The press conference also announces the launch of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, an independent, non-governmental regulatory body responsible for implementing uniform medication rules and operational standards. Congress included the Act in its FY 2021 omnibus spending bill, which it passed Dec. 21. President Trump signed the measure into law Dec. 27.

Sept. 12: Breeders’ Cup Ltd. announces Keeneland will hold the 2022 Breeders’ Cup World Championships on Nov. 4-5. The announcement is made in conjunction with the decision to hold the 2020 event – also at Keeneland – without on-site fans because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nov. 6-7: Keeneland hosts the 37th Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which is limited to essential personnel and participants. Total all-sources handle is $160,472,894, the sixth-highest total since the Breeders’ Cup expanded to a two-day event in 2007. The two-day total handle represents a 7% increase from the 2015 Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland.

Oct. 2-24: The Fall Meet is closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic; only a limited number of participants and essential personnel are permitted to attend.

Dec. 17: Keeneland Association names Rubicon its exclusive sustainability partner.

Sporting Art Auction Each November since 2013, Keeneland and Cross Gate Gallery of Lexington have presented the Sporting Art Auction as a collaboration between the world’s largest Thoroughbred auction house and the country’s premier gallery of fine sporting art and contemporary British figurative painting. The auction annually features approximately 175 pieces of fine sporting art, American paintings and sculpture from renowned artists. The Sporting Art Auction, held in the Keeneland Sales Pavilion, is free and open to the public. The artwork is exhibited in the Keeneland Sales Pavilion beginning with the September Yearling Sale and continuing through the November Breeding Stock Sale. In furtherance of its mission, Keeneland’s portion of the proceeds from the auction benefits its non-profit initiatives. Here are the highlights from each edition of the event: 2013: Total sales surpass $3.1 million. LeRoy Neiman’s Flat Racing, a one-of-akind glazed ceramic tile mural, sells for $291,000, including buyer premium, to top the auction. 2014: Total sales are $2.25 million. The sale-topper is Ashley Collins’ massive triptych Hercules, which sells for $149,500, including buyer premium. 2015: Sir Alfred Munnings’ signed painting Lord Astor’s Broodmare and Foal brings top price of $207,000, including buyer premium. Gross sales total $2,534,370. Eighty-two percent of the pieces offered sell with more than 37 percent of those works bringing final bids at or above their listed high estimate value. 2016: Andre Pater’s Red Arrow, 2016, sold for $276,000, including buyer premium, following a spirited bidding duel to be the highest-priced work at the auction. of the pieces offered in the auction sold. 2017: Sir Alfred Munnings’ A Morning’s Work, Newmarket Heath sold for $186,300, including buyer premium, and gross sales totaled $2,426,040. Eightytwo percent of the pieces offered in the auction sold. 2018: The sale of LeRoy Neiman’s Black Lab for $149,500, including buyer premium, headlined the auction, which grossed $2,046,540. Also auctioned were items belonging to Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify that raised $67,850 in support of the Ann Hanley Parkinson’s Research Fund. A halter worn by Justify sold for $31,050, including buyer premium. Horseshoes worn by Justify and American Pharoah, framed with two Sports Illustrated magazines featuring both horses and signed by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and Triple Crown-winning jockeys Mike Smith and Victor Espinoza, brought $36,800,

including buyer premium. Bob and Jill Baffert donated both items. 2019: The high seller, at $97,750 (including buyer premium), is Sir Alfred Munnings’ A Gypsy Encampment. Gross sales total $1,707,175. 2020: Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the auction was held virtually. Andrew Wyeth’s Over the Hill, a watercolor painted by Wyeth in 1973 that remained in his personal collection until 2006, brought $109,250, including buyer premium, to top the event. Gross sales totaled $1,625,945. 2021: Gross sales reach $1,908,015. The high seller was Andre Pater’s War and Peace, a pair of signed and dated pastels, sold for $115,000, including buyer premium.
