Letter from Keirsey Dear Friend, Thanks for joining us for a new year of the Keirsey Magazine! We start off this month by featuring the Guardian Provider ESFJ. They stand as exemplary model citizens to admire and emulate. They are kindhearted, warm, and friendly. As leaders, they pay close attention to the welfare of all those under their care. We refer to them as the Contributing Leaders, for among all of the sixteen types, the Guardian Providers are the most generous in assisting those who need help. They are social, honorable, compassionate, and seek to make a difference in people’s lives. In this issue, we celebrate Barbara Walters. She is a fine example of a Contributing Leader, interviewing more statesmen and stars than anyone on the planet. She was a pioneer, blazing the trails as the first female co-anchor of an evening news program. She made an unprecedented $1 million annual salary when starting with ABC in 1976. She was the first of her kind, and her example has paved the way for so many women entering the field of journalism. She has landed significant “first interviews” of terrorists, celebrities, pop-stars, athletes, and dictators. She has interviewed every U.S. President and First Lady since Richard Nixon. Barbara stands as the best of the best in her field. This month, we also take a look at one of Dr. Keirsey’s first theories. Before he dove into studying the four temperaments of everyday individuals, he was fascinated by the insane. In this month’s Love, Sex, and Dating section, we take a look at, “Dating Different Kinds of Crazy.” We’ve all encountered craziness. If you haven’t, you may be that crazy person to someone else! Lastly, we have responded to some of the questions, you have asked about the Keirsey Magazine. We provide you with the inside scoop on our writing process, and we reveal how we choose our topics and leaders. We are excited to start this together with you. Thanks for your support! All the Best,

ORTRAIT OF A EADER

Portrait of a Leader

Contributing Leaders are persistent in their execution of steps in a winsome way. Barbara Walters was the pioneer that opened up doors for so many newswomen who came after her. One would think that it had to have been because she was a natural, possessing great charisma and beauty. However, if we look more closely, we would see that she rose steadily by engaging a number of roles. Before becoming the Barbara Walters, the preeminent interviewer of the famous and the infamous, she was a segment writer and producer; an editor; she did publicity and wrote press releases; she did research; and she was a weather girl. She started at the bottom and diligently rose to the top. It was her hard work and attentiveness that grabbed the attention of so many who wanted to be interviewed by her.

Contributing Leaders view their followers and customers as people to provide for rather than be exploited. In her book, “How to Talk with Practically Anybody about Practically Anything,” she provides stories which allow us to catch a glimpse of how highly detailed she was in her approach. She studied her interviewees extensively to understand their interests, so that she could reach the person, and not just responses to questions. She had a probing interview style, possessing an unusual ability to ask questions which the public wanted answers to, yet, she was able to inquire without making anyone feel alienated or threatened. It is noted that she had the ability to land the “first interview” with so many because her kindness matched her candor. She was diligent in showing appreciation while being thorough in her exploration.

ARBARA ALTERS

Portrait of a Leader

Contributing Leaders keep a pulse on serving their customers better than anybody else. It has been suggested that Barbara’s display of empathy stems from growing up with responsibility for her sister. She credits her sister Jacqueline (who was developmentally disabled), for teaching her compassion and understanding. Barbara Walters was masterful in drawing out personal emotion and displaying them herself. Her disarming nature caused even fierce, hard edged leaders to let their guards down. She was able to show compassion, and those being interviewed reciprocated. She knew how to win people over. Whether it was an elite Hollywood celebrity, a hated dictator, a CEO, an athlete, or pop music icon, she had the ability to penetrate the hardest exteriors to get to the heart of a person.

Contributing Leaders are the true citizens of their local communities. Through her talk show, the View, women of “different generations, backgrounds, and views” have a forum to be heard. Although she interviewed some of the most famous people on the planet, she was most inspired by her interview of a deaf-blind man (Robert Smithdas) who devoted his entire life to improving the lives of others. She has told the stories of the world’s most beloved and those who the world has demonized. Her efforts to continually give voice to others, no matter who they are, and her excellence in journalism has resulted in the granting of honorary doctorates from several universities around the world. For Barbara, her local community is a global one, and she has certainly made a difference in it as a true citizen of the world.

Contributing Leaders are recognized as respected statesman because of the value they add to any enterprise. She worked for ABC, NBC, and CBS. She has been awarded with the highest television ratings for countless interviews and shows she has hosted. She is recognized and respected as a true statesman of her industry. Barbara Walters is said to have interviewed more statesmen and stars than any other journalist in history. She has interviewed every American President and First Lady since Richard Nixon, she has interviewed world figures such as Russian President Boris Yeltsin, China’s Premier Jiang Zemin, Great Britain’s former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Libya’s Moammar Qadaffi and Iraq’s President Sadaam Hussein. She has won Emmy Awards, praise and recognition from all her peers, and the acclaim of many halls of fame. Barbara Walters has been a Contributing Leader to so many, and she is well deserving of her accolades, for they are the fruit of hard work, determination, character, and concern for others.

In their “normal” state, these rebels are already inclined to go against the grain, defying the establishment, acting with audacity. So when they feel horrible about themselves, all of this is taken to the extreme.

When they have lost love, they go crazy by diving straight into their impulses. This is due to the fact that they operate by pain and pleasure. So when there is pain, they do everything they can to get rid of the feeling. When painful feelings of worthlessness are looming, their “stand out” personalities start to “act out”— and these sensation seekers run to get their fix. Guardians: Depressed While Artisans would rather “stand out,” these conservative citizens seek to “fit in.” Guardians have the highest need to belong. It is important that they feel accepted by others. They measure their value

not respectable, they feel ashamed and feel as though they have become unacceptable. In fearing abandonment, they withdraw, which is ironic if you think about it. They don’t want to be abandoned,

by how much they are needed. In a relationship, they are extremely helpful, always wanting to be dependable and of service. So being in love for the Guardian is about being honorable, dutiful, and respectful to each other. Sizzling, sexy, steamy, wild adventures are not at the forefront of these honorable ladies and gentleman, but rather, one will find a person that is consistent and can be counted on. So the question is begging, “Can Guardians go crazy?” Well, the kind of craziness for them is not the “act out” kind of behavior, they move to withdrawal and depression.

yet, they go and hide in depression, secretly hoping that someone will notice. This leads them to spiral downward, as they worry about whether anyone will notice that they are gone. They get depressed because they feel like they are “good for nothing,” fearing that others will permanently brand them as worthless.

Dating & Relationships

I d e a l i s t s : H ys t e r i ca l Idealists have a unique and unusual way of interacting with reality. They prefer to live in ideality, where there is perfection, or at least where “their” perfection exists. Engaging the world for them is about believing that their ideals are manifesting in the outer world. It is about expressing their ideality in ways that will transform the outer world to match their inner world. Unlike the Guardians, their identity is not constructed by what they do. But, rather, what they do is an extension of who they are. Their aim is to believe into existence what they know in their hearts. Being in love with an Idealist is a spiritual journey, where exchanges are not transactional, but are a communal expression of a soul-tosoul/heart-to-heart engagement. They see romance as intertwining into oneness; being inextricably integrated to be inseparable. So, when love is taken away, or anything else occurs in reality

that conflicts with their ideality, they lose heart. Their beliefs are shattered, and their integrated identity feels disintegrated. Everything feels like it is falling apart. Since everything is all intertwined for the Idealist, feelings of worthlessness can be devastating. A small loss in reality is connected to the entire dream, so it feels like the whole sky is falling, when in reality it’s not the end of the world. This leads the Idealist to get hysterical. After all, from their perspective devastation is imminent. Hysteria kicks in, and they do everything they possibly can to hang on.

R at i o n a ls : O b s e s s i v e Unlike the Artisans, Guardians, or Idealists, Rationals don’t care to stand out, fit in, or express themselves. Rationals seek to transcend the past and the present, or even themselves. Their aim is to create a new world by solving problems which are preventing evolution and innovation. They live in the future, seeking to redefine reality, and alter its fateful path to a new and better one. They don’t believe in destiny or dreams as in the case of the Idealist, but rather, they believe that the world is maintained by incompetence, when it should be led on a trajectory where the human experience is always advancing. They see romance as a partnership of equally capable individuals, coming together to conquer the world. By nature, they are predisposed to be obsessive, but when they experience feelings of worthlessness, they become ever bent on rectifying their situation. Their method of madness is to be

obsessed with solving the problem. A Rationals way of experiencing worthlessness is evidenced in the form of self-doubt. When they feel incompetent, they shut out the world to solve their problem. It’s not a withdrawal like the Guardian, where despair comes after. It is a self-directed, deliberate move to be autonomous. They want to be left alone to figure out what went wrong, and when they’ve finally come up with the solution, they emerge back to engage and persuade. They sink into obsessions because they must tackle the challenge, to get everyone out of the mess.

Anatomy of a Contributing Leader

Anatomy of a Contributing Leader Guardian Provider ESFJ

C

ontributing Leaders thrive when they have people to work with in a structured environment. They desire to be around others because of their sociable nature. As

leaders they make sure that everyone they are working with is well equipped and organized so that operations can run smoothly. Contributing Leaders are masters of creating order and sequence to line up procedures with people. They are aware of people’s interests, skills, and natural talents and can match them up with resources, roles, and responsibilities to create effective teams. These leaders provide the right procedures and processes so that executing tasks occurs flawlessly. They are keenly aware that compliant people are necessary for this to happen, and will find the right people to get the job done right. Are you a Contributing Leader? Or do you know any leaders who are one?

Keirsey

28

Contributing Leaders look for opportunities where they can meet needs

C

ontributing Leaders are great providers of resources. They are highly resourceful and are absolutely

committed to doing whatever it takes to fill a need. These leaders are masterful at building bridges quickly between people to processes and people to people. They are constantly thinking about the people under their care and how they can help in making their responsibilities easier. They lead by regularly checking in to see how they can be helpful. They want to ensure that the people who work for them feels appreciated, cared for, and sufficiently supplied so that they can do their best work.

Contributing Leaders involve others to tackle challenges

P

eople find Contributing Leaders to be trustworthy, big hearted, and easy to approach. These leaders have a

way of making others feel comfortable, thus, people have a natural attraction to be a part of whatever they are doing. Followers feel at ease because roles, responsibilities, procedures and goals are made crystal clear. Anything built by a Contributing Leader works like well-oiled machines with precision. The people who do best under Contributing Leaders are those who appreciate a highly controlled and methodical environment. Those who seek stability, safety, and predictability very much enjoy their leadership.

Contributing Leaders make efforts to replicate goodness everywhere

C

ontributing Leaders are masters of creating a process and reproducing that exact same process elsewhere.

They make it a non-negotiable to perfect their process. Since they are so detailed and careful in documenting their methods, reproduction in a completely different geographic location with a different demographic is done rather easily. These leaders maintain quality control while reproducing what they do many times over. Contributing Leaders do not have a need to create variation from one place to another. They actually prefer to keep things consistent from one place to the next.

Contributing Leaders continue to invite others to join them in doing good

C

ontributing Leaders are often very well acquainted with the personal lives of those under their care. Since

these leaders care so deeply, they are extremely careful about who will become a part of their family. Once a certain level of loyalty has been established, however, these leaders are very inclusive with their trusted team members. Conformity to the same core values matters a great deal to these leaders. This brings a unity to the team that can be extremely powerful. The clear expectation for every member of the team is that each person contributes in a significant way. Everyone is there to be diligent, responsible, and effective.

Anatomy of a Contributing Leader

Contributing Leaders patiently build toward success one step at a time

F

rom the outset, these leaders feel most comfortable taking it one step at a time. Whether it is on a small scale, or a larger scale, these leaders find success when they take things step-by-

step. Execution for these leaders occurs best when these steps are taken carefully, with thoughtfulness and concern. When size becomes a factor for these leaders, often they can get a little nervous and feel intimidated. Taking the step-by-step approach can alleviate this anxiety. These leaders can be more effective when they step away from the minute details of the daily operations so that they can gain a crystal clear understanding of the big picture for what it will take to expand. Being in the process is different from looking into the process from the outside. When one is in the process, each step is taken in a linear way. Replication can occur easily when the entire process is viewed altogether, and then implemented in a step-bystep approach.
