WELCOME FROM

THE PRESIDENT

Connecting for the Greater Good (and Making Lemonade) Keith Higgs, GAWP President

W

elcome to the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP)’s 2020 Virtual Fall Conference Series. We had high hopes that (by now) we would have been able to meet in person on Jekyll Island for an extended Fall Conference, after connecting for our Virtual Annual Conference; however, COVID-19 has yet to release its grasp on the State of Georgia, America, and the world for that matter. With that being said, the old saying holds truer than ever: when the situation gives you lemons, the best thing you can do is make lemonade. I try to be optimistic and see the positive in most things. As I was looking at the session line-up for this year’s Fall Conference, I realized that we usually concentrate on the operators at the Spring and Fall Conferences. You will see that even in the virtual world, this year is no different. What is different is that – because we have to present the sessions virtually – we can actually reach more operators and lab analysts. Most utilities like ours have a certain amount of money budgeted for conferences; this usually limits us to hosting only a handful of operators and lab analysts. If you take the money budgeted for registration and travel expenses, you can actually allow more operators to experience the Fall Conference. In an effort to reach even more operators this fall, we are having the first ever Midnight Operator Appreciation session – scheduled from midnight to 2:00 a.m. on Thursday night, October 15 – to connect with the group of unsung water professionals that tend to be almost forgotten. These night owls keep watch over our water and wastewater facilities while the rest of us are fast asleep. Our Program Committee has worked very hard to put together a diverse program to pique the interest of our members. We hope that our GAWP family enjoys the conference and are continuing to stay safe and well during these times. Thank you for all you do as water professionals as we all continue to make lemonade out of a very strange year.

MESS AGE FROM

THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the 2020 Virtual Conference Series Pam Burnett, Executive Director, GAWP

T

he year 2020 has been a year of adjustment and learning for all of us. If you had asked me in January if we would be able to operate our conferences completely online, I would have told you I couldn’t imagine it happening; however, sometimes the universe has other plans and you just have to roll up your sleeves, put on your thinking cap, and figure out how to get things done. Here we are: ready to embark on our second online conference this year. We are all missing the comradery and sense of community we get at the in-person conference but I’m really pleased with how we’ve all managed to ‘make lemonade’ and pivot to online events. For this conference, we wanted to try something different so the idea of the ‘conference series’ was born. We are hoping that spreading sessions out over several weeks will allow more of you to attend, and fi t these sessions into your schedule, without having to take entire days off of work. I’d love to get your feedback on how you feel about this way of doing things – you can always reach me via email at pburnett@gawp.org. I hope you enjoy the sessions you attend and come away with great information in addition to your recertification points! An extra-special thank you to Trooper Smith and Sarah Skinner, who worked really hard to pull this conference together.

Sometimes the universe has other plans and you just have to roll up your sleeves, put on your thinking cap, and figure out how to get things done.

VIRTUAL CONFERENCE

FAQs

GAWP VIRTUAL FALL CONFERENCE SERIES

Why does my video have to be on?

22

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual training was not an option for receiving recertification points. Since we’ve all had to make adjustments this year in order to provide training opportunities for the water sector, the Georgia Board of Examiners for the Certification of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators and Laboratory Analysts has made an allowance for virtual training; however, in order to receive your points, we need to physically see you attending the sessions so your video camera must be on and you must be visible on camera. Please do not aim the camera at the ceiling, off to the side, etc. If you need to step away for moment that is fine but you do need to be present and visible on camera. Do you really have to see my face on screen? Yes, we really do! If your video isn’t on, or you aren’t visible in the video screen, we cannot award you points for the session(s).

What if I am viewing the session with others at my facility, who have registered? Can we have multiple people logged in on one account? If you have a group of attendees at your location, who will be sharing a room (or rooms) to participate in sessions for the Virtual Fall Conference Series, please visit the conference registration page (www.gawp.org/events), click on the Annual Conference registration link, and scroll down the page to find the ‘Groups’ option to fill out the group participation form. You can call the office (770-618-8690) or email memberservices@gawp.org for more assistance. Is there a recertification points form? No, there isn’t a form that you need to fill out. We will have a record of everyone that signed on to watch the session, including how long you were online, so you need to be there for the full two-hour session (there will be no partial points awarded). Click here to return to Table of Contents

How do you know what sessions I attend?

Will you be mailing my points certificate?

We are using the Zoom platform for our conference and will have a record of everyone who attends each session. We will compare this list with session registrations and attendees who registered and were visible online for the session will get a points certificate (two points per two-hour session). You will get a separate certificate for each session you register for and attend. GAWP staff will be monitoring the sessions to make sure you are visible on camera and will record the gallery view of attendees, in case there is any dispute about points being awarded.

We will not be sending certificates in the mail; they will be emailed to you at the email address you provided when you registered.

What will you do with the recorded sessions? The session recordings will be saved and only used as a reference if we need to confirm attendance for recertification points.

When will I get my points certificate(s)? GAWP staff will work to provide you with your certificate(s) within two weeks of each session you attend. If you attended multiple sessions, you will get the certificates in multiple emails. What if I think the points certificate is wrong? If you did not receive a points certificate for a session you attended, please contact us via email at memberservices@gawp.org. We will reference staff session notes and the session recording to verify/investigate.
