About Us iSelf is the first magazine focusing on empowering people to be healthy and happy at any size and shape. It will inspire and inform people who have been previously ignored by other magazines, to find and celebrate their uniqueness in a society of constant pressure and conformity. The focus will be on all aspects of how to be happy within yourself, be healthy and live a full and enriching life. We will never have any quick fixes, lose weight quickly, strive for the perfect body stories that make you feel bad about yourself. iSelf will be bringing to the forefront some issues that are secretive for many such as binge eating, body hatred, guilt and shame of eating and more. We will only be talking to real people just like you, professionals who are working in the space and the researchers to bring you the latest and most valuable information for being healthy and happy at any size and shape.

Designing for Real Women

Welcome to the April issue of iSelf Magazine! On a daily basis we are bombarded with images of thin, straight shaped bodies in elegantly styled garments, rendered as beautiful and perfect in the media, fashion, social media and advertising. The more these images are presented, the more they are unconsciously accepted as what is ‘normal’. Kellee Waters Therefore, if you don’t fit into the perceived ideal of normal, then you start to internalise messages that you are not normal – not thin enough, not good enough nor beautiful. As a result, you may try to move closer to the ideal by dieting to lose weight, dressing with the trends, changing your hair and makeup to look ideally beautiful and exercising to try and get the perfectly thin body shape! You waste so much time and energy into this so-called vogue; and yet, you can’t seem to achieve the perfect ideal, leaving you feeling depressed and anxious, then you begin to dislike yourself and your body. You are not alone! There is a new revolution emerging and people are standing up to say out loud that, ‘we are all uniquely beautiful! There are no two people alike so EMBRACE diversity in body size and shape. Stop digital enhancing of images in media, fashion, advertising and social media! Today, the time is ripe to show Real images of Real people, particularly women.’ Come and join the movement! This month iSelf has gone to great lengths to go into the heart of the Curve modelling and fashion industries to bring you an insider look at how the industries are changing and being reformed for women of all shapes and sizes.

Your Body Is A Wonderland The Exclusive Peek Into Modelling Towards a Positive Body Image When you go clothes shopping, you have probably noticed that there are a variety of stores and styles but size variation is limited. There are so many clothing stores to choose from if you fit into the retail definition of ‘normal’ or ‘average’ which is a size 8-12. As soon as you are a size 14 and above, the range and styles to choose from, start to fall short. The retail industry is driven by the fashion industry, societal expectations of normal and the media. For decades, magazines and advertising have been dominated by ‘Straight’ models, being a size 6-8, tall and thin. Fashion designers have predominantly designed and showcased for this body shape and size, with the inclusion of selling up to a size 12. The covert message has been, ‘Beauty and perfection come in a thin package. If you don’t fit into the size 6-10 parametres then you are not normal, perfect nor beautiful!’ Chelsea Bonner, Director from BELLA Model Management says, ‘the images we see in the media permeates the mind’s eye and the more normal things become as we see them. That’s why fashion advertising and media are important as they tell us who we should look like and what we should want to look like.’ Therefore, millions and millions of females have accepted and internalised an unrealistic message and
