEOPLES Kamni Syed possesses the seductive looks and comehither charm to make it as a model. However she actually works on fashion’s front-lines, behind the scenes and away from the fanfare and praise, as a celebrity make-up artist, creative stylist and beauty therapist in London. Yet be not mistaken Kamni Syed is a soldier of glamorous fortune, armed with her brushes and kohl and flatirons, she is always prepared to go to the extreme ends of imagination and creativity. With more than a decade of experience in London’s fashion industry she has seen a little bit of everything and she is one of its unsung heroines. But you will never hear her complain. After all, what she does is for the greater glory of creating the Beautiful People. “I am an artist first and foremost,” Kamni says. “I have always been into painting and sculpting especially.” Just flipping through her portfolio gives the solid impression of a fearless artist who is unafraid of color, who is bold and original. Kamni’s talents are as multi-layered as her background. Raised in Saudi Arabia to Indian parents who

56

are both poets and teachers, her entrancing skills are hallmarks of the East, of cultures steeped in the Art of Beauty for millennia. Long before some of Kamni’s favorite products were ever invented (Dior, Dermalogica, YSL, Loreal, Nass) India and Egypt deemed it de rigeur to style the eyes and lips, two features that figure prominently in Kamni’s dramatic and expressive styling. “I love eyes. In Saudi culture eyes are considered very important. They are the windows to the soul indeed. So I use kohl often in my work,” she relates. One discovers that in Saudi culture women’s fashion is in fact extremely important. While black abayas are the required clothing for women outside their private homes, inside the home Saudi women have access and freedom to wear Western fashions. As Kamni discusses her inspirations you learn about the woman and about elements of the dual cultures in the East and West that define her. Her social context is tempered with vivid family memories of her poet father and her mother, a noted beauty who has been

a significant influence on Kamni as an artist and as a woman. “My mother was known for her beautiful hair. And she was very daring with cosmetics. She always preferred bright scarlet on her lips and khol for her eyes. I think that her adventurousness is what often inspires me to push the envelope when I am working,” Kamni explains. “I have used a lot of my ideas of eastern heritage in my work and my art.” she says. “I love to experiment with colours and ideas of dress. And I combine and mix a lot of vintage ideas from the fifties, sixties and the seventies.” Though her sense of inspiration and creativity is unfailing, Kamni does not rely solely upon her intuition. Educated and trained in Switzerland by Lydia Daïnow and at London’s Dermalogica , she is diligent in keeping up with the newest trends in the beauty industry. She maintains her certification as a skin therapist through continuous study at Dermalogica in order to stay qualified by their rigorous standards. Kamni admits that part of her job involves elements of psychology. “I have learned an immense amount about human nature in my profession. I have been into holistic treatments for years as a skin therapist, so my life revolves around healing people.” And her clientele is varied, not merely limited to the exciting figures of the fashion world. Her work as a skin therapist often brings her into contact with members of Parliament. But she derives a particular satisfaction and pleasure when she is able to use her skills to help individuals with disabilities. “I have very strong energies and always get great feedback. Part of my job is to make people feel better about themselves and that does involve a kind of healing energy,” Kamni says. When you sit in Kamni Syed’s chair

57

you have placed yourself in the hands of a master of the game. The final results of her beauty treatments are startling. Her ability to create such wondrous images of beauty from her imagination is an authentic trademark of her genius and inspiration. Kamni’s professional collaborations span the globe from New York City to the colorful world of Bollywood which is Mumbai’s South Asian Hollywood. It produces hundreds of movies and music videos that are seen by billions of people the world over making it one of the most important artistic havens of the fashion world. Naturally, it comes as no surprise that Kamni is a seasoned and sophisticated collaborator. She has worked with the rock star Atif Aslam. And she was the make-up artist for the pop-star Kee in her hit video “Dil Lagda Nai”. Her natural expertise and credentials have made Kamni a formidable talent in the industry. She has worked for the production company London Music Video as well as Diet Coke doing hair and make-up side by side with the celebrated wig maker and vintage hair stylist Seema Chopra. By nature of their profession creative stylists and make-up artists are particularly gifted as collaborators, and some of Kamni’s most enlightening experiences happened while working with other artists. The Paris based designer Serinde is a corset maker. Her original and fanciful corsets include over-busts and under-busts. “Working with Serinde was a project of just abundant creativity,” Kamni says of her work with Serinde. “The preproduction was so full of ideas from the concept to the colours. It was just like being a child again and planning your adventure of creating a magical story.”

When describing another of her favorite British designers, Laura Moore, Kamni is moved to an enthusiastic and generous praise for her colleague’s work. “Laura is an adorable girl, she is young, jazzy, creative and down to earth,” Kamni says. “Working with her was so much fun. Not surprisingly Kamni Syed is particularly adept at absorbing energy from her collaborators and giving one hundred and ten percent of her own gifts. “I do feel very connected to the people I work with because I have such intense energy and I always enjoy it, she confesses.

And, with all that Tammie has done in her professional career, her inspiration for modeling is Velvet D’ Amour, who was discovered in Paris by well respected and celebrated fashion designer, John Galliano. “Velvet is an amazing woman who is strong....[and] represents the curvy women [throughout] the world. A More Personalized Look at International Designer: Sumbul Rizvi

Interview By: Joyce “JLynn” Gonzalez

This International Fashion Designer emerging on the scene, which is based out of New Jersey, showcases her amazing talent of unique and one-of-a-kind designs. Originally from Pakistan and raised in Muscat and Dubai, Sumbul Rizvi has been honored with numerous accolades and prestigious awards regarding her work in fashion. With her jetsetting schedule, Sumbul takes the time to sit down with KEEL MAGAZINE and shares with our readers what her personal brand, the “Sumbul Collection” is all about and what makes her concept in fashion design so exclusive.

99

Q: Please describe to KEEL Magazine the concept behind the “Sumbul Collection” with your own line of clothing to our readers. Sumbul: My collection focuses on perfecting the personality of a woman. I find that my elegant designs offer a boost to spark their personality. With my” out of the box” fashion pieces, any woman will feel as if they are standing out in a crowd amongst a sea of people. Q: How do you view your signature in fashion as being different amongst other designers in the industry? Sumbul: I feel my attention to detail with all my garments of clothing with its color combinations, fabric blends, unique patterns, and embroidery has taken my ingenuity and creative designs to the next level---- always continuously progressing. Q: Now that you are based in the United States, but having been raised in other places internationally such as Muscat and Dubai, how has this shaped your niche in fashion? Sumbul: I find that my clothing is a glamorous blend of western and eastern designs, striving to make each garment of clothing from my collection a piece of art. Q: In comparing with so many lines of clothing both locally and internationally, why should consumers invest

100

in your collection of clothing? Sumbul: With the world of fashion, I have progressively set out to be that prestigious fashion label epitomizing modern design. My entire collection is based on changing the mindset of fashion design, especially with my line of casual and party-wear styles. I see myself as a fashion designer that doesn’t merely focus on design, but I also emphasize the importance of durability and comfort as well. Q: Please tell our readers, some of your achievements and most recent fashion shows you have appeared in with the “Sumbul Collection.” Sumbul: I recently participated in the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation Fashion Show, and also presented my collection in Plitzs 2012 New York Fashion Week. In addition, I showcased in “Runway Princess,” a New York based fashion show, where the model who won the crown wore my personal brand, the “Sumbul Collection” and was honored as being “Best Dressed.” I also displayed my designs at Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City and was awarded 1st Prize for “The Best International Designer” of April 2011. In expanding my signature style abroad in places such as Asia, I also received the 1st Place Award at the Pearl Continental Hotel in Karachi for being recognized as 2001’s “Best Bridal Designer;” and was also featured in “SHEEN” Magazine for winning a contest, allotting me the title of “Annual International Designer of the Year in 2011. “My signature look in doing hair & make-up is creating styles that are avant garde. I love being inspired by art and lending that type of creativity in my work. I am always thinking ‘outside of the box’ incorporating different materials, so that my work is unusually unique. I feel it is important to find ways to be different in order to set yourself apart from others. I have made the beauty industry my life. Style Profile – Q & A with Kholá Fashion blogger, style maven and entrepreneur Kholá Waddy-Jones has had a love affair with fashion since the age of 4. It was at that age that she used to talk her grandmother into buying Vogue for her at the local grocery. While she couldn’t yet read the all the pages, she knew those pretty pictures were her destiny. Fast forward to today and Kholá is making her mark in fashion. Her blog, Kholá’s Kloset, has been recognized for three ‘Top 20’ honors by IFB (Independent Fashion Bloggers), she’s been featured in multiple publications in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio and she’s worked with national fashion retailers covering events and styling. She recently partnered with a fellow fashionista to start the new online luxury consignment venture 24 Seven Couture. It seems the sky’s the limit for this petite wonder.

Q. What is it about fashion that’s kept your attention for so long? A. Fashion to me is expression. You can be a different person everyday without changing who you are. You may be boho one day a flowing maxi and the next, a downtown girl in high-waited trousers, a chunky knit and platforms. It’s about feeling good and of course looking good. It’s about creating a look- mixing, adding, making it unique to you. It’s also an art form to me. Q. An art form? Which designers do you think do fashion best as fashion AND art? A. Hands down, Alexander McQueen did it best. Any piece from any of his collections. Pure marriage of fashion and art. His samurai dress is one of my favorites. It was a print but it was amazing. There’s a reason he had people talking from his very first collection. It took some time for everyone to really understand his point of view but when they got it, they got it! Prabal Gurung also masters wearable fashion and art in his designs too. Q. What pieces would you advise that every woman (and man) have in their wardrobe? A. Other than the ones we all know- white and black tee’s, white button down, black pants, dark denim and a piece (or more) of statement jewelry like a cocktail ring, I think for women, a solid maxi dress in black or an ofthe-moment bright. It’s not only comfortable but chic. You can add a chunky necklace, a sandal or boot and go. It really is that easy. Dressing should be easy. For men, the same basics that work for women (above) work for men too. Just add a black suit, a dress shoe, a more casual shoe (subtract the cocktail ring) and you’ve got a plethora of options. Men can add an accessory like a hat or scarf and really get a ‘look.’ Just takes a little creativity. Find you inner stylist….or call me! (laughing) Q. Last thoughts – your go-to shopping destinations?

202

A. I’m a big vintage shopper so ebay is a definite go-to. I’ve found some great pieces there like the purple metallic plunging neckline gown by Victor Costa. It’s gorgeous! I also love browsing off the beaten path thrift stores because you can find vintage (and new) brand names for ridiculously cheap prices. I once found a Louis Vuitton bag for $4. Can’t beat that now can you? Visit Kholá’s Kloset at:

Kana Brown By: Joyce “JLynn” Gonzalez With her eye for beauty and the sweeping motion of her makeup brush, Kana Brown is a professional makeup artist & skincare specialist with the desire to make her clients feel good about themselves from the inside out in order to promote overall beauty. Acquiring honors as an esthetic graduate from The Salon Professional Academy in the Midwest, Kana has gained extensive knowledge in her industry with her personal craft in makeup artistry. “I just want to do good things and make the world a better place. I believe that my contribution starts with making people feel good about themselves,” Kana expressed. “[In provide my expertise] from giving stress relieving facials to enhancing features through makeup, I just love the feeling [when] someone is receiving a service from me and walking away a happier person.” Kana’s recent projects, showcasing her talents include being the primary makeup artist for the entertainment and social media group, 103GBF, and was the makeup artist for their 2012 online calendar. She was also featured on their website as the main “go to” makeup artist for the Hometown Honey’s, as well as their Harley Davidson Fashion Show. Currently in the works, she has another calendar project collaboration with Kevin Brown Photography of 106.1 KISS FM, where the proceeds of the sales will benefit and go towards the humane society. In addition, Kana is also the official and exclusive makeup artist for the Evansville Rage Cheerleaders. Always looking for ways to take her career to the next level, she just wrapped up doing makeup on set for a TV show called “The Book of Dallas,” a television series directed by Joe Atkison that will be aired abroad and internationally. According to Kana, her mantra is all about Knowledge, Love, and Beauty, which sums up the lasting impression she wants to leave with every person she encounters and works with. In developing her own personal brand being a professional makeup artist, she feels the opportunities and possibilities are endless; and for her, skies the limit. Because, one of the amazing aspects of being a professional makeup artist is that there are so many options.

218

Kana Brown “You never know who you will meet and what doors may open, leading you to your next project,” she shared with enthusiasm. Kana is very optimistic about her future, and always keeps an open mind to the direction and pathway her career will take her. “Maybe, I will help put Indiana on the map for fashion and entertainment,” she says with a smile. Although, she is aware that the fashion and entertainment industry are extremely competitive in nature, Kana feels by focusing on her job and not getting caught up in the competition with other professional makeup artists within the industry is essential. “Success is measured differently for everyone,” as she points out. “To me, [what] it comes down to; is [asking yourself; whether] what you’re doing is making you happy.” Overall, Kana believes, “A great makeup artist has heart and sees beauty in everything, and is able to bring it forward, so that the world can see [the beauty] that makeup artists see [in everyone].
