Truck drivers To head car convoy?

U

sing wireless technology to link a road train, in which a lead truck controls a convoy of vehicles driving behind it, is now technically feasible. According to Volvo Trucks, the technology was demonstrated at the conclusion of the Safe Road Trains for the Environment (SARTRE) project – in which the Swedish truck-maker was a participant. Although it may take some time for wireless road trains to become a reality, Volvo said the technology brought about through the project could be put to use for other purposes to make the traffic environment considerably safer in the near future. The EU-financed SARTRE project recently presented the results of three years of research and trials. Representatives from the EU Commission and experts in transport technology from Europe, the US and Japan got to see a fully functioning wireless road train in operation at Volvo’s proving ground in Sweden. In the lead was a Volvo FH truck, closely followed by another Volvo truck and three cars. The building of test vehicles, car-tocar communication and sensors for the control of nearby vehicles has been underway for three years. Volvo claimed these technical achievements now make it possible for multiple vehicles in a road train to integrate smoothly with other traffic on public motorways. The entire road train is interconnected through wireless technology, which ensures the trailing cars

“All the vehicles in the road train have a roof-mounted antenna so they can receive information from the lead vehicle’s computer system,” Ekfjorden said. “For instance, if the lead truck starts braking, all the other vehicles in the train brake at exactly the same time.” The cars’ fuel consumption drops the most as a result of the reduced air drag in the compact convoy of vehicles, but the lead truck’s fuel consumption is also cut. This will make it profitable for haulage firms to provide lead trucks – vehicles that join the convoy could pay a fee, thus benefiting the truck operator. In addition, the results of the SARTRE project show a truck with a trained driver and comprehensive equipment package contributes to heightened traffic safety that actually benefits other road users. “It’s fantastic that a truck driver can drive from A to B with at least one car trailing behind, while at the same time cutting both fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. And, not least, that he can replace several car drivers and thus boost safety,” said Lennart Pilskog, director public affairs at Volvo Trucks. However, there are still challenges to overcome. Reliability needs to be improved, which must be on a par with that of an aircraft’s autopilot before road trains can emerge as a truly viable transport solution on public roads. Plus, it has to be absolutely clear who is responsible for driving a trailing vehicle, and exactly when that responsibility is transferred.

Additionally, the TC heard how vehicles operated by the business had attracted mechanical prohibitions and

were found to be overloaded, while drivers had committed offences. Mr and Mrs Brady applied through RJB Transport Ltd for a new licence after the authority held by Way Ahead Couriers Ltd was revoked by the traffic commissioner. However, prior to the revocation they had continued to use discs issued to Way Ahead Couriers Ltd, despite the company having ceased trading three years earlier. Ordering the disqualification of Ronald Brady, Aitken concluded: “I am not prepared to be more lenient to a director who has been so neglectful of his duties and who did not have a proper transport manager in place. There is such a catalogue of failings in this case, it is a bad one, with few redeeming features.” She added: “Traffic commissioners have duties to road safety and the licence undertakings are there to reflect what has to be done to achieve safe operating.”

emperature-controlled distribution specialist Peter Green Chilled has ordered six more New Actros tractor units from Mercedes-Benz, after the first four ordered proved an all-round success. “We’ve had our first New Actros for a month now and the drivers are really pleased with them, not least because they’re so quiet and smooth,” said transport manager Colin Davis. “These trucks are already matching the fleet average in terms of fuel efficiency which, considering they’re still virtually brand new, is very impressive. Once they start to bed in, the mpg performance is only going to get better.”

The new Mercedes-Benz Actros premium long-haul tractor unit range was the star attraction for some of the North-West’s leading road transport operators, at a launch event staged by leading dealer Enza.

Held at the Oulton Park race circuit in Cheshire, the event gave invited guests their first chance to put the vehicle through its paces on UK roads. New Actros is the ultimate premium truck for longdistance transport. From the outset, designers and engineers were determined to provide the best possible comfort, driving dynamics, safety, productivity and operating economy, as well as a sweeping range of cab sizes, engine ratings and options, allowing customers to tailor vehicles perfectly for any application. The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The 81 guests took turns to head out on a 17-mile test drive, carefully chosen to simulate a variety of typical driving conditions. Each of the four demonstrator trucks provided for the event made 10 journeys - a total of almost 700 miles covered on the day. Between journeys, guests also enjoyed ‘hot laps’ of the Oulton Park circuit in two-seater racing cars piloted by professional drivers. TS Euromaster’s parent company, Euromaster Group, has expanded operations into a 17th country, Turkey – the number one European market by volume for truck tyres. Euromaster will be represented in Turkey via a franchised network of Michelin dealers, adding 230 centres to its already extensive European network. The company said this is expected to grow to more than 300 centres in Turkey by the end of 2013. The deal increases the number of Euromaster Group outlets across Europe to 2250 centres, of which approximately 790 are franchised outlets. Peter Fairlie, group sales director at ATS Euromaster, said: “It’s unlikely our car or van fleet customers will venture as far as Turkey by road, but a number of heavy truck customers do. This expansion ensures they will continue to have access to the widest possible European network in the event of a tyre-related breakdown.” Euromaster Group now provides service to customers in Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the UK. In the UK, ATS Euromaster operates exclusively via a wholly-owned network of more than 350 centres, supported by a select number of network partnership agreements with independent dealers in towns where there is currently no ATS Euromaster presence.

he Co-operative Group has become one of the first customers for a dramatically styled aerodynamic truck body launched by Gray & Adams. The Dolphin is so named because its streamlined profile evokes that of the ultra-efficient aquatic mammal often seen in the waters of the Moray Firth, close to Gray & Adams’ Fraserburgh headquarters. Designed to maximise fuelefficiency and thereby cut CO2 emissions, it also features all-new leading-edge cappings that follow the 3D curvature of the roof, and a vortex generator to smooth the airflow around the back of the vehicle. The Co-operative’s two Dolphins were built at Gray & Adams’ Dunfermline production facility and are fitted to 26-tonne Scania chassis with roofmounted, adjustable air deflectors by Hatcher Components. The Carrier Supra 950 refrigeration unit is mounted above the cab roof. And despite the fact that the body’s roofline then tapers towards the rear of the truck, there is still sufficient interior space to accommodate the roll cages used by The Co-operative to transport its frozen and chilled product – in fact, the reduced roof height offers an environmental benefit,

because energy is not wasted on cooling empty and unrequired loadspace. Both vehicles have entered service at The Co-operative Group’s recently opened, £22-million regional distribution centre in Avonmouth, from where they are being used to supply smaller stores and convenience outlets throughout the South-West. Ken Thompson, logistics service transport fleet manager for The Co-

operative Group, said: “We’re always keen to explore any opportunities to cut costs, especially our fuel bill, while at the same time reducing our carbon footprint and improving our environmental profile. “The new Dolphin represents a very exciting development. These vehicles are certainly turning heads and we will be monitoring their performance in terms of fuel efficiency with great interest over the coming months.”

Water Winner for neW actros

W

essex Water is running its first Mercedes-Benz tractor units after the New Actros came out on top in a comprehensive evaluation exercise that involved drivers and other colleagues from the company’s sludge operations team. Mercedes-Benz dealer Pentagon Commercials won the order for the regional water and sewage treatment business’s 10 tractor units, which work with tank trailers. All are 2545 models with ClassicSpace cabs and fuel-efficient 450 bhp engines mated to Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmissions. Wessex Water’s New Actros are now working round the clock, seven days a week, hauling waste from sewage works to larger processing facilities. The company serves an area of 10,000 km2 that includes Dorset, Somerset, Bristol, most of Wiltshire and parts of Gloucestershire and Hampshire. Prior to the arrival of its New Actros, the only truck on the Wessex Water fleet to wear a three-pointed star was an 8x4 Axor 3243K hook-loader, which was supplied by Pentagon last year and is based in Bristol.

Wessex Water group manager for fleet & plant Martin Crocker said: “When the time came to replace the sludge operations team’s previous tractor units, we decided to trial products by three manufacturers – and to give the drivers a key role in the decision-making process. So we went out on the road with the drivers to make sure we had a complete understanding of the operation, then conducted a series of debrief sessions. “The drivers were initially a bit daunted by the prospect of going from a manual gearbox to the fully automated PowerShift 3 transmission of the New Actros. But once they’d tried it, they were quickly won over – the feedback on the Mercedes’ two-pedal system was overwhelmingly positive, while they also loved just about everything else about the cab too. “And while the New Actros was a firm favourite with the drivers, it was also the most fuel-efficient of the demonstration units we tested.” The new tractors are operating from different locations, but the workshop team at Pentagon’s Poole depot will undertake most of the inspections and maintenance. Fuel hike on hold

he Freight Transport Association said it has welcomed the chancellor’s decision to cancel January’s 3p per litre fuel duty increase – but is disappointed he did not go further and abandon all planned rises before the next election and move to reduce fuel duty by 3p a litre. James Hookham, FTA’s managing director, policy & communications said: “This early Christmas present from the chancellor is a good start, but we will not let this issue go. Spiralling fuel costs have a devastating impact on haulage businesses, their customers and ultimately everyone through the price of goods on the shelves, and the campaign for a fairer deal will continue. “January’s rise would have cost a 10 vehicle freight operator around £14,000 - which

could be one employee’s wages. While we are relieved the immediate danger has passed, in order to get the UK back on the road to economic recovery, it is vital we have a cut in fuel duty and a long-term strategy to prevent future rises and uncertainty.” The FTA was quick to point out research commissioned by FairFuel UK from the National Institute for Economic and Social Research (NIESR) has found that a 3p reduction in fuel duty could generate an additional 75 thousand jobs, grow the economy overall by 0.2 per cent at a net cost to the Treasury of £3bn. The FTA said its contention is that taken together, these increases in disposable income for consumers and free cash for businesses would be spent or invested elsewhere in the economy, leading to the re-ignition of economic growth.

Star Letter ON THE NIGHT SHIFT I refer to the letter from Andrew Jones, published in your December issue. I work as an HGV instructor, and am constantly surprised by the way a lot of drivers simply misunderstand the drivers’ hours and working time regulations. Andrew Jones is correct in stating the 10-hour night rule relates to the total working time in a 24-hour period. Breaks and periods of availability do not count towards this. If a driver starts at 3 am on a Monday morning, any work done in the period to 3 am on the following Tuesday morning counts towards this, even if a driver has taken a daily rest period. This is clearly stated in the guidance issued by VOSA. I have encountered many drivers who, like Karen Bancroft, think this relates to the spread over (length of working day). However, this is clearly incorrect, as you can see in the VOSA guidance. Mark Craig Bournemouth

erth-based refrigerated transport specialist McLaughlan Transport Ltd has added another DAF XF105 to its 37-strong fleet. The decision was based on the overall cost of buying and running the model, with an initial batch of three having covered 600,000 km and delivered 10 per cent better kilometres per litre than the fleet average. The latest arrival is a 6x2 mid-lift axle FTG model, which will run with a tri-axle Gray & Adams refrigerated trailer taking fresh produce from Scotland around Europe. With journeys that can see it travel as far afield as Greece and the south of Spain, the new DAF is expected to cover around 180,000 km a year. Managing director George McLaughlan said the XF105 meets all their expectations in cost terms. “It’s competitive in terms of its initial price and is proving to be both fuel efficient and reliable, the latter being particularly important when moving fresh produce and working to timed delivery slots.”

er Royal Highness The Princess Royal, patron of road transport and logistics industry charity Transaid, has commended the organisation for increasing the number and scope of its projects in Africa which has resulted in more people benefitting than ever before. In a speech at Transaid’s annual showcase in Canary Wharf on November 28, guests heard how Transaid has grown its reach over the last year from 11 projects to 17, with its teams now working in nine countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Addressing the 70-strong audience of transport industry executives, hosted by Barclays Corporate, The Princess Royal said: “There is real value in what Transaid does and the ability to grow the impact of the charity’s work is increasing all the time. Transaid has the expertise to make a real difference to many people’s lives in Africa and the continuing support of the industry is crucial to this cause.” Transaid chief executive Gary Forster said: “We are a small, but ambitious charity determined to make a significant difference in the developing world. “We are very grateful to The Princess Royal for her continued patronage, and to all of our

As the charity moves forward we also hope to make our transport and logistics expertise available to other organisations working in Africa, so even more communities can benefit from the solutions we can implement.” Transaid is planning a series of fundraising events to mark its milestone anniversary, including a mix of hiking and cycling events to be held in the UK, Europe and Africa. new survey conducted by road safety and breakdown cover company GEM Motoring Assist revealed just how unhappy Britain’s drivers are with road conditions in the UK. GEM’s latest poll revealed 87 per cent of UK drivers agree that not enough maintenance work or regular inspections are carried out across the country’s roads. What’s more, a mere one per cent of respondents described current road markings as ‘excellent’, and three per cent as ‘very good’, with the majority describing UK road surfaces as ‘poor’. Furthermore, a huge 86 per cent have noticed a greater number of potholes appearing in the last 12 months. More than half blamed the floods earlier in the year for causing road conditions and markings to deteriorate; yet despite the problems, only 19 per cent of drivers said they would happily see a small increase in Vehicle Excise Duty for pothole repair work. David Williams MBE, CEO of GEM Motoring Assist, said: “We know the weather at this time of year really has an effect on our roads, particularly as ice and frost are destructive to road surfaces and can also worsen existing damage. Yet it is up to the government to ensure surface and markings maintenance work is regular to help manage these problems and stop them from getting worse.”

When it comes to white line road markings, more than 76 per cent of drivers said they know of lines that need repainting. Yet, more promisingly, 63 per cent said they are aware of white lines that have been repainted in the last six months. This follows the Road Safety Markings Association’s recent survey, which further highlights the urgent need for improved road markings on motorways and dual carriageways. Vast majority of UK drivers are dissatisfied with the state of British roads

“There is much damning evidence showing the state of our roads is being neglected by the government,” Williams added. “Not only are motorists unhappy with the current conditions, but road safety is seriously compromised when road markings and surfaces are below standard. It is something the government should be addressing well before the UK’s drivers should have to start complaining.” GEM’s poll also revealed 53 per cent of motorists who have driven abroad believe road markings and road conditions are better in other European countries than in the UK.

SURVEY REVEALS YOUNG DRIVER SHORTAGE

river agency ADR Network has found evidence of a serious shortage of younger drivers entering the road transport industry, based on what the firm claims to be the largest report on agency driving ever undertaken. The survey was based on the views of 1000 drivers drawn from across the operating sites of the business. The research was completed in the summer of 2012, with analysis and report writing launched soon after. The firm said the research was undertaken to provide an understanding of the dynamics within the agency driver market place, from the perception of those who work within it. As expected, the age profile of the drivers showed 87 per cent of the workforce were in the 36-60 age group, with only eight per cent of drivers younger than 36. This age profile is seen as being broadly representative of the sector, which suggests a serious shortage of younger people entering the profession. However, the firm said it does acknowledge older drivers are often attracted to agency work because of the flexibility it can provide. But this need for flexibility need not necessarily mean shorter working weeks, as the clear majority of drivers in the survey are keen to work four or more days per week. When agency drivers were asked if they were in favour of the recent Agency

Worker Regulations, a surprising 70 per cent said they did not see any benefit in the regulations. The issue of driver supervision was also explored, with the majority feeling that in their day to day duties, drivers were largely unsupervised, suggesting the professional nature of driving is perhaps underestimated by others. On the topic of CPC training, at the time of the survey the majority of respondents had not started their training. Typical reasons cited were cost and older drivers planning to retire in the near future. Commenting on the survey, ADR Network MD Andrew Waldron said: “We wanted to understand more about the world of agency driving from the perspective of the drivers themselves. “For me, there are two issues here that are probably linked. Firstly, that the role of drivers is perhaps underestimated in terms of just how much responsibility drivers have; and secondly, that we are just not attracting enough young people into the profession. As an industry, there is still much to be done to attract younger people into driving. All the agencies need to unite in this. “We also need support from the government and Schools when it comes to conveying the benefits of driving as a profession,” Waldron added. “It seems crazy that we have a pool of unemployed youngsters, yet a shortage of people coming into the profession.”

olvo Trucks has developed Work Remote - a wireless remote control device that streamlines the load-handling process to speed up the time it takes to load and unload a vehicle, and improve driver safety. Volvo said the gains are lower costs for haulage firms and a better working environment for drivers. “For a haulage firm, it is important to have high productivity, which is all about transporting freight from point A to point B in the safest and most efficient way possible,” said Christer Pehrson, business manager, long haul at Volvo Trucks. One area of the transport sector where efficiency can be improved is loading. To check the weight of the cargo is properly distributed, the driver currently has to climb up into the cab several times during the loading process to check the load indicator in the instrument panel. trathaven-based Asset Alliance Ltd (AAL) has secured a £1million plus deal involving one of Scotland’s leading haulage firms, Currie European Transport, and German trailer manufacturer Krone. The contract will see Asset Alliance supplying 50 new Krone 4 m tri-axle curtainsiders built specially to suit Currie European’s operation and meet with European Code XL regulations. The deal was put together by John McLaughlin, head of leasing for AAL, after detailed negotiations with Currie European MD, Stephen Turner. Commenting on the deal,

McLaughlin said: “We had originally considered investing in a supply of refurbished trailers for Currie European, but after talking with Stephen Turner it was clear there were concerns about future Code XL implications. “So AAL looked at how we could meet the company’s requirements and provide simplistic flexibility to their operation with the replacements. “We then discussed various supply options, with Currie European finally opting for the Krone product. AAL then arranged a consultative meeting with the company, ourselves and Krone to conclude the order, which has turned out to

have been a well-engineered piece of business for all concerned. As a bonus, Currie European also benefits from strong trade-in values supported by AAL and Krone, which helped to seal the deal.” Under the terms of the contract, the first trailer was delivered in midDecember 2012. The latest conversions are available as a purpose-designed cage for the existing Movano Tipper core conversion, or a custombuilt VFS caged tipper based on a Movano chassis cab. A utility cab conversion based on the Movano double cab is also available to provide even greater versatility. The cage is 2 m high with a galvanised mesh and rear doors that open to 270 degrees. The vehicle includes a full-height sliding door and a rear header bar with marker lamps for optimum visibility. The assembly is painted in dark grey to match the original tipper body structure, while all handles, latches and door retainers are highlighted in ‘traffic’ yellow. The tail-lift features a folding aluminium platform and the external controls are mounted within a dustproof and waterproof enclosure, while an instrument panel and operation instruction signage are all included. The cage is available on Vauxhall core conversion tippers, or alternatively a custombuilt VFS caged tipper is available on Movano chassis or crew cabs. “The Movano Caged Tipper is the ideal vehicle for a wide range of trades and public

The new version brings the latest truck-specific, turn-by-turn guidance and routing technology to a driver’s iPhone, iPad or Android device. “CoPilot Truck provides a powerful, yet affordable sat nav that professional drivers can trust, running on their choice of smartphone or tablet,” said David Quin, head of consumer applications at ALK Technologies. “Our latest version is the ideal in-cab companion to help professional drivers reduce their fuel costs, prevent wasted mileage and avoid trouble caused by taking inappropriate routes.” Unlike standard in-car navigation apps, CoPilot Truck provides routes based on the size of vehicle being driven and the load being delivered. It automatically takes into account height and weight restrictions, such as low bridges and tunnels, as well as HGV-restricted and prohibited roads. CoPilot’s maps are stored onboard the phone or tablet, not downloaded each trip, providing turn-by-turn guidance throughout Europe without large mobile data roaming charges. Drivers can choose to download the whole of Europe to their device or add and remove countries needed for specific trips. EUROLINERS GO THE DISTANCE

I

nternational haulage operator Denby Transport said it is so confident in the engineering quality of Euroliners from Schmitz Cargobull that it is planning a lifespan of 15 years for its four new fleet additions. The Lincoln-based company – which will predominantly use the Euroliners to carry general haulage into France and Belgium – said it favours running its trailers for as long as possible, with the right periodic maintenance and refurbishment programme, as it believes this to be more cost-effective. “Much like an aircraft, which can remain in service after more than 25 years, there is no reason why a sound, well-engineered trailer shouldn’t last a whole lifetime on a fleet,” said Peter Denby, managing director of Denby Transport. “It comes down to whether they are mechanically fit; curtains and floors can be replaced when necessary, but a robust chassis is the key to longevity. “I have every reason to believe that the Schmitz trailers will stand the test of time based on the solid spec and good value for money we gain from our existing equipment.” The fabric sliding roof of Schmitz Cargobull Euroliners makes them good

As well as maximised internal load height, the Euroliner’s lightweight design also offers a competitive payload capacity with space for 34 Euro pallets. As well as the standard four loading points, the new Euroliners have been specified with additional safety-conscious modifications including Schmitz Cargobull’s ROTOS running gear – with innovative braking technology and a roll stability program designed to help prevent vehicle roll-overs – and added braking sensors. “Not many other operators can say they are 100 per cent international. Because of our geographical reach, we need to run robust European spec trailers which are backed up by immediate spare parts availability wherever needed. This is where Schmitz excels,” added Denby. The four new trailers join an existing fleet of 125 specialist trailers and 50 Euro 5 tractor units.

loucester-based Ermin Plant Hire has added a new Mercedes-Benz Axor 6x2 to its fleet, mounted with an Andover Trailers plant body with doublecranked beavertail and fuel-saving foldforward ramps. The striking ‘golden yellow’ rear-steer rigid with front and rear air suspension replaces a 1996 M-registration truck, which also featured an Andover Trailers plant body, and will operate across the company’s six depots. It joins a 28-strong commercial vehicle fleet used to guarantee the fast and efficient delivery of more than 3000 items of plant and tools to customers across an area spanning Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, Somerset, Warwickshire, Wiltshire, Worcestershire and South Wales. The Axor is being used to deliver the largest items of plant, which range from eight-tonne excavators to telehandlers, forklifts, boom lifts, cherry pickers and dump trucks. Neil Jones, operations director of Ermin Plant Hire, said: “Our delivery fleet operates across six busy depots, meaning maximum reliability and uptime is critical. We treat our trucks the same as we do our plant, picking suppliers very carefully.

“Our previous Andover Trailers plant bodies have performed well and lived up to the demands of making multiple deliveries each day. The design team built the body to our precise specifications, so it’s a perfect match for our requirements.” The 9.3 m body features a hardwood floor with 1 m wide x 2.5 m long hydraulic fold-forward ramps, which can be lowered flat onto the deck to minimise aerodynamic drag on the road. Hydraulic steady legs ensure a stable platform when loading and unloading plant, while a remote and radio-control Ramsey BH550 hydraulic winch is mounted on the front bulkhead to assist with loading.

Bruno Blin has just been appointed senior vice president for Renault Trucks commercial and senior vice president of the Volvo Group’s truck sales area in South West Europe. He will take up his functions on January 1, 2013. The appointment follows the departure of Renault Trucks president Heinz-Jürgen Löw in November. Peter Karlsten, executive vice president Volvo Group Trucks and head of the trucks distribution in Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “The current restructuring within Renault Trucks needs to be seen in a wider context, where the whole Volvo Group is being restructured, including all its truck brands, so each brand can develop to its full potential. “In June, Renault Trucks’ entire renewed product range will be launched, which will strengthen its market position. 44-tonne DAF XF105 tag-axle tractor is the choice of sports surface specialist J Mallinson (Ormskirk) Ltd to move its plant and equipment to race tracks and sports stadia around the country. Managing director John Mallinson took advice from driver Michelle Cubbin when it came to choosing the right truck for the job. Site access is sometimes an issue, and the added manoeuvrability provided by the lifting rear axle was a factor in the decision. And with Michelle spending nights away on more distant jobs, the comfort of the Space cab on the big DAF was also a key consideration. “On top of that, it looks smart and does the job extremely well,” she said. “I like the fact that I have

510 horsepower at my fingertips, as this helps me overcome wind resistance when carrying large pieces of plant – which are not very aerodynamic – and to maintain good average speeds on longer trips.” Recently the truck was used to carry equipment for a major pitch reconstruction contract at Twickenham rugby stadium, and Michelle was able to make full use of the large Space cab. “I found the bunk extremely comfortable,” she said. “And the fold-away gear lever is a real boon, as it allows you to move out of the driving seat and across the cab quite easily.” The Euro 5-compliant DAF means Mallinson can take it anywhere within the M25, as it complies with the requirements of London’s Low Emissions Zone.

“We work at several sites inside the LEZ, including QPR and Watford football grounds, and with this truck we don’t have to worry about meeting the emission standards,” John Mallinson said. The DAF runs at up to 44 tonnes with a King tri-axle step-frame plant trailer. With 510 bhp (375 kW) from its 12.9-litre MX engine, the truck has a power-to-weight ratio of 11.6 bhp per tonne. A 16-speed manual gearbox is also fitted. DAF dealer North West Trucks of Huyton, Liverpool supplied the DAF and will carry out routine servicing and any warranty work under the three-year full manufacturer’s warranty.

FTA is go For gAs

T

he Freight Transport Association (FTA) has called upon the government to provide the necessary assurance to freight operators to embrace gas as a viable alternative to conventional diesel in its new Gas Manifesto. FTA said there is a wide range of decarbonisation measures to make moving goods by road more carbon efficient. However, to reduce reliance on conventional fossil fuels such as diesel, the UK must look to alternative fuels that offer further carbon savings – including natural gas and, ultimately, biomethane. FTA’s Gas Manifesto provides a vision for how this could be brought to fruition. Natural gas can be used as a road fuel either as a liquefied natural gas (LNG) or a compressed natural gas (CNG), producing less harmful emissions than conventional fuel. However, when biomethane produced from waste is used, carbon savings in excess of 60 per cent can be made when compared to an equivalent diesel vehicle. The manifesto supports the

development of a national refuelling infrastructure on the main motorway networks. For smaller operators, public refuelling stations would give confidence to invest in gaspowered HGVs as part of planned vehicle replacement cycles, as well as benefit larger companies. The Treasury also urgently needs to confirm at least a seven-year rolling guarantee for road fuel gas duty rates to provide certainty to support vehicle and infrastructure investment. Rachael Dillon, FTA climate change policy manager, said: “Gas is a credible option for industry to make serious reductions in carbon emissions while serving the needs of the economy in delivering goods and services. However, to significantly increase gas-powered HGVs on UK roads, government needs to support the development of a national refuelling infrastructure on main motorway routes to enable long-

distance trunking for vehicle fleets. Government needs to give greater consideration to the requirements of the operator, and ultimate purchaser, of low carbon vehicles to shape policy that benefits, rather than hinders investment.” John Lewis Partnership is a member of FTA’s Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme (LCRS), and said it believes biomethane represents a low-carbon alternative to diesel. Justin Laney, general manager - central transport, John Lewis Partnership, commented: “John Lewis Partnership has a very ambitious target to reduce carbon emissions from its truck fleet. We believe the best fuel to achieve that is biomethane gas. Biomethane is not only excellent for reducing emissions, it is also good for investment, jobs, and balance of payments. If the fuel duty differential between gas and diesel was fixed for a longer period, and Green Gas Certificates were allowed in transport carbon reporting, then two of the main barriers to adoption would be removed.”

Actros builds on firm foundAtions

cottish building and civil engineering contractor Dunne Group has chosen a New Actros from MercedesBenz to spearhead an expansion into the South of England. The company bought its New Actros 2545 tractor unit to service a newly opened depot in London, and it is now trunking daily from the Central Belt of Scotland. Dunne Group is based in Bathgate and has depots in Manchester and Leeds, as well as its new London site. The company operates divisions specialising in building, civil engineering, concrete flooring, pre-cast concrete and plant hire. Supplied by Edinburgh dealer Western Commercial, the vehicle has an aerodynamic StreamSpace cab and is powered by a 450 bhp straight-six engine, driving through the latest Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmission. Dunne Group runs a fleet of 35 trucks in which 8x4 tippers feature heavily, and bought the New Actros and a pair of new Montracon 45 ft flatbed trailers solely to supply its London outpost. Operations director John McCormack said: “We’ve won several large contracts in and around London recently, and

decided to open a depot from which to service them. “We already run some Actros so we know they are efficient and reliable, while the new model is also a strikingly good-looking vehicle. It’s making an average of 10 trips up and down the M6 and M1 each week, which means it’s highly visible and is certainly fulfilling our requirement for a smart flagship truck to raise the profile of our business. “The New Actros has hit the ground running with some very promising early fuel returns,” McCormack continued. “We won’t take any precise readings until it’s had time to bed in, but the indications are certainly positive. “Meanwhile, the cab is extremely well-appointed and comfortable, and the PowerShift 3 gearbox and superb new chassis make it a pleasure to drive.” Dunne Group is also signing up to a Mercedes-Benz Repair and Maintenance Contract, under which Western Commercial will maintain the new truck and an Actros concrete pumping vehicle. “We’re very happy with the service we receive from Western,” McCormack concluded. “They’re efficient, professional and always there when we need them.”

Tips on succeeding as a Truck driver in canada

F

o r almost a decade, scores of European truck drivers have been coming to Canada to ply their trade. Many of them have succeeded in creating a new life for themselves and their families and some have not. The purpose of this article is to offer some advice, based on the experiences of corporate immigration and recruiting specialist VRV Global, for truck drivers who are thinking about crossing the pond to drive in Canada. VRV Global has been assisting a Canadian transport company, H&R Transport, in recruiting European truck drivers since 2005. Together with our colleagues at H&R Transport, we constantly analyze the experience that the European drivers have in their adjustment to life in Canada and we revise our hiring and settlement processes to ensure the greatest likelihood of success. We respect the fact that the drivers who apply for this job and this life are making a huge personal, life-changing decision and our goal is to help each individual, and their family, make the right choice. Here’s what we’ve learned: 1. Moving to Canada is a family decision and the entire family should be involved in the process. Make

sure that this is discussed with spouses, exes, children, parents and siblings. Will they accompany you or come along later? Will parents and siblings visit you in Canada? In our experience, most of the people who return to Europe, do so for family reasons. 2. How will your past affect your ability to work as a truck driver and live in Canada? Canadian employers will usually only hire drivers who have clean driver abstracts. Also, Canadian immigration rules prohibit the admission of people who have criminal records or serious medical problems. This applies to

family members as well. Medical problems and criminal records are intensely private and you may not want to share this information with an employer. However, immigration officials will find out and it is better to disclose issues to immigration officials to see if they can be overcome. Many Canadian transport companies require their drivers to cross the Canada - US border frequently. Compliance with immigration legislation in both Canada and the US is critical. Also, some Canadian provinces allow long-haul drivers to apply for permanent residence. To be eligible, applicants must take a language

3. Be prepared for life in Canada. Moving to Canada can be a costly venture. While it is true that Canadian employers of workers in low skilled jobs are required to provide new hires with a return ticket to Canada, and new drivers will have a permit to work in Canada, it may take some time before money starts to come in. It may take several weeks to obtain a drivers license and it may take some time before the first pay package arrives in your bank account. We recommend drivers have at least $5000 (£3000) to bring to Canada. People with families may want to bring even more money with them. There is also not much point in bringing appliances and furniture to Canada. It is expensive to bring personal goods to Canada, so be very selective in what you bring. 4. What is the long term plan?

Most drivers come to Canada with a work permit valid for two years. These work permits can be extended, but only to a maximum of four years. In some provinces, spouses can also obtain open work permits. After four years, most temporary foreign workers are required to return to their country of origin for four years before being eligible to return to Canada. Four years may be long enough for some drivers. Others may want to settle down in Canada. Fortunately, there are provincial immigration programs that allow for this but it is important to learn about the programs and apply for PR long before the four year deadline as it can take as long as two years to complete the process. The Canadian transport industry employes 260,000 drivers. Our economy is growing and our population is aging. This means that there is growing requirement for European drivers. The chance to come to Canada to work is a fantastic opportunity for the right person.

Towergate Insurance has been providing insurance cover for owner-drivers up to the largest fleets for over 30 years. Q A few weeks ago, we sacked Q) a driver on the spot for stealing. We were shocked and surprised when a few weeks later we were called to an Employment Tribunal as a result of the driver claiming unfair dismissal. Things went from bad to worse when we rang our legal protection insurance company about making a claim only to be told that they wouldn’t deal with the claim as we hadn’t sought advice before dismissing the employee. Is it normal for legal expenses insurers to require customers to take advice from their helpline before dismissing a member of staff? A Most legal protection policies A) require policyholders to take advice before taking action against an employee. This is because employment law is such a legal minefield that unless a firm has in-house expertise, knowing exactly what to do in a particular set of circumstances can be very difficult. So taking advice before taking action against an employee is essential if the benefits of having legal protection cover are to be realised. Q I’m an owner-driver with Q) just the one truck. My whole livelihood depends on that one truck being on the road. That means it’s essential that if my truck’s damaged, I get it back on the road as soon as possible. So when my truck was damaged a few weeks ago, it was deeply frustrating that it took several weeks to get it back on the road. When I talked to my broker about this, he just said that’s fairly normal and there’s little we can do about it. What do you suggest we do? A A)

Our advice is to find a broker that’s willing and able to provide

you with the service that you need. That means a broker that can place your cover with an insurer that will guarantee that if a truck hasn’t been inspected within, say, two working days, repair work can go ahead providing the garage takes photographs of the damage and retains the damaged parts for inspection.

Q I’m an owner-driver. I’m also Q) an RHA member and use the RHA Conditions of Carriage. One of my customers says the £1,300 per tonne limit under RHA Condition is insufficient and wants me to up this figure to £5,000. I always thought the RHA Conditions are set in stone and cannot be altered in any way. Is that correct? A The only thing that that A) can be altered under the RHA Condition is in fact the per tonne limit of liability. This can be increased, or it can be replaced with an overall load limit. Assuming you go ahead with what your customer has requested, make sure you talk to your broker first and get your transit insurance cover suitably amended. Q Q)

A lot of my work involves making ‘just-in-time’ deliveries for a manufacturer. I recently had a scare when the delivery I was making to that customer was severely delayed due to the motorway I was travelling on being closed due to an accident. I was fortunate on this occasion that my arriving late didn’t hold up the production line; had it done so, the production manager told me that I would have been help responsible. How do I best protect myself against this risk?

RHA Conditions state that unless a ‘special interest’ in delivery has been notified and terms agreed, a member’s liability in the event of consequential loss shall not exceed the carriage charges, regardless of the circumstances giving rise to such a loss. Q A majority of our work Q) involves moving customers’ trailers containing their goods. We own the tractor units, our customer owns the trailers. Who’s responsible for insuring the trailers? A A)

Liability for loss or damage to trailers under arrangements such as you describe requires careful investigation. Make sure you agree with your customer the point at which liability for trailers attaches, the point at which liability ceases, and your maximum liability for their trailers. Then ask your broker to arrange appropriate cover.

A Public Liability cover is A) designed to protect your business against legal liability for damages in respect of injury, loss of, or damage to, property, and nuisance or trespass arising from business activities. To avoid an overlap between third-party motor cover and public liability insurance, the former typically restricts cover to the use of motor vehicles and the latter typically excludes legal liability arising from motor vehicles other than plant such as forklift trucks used on own premises in areas where the Road Traffic Act does not apply. Exclusions should be looked at closely to make sure there is no exclusion of essential cover. Particular consideration needs to be given to whether extensions are required for cover that is likely to be excluded from standard public liability policies such as contractual liability and financial loss. Cover will be provided up to an agreed indemnity limit. What constitutes an adequate indemnity limit depends on the nature of your business. The

The issue is made more complex by the fact that the limit of indemnity needs to be sufficient to cater for a claim that may not be settled until many years after the event that gave rise to the claim.
