*Testing by Future Thinking.

Treating decking can be a time consuming job, but with the Cuprinol PowerPad you can add colour and protection to your decking in a fraction of the time it takes with a brush. The PowerPad combines the benefits of both a brush and a pad – the bristles get right into the grooves of your decking while the pad glides over the surface leaving a supersmooth and even finish. Use it with the specially formulated semi-transparent PowerPad Decking Stain, which will effectively cover the grey of the wood and protect it from the weather – keeping your decking looking good for longer. Recent testing revealed that 77% of people who tried the Cuprinol PowerPad said it gave their decking a better overall appearance and finish than the leading branded competitor’s product*. LEFT Cuprinol PowerPad, £25.59; Cuprinol PowerPad Decking Stain available in Boston Teak, Golden Maple, Hampshire Oak and Natural Oak, £13.29 for 1ltr.

USING COLOUR | DECORATING

Colour confidence Using blocks of different colour is this year’s biggest decorating trend. You can change the look and mood of a room with this remarkably powerful tool.

INSPIRATION

Using colour

in your home

Colour blocking is a key look this year. Try mixing bold shades in unexpected ways to highlight features in your home

Choosing colours with confidence need not be a daunting task. Pull together a mood board or a scrapbook of colours from magazines and photographs. Use anything that appeals to you in some way to create a visual library of colours that you enjoy.

COMBINATIONS

Either opt for colours from the same family, colours that are opposites or tonal colours. Have a look at a colour wheel online to see where your choices fall. Look at room schemes in books, magazines, online and at friends’ homes for colour combinations that work for you. Paint manufacturers can help you choose combinations as they often group colours that sit well together.

LIGHTING

Light plays an important role in whether a colour works in a room or not, so always test your paint in-situ. Try it on different walls and in different light to make sure you are happy with the look. Remember there is a world of difference between overhead electric lights and natural light from early morning to dusk.

Blues

Blue is considered a restful, cool colour and is often used in bedrooms and bathrooms. For a dynamic alternative try a teal shade in your kitchen. This bluegreen colour creates a sophisticated contemporary look. Team with crisp, clean whites for a chic finish.

Q&A Can I use a bold colour in my compact kitchen?

Walls in Acrylic Matt Emulsion in Canton, £27.50 for 2.5ltr; stool in Acrylic Eggshell in Baked Cherry, £37.50 for 2.5ltr; The Little Greene Paint Company, 0845 880 5855, thelittlegreene.com.

Just because your kitchen is small it doesn’t mean you need to avoid big colour. Blues are associated with light and space so could be a great choice for your kitchen. Small rooms can be made to feel bigger using cool colours as they tend to make walls look further away. If you want to add warmth avoid greyblues and go for a green-blue, such as this Canton shade (left).

Expert tip ‘People love blue because it’s fresh, it can make a room feel bigger, and it works very well with natural finishes. If you’re afraid that a blue will be too cold, opt for one with green in it – duck-egg blues, powder blues and teals are actually warm colours and they have all the versatility and freshness of their cooler counterparts.’ David Mottershead, The Little Greene Paint Company.

Greens

‘Try introducing shades of green into unexpected places. Wallpapering inside a cupboard or behind some shelves can make an interesting alternative to a feature wall. Olive greens and aubergine are complementary colours that work perfectly together, bringing the outside in, and creating a modern and elegant aesthetic.’

Greens offer a huge range of shades, from earthy moss, olive and apple to zingy mint and lime. It is a calm and refreshing colour so is ideal in a hallway, living room or study. Q&A How do I combine colour and pattern?

Pattern is an integral part of any room scheme. Look at combining patterned fabrics or wallpapers in similar shades to bring the look together. Try and balance the scale of pattern so different designs are not competing. Let a larger pattern take centre stage and choose a less powerful pattern to sit alongside it. Once you have chosen a patterned wallpaper, use the colours in it as the palette for the rest of the room.

Yellows

From muted mustards to citrus tones, yellow is an optimistic colour that will add warmth to a cool room. Experiment with the light to find the shade that works in your setting and does not disappear in the sunlight. It’s perfect for a welcoming hallway or bedroom.

Q&A How do I give my bedroom a contemporary edge?

Yellow is a sunny colour in the morning and is warm at night, so it’s an ideal choice for bedrooms. Keep the shade contemporary – avoid soft lemon and choose a bold, punchy tone that leaps off the wall. Fresh yellow can create a sharp, architectural look when teamed with steel grey (above).

36

AUGUST 2011 GOODHOMES

GHO_0811_Colour.indd 36

Expert tip ‘Yellow made its comeback last year and is an important trend colour. More degraded shades create a welcoming broad wall effect while intense tones are perfect for accenting or zoning areas of a room, such as alcoves. If you are a little shy with colour try painting the inside of your cupboards, so that each time you open the doors you get a lovely hit of sunshine.’

Pinks

Pink adds elegance to a room and oozes glamour. From soft pinks to dynamic fuchsia shades, it is a firm favourite for bedrooms but also works well in living rooms and bathrooms. It is perhaps best avoided in a dining room as it is said to suppress your appetite.

Q&A

Shop the look Sherpa Pink fabric, £20 per m, Next.

1

2

Judy Smith, Crown.

3

How can I use pink in a living room?

Pink is often thought of as a feminine colour, which might not be ideal in a shared living room. Try toning down the girly associations by styling it with silvers, blacks, greys or chocolate brown. To keep the look unisex steer away from soft pink and go for bolder plum shades.

Expert tip ‘Chalky pinks are really fashionable at the moment. An up-to-the-minute way of using them is to balance their softness with tougher colours and textures. Introducing contrasts using chrome, wooden flooring and crisp linen fabrics will give soft pinks an edgier look. Don’t be afraid to bring in strong grey tones and even touches of charcoal and black.’

Neutrals

Left wall in Espresso wallpaper with gold flecks, £28.95 per roll; middle wall in Ash wallpaper, £26.95 per roll; both the Livingstones collection at Grandeco, 01892 700730, grandeco.co.uk.

Neutrals create a feeling of space and light so are perfect for small or dark rooms. Natural light plays a huge part in selecting the right shade – opt for cool whites in bright rooms and creams in darker rooms.

Expert tip ‘A palette of neutrals makes the perfect backdrop for any scheme. The serenity of an interior scheme lies in the subtlety and contrast of tone and textural combinations. Monochrome loves reflective surfaces, such as glossy lacquer or silky polished plaster, and contrasting textures, such as the combination of linen, lace and velvet.’

How do I use neutrals and still create the wow factor?

Neutrals have an unfair reputation of being an easy option but they are ideal for providing a blank canvas for statement furniture, feature walls and accessories. A strong accent colour used sparingly will lift a neutral scheme. Add interest with textures in fabrics, flooring and furniture.

This charming boutique hotel, located in the picturesque lanes of St Martin’s, is the ideal setting for a peaceful break. The 12th century house has been thoughtfully restored to offer 24 elegant guest rooms decorated with plush accessories. The tranquil bedroom we stayed in (above) is decorated with provincial-style furniture and wooden cladded walls. A soft colour palette sets a relaxed mood and slatted blinds add to the restful feel. The use of fabrics on the bedside tables and around the four-poster bed softens the whitepainted furniture. We found modern fittings and stone floor tiles in our en suite bathroom. We loved the hotel’s welcoming dining room, which has old leather chests stacked in every corner, and enjoyed drinking a glass of wine in the beautiful country garden. 65 years of wow for your walls

his year, Graham & Brown, the UK’s leading wallpaper brand, celebrates its 65th anniversary. Over the past 65 years, the wallpaper maestros have helped Britain – and the rest of the world – transform their walls with imaginative design and daring colour. We take a look at where it all started.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Graham & Brown’s heritage dates back to 1946, when good friends Harold Graham and Henry Brown started printing wallpaper in Blackburn, Lancashire. Britons were emerging from the war with an optimistic determination to make the best of things – and where better to start than with their homes? Taking a risk, the two budding entrepreneurs started the business at a time of severe paper shortages, but cleverly procured a large supply of surplus metallic paper, which had been used in the war to foil enemy radar. With a printing and embossing machine, and using their homes as canvases, the two men began a very British wallpaper revolution.

CHANGING TIMES

In the 1980s, wallpaper dropped out of favour. Harold and Henry’s sons, Roger Graham and David Brown, took a gamble and invested in a new printing process known as expanded vinyl. The result was a new type of textured wallpaper, which they named Superfresco. Easy to hang (and remove), keep clean, and able to be painted, the revolutionary decorating concept became Above: Poppy an immediate bestseller. MEET THE DESIGNER Paula Taylor, Colour Specialist

2 3

When did you join Graham & Brown? After graduating, I worked in textile design before moving to the design studio at Graham & Brown in 1995. I have developed various ranges for customers worldwide and worked alongside designers such as Linda Barker, Wayne Hemmingway and Julien Macdonald on their collections. For the past 12 years, I have worked on the design and colour trends for Graham & Brown. What is it like to work for Graham & Brown? Graham & Brown is a fun and dynamic place to work. My job is very diverse – no two days are the same. One day I could travel to London to meet up with one of our key designers, the next I could be attending a trend seminar, or presenting a new range to a customer. Some days are purely spent at the computer working out colour combinations for the new collections. As we are a global company I could be working on a Russian palette one day and the next day it could be French! What is your favourite product in the new collection? I love Graham & Brown’s paint range. It was exciting to work on the concept, the colour palette and the names. You can have so much fun with a ‘Damson in Distress’ or a ‘Princess to Be’. Each one has its own personality and being able to buy paint that coordinates with our wallpapers just makes it so much easier for people to get creative. The latest Graham & Brown wallpaper collection features some of my favourite designs, hot off the trend pages, including illustrated and handpainted techniques. To find out more about Graham & Brown, call 0800 328 8452, visit grahambrown.com or go to superfrescoeasy.com.

Roomy storage units are a must to keep bedrooms clutter-free. Classic backdrop

No vintage-style scheme is complete without a pretty wallpaper. Choose floral or damask designs in muted shades to create a look that echoes styling from years gone by. Arthouse’s Vintage collection boasts 25 gorgeous designs, including Twilight (above) in five shades.

▼ Daily read

With its distressed frame and classic words of wisdom, this smart print is the perfect buy to add charm and character to your space. Live Well Laugh Often framed print, £14.99, The Contemporary Home, 0845 130 8229, tch.net.

Expert advice

‘Individual pieces of furniture that contrast with each other are ideal for evoking a wonderful antique feel and can add a focal feature to a vintage-style bedroom.’ Poonam Sharma, purchasing director, Dibor, 0871 455 2322, dibor.co.uk.

▶ Pretty bedlinen

Go for patterned bedlinen in a classic floral design for a vintage feel. Don’t be afraid of the pattern clashing with your wallpaper – contrasting patterns can work beautifully together when they share a similar colour palette or are separated by a bold shade.

hen Nick Turnbull and Rhona Peacock found a 19th century barn in rural North Yorkshire, complete with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside, they were instantly attracted to the property. The only thing that their new home was missing was an interior. ‘A lofty chimney bearing the property’s original date, 1874, added to the appeal, and we were thrilled to find an original millstone in the garden that would make a great garden feature,’ says Rhona. ‘We loved the countryside location and the barn’s exterior but » 64

We got a specialist stonemason to restore it. We hadn’t budgeted for it but the individuality it lends to the kitchen makes up for the extra expense.’

inside it was a different story.’ Despite being confronted with an empty shell, four walls and a dirt floor, Nick and Rhona could see the barn’s potential. The barn was part of a working farm that Nick bought as an investment. ‘Cows and pigs were still in residence when we first viewed it!’ laughs Rhona. ‘We sold off the other barns and farm buildings to help finance our barn conversion. We knew this empty space offered an opportunity to create a unique family home from scratch.’

The couple’s main objective was to design a layout that allowed the natural beauty of the outdoors to complement the traditional character of the interior. ‘Our first priority was to make sure the views could be seen from every room. We were also determined to maintain the original features, including the high wooden beams in the living room and the stone wall in the kitchen. In collaboration with an architect we set to work visualising the rooms and dividing up the open floor space.’

CREATING A LAYOUT

The couple’s designs for the ground floor included an open-plan kitchendining area leading into an imposing living room. A solid oak staircase with glass panels would not only allow light to flood through the house but also provide a blueprint for the overall » GOODHOMES AUGUST 2011

‘I wanted to get a feel for the interior before making decorating decisions’ interior design concept. ‘The materials used in the fabric of the building informed its interior evolution. By capitalising on original features, working with natural light and incorporating modern additions, the skeleton of a home began to emerge.’ The ground floor plans also incorporated a playroom, two utility rooms and a cloakroom. The plans for the second floor outlined a family bathroom, a main bedroom complete with an en suite bathroom, and a bedroom each for daughters Betty and Martha. ‘I’ve always wanted to create a bathroom with the relaxing spa atmosphere you’d find in a fivestar hotel. A wet room was a real luxury,’ says Rhona. A self-contained guest room with a space-saving en suite shower was designed for the third floor of the building. 68

‘It was a remarkably smooth transition from old barn to new home. Fortunately we weren’t in any rush to move in; we stayed in our old home until this one was ready. We were blessed with local builders, electricians and plumbers who proved diligent and professional, so I never felt out of control,’ says Rhona.

CONSIDERED CHOICES

Once the plans had been translated into reality and the family could move in, Nick and Rhona were faced with decorating decisions. ‘We finally moved in three years after buying the property. I wanted to get a feel for the interior before making radical decisions – I needed to see what the atmosphere was like and how the light influenced the rooms by day and evening.’ The family waited another year to raise the funds to complete the living

room. Until then, a thick floor-to-ceiling curtain divided the dining and kitchen area shutting off the unfinished room. Once the curtain came down on the newly completed living room, Nick and Rhona were confronted with an unexpected problem. ‘The lofty space needed a fireplace as a focal point.’ They chose a cassette-style oak burner, which meant a faux chimney breast had to be created to accommodate the unit. ‘It was something we hadn’t planned for but once it was constructed it inspired me to introduce a solid block of colour.’ Rhona chose a dramatic shade of deep plum for the chimney »

‘Nick is passionate about wood and his influence can be seen throughout the house, not simply in the preserved original timber but also the decision to include oak flooring, door frames and bespoke beams throughout. Nick’s grandfather was a skilled furniture maker – he once worked for renowned craftsman Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson, who signed his furniture with the mouse trademark. Even though oak wasn’t the cheapest option, Nick’s inherited feel for timber certainly influenced our choices when planning the fabric of the building. My style is definitely modern. I prefer a bold look and I don’t like fancy schemes. Nick was against the idea of us having an Aga but I got my way in the end! Fortunately, we do tend to agree about most things.’

breast. ‘It not only adds impact, it also led me to experiment with contrasting colours and patterns inspired by the natural world.’

BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL

Using her eye for bold colour, vivid prints and patterned fabrics, Rhona has created distinctive room schemes throughout the house. ‘My sister and I used to run an interiors shop and quite a few pieces of furniture and soft furnishings came from there. I don’t spends hours looking at samples, I usually know exactly what I want.’ Five years after viewing an empty barn, Nick and Rhona are more than happy with the house they’ve created. ‘The big advantage to starting from scratch is getting a house tailor-made to your family’s needs. It may have taken time to create a bespoke home out of an old barn but, looking back, it was well worth the wait.’ GH 70

Learning curve Did you go over budget?

‘There are bound to be unforeseen circumstances requiring extra funds with barn conversions. I was not prepared to compromise on quality so we either borrowed extra if we needed to or waited until we could afford what we wanted. My advice to anyone considering a barn conversion is plan way above what you think it will cost to avoid a shock.’ Did you have difficulties with planning consent?

‘We put in a request to add a second floor to the living room. It was refused and, in retrospect, we’re glad because it would have diminished the impact of the room. Existing windows and doors can dictate how you design the interior but your architect will be aware of restrictions.’

ebecca Millward had always loved her childhood home in Leamington Spa, but her career took her to London, where she lived for six years. ‘I really wanted to leave London and move back to my hometown. I grew up in a rambling Victorian villa there,’ she says. ‘One of my memories as a child is walking round the streets with my parents giving houses marks out of ten!’

A LUCKY FIND

While visiting her parents, Rebecca came across an advertisement in the local paper for a four-storey Georgian house up for sale. She didn’t know the small street it was located on, but it was within walking distance of the centre of town, so she went to find it. ‘The house was empty so I had a look through the windows. I was met with a spacious open-plan kitchendining area on the basement level, and a huge room on the first floor with a fantastic fireplace and large windows at the front and back. I immediately fell in love with it!’ »

DECORATING ADVICE

Where does your eye for art come from? ‘I love art and architecture. I used to work in an auction house and I have many happy childhood memories of visiting art galleries and stately homes, and that has definitely seeped into my home.’ How did you choose your colours? ‘I move towards pale pinks, greens, greys and lilacs. I think it’s important to use colours that have the same tone so you’re not walking from a dark room into a light room. I collect paintings and posters to liven up neutral walls.’

After making some enquiries, Rebecca discovered that the house had been on the market for nearly two years, and was currently owned by a relocation company. She put her house in London on the market and received two offers at her asking price straight away. Sadly, when Rebecca put her offer in for the Leamington Spa house, she was beaten by another couple’s offer. ‘I put it behind me and began my search again, but nothing ever quite matched up to this house. Then my luck changed – I was on holiday in the Lake District with my mum when I got a call saying the couple had pulled out of the sale. My offer was accepted and I received the keys on my 30th birthday.’

ESSENTIAL RENOVATIONS

Rebecca started to renovate the house while living with her parents, who luckily still lived locally. ‘The first port of call was to sort out the central heating and then the electrics. I had been told that the boiler was in working 74

order, but I soon found out that it wasn’t.’ Originally the water tank and boiler were positioned underneath the stairs on the open-plan basement level and were an eyesore. Rebecca bought a new boiler and the water tank was moved to a cupboard on the landing to free up space for the washing machine underneath the stairs. Rebecca also had the radiators moved. ‘I had scaffolding put up at the garden end of the house as it was so covered in ivy you could barely see the windows.’ Once the ivy had been removed, the outside walls needed repainting and the roof also had to »

be repaired. ‘The porch floor was rough concrete so I had it tiled and I had new glass with a star motif fitted into the front door. I put a patio down in the garden and had a summerhouse built.’

BESPOKE FURNISHINGS

In the hallway and living room the floorboards had been sanded so often over the years that they had worn very thin and were unsafe in places. Rebecca sourced solid oak floorboards from a supplier in France and had them put down by a local carpenter who had a workshop across the road from the house. A friend of his transported the wood from France, which helped keep Rebecca’s costs to a minimum. ‘The carpenter also built the kitchen for

me – the old kitchen was bright purple! I love Shaker-style units so I designed the kitchen myself with that in mind. I had the cabinets made from mdf with solid wood shelves inside, and painted them in a warm cream shade.’ The work surface area was extended by building a wall, which hides an enormous larder. Rebecca chose a large butler’s sink and a plate rack to go above it.

DECORATING CHOICES

Rebecca replaced the black-painted terracotta floor tiles with pale ceramic tiles to keep the room light and airy. ‘I’m now regretting this decision slightly as my fiancé and our cats keep leaving footprints on them!’ As a big fan of 1920s art, she bought the »

‘I made a decision to take down two doors and a wall to open up the downstairs corridor. I also put in a balustrade along the stairs, which automatically made it appear lighter and more spacious. I love the open-plan kitchen. I painted it white for a fresh and clean feel, as there is a danger of a basement space looking too dark. The kitchen used to be positioned at the back of the house but it didn’t work for me. I moved it to the front of the house so that the dining table at the other end overlooks the garden.’

ROOM IN DETAIL

‘The bathroom is possibly my favourite room of the house. I didn’t want cold tiles – my aim was to create a room with a bath in it rather than a ‘bathroom’ so to speak. I chose a solid oak floor and tongue and groove wall panelling with a shelf above it. It took me ages to find the right paint colour for the walls and I painted the underside of the bath blue, too. The curtains and lace panel are both from Laura Ashley. I found the chest of drawers in an Emmaus charity shop. I particularly love the material on the little French boot stool, which I bought at a market in London.’ ABOVE Rebecca bought the large poster from a museum in Paris. She found the picture frame in a skip outside an auction house.

‘Beautiful art need not cost a fortune, you can find bargains at local auctions’ railway advertising posters hanging above the dining table from The Railway Museum in York. ‘When you buy posters from exhibitions or museums and frame them, not only do you have art on your walls but a visual reminder of a good day out. Having beautiful art need not cost a fortune, you can get some relative bargains at local auctions and charity shops. I collect all sorts of picture frames – sometimes I just need to get glass cut for them or I’ll paint the frame.’ Rebecca’s last big project was to revive the dated bathroom, which had a leaking toilet and walls that needed replastering. She decided the room had to be completely gutted and asked her brother to take a sledgehammer to it! Now it is her favourite room in the house. ‘I bought a roll top bath as I have always loved them.’ She darkened the colour of the floorboards in both the

bathroom and the living room using a wood stain in American Walnut.

FINAL TOUCHES

Rebecca wanted to create a relaxing feel in the main bedroom and used a soothing colour palette of pink and green. ‘It’s a favourite combination of mine,’ she says. The pink walls are luckily a hit with her fiancé, too. She put in a new fireplace surround to replace the old one that had been made from painted chipboard. After six months of hard work, Rebecca moved in to her new home. ‘I have loved the process of seeing it evolve from a neglected house into a place that I love. In the future, I hope to get stuck into a new property with my fiancé. This house has given me lots of ideas and has been an outlet for my creativity but now I am after a new challenge!’ GH

Who works here?

I’m Julia Miller and I live in a Victorian terraced house in Cheltenham with my husband Ian, a chartered surveyor, our son Jack, 10, daughter Kitty, 6, and our greyhound Peggy. I started collecting vintage fabrics and homewares when I bought my first house at the age of 21. It’s an interest I’ve inherited from my mother, who also spends her time searching through second-hand shops and car boot sales for vintage collectables. I use the material to make cushions and the offcuts for patchwork and illustrations.

Functional space

The summerhouse is a comfortable and inviting place for Julia to make her soft furnishings. A small storage room next to her workroom has replaced the old garden shed and is used to store the family’s bikes.

Julia stores her fabrics in this cabinet, which she found in a secondhand shop. She painted it in Farrow & Ball’s Borrowed Light (01202 876141, farrow-ball.com).

I used to work in a room in the basement but I would often end up moving to the kitchen table where there is more light and space. The kitchen is my favourite room in the house and although it was great to work there, it’s the busiest family room and I was forever having to clear away my creations. It became apparent that I needed a dedicated space for my work.

How did you find the right summerhouse?

We searched on the internet for a garden workroom but they all seemed to be above our price limit. I was just about to give up the search when I visited a friend whose neighbour had a potting shed. I liked the style of it so I contacted the supplier who happened to be local. I was so pleased to find they were able to provide us with what we wanted within our budget.

How did you plan the project? I sketched out the layout that I thought would work. The builder was then able to interpret my ideas

GHO_0711_House3.indd 83

and we finalised the dimensions before we went ahead. We already had a shed at the bottom of the garden that housed our bikes so we needed to incorporate storage for them too. The design consisted of two rooms; a large workroom and a smaller space for the six bikes.

Did you have any problems?

The whole process was incredibly straightforward. The summerhouse is built on a raft system, which meant we didn’t need to dig foundations. The builders removed the old shed and levelled out the ground. The structure itself arrived flat packed and was put up in a day. The project was also simplified by the fact that we didn’t need planning permission due to its height and distance from the house.

Do you regret losing some garden space?

Not at all, I’m happy with the space we have. It’s enough garden for us to enjoy as a family without needing too much maintenance. I share an allotment with a friend, which » GOODHOMES AUGUST 2011

Julia found the wicker chair discarded in the street she lives in. She has made the cushion covers.

‘I find it very inspiring to surround myself with fabrics’ provides us with plenty of hard work and vegetables.

Did you have a deadline?

Our priority was to finish the summerhouse in time for our wedding reception. We planned to use it to serve tea and cake using my collection of vintage crockery. As soon as we could get our hands on it we decorated the exterior to make sure it was ready in good time. 84

AUGUST 2011 GOODHOMES

Has the project been a success? Yes, I love the summerhouse. I find it very inspiring surrounding myself with my fabrics. It’s a lovely place to work and it’s a good way to separate myself from housework. It’s also filled with wonderful memories of our wedding day. We were able to make my old workroom in the basement into a second guest bedroom to accommodate family and friends when they come to stay.

What inspires you?

I love fabric designs from the 1930s through to the 1970s. My favourite designer is Lisa Stickley and I was buying Cath Kidston fabrics by mail order before she opened her first shop. I’m also keen on crochet – if I’m not sewing I’m crocheting! ✻ For one-off textile pieces and cushions contact Julia at vintageheaven.blogspot.com. GH

PROPERTY PROJECT

Island living Veronica and Stephen Worrall turned a dated kitchen into a sociable space by adding a functional breakfast bar BEFORE

e bought this house for its wonderful sea views. Although the kitchen was the room that needed the most updating, we gave priority to the roof and the upstairs, and the kitchen was our final project. I looked everywhere for inspiration and cut out articles from magazines to create an ideas portfolio. Our designer, Dan Barr, looked at my scrapbook and translated my wish list into a stunning design. I used masking tape to outline the position of the units on the floor and walked around, acting out cooking! I love the finished design – we spend hours sitting at the island. It’s transformed the way we live. Veronica Worrall

THE PROJECT

■ To replace a worn out kitchen with a design that incorporates an island and breakfast bar. ■ The kitchen and dining area were linked by knocking out the old kitchen cupboards and replacing them with an island in the centre of the room. ■ A false ceiling was added to hide the ducting from the extractor and to fit ceiling lights. ■ Veronica settled on a classic look with a limited colour palette to ensure the space would not date quickly. ■ Floor-to-ceiling units house appliances, including the fridge, freezer, and both steam and conventional ovens. ■ The couple chose traditionalstyle cabinets with sleek contemporary handles. Deep pull-out drawers and cupboards ensure the work surfaces are kept free of clutter.

SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE Veronica says: ’Keep your ideas in a scrapbook so you start to get a feel for how you want your room to look. Then put your wish list and yourself in front of a kitchen expert, who will be able to interpret your thoughts into a working design. I know that some people dread the thought of a kitchen makeover, but I urge everyone to just enjoy the process. After all, you’re spending a huge amount of money and most people get the chance to create their dream kitchen only once.’ THE BUDGET Cabinets..................£13,800 Worktops..................£3,360 Appliances................£4,320 Installation................£3,600 Sink and tap.................£672

UTILITY AREA

The same flooring and cabinets have been used in the utility room. A large butler’s sink is ideal for handwashing laundry.

VINYL FLOORING

With an eye on her budget, Veronica opted for vinyl flooring, which she finds very comfortable underfoot. It’s also durable, stain resistant and easy to clean. Continuing the same flooring into the dining area, utility room and hallway creates a sense of flow between the rooms.

I have a large solid panel radiator in my bathroom – is it possible to add a towel rail to it and what’s the easiest way of doing this? Drilling or glueing a towel rail onto your radiator will almost certainly damage it so avoid doing it at all costs. Bisque’s new chrome magnetic towel rail is a great alternative as it fixes on instantly and can be repositioned wherever you like on your radiator. It can hold towels up to 5kg in weight.

CAPACITY The size of the drum should be taken into consideration when shopping around. If you

often wash bulky or heavy items, look for a machine with an 8kg or 9kg capacity. SPIN SPEED This varies from model to model with some boasting 1,600 revolutions per minute (rpm) or even 1,800rpm, but as a guide 1,200rpm is standard and adequate for most loads. Most machines will autoselect the spin speed depending on the programme.

ENERGY RATINGS All machines have an energy efficiency and performance grading A-G, with A being the most economical. You may now see models that are A+, A++, or even A+++ rated or state A-20% or A-30%, which means the machine is 20% or 30% more efficient than an A-rated model. Some models include settings that save energy by washing at 30°C or lower.

PROGRAMMES You may pay a bit more for a large choice of programmes. Expect to see handwash programmes, economy, which automatically reduces the temperature, and quick/express washes that can wash a load in just 15 minutes. Some washing machines have variable temperature control, so you can select a lower temperature for a load that is not particularly unclean.

» INSIDE STORY: SEW YOU

One of a kind Abi Manifold designs and hand-makes personalised textile gifts and homewares

Q

What did you do before setting up Sew You? I’ve always sewn as a hobby, but before I set up Sew You I worked in learning and development for 15 years.

Abi creates bespoke textile products, including bunting.

Q

When did you start up the business? When my daughter Maya, now 2, was born I made her a bunting banner with her name on it. I handstitched it to while away hours spent breastfeeding. A friend then asked for bunting for her baby, then a friend-of-afriend. I wasn’t consciously starting a business. The turning point was when I started sewing for people I didn’t know, and had to work out proper costings for what I did. I registered as self employed while also working at my day job. I kept that up for over a year, sewing on weekends so I could maintain both jobs. At Craig & Rose we know a thing or two about HERITAGE... We are proud to have been manufacturing paint in the UK since 1829. The same year that: • Bollinger first started making Champagne; • Perth, Australia was founded; • The Metropolitan Police were founded by Sir Robert Peel; • The first ever Oxford versus Cambridge Boat Race took place; • Levi Strauss was born, the founder of denim ‘jeans’

We are proud to have such a heritage and we would like to share this with you by putting some quality colour into your life using our beautifully hand crafted paints. We have 112 to choose from in this range alone. Visit Craig & Rose at www.craigandrose.com or call us on 01383 740011 for more information.
