Can you share a bit about your background and how One Custom Clothier came to be?
My parents and I came to the United States from Italy in the late 1960’s.
trade, we opened our tailor shop as partners in the mid 1980’s.
How did your family history influence your journey into the world of being a custom clothier? I guess custom clothing is in my blood. I am the third generation and now the fourth generation, my 22 year old son, also has started his own custom clothing business.
What truly distinguishes Vince and One Custom Clothier is their dedication to creating a unique, indulgent experience. From the rich ambiance of their showroom, where clients can enjoy fine cigars and aged custom beverages, to the intricate details that define each garment, they exemplify the art of bespoke tailoring. Their well-deserved five-star rating is a testament to their commitment
My father was trained as a master tailor and worked here in Rochester for several factories including the only remaining custom tailor in town. He quickly decided that he had more ambition and went on to open his own tailor shop in the 1970’s.
Once I was old enough to learn the
What sets One Custom Clothier apart from other men’s custom clothiers?
It’s the amount of time that we work with each client that sets us apart from everyone else. I only take 2 sales appointments per day. Our new customers turn into clients and eventually into friends. For us it’s not about the quantity of garments we make but about the quality of the garment and it’s the relationship that sets us apart from the local competition.
How does it feel to be recognized as one of the top custom clothiers in your field, with over 500 5-star reviews on Google?
Keeping a 5 star rating with over 500 perfect reviews is pretty miraculous. We were also pleased to find out that were are Googles #1 Rated Custom Clothier in New York State, including Manhattan, which is home to many of the best custom tailors in the world.
We worked very hard and wanted to be ranked the #1 custom clothier in Rochester. The icing on the cake was being ranked the number one custom

clothier in NY state too. I am so proud of my team and my clients, for making this amazing milestone come true.
What do you believe is the key to maintaining such high levels of customer satisfaction?
Having an amazing product is absolutely key, but most companies don’t realize that’s not enough. As a matter of fact, it’s the bare minimum. . Many companies lose what I call the ONE on ONE difference. They turn to large annual events like fashion shows in order to try and connect with their clients
We do the exact opposite. We spend two hours on an initial consultation and at least one hour each on fittings and deliveries.
What is your favorite aspect of being a custom clothier for men?
Being able to solve a fit issue ,when no other store or custom clothier has been able to help them.
I also like the social aspect of being with my clients and having people appreciate the craft of a custom clothier.
Can you describe some of the additional services or perks you provide to your clients?
I’m not sure perks is a word I would use. One of the things I believe in is not trying to be everything to everyone. For example, we only do what we are the best at.
Amazingly
like suits, formalwear, dressy or casual sport coats, slacks as well as casual and beautiful dress shirts.
We do not make custom jeans, sweaters, belts or ties. We spend our time on the things that we do best and less time on trying to sell add on garments.
So, I guess that’s a perk of doing business with us.
How has your family been involved in the business, and what role do they play?
This is a family business. My wife and my children have always been involved in some way and still are.
What has been the biggest success for One Custom Clothier thus far?
I believe staying true to the artistry in the business is difficult to do. It’s so easy to chase the money. There are tailors that are willing to make you anything you like, but that’s not us. If it’s going to look costumeish, I will not make it. I will not chase a dollar and make someone look less than amazing.
So, I believe staying true to our core beliefs is an accomplishment that I am very proud of.
On the flip side, what has been the most significant challenge you’ve faced in your journey?
I think that all the custom tailors and clothiers in Rochester face the same issue. Finding master tailors. We are fortunate that we started making our custom garments all by
hand here in Rochester, just my dad and myself. Although with good fortune, came the inability to increase production. So we needed a partner that could help us in increasing our production capabilities. Over the years we have partnered with tailors in Toronto, the Far East and Italy.
Ultimately I believe the tailoring factories in Rochester were doomed many years ago because of the lack of tailors coming up in the ranks. Now that Hickey Freeman is gone, I believe the writing is on the wall. It’s only a matter of time before the last couple of clothing makers are going to meet the same fate and will need to go outside of Rochester or America to have their clothing made.
How do you navigate the balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern trends in menswear? That may be difficult for other clothiers, but for us it is quite simple. Like doctors that take an oath to “do no harm”. We do the same. We still make our garments one at a time and while some are partially made by hand we also still make many of our garments completely by hand.
When it comes to things like trends, we are really not interested. Our garments are made to be timeless. While most garments are made to last years, our garments are made to be worn decades.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to break into the custom clothing industry?
“ I guess custom clothing is in my BLOOD. I am the third generation and now the fourth generation, my 22 year old son, also has started HIS OWN custom clothing business. ”
“Definitely the best experience I have ever had. Vince had been recommended to me by a close friend so i decided to give One a shot. Vince made the entire process as seamless, extremely professional, and very fun.” - Jake M.
First, make sure you are in the right demographic or market. Second, make sure you believe your product is the best. And third keep learning your craft and be hands on if possible .
How do you stay updated on the latest fashion trends and technology in your field?
My mindset has always been to create the garments with timeless techniques, but improve the workflow and behind the scene workings with technology.
Can you share a memorable success story or client experience that stands out to you?
Every day is a success story when you get to do what you love. 4 days into any vacation, I can’t wait to get back to my clients and my work. It’s just fun to me.
What motivates you to continually strive for excellence in your work?
How do you ensure that each client receives a personalized and unique experience at One Custom Clothier?
That is what we are 100% about. We want our clients to experience the ONE on ONE difference. The
do before my God and Lord Jesus.
What do you envision for the future of One Custom Clothier?
I see a lot of garments made by others and it drives me to do better for them. Most clients don’t know what to look for in a beautifully balanced and tailored garment. I’m driven every day to give them the finest garment available anywhere in the USA.
would have an easier time getting my mom’s sauce recipe out of me. LOL
Are there any specific principles or values that guide your business operations?
Absolutely, what drives me is my principles and my faith. I am a Eucharistic minister and place all I
Great question! I certainly would love my son to be a part of this business but I also have a plan B.
I had a fun opportunity to meet a custom tailor that had a beautiful shop in Montreal for over 60 years. He was in his mid eighties and was still in business.
He said he would come in everyday for 3 hours and take care of 1 client. He would measure him up for a suit or some shirts. This might take 30 minutes and then they would spend the rest of the time drinking coffee and Cognac. He said it kept him young and connected to all his clients that he had known for decades. He admitted that he didn’t need the business any more, nor did those clients need anymore garments. It was just a great way to get out of the house, not have to listen to his wife.lol
I guess that sounds pretty good to me.
Finally, how do you define success personally and professionally, and how do you strive to achieve it?
“Absolutely loved my first experience at ONE Custom Clothier! Working with Vince couldn’t have been better, his knowledge and attention to detail is unmatched!” - Greg N.
I think success to me is pretty simple. It’s a mindset, not a dollar amount.
My definition of success is being healthy enough to get to do the things you want to do, when you want to do them. Overly simple ? Perhaps, but it works for me.
“I believe in combining old-world
craft with modern technique to produce custom designed, expertly tailored garments.
My interest is in creating a small number of exceptional garments for individuals who truly have a passion and respect for what bespoke has to offer. At ONE Custom Clothier, you will work exclusively with me
every time. I would appreciate the opportunity to show you the best suits in Rochester NY and to become your personal clothier” - Vince DiGiorgio

SENATOR JEREMY COONEY
Senator Jeremy Cooney has forged a distinguished career path marked by a deep-rooted commitment to public service and community advocacy. Raised by a single mother in Rochester, he credits his upbringing and the support of his local community for inspiring his journey into politics. After starting as an aide for the late Congresswoman Louise Slaughter in Washington, D.C., Senator Cooney’s career took him through pivotal roles in state government, including service under three governors and as chief of staff at City Hall. This extensive background, initially behind the scenes, provided him with a unique perspective on the inner workings of government and ignited his passion for effecting meaningful change.
Motivated by personal experiences, particularly navigating the complexities of the healthcare system during his mother’s illness, Senator Cooney’s dedication to improving healthcare accessibility remains a cornerstone of his legislative agenda. His legal studies at Albany Law School, where he specialized in advocacy and honed his skills as a technical writer, further equipped him for the intricacies of legislative bill drafting—a proficiency he continues to utilize in shaping impactful policies today.
facilitated the construction of a new long-distance bus terminal, fulfilling a longstanding vision of Congresswoman Slaughter. His legislative achievements also include championing the “Green Chips” bill to attract high-tech industries to upstate New York, fostering job growth and economic vitality in the region.
In addition to his legislative endeavors, Senator Cooney remains deeply connected to his constituents, regularly engaging with them to prioritize their concerns and aspirations in Albany. Named Chairman
service and the betterment of Rochester and beyond.
Can you tell us about the various jobs you’ve held throughout your career that led you to become a New York State Senator?
When you’re raised by a single mother, the community also helps to raise you. WIth gratitude for my late mother and Rochester, I was inspired to dedicate my career to public service. I started in Washington, D.C., as an aide for the late Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, worked for three governors and served as the chief of staff at City Hall. After working primarily behind the scenes, I developed my own ideas on how to advance our community and put my name forward in 2018 to run for the state senate.
of the Senate Transportation Committee, he is poised to further influence statewide policy on transportation equity and regional development, underscoring his commitment to enhancing quality of life and economic opportunities across New York.
Since assuming office, Senator Cooney has spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at addressing poverty, promoting economic development, and enhancing infrastructure within his district. Notably, his efforts secured $25 million in antipoverty funding for Rochester and
Looking ahead, Senator Jeremy Cooney continues to advocate for a future where every individual, regardless of background, can thrive and contribute to a vibrant community—a testament to his unwavering dedication to public
What motivated you to pursue a career in politics?
See above.
It wasn’t, however, until I was going through the end of life process with my mother that I truly understood how broken our healthcare system is for low and middle income families. Trying to navigate the benefits process to ensure my mother’s safety was incredibly difficult. I remember thinking to myself that “it shouldn’t be this hard for families.” I continue to try to make healthcare work better for all New Yorkers.
During your time at Albany Law School, what did you specialize in, and how has it influenced your political career? I went to law school to learn how to

better advocate for others. My time as an executive editor on the Albany Law Review helped me become a stronger technical writer and prepared me for the legislative bill drafting process. I have been pleased to continue to partner with the law school to hire staff and interns for my legislative office.
Can you outline some of your main initiatives in your office?
The City of Rochester contains some of the poorest zip codes in our state, and nearly half of children in the city live below the poverty line. These statistics are unacceptable and we must do better. I’ve helped lead the charge to secure antipoverty funding, including $25 million in this year’s budget for the City of Rochester. But it’s not just programmatic funding, it’s good paying jobs that will break the cycle of poverty.
That is why I am such a strong advocate for economic development both in the city and our suburbs. We’re seeing businesses choose Upstate to grow and expand their businesses, such as Micron outside Syracuse and Edwards Vacuum in Genesee County. Monroe County plays a key role in this emerging ecosystem and it’s crucial that we continue to support this growth to bring more jobs that will help families earn a living wage.
Which of your initiatives do you believe will have the most significant impact on your constituents?
I’m especially proud of the funding I secured to build a new long-distance bus terminal at the Louise M. Slaughter Station. Congresswoman Slaughter always envisioned a station that was
truly intermodal, supporting both trains and buses. After 12 years with a temporary station in downtown, I’m proud to say that we’re finally making the Congresswoman’s vision a reality with the $18 million I delivered to fully fund the new station’s construction. First impressions are everything, and soon our city will have the beautiful new gateway to downtown that our citizens deserve. On a personal note, it was meaningful to secure this funding—nearly twenty years after first starting to work for the late Congresswoman.
What are some upcoming initiatives you are currently working on?
I was recently named as the new Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee. Transportation is more than fixing bridges and potholes, although that’s quite important. Transportation is also about equity and quality of life, breaking down barriers to access jobs, education and healthcare by supporting public transit systems, like RTS. It’s about regional development and connecting workers to jobs across New York by investing in high speed rail and more direct flights from our regional airports. I’m excited for this opportunity and ready to dream bigger about connecting New Yorkers across the state and beyond!
How do you decide which issues to prioritize in your legislative agenda?
It starts with hearing from neighbors throughout Greater Rochester. Whether out in the community or constituents calling my office, my process always begins by hearing directly from those I represent. For example, my legislation expanding children’s literacy access
through the Imagination Library program came from a local pediatrician. Notably, fixing the issues facing our community often requires a holistic approach, and by meeting with constituents of all backgrounds I’m able to get a better sense of our most pressing needs.
What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishments in office so far?
I was proud to sponsor the “Green Chips’’ bill, state legislation that was instrumental in attracting companies, like Micron, to upstate New York. My legislation incentivises semiconductor (advanced chip manufacturing) companies as they make significant capital investments and hire local workers. We are already seeing the impact of that legislation and the ripple effect it will have on job growth in Rochester, with supply chain companies and partnerships with RIT.
Can you share a particularly memorable moment or achievement from your time as a senator?
When elected, I made history as the first Asian American to be elected to state office outside of Greater NYC. Last year, I was named one of the presiding officers by the majority leader and I became the first Asian American to preside over the New York State Senate.
What are some challenges you’ve faced in your political career, and how have you overcome them?
While at City Hall, I learned how to count votes. Being an upstate senator can be challenging because there are more NYC representatives to convince to pass legislative initiatives. But, I’ve learned to build relationships from wonderful

colleagues in the city and across Long Island. I helped bring a delegation of these senators to Rochester last year so they can better understand our challenges, including child poverty and challenges with the opioid crisis.
How do you stay connected with your constituents and ensure their voices are heard in Albany?
I spend a lot of the time on the road, nearly half the year. But when I’m home, I try to be visible within my district—from the grocery aisle to block parties to touring local businesses and nonprofits. Fortunately, I work with an amazing staff team, who diligently answer calls, respond to emails and represent me when I’m at the statehouse.
What are some things that people may not know about you?
Most people don’t know that I’m an Eagle Scout, which helped inspire my commitment to public service. This year, I celebrated my “Eagleversary” marking 25 years as a proud Eagle Scout. I serve on the executive board for the local Scouting Council and one of my favorite things to do is to honor young men and women at their Eagle Scout ceremonies.
When I took this office, someone shared that being an elected official is not a job, rather a lifestyle. That’s turned out to be true. I’m always “on,” whether at the grocery store, a little league game or church. That said, I try to be intentional with taking time to spend with my family and to better myself each week. And if not, my wife, Diane, will remind me to do better!
What role do you believe education

plays in shaping future leaders, and how do you support educational initiatives?
As the first Rochester City Schools graduate to serve in the state senate in over 40 years, I was very proud to carry legislation authorizing $475 million for the final phase of the Rochester Schools Modernization Program. Seeing the transformation of our aging school buildings into 21stcentury learning spaces is personally meaningful, as I studied in some of these same classrooms.
How do you balance your personal life with the demands of your political career?
Education and workforce training can change the trajectory of anyone willing to engage and do the hard work. After graduating from city schools, I earned scholarships to college and law school. That changed my life, and I want to ensure every student has the same opportunity— regardless of the zip code they live in. This means more funding for
How do you collaborate with other senators and political figures to achieve your goals?
We are fortunate in our region to have a strong state delegation that works together to meet the needs of our community. We are constantly sharing ideas, meeting with local government leaders, and ensuring that we present a united front in advocating for Rochester and Monroe County

when we are in Albany. I’m grateful for their friendship and partnership.
Looking ahead, what are your longterm goals and vision for your career and your district?
In scouting and in life, we are told to leave a place better than we found it. That’s my goal for us—building a community that is more vibrant, safe, and growth-oriented for the next generation of Rochesterians.

YOU ARE ENOUGH.
BY NICOLE HEROUX WILLIAMS I PHOTOS BY NSP STUDIO
Julius D. Jackson Jr. epitomizes a life shaped by diverse experiences and a deep commitment to community and faith. Born in Centreville, Mississippi, his early years were influenced by the strong presence of both education and spirituality in his family. Following a brief stint in Monroe, Louisiana, Julius’s journey led his family to settle in Rochester, New York, where his father’s ministry took root, setting the stage for Julius’s own spiritual path.
Educationally, Julius navigated Rochester’s schools before relocating to Henrietta, where he graduated from Rush-Henrietta Roth High School. His academic pursuits continued at Monroe Community College, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, each step shaping his understanding and passion for ministry—a path he initially resisted, despite a familial legacy deeply entrenched in church leadership.
At the United Church of Pittsford, Julius champions collaborative efforts with other churches and community groups, amplifying their collective impact. His approach blends a visionary outlook with a practical commitment to addressing challenges such as resource limitations—a common hurdle in pastoral ministry.
Julius’s role extends beyond the pulpit; it encompasses a heartfelt engagement with youth and a dedication to imparting
Julius D. Jackson Jr. is not only a senior pastor but also a catalyst for change, bridging faith, community, and personal growth with a warmth and authenticity that resonate deeply within the Rochester community. His journey is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the enduring impact of committed leadership.
Can you share a bit about your early life and background?
Julius’s career journey evolved gradually, beginning with pastoral roles in East Aurora and Rochester before finding his current calling as Senior Pastor at the United Church of Pittsford. His leadership extends beyond traditional ministry, embracing initiatives that fuse personal interests with community enrichment. He is a familiar face at local events, driven by a profound love for Rochester and Monroe County, where his extensive network and local knowledge empower him to connect people and resources effectively.
and community resilience. His vision for the future of his church embraces innovation while respecting foundational values, ensuring its relevance in today’s dynamic societal landscape.
Outside of his pastoral duties, Julius indulges in culinary adventures and music, finding joy in blending these passions. His ability to maintain inspiration and balance reflects a deliberate approach to nurturing positivity and surrounding himself with like-minded individuals.
I was born in a small town, Centreville, Mississippi. My first year of life was spent in Monroe, Louisiana until my parents relocated to Rochester, NY. My mother was a school teacher and my father was a Pastor. The latter was what lead to my family relocating to Rochester.
Where did you go to school, and what did you study?
My early childhood elementary school education began at School 37, and School 16 in the inner-city of Rochester. Prior to my family relocating to the Rochester suburb, Henrietta, I attended Wilson Junior High School. After relocation to Henrietta, I attended and graduated from Rush-Henrietta Roth High School. I later attended and graduated from Monroe Community College, Rochester Institute of Technology and Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School.
What initially drew you to the career field you chose?
I came to my current career later in life. It, by no means, was my first choice.

“The easiest way to engage with youth in the community is to provide outlets and resources to them.”
Having a father, and both maternal and paternal grandfathers in ministry I had no desire to pursue ministry in any way shape or form. I can’t exactly say I chose it, yet instead it chose me. You are often seen participating in community events. What drives your commitment to community service? My love for my community is the main driving force for my attendance at most community events. When I see organizations or individuals in pursuit of worthwhile endeavors, I try my best to support in any way possible. Most often than not my support begins with just being present. Having lived in Rochester and Monroe County most of my life I find it very easy to navigate and network within the community. Having this ability provides an opportunity to provide myself and others with resources and connections to get things done.
How did your journey lead you to become the senior pastor at the United Church of Pittsford?
Following my graduation from Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, I began pastoring a church in East Aurora, NY. The East Aurora Christian Church, which I was pastor of, was a Disciples of Christ Church that was United Church of Christ affiliated. During my time at this church I was ordained within the United Church of Christ Denomination. For my next pastorate I accepted the call back to Rochester where I pastored the Salem United Church or Christ. This was followed by a call to the Trinity Emmanuel Presbyterian Church which I served for 5 years until I accepted the call to
the United Church of Pittsford, where I currently pastor.
What do you love most about your role as a senior pastor?
What I love most about my current role as Senior Pastor of the United Church of Pittsford is the ability afforded me to pursuit efforts that go beyond just basic ministry to that which interests me both personally and can in turn translate to enhancing the ministry of the church.
Can you tell us about some upcoming initiatives or projects you are planning at the church?
We are currently pursuing efforts with other local churches and the community to provide greater resources to the community. There is strength in numbers and we are discovering many things that the collective can achieve above and beyond separate individual pursuits.
Have you always been involved with the church, or was there a pivotal moment that sparked your interest?
As a child, of course with my father being in ministry, I longed for the day when I could be independent and break free from what I felt was a restrictive life. After high school I did just that as I moved to Naples, Florida where I resided for 5 years prior to returning to Rochester. Several years after returning to Rochester and completing my undergraduate education I was lead to pursuit a divinity school education. The more I learned the more I was drawn into a life within ministry.
What are some of the biggest challenges
you face in your role, and how do you overcome them?
The biggest challenge currently in pastoral ministry for me is working with limited resources. As the old adage goes; “the harvest is ripe yet the laborers are few.”
How do you balance your responsibilities at the church with your community activities?
The best way to balance the responsibilities of Pastoral Ministry with community activities is to prioritize those activities which are mutually beneficial to both pursuits. Filtering out things in this way provides for maximum synergy.
Can you describe a particularly memorable experience you’ve had while serving as a pastor?
Many leaders will be able to tell you stories about times when they decided to lead efforts to change something within an organization. In many instances these efforts come with some resistance. Although many individuals will claim that they desire change, there are just as many examples that this is not necessarily the case. My most recent challenge came as I lead an effort to have a piano moved. The proper channels were taken and time has proven that the decision was the correct one, yet it did not come without some lack of enthusiasm, to say the least.
What are your thoughts on the role of the church in today’s society?
I believe that the church in today’s society needs to be at the forefront of most things yet also needs to balance
“The biggest challenge currently in pastoral ministry for me is working with limited resources. As the old adage goes; “the harvest is ripe yet the laborers are few.”
change with stability. This is easier said than done with many who have an aversion or misperception in what they believe being a part of an institution of faith institution entails.
How do you engage with the youth in your community, and why is that important to you?
The easiest way to engage with youth in the community is to provide outlets and resources to them. United Church of Pittsford doesn’t currently have a lot of youth who are directly members of the church community, yet whenever there is an opportunity to host activities we try to make every effort to support with whatever resources we can.
What are some of the key values or messages you aim to impart through your work?
The key values or messages I aim to impart though my work is a promotion that having a belief system is more beneficial than it is punitive or restrictive. It’s not all about what you must give up in as
much as it is about what you can gain.
How do you see the future of the United Church of Pittsford evolving under your leadership?
I believe the future of the United Church of Pittsford evolves naturally under my leadership because I bring my own unique presence in my role as leader.
Having not tried to emulate anyone else, my vision differs from others and as a result brings fresh ideas to the table. That being said, I am also always open to other perspectives to assist in the refining and cultivating of new ideas.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in ministry?
My first recommendation is to resist pursuit of a career in ministry. When you find that your resistance is futile, then try to learn as much as possible and explore as many other perspectives as possible. Respectfully, having knowledge of opposing viewpoints is actually one of the best ways to refine and strengthen your own belief system.
Outside of your professional life, what are some of your personal hobbies or interests?
Outside of my professional life, I am a bit of a foodie and love music. Although I don’t consider myself a professional cook nor musician, I will often be found engaging in endeavors which couple these two interests together.
How do you stay inspired and motivated in your work and personal life?
I stay inspired in my work and personal life though always looking for the good. I find that when this is done as opposed to the opposite motivation is easy to come by. Keeping an inner circle of individuals with this perspective is most beneficial also.
What is something not many people know about you?
Most people are not aware that I am a natural introvert and despite what my Facebook post may lead one to believe I make a point to carve out a balance of down time with my busy time.
“ My love for my COMMUNITY is the main driving force for my attendance at most community events. When I see organizations or INDIVIDUALS in pursuit of worthwhile endeavors, I try my best to support in any way POSSIBLE. ”

ANGELO ROSE: A SYMPHONY OF LAW AND MUSIC

Deep in the heart of Rochester, where the rhythms of life flow as dynamically as the Genesee River, one man has orchestrated a harmonious blend of legal acumen and musical passion. Angelo Rose is known in his community for being a beloved musician as well as a distinguished litigation attorney and owner of Finger Lakes Legal, Inc. Though at first glance, law and music may seem worlds apart, Angelo has seamlessly woven these two passions into the fabric of his life. His journey is one that embodies the delicate balance between the rigid structures of law and the fluid artistry of music.
Angelo’s lineage is steeped in legal tradition. His father, Michael Rose, and his maternal grandfather, Charles West Sr., both made their mark in New York’s legal arena. Their influence was instrumental in shaping Angelo’s path. Conversations about what it meant to be a “practicing attorney” were not mere discussions but guiding philosophies that Angelo absorbed while growing up and continued on during his formative years at St. Lawrence University. These influences, along with the selfless and compassionate way his beloved mother Rita lived her life, profoundly shaped his perspective, adding another layer to Angelo’s understanding of the importance of empathy and service in his professional journey.
“I saw the legal profession as an opportunity to help others and that particular inspiration came primarily from my mom. Her entire life has been dedicated to selflessly giving her time, energy and compassion to others.” Angelo shares. “The legal profession can be used as a vehicle for altruism. Often, lawyers are perceived to be stiff, boring, singular, uptight, dishonest. But at the end of the day, clients know the difference between
been a cornerstone of Angelo’s career, allowing him to immerse himself in various facets of litigation—criminal, civil, estates, corporate, and family law. Over time, Angelo honed his focus on personal injury, criminal, divorce, and estates practices, finding the courtroom to be a familiar stage where his interactions with judges, clerks, law enforcement, and legal peers became some of the most rewarding aspects of his work.
being ‘just a number’ and if they are cared and concerned for.”
Armed with the combined vision of upholding legal standards and using his career to help others, Angelo began his legal career alongside his father’s expansive practice, where he primarily focused on litigation. Even at 87, Michael Rose continues to work alongside his son, coming to the office multiple times a week. This close professional relationship has
Yet, beyond the courtroom, Angelo Rose finds his solace and self-expression in music. His journey as a musician began at the tender age of 12 with a guitar, followed by a serendipitous understanding of the piano at 17. By 15, he was writing and recording music, a passion that culminated in the release of a heartfelt debut album, Shadows, in 2007. “A very close friend from law school had been given a terminal cancer diagnosis and I simply wanted him to hear the album before he passed. Honestly, I had no clue how to record, engineer, produce or package something like that, but I figured it out. Shadows came out three weeks before he died and from thereon, I knew music was going to be a big part of my life,” Angelo tells. This poignant tribute eventually made its way to WBER 90.5 program director, Joe Guisto. Joe began playing several songs off that album on the radio

“I am hoping that this latest album will expand my platform and permit greater opportunities to help St. Damien and the children of Haiti. What is happening there now is incompressible.”
and that exposure provided Angelo a significant bump into the music world.
When asked about his musical influences, Angelo reflects on a vibrant and diverse musical upbringing. “I was raised around jazz, with both my parents being fans of that genre. Because my older sisters were jamming their way through school ahead of me, rock and funk were also prevalent in the Rose house,” he shares. “Throughout college and law school, my musical taste expanded to more indie-based artists and blues. With my band of 15 years, Good Trip, we explore extended versions of some Grateful Dead jams but mostly play original music now. Big Head Todd and the Monsters and The Samples are two of my biggest influences from a style and sound perspective. When producing or recording, I am drawn to the sound and flow that emanated from those bands.”
Since the release of Shadows, Angelo’s musical career has flourished. About to release his seventh solo album and 2nd with Good Trip, his music has garnered attention far beyond Rochester, with streams in over 80 countries. Despite his success, Angelo is quick to acknowledge the instrumental role his mentors have played in shaping both his music and legal careers. Locally, his two biggest musical mentors have been Dan Schmitt and Joe Chiappone, the owner of Northfield Music in Pittsford. “Dan and Joe have been there every step of the way since I was 14 years old,” Angelo recalls. “And,
after my first album, I worked with Michelle Taylor as my vocal coach, and I still lean on her occasionally for her exceptional insight. As fantastic as their respective musicianships may be, they are even better people. I am incredibly lucky.”
Alongside his musical successes, Angelo is transparent about the darker and more frustrating side of the industry: “There’s been a seismic shift in the music industry with the rise of streaming platforms, where even renowned artists struggle to earn meaningful revenue. I retain full ownership of my music, avoiding the need to share profits with labels,” he explains. “Yet, streaming royalties are shockingly low—between .003 to .008 cents per play on Spotify. It’s a paltry sum that affects all musicians and their fans alike.” Angelo highlights the challenges bands face in generating income solely from streaming, leading to extensive touring and reliance on production and ticketing companies that inflate costs. “Everyone has their hand in the till. I feel horribly for so many talented musicians I know trying to ‘make it’ out there. The industry’s current state is regressive,” he observes. “And we must restore value to artistic expression.”
In the dynamic world of the music industry, frustrations often abound. Yet, in just one conversation with Angelo, optimism shines through. His outlook on life is decidedly positive, a trait that extends beyond words to his actions. Through both, his deep-seated care for others is unmistakable. This sentiment, integral to his character, is
palpable the moment one steps into Finger Lakes Legal, Inc. There, Angelo’s essence is felt—a blend of warmth and professionalism that epitomizes a personal touch. His vision for his practice was accomplished: a smaller, more intimate firm where clients feel valued and receive his direct attention for the entirety of their case. While at work, Angelo doesn’t have to look far for inspiration; his father, in the office next door, has been his guiding light. “His stellar reputation opened so many doors for me when I was starting out. I quickly realized how fortunate I was,” he reflects. Angelo also mentions the prominent criminal defense attorney Joe Damelio, who worked with his father for many years and provided invaluable advice and perspective as Angelo began his trial career. And, of course, there is his grandfather, Charles West Sr., who worked downtown for over 50 years and was renowned for his incredible work ethic, fairness, decency, and honesty.
When reflecting on client cases that stand out, Angelo shares two poignant examples. “One of the last homiciderelated trials I handled in Rochester several years ago was excruciating. I was convinced my client was innocent, misidentified as a shooter at a local gathering. He spent almost a year in jail awaiting trial, and after a lengthy deliberation, the jury returned a verdict of ‘not guilty.’ Somewhat ironically, it was my client’s birthday, and finally, he was free.”
He continues, “The other case involved a personal injury matter where there
“ I was FORTUNATE to visit St. Damien and Haiti in 2017, see the work that TRUE HEROES do there everyday. That trip shook the foundation of, well, EVERYTHING I KNOW. ”
Angelo is humbled that clients often remain in contact with him after their cases end and his representation concludes. “I cherish this part of my practice. I am immensely proud of what we do and the people I work with every day.”

insurance company to settle. My client had to overcome countless physical, legal, and personal obstacles to simply get to a jury. We fought for nearly five years, even had to appeal a ruling that wrongfully terminated the lawsuit. Finally, after a long trial and right before Christmas in 2016, a jury returned a verdict in favor of my client that was not only just but also the second-highest jury verdict in the history of Ontario County.”
Beyond his professional life, is yet another faucet of this multi-hyphenate – his humanitarian efforts through St. Damien Pediatric Hospital in Haiti. Angelo’s connection with St. Damien deepened following his visit in 2017. Reflecting on his upcoming album release with his band Good Trip— featuring Tom Bernacki, Mike Borrelli, and Nathan Thomas—he shares, “We’ve poured our hearts into this
work, leaving him deeply moved. “That trip challenged everything I thought I knew,” he reflects. “With this album, I hope to amplify awareness and support for St. Damien and the children of Haiti. The situation there is beyond words.”
Despite the victories and supportive mentors at his side, Angelo will be the first to tell you that balancing his dual careers requires a delicate prioritization and the necessity of creativity in both fields. He describes how crafting a compelling closing argument for a jury is akin to composing lyrics for a song— as “both require a keen sense of rhythm and narrative flow.”
Angelo acknowledges that his legal work often takes precedence, but music remains an integral part of his world: “Music sometimes suffers but always finds a way into my life on a daily basis, even if it is just playing the guitar or piano for 15 minutes in an exhausted stupor at the end of a long day.”
project throughout the winter and spring, and it’s set to launch this July. A portion of all streaming and music proceeds will support St. Damien Pediatric Hospital.”
Angelo first engaged with St. Damien in 2010, following the tragic earthquake that claimed over 300,000 lives and orphaned countless children. His transformative visit in 2017 underscored the profound impact of the hospital’s
Between his humanitarian musical endeavors and fighting for his clients in the courtroom, it’s easy to see how Angelo’s life mirrors the bisection of the Genesee River in his beloved hometown, each branch flowing with its own currents yet deeply interconnected. When questioned about the legacy he hopes to leave in both his legal practice and contributions to Rochester’s music community, Angelo expresses a simple yet profound aspiration: “I hope to be remembered as fair, honest, hardworking, and empathetic in both realms of law and music.” His desire reflects a commitment to integrity and compassion that transcends his dual roles, aiming to leave a lasting positive impact on everyone he serves.
ALL of Angelo’s revenue goes to St. Damien for the children of Haiti, including this most recent release, entitled “The Living Room” and streaming on all major platforms. So when you make a puchase it is going directly to this amazing cause! Visit haitisrain.org where you can also make a donation.

MEET DAVID MAMMANO
YOU ARE ENOUGH.

BY MARISA ZEPPIERI
David, tell us a little bit about yourself and your background. How did you get started in your career?
I’ve been entrepreneurial since I was six years old. I went out to shovel driveways and couldn’t get any customers because it was late in the season. I decided to change the rules of the game, and started shoveling the driveways first. Then I went to the door with my cute little six year old face and told them I just shoveled their driveway. I figured unless they were a psychopath, they’d at least give me a dollar. Well, I was right and I made about $100 that day. Not bad for a little kid in the 70’s!
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur, motivational speaker, writer, and coach?
It’s just my calling. I believe God gives us a few gifts and it’s our job to realize those gifts and use them to make the world a better place.
You’ve been a TEDx speaker. What was that experience like, and how did it impact your career?
The experience was incredible and I loved it. Trying out is fun and once you’re accepted, they have a system to make sure you practice enough so you give a succinct and impactful speech. It helped me to be a better speaker and also being a TEDx speaker also added some credibility.
I am an adjunct professor at the University of Rochester and teach a fifth year program called e5. Students apply and if accepted, they stay on for a free year of an intense entrepreneurial program where the students start a business. It’s a really unique program that I love. I knew the previous professor and would speak in the class often. Once he retired, he recommended me to take over and the Dean agreed! So 10 years later, I am still teaching it.
I was proud that while we started small in Rochester with distribution in about 150 high schools, we ended up expanding nationwide to 20,000+ high schools and helping thousands of teens every year. I was also so proud of the team that we built. Our culture was amazing and we were able to create a 3X’s Inc Magazine company and a Rochester Top 100 company.
As an entrepreneur, what do you consider to be your most significant achievements? I have always created objective content to help people. I am doing it currently with a weekly show I host called The Optimize Show. In the past, I’ve also created publications, podcasts, shows, and motivational talks. I am proud of the content I’ve created to help people and I sincerely hope it has changed and inspired many lives.
to achieve with it?
The mission of Next Step was to help high school students with college, career and life skills. My goal was to help teens all over the country with creating a successful life after school, based on their individual dreams and talents.

What were some of the greatest successes you experienced with Next Step?
How do you balance your roles as a motivational speaker, writer, coach, and
Great question! I do my best and go with the flow. I am an early riser and am very good at creating a schedule. I love doing everything that I do, so it all just kind of works out.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of your career so far?
It’s really rewarding for me to create content and then have someone tell me that it changed their lives. I literally have had people tell me that they followed

their dreams because of something I wrote or said. How amazing is that?!
What types of community involvement are you currently working on?
I am very involved with a new nonprofit called Miss Julie’s School of Beauty. Julie Chapus, the Founder and Director has created this amazing organization where women who are able to escape a life being trafficked, can get a free cosmetology license so they can start their lives over with a career. Julie and her team are doing amazing work already and she also recently won the Athena Award!
How do you see your role in the community evolving over the next few years?
I’d like to get more involved in supporting nonprofits with my expertises. I have a soft spot for young people and will probably focus more on charities that help them.
What advice would you give to
aspiring entrepreneurs who look up to you?
Build a community of mentors. It’s amazing how many seasoned entrepreneurs are willing to help new entrepreneurs, so take advantage of that. Don’t go at it alone! Create an advisory board to help shorten your learning curve.
How do you stay motivated and inspired in your various roles?
I have a great network who inspires and motivates me every day. I also work out, eat well and read every day. I work hard at staying on top of my mental and physical health.
What are some of the key qualities you believe are essential for success in entrepreneurship?
I believe that great entrepreneurs are humble, resilient and not afraid to try new things. I also believe that most successful entrepreneurs are focused on helping others and making a difference,
Are there any upcoming projects or initiatives you’re particularly excited about?
I’m really excited to see what we can do with Miss Julie’s School of Beauty.
How do you envision the future of your career and your impact on the community and beyond?
I’d like to take my gifts and help others. I love hosting, speaking and using my energy to inspire others to be their best. I’d love to leave a legacy of people who can look back at how I helped them and helped to make their life better.

Introducing Blake Webber: A Passionate Advocate and Real Estate Expert
In the bustling realm of Rochester’s legal community, Blake Webber stands as a distinguished figure, celebrated not only for his prowess in real estate law but also for his entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to his clients. Raised in Webster, Blake’s journey into law was seeded in his early desire to advocate for others, a passion that bloomed into a successful legal career spanning nearly two decades.
Blake’s venture into the legal profession began humbly in 2005 at a small real estate law firm in Buffalo, New York. His early experiences shaped his expertise across various legal domains before he inevitably gravitated towards real estate law, a field he has passionately championed throughout his career. His tenure at a real estate investment company and subsequent roles in specialized litigation further honed his skills, ultimately leading him to establish Webber Law, PLLC, in March 2013, where he continues to empower clients with insightful guidance and dedicated service.

leisurely strolls and even vacations—a testament to Blake’s nurturing spirit and unwavering compassion.
Outside of his legal endeavors, Blake finds solace in nature, drawing from his background as an Eagle Scout to relish in hiking and camping. His commitment to balancing work and personal interests reflects a meticulous approach to life, where every moment is cherished, whether it’s exploring Rochester’s culinary delights or embarking on adventures
and community alike. His journey from advocacy to entrepreneurship underscores a profound dedication to excellence and a deep-rooted passion for the law—an ethos that continues to define his illustrious career.
Blake, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started in the legal profession.
Ever since I was a young child I enjoyed advocating for people. I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a lawyer. I did not realize that I would also be a business owner.
Have you always been in the real estate attorney field, or did you start in a different area of law?
I have worked in many areas of law through my almost twenty year career, but real estate has been a part of my career since the very beginning in 2005 when I worked at a small real estate law firm in Buffalo, New York.
Beyond his professional achievements, Blake’s personal life is imbued with a deep love for animals, particularly evident in his devotion to his Chihuahua, Miss Ruth, a rescue dog whose arrival enriched Blake’s life immeasurably. Their inseparable bond extends from the office to
with his beloved companion, Ruth.
As Blake looks ahead, he anticipates significant developments on the horizon, underscoring his dedication to honesty and transparency. His upcoming ventures promise to further underscore his role as not just a legal practitioner but a community leader dedicated to shaping the future of Rochester’s legal landscape.
In essence, Blake Webber embodies the epitome of legal expertise, compassionate stewardship, and unwavering commitment to his clients
What motivated you to specialize in real estate law?
Over the span of my career I have always done real estate and seem to be best know as a real estate attorney. I do handle a few other areas of law, but the vast majority of my clients are real estate clients.
Have you ever worked for anyone else, or have you always owned your own legal practice?
I began my legal career at a small real estate law firm in Buffalo, New York. After I was admitted to practice law I moved home to

work as in-house counsel at a real estate investment company. From that position I moved to a larger firm that handled many areas of law including specialized litigation, but within a few months I was asked to assist with their commercial and residential real estate transactions. It would seem I was destined to focus of real estate law. After seven years I left the larger law firm and setup Webber Law, PLLC, in March 2013.
Where are you from originally, and where did you go to school?
I am originally from Webster and grew up in Webster until I moved out of my parents’ home. I went to school locally starting with Holy Trinity for grade school and then McQuaid for high school. After high school I went to MCC for a two-year degree and transferred to S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo for my undergraduate degree and then law school degree. I was very fortunate to have such wonderful schools located in our area.
What are some of the greatest things about what you do as a real estate attorney?
I get to assist clients in one of their most expensive and exciting transactions of their lives. Most clients are first time home buyers and it is very rewarding to assist them with a complex process.
What are some of the challenges you face in your profession?
The constant changes in the industry are not easy to navigate, but it is always interesting and most times the changes can benefit the clients. Technology
does seem to be an important area to watch as it seems technology will continue to play a growing role in real estate.
Have you always loved animals, and how did this passion begin? I have always enjoyed animals, but in a prior relationship I had a special dog, Miss Mia enter my life. I was immediately won over and it was very hard to lose her to the ending of a relationship, but she is still in very good hands and very well taken care of. I knew I wanted another dog and after an appropriate amount of time I put out a message on social media that I was hoping to rescue a Chihuahua. To my surprise within a few short weeks a few people in real estate reached out about a dog who was at a breeder that needed to be rescued … a few days later, Miss Ruth was a new part of my life. She is an absolute blessing for me and I could not imagine my life without her. She is always by my side.
Can you tell us about your latest adoption and what inspired you to adopt this particular animal?
Miss Ruth was a rescue dog from a breeder in South Carolina that was shutting down and needed someone to foster her until she could find her forever home. I was able to adopt her directly as I had no reservations on adding her to my life. She goes with me to work, vacation, and as many walks as we can handle (she is usually in a stroller or dog carrier).
What are some of the things that you enjoy doing when you’re not
working? I really enjoy walking, dining out at some of the wonderful restaurants in Rochester, and traveling (Ruth included).
How do you balance your work life with your personal hobbies and interests?
Being a sole owner of a law firm does create some challenges with work life balance, but overall, I handle it pretty well. I make sure to always schedule some time for myself and incorporate walking into my business calls.
Tell us something that most people don’t know about you. I am an Eagle Scout and still enjoy hiking and camping.
What are some common misconceptions people have about real estate law?
Many lawyers believe it is an easy area of law to add to their areas of practice. A law firm that focuses on a different area of law and does some real estate, should be very cautious as it is a high malpractice area of law.

Ian, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started in the car industry.
I always had an interest in the automotive industry because of my love for cars. My father also worked in the business, and I saw how rewarding it could be growing up. He told me to be a Dentist or Anesthesiologist. They make big money and work easy hours he would say. It’s safe to say I didn’t listen and followed in his footsteps anyway. When I was in college at Saint John Fisher, I obtained my car dealer’s license. I was operating as North Shore Imports; I would always have a few $5,000 vehicles for sale at any given moment. At the time I lived above Tony D’s in Cornhill Landing. The rent there was less than a college dorm, and it came with fewer rules. I became friends with Tony, and he let me put my cars in front of his restaurant for sale. This was my college job at the time, and I did well.
How did you become the owner of Bob Johnson Mazda?
I have been with the Bob Johnson Auto Group for 14 years. We acquired the Mazda store about 4 years ago. At the time of inception, I was offered an opportunity to buy in as a partner. I had saved some money from the past 10 years of employment, and I also continuously fixed and flipped whatever house I lived in. I turned five houses over those 10 years. I also consequently became quite handy at random things like tile, framing, drywall, and more... When the opportunity presented itself to become a Partner of an amazing automotive group I didn’t hesitate, and I had the funds to do so.
IAN LOVE
What was the biggest challenge you faced when you first took over Bob Johnson Mazda?
The Biggest challenge when we first took over Marketplace Mazda was the facility. It needed a complete remodel. In addition, business still needed to proceed forward. So, we worked around the construction until it was finished. We still managed to grow the business while we were working out of makeshift hallways.
Can you tell us more about the Bob Johnson scholarships that you offer?
Bob Johnson Automotive group is Partnered with Prime-Time 585. This was something I felt aligned with our interest in supporting youth sports. Karen and Gerard from Prime-Time travel across New York to cover Section V high school sports. They give kids the spotlight they deserve. We also pick a student-athlete every month to give a $500 Character-based scholar to. They can use the money however they see fit. Whether it’s for books, application fees, or food; it doesn’t matter. It’s safe to say we couldn’t be happier thus far with our partnership and all that Prime-Time 585 does to help the community.
How do you select the recipients of these scholarships?
The Selection is strictly Character-based. Being a senior student-athlete is the only prerequisite. For character, we look at what they do for their community, and or others around them.
What impact have you seen these scholarships have on the recipients and the community?
That’s tough to say, some of these kids work two jobs to help support their family on top of school and sports. So, I never ask how they are going to spend it; but I can tell all the recipients have been truly grateful.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
When I’m not working, I like to spend time with my family or be on a racetrack.
What motivates you to keep improving and expanding your dealership? My children are my main motivation for success. I want to create a legacy they can one day carry on.
What do you feel sets the Bob Johnson Auto Group, especially the Mazda dealership, apart from other dealers? While Bob Johnson is a large automotive group, it’s owned and operated by local Rochestarians who were born and raised here. This allows us to give the customer that small-town feeling but with a big retailer discount.
How do you ensure customer satisfaction and loyalty at your dealership?
We try to make follow-up contact with every person who buys or services their vehicle with us. This is done to help ensure every person has a great experience.
Can you share a memorable customer experience that stands out to you?
The most memorable customer experiences are always getting to see someone take delivery of their very first car. They will never forget that, and I enjoy taking part in creating that

and I enjoy taking part in creating that memory forever.
How do you stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in the car industry?
To stay updated with the latest trends and tech in our industry, I often read automotive news and attend meetings at the Rochester Automobile Dealer Association. This helps stay on top of stuff nationally and locally.
What strategies do you use to keep your team motivated and performing at their best?
I try to always give people the recognition they deserve. I think acknowledging their hard work helps keep them motivated to perform their best.
How do you juggle family and personal life with professional responsibilities and the long hours?
I don’t want to miss a moment.
Can you tell us about a time when you had to make a tough decision for the business and how you handled it?
I took over Bob Johnson Mazda in July 2020. This was also the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. I had to operate with much less staffing, undergo construction, and somehow still grow the business. We did it
car dealership?
To someone looking to start their own car dealership, I would say it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of money. You can become a small used car dealer very easily like I did in college. However, to be a New Car Owner/Operator you need approval from the manufacturer. To do this, you must have enough working capital to carry the business through financially tough times and a lot of previous experience managing a New Car franchise. They may also require certain education in addition such as Northwood Automotive College or N.A.D.A academy. I chose to attend N.A.D.A academy after completing my bachelor’s degree from St. John Fisher.
Juggling family and professional responsibilities is very difficult. I honestly couldn’t do it without my other half Viktoria. Even with her help, I still don’t take much personal time. Currently, my focus is primarily on my business and my family. In my free time, I like to race cars, but I don’t do that too often. When the kids are older, I’ll start to take more personal time. Until then
though, this store went from roughly 30 car sales a month to 150. We have also been Number 1 in our district every month in sales for over 2 years in a row now. It took a while to get there but now we are constantly on top.
What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own
How do you envision the future of Bob Johnson Mazda and the car industry as a whole?
I believe Bob Johnson Mazda will be at the forefront of the automotive business for many years to come. However, the future of the auto industry is very unpredictable. Some manufacturers have given hints of going direct to consumers which would cut dealerships out of the mix. Mazda is not one of those brands. There is also a huge push to be 100% electric by 2035, but I don’t see how
“Bob Johnson Automotive group is Partnered with Prime-Time 585. This was something I felt aligned with our interest in supporting youth sports.”
how the infrastructure by the state and government can support it. Mazda also understands this as well and has one of the most fuel-efficient engines ever built. So even with these uncertainties, wherever we end up or whatever we drive, Bob Johnson Mazda will be here to sell and service it with great care.
What legacy do you hope to leave behind at Bob Johnson Mazda? My goal is to own multiple franchises
before I retire. I already have ownership in a few; Mazda will always be special to me though because it was my first store. My father, who has been my mentor, also got his start in the business at a Mazda store. He worked his way up the ladder from washing cars to becoming the General Manager. It just goes to show this business has so many opportunities for those willing to put in the work. It’s safe to say Mazda has always been a part of my life and helped shape
the direction our family took in the automotive industry. Someday I hope for my children to take an interest in this business. Possibly even get their start at a Mazda store as well; like their father and grandfather did before them.

“Writing is fuel for me. It comes natural. I started off writing numerous plays and skits.”
Greg Connors, a founding partner at Connors & Ferris law offices, traces his journey from a small town upbringing in Hornell, New York, to becoming a prominent figure in the legal community of Rochester. Greg’s path wasn’t always destined for law; he initially pursued studies in ceramic engineering before pivoting to political science and business at Alfred University. This shift, influenced by his upbringing and collegiate experiences, laid the groundwork for his future in law.
Greg’s decision to attend law school at Ohio Northern, another smalltown environment akin to his roots, further solidified his commitment to a career where he could advocate for others. Inspired by his competitive spirit honed through sports and a natural inclination to stand up for the underdog, Greg found resonance in the practice of law. His firm, Connors & Ferris, specializes in personal injury law, particularly focusing on Workers’ Comp cases.
Founding Connors & Ferris in 2001 with Tom Ferris presented its challenges, notably navigating the aftermath of 9/11 shortly after opening their doors. Despite these hurdles, Greg’s dedication to his clients and community remained steadfast. Balancing the demanding hours of a lawyer with fatherhood, Greg prioritized his sons’ activities while actively coaching youth sports teams—a testament to his commitment to both family and community.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to become a founding partner at Connors and Ferris law offices?
I was born and raised south of Rochester in a small town, Hornell New York. I then graduated from Alfred University studying political science and business. While growing up, I was very active in sports which continued through college at Alfred University where I played all 4 years as a defensive back on the football team.

Greg Connors stands out not only for his legal expertise but also for his unwavering dedication to clients and community. His journey from a small-town upbringing to a founding partner of a successful law firm reflects his enduring values of integrity, perseverance, and service—a
Growing up in a small town, then going to another small community like Alfred University, and again for law school, it really instilled in me the importance of strong values, being mindful and taking care of your family, friends, neighbors, and people in the community. Ultimately, the foundation of those values are what inspired Tom and I to create Connors & Ferris.
What motivated you to pursue a career in law?
Interestingly, I went to Alfred University to become a ceramic engineer which was short lived, recognizing quickly it was not my calling. Fortunately, Alfred had a lot of other academic majors which allowed me to transfer within the University to Political Science and Business.
As I was growing up, I had a tendency to debate my mom on the reasoning and rationale for the decisions she was making particularly when not allowing

me to do things in Hornell. Also, my parents’ friends would often say I would make a good lawyer.
I’ve always been the underdog in whatever I do so part of my attraction to a career in law was my desire to fight for similar underdogs who need a voice and someone on their side against the insurance companies, big businesses and government.
Given my interest in sports and being competitive, I was told by several people the practice of law to be the closest profession that provides you the same mindset of practice and preparation with a similar competitive game day feeling.
Where did you attend law school, and what is your area of specialization?
I went to a small Christian Law school in Western Ohio called Ohio Northern. It was the perfect fit for me after growing up in Hornell and going to a similar rural college like Alfred University. It allowed me to focus on my studies and not be distracted by the big city distraction. I like to tell the story...Alfred University had one stoplight and two bars and where I went to law school had two stoplights and one bar.
Our practice is focused on the personal injury space in particular Workers’ Comp.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your own law firm?
Tom and I opened the office on Monday, August 20, 2001. We thought our biggest challenge was going to be paying our bills & letting the community know we
were here to fight for them and protect their rights if they were injured while working. Little did we know 22 days later, our biggest challenge was going to be navigating through 9/11 with all the challenges and changes that occurred in our communities and society in general as well as how long the ripple effect throughout our economy and country lasted.
How do you balance the demanding hours of being an attorney with your responsibilities as a father?
With not much sleep…I must concede, I probably could have been better at balancing these demands but I always prioritized coordinating my work schedule around my two sons’ school and sports activities. My oldest is entering his senior year at Penn State majoring in Finance and Marketing while my youngest will be entering Alfred University in the fall as a freshman majoring in Mechanical Engineering. They recently shared with me over Father’s Day brunch they thought my level of involvement was just enough… not overbearing or overly involved, but always there with them.
I was fortunately always able to coordinate my schedule so I could coach the boys’ youth football, basketball and lacrosse teams while also handling cases, managing, and growing the business along with my responsibilities on the Board of several nonprofit organizations.
Can you share a memorable case that had a significant impact on your career?
The most memorable case that immediately pops into my head was several years ago. This soft-spoken
older woman called looking for some help because the insurance company had unjustifiably stopped paying the chiropractic care for her back injury.
After calling several attorneys, who said they were unable to do anything for her she called us. I simply asked her some other questions outside of what her purpose was for seeking assistance and identified the fact the insurance company had potentially not paid her the monetary benefits she was eligible to receive for over 10 years.
Shortly thereafter we went to court, and she was awarded the benefits she was legally eligible to receive all because I simply approached her issue from a different perspective. Having the experience to understand the impact an injury can have on one’s life, allowed me to have a different perspective to help secure her the chiropractic treatment she needed, along with the monetary payments she was eligible to be paid, but was never informed.
Not only was that extremely memorable to help her receive the monetary benefits she was eligible to receive, it was as equally fulfilling to later learn this wonderful, kind, soft-spoken grandmother used the money for her and her husband to go to Italy for the first time and experience a trip she had always dreamt of having, but never thought possible.
Who has been the most inspiring figure in your life, and why?
My parents have definitely been the most inspiring figures in my life. They both were the first college educated

generation in their families. In fact, both my parents obtained their masters degree in their respective fields of healthcare for my father and education for my mom.
Truly what is most inspiring and continues to be for me was their everyday demonstration of their work ethic and commitment to give back to the community where they lived. Both my parents were very active volunteering in the Hornell community supporting organizations that provided services to the community, even though none of us kids were necessarily participating or needing the services.
These values resonate with me and inspire me today along with their commitment, conscientiousness, and mindfulness of people in the community especially following my father’s untimely death in January 2001
What is your favorite aspect of practicing law?
My favorite aspect of being a lawyer is the impact we can have helping people and their families who have been impacted by an injury through no fault of their own. It also rang true there is no better profession to have the feeling of daily competition like being on a sports team, which I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of creating the Connors & Ferris team of lawyers and staff to help make a difference in peoples’ lives and protecting their rights as underdogs against the large well funded insurance companies and their attorneys.
How do you stay motivated and passionate about your work?
The person I am to my core is competitive, driven and passionate in everything I do or am involved in or I don’t do it. My love and passion to fight for every client because this is what’s most important to them keeps me motivated, focused, and driven. Another example of my passion is the commitment and focus for our beloved Buffalo Bills through many frustrating years and currently in these exciting times with Coach McDermott, Brandon Bean and Josh Allen.
What were the key factors that influenced your decision to expand to other cities? When did you decide to expand your practice to include offices in New York City, Buffalo, and Syracuse, in addition to Rochester? Interestingly, one of the factors is my friendship with the Hall of Fame Buffalo Bills quarterback, Jim Kelly. I had been serving on the Hunters Hope Board of Directors for a couple of years, making monthly and sometimes weekly trips to Buffalo in my role as a Member of the Board.
One day over lunch, Jim suggested I open an office out there since I was spending so much time in Buffalo. This suggestion started my wheels turning and inspired me to look into potential opportunities of expansion into Buffalo. After performing some market research, I identified an opportunity for which we then utilized the same analysis for our expansion into Manhattan and Syracuse offices.
What do you believe sets Connors and Ferris apart from other law firms in your field?
I believe what sets us apart from other firms in our space is the commitment and dedication of my partners and our core group of staff members who have been with us over the years. Our commitment and dedication to being the most prepared and responsive attorneys to our clients as well as our staff’s commitment, dedication and passion to helping others while also being mindful, compassionate, appreciative, as well as understanding of the stressful and sometimes debilitating circumstances, our clients find themselves.
How do you ensure that your firm maintains a high standard of client service across multiple locations? This is one of our bigger challenges having multiple locations, but our single highest priority in our training and management goals is staying focused, deliberate, intentional and consistent in our training as well as prioritizing our client experience as our top goal which includes the outcomes for our clients, responsiveness, compassion and empathy. This focus has allowed us to provide the consistency to our clients regardless of the location.
What advice would you give to young attorneys who aspire to start their own practice?
The advice I have offered to several young attorneys has been follow your passion and your values. Don’t do it for the money because as in our case, it took us over 5 years to get where we were before we started and the money will then influence decisions you make… be prepared for the lean years of revenue in the first couple of years. Do it because
“I’ve always been the underdog in whatever I do so part of my attraction to a career in law was my desire to fight for similar underdogs who need a voice and someone on their side against the insurance companies, big businesses and government.”
there is something you want to do different for someone else and then do it differently.
How do you stay current with changes and developments in your area of law? We belong to a New York State professional practice group which meets three times a year to discuss and go over changing developments, topics which keeps us current within our space as well as helping us understand what other clients are experiencing throughout the state. This professional group allows us to be at the forefront of these changes and evolutions which can have an immediate impact our clients’ benefits and rights.
What are your hobbies or activities that help you unwind and manage stress?
The thing I found most helpful for me to manage stress is working out every morning before work. I try to work out six to seven days a week for at least a half an hour every day to help me relieve, release and manage the stress that comes with being a lawyer as well as a business owner.
I also enjoy playing golf in the summer. In the fall going to Bills games with family and friends. I also enjoy skiing and traveling to warmer destinations which gives me something to look forward to in the winter.
Tell us something interesting about yourself that most people don’t know. Most people don’t know I almost went to Europe to play professional football
rather than go to law school. However, my father appropriately provided me the perspective my football career would most likely be short-lived, but the opportunity to continue my academic career in law school would last me a lifetime. He also pointed out it would be a much better investment of my time and money… Dad certainly knew best.
Connors & Ferris was founded in 2001 by Greg Connors and Tom Ferris with the simple principle injured workers deserve the best representation possible from the most prepared knowledgeable attorneys with a friendly and helpful support staff. Their experienced and dedicated staff has served over 10,000 individuals and families in New York State including Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and New York City.
MEET BILL MORAN
What drew you into the world of media and broadcasting?
I was drawn into the world of radio because of imagination! I remember hearing a Top 40 DJ in my hometown when I was 9 or 10 years old and he was building the world’s largest meatball in the parking lot of the radio station, it was all theater of the mind, but I could see it! To me that was amazing, I have always had a vivid imagination and love to paint pictures with words! I know the saying that sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. We have all learned that isn’t true, words can be powerful and the right words can paint amazing pictures!
What inspired you to start the Bill Moran Podcast, and what is it’s main focus?
What inspired me to start Billified: The Bill Moran Podcast was freedom! Freedom to say, discuss and interview whomever and whatever I believe is interesting. The main focus of Billified is infotainment, discussing any subject as objectively as possible no matter how uncomfortable the subject is. I believe humor makes things more palatable and helps bring us together in a disarming way. It feels like our society is very divided and many people say we need to have a discussion – insert the subject of the discussion here, but the problem I see is no one is having “the discussion.” Billified is the place for that discussion, anything goes.

I was on the radio for 33 years! I was drawn to voices I heard, who were these cool sounding, funny creative people and how do I get to play with them?!
Can you share some memorable experiences from your time on the radio?
One thing I learned early on was the connection listeners made with the voices they heard on the radio. When I was about 20 years old I was working Midnight to 6 AM on a rock station, WPDH, in my hometown for the Summer. I would get bored playing
people showed up with beer and hung out ‘till I told them they had to be gone when the morning show showed up at 5:30...so by 5 they all left!
Who have been some of your favorite guests on your podcast so far and why?
How long were you on the radio, and what initially sparked your interest in the field?
music, so I started something at 3 AM called who’s up and why? Other grave yard shifters and insomniacs must have been bored too because the phone lines would light up, they would tell me why they were up and we’d chat about anything and everything then I would play a request for them. I would get a call from some of the same people every night and some would even show up at the station and hang out with me. I would not recommend that, but I remember one warm August night before I headed back to college about 20
I am a very curious person and LOVE people’s stories. Occasionally I will do one on one’s with guests, just me and them. These are some of my favorite podcasts. I enjoy learning about what makes a person tick! Naming a favorite seems unfair because they have all been very interesting, but I will say one of my favorites was my younger brother. He is eight years younger than me and has had a very interesting life from flying planes before he had a drivers license, to biking cross country from Seattle to Virginia, running marathons, attending an Ivy league school and then Clown College, friends that include retired professional soccer players, musician and song writer Chris Trapper and acquaintances with the Bush family. I learned things I did not know! I have had many local successful people on from all walks of life and learning how they achieved what they have is interesting, there is a common thread with success and it is usually a desire and a belief that is so deep the person is unstoppable.
How did you come up with the name “Billified” for your podcast?
A dear friend suggested the name. I liked it, the name stuck in my brain and it meant verified, as though proved.
What are some of your favorite topics to discuss on your podcast?

BY NICOLE HEROUX WILLIAMS I PHOTOS BY NSP STUDIO
I think my favorite topic is the human condition and self improvement. I love talking with people and learning their story, how they got to where they are, obstacles they have overcome, what motivates them to keep moving forward. Our life is lived in our head, when we learn to control our thoughts and go for the better feeling thought in each moment, our lives are better and we can do more! This is easier said than done, but we must realize that nothing in this world has meaning, until we give it meaning. The meaning you give things shapes your world, which in turn means you have all the power, there truly is no assertion in this world, only attraction.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of hosting your own podcast?
The most rewarding aspect of hosting Billified is that it is all entirely mine. To have an idea and bring it to a physical reality and watch it grow and connect with listeners, knowing it has all, from topics, to guests, to advertisers, to marketing, started as an idea in my head is more than rewarding, it is incredible!
Can you describe some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced while transitioning from radio to podcasting?
The biggest challenge is also the one that is most rewarding, it is all on me. When I was on the radio my main responsibility was to prepare a daily show and as I transitioned from music to talk that became more challenging and I would over prepare so I was never caught with nothing. For the years that I did a talk morning show,
I would be up at 3 AM putting the finishing touches on that mornings show, I would leave the radio station by 11 and go to the Pittsford library and write and prepare for the next day until 1 or 1:30 – go home nap, be there when the kids got home, but sneaking into my office to do more prep and then after dinner until 9 or 10 PM. That was enough! The radio station had a sales team to sell and write the commercials, a marketing team to handle promotion and social media, and program directors to talk to the show as a whole. Now, it is all on me and that is way more challenging!
How do you prepare for your podcast episodes, especially when you have high-profile guests?
I am a very curious person and one of my favorite things to do is interviews. I prepare by trying to find out as much about the person as I can, then I will formulate questions from the information. I like to see where someone has come from, what did their parents do and who was the most influential person in their life, what drives them. I think preparation is often overlooked, we prepare more for a trip than for our job and that’s because we are excited about taking a trip and not very excited about our job, which is why people tell you to do what you love, I would add do what excites you!
What differences have you noticed between traditional radio broadcasting and podcasting??
There certainly are differences, but I think for the most part it is just a different delivery system. Language is a
big difference, there are words that are not allowed on traditional broadcasting and are in podcasting. Podcasting is on demand listening and things are “baked-in” meaning they are always there whether that be conversations, jokes or ads they are always there. In traditional broadcasting if you missed it, you missed it and it is out in the ether. From a content perspective podcasting allows for a wider range of ideas, topics and guests to be discussed more broadly and in depth. There are no time limits like traditional broadcasting.
In what ways has podcasting allowed you to connect with your audience differently than radio?
In both radio and podcasting you are looking to create a one on one relationship with the listener. I do much more on line with the podcast than I did in radio, not that radio can’t, but remember there was a marketing department. I interact with listeners more on line and have made some friends. I feel like podcast listeners are more invested and have a better idea of who I am. Why is that? Radio listeners listen on average for 8 minutes at a time, they may be fans, but most are not there from beginning to end. That is why you will hear good radio people re-set and say who they are talking to or what they are talking about because they know people are in and out. Podcast listeners seek you out, download and over 80% of podcast listeners listen to the entire podcast. You listen to a few episodes of Billified you will know A LOT about me and I love the messages, letters, gifts, and comments that come, everyone of them

has meaning because the listener that sent it is truly invested.
How do you stay current with trends and topics relevant to your listeners? I stay current with trends and topics by being curious. I read a lot, pay attention when I am out, talk to people away from the podcast about things and listen. I do a lot of listening when I am in a conversation it is the best way to learn. However, it is almost impossible today to not be somewhat aware of what is happening because of social media. Just look at the Hawk Tua, that has transcended social media!
What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own podcast? Do it. The barrier to entry is gone! Anyway can do a podcast. You can talk about whatever interest you and you can build a community around that. My advice is be consistent. If you are doing a weekly podcast then stick to that. Consistency is key and just like anything the more you do it, the better you will get. All of life is reps, the more you do something the better you get, no matter what it is.
Can you share a story or episode hat had a significant impact on you or your audience?
There are several episodes that come to mind as having a significant impact, like Tommy Brunett of Iron Smoke Distillery talking about jumping trains as a kid and how that adventurous soul has created an incredible, award winning business. Patrick Bernunzio, owner of Leo’s, having a mid-life moment and moving his family to Hawaii and
opening a bakery there for several years, showing that you can have whatever you want and make it work. However, the episode that had the most significant impact on me was episode 175, Dr. Rob Rice, PhD. Dr. Rice is the head of the Psychology Department at St. John Fisher University. Dr. Rice came on to talk about a book he wrote, but through our discussion we learned that we share many of the same philosophies about life. During that discussion I learned about Dr. Deep Singh and NADI water. Dr. Deep Singh is a dynamic doctor of Ayurveda medicine and the healing power of water, which is currently being studied at Harvard and MIT. I have since met Dr. Deep and become friends with Dr. Rice, this episode has had a profound impact on my life, I encourage you to listen to episode 175 it may be eye opening and at the very least thought provoking.
How do you handle controversial or sensitive topics on your podcast? Controversial or sensitive topics are different for everyone. I think we hit upon controversial topics as a matter of habit, that’s where the fun is. Throughout my career whenever I have thought I shouldn’t say or do that, I pause and then I think, “ohhh, but I should!” We are in a world that is very opinionated to the point some opinions are weaponized and others are afraid to express theirs. Remember an opinion by definition is half way between fact and fiction, and just because someone expresses theirs loudly does not mean you have to agree with it. That fear of being wrong or mocked has shut down discussions that may reveal we are not
that far apart on things. Humor and self deprecation are great tools to discuss something controversial, but also being open and listening, people want to be heard and matter. Sensitive topics again are open to interpretation, but being sensitive, non judgmental and listening are the best ways to handle sensitive topics. I love to bust balls, but never want to be mean. In all discussions there has to be a level of respect, not necessarily agreement. Any controversial or sensitive topic is handled with respect not always reverence, but avoiding controversial or sensitive topics makes things worse. One sensitive topic that I have been very open about over the years is having been sexually molested when I was 6 years old. Who would talk about that? ME! Because, it is real and unfortunately relatable. There may be a listener living with this secret that has impacted their life in ways you can not imagine, but hearing that they are not alone and how I have lived with this, how it impacted me, what has helped and what has not, may help them. By talking about this highly sensitive topic I may help people recognize signs to look for in kids and how to help them talk about it. I do say things that may surprise people like I know 7 ways to get out of a ticket you never thought of because I was molested, BUT, that disarms people and makes it easier to discuss.
What are the future goals for Billified: The Bill Moran Podcast?
The biggest goal for Billified is growth. My dream is to make Billified the go to place for infotainment and to also have a live show element. By that I

mean we have nights where we go to a place, perform stand up comedy and have a band play after while we hang out with listeners. Possibly even tape a podcast before all of that with a live audience. There are also other projects that I am working on and am very excited about. In my mind there are no limits and there are no rules! Try something and if it doesn’t work, try something different! But, never stop!
Outside of the podcast, what are some of your hobbies or interests?
Anyone who has ever started a business will tell you there is not much outside of that! However, we all need something to keep us sane and I have a few. I have three sons, two are in their early 20’s and the youngest is 14, but lives with his mother out of state. One of the older boys just graduated from an area college, I enjoy spending time with him when it works, but he will be heading to Grad School out of state in about a month. My oldest is moving to New York City which is excitingly nerve wracking to watch and the youngest is very similar to me, when we are together it is magical. I had been instructing boxing exercise classes, I love boxing workouts and working people out on focus mitts. Racing cars is a passion I dabble in, there is nothing like
heading into a turn at 120 mph, downshifting and hugging the turn, then punching it on the way out! Last Summer I drag raced for the first time, it was an all day event and I LOVED it. Hitting 140 mph in a quarter mile is exhilarating! I love things that make me feel alive and gets my adrenaline running! I hike and kayak in the warmer months and ski in the colder months. I also enjoy reading, discovering new music
to balance it all. We are looking at adjusting our recording schedule for exactly this reason, because while I ask rhetorically if there is such a thing as balance, there needs to be days you get to bed before 1 AM. I suppose the simple answer is I don’t balance it well, but it is a work in progress.
and wines!
How do you balance your personal life with the demands of producing a podcast? Is there such a thing as balance? I do not have much of a personal life, I live a lot of my life on the pod. It all blends for me. However, I do have a somethings I keep just for me and I have been seeking better ways
Lastly, what message would you like to convey to the readers of Rochester Woman Online about pursuing their passions? Go for it, because in life you never get it wrong and you never get it done! Why have people been telling us to do what we love or to follow our passion? Because it doesn’t feel like work! Yes, to do whatever your passion is and do it well will require tremendous focus, effort and time! I look at it this way. I only have so much time on the planet, do I want to spend it doing something I am o.k. with for someone else or do what I LOVE for me! It’s the reason I hang up my keys, there is only so much time and I do not want to spend it looking for my keys! Let’s GO!
Dan, please tell us a little bit about yourself and your background. How did you get started in bodybuilding?
I was born and raised here in Rochester NY. My father has been competing in Bodybuilding since I was born in the mid 80’s. I grew up (along with my brothers) watching him compete and thought it was awesome. I grew up a very skinny and lean kid. I never truly thought I would gain enough muscle to feel comfortable competing in a bodybuilding show, let alone be competitive.
Last year, you faced a significant health scare. Can you share what happened and how it has impacted your life?
I was going to my annual cardiologist appointment and fortunately my doctor requested for me to have an echocardiogram done. That scan found an aneurysm of the aortic root (where is connects to the heart). The average artery size is 3.5cm and anything over 5.5cm needs surgery to repair it. My aorta was at 6.6cm, which was causing my valve to leak severely as well. Two weeks after that appointment I had open heart surgery to remove the aneurysm and replace it with a graph. I was fortunate it ended up being a valve sparring procedure, so I did not need a valve replacement. This has impacted my life in many ways, but the most important one is not taking today for granted. Being more present and concentrating a bit more on the things that are most important to me. From the outside looking in I was a 37-year-old in perfectly good health, but I was essentially a ticking
time bomb, and I am very fortunate to be alive today.
What has your recovery process been like since then?
The first 3 weeks were the toughest. I only took pain pills for the first 3 days in the hospital and that was it. Of course, I had chest pain from
was also getting terrible night sweats every couple of hours in the middle of the night. I would traditionally drop 7-8lbs overnight every night. Once the night sweats stopped everything seemed to get better each day.
Are there any specific treatments or routines that have been particularly effective for you?
breaking my sternum but that was a given and honestly, not too bad. My blood pressure was low out of the gate and just sitting up would make me feel like I was going to pass out. My hemoglobin levels were low to a point that we were not sure if I was going to need a blood transfusion or not. I
There was nothing specific to my issues I can say 100% helped, but I maintained a low inflammatory diet (low to no gluten and no dairy). I mainly ate fruits, vegetables, meats and healthy fats, such as olive and coconut oil. I was able to bring my kids trick-or-treating 14 days after surgery and I was working again 20 days after surgery.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have encountered during your recovery journey?
PHOTOS BY ROBYN BATY PHOTOGRAPHY
I believe my biggest challenge in the recovery process was slowing down physically. I had never taken more than 1 week off from lifting weights since I was 14 years old. Not only could I not train but I was not allowed to pick up more than 10lbs. As you can imagine, this was a big adjustment!

You come from a family of very successful bodybuilders. How has this influenced your career and personal life?

With regards to my career, the discipline you must have physically and mentally to feel comfortable getting on stage makes any other demand in the workplace seem very manageable. After the physical and

mental preparing for a show, it seems that any other challenge at work or in your personal life seems very attainable.
Can you share some insights into the training and discipline required to achieve success in bodybuilding? Even when you are not prepping for an upcoming contest you still make adjustments in your day to insure you are eating an adequate amount of calories to promote muscle growth. You find time to get to the gym at least 4-5 days a week. During prep the discipline must increase to keep up with demands during this time. The training part makes up about 20% of the process. You want to make sure as you get closer to the contest and energy levels decrease that you push yourself but not to the point of getting injured. I usually will use machines a bit more at this time to help isolate the muscle and decrease the injury risk. With regards to the nutrition this is a 24/7 thing during prep and makes up 80% of your effort. You must have meals planned out ahead of time and calculate your macronutrients / calories daily. Once you get close to contest shape the physical and mental fatigue can truly test you.
What do you consider your biggest success during your bodybuilding career?
My biggest success was winning my natural Pro card at age 22 at the same show both my father and brother won their Pro cards at. Also, winning the Mr. Fitness Male Model search in NYC (men’s physique before that was ever a category), at age 20.
How has your family supported you throughout your recovery?
My family support was unbelievable. My wife was so helpful through everything and was at the hospital every day, from morning to night, or staying over if allowed. When we got home, she would make sure I was comfortable, get up with me during the night, and do all the “chauffeuring” of the kids, since I could not drive. My parents and brothers were a huge support in and out of the hospital, bringing food, jokes, and a welcome distraction. My in-laws watched our kids, making it possible for my parents to come up to the hospital, which was so appreciated. Can you share any specific instances where their support made a significant difference? My wife would make me a morning smoothie that I usually made for us at home and brought it up to the hospital every day. I developed a muscle spasm in my neck after surgery and both my wife and brother massaged my neck and shoulders for hours the first few days to help eliminate the pain I was experiencing from that. My mother and brother meal prepped multiple meals I requested because I did not feel the cafeteria food was going to help me feel any better. My father cut my grass for me to finish the season in the fall.
What role has mental health played in your recovery, and what strategies have you employed to maintain a positive mindset?
I have always been a “glass half full” type of person. Something like this can test you in many ways, and I have heard of people getting depressed after a major surgery like this. My goal was to get back to my normal life as quickly as I
could while still listening to my body and my doctors. After about 2 weeks of the night sweats, I remember being very frustrated, tired, weak, and sore with minimal answers as to the cause of them. Normally I would have gone and worked out or done something physical to help deal with the frustration, but this was the first time in my life I did not have that outlet to utilize. I remember venting to my wife about it and going for a walk.
Are there any specific dietary changes you have made during your recovery? I maintained the diet I was on of low inflammatory foods and kept my water and electrolyte intake high especially during the weeks I was experiencing night sweats to stay hydrated.
How important is nutrition in your overall health and fitness regimen?
As I said before, in my opinion nutrition makes up 75-80% of a healthy regimen. I always say you can’t outwork a bad diet.
What advice would you give to someone who is facing a similar health challenge?
I would recommend taking each day at a time, listen to your health care providers, and give yourself grace. The mental and physical process will not be easy, but usually each day gets better in the recovery process. Also, I would recommend using it as a stepping-stone to a better, more fulfilled life. Whether that means starting a healthier lifestyle or being more present with loved ones.
Can you discuss the importance of community and social support in overcoming personal health struggles?
“When we got home, she would make sure I was comfortable, get up with me during the night, and do all the “chauffeuring” of the kids, since I could not drive.”
Community and social support are truly so important! Close friends, neighbors, and family were continuously cooking and sending us cards, meals, and encouraging messages of support and well wishes, which made life much easier for my wife and kids.
What are some of your plans for the future, both in terms of bodybuilding and your personal life?
I would truly like to compete again either in bodybuilding or Men’s Physique. I also plan to continue promoting drug free bodybuilding events here in Rochester starting again in 2025. As for my personal life, my wife and I plan to continue taking our kids to different places and just truly enjoying life and treat today like there is no tomorrow.
How do you balance the demands of training and competing with other aspects of your life, such as family and work?
I make lifting and eating healthy one of my priorities all the time. With that said, I try to lift and prep food while my kids are sleeping or at school. Also, I started to build a home gym when my wife was pregnant with our first child and have been adding to it ever since. This gave me the most flexibility to make sure I was able to get workouts in. My kids come out to the garage with me sometimes which I think is good for them to see and they do their little workouts as well now!
Are there any upcoming projects or competitions you are particularly
excited about?
My family and I have been promoting natural bodybuilding shows for over 15 years now and due to Covid and my health we have only hosted a few shows in the last few years. We hope to promote another in 2025. As far as competing, I have nothing set as of now. I just want to make sure I listen to my body and only start prepping if I feel good enough to do so.
How do you stay motivated on days when you’re not feeling your best?
For me it is non-negotiable. Unless I am sick with flu-like symptoms, working out is something that is part of me and my day. If I do not feel like doing it, then those are the times I am okay just getting a shorter lift in, or not taking my workouts to the limit. For me it becomes a mental win in those situations, and I always feel accomplished.
What legacy do you hope to leave in the bodybuilding community?
I am not sure if Legacy is the right word but if the name ‘Iatomasi’ is mentioned within the bodybuilding community I hope it is followed by that we were passionate about the entire process of bodybuilding. Also, that we were good advocates / promoters of natural bodybuilding and always put 100% into all aspects of the process (Diet, training and posing).
Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers about your journey, your recovery, or your goals for the future?
Considering my lifestyle and never
using hard drugs or steroids, I never expected to need a surgery like this especially before age 40. I believe everything happens for a reason and you just need to play the hand you were dealt and understand things can always be worse. I am a better person today than I was before I went through this surgery. I just think people should be grateful for the opportunity to be able to battle through the hard things in life which in turn makes you appreciate the pleasures in life that much more.
“ From the OUTSIDE looking in I was a 37-year-old in perfectly GOOD HEALTH, but I was essentially a ticking time bomb, and I am VERY FORTUNATE to be alive today. ”

Brett, tell us a little bit about yourself and what made you decide to go into yoga, especially in such a female-dominated field. I grew up in the Adirondack mountain region and I have a Bachelors of Science in Hospitality from Plattsburgh State. Most of my background/experience is in Food and Beverage Management. The grind and hustle of the service industry brought me to my first yoga studio. I found other LGBTQ+ yogis in that community. It made me feel safe to attend class and work on myself. Fast forward to now, I’m a certified Yoga, Meditation, and Reiki Instructor. Bringing the Rochester community together through the power of connection.
What inspired you to create “Yoga with Brett” and how did you become known as “your yoga bestie”? I wanted to create a bigger connection to the city of Rochester. I am passionate

about creating friendships through the practice of yoga. I believe that when you take a class with me, I feel like your bestie. I like to make sure all participants in my classes, feel welcomed.
Can you share some of your core strengths and how they contribute to your practice and teaching of yoga? I believe that hard work and dedication to ones yoga practice creates consistency. From there, the teachings become natural to share. I have been practicing yoga consistently since 2013. And teaching yoga since 2016. Since 2016, I’ve taught over 5,000 hours of yoga to the greater Rochester area and New York State.
What are some of the fun and exciting things you have coming up in your yoga career or personal life? 2024 has brought a lot of different yoga events to my plate. I’m so excited to work on bigger projects like yoga retreats, workshops, 200 hour teacher trainings, and events like Flower City Yoga League. I have taught at the New York State yoga festival the past few seasons with Hikyoga at Letchworth State Park.I’m also looking at hosting international yoga retreats.
Why do you believe yoga is important for people and their overall wellness?
I think yoga is important for peoples overall wellness because it affects the mind, the body and the spirit. It’s a whole body experience. Experiencing the true magic of yoga will enhance
your physical and mental well-being, while transforming your life as you find balance, harmony and inner peace.
What is your favorite style of yoga to practice and why does it resonate with you?
Some of my favorite styles of yoga are hot, heated power Vinyasa yoga, and a slow flow, Yin yoga practice. I find these yoga styles help release stress,
Who has inspired you the most on your yoga journey and what impact have they had on you?
The yoga community has inspired me the most on my yoga journey. The support, friendships and relationships I have created have been so amazing. I get to watch people transform their lives right in front of my eyes. It keeps me motivated and inspired in my practice and teaching. It keeps me coming back to my mat everyday.
anxiety, depression, and help boost my overall well-being and mindset. During Covid I switched from doing power Vinyasa yoga multiple times per week, to a more slow paced yin-based yoga practice. Yin yoga resonated with me because I had the time to slow down and dive into what I needed to reflect on at that time. I also have been working on Myofascial release and trigger point therapy techniques, which I have come to fall in love with.
If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would that be and why?
Caring. I’ve always loved working with people. My background is in the service industry. Even as a kid I’ve always worked with people. I care about everyone I come into contact with and am determined to leave them in a better place than when I found them. At the end of my yoga classes, you’ll hear me say, “if you need a hug, high five, chest bump, or a piggy back ride to your car, I’ve got you”!
How do you handle the challenges of being a male instructor in a predominantly female field?
I would say I have to deal with minimal challenges in this area. Because this field is predominantly female, it opens up opportunity and expansion for something different, which may be a male instructor. I have been embraced fully since I started teaching.
What has been your most rewarding experience since starting “Yoga with

Flower City Yoga League. I created a fun yoga league that has connected all of the communities of yoga that I have been a part of since 2013. It has created strong friendships and connections with people that may not have met unless they signed up for this league. It has created a fun group of leaders that I get to work with every week. I have learned so much by creating and leading, and
I cannot wait for season 2 to start in the fall!
What advice would you give to other men who are considering taking up yoga?
Sign up for a class, show up and keep going back when it gets hard. Yoga increases everyone’s flexibility and lifelong movement. You learn some big lessons about yourself through the
practice of yoga. You get to learn so much about who you are and you get inspiration for who you want to be!

TALKING WITH DOMINIC PIACENTINI
“Six or seven years ago, if you had shown me a snapshot of my life now and the kinds of things I currently engage with, I would have said something like, “You’re crazy. That’s not me!””
Can you start by telling us a little bit about yourself? What is your background, and how does it compare to what you are currently doing? I say this so often now, but it’s true and so relevant to my journey. Six or seven years ago, if you had shown me a snapshot of my life now and the kinds of things I currently engage with, I would have said something like, “You’re crazy. That’s not me!”
My career journey began in education, where I spent many years working in the Rochester City School District (RCSD) in a variety of roles ranging from teacher, coach, and administrator. During that first decade of my career in urban education I had many challenging and profoundly rewarding experiences. These “boots on the ground” experiences helped shape my expertise in leadership, program implementation, and professional development. Most importantly I learned the ability to connect with individuals of all kinds and was inspired to promote positive change.
My passion for Restorative Practices began during my time working in the RCSD and has since become an integral part of my daily life. My unwavering commitment to these principles has not only transformed my approach to education, but also profoundly influenced how I interact with the world. I now seek out opportunities to share these transformative practices with others, in hopes of enriching the lives of individuals and organizations alike. This deep-seated belief in the power of restorative principles underscores my role as an advocate and mentor in the field. In addition to my work in Restorative Practices, I am a holistic wellness advocate, emphasizing
the importance of physical, mental, and spiritual practices for personal growth. I not only engage in these disciplines for my own well-being, but also incorporate them into my professional endeavors ranging from consulting, facilitating training sessions, events, and wellness retreats. Because I have found such great benefit from this work on my own personal journey I feel compelled to share my approach to wellness with others.
Some people have described me as a “serial entrepreneur” because I am involved with so many various endeavors. While studying as an undergrad in college, I began a catering business. Over the years, this grew from working out of my parents’ kitchen and eventually the three kitchens in my first home, to opening a brick and mortar catering business with a longtime friend. Battatini’s Catering just recently celebrated a ten year anniversary. I was a founding partner and the main chef for this business for the majority of the first five years. During these years, I was beginning to dabble in property management and investing in rental properties, running the catering business, and climbing up the career ladder in education. I began to feel the inevitable burnout and had to make the tough decision to step away from the catering business when I accepted a promotion as a director in the RushHenrietta Central School District. You would think this would have slowed me down, but I quickly began furthering my involvement in real estate investing and eventually partnered with another friend to create a new business, Juice Properties LLC. My involvement in real estate flipping properties and managing rentals eventually led me to get my real
estate license. I am now a realtor with local brokerage, ReMax Plus. Additionally, in the fall of 2023 I founded R4 Consulting, “Real Restoration for Real Results.” Through R4 Consulting, I offer my clients a wealth of experience and expertise in Restorative Practices, mindfulness, teambuilding, community development, leadership, conflict resolution, and strategic planning. My commitment to making a meaningful impact on individuals and organizations is at the core of R4’s mission.
Career Transition: What inspired you to transition into the field of real estate and become a realtor?
I was traveling back from a friend’s bachelor party in Mexico. Some of the guys in our group randomly had our seats bumped up to first class by the airline for the flight home. During the flight, I connected with one of the guys on the trip that had previously just been an acquaintance due to our shared friends. He happened to be a realtor and at some point during the flight home, sitting in first class seats that I otherwise couldn’t have afforded, we decided that I would sell my current home, which I loved, and use the proceeds to purchase a multi-family property. I would live in one unit and rent the other(s). A few months after returning from Mexico, we executed the plan. I sold my first home and used the proceeds to purchase a three unit property in the South Wedge. Within a year, I had already purchased and renovated a second multi-family home. I was now hooked. Jason, the relator and acquaintance on the flight home from Mexico had become a fast friend and I suppose he saw something in me that I hadn’t necessarily seen in myself. He proposed that we partner and

began investing in properties together. Soon after we formed Juice Properties LLC. From there it was only a natural progression that I too earned my realtor’s license. I am now in my second year as a licensed real estate professional and continue to grow my business.
Health Journey: You’ve had quite a health journey over the past few years. Could you share some details about that journey and what it has entailed?
I grew up as an athlete and even after playing competitive sports was no longer an option due to injury I was very much someone who prioritized physical activity and exercise. Ever since young adulthood working out and being physically active was always a priority in my life. Aside from a few sport related surgeries in high school, I had considered myself to be really “healthy”, at least physically. Then, at some point in my early thirties I began to experience a great amount of stress, mostly related to my work in the field of urban education. I, like many others in similar situations, had been experiencing difficulty accepting the harsh realities that so many of our children in the city of Rocheter face in their lives and witnessed the manner in which that played out in schools.
This coupled with a lifetime of having a proclivity for worry and pessimism, was not an ideal combination. The stress began translating into physical reactions. My breaking point came one day at dismissal, while working as an assistant principal. Multiple fights had broken out in the hallway. I and a few other staff were trying fiercely to break up the fights and clear the area to prevent any serious injury and restore safety. As I was in the mix, shouting and working
through the crowd that had formed I felt a pain in my left upper chest and neck. I remember thinking to myself “Am I having a heart attack? No way. I’m way too young and too healthy for that!” Thankfully, two staff members and friends, a counselor and a Center for Youth Advocate noticed me, grabbed me and got me into one of their offices.
They were able to calm me down and eventually the pain subsided. Each of these two men were of the best I have ever had the privilege of working with in regards to their ability to work with and positively engage with our youth. One of them had a similar experience earlier that school year which resulted in him being taken away in an ambulance and missing several weeks of work. The point was he could relate and recognized what was happening to me too. These two men spoke calm and strength into me in that moment, but they also implored me to find a way to better manage the stress for fear of what might result if I were to be out of work for any extended period of time. It was in the aftermath of that moment that I made a decision to explore other means of stress reduction, besides simply being physically active.
Over the next few months and even years I started to dip my toes into practices such as yoga and meditation. I ebbed and flowed with these practices for a bit, but if I’m being honest with myself, I hadn’t truly made a substantial transformation yet. Just as that one afternoon at dismissal was a pivotal moment in recognizing the need for change in mindset and even lifestyle, in the early winter of 2020 I experienced another pivotal moment of my wellness journey. My best friend Mike, had told me about an episode of a
documentary he had watched about some European guy from the Netherlands that was doing crazy things like submerging himself in ice for obscene amounts of time, running marathons barefoot in nothing but shorts in the Arctic Circle, and leading groups of elderly and ill to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. I too watched the episode and became very intrigued. Mike and I both began seeking out more information about the man, Wim Hof, watching podcasts and other documentaries that were on the internet. We both started attempting to apply what we were learning. Our first attempt at exposing ourselves to the cold like our new hero Wim Hof was laughable. I think we each lasted less than 45 seconds, fully clothed, walking barefoot into a shallow creek near Mike’s house.
To our credit we were not deterred. Maybe only a few weeks later, we were hiking in Stoneybrook on a cold winter’s day with temps into the teens. We had been learning about the scientifically verified and documented benefits of Wim Hof’s method, practicing our breathing technique, and building up our nerves. On that day, after hiking in the cold for over two hours, we found a spot in the rushing creek that wasn’t frozen over. There was a hole where super cold water was rushing past. That day we submerged in the creek for almost eight minutes and had to army crawl up an incy embankment with legs that were frozen numb and hard to move. In hindsight, it maybe wasn’t the brightest idea, but I’m so thankful we did it. I now understood the immense power of the practice feeling more alive, yet more calm and clear than I ever had felt in my life. From that day on, it was
“Over the next few months and even years I started to dip my toes into practices such as yoga and meditation.” {
like a whole new world had opened up to me. The more I explored the Wim Hof method the deeper I dove into other wellness practices like yoga and mindfulness. I intensified the frequency of my spiritual and wellness practices, seeking out opportunities to learn and experience more and more. Not too long after, I fought off the “imposter syndrome” and started creating spaces to offer what I had learned to others. I now regularly take out groups of people to guide them through the Wim Hof method and even host wellness events and retreats alongside other local wellness practitioners. I can’t imagine anyone who has known me for some period of time, not recognizing the profound changes that have happened in me as a result of embarking on this ever expanding journey of wellness and exploration.
Key Successes: Can you tell us about some of your major successes in your professional and personal life?
In short, I feel fortunate to be surrounded by a wonderful family (two loving parents and three amazing siblings) and an ever expanding circle of friends. Professionally, I’m thankful for the opportunity to engage in career pathways centered around serving others. Personally, I’m proud of the growth I’ve achieved through deliberate efforts, especially over the past several years. Honestly, this is a difficult question for me to answer, as I rarely take the time to reflect, acknowledge my achievements, or celebrate my successes. Maybe I should start doing so more often!
Challenges Faced: What are some of the significant challenges you have faced along the way, and how did you overcome them?
I’d say the biggest challenge I’ve faced has been overcoming my natural tendencies towards worry, pessimism, and selfjudgment. Over the past several years, I’ve made significant progress in this area. This personal growth has been the result of a deliberate mindset shift, fueled by reading, listening to podcasts, and engaging in wellness practices like mindfulness, cold exposure, and yoga. Recently, I discovered the “parable of the Chinese farmer,” which beautifully illustrates an Eastern perspective on the relationship between suffering and peace of mind. (I recommend looking it up on Google or Instagram; it’s worth a listen.) Nowadays, more often than not, and certainly more than my younger self, I can take a deep breath and embrace what is, with curiosity about what might come next. I’ve learned to trust that things are working out in my favor, even when it doesn’t necessarily seem that way. While I still occasionally revert to old habits, this approach, combined with a regular gratitude practice, has profoundly transformed me.
Proud Achievements: Out of all your accomplishments, what are you most proud of?
I take great pride in my relentless pursuit of self-improvement, constantly striving to better myself and help those around me improve their circumstances. Throughout my journey, I’ve always seen myself as a good person, but I’m especially proud of the person I am becoming and the dedication I’ve shown to my growth and development. It often surprises people when I reveal that I’m naturally introverted and that I haven’t always maintained a positive mindset. Despite this, I have pushed myself to embrace change and seek out new experiences.
I recognize that there is still immense room for growth in many areas of my life. However, I am genuinely proud of my intentional decision to step out of my comfort zone, time and time again. I actively seek out opportunities to challenge myself, whether it’s through personal development workshops, engaging in difficult conversations, or taking on leadership roles that force me to adapt and learn. These efforts have exposed me to new ways of thinking and interacting with the world, allowing me to develop a more nuanced and positive outlook on life. By persistently placing myself in uncomfortable situations, I’ve been able to grow in ways I never thought possible, and this ongoing journey of self-improvement is something I take great pride in.
R4 Wellness and Consulting: What is R4 Wellness and Consulting, and what inspired you to start this venture?
R4 Wellness & Consulting was born out of my growing passion for empowering individuals and organizations to flourish through a unique blend of restorative practices, mindfulness, and socialemotional learning (SEL) principles. I believe that strong relationships, built on a foundation of social and emotional intelligence, are the cornerstone of any successful team, department, or organization. It has become my goal to help cultivate and rebuild those bonds in collaboration with others.
What sets R4 apart is a deep understanding of adult learners and team dynamics. I have extensive experience, particularly in adult education, which allows me to tailor the R4 approach to specific clients’ needs and the unique perspectives of everyone involved. I

take the time to listen and understand an organization’s goals and challenges, fostering a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and heard. This foundation of trust is instrumental in building strong teams and effective leadership.
Mindfulness and relationship building are woven into the very fabric of my approach. I believe “you can’t restore what does not exist,” and that’s why there is an emphasis on building genuine connections from the ground up. I incorporate mindfulness practices to cultivate self-awareness, empathy, and present-moment focus, all essential for fostering strong relationships within your teams. My approach integrates SEL principles to further equip your team members with the social and emotional skills they need to navigate challenges, collaborate effectively, and build positive working relationships.
R4 offers a wide range of services designed to enhance your organization, including team building, leadership development, strategic planning, restorative practices training, and conflict resolution services. Additionally, I can organize restorative retreats and events that promote reflection, team bonding, and growth.
My experience in education and adult learning translates into conflict resolution services as well. R4 Wellness & Consulting mediation utilizes proven techniques to address conflicts within professional settings, emphasizing empathy, active listening, and constructive dialogue to find solutions that work for everyone. What truly distinguishes R4 Wellness & Consulting is a commitment to a holistic approach. Restorative practices
are not a program or a one-time fix; it’s a core philosophy, a way of being that prioritizes relationships and respect. I incorporate mindfulness practices to further reflect this philosophy and believe this approach, coupled with SEL principles, leads to sustainable solutions and measurable results for our clients.
Restorative Practices: What does it mean to be a master practitioner of restorative practices and holistic well-being?
In truth, I’m reluctant to call myself a “master practitioner” because it sounds too egotistical. Instead, I’d say I have over a decade of experience with restorative practices, a contemporary approach to conflict resolution and community building that has deep roots in the traditions of many indigenous cultures. These practices focus on healing, reconciliation, and restoring harmony within communities rather than on punishment. Many indigenous justice systems prioritize the community’s wellbeing, emphasizing the importance of relationships and interconnectedness. These restorative practices are often intertwined with spiritual beliefs and rituals, involving ceremonies to cleanse, heal, and restore balance. Like many other advocates and practitioners, I endeavor to utilize this approach in my personal and professional life.
Over the years, I’ve implemented proactive community-building strategies, designed and led numerous trainings for adults and students, conducted comprehensive program evaluations and developed action plans, facilitated both small and large group mediations with students and staff, and consulted on creating restorative systems and programs.
Additionally, I have organized and coorganized wellness events and retreats for several years, always incorporating restorative practices into each experience. This work transcends being merely a program or curriculum; it’s a way of being rooted in indigenous knowledge and grounded in community-based, prosocial relationships. It’s deeply ingrained in me, and although I still have my shortcomings, I strive to live this approach to life every single day.
Real Estate Market Trends: What trends are you currently seeing in the real estate market, and how are you adapting to them?
It is no secret that the real estate market has been a bit of a roller coaster ride in recent years, and the upcoming NAR settlement (which goes into effect later this summer) adds yet another twist. Interest rates are up, finding a house is often tougher, and bidding wars are common. But don’t worry, deals are still happening!
Whether you’re buying or selling, knowledge is power in this changing market. With the right resources and a skilled real estate agent by your side, you can find success. Now, more than ever, an agent’s expertise can be your secret weapon. As the landscape of the market changes, I focus on being flexible, learning, and having a solutions-based approach.
Balancing Roles: How do you balance your roles between being a realtor and a wellness consultant?
In addition, I also work full-time as a Director in the central office of a local school district, while also managing several rental properties and flip projects.
“This
personal growth has been the result of a deliberate mindset shift, fueled by reading, listening to podcasts, and engaging in wellness practices like mindfulness, cold exposure, and yoga.”
My secret? Coffee and espresso!
I’ve always been good at time management, heavily relying on todo lists, which I still write down in a small flip book planner. I also use sticky notes and frequently text or email myself reminders and ideas. My wellness practices are equally important. I make it a priority to set aside time each day for various physical, mental, and spiritual activities. These practices help me stay grounded, focused, and serve as healthy outlets to prevent and manage the stress of a busy schedule.
Client Relationships: What is your approach to building and maintaining relationships with your clients?
Simply put, my approach is to be true to myself, more core values, and to be as genuine as possible when interacting with clients and potential clients. As someone who’s been involved with a few different types of businesses and clients over the years, one thing that I consistently come back to is what I now call my “golden thread”, the idea of using a restorative approach with all of my interactions. To me that equates to seeing the human side of doing business by prioritizing positive interactions and serving as calming or grounding presence if and when needed.
I’m currently reading the book, Attracting Perfect Customers: The Power of Strategic Synchronicity, which was suggested to me by my friend and coach during a recent session. This book aims to empower business owners to attract their ideal clients by seamlessly integrating their core values into an authentic approach to marketing. By fostering genuine connections and aligning strategically,
we can build lasting and meaningful customer relationships.
Personal Wellness Practices: Can you share some of the personal wellness practices you follow to maintain your health and well-being?
I tend to wake early and I begin each day with intention and focus on setting myself up for success. Over the years, my morning routine has grown to include various activities that support my physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. By being the best version of myself, I can better serve those I encounter throughout the day. I enjoy making to-do lists and find satisfaction in crossing off completed tasks. However, as my morning routine expanded, listing each activity became overwhelming if I couldn’t complete them all, which contradicted my goal of starting the day positively. To address this, I now simply write “AM Routine” at the top of my list. Whether I manage to do all six components or just one, I can still check it off and feel accomplished. My daily morning wellness practices typically include gratitude journaling, brief meditation, breath work, a cold plunge, and some form of exercise.
If I’m unable to complete these practices in the morning before work, I do my best to revisit them later in the afternoon or evening. Additionally, I take time to read and listen to informative podcasts, often on topics like biohacking, manifestation, mindsets, and self-improvement. There’s so much wisdom out there, both new and ancient, and I am curious about it all. Recently, I’ve rekindled a childhood passion for sketching and drawing. As a child, if my sketches didn’t capture the likeness of the subject, I would get frustrated and anxious. Now, I
find sketching to be a form of active meditation, reflecting the mindsets and skills I’ve been working on. If my drawing isn’t coming out as well as I prefer, I simply walk away for a while without judgment and revisit the task later. Almost every time, the end product is improved, and my mood is better. I also enjoy being active in nature whenever possible. This can involve a wide range of activities as I’m always eager to try something new. I often hike in all four seasons, especially near water such as creeks, streams, and waterfalls. Nature has proven healing abilities, and the presence of water enhances this effect. Whether I’m taking an outdoor yoga class, kayaking, paddle boarding, or diving into waterfalls, I try to make nature the backdrop of my wellness routine as often as possible.
Future Goals: What are your future goals, both in real estate and in your wellness practice?
I continually set new goals and strive for personal and professional growth. In real estate, my objectives are twofold. First, I aim to expand my business as a real estate salesperson, assisting clients with their buying and selling needs while adhering to my core values. I understand that buying a home can be one of the most significant and stressful decisions for many adults, and I strive to provide unwavering support throughout their journey. wellness consulting business, extending my reach by working with individuals, organizations, and teams both locally and beyond. I will continue offering retreats and events that allow people to explore new wellness modalities, connect with others, and experience transformative practices. A significant goal of mine is to merge my real estate and wellness ventures by purchasing a waterfront property. This property will serve as a vacation home for my family and friends and as a venue for wellness retreats I will host.
Advice for Aspiring Professionals: What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career similar to yours, balancing between real estate and wellness consulting?
That’s an excellent question and perhaps the most difficult to answer. My journey has spanned various fields, including education, catering, real estate, and wellness consulting, with numerous ups and downs along the way. It’s been an unusual blend of career and entrepreneurship, not something I
had always planned. Over time, I’ve become more adept and comfortable with changing directions and exploring new passions as they arise. I suspect more changes are on the horizon, and the prospect of new opportunities excites me. My best advice for anyone pursuing their career goals is to remain open to new possibilities, embrace both successes and failures, work diligently towards your passions, and stay true to yourself and your values.

At Press Gurwitz, we specialize in crafting fragrances that harmoniously complement an individual’s essence, accentuating captivating dimensions of their identity through olfactory artistry.

This legacy of craftsmanship and secrecy has evolved into a modernday family business, where tradition meets innovation.
Our process of creating unique fragrances for both body and home begins with meticulous research and inspiration drawn from nature, art, and personal experiences. Each fragrance is carefully formulated using high-quality ingredients, undergoes rigorous testing, and is refined to embody the essence of freedom and soul that defines our brand. perfumery, a dedication to quality, and a commitment to honoring our heritage while embracing the future. We invite you to experience the essence of our brand and discover fragrances that resonate with your soul.
Victor, tell us a little about yourself and your family-owned business, Press Gurwitz Perfumerie.
Hello! I’m Victor, Director of Product Operations and Development and partner at Press Gurwitz Perfumerie. Our brand is a family endeavor, established in 2019. We are based in Marathon, NY and we craft fragrances that harmoniously complement an individual’s essence, accentuating captivating dimensions of their identity through olfactory attraction(s?).. We believe in the power of family and traditions, and this is the essence which permeates everything we do.
What inspired you to start this incredible business, and how did you come up with the name Press Gurwitz Perfumerie?
We decided to launch the Press Gurwitz brand during the last season of the famous show Schitt’s Creek, in 2019. Opportunities during the pandemic were limited. The other alternative was to apply for unemployment. A long-time friend and co-founder of the Perfumerie, Alexadra Asmus, who is also our creative director and the main nose behind the curated collection, invited me to join the business as product operations specialist. I decided to join Press Gurwitz Perfumerie in 2020. Press Gurwitz is my partner’s family name, like Schitt or Folker. His ancestors were alchemists in Bohemia, making
and selling perfumes and tinctures for secret societies. Back then, to survive and prosper, they operated in secret. Today, it is still a family business, thus, we use a family name to honor the tradition.
Can you walk us through the process of creating unique fragrances for both body and home?
Our process begins with research and inspiration from nature, art, and personal experiences. Every product development journey begins with research of industry trends, popular brands, and best-selling scents on the market. We then move to the formulation stage, where we carefully select high-quality ingredients. Each fragrance undergoes rigorous testing and refinement to ensure it embodies the essence of freedom and soul that defines our brand. For home products, we make sure the scents enhance the ambiance of any space, making it a cohesive part of a person’s lifestyle.
In what ways do you believe your products set you apart from competitors in the industry?
Press Gurwitz Perfumerie stands out due to our dedication to uniqueness and quality. Our products are more than just fragrances; they are an extension of one’s personality and environment. We focus on creating scents that are not only alluring but also deeply personal. Our family-centric approach ensures that every product carries our legacy and passion, setting us apart in an industry often dominated by mass-produced items.
How do the different generations of your family contribute to the development of your products and brand?
Each generation brings a unique perspective and skill set to the table. Our elders provide wisdom and a deep understanding of traditional perfumery techniques, while the younger members infuse modernity and innovative ideas. This blend of tradition and innovation allows us to create products that resonate across different age groups and preferences, ensuring our brand remains timeless and relevant.
The look and branding of your business are extremely professional and highend. How did you conceptualize and create this image?
We wanted our brand to reflect the elegance and sophistication of our products. From the outset, we focused on creating a visual identity that exudes luxury and refinement. This involved careful selection of packaging materials, color schemes, and design elements that align with our brand values. Our goal was to create an image that appeals to the senses and conveys the quality and thoughtfulness of our products. All design and marketing were created by our own team.
What is your personal favorite scent from your collection, and what makes it special to you?
One of my personal favorites is our signature fragrance! This scent embodies the essence of our brand—it’s a complex blend of floral and woody notes that evokes a sense of liberation and selfexpression. It holds a special place in my heart because it was the first fragrance we created as a family, symbolizing our collective journey and commitment to our craft. It was also the latest addition to our collection- fragrance number 15

How do you source and incorporate natural elements into both your fragrances and packaging designs?
We prioritize sustainability and ethical sourcing in all aspects of our production. Our ingredients are cruelty-free and are carefully selected from trusted suppliers who share our commitment to quality and environmental responsibility. We incorporate natural elements not only in our fragrances but also in our packaging, using recyclable materials and eco-friendly designs to minimize our ecological footprint as much as we can. We use only glass bottles and paper, minimizing the use of plastics throughout the process.
Do you offer wholesale accounts for spas and other establishments that might want to carry your products? Yes, we do offer wholesale accounts for spas, boutiques, and other establishments! We believe that our products can enhance the customer experience in a vast array of settings, and we are always open to partnerships that align with our brand values. Interested parties can reach out to us directly to discuss wholesale opportunities.
What challenges have you faced in running a family-owned business, and how have you overcome them?
Running a family-owned business comes with its unique set of challenges, such as balancing personal and professional relationships while ensuring everyone’s voice is heard. We’ve overcome these challenges
by fostering open communication and maintaining a shared vision for the brand. Regular family meetings and a collaborative approach help us navigate any obstacles and continue to grow together. Raising the brand to a national level will take fundraising from outside sources, possibly inviting new partners. We will be preparing for this transition for the next couple of years.
How do you stay current with trends in the fragrance industry while maintaining the unique identity of your brand?
We are still a young and emerging brand in the niche perfume market. Staying current involves continuous research and a keen eye on industry trends. We attend industry events, engage with fragrance communities, and stay informed about consumer preferences. We take courses and master classes from famous perfumers and art directors of famous perfume houses. At the same time, we remain true to our brand’s unique identity by integrating trends in a way that complements our core values and aesthetic. This balance allows us to innovate while preserving the essence of Press Gurwitz Perfumerie.
Can you share a memorable story or anecdote about a significant milestone or event in the history of Press Gurwitz Perfumerie?
One memorable milestone was the launch of our first flagship store. It was a culmination of years of hard work and dedication. The opening event was a celebration of our journey and a testament to passion for perfumery.
Seeing our vision come to life in a physical space, and witnessing the positive reception from all of our customers, was an incredibly rewarding experience.
How do you ensure the quality and consistency of your products across different batches?
Quality and consistency are paramount to us. We have strict quality control measures in place, from ingredient sourcing to the final product. Each batch undergoes thorough testing to ensure it meets our high standards. We also document and review every step of the production process to maintain consistency and address any variations promptly.
What role does sustainability play in your business practices and product development?
We prioritize sustainability and ethical sourcing in all aspects of our production. Our packaging is recyclable, we use glass and paper where possible, minimizing the use of plastics. Our ingredients are carefully selected from trusted suppliers in Europe, where quality control standards are exceptionally high. This ensures that we maintain the highest levels of quality and environmental responsibility in our products. By incorporating natural elements into our fragrances, we aim to create products that bring lasting joy and satisfaction to our customers.
One of the developments we are working on is a natural perfume line, free of any synthetic materials.
“We believe in the power of family and traditions, and this is the essence which permeates everything we do.”
Looking ahead, what are your future plans for Press Gurwitz Perfumerie? Are there any new products or expansions on the horizon? Excited about the future of Press Gurwitz Perfumerie! In 2022-2023, we introduced 20+ new products and designs. Enhancing our R&D in 2024 to unveil 10+ new products
and packaging designs. Our goal is continuous innovation, aiming to introduce 100% natural fragrances by 2025, offering freshness to our customers. This year, we welcomed dedicated sales reps expanding our brand’s presence in boutiques, gift shops, and concept stores. Actively seeking B2B collaborations to broaden
our reach. Plans include a retail launch in NYC, catering to the vibrant city. Also, looking to partner with retailers in Rochester. Boutique owners, salons, or independent agents, connect with us for samples and discussions.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
I am a Managing Partner with New York Life. I started in the business in 1995. I have been married to the absolute love of my life Wendy for 30 years. We have 3 children, Braden, Drew and Jordan. They have blessed us with 5 grandchildren. We are very active competing in marathons, hiking and camping. The last several years we have loved traveling. Thoroughbred race horse ownership has become a passion of ours and we love to spend time watching them. In 2022 I authored a children’s book, Little Billy & Beans in memory of my hero and dad.
What made you decide to get into the financial services field?
I wanted to get into a career that enabled me to have an impact on others and my family along with autonomy and limitless income potential. To this day, I am grateful for Burton Peck the man that referred me into this amazing career. Helping people make the best possible financial decisions has been fun, rewarding and challenging. I would not trade the last 29 years for anything.

run highly successful practices and some have gone on to become Partners (managers). It is extremely rewarding to help someone transition to a new career and see them thrive!
What are some of the things that you truly enjoy about what you do?
I absolutely love coaching people. I also believe that I am a connector of people and meeting so many great influential people allows me to connect them for
What made you choose New York Life?
Besides our financial strength and 180 year history, I choose New York Life for three reasons. Their complete transparency around advancement and what you need to do to be promoted. Second, the fact that we are a mutual company owned by our policy holders is critical. It allows us to align the decision making of the company with what is best for our clients. Being mutual our policy holders receive dividends when they are issued. Last year we paid out over 2.1 billion in dividend payments to our clients. Lastly was the alignment of my beliefs and the company’s support of corporate humanity. I believe that we help people make the most important insurance and investment decisions they will ever make. There are though, several people that aren’t able to make those decisions or are not in a position to do so. On average the New York Life Foundation gives back 28 million dollars a year to the communities that we serve nationally.
In 2017, you became a partner with New York Life. What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment since taking on that role?
My biggest accomplishment since taking on the role of Managing Partner is introducing 70+ new Financial Professionals to this great company! One of those Financial Professionals is our daughter Drew! Many of them
a higher good. Everything I have done professionally has helped me personally. By understanding the financial products we sell I have been able to implement solutons in my life that have helped tremendously. In addition, having a growth mindset around learning how to be a better leader allows you to use that same thought process on how to be a better husband, father and son. I am grateful that my professional and personal life have been so intertwined over the years.
What do you feel sets you apart from other managing partners?
I believe in a servant leadership approach that allows me to put others first. Helping others to understand their true “WHY” and how they can fulfill that I believe sets us apart. I believe that is my calling to help people become the best version of themselves they can create. I am passionate about coaching people to reach their fullest potential as individuals and professionals. Having a growth mindset and continuing to learn everyday has served me very well over the years as well.

What are some of the key services that you provide to your clients?
Peace of mind. That’s really what it boils down to, allowing people to live a worry free life. We offer solutions for people in the event that die to soon (life insurance), live to and through retirement (retirement planning), are injured or become sick while working (disability insurance) and dignity as they age in the event they become sick or ill (long term care insurance). We are also fortunate to offer group solutions for business owners such as 401k’s and group life and disability insurance.
If you were to tell one of your clients one key item that everyone really should have, what would that be? Any sound financial strategy starts with protection and should begin with life insurance. As you age, your needs change and so should your strategies. In the beginning though, sit with a professional who can help you determine the proper strategy for you.
How do you approach building and maintaining relationships with your clients?
Having a great relationship with your clients is critical. We do this through constant communication and recommendations. At a very minimum we are meeting with our clients on an annual basis. Often times we are getting together with them multiple times throughout the year.
What challenges have you faced in the financial services industry, and how have you overcome them? Life Insurance ownership in the United
States is at a post-World War 2 low. You can’t go more than a month without seeing someone some where with a gofundme campaign because someone has passed away. Having life insurance through work is great if your employer offers it but it should just be the start. Let’s take someone that might have a child or 2 under the age of 10. If they were making $80,000 a year that is $1.6 Million over the next 20 years without a raise. If something happened to that person that family and child is going to need significant life insurance in place. The misconception that life insurance is expensive sometimes prevents people from exploring it.
Can you share a success story where your services made a significant impact on a client’s life?
Fortunately I can recount many unbelievably heart warming stories of how we helped people retire on time or early. Clients share with us their gratitude around putting an education funding strategy together to help pay for their children’s education. I received a thank you card many years ago from a clients daughter. She saw her mother enter a nursing home and receive tremendous care for 4 years prior to passing away. Besides the great care her mom had long term care insurance and her estate was able to pass to her children because she had insurance for the nursing home. The most impactful story though goes back to a young couple my second year in the business. I sat with them and they were interested in putting money into a Roth IRA but had no life insurance and 2 children under the age of 5.
They ended up investing in a Roth but taking out an inexpensive $500,000 term policy covering the husband. He tragically died less than 2 years later. While sitting with the wife delivering the claim she said “the only way my kids are going to have a resemblance of the life that they would have had is because of what you did”.
What strategies do you use to stay current with the ever-changing financial landscape?
We are very fortunate to work with a company that is always innovating not only the policies that are offered but the programs used to develop the strategy. With the use of current technology and AI we are able to build customized strategies for every client through a consultative relationship based process. Our clients love to be digitally enabled with the newest tools and technology but they want to be human led.
How do you balance your professional responsibilities with your personal life?
I believe that a great deal of my professional success has come from a tremendous work life balance. Having the ability to prioritize my family and outside interests has enabled me to stay motivated. Having a balance is critical though. If I am not working hard enough I will not be able to deliver to my family the life I believe they deserve. On the other hand, if I am working or even on 24/7 I will jeopardize the husband, father and grandfather I desire to be. I think the saying work hard, play harder sums up my beliefs around work life balance.
“We are very fortunate to work with a company that is always innovating not only the policies that are offered but the programs used to develop the strategy.”
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in financial services? I would tell them that this can be the most rewarding career in the world. That being said, it is challenging. It takes great persistency and resilience to be successful. You truly get paid what you are worth in a career like this. Make sure you have positive, like minded people around you. Lastly, find a company and culture that supports you personally.
What are your future goals and
aspirations for your career at New York Life?
To continue to improve as a coach and mentor. I want to see our leadership team grow with the next generation of leaders. Lastly, I want to see each one of our financial professionals reach their personal and professional goals!

Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and your background?
I am a dedicated family man and community advocate in Wayne County, with three daughters and four grandchildren who all live, work, and go to school here.
Born in Central Florida in 1968, I grew up facing the challenges of being both Black and poor, moving frequently as part of a migrant worker family. Despite these obstacles, I developed resilience and adaptability.
After my grandmother’s death in 1982, I stayed in Wayne County, eventually falling into a lifestyle of drugs and crime. A prison sentence in 1997 marked a turning point, leading to self-improvement and a commitment to positive influence.
Since my release on parole in 2007, I’ve rebuilt my life, focusing on community work. As the Assistant Director of Wayne County Youth Advocate Programs, I founded the Wayne County Youth Council and Wayne County My Brother’s Keeper, working to support and guide young people and incarcerated individuals. I believe in the possibility of positive change and strive to be a role model and support for my community, organizing events like the Wayne County Unity Festival to bring people together and create a safe, inclusive space.
What motivated you to pursue a career in politics?
What made me decide to get involved in politics? It was quite simple. I’ve been working within the system for a
long time, trying to help at the local level. When I go to Albany, I receive a lot of support and can accomplish many things. However, when it comes to making things happen locally, I face numerous obstacles and often need external help to get things done. I realized that one major issue is that people here don’t stand up; instead, they blame others. I grew tired of the blame game. I know things can be different because I regularly work with people in Albany and see them make things happen. I want to bring that same level of action and effectiveness to our area.
What specific experiences or events inspired you to run for the New York State Assembly?
What motivated me to run for the New York State Assembly is the lack of support we feel here in the 130th District. Time and time again, I’ve witnessed our community’s needs being overlooked, and local efforts often fall short due to party politics and insufficient resources. Despite the willingness of leaders in Albany to help, the local political landscape has made it difficult to achieve meaningful progress.
This lack of support and the barriers to getting things done at the local level have driven me to step up and run for state office. I believe that by serving in the New York State Assembly, I can better advocate for our district and ensure that our voices are heard. My focus is on addressing the specific issues that affect Wayne County and Webster, and I am committed to bringing about the changes we need
to improve our community.
Could you highlight some of your key platforms that you believe distinguish you from your opponents in this race?
One of the things that distinguish me from my opponent is my dedication to addressing the needs of young people in our community, often at my own expense. I contribute to the community without seeking rewards, bringing together initiatives that focus on unity. I tackle controversial issues and make them manageable for everyone. My goal is to unite people and address problems that affect all segments of our community. I understand the intersectional challenges we face and aim to create a more cohesive and supportive community.
What are your main goals and priorities if elected to the New York State Assembly?
Young Adults Empowerment: We prioritize empowering young adults (18-35) by addressing their diverse needs and aspirations. By ensuring their voices are heard, we aim to create a thriving community that benefits everyone.
Accountability: We uphold transparency, responsibility, and open communication within our community and with the state government in Albany. Holding ourselves and our representatives accountable is crucial for impactful decision-making.
Positive Change: We strive for a future driven by optimism and positivity, aiming to enhance the quality of life for everyone in our community. A

County Unity Festival, in its 4th year, providing a safe space for community engagement and celebration.
• Dedicated Community Advocate, I am well known for supporting and assisting anyone in need within Wayne County.
You have been open about your experiences with the criminal justice system. How has this influenced your approach to politics and policy? My experiences with the criminal justice system have profoundly influenced my approach to politics and policy. During my time in NYS Prison, I underwent a personal transformation and became deeply involved in efforts to change the mindset of the inmate population. I learned about systemic issues from the inside out, earning appreciation awards and certificates from both community and peer organizations. This involvement gave me a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities within the system.
As a result, I am committed to criminal justice reform that focuses on rehabilitation, prevention, and reintegration, rather than solely on punishment. This includes supporting initiatives like Raise the Age and creating support groups for incarcerated individuals. My work has taught me the value of engaging directly with the community to understand their needs and challenges, ensuring that policies are grounded in the real-world experiences of those they affect. Having seen the effects of systemic failures firsthand, I prioritize transparency and accountability in government actions,
making sure policies are implemented fairly and effectively, with a clear focus on improving outcomes for all community members.
Additionally, I advocate for policies that provide comprehensive support services, including education, job training, mental health services, and substance abuse treatment. These are essential for reducing recidivism and helping individuals reintegrate into society successfully. My journey through the criminal justice system has given me a unique perspective and a strong commitment to making meaningful, positive changes in our community and beyond.
What steps do you believe should be taken to reform the criminal justice system in New York?
I think we need to empower local communities to address their unique issues while respecting the needs of larger communities. This local focus allows for tailored solutions that are more effective.
We must also prioritize reentry programs, providing comprehensive support to individuals transitioning back into society. This includes job training, education, mental health services, and substance abuse treatment, all crucial for reducing recidivism. Additionally, systematic reforms are necessary to shift the criminal justice system’s mindset from being solely punitive to incorporating a healingfocused approach. While punitive measures are sometimes necessary, the primary focus should be on rehabilitation and healing, addressing
the root causes of criminal behavior and supporting individuals in their journey to reintegrate successfully into society.
How do you envision improving educational opportunities and outcomes for students in your district? Simple, to improve educational opportunities and outcomes in our district, we need a comprehensive approach. First, we can obtain the necessary funding by cutting topheavy administrative costs, redirecting those savings to essential resources, technology, and competitive teacher salaries. Strengthen partnerships with community organizations to provide after-school programs, mentorships, and internships. Expand STEM and vocational training to prepare students for future jobs. Enhance access to counseling, mental health services, and special education. Encourage greater parental and community involvement to create a supportive learning environment. Invest in ongoing teacher professional development. Expand early childhood education to ensure a strong start before kindergarten. Ensure all schools have equal access to resources, addressing disparities and supporting underperforming schools. These solutions will create a more equitable and effective educational system, preparing our students for success.
Affordable housing is a concern for many New Yorkers. What strategies do you propose to address housing affordability? One strategy I have for addressing housing affordability, particularly

in the 130th Assembly District, is to promote comprehensive housing and homeownership information and awareness programs. These programs will empower potential homeowners with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions, thus improving the housing market in our area by creating more landowners. Additionally, I support initiatives that help new landlords maintain their properties more affordably, ensuring they can offer rental apartments at more reasonable prices. This approach will foster a more partnership-oriented relationship between landlords and tenants.
Furthermore, I propose a home care strategy for renters facing challenges in maintaining their homes. This initiative will provide educational resources and workshops to help renters become better homemakers, teaching essential skills for home care and maintenance. By supporting renters in this way, we can enhance the quality of living conditions and promote a sense of responsibility and community among tenants.
Environmental issues are becoming increasingly important. What is your stance on environmental conservation and sustainable practices?
I strongly believe in the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable practices. We must take significant steps to reduce harmful activities that damage our environment. This includes cutting down on pollution, protecting natural habitats, and promoting renewable energy sources. By adopting and supporting policies that prioritize sustainability, we can help ensure a healthier planet for future generations.
Can you tell us about any local community initiatives or projects you have been involved in?
I played a role in the Village of Newark’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI), a program designed to breathe new life into the downtown area with a budget of $10 million. This initiative focuses on improving infrastructure, attracting new businesses, and creating a vibrant, welcoming environment for residents and visitors. My contributions helped to advance these goals, contributing to the overall success of the revitalization efforts.
Outside of your political career, how do you spend your time?
For fun and recreation, I enjoy a variety of hands-on activities. I love building car stereos and doing mechanic work, as I find great satisfaction in tinkering with and fixing things. Watching NASCAR racing is another passion of mine, as I enjoy the excitement and precision of the sport. Recently, I discovered a new love for sailing. This led to my becoming an honorary member of the Sodas Bay Yacht Club and joining a sailing team. Being part of the sailing community has been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to learn new skills, enjoy time on the water, and connect with sailing enthusiasts.
Who are some of the individuals or leaders that have inspired you in your journey, and why?
Malcolm X (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz): Malcolm X inspired me by standing up against overwhelming odds and offering America a crucial choice during a pivotal time in history. He presented a powerful alternative to Martin Luther
King Jr.’s approach, advocating for Black Nationalism and self-reliance. His journey of transformation and unwavering commitment to justice deeply resonate with me.
Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain): Mark Twain, through his incisive wit and keen observations, challenged the rigid class structures of his time. His ability to use humor and storytelling to expose societal hypocrisies and advocate for social justice has been a significant source of inspiration in my own efforts to address and reform systemic issues.
What role do you see technology and innovation playing in the future of your constituency?
I see technology and innovation as crucial for our constituency’s future. Leveraging digital platforms will enhance communication and transparency, making government processes more accessible and engaging, especially for younger people.
By using social media, apps, and interactive websites, we can inform and involve the community more effectively. This will encourage younger generations to participate in civic duties.
Additionally, technology can drive cost-saving initiatives through digital record-keeping, online services, and automated systems, improving efficiency and reducing overhead costs.
Promoting STEM education and supporting tech-driven businesses will also prepare our youth for future job markets and spur economic growth. In summary, embracing technology and

BIG O’S TRAINING CAMP
YOU ARE ENOUGH.
BY NICOLE HEROUX WILLIAMS I PHOTOS BY NSP STUDIO
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you started Big O’s Soccer Training Club?
I moved to the USA from a refugee camp in Kenya in 2004, with my parents who are of Somali descent. I graduated from Alfred University in 2017, earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in accounting. From 2015 to 2017, I served as the assistant coach for the Alfred University Men’s Soccer team.
In 2017, I founded Big Os, starting with one-on-one lessons for my nephews. Seven years later, our journey has grown significantly. My experience as a student-athlete has shaped me into a better person, teaching me the importance of working with diverse groups of people—an essential skill in the real world.
My accounting background has paved the way for my entrepreneurial endeavors. With over eight years of experience in the healthcare and nonprofit sectors, I work as a financial consultant, providing specialized reports for state, federal, nonprofit, and for-profit organizations. Additionally, I run soccer programs in over seven towns and have coached more than 400 players in the greater Rochester area and Steuben County over the past seven years.
wanted to learn how to play soccer. I began giving them personal lessons, and as I recorded their progress, I realized the potential to share this training with a broader audience. This initial vision of fostering a love for soccer and developing skills in young players led to the establishment of Big O’s Training Club, where the focus is on providing engaging and effective soccer training for all participants.
to maintain high engagement levels. Our core principles are intensity, ensuring every session simulates realgame scenarios; effort, requiring each player to give their best at all times for continuous improvement; and quality, emphasizing precise execution and skill development in every drill and exercise.
When did you start playing soccer, and what drew you to the sport initially? I started playing soccer in 2004, drawn to the sport by its popularity and the excitement it generated in our home. Watching games together became a family activity, and with everyone around me playing, it was natural for me to join in and develop a passion for soccer.
Can you share your professional background and the industry you are in when you’re not providing soccer training?
What inspired you to create Big O’s Training Club, and what was the initial vision behind it?
The inspiration to create Big O’s Training Club came from my two young nephews, aged 5 and 6, who
What is the mission of Big O’s Training Club, and what core principles was it founded on?
The mission of Big O’s Training Club is to provide the best soccer experience through fully engaged sessions, ensuring that players are always accountable and motivated. To achieve this, we incorporate accountability factors, such as performing burpees for missing goals or not looking over shoulders,
I am a financial consultant with over eight years of experience in the healthcare and nonprofit sectors, specializing in preparing financial reports for state, federal, nonprofit, and for-profit organizations. Working on a contractual basis with various agencies, I maintain full control over my schedule. My accounting background has paved the way for my entrepreneurial endeavors, enabling me to deliver specialized financial analysis, compliance reporting, and strategic planning to meet the unique needs of each client.

YOU ARE ENOUGH.

O’s Training Club is helping clients act on their words and change their perspectives about their situations. Often, I hear concerns like a child having confidence issues, feeling sad or heartbroken, or feeling judged by others, including coaches. My response is simple: do something incredible and do it consistently. If you know how to inspire yourself at the individual level, your confidence and character will influence your environment. It shouldn’t matter what your environment thinks of you; at the end of the day, you have to deal with your emotions alone. So, learn to force yourself to do something incredible on days you do not feel so incredible because we are all human. Learn to self motivate!
What are some of the upcoming camps and clinics you have planned for the club?
This year, we are excited to launch our camps starting the week of July 8th and running through the first week of August 2024. These camps will be held in Canisteo, Hornell, CampbellSavona, Addison, and Arkport, NY, offering a range of opportunities for soccer enthusiasts to enhance their skills and enjoy a dynamic learning experience.
What is the main goal you aim to achieve through your soccer training programs?
My main goal is to foster accountability among my players, ensuring they are committed to playing soccer 5-6 days a week. This involves creating a supportive schedule and environment where each player can thrive. I believe that success in
life comes from consistently outplaying and out training oneself, and I strive to instill this mindset in all my players.
How do you stay motivated and inspired to continuously improve and grow Big O’s Soccer Training club?
Staying motivated to continuously improve and grow Big O’s Soccer Training Club is fueled by my passion for soccer and commitment to staying current in all aspects of the sport. I find inspiration by watching soccer matches and require my students to send me their season schedules, often attending over 20 games in a year when possible. This demonstrates my investment in their development and keeps me connected with the community. Additionally, maintaining a visible presence on social media platforms has been effective; we’ve garnered 965,000 views across all platforms from June 22, 2023, to June 22, 2024, which further motivates me to expand and enhance our club’s impact.
How do you balance your professional career and your passion for soccer training?
Balancing my professional career with my passion for soccer training revolves around disciplined time management, a skill I learned early in life. Inspired by motivational speeches from Kobe Bryant, I developed a routine that starts with waking up at 4 am. After morning prayers, I engage in physical activities like a 4-6 mile run or a 10-mile bike ride, followed by weight training. From 8 am to 1:30 pm, I focus on my role as a financial consultant, attending client meetings. Afternoon hours include
rest, lunch, and a walk with my wife, while evenings are dedicated to private sessions and team trainings for Big O’s Training Club, typically from 5 to 8:30 pm. I conclude my day with night prayers and ensure adequate sleep to maintain productivity and balance in both aspects of my life.
What challenges have you faced in establishing and running Big O’s Training Club, and how have you overcome them?
Establishing and running Big O’s Training Club presented several challenges initially. The primary hurdle was attracting players to join training sessions, especially given the competitive and territorial nature of youth soccer clubs in the Rochester area. To differentiate the club and avoid direct competition, the decision was made to focus solely on supplemental programs rather than forming teams for league play. This approach helped carve out a niche and establish a distinct value proposition.
Another significant challenge was effectively scheduling clients. To streamline this process and ensure smooth operations, an administrator was hired specifically for scheduling all private lessons. This allowed for a focus on acquiring additional leads and expanding programs across the greater Rochester area and into Steuben County. By addressing these challenges with strategic decisions and a clear vision, Big O’s Training Club has been able to grow and thrive in a competitive youth soccer market.
“Watching games together became a family activity, and with everyone around me playing, it was natural for me to join in and develop a passion for soccer.”
How do you tailor your training programs to meet the diverse needs of your participants?
I tailor our training programs to cater to the unique strengths and weaknesses of each participant. For example, if there’s a 6-foot, 190-pound advanced striker, we focus on maximizing the advantages of their physical stature through drills emphasizing hold-up play, shielding, 1v1 scenarios, shooting drills, and close-up techniques. This personalized approach aims to enhance their specialized skills significantly. On the other hand, for a recreational player who excels in sprinting with the ball but struggles
with passing and combination play, we concentrate on drills that enhance their speed and shooting abilities, making them even more proficient in these areas. Gradually, we integrate passing drills and encourage involvement in team plays, including crossing if applicable, to foster a more well-rounded skill set while still emphasizing their unique strengths
What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own sports training club or pursue a career in coaching?
My advice to someone looking to
start their own sports training club or pursue a career in coaching would be to take action and start small. Turn on the camera, begin with what you have, and ask questions to fuel your curiosity and learning. It’s essential to obtain grassroots licenses and certifications relevant to your sport. Stay committed and consistent for at least five years, as building a successful training club or coaching career takes time and perseverance
DOZE GUYS ENTERTAINMENT
What inspired you to start Doze Guyz Entertainment as a family business?
We started the business after renting sound equipment that we used to play music for a food truck event my family hosted as part of a non-profit that we worked with in my area. During the event, people asked who the DJs were, and my mom would respond with “Those Guys” referring to me and my brother. And my family being from Long Island and formerly having strong down-state accents, it became “Doze Guys”. Eventually we purchased our own equipment and began our entertainment business with each family member having their own skills and benefits to bring to the table.
Can you describe the types of entertainment services you offer?
We offer DJ services which can be used anywhere from small events to weddings. With our DJ services, we also have a system of requesting songs entirely on client’s phones and I receive the request right at my setup. We also have a photobooth and a large range of props we offer for all sorts of occasions and themes. The photobooth can also text the client’s photos straight to their phones or be printed out for them to keep. Our mom, Christine, can provide wedding officiant services. She is fully ordained and can be used if a wedding client does not have a minister available. During the Christmas Holiday Season she performs as Mrs. Claus for events. Fun fact is we tell clients they can be married by a fully ordained Mrs. Claus.
How do you ensure that your services meet client expectations and stand out from competitors?
We work with clients to provide five star service within their budget. Events are expensive and we do not want our clients to be put into the position of breaking the bank for a great time. One of our business models is why should our clients not be able to still get a quality DJ experience for what their budget entails? We believe that people should still be able to have a fun party for a reasonable price. We also ensure the client has complete control over their playlist. We’ve
heard from clients before that other DJs will limit a client’s playlist to ten or so songs and then play what the DJ wants to play for the rest of the event. We do not do that and make sure the client can have full control of the night for what they want to hear. It is their event and we are there to just make sure everyone has fun!
What have been some of the most memorable highlights or events for your business?
One of our most favorite events has been working with Laurelton Pardee Intermediate School in East
Irondequoit. I work with a lot of schools for events, and none can come close to Laurelton Pardee. The students, staff and parents are extremely respectful, kind, and fun. We know it will always be a great event each and every time.
How do you divide roles and responsibilities among family members within the business?
We divide the roles between all four family members equally. I oversee managing the sound equipment, the music, and work with the clients for their upcoming events. Thomas handles creating graphics and visuals for advertising and for our photobooth. Thomas has his own business of gaming and artwork named Games By Thomas. Thomas as well as handles the equipment with me or can do his own events if we have more than one booked for a certain day. Christine, our mom, handles the finances, our paperwork, scheduling meetings, and organizes all our events. And Steven, our dad, handles the photobooth operations and maintenance of the physical equipment.
What are the advantages and challenges of running a business with your family?
Running a business with my family has many, many advantages. It keeps us active, and we all get to go out together and spend time together, making other people’s nights and events all that much better. Some clients have even said that by us being a family business gives them more of a reason to hire us and give us business compared to commercial organizations.

BY NICOLE HEROUX WILLIAMS I PHOTOS BY NSP STUDIO
There is a higher level of trust that we will conduct ourselves professionally and provide quality service.
How do you handle conflicts or disagreements in the business? Whenever a conflict arises within the business, we have family meetings to discuss what conflict there is and how to solve it. All decisions are made as a family. Usually, we resolve whatever situation that arises for dinner and dessert in our house. The kitchen table is our boardroom.
Can you share any success stories or testimonials from your clients?
Doze Guyz are wonderful DJs. I have been to several events with them. They cater the music to your needs or the audience. I’ve seen them get people out on the floor having fun that I thought would never get out there. Whenever I hear they are going to be at an event I am going to, I get very excited because I know it will be a good time. - Diane A.
They were amazing! I would recommend them over and over again! We went quite a bit off the “normal” reception script and they were great! Everyone had so much fun. Refilled the floor and took our family one song request at a time to finish out our night!! It was perfect!!! Highly recommend!!! - Kim Aponte
These DJs are great! They always have the perfect music catered to the event. I recently attended a Luau Fundraiser and Doze Guyz entertained us all evening from a hula contest to limbo. One hundred people dancing the night

Homecoming…Let’s start with the dance. This homecoming dance, Mardi Gras theme was one to remember. Most of these kids have never experienced going to a dance before. It was a little awkward at first for many , but let me tell you, they danced their tushies off thanks to Doze Guyz DJs. Dan you rocked the gym! - LeeAnn D.
What strategies do you use to market your entertainment services?
One of our best strategies for marketing has been Facebook, our website and Instagram. Our mom, Christine, is incredibly well versed in marketing strategies and promoting our content online. She posts advertisements for us all over local pages and we have also been recommended on pages by friends of the business. We are members of two of our local Chamber of Commerces along with other organizations. We also advertise by having large magnets with our business name on our cars, so everyone in our town knows who we are. People have stopped us when we are out and about asking about our services. We are open to doing fundraisers, sponsorships and other barter style events. Through good connections and philanthropy people know we are a true and honest company.
How do you stay updated with trends and changes in the entertainment industry?
The most trends and changes that we really must keep up with are just equipment maintenance and music tastes of different generations. Using our digital request platform has been
a massive help to the business and allows us to fine tune our playlist to the audience based upon what requests come in. As well, my brother Thomas being extremely well versed in technology, allows us to keep up with technical trends and updates that may come our way.
What are some unique features or services that Doze Guyz Entertainment offers?
First and foremost is our pricing. No fuss, no frills, all fun! We come with high quality equipment, lights for the dance floor and a professional photo booth setup. Other unique features are our digital elements of having our online song request platform, party guests can request songs from the comfort of their seat. They don’t have to make their way to the DJ booth. As well, with the photobooth photos clients can have their photos emailed or texted right then and there. Many find that to be much easier than waiting on the printed photos.
How do you manage the balance between family life and business commitments?
We have found that the line between family life and business commitments has been sort of blurred over time. A lot of our commitments are also personal connections with those whom we share relations with. Like school events and local restaurants that we frequent, we almost always see a friend at our events, and it becomes a social gathering as well as work. This will always be a work in progress as our business grows. We see the line as a fluid entity that is always moving.

What do you think sets your company apart in the entertainment industry?
I believe our family element sets us apart. The fact that we as a family can understand our client’s wants and needs without breaking their budget allows us to stand apart from others. We always strive to give the best five star experience while still maintaining a budget, theme and expectations set by a client. We have found a niche in the smaller wedding venues. Every couple deserves to have the wedding of their dreams and we like to be The Guyz to make that happen.
Can you discuss a specific event that was particularly challenging and how you overcame it?
There really is not one event we can pinpoint as a challenge. Each and everyone presents their own set of challenges. The best thing we can do is learn, adapt and adjust for our next event.
directions, ideas and feedback to them that could make their day even more amazing.

events that take place on the same day. We are in the process of acquiring additional equipment to have multiple teams to tackle multiple events on the same day. Eventually we could have a larger group of teams to tackle numerous events while still being involved in the day to day.
What advice would you give to other families considering starting a business together?
How do you handle feedback and ensure continuous improvement in your services?
We take every piece of feedback seriously and use what was given to us to adapt our approach to every aspect of the business. For example, we are always fine tuning our interview process for our wedding clients. We have two pre-wedding consultations to cover all the details for their special day. We can provide suggestions,
and a very prestigious event for us. We were truly honored to be a part of the celebration and were able to meet state representatives and congresspeople and it was really a humbling experience.
How do you envision the future growth and expansion of your company?
We envision our future growth to possibly expand outside our family and hiring other people and creating multiple teams of Doze Guyz for
Our advice for other families starting their own business is to ensure that every family member has a part in the business. Make use and highlight everyone’s strengths and skills. With our DJ business we have called upon each family member’s abilities and skills to ensure that we have everyone involved. We have learned you need to listen to and continue to support each other . Your family is your team and your best assets to your company.
MEET JASON MINNAMON
Jason, tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
I am a retired USMC Veteran and dad of 3. I was a High School and College Division 1 athlete in football and have been involved in athletics in some aspect or another my whole life. I spent my post military career working in IT Security working with executives of Fortune 500 companies and had been an athletic coach for the better part of 15 years before retiring from athletic coaching. I am now retired and have dedicated myself to Fitness Consulting, Mentoring, Leadership, Nutrition, Life/Relationship Coaching, and Embodiment Practices, specifically to motivated business professionals, executives, and CEO’s and helping guide high functioning and highly driven individuals operate at their peak performance through those practices due to their highly demanding lifestyle.
My story has all of the twists and turns along the way. I endured a catastrophic spinal injury that cut my military career short. I have since built a successful corporate career, managed people, multi million dollar sales territories, worked directly with C-Level executives and large scale projects. So I personally understand the lifestyle and the demands that are placed on high functioning driven individuals. I let the stresses of life, work, parenting, relationships, marriages, and divorce wear me down physically and mentally. I then had my awakening and I spent the better part of 5 years completely rebuilding myself physically and
mentally. Mentally and physically I have become stronger than I ever thought possible through a journey of education, fitness, nutrition, meditation and embodiment practices. I wake up with the goal of being the best version of myself everyday and have put my body and mind in a position to be able to keep up.
How did you come to found NuME
Fitness and Consulting Supplements?-
This was actually completely by accident and was a bi product of my own personal journey. I worked with and mentored under some really great coaches, invested in my education and certifications, again for my own personal benefit and as others started to watch my transition they asked what the secret was. I started working with a few executives that I had previous business relationships with and realized
how much knowledge and information I was sitting on and realized how incredibly selfish it was to not share that information with others. So I spent the next year building technology and delivery systems to work with clients that needed efficiency and for solutions to be highly mobile and thus NuME was born.
Can you share more about the journey and challenges you faced while establishing NuME Fitness and Consulting Supplements?
The biggest challenges building NuME was around collaboration and putting in place the right resources to give our clients access to some of the best information out there. These days the health, fitness, and nutrition industry is so bogged down with information overload that it is very complex to navigate what has validity to it and what is just marketing fluff. if you ask 100 health and fitness professionals how to build a solution to something that will help you reach your goals you will get 100 different answers. I wanted to bring collaboration in with some of the best in the industry to minimize the learning curve and also make the solutions available highly efficient because as busy professionals time is at a premium. We do not have the luxury as high achievers to be spinning our wheels we need things to be high speed low drag and impact our daily lives as least as possible. That was actually how the supplement side of our business was born. I had so many struggles working with supplement companies that we just decided to build our own line so we could have

full control of sourcing and ingredient decks dosages etc.
What did you do prior to opening your business, and how did those experiences shape your current venture?-
I am a Marine Corps Veteran so very well versed in leadership, I worked in IT security and managed large scale projects, employees, teams and clients. I also held executive and leadership positions within the non profit space and have a background in coaching. I also hold my NYS professional coaches license for athletics. Most of my experience though comes from life. I have been very blessed with my network and the individuals I have been exposed to and mentored under along with my own personal struggles and having to rebuild and course correct along the way. The challenges I have faced over the course of my own personal life were a gift in hindsight and allow me to help others achieve peak performance in their own lives.
What is the main goal for NuME Fitness, and how do you help people achieve and maintain peak performance?
The main goal for NuME is to help others implement solutions in their own lives to help them maintain peak performance so that they can handle all the stressors we carry as high achieving individuals and the toll it takes on our system. This starts with Fitness, Nutrition and Supplementation as the cornerstone because you have to put your body in a position to operate at peak performance before you can
tackle the other containers. You have to have balance and sustainable solutions in this that fit your lifestyle in order to have consistency and fuel yourself properly. You need to have a detailed personalized plan to accomplish this in order to have any level of consistency and success. Next we typically address sleep, breathwork, and embodiment practices to help with the mental and recovery side. Our mental health and cognitive function is so critical to our daily lives as high achievers and executives and while we can boost performance through nutrition and supplementation we have to incorporate sleep and mental work at the core. Embodiment practices help keep us grounded and give us the mental clarity needed to function at a very high level.
What does peak performance mean to you, both personally and in the context of your business?
Peak performance for us is really broken down into 4 containers
Power- Everything having to do with your bodies physical performance. Nutrition, Supplementation, and Sleep all falls under this container.
Passion which is everything relating to relationships, your personal and intimate relationships as well as your professional relationships, along with your relationship with self. At the end of the day relationships and management of those relationships is what makes the world go round. 90% of business is done through relationships. Additionally our personal relationships have such a dynamic impact on our
mental state and when there is toxicity, turbulence, and unhealthy things occuring in those relationships it is so disruptive to everything else around us.
Purpose which is everything revolving around our Mindset, Mental Health, and Spiritual relationships. This includes meditation, embodiment practices, study, connections with spirituality whatever that may look like for you. We have to be equally strong in mind as we are in body and its a cultivated skill that requires work just like working on your physicality.
Production. This is everything relating to our business and professionals lives. Interestingly enough we have found that while there are classes, courses, and plans to cultivate production the number one thing you can do to increase your productivity by far is to balance out the other 3 containers. If you have balance and put work into those containers consistently your ability to operate at a high level in business goes significantly up.
Can you describe the core values and philosophy that drive NuME Fitness and Consulting Supplements?-
We believe to our core if you have a top 10% achievement in life and you’re still average in your physical appearance and performance, personal fitness, relationships, and mindset it says something. You can fool the masses, but you can’t fool other high achievers, including yourself. Nothing shows character more than being mediocre in any area of your life. You might even be seen as a “leader”, but there is a painful truth that most successful

to our business and professionals lives. high achievers know......5, 6, and 7 can not lead 8, 9, or 10. So if you’re not at least an 8, you’re leading sheep not lions. If you can look in the mirror and say you’re not at your best… Then what are you waiting for. The truth is...If your dedicated enough to achieve a top 10% body, mind, and relationships it says something about your DISCIPLINE and CHARACTER and it opens the door for you to always perform at your peak. It’s about being a LION and leading other lions. It’s about being respected by the top 10% of your peers, where when you walk into a room you command it and people turn their head notice.
Where did the name “NuME” come from, and what does it signify for your business?
Its a play on words from New Me its about building a new you and taking control of your journey.
What sets NuME Fitness apart from other fitness and consulting services in the market?-
and in what order to apply them.
How do you tailor your services to meet the unique needs and goals of each client?
We start off with an assessment, blood work, goal setting and planning, and relationship building to assess what
We do things very differently than most companies in this space. Everything we do is 100% personalized to the individual client there are no programs or pre canned plans. In order for a client to be successful everything needs to be tailored to them as individuals to fit their goals and lifestyle because everyone is different. We take a very unique approach in this and really get to know our clients on a very personal level in order to know what tools to apply to their lifestyle
roadmap on how to get them to peak performance based on their individual needs, capabilities, and lifestyle.
What are some of the most common fitness and health challenges your clients face, and how do you help them overcome these obstacles?
Inundation of information is probably the biggest hurdle. Most have been exposed to a high volume of information while trying to figure it out on their
own or working with others and so we have to so some unearning, education, psychology, and behavioral change. The actual implementation and build out of plans is generally easier than the mindset change and then from there it is walking the path with them as an accountability partner and adjusting the plans as needed as growth and change occurs.
Can you share some success stories or testimonials from clients who have benefited from your services? Yes. I have some via text and some via video.
How do you stay current with the latest trends and research in fitness, nutrition, and health? We have trusted resources that we lean on for information and specialists in specific fields that we collaborate with and we are very heavy on the science and actual vetted research and case studies. We have become very well versed in vetting information and we evolve, test, and develop as additional information becomes available.
What role does nutrition play in the programs you design for your clients? Nutrition is probably the leading part of what we do. There is so much mis information on nutrition it is very hard for most people to decipher. People that want to be healthy generally try very hard and think they are building healthy habits but unfortunately a lot of times due to lack of having a plan that aligns with their goals actions become very counterproductive to

We manufacture a line of our own products and continue to expand in that space. Most of our current line are products that we needed better sourcing on for high performing quality ingredients and dosages in products that matched our needs. We do as part of our plans create full supplement stacks based on the clients needs some of which are our products and some are 3rd party that we have evaluated and tested. KDS DESIGN STUDIO
Can you tell us about the journey that led to the creation of KDS Design Studio?
Great question. Many of my colleagues in my industry have stories of dreaming of owning a landscape business or starting as a kid mowing lawns in their neighborhood. My journey is a little different. One might think that the entrepreneurial idea was formed from a spin off from a family business or perhaps a degree in horticulture or landscape design. In my case it was not. I graduated from RIT and was working as a Tool & Die Maker. During those early years I started in Rental Property and that is when I was first introduced to my first mentor. At that time, the term “Mentor” had very little meaning. But I was inspired by this person’s tenacity and ability to make money at literally everything he touched. During a conversation regarding all the time spent maintaining my properties after work at the factory, he said why don’t you buy a commercial mower to speed things up. From that conversation the journey began with the official launch of my first company in the landscape industry in 1992, Cutting Edge Lawncare.
opportunity and the business grew and so did the demands on me. During these years I realized that what I am passionate about is serving others and sharing my creativity. However, I was not able to do that effectively because my time was spent managing a large team of employees and seemingly putting out fires.
In roughly 2019 the decision was

KDS Design Studio is an Outdoor Living Design + Build firm offering conceptual + architectural design along with project management.
At KDS Design Studio, it is our mission to create outdoor living environments that bring family and friends closer together. We carefully listen to your desires, goals, and craft your outdoor living design to bring what you love about the inside of your home outside.
Fast forward to 2004, the business had grown tremendously. Our scope of services had diversified, expanding into projects that went far beyond that of a maintenance company. We were in desperate need of rebranding, which brought the formation of Stonewood and Waters Craftsmen. Every balanced landscape has three elements, Stone + Wood + Water. This sparked incredible
made to create a new version of how Stonewood and Waters, Inc operated. Over the previous 27 years, I have seen patterns in the industry and listened to the needs of our clients, KDS Design Studios is the answer to that need. KDS Design Studios serves families in our region and across the country find certainty through clarity of vision and budget friendly solutions for Outdoor Living.
What specific services does KDS
We partner with our clients for the success of their space by focusing on a design first approach. We recognize that most know what they don’t like about their property but struggle to visualize a solution and know where to start. We appreciate that most families will make an investment in their outdoor living environment once in their lifetime. So, we carefully design around lifestyle and goals while keeping the budget in mind. We understand that for many, a project’s evolution may take multiple years and multiple phases. Even more reason a road map is so important before the journey begins.
KDS Design Studios is proud to work with our region’s most sought-after craftsmen and trade partners to ensure your project gets the best tradesman in the area.
Could you share one of the most memorable projects you’ve had the opportunity to work on?

So many favorites it’s near impossible to narrow it down. However I will say, and it may come as a surprise to learn that the size or scope of the project mean very little to me. It’s all about the relationships and the creativity found in the solution.
In a competitive industry, what sets KDS Design Studio apart from the others?
Great question! The landscaping world is full of companies competing for sales, and clients looking for ways to save. Without question the economy of the past several years has been a bit crazy but now has returned to what I consider to be “pre-covid” levels. This has brought about an increase in competition for sales for certain.
However, what makes us unique is that we simply don’t compete. People who hire us do so because they are looking for certainty and a partnership. Much like your Accountant, Doctor, or Attorney, you seek their expertise because you trust their advice.
create clarity of vision for their clients. We love collaborations!
What aspects of your background do you believe contribute most to your ability to craft artistic spaces?
Well, the creative gene came from my mother Marjorie Stevens for sure! She is simply an amazing human. My father, Bill Stevens, who is no longer with us, was a High School teacher in East Rochester, and was everything

What are some distinctive features or elements that clients often request or admire in your designs?
BUT Creative or Handy. So, mom gets the credit there.
Often, our clients face unique site challenges, or they are looking for something unique. We design our spaces to have a call to action, creating distinct zones for each experience. This approach allows us to create focal points of interest from the view from the home. Often, it’s the simplest things like mixing materials or an accent feature that makes a KDS space stand apart from just a patio. We also believe in the less is more approach, so our plans typically have clean lines and lean toward modern living. When our clients say, “We never thought of that,” I know we nailed it!
The sad reality is that many homeowners have invested hard earned money into their home without clear expectations and been sold something that served their budget but not their lifestyle. Leaving them discouraged and now looking for ways to fix what was done poorly the first time.

I have to say that without question, the trust that my clients have extended in me over my career allowed me to reach beyond the confines of lines. I have also been blessed to collaborate with some of the most talented Outdoor Living & Pool Designers in the country. I call them my “Tribe”. It’s a remarkable story how we have all come together, but the result has been amazing!

On average, how long does it take to complete a project from initial consultation to final installation?

process a client goes through when working with KDS Design Studio?
From Initial Contact, we send a Client Questionnaire to help us organize and prioritize goals. Upon receipt we schedule a consultation call, where all decision makers are present. During that call we review the goals and get to know each other a bit. From there we discuss basic budget ranges and design costs. If we are the right fit, we will then schedule a site visit to take a survey of the property. From there we go into design. Upon completion of the initial design, a meeting will be scheduled either at our office or the home. At that time the conceptual plans and a rough budget are reviewed. If revisions are required, we allow for 2 rounds of revisions if they are withing the original scope. Once the final plans and budgets are approved, then we go into the construction phase.
How do you ensure that the designs you create align with your clients’ vision and preferences?
getting the immediate “must haves” done without breaking the bank & creating a problem down the road. To this point, we will also have the uncomfortable conversation about postponing work all together if it is not in the client’s best interests to start due to budget restraints at that given time. Nobody enjoys wasted time or money, especially us.
spaces (patios) The trend has gone back to more earth tones verse grays with high contrasting borders. Shade is so important with so many working from home these days combined with ways to extend the seasons.
What are some common challenges you face in your line of work, and how do you overcome them?
Well as a recovering people pleaser, knowing when to say “No” can be a challenge for me personally at times. However, I believe that in order to serve my clients at the highest level, they expect and deserve my honesty.
That is simple really, we listen. We understand that often clients are looking to break the project down into manageable phases. The key to success in these situations is to prioritize goals to avoid wasted money or having to redo portions of the plan down the road. Often clients are apprehensive to share the “big picture” goals, because they worry that the contractors will take advantage of them. The truth is that this often hurts them in the long run. Our approach is to plan for the big picture and carefully strategize
Are there any notable industry trends or innovations that have influenced the way you approach your designs?
Yes most definitely. With our exposure to clients outside our immediate region, specifically out west, we are exposed to many design trends that are not quite here yet. People want to enjoy the outdoors but want the same comforts of their favorite room in the house.
People tend to gravitate to a space with clean lines, with specific defined purpose rather than just large open
This may sound odd but maintaining profitability can also be a challenge. Let’s be honest, the cards are stacked against anyone who needs the weather to cooperate for the success of a project. I can tell you with absolute certainty every proposal is written inside a climate-controlled space. So, when it rains every other day, it’s a problem. Also, respectfully most all clients are looking to maximize their budget in any way they can. The last thing on their mind is ensuring that their contractor is making a profit. They assume they are but rarely are they excited about it. So to overcome those challenges we openly discuss costs and set clear expectations from the onset of the planning process.
Lastly and the most common challenge is always labor. Its just hard for anyone to find staff these days and the costs

We work with dozens trade partners through out the region to ensure that we have the best team or at times multiple teams for your project. Our Trade Partners value our relationship because we offer them the opportunity to what they love-build exciting projects!
How do you maintain a balance between functionality and aesthetics in your designs?
We design around lifestyle and function first always! We certainly love building interesting spaces but if the furniture doesn’t fit, why bother. Often there are challenging site conditions that need to be addressed, so we create artistic solutions combined with ease of use to maximize usability.
we survey what the tastes are of each client and make the recommendations that best suit them.

The aesthetics happens naturally with any well balanced and functionally designed space.
Are there any specific materials or design techniques that you frequently incorporate into your projects

Those looking for employment or to open a business, this field offers so many opportunities its almost impossible to list. My advice to anyone looking to grow and create a future for themselves is to surround yourself with people that are willing to partner in your success. Surround yourself with people you would aspire to be or look up to.

LUX POOL AND SPA
Can you tell us about the journey that led to the creation of Lux Pools and Spa?
In my career I have designed and developed quite a few inground pools over the past three decades. I can say with certainty that we have some fantastic pool builders in our region. Families will make an investment in an inground pool with the common goals of creating a place for family and friends to gather, relive and share cherished childhood memories with their children, and most frequently to keep the kids at home verse somewhere else. Sound familiar? To those who have purchased a pool or are planning to it likely is.
The challenge faced by many pool buyers is that most of the pool companies in our region only build pools. Leaving the client is tasked with finding often multiple ancillary companies to create the design, install the patios, restore the lawn, install the fence, privacy plantings, and on and on. Let’s not forget having to manage all those trades while your yard looks like a bomb went off. This is probably one of the reasons most families will only buy one pool in their lifetime. LUX has been a passion project for nearly 15 years. The idea started when I was creating a secrete lagoon for a family in Rochester, NY. This was a natural recreational swim pond combined with a beautiful water feature. This family loved their Koi Pond I had created previously so much that they wanted to be able to swim with their fish! Certainly not for everyone, but the idea of creating
a tranquil space that was smaller than that of a typical pool seemed to appeal to many. The idea that this space could be naturalized with boulders, heated, and jetted to create almost a hot spring spa environment really inspired me. I knew that not everyone wants a secrete lagoon, but what they do want is a place to get wet and create memories but deserved the certainty that was missing in the

mainstream pool industry. So Lux Pool & Spa offers just that. Certainty and clear expectations.
What range of services are provided by Lux Pool and Spa?
Lux Pool and Spa realizes that not everyone wants a massive pool but enjoys the idea of adding a space to get wet and socialize.
Lux offers Turn-Key predesigned Pool and Spa Packages focused on Cocktail
We also offer full maintenance packages to our Lux pool clients
In a competitive industry, what sets Lux Custom Pools and Spa apart from others?
We openly embrace that we may not be the right fit for everyone, and that is perfectly alright. Lux Pool and Spa has a different approach. We sell transformation. What that means is that we simply won’t just sell a pool as compared to much of the competition.
We offer predesigned packages that allow you to select the size pool/spa & outdoor space that fits your lifestyle and budgetary comfort level. By combining all the true costs involved, and one point of contact throughout the entire process, Lux Pool & Spa clients find certainty in their purchase. The excitement of being able to see exactly what their new pool will look like in their yard is also a game changer.

experiences find the same certainty through detailed custom design and clear budget expectations.
Which geographical areas will Lux Pool and Spa service?
Greater Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, and the Finger Lakes Region
What are some distinctive features or elements that clients often request or admire in your Pools and Designs?
We are exclusive dealers of Aquatechnics and Immerspa Pools & Spas. These lines have carefully been selected to offer the best manufacturing standards and longevity in the fiberglass pool industry. We also represent Soake Pools which are concrete plunge style pools. Our predesigned packages have been assembled with smaller pools with modest patio space to allow for maximum results while being budget conscious.
Can you walk us through the typical process a client goes through when working with Lux Pool and Spa?
From initial contact clients have opportunity to view our predesigned plans and basic budgets. Once they have found the pool & patio they love, they place a fully refundable deposit down. Once the deposit is received then feasibility of the design is determined as it pertains to their specific property. If no design revisions
On average, how long does it take to complete a project from initial consultation to final installation?
Great question!
Everyone knows that the process of installing an Inground Pool can be exhaustingly long.
We specifically focus on smaller pool environments to maximize efficiency and get you in your pool as fast as possible. Depending on the package selected, our goal is to have your project complete within 3-4 weeks from the date of delivery of the pool.
are required and if the initial budgets look good, we draft a final contract. At that time a second deposit is required to produce the pool. Approximate delivery dates are generated, and we wait for installation. Estimated delivery is typically 6-8 weeks from the final contract.
Once the pool has been received, we schedule the installation.
How do you ensure that the designs you create align with your clients’ vision and preferences?
We start by listening to their goals, and discuss the overall costs involved to get them to where they want to be. Remember we don’t sell pools; we transform outdoor living lifestyles that involve a pool. So, we would rather not sell a family a pool knowing that they will not be able to complete their goals completely and comfortably. If the clients do not see a predesigned package that fits their vision and preferences, then we design a plan that exactly meets the lifestyle they are striving for.
Are there any notable industry trends or innovations that have influenced the way you approach your designs?
When families are considering the installation of a pool, the trends used to be massive pools with large deep ends. The reality today is that often families are not willing to sacrifice that much of their yard for a pool they only use for a few months a year. So we offer fully insulated pools that extend the season. They are smaller pools that are meant more for social activity verse cannon balls.
Another very popular trend is the Cold Plunge or Ice Bath pools. Our Pools offer the ability to be chilled for those interested in the beneficial effects of cold plunge.
Our biggest trending design is our “Cocktail” Pool. A cocktail pool is larger than that of a traditional spa or hot tub. They are molded

Bio #1: Kiwi is large and in charge. As far as she’s concerned what she says goes. Kiwi can be a chatty cat at times but that is because she has seen a lot in her 13 years at ACS. We are pretty sure that if we could understand her meows, she’d be saying “feed me!” Kiwi loves food, if she’s out and about you better believe she’s looking for food. Kiwi likes a little bit of attention but for the most part, Kiwi is very independent, making her snuggles even more magical. So if you are looking for an independent cat in need of a fur-ever home and the occasional snuggles, Kiwi is your girl!
Bio #2: Kiwi is a beautiful cat who has basically spent her entire life here. As a sanctuaried cat, she is unable to be adopted, but that hasn’t stopped her from living her best life. Despite her circumstances, Kiwi is a very sweet and affectionate cat who craves love and attention from anyone who will give it to her. At times, Kiwi can be independent, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t enjoy the company of humans. She is a very chatty cat and will happily talk your ear off if it means she might get some treats or a bit of extra attention. Speaking of treats, Kiwi absolutely loves them and will do just about anything for a tasty snack. Living at the sanctuary, Kiwi has had plenty of time to get used to her surroundings, but that doesn’t mean she wouldn’t appreciate a bit of extra affection
BY THE ACS TEAM
from time to time. Whether it’s a gentle pat on the head or a cozy spot to curl up in, Kiwi loves nothing more than feeling loved and appreciated.
Kiwi facts:
-Came to ACS for rehoming on 8/4/2007! She stayed with us for 17 years!!
-Was adopted for just under 2 months in 2020 but besides that, Kiwi stayed at the shelter her entire life up until she was recently adopted this last month!
-We celebrated Kiwi’s 16th birthday at the shelter on March 29th 2024 (photos attached)
Kiwi went into Foster to Adopt on June 4th and was officially adopted on June 11th She remains in her home and is doing very well!
-She lives with another cat that she didn’t care for at first but is coming around to as the days go by!
-Kiwi enjoys sitting on the windowsills of her new home watching the birds and sleeping in the same bed as her parents.
-Kiwi was adopted at 16 years old - our oldest (and longest) resident at ACS
A long journey Kiwi has been on and we are so happy to see her go into her (hopefully) forever home!

WELCOME TO NORTHEAST PAIN SOLUTIONS
BY NICOLE HEROUX WILLIAMS I PHOTOS BY NSP STUDIO
BY CHANCE & BRIAN LOWRY
Why did we open Northeast Pain Solutions?
Northeast Pain Solutions started nearly 20 years ago in the form of Lowry Chiropractic & Wellness Care in Geneva NY, under the ownership of my father Brian Lowry. After Completing his education at NYCC my father purchased a practice In Geneva NY. One of his best attributes is his honesty within his practice. Back in the day, Chiropractic had some odd ducks within the profession (and still does to some degree ). Many Chiropractors claimed outlandish benefits and used scare tactics to gain patients ( this is not specific to Chiropractors, I have seen many other practitioner types do the same). My father was always truthful and progressive in how he ran his practice, from the verbiage he used to the technology he placed within his office. My dad recognized the need for collaboration among Doctors early on. My father was able to help MDs manage patients in a Conservative way while also referring to them for help with the patients he was struggling to progress with. This collaboration model was very unique for the time, considering this was an era when Medical Doctors and
Chiropractors didn’t typically work well together.
While Completing my Doctorate and Master’s degree in Portland OR, I saw and experienced firsthand how MDs, PTs, NPs, DCs, nutritionists, massage therapists, and acupuncturists all worked together in multidisciplinary settings for the best of the patient. Healthcare is not a one-size-fits-all, and the more practitioners willing to work together for a patient, the
better chances an individual has at gaining answers and relief from their injuries.
Northeast Pain Solutions was opened to expand what my father started, to help people get out of pain with various options that do not include medications, injections, or surgeries, and to bridge the gap between conservative care options and medical options for pain management. We have seen that when it comes to the health field, patients need clarification on
what kind of practitioner to see, and what their alternative options are for pain/injuries. Patients feel like they are just shuffled from doctor to doctor with no one communicating about them or to them. Our mission has been to link the gap between mainstream medicine and conservative care and create positive working relationships with a wide variety of practitioners so that we can best serve the patients based on their needs and goals. To do this, we couldn’t be just one small chiropractic office in Geneva NY, we had to mainstream and modernize Chiropractic in NY as a whole. Hence Northeast Pain Solutions came to light, we now have 3 locations serving individuals from Geneva to Rochester, and our goals do not stop there. Our mission is to continue to invest in modern technology, growth, and education and serve our patients to the best of our ability. We pride ourselves on being evidence-based clinics that use modern tools in addition to the benefits of what many would consider “traditional” chiropractic. Through this model, we can help thousands of individuals yearly overcome muscular skeletal injuries and pain.
