Letter from Keirsey Dear Friend, In this issue of the Keirsey Magazine, we celebrate the legacy of the legendary female scientist Marie Curie. She was widely known for discovering radiation, (used in x-ray technology, and for treating cancer). What drove her was not fame, but rather, she pursued knowledge. She was intrigued by the unexplainable. She explored ideas, theories, questions, and found solutions for the impossible. Her greatness emerged because of her love for science, and her persistence to discover what others had never sought after before. All of these characteristics are fitting for the Rational Architect INTP. In this month’s issue, we also look at the question, “What is it like for the other types to date a Rational?” For example, what kind of influence will a Rational have for a Guardian, who is the complete opposite of the Rational? Will there be a balance between two different views, or will the two worlds collide and destroy? Who wants to date a Rational anyway? Aren’t they a little nerdy and often socially awkward? Additionally, come dive in with us on your finances and faith. This month’s issue is packed with transformative insights. Spirituality resonates for the Artisan when it alleviates pain. It becomes that place where they can feel a sensation of the divine. When an Artisan has faced tragedy, has an awakening, or they “hit rock bottom,� they find that the divine is the only sensation that can touch them. All that once touched their senses have lost its ability to stimulate, and so in the midst of numbness to pleasure, they find the divine at the deepest parts of their pain. It is like finding light in the darkness, water in the desert, and sight for the blind. They seek this kind of touch, for it is the only touch that satisfies and lasts beyond the moment.

their diligence. They get to experience salvation and love amidst an
evil world, where wrongdoers have left creation all twisted, tainted
and troubled. A place with the divine is where they feel credited
for standing up against the darkness of humankind. It is where
they are affirmed for resisting temptation and choosing the higher
ground. From their safe refuge, they can look outward and assign
blame for the condition of humanity to propagators of evil. They
meet the divine and find comfort in knowing that they are clothed in

Spirituality resonates for the Idealist when it gives them hope for their dreams. They see life as the fulfillment of destiny, where a relationship with the divine secures ideality for what is yet to come. Idealists seek harmonious relationships, desiring to love and be loved. To be considered worthy of affection. And this is what they receive at the deepest levels from the divine. It is in this place where they can be authentic, and unconditionally accepted. There is no need to search for their identity, for they are known here. Finding purpose and meaning is no longer a necessary pursuit, for it is where love resides, that they can just be.

Spirituality resonates for the Rational when it makes sense to them. They require an explanation for what they know. Ideas and theories adopted by Rationals are ones that are most superior in explaining reality as they experience it. If evolution seems more probable to them, that is what they adopt. If intelligent design presents itself to be more likely, then this is what they will accept. Rationals don’t believe blindly. They follow no prescriptions or directives unless they see the usefulness of such a system. Rationals are agnostics at heart about most of life’s pursuits, for they understand that there is still so much that is yet to be understood.

PORTRAIT OF A LEADER The Theoretical Leader Rational Architect INTP By Edward Kim and David Keirsey
Marie Curie (1867 – 1934) was the towering scientist of her day. She was born in Poland, educated in France, and was the first woman recipient of two Nobel Prizes (in physics and chemistry). She was brilliant, persistent, and courageous in her pursuits. She is heralded as the most famous female scientist of all time, and has also been awarded many posthumous honors. Together with her husband Pierre Curie, they discovered polonium and radium, and their works led to the further refinement of X-rays. Educational institutions and medical research centers bear her name, including the Pierre and Marie Curie University and the Institute Curie. Marie Curie is a formidable example of the Architect Rational INTP. She shares the same temperament type as Albert Einstein, and we call her the Theoretical Leader.

Theoretical Leaders lead by their expertise and thought leadership. She became a Theoretical Leader, not because she sought to be one, but because she had such a pure love for science. She did it for the “the beauty of science,” believing that “there is always the chance that a scientific discovery may become… a benefit for mankind.” During a time where women were not allowed to speak in many forums, she broke through to clearly establish herself as a leader. Many scientists found it hard to believe that a woman could be the originator of such important discoveries and the formulator of key theoretical works in her field. Marie Curie was the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and the first person and only woman to be awarded the prize twice (in multiple sciences). Her expertise and thought leadership positioned her to start the world’s first studies for the treatment of neoplasms using radioactive isotopes. She was the originator of the theory of radioactivity, and discovered two elements, polonium and radium. She founded major medical research centers, radiological centres, and mentored four Nobel Prize winners, which included her daughter Irène Joliot-Curie and her son-in-law, Frédéric Joliot-Curie. Marie Curie caught the attention of the entire scientific world.

Theoretical Leaders can see the underlying complexities of seemingly simple truths. Theoretical Leaders will question ancient assumptions, believing that assumptions can often be barriers to breakthroughs. Marie Curie hypothesized that radiation was not the outcome of interactions between molecules, but came from the atom itself. This was an important step in disproving that atoms were indivisible. Her ability to see complexity the way she did allowed her and her husband to publish 32 scientific papers. Her experiments enabled her to make the claim that diseased tumor-forming cells were destroyed faster than healthy ones when exposed to radium. She was able to connect her findings between radiology, anatomy, and automotive mechanics to procure X-ray machines, vehicles, and generators. As she conducted her experiments, she knew that discoveries in her laboratory had far reaching implications for the future of humankind. She believed that the scientist could discover breakthrough ideas if they remained curious and excited about their work. She said, “A scientist in his laboratory is not a mere technician: he is also a child confronting natural phenomena that impress him as though they were fairy tales.�

Theoretical Leaders are open to ideas that they deem to be useful regardless of the idea’s origin. Theoretical Leaders gather ideas, and partner with anyone who will advance their cause. They start from any place where opportunity can be found. Marie started her career by investigating magnetic properties of various steels. She was introduced that same year to Pierre Curie who also had an interest in the natural sciences. She used an invention built by her husband called the electrometer to discover that uranium rays caused the surrounding air to conduct electricity. She was utilitarian in using whatever resources were available, including people to further her work. She intentionally refrained from making any claims on the radium-isolation process, so that the scientific community could do research without any encumbrances. She believed, “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” This belief caused her to work with many to reach collective breakthroughs. She believed in building a better world, and by doing it with others. She said, “You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end each of us must work for his own improvement, and at the same time share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful.” Marie was an impactful leader because she cared about the mission over her career. Theoretical Leaders naturally probe for assumptions, implications, and relevance when presented with different hypotheses. Marie Curie was always reading books, corresponding with colleagues, while mentoring, and being mentored. She was a lifelong-learner, continually educating herself. She was influenced by others in her field like Wilhelm Roentgen who discovered the existence of X-rays, and Henri Becquerel who demonstrated that radiation seemed to arise spontaneously from uranium directly. As a result, Marie looked into uranium rays to do further research, and came up with her own hypotheses. She was able to see what was relevant, what assumptions were in play, and what the implications were for her pursuits. She was persistent, and displayed extraordinary willpower, and it resulted in the overturning of many established ideas in physics and chemistry during her time. This led to profound effects on society. Marie moved methodically, but without hesitation, carefully, but with confidence. Rather than settling for taking the typical role of a critic within the scientific community, she forged ahead to make discoveries. She said, “There are sadistic scientists who hurry to hunt down errors instead of establishing the truth.” She knew full well that her exploration would take a lifetime. She stated, “I was taught that the way of progress was neither swift nor easy.”

Theoretical Leaders have the patience to “stick it out” when dealing with complex problems. Laboratories were built for her by the notable Pasteur Institute and the University of Paris. This is in such stark contrast to her humble beginnings. Marie delayed her enrollment at the University of Paris because she could not afford the tuition. To make everything work, she stayed with her sister and brotherin-law, and then rented a small place using her meager resources. She suffered through cold and bitter winters, and occasionally fainted due to hunger. She studied during the day, and tutored at night to make ends meet. She got by with the aid of fellowships. She conducted much of her research out of a poorly ventilated shed next to her school that was not even waterproofed. At the time, the school did not sponsor her research, so she sought subsidies from various companies, organizations, and governments. The Curies conducted experiments that were not attempted in her day, requiring precision, and patience, at the detriment of their own health. They declined to go to Stockholm to receive their Nobel Prize in person because they were too busy working. Many sought to suppress her achievements because she was a woman. To achieve, she had to overcome. She said, “Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.” When asked about her career as a woman, she said, “I have frequently been questioned, especially by women, of how I could reconcile family life with a scientific career. Since Guardians are reliable, dependable, and compliant, they follow the rules of the system. So as long as the system is working great, Guardians do well because they follow. When the economy is booming, the Guardians follow along. The sad part of this is that w en t e econo is s erin t e still follow along. The key to avoiding bankruptcy for the Guardian is about

Artisans The Artisans path toward bankruptcy occurs when their need for the adrenaline rush gets out of hand. Artisans play big, live large, make huge bets, and give generously. In business and in life, they want to make big waves. And when they et to see t e e ects t eir rand gestures make, it gives them a high. What this means is that they are prone to play, party, and pursue pleasure endlessly. Artisans are also apt to take higher risks, for higher and ore i ediate a o s. en there’s an opportunity, they do
everything they can to seize it, often betting the entire farm. Artisans are young at heart, and never grow out of it. They can’t just get it out of their system. The antidote to the adrenaline high is to actually get to rock bottom fast. When an Artisan has had enough, and they are sick and tired of the same stuff that doesn’t lead anywhere, they wise up and say, “Enough is enough! I am done.” And when this happens, they jump to their feet ready to pounce.

Idealists The Idealists path toward bankruptcy occurs when they are naïve about reality. Idealists reside in their imagination, dreams, and ideals. They can sometimes be unaware of how much money it takes to make life work. Unless they are directly managing the books, they often are oblivious as to where the money comes from, or where it goes. There’s an assumption that believing in the goodness of life and good intentions of people will bring about good things. So, if their relationships are harmonious, and they see that life is
beautiful, they are content. Money does not matter to them all that much. And it’s because it doesn’t matter, that they care very little about how much money is made, how much is spent, and how much is saved. For the Idealist, life is so much more than money, so they pay very little attention to it. They use money for good, out of the benevolence of their hearts. So, if they can learn to count their money, they can make their money count for so much more.

Rationals The Rationals path toward bankruptcy occurs when they make big errors in judgment or serious miscalculations in their strategies. Rationals are visionary, and they seek to create the future they envision. So they commit, and then align their focus, energy, and resources toward the achievement of their objectives. Rationals are extremely sure of themselves, and
this can be a great asset in making it happen. It’s when they’re wrong, however, that they can end up in total disarray. The way to get through this is to anticipate failure as part of the process, and to have contingency plans in place. It’s to be humble and gracious when there is failure, so that they can just get back up and try again.

There are many pseudo-Theoretical Leaders who have wonderful ideas, but are unable to construct any worthwhile theories. True Theoretical Leaders make it an imperative to take mere simple ideas and develop theoretical frameworks for them, which make sense. They do so because they want others to have a chance to understand what they know. Conventional wisdom suggests stepping back and seeing “the forest from the trees.” Theoretical
Leaders have the ability to see that the macro view goes far beyond even the forest. They step back further to see the entire ecological system, or even the geological system—and then the entire universe. They are forever seeking the gestalt—“the bigger picture”—of every situation. Theoretical Leaders can see the whole picture at once— simultaneously experiencing the macro and the micro altogether.

Theoretical Leaders are voracious readers, and ravenous in their pursuit of new ideas. Some of the more introverted ones o ten re er to find solace in their study rooms where they cannot be bothered by trivial matters. They never stop talking to themselves. They understand, however, that coming out of their caves to communicate their theories to the world is a necessity. Endless research and revision must reach a point where enough is
enough. Theoretical Leaders make the determination that at a certain point they must release their discoveries so that they can be harnessed and utilized. At some point Theoretical Leaders get it that others won’t get it as fast or as deep as they do. They decide that what may feel half-baked for themselves is far beyond what is even necessary for their ideas to make an impact, and that emerging sooner than later is better.

Rationals see Artisans as having extraordinary competence, but they also recognize that Artisans can get easily side tracked, thereby, wasting away their talents. Rationals will encourage Artisans to set goals (both short-term and long-term ones). They will push them to think bigger than the immediate payoffs. They will fuel the Artisan’s audacity to make an impact that is long lasting, rather than just a momentary splash. They will create an appetite for the Artisan to hunger for success, and will

G U A R D I A N & R A T I O N A L When Guardians are in a relationship with a Rational, all of their assumptions, beliefs, and rules they adhere to are questioned. Rationals see Guardians as highly compliant, and this can be a good thing, as long as rules are not followed blindly. Rationals will encourage Guardians to formulate their own opinions, and get them to live their own lives, and not live the way society says they must. They will push them to question and challenge rather than accept things the way they are. They will fuel the Guardian’s desire for respect, by stating that self-respect is far greater than whether others respect you. They will create an appetite for the Guardian to hunger for independence, and will get them to think. They won’t allow their Guardian partner to just be busy without a purpose, or to follow what the book says without discerning on their own. If the Guardian steps into the Rational’s vehicle, they will be forced to make some U-turns, take shortcuts, and be okay with ambiguity.

When Idealists are in a relationship with a Rational, their search for their identity will be questioned. Rationals see Idealists as dreamers, but they recognize that dreams remain as mere good feelings until they are pursued. Rationals will encourage Idealists to create destiny rather than wait for it to unfold. They will push them to be tougher and to develop a thicker skin, so that they can roll up their sleeves to work for their dream in reality. They will fuel the Idealist’s need to be authentic, by stating that authenticity is only evidenced when dreams manifest in the world, and not when they are hidden in one’s own heart. They will create an appetite for strategizing fulfillment. They won’t allow their Idealist partner to settle for living with possibilities. Rationals will insist that they actualize their potential. If the Idealist journeys with the Rational, they will be awakened daily to live and to work, and not allowed to rest in the contentment of their delightful delusions.

R A T I O N A L & R A T I O N A L When Rationals are in a relationship with each other, they can be a powerful couple, pushing and competing with each other to drive harder, and to persist longer. Rationals see other Rationals as being formidable individuals, but they recognize that they can become obsessive with their pursuits. On the one hand, Rationals will encourage their fellow Rational to set boundaries, but will have a blind spot to their own need for this. On the other hand, they will push each other to the point of exhaustion to achieve an objective. They will go through hell together to get to their goal, believing that they can deal with the aftermath later. They will fuel
