Truckers launch EcoTax protest
H
auliers in France have mounted a protest against the government’s controversial plans to implement its new EcoTax on HGVs by blocking the country’s motorways with thousands of trucks. The protest, which caused hours of delays on Saturday, November 16, was organised by the French road transport federation OTRE in opposition to the green tax, which was poised to launch on January 1, 2014 and would have required both French and foreign operators of vehicles over 3.5 tonnes to pay a charge to use the country’s 15,000 km of taxable roadways. Participants were instructed to leave one lane free for cars, but to prevent foreign trucks from using the motorways during the demonstrations. In a statement to French press
agency AFP, OTRE leader Aline Mesples said: ”We do not want our competitors to carry on driving while we have stopped.” According to police estimates, 2000 trucks took part in the protest which spread to a number of French cities including Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Marseille, Lille and Lyon. However, the OTRE’s own figures reported the number of participating HGVs was closer to 4000. The peaceful demonstration followed incidents of rebellion against the EcoTax in October, which began in Brittany and led the government to suspend the introduction of the levy until an as yet unspecified date. However, protesters are continuing to press for the tax to be scrapped altogether.

G
reat Haywood-based bulk haulage specialist Ed Weetman (Haulage & Storage) Ltd has taken delivery of its first ever Iveco heavy truck in the shape of a Stralis Hi-Way 6x2 twin-steer tractor unit. Supplied by Stoke-on-Trent-based Sherwood Truck & Van, the 10.3-litre, 460 bhp Stralis marks an addition to the firm’s fleet of over 30 and has been put straight into operation distributing road salt supplies for the winter to locations in Staffordshire, Norfolk and Northamptonshire. “We’ve never operated an Iveco before, but what tipped the balance was seeing the Stralis Hi-Way first-hand and meeting the manufacturer,” said company MD, Richard Harvey. “Any preconceptions I had about Iveco were quickly put to rest. “As a business, we’ve focused on pretty much managing out empty-running and all of
P
our artics operate at 44 tonnes, nearly all the time,” he added. “This makes us a fuel-thirsty operation, but if the Stralis Hi-Way can deliver even a small improvement on fuel, then the real term benefit to our business will be significant.” In operation five days per week, the Stralis Hi-Way has been fitted with a ‘wet kit’ and is finished in the customer’s distinctive red, white and blue livery. As well as distributing road salt, it will be used to transport large volumes of agricultural feed, combinable crops and quarry products nationwide Harvey said the driver of the Hi-Way is also impressed. “The driver loves the spacious cab and is very pleased with his new vehicle. The Stralis is also getting a lot of attention from other drivers in the company. It’s not what they expected an Iveco would be like at all; they’ve been pleasantly surprised!”
If you’re paying for Driver CPC Training, why not get your money’s worth. Through a mixture of classroom and in-cab training, we aim to provide an enjoyable learning experience that brings every driver to a level far beyond the minimum demanded by the new legislation. And we can train you locally with classroom courses from only £90 and Fuel Efficiency & Eco in-cab training from only £140. According to a police spokesman, officers will be using the elevated viewpoint from the cab to watch for drivers using phones, crossing white lines and not wearing seatbelts, among other offences during the exercise, which has been dubbed Operation Natterjack. “Drivers do no expect officers to be in
an HGV, therefore it gives us a more honest and realistic outlook on how motorists are behaving,” a Police spokesman said. The move follows a similar operation by Hampshire police in September, in which local officers recorded 227 offences by truck drivers and motorists who were caught brushing their teeth, filling out paperwork and texting on their mobile phones while at the wheel on the M27, M3, M4, M40 and A34 (Truckstop News, December).

SCANIA TAKES EURO 6 POWER CROWN
S
cania has released a new version of its range-topping 730 bhp V8 engine which has been updated to comply with the imminent introduction of Euro 6 emissions regulations. The Swedish truck manufacturer launched lower-power 520 and 580 bhp versions of its new Euro 6 V8 earlier this year, but representatives from the company stated the launch of its top-power variant now completes its updated engine offering which now totals 11 diesel engines, two biodiesel engines and two gas variants. “Sheer power never goes out of style,” said Christopher Podgorski, Scania senior vice president, trucks. “Our customers buy V8s for
many different reasons, but an understandable need for performance is always one of them. “The fact that our customers buy Scania V8s over and over again proves they are durable and offer unsurpassed productivity as well,” he added. All three Scania V8s are based on the 16.4-litre platform originally introduced with the 730 bhp engine in 2010. Scania’s Euro 6 V8 engines use a water-cooled EGR system combined with SCR technology and a variablegeometry turbo to achieve the required emission levels. The silencer unit is only slightly bigger than the unit used for Scania’s inline-six engines, which frees up chassis space for fuel and AdBlue tanks.

wo men from Scotland have been charged with attempting to import cocaine after six kilos of the drug was found in a truck. The HGV, which had previously come into the UK from Dover, was stopped in an operation involving officers from the National Crime Agency and South Yorkshire Police on the A1 near Doncaster on Friday, November 8. Two men from Lanarkshire in Scotland were arrested and the truck was taken to Liverpool, where specialist Border Force officers conducted a search and discovered the cocaine. If cut and sold, the haul would have had an estimated street value of around £600,000. A further search of commercial premises in the Shotts area of Lanarkshire by officers from
the NCA and Police Scotland uncovered around 100 cannabis plants. The men were later charged with attempting to import drugs and appeared before Doncaster Magistrates on November 11, where they were remanded in custody to appear before Sheffield Crown Court later in the month. A third man, a 51-year-old from Liverpool, was also arrested in connection with the investigation, but was bailed pending further enquiries. Steve Baldwin, regional head of Investigations for the NCA, said: “Working with South Yorkshire Police, Police Scotland and Border Force, we have prevented a substantial quantity of illegal drugs from making it onto the streets. Our investigations continue.”

The new Mercedes-Benz Actros premium long-haul tractor unit range was the star attraction for some of the North-West’s leading road transport operators, at a launch event staged by leading dealer Enza.

The manufacturer said its top-power V8 has a wider torque curve which gives a maximum torque of 3500 Nm from 1000-1400 rpm, compared to 2700 Nm between 1000-1300 rpm offered by the 520 bhp V8, and 2950 Nm at 1000-1350 rpm from the 580 bhp variant. Scania’s V8 engines are only available to order with R-series cabs and is mated to the company’s Opticruise automated transmission as standard. However, a variety of gearboxes are offered as options. Alongside the launch of its updated 730 bhp V8, Scania has also unveiled a new 13-litre, six-cylinder Euro 6 variant rated at 370 bhp. The engine offers a high torque delivering 1900 Nm from 1000 rpm, which is a good fit for lighterweight, start/stop application. “Our customers are in the unique position of having a broad range of proven Euro 6 engines to choose from,” said Joel Granath, vice president for product management at Scania Trucks. “We were the first OEM to actually deliver Euro 6 engines more than two years ago. They met all expectations, and we have been able to develop and introduce a full Euro 6 range well ahead of the legislation deadline – and well ahead of most competitors.”
Held at the Oulton Park race circuit in Cheshire, the event gave invited guests their first chance to put the vehicle through its paces on UK roads. New Actros is the ultimate premium truck for longdistance transport. From the outset, designers and engineers were determined to provide the best possible comfort, driving dynamics, safety, productivity and operating economy, as well as a sweeping range of cab sizes, engine ratings and options, allowing customers to tailor vehicles perfectly for any application. The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The 81 guests took turns to head out on a 17-mile test drive, carefully chosen to simulate a variety of typical driving conditions. The route included single- and dualMark May reckons the new Mercedes-Benz Actros is ʻbrilliantʼ. carriageway roads. Each of the four demonstrator trucks provided for the event made 10 journeys - a total of almost 700 miles covered on the day. On each trip, the mpg figure achieved was recorded and at the end of the day the winner was Craig Stewart, logistics manager at Widnes-based Ray Stewart Haulage, who averaged an impressive 11.4 mpg in the 510 bhp V8-powered Actros 2551, and 11.8 mpg in the 450 bhp Actros 2545 model. Between journeys, guests also enjoyed ‘hot laps’ of the Oulton Park circuit in two-seater racing cars piloted by professional drivers. PERSONAL INJURY SPECIALISTS Transport manager Mark May of food waste and animal by-products recycling specialist John Pointon & Sons, summed up the feelings of many when he said: “It was a great day, very informative and enjoyable, and superbly organised. The new Actros is brilliant. The driving experience was fantastic and if the fuel performance figures are to be believed it will be an unbeatable all-round package. The previous Actros is a very good truck - but this new one is a huge step forward.”

TASKFORCE TARGETS CHEATING HAULIERS

ruck operators who are fiddling their books in the South and South East are being targeted as part of a new HM Revenue and Customs taskforce which is clamping down on tax cheats. The HMRC said the taskforce will be specifically targeting individuals and businesses in South Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Wiltshire who are undeclaring income and selling/using illegal fuel. The taskforce is a specialist team that undertakes intensive bursts of activity in specific high-risk trade sectors and locations in the UK. The team will visit traders to examine their records and carry out other investigations, and according to government estimates, the operation is set to bring in £3.75 million. “We are determined to support hardworking people who want to get on, but the people being targeted by these taskforces have no intention of playing by the rules,” said exchequer secretary to the treasury, David Gauke. “This government has made it clear we will not tolerate tax evasion and has provided HMRC with the resources to crack down on those who break the rules.” HMRC has collected more than £100 million as a result of taskforces launched since

HMRC taskforce is cracking down on operators using illegal fuel 2011-12, and said it expects to bring in over £90 million a year from taskforces launched over the next three years. HMRC’s Jennie Granger, director general of Enforcement and Compliance, said: “Not declaring income and selling/using illegal fuel is serious. It is really important that we level the playing field by stopping tax cheats. “Our message is: do the right thing,” she added. “If you haven’t already, come clean now. If you don’t, we will find you, investigate you and, not only could you face a heavy fine, but you may face a criminal prosecution as well.”

at nav and telematics specialist TomTom has launched new road toll reporting functionality for its WEBFLEET fleet management tool to provide hauliers with more precise costings for European routes. The manufacturer said WEBFLEET truck toll reporting provides a real-time breakdown of the toll costs incurred for each trip, allowing operators to better manage expenses and provide customers with transparent invoices. The functionality accounts for all applicable national tolls in France, Germany, Austria and Slovakia – and will also cover the proposed French EcoTax, reporting on the CO2 emissions for each trip and estimating the total costs incurred. “Cost management is crucial for transport companies who are operating on tight profit margins,” said Thomas Schmidt, MD, TomTom Business Solutions.“TomTom’s latest feature provides actionable data that enables
WEBFLEET tool now takes road toll costs into account businesses to demonstrate precisely where and when toll charges have been incurred – which is particularly vital if these costs are to be passed on to the customer.” Truck toll reporting is available now as a paid add-on to TomTom’s standard WEBFLEET platform.

ruck drivers in Staffordshire have launched a fresh appeal to car drivers to give them a wide berth in a bid to increase road safety. Launched during November’s National Road Safety Week, which highlighted the dangers surrounding driver distraction as a major cause of death and serious injury on the country’s road network, Staffordshire truck drivers appealed to car drivers to give them plenty of room or risk serious injury particularly with the arrival of wintry weather. In a poll conducted by Midlands haulage recruitment specialist Employ Recruitment UK, which supplies over 150 drivers, 55 per cent said their biggest safety problem on the roads were motorists who didn’t give their trailers Car drivers have been asked to give trucks more room on the road

enough room at junctions or roundabouts. Employ Recruitment UK supplies drivers for some of the biggest national firms, including Sainsbury’s, Marstons Breweries and DHL. Managing director Sadie Alcock said: “Statistics show truck drivers are generally much more careful on the roads than motorists, but in 2010 over 7000 accidents involved an HGV, with 9686 casualties – of which 263 were fatalities. “We ensure our drivers undergo rigorous safety checks, that their licences are checked every three months and that they undertake training in key areas including risk awareness, bad weather driving, vehicle safety and the effects of tiredness and fatigue. The same cannot be said for motorists.”

PHONING IT IN
I wrote some months ago that the Scottish traffic commissioner Joan Aitken had signed a ‘Memo of understanding’ with some Scottish police forces that she would be notified whenever a Penalty Notice had been issued to a professional driver – namely LGV and PCV licence-holders. I protested this was placing drivers in a ‘double jeapordy’ situation, effectively penalising them twice for the same offence. I saw no response, official or otherwise to this in the transport or mainstream press. Fast forward to the present day where the eight Scottish police forces have now amalgamated to form a single entity: Police Scotland. A colleague recently had the misfortune to find himself in front of ‘she who must be obeyed’ for a phone transgression and had his LGV licence suspended for a fortnight. Two weeks’ wages for using the phone? Makes a bluetooth headset seem very cheap by comparison.

We Can Do It!
Author: Roy Larkin Publisher: Roy Larkin Web: www.historicroadways.co.uk ISBN: 978-0-9565014-3-1 Price: £12.95 (plus £3 p&p) Edward Box & Co Ltd (previously known as Marston Road Services Ltd) played an important role in the history of heavy haulage. The company was one of the first to throw its support behind the development of internal combustion engines when steam engines were the powerplants of choice for the majority of other specialist hauliers. It was also the firm that commissioned Scammell to build its famous One Hundred Tonner. This 112-page book from Roy Larkin explores the careers of two of Edward Box’s most notable luminaries: Ernest Holmes and Fred Cooper, who rose to prominence in the field of British heavy haulage during the turbulent times of the 20th century. Alongside the fascinating life stories
Another driver in front of the beak at the same time for a second offence (he must be a slow learner) apparently got a bit lippy with her and finds himself kicking his heels for the next six months! I have been told, but have been unable to verify, that drivers caught on their phones in their private cars may still be liable to be punished. As I drive around Scotland, I daily see HGV drivers using mobile handsets on the move. Few even try to hide the fact any more, possibly unaware their actions could cause them an unexpected (presumably unpaid) holiday from their day job. The penalties may well be out of all proportion to the crime, but be aware guys and girls – the ball is firmly in your court. My employers have even made the use of bluetooth headsets a disciplinary issue, although I suspect this is a knee-jerk reaction.
of these two forward-looking men, the book presents a detailed picture of key points during their histories – which also coincide with turning points in the world of commercial vehicle engineering. First up was the arrival of the One Hundred Tonner, which is looked at in some detail. Next came Edward Box’s activities during World War II, where the company was kept busy moving machines for the armed forces. After the war, an order from the Ministry of Supply for 110 new locomotives meant Box’s specialist services were required to transport the 26-tonne engines from Newton-leWillows to Gladstone Dock, Liverpool. After Edward Box was nationalised in 1949, Ernest left to create a new business that dabbled in many different fields, including heavy engineering, specialist haulage and plant hire. Soon after, his friend Fred followed to take up the role of managing director of the fledgling heavy engineering division, Ernest Holmes (Langley) Ltd. It’s an interesting story that enthusiasts of heavy haulage will most certainly enjoy. Rating: «««««

As a post script, I don’t think being based elsewhere in the UK will cut much ice here; LGV licences are vocational and held at the discretion of the commissioners. They are in constant contact and a ticket picked up on a visit to Scotland may still result in a brown envelope dropping through your letterbox inviting you to discuss the matter! Be aware. David Russell Penicuik
You could accuse this twisty thriller of favouring style over substance, but while it’s certainly directed with much showmanlike pizazz, there’s a good story lurking beneath the glitz. A band of magicians are recruited to perform a string of increasingly outlandish heists which serve a dual purpose – one that the international police are clamouring to unravel.

ACTIVE INTERVENTION Let’s face it, most truck accidents are squarely down to the driver. It doesn’t make comfortable reading, especially when you realise this assertion is apparently backed by statistics. The fact seems irrefutable: when it comes to accidents, it’s not just a reckless few – we are all the weakest link. But it really shouldn’t be a surprise. Manufacturers like Volvo don’t spend millions of pounds in the research and development of safety systems for no reason. As far as the truck itself goes, safety systems add nothing to productivity. Driven within the boundaries of the laws of physics, a truck will always be safe on a road. A well-maintained vehicle can never be a danger; a road is a static lump of tarmac, and to describe one as ‘dangerous’ is nonsensical. There’s a common problem in all this: one we’ve known about all along, but have never wanted to recognise (unlike the people at Volvo). The bottom line is that where the human brain fails to react or act quickly enough, ECUs are

so much better – and faster. And where enforcement fails to control all drivers all of the time, active electronic systems will one day control all vehicles. More and more, active intervention is being used in vehicle safety, gradually removing the driver from the decision-making process. Volvo still says that some aspects of safety will always be left to the driver – seatbelt use, for example. But I think this fails to imagine the true result of total control: that passive systems, like seatbelts, become superfluous. And that sadly, so will the wonderful craft of lorry driving. HOUSE-BOUND HAULIERS’ MOVING CONFESSIONS
or many, moving house is one of the most stressful activities imaginable. But the next time you’re boxing things up ready to shift residence to another locale, spare a thought for the lot of the men and women who work in the removals business. From unwittingly abducting pets to dealing with overly ambitious movers who swear the furniture in a three-storey house will fit inside a new one-floor flat, they’ve seen it all. But according to a new report in the Telegraph, these are just some of the ‘confessions’ the paper received from removals operatives keen to share their more amusing anecdotes. “We were moving a client from France to the UK,” James Robertson of Anthony Ward Thomas Master Removers, told the newspaper. “The lorry returned from Calais and parked up at our Acton headquarters. I heard a bump from inside and assumed the ramp was loose and had fallen over. It was only when we opened the back that we were greeted by 10 smiling, yet illegal immigrants who had hitched a ride – so we called the police.” In another incident, a neighbour’s cat was accidentally brought along for the ride. “We emptied a house in London, filled two vans and sent the family off to their new home in Devon while we filled a third van,” Robertson said. “We found their cat asleep upstairs, so popped him in the van as well. We expected a tearful reunion between the family and cat when we got to Devon, only to discover that it wasn’t their cat!” But over-ambitious movers are also a common issue. “One lady wanted to move the contents of her Scottish farm to a top-floor
Workers at Anthony Ward Thomas Master Removers reported a number of amusing anecdotes flat in the Barbican, in the City of London,” remembered company founder, Anthony Ward Thomas. “Included in the haul was a Massey Ferguson 130 tractor!” According to Charlie Parry of removals firm Aussie Man & Van, incorrect addresses can also cause big problems. “Three of our removals guys were sent to a job on the King’s Road,” Parry told the Telegraph. “They turned up at the address and explained to the cleaner, who answered the door and spoke little English, that they were there to move its contents, and started loading the lorry. The client called me later that morning to ask where the removals men had got to; only then did I realise that the King’s Road they had gone to was the Chelsea one, not the correct address in Richmond. By the time the error was realised, they had cleared the entire first floor!” For more eyebrow-raising confessions, head to the Telegraph online at http://tinyurl.com/namjnr8

Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. For a second and/or subsequent offence to multiply accordingly, for example, second offence in a commercial vehicle 2 x 21 days.

I have mentioned before how it always surprises me that all of a sudden, I will receive a rush of queries about a particular topic. Often this will be a topic that I have not received any queries on for such a long time and, as they say, like buses, they all come at once. Well, this month’s bus relates to questions on working time and in the operation of tachographs when it comes to recording time under the different symbols. The first issue was to give an overview of the Working Time Directive as it affects drivers who are subject to EU tachograph rules. VOSA produces some excellent guidance on this, and I strongly recommend you look at its guides on drivers’ hours and tachographs. The main aspects of the Regulations are that weekly working time must not exceed
an average of 48 hours per week over the reference period. A maximum working time of 60 hours can be performed in any single week providing the average 48-hour limit is not exceeded. In relation to night work, if it is performed, working time must not exceed 10 hours in any 24-hour period. Night time is the period between 00.00 and 04.00 for goods vehicles and between 01.00 and 05.00 for passenger vehicles. The 10-hour limit may be exceeded if this is permitted under a collective or workforce agreement. Mobile workers must not work more than six consecutive hours without taking a break. If the working hours total between six and nine hours, working time should be interrupted by a break or breaks totalling at least 30 minutes. If the working hours total more than nine
One of the offences some drivers have committed is using a mobile phone while driving. The legislation defines this offence as follows: No person is to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using a handheld mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.
following: sending or receiving oral or written messages; sending or receiving facsimile documents; sending or receiving still or moving images; and providing access to the internet. If you’re caught using a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving, you can expect to get an automatic fixed penalty notice. This means you’ll get three penalty points on your driving licence and have to pay a fine of £60. However, your case may go to court. If it does, you may also face disqualification from driving on top of a maximum fine of £1000. If you were driving a PCV or heavy goods vehicle, you could face a maximum fine of £2500. Also if the matter were considered of a serious nature you could face prosecution for other road transport related offences, which carry more serious sentences.

Burke bags anniversary FH
P
aisley-based MP Burke Transport Ltd has taken delivery of a new Volvo FH 6x2 tractor unit to celebrate the company’s silver anniversary. The 500 bhp FH carries special 25-year lettering and joins a fleet of eight vehicles – the majority of which are Volvos. The firm took its first truck – a second-hand Volvo F88-290 – in 1988, and said the vehicle’s reliable performance paved the way for more Volvo models to follow. MP Burke was also quick to try Volvo’s FH range shortly after its launch in 1994, and has operated a number of versions with outputs ranging from 420 to 520 bhp since then. “Despite being a relatively small-sized fleet operator, I feel Volvo Trucks are very fair with us,” said company MD, Martin Burke. “We deal with salesmen Robert Auld and Alan
McGregor for sourcing new and used Volvos respectively, and the whole team at Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland in Cardonald, Glasgow have a good understanding of our business.” The firm’s latest FH-500 tractor unit comes with a Globetrotter cab, I-Shift automated gearbox and Alcoa Dura Bright ally wheels. As company flagship, in addition to its usual weekly work across the UK, the truck will also be used in local community gala days and company promotional material. The anniversary truck has been allocated to MP Burke driver Steve Thorpe, who will have the luxury of a fitted fridge and microwave oven within the well-appointed Globetrotter cab. Michelin tyres have also been fitted, and the truck’s detailed livery was applied by local company, Sneddon Signs.
Pet firm favours Forward
N
ottingham-based UK pet and aquatic wholesaler Pedigree Wholesale has upgraded its rigid distribution fleet with a brand-new Isuzu Forward N75.190 7.5-tonne curtainsider with Easyshift semiautomated transmission and rear, tuck-away tail lift. The truck is the first Isuzu to join the Pedigree fleet and is operating out of the company’s Northern depot in Leeds. It’s also the first of Pedigree’s distribution vehicles to carry the newly designed Pedigree Wholesale corporate livery. “Within our distribution operation, we have a specific requirement for 7.5-tonne vehicles for those regional deliveries that require a smaller footprint of vehicle without sacrificing either payload or economy,” said Pedigree Wholesale’s managing director, Steve Brown.
Scania bets on biodiesel
S
cania has launched two Euro 6 truck engines designed to run on 100 per cent biodiesel (EN 14214) as part of its latest round of powerplant upgrades. The engines are based on the company’s modular-built, five-cylinder, nine-litre variants rated at 320 or 360 bhp, which give 1600 Nm of torque at 1050 rpm or 1700 Nm at 1100 rpm respectively when running diesel. When running on 100 per cent biodiesel, output falls by up to eight per cent. Scania said running biodiesel is straightforward for both drivers and operators, as the engines can use either 100 per cent biodiesel or a mixture of biodiesel and regular diesel as required.
Burke’s new Volvo FH-500 was ordered to celebrate firm’s 25th year in business

The only stipulation is that the special biodiesel engine models must be serviced as if they were running on 100 biodiesel permanently. “We see increasing signs of interest in biodiesel in a number of larger markets,” said Joel Granath, vice president of Scania’s product management for trucks. “The sustainability aspects are always kept in the picture – for example, for hauliers who are mainly in distribution traffic in city centres. “As far as I know, no other manufacturer has presented Euro 6 engines for biodiesel, so we have great expectations of the reception of these very flexible and environmentally suited engines.”
Mar-Train takes five
orthern Ireland-based abnormal load specialist Mar-Train Heavy Haulage has added its first five-axle stepframe trailer with extending outer boxes and beavertail to its fleet, which will be used to transport heavy-duty Terex crushers and screeners around the UK and Europe. The SFCLEX 85 model built by Andover Trailers is worth more than £80,000 and is equipped with a low-profile neck and an extendible frame on the outer boxes which can extend by up to 2.5 m to accommodate the longer conveyors on the machines. This trailer is the 13th from Andover to join Mar-Train’s fleet of 23 tractor units and 70 trailers, but the unique five-axle design is the company’s first – and is designed to withstand the extensive weights of the machines it carries. “The five-axle trailer has been designed to a bespoke specification to allow us to transport Terex plant weighing 60 tonnes,” said Mar-Train MD, Tim Martin. “We have 12 other Andover heavy-haulage trailers that have all been built to carry specific equipment or work in certain industries, and it’s being able to design something exactly to our needs
that keeps us coming back to Andover. “The Andover team looked at the machine we would be carrying and then took the time to design a trailer that fulfils all possible requirements. It’s refreshing compared to a lot of trailer manufacturers, which simply offer a set number of different specifications and say, ‘is that any good to you?’” A key feature of the trailer is its ability to hold the load in only 30 per cent of the bed – in comparison to a normal plant trailer, which is designed to take the load in 60 per cent of the bed. The new trailer’s specification includes three fixed and two self-steering BPW axles, with manual and solenoid control to aid manoeuvrability and minimise tyre wear. BPW air suspension with raise/lower control is also fitted, which can be used to lower the trailer for loading and unloading. After presenting Andover with the details of the machines the trailer would be carrying, Mar-Train also told the company the equipment must be robust enough to work in quarries, but its main function would be delivering the Terex crushers and screeners to and from docks.
New 7.5-tonne Forward is the first Isuzu to join the Pedigree Wholesale fleet “After careful consideration, we felt the Isuzu 7.5-tonner ticked all the right boxes for us concerning emissions, fuel economy, payload, whole-life costs and reliability. We feel it will be an exciting and productive addition to our 27-strong vehicle fleet.” Pedigree said it anticipates the new truck will cover between 80,000 and 100,000 km per annum over a six-year working life. Currently the vehicle is delivering products to customers throughout North Wales, the North of England and right up to the Scottish Borders. The truck was supplied by local Isuzu dealer TIM Commercial Vehicle Services at Ilkeston. “Throughout the acquisition programme, we found Isuzu and its dealer were extremely easy to deal with and this really did smooth the integration of the debutant Isuzu into our fleet,” Brown said.

Ferry line expands service to Spain
L
D Lines has announced a new UK to Spain ferry service between Poole and Santander which the operator hopes will enable British hauliers to sidestep France’s new EcoTax, due to be enforced from January 1, 2014. The service commenced on Sunday, November 3 and provides two return sailings weekly between Poole and Santander, with a crossing time of 26 hours. Introducing the new Poole– Santander link will be the Norman Asturias with capacity for up to 110 freight vehicles.

On-board facilities include 120 cabins, bar, restaurant, shop and cinema. Christophe Santoni, CEO of LD Lines said: “This new project will be a key addition to our existing route between France and Spain and establish an Atlantic network by providing new travel and transport links for freight markets between Portugal, Spain, France and the UK. Significantly, the timing of the introduction reflects growing confidence and evidence of signs of recovery for many European economies.”

STANDARD TASK FOR CANTER
FOULGER’S FUEL TEST PUTS ACTROS ON TOP
T
he London Evening Standard has taken delivery of 33 new 7.5-tonne FUSO Canter trucks from Heathrow dealer Rygor to distribute the paper around the city. The Standard said it chose the Canter for its high payload and compact external dimensions, which make it particularly suited to multi-drop, urban operation. The Canters are all 7C15 models, powered by 150 bhp engines mated to DUONIC gearboxes – the first twin-plate, dual-clutch automated transmission to be fitted to a light truck. The trucks’ lightweight curtainside bodies are by TLC Auto Refinishing of Feltham, and feature an updated version of the familiar orange and white chevron livery worn for years by the paper’s Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans. Tim Freeman, head of distribution at the London Evening Standard, said: “Our Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans were exceptionally reliable, so Rygor was the obvious choice when we were looking to invest in larger vehicles. “The Canter’s turning circle and outstanding manoeuvrability are big plus points given we are working in central London. But payload is even more important, as we strive for
11
maximum efficiency to contain fuel costs and minimise our carbon footprint. “The Canter’s carrying capacity of almost four tonnes is roughly half a tonne more than that of a conventional 7.5-tonner,” Freeman added. “This equates to about 3000 extra copies per vehicle, which represents a major saving.” Based at the newspaper’s new distribution centre in Greenwich, the Canters are used to collect newspapers from the printing facility in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, then distribute them to retailers and newsstands. They will be maintained under a CharterWay contract hire agreement from Mercedes-Benz Financial Services, by South London agent SG Smith.
SCANIA REFINES DRIVER AIDS
S
cania has been busy adding additional features to its Euro 6 trucks in a bid to make them safer and more efficient. As of Q1 2014, a new Eco-roll facility will be included in vehicles purchased with Opticruise transmission and Scania’s updated Active Prediction system. Eco-roll will automatically assess the most efficient method of descending hills: either by rolling down in neutral with engine idling, or using engine braking with the fuel supply switched off. Scania said Eco-roll can save up to two per cent of fuel in hilly terrain. In addition, the Swedish manufacturer’s Driver Support system, which offers real-time tips and scoring based on how well a person is driving, has also received a range of updates. The system can now be fitted in a wider range of vehicles (including construction and distribution chassis), and can work with a wider range of gearboxes. New features include a modified crest assessment that evaluates whether the driver has released the throttle at the right point before the crest; drivers of construction trucks that climb in low gear up steep slopes under harsh conditions will be advised to ease up on
N
the gas when it’s not possible to upshift; and drivers of trucks with a three-pedal Opticruise or manual transmission will be given tips on how to use the clutch to avoid excessive wear. Rounding off the upgrades, Scania has announced it is also offering an Advanced Emergency Braking (AEB) system in its Euro 6 trucks which can help to deploy emergency braking if the driver is inattentive to dangerous situations. In addition, the manufacturer is also providing a smarter version of its Lane Departure Warning (LDW) technology, first introduced in 2006, which alerts drivers if a truck makes an unintentional sideward movement.
orfolk’s Foulger Transport has added seven New Actros 2545 tractors to its fleet of 100 trucks operating from its base in Snetterton after the completion of a fuel-efficiency trial between the new Merc and the firm’s established fleet favourite. Supplied by Peterborough Dealer Intercounty Truck & Van, the trucks have aerodynamic, flat-floored StreamSpace cabs, and are fitted with 450 bhp straightsix engines and PowerShift 3 automated transmissions. Foulger Transport has run MercedesBenz trucks before, but not for some time, said group transport manager, Paul Willis. “So although we’d heard good things about the fuel performance of the New Actros, it had to prove its worth to win a place in our fleet. “Intercounty had the belief in their product to provide us with a demonstrator, which we ran for a trial period to gain an accurate ‘real life’ impression of its performance – they were confident it would impress us, and so it did.” While three of Foulger Transport’s New

Actros are on general distribution duties, the other four are equipped with hydraulic gear and pull bulk tipping trailers. A significant proportion of the operator’s work is undertaken for the agricultural sector – it provides a range of services to local farmers including lifting, cleaning and hauling their crops, much of it sugar beet bound for the British Sugar factory at Bury St Edmunds. “We’d always expect new trucks to be slightly better than older ones on fuel,” Willis continued. “But the fact that some of our new Mercedes-Benz units are more than 3.0 mpg ahead of our current fleet tractors is certainly encouraging. “Like most in this industry, fuel efficiency is our biggest consideration in a new truck. But it’s not the only one. We also had to be satisfied the New Actros would offer the driver comfort and reliability we need, matched by a high level of back-up from the dealer.” All of Foulger Transport’s New Actros are equipped with FleetBoard telematics systems that monitor fuel consumption and driver performance.

Also of benefit to drivers are improved seats and driving position, optimised to provide a better view of the road. This is aided by an increase in the cabʼs usable window area and an innovative slimmer rear-view mirror design. Stalks and controls are arranged in priority so the most important ones are now closest to the driver, and the steering wheel now has a neck tilt function – another world-first in the truck world. Safety is high on the agenda, An all-new cab structure features more upright A-pillars, which give the cab an additional 1 m3 of interior space. This means an extra 300 litres (10.5 cu ft) of storage capacity, as well as greater comfort on board.“The cab is optimised both for work and leisure time,” Nilsson said. “A better bed, integrated parking cooler, new lighting and low noise levels among other features, all increase the chance of pleasant relaxation and a good nightʼs sleep, which in turn means drivers are less tired and more alert.” Production of the Volvo FH will start in spring 2013 for the European market.

THE GUIDE EVERY
Details were scarce when we went to press ahead of the official launch on September 5, but the Swedish manufacturer told Truckstop News the new FHs will be available in both Euro 5 and 6 form, and pack a vast amount of upgrades and improvements. Leading the charge for fuel efficiency is Volvoʼs new I-See function (Truckstop News, issue 301). The system, which works alongside the I-Shift automated transmission, is claimed to cut consumption by five per cent by storing information about the route the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure progress is as economical as possible,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Truck Corporation. An additional five per cent saving in fuel use is possible with Volvo Trucksʼ new Fuel Package. This package encompasses training and monthly assistance – Fuel Advice – and its aim is to cut fuel costs by changing driving styles and increasing knowledge of how to drive for maximum fuel-efficiency. Volvoʼs new I-Torque Euro 6 driveline – production of which for the European market will get under way in autumn 2013 – should make for additional fuel savings. “ITorque reduces fuel consumption by up to With its new Volvo FH series, Volvo is ʻpushing four the envelopeʼ in re-defining what a premium per cent. Together with I-See and other minor truck can offer. improvements, the result is fuel consumption can drop by up to 10 per cent. For the average truck, this can equate to a saving of up to 4100 litres of fuel a year,” Nilsson continued. On-road manners have received much attention, and Volvo is claiming the new trucks offer exceptional handling thatʼs much like a car. “To put things into perspective, we can even offer independent front suspension, although initially only on left-hand drive vehicles. This world-first takes handling to unsurpassed levels in the truck world,” Nilsson said.

ISSUE 318 JANUARY 2014
TRUCK REGISTRATIONS ON THE UP
R
egistrations of new commercial vehicles rose by almost a third in October, according to new figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). A steep rise in sales towards the end of 2013 has been hotly anticipated by the industry, as hauliers race to complete purchases of new Euro 6 vehicles or step up orders of Euro 5 trucks to avoid the impending change of emissions regulations at the end of December. A total of 5105 truck registrations were completed in October, marking a 32 per cent increase over last year’s figures. The SMMT said the spike has also helped to bring year-to-date truck sales into the black with 39,457 new vehicles hitting the road since January, representing a 3.2 per cent increase over 2012 levels. Van sales during the month were also
strong, with 22,473 registrations giving a 26.3 per cent rise over last year’s figures. Total van registrations since January is 227,477 – a rise of 11 per cent. With all new commercial vehicle registrations combined, the total of 266,934 sales resulted in a 9.8 per cent rise that the SMMT said “put the UK head and shoulders above other markets in Europe”. “Both the van and truck markets showed great strength in October, boosting the sector by 27.3 per cent and taking the 2013 growth rate to almost 10 per cent,” said SMMT chief executive, Mike Hawes. “We expected the Euro 5/6 change would see the truck market grow in strength towards year-end and for vans, SMMT has raised its forecast on the back of sustained demand and confidence to 264,100, a 10.2 per cent rise on last year.”
HEIGHT RULES PUT EU TRADE AT RISK
A
group of trade associations from the UK and Ireland have written to the European Parliament’s Transport Committee asking it not to damage highly efficient trade flows between the two countries by imposing unnecessary and unwelcome height restrictions on goods vehicles. The letter, alerting the Committee to the threat posed to trade by a report which was presented in November, received strong support from key members of the Transport Committee and from the European Commission. The letter was signed by the Freight Transport Association, FTA Ireland, Road Haulage Association, British Irish Chamber of Commerce, Irish Exporters Association, Irish Road Haulage Association and the Irish Business and Employers Confederation, and expressed extreme concern about a suggested amendment in a report by Austrian MEP Jörg Leichtfried, which would prohibit all crossborder movements of vehicles exceeding 4 m in height. Ireland has a national height limit of 4.65 m and the UK imposes no national height restriction.
“We are extremely concerned about the adverse effect this would have on trade and the environment,” said FTA chief executive, Theo de Pencier. “One major UK retailer, with operations in the UK and Ireland, has estimated that a 4 m height restriction would result in 3000 extra trailer movements, adding 740,000 additional road miles and generating an extra one million kilogrammes of CO2 per year.” It is common practice in most EU Member States to impose a national height requirement of 4 m, but both the UK and Ireland apply a derogation as permitted under EU law and have never imposed such a requirement on domestic operators. Using this flexibility, trade flows have developed with vehicles that exceed the 4 m limit – known as high cube trailers. It is estimated up to 90 per cent of the Irish fleet would be affected by such a height restriction – with serious cost increases. The letter appealed to the Transport Committee to accept the European Commission’s proposal to permit crossborder movements of vehicles that exceed the maximum dimensions if they are already permitted in neighbouring member states.
OBITUARY: A FOND FAREWELL

artin Phippard passed away on Monday, November 11 after a long struggle with Motor Neurone Disease. Readers of Truckstop News’ sister publication, Trucking magazine, will recognise his name from the many articles he has written and for the books and DVDs he and his long-time friend and business partner, Pete Connock, produced in the past. Martin spent his life working in the industry. He was involved with Volvo Trucks for 28 years, from Westward Trucks and Volvo South, right through to Volvo Truck & Bus Wales & West before his retirement in 2009. During this period he sold around 3000 trucks in the area. He was much loved and respected by his work colleagues, Volvo customers, friends – who recently organised a drive-by of over 80
More than 80 vehicles attended a driveby to celebrate Martin’s 70th birthday trucks to celebrate his 70th Birthday just weeks before his untimely death – and competitors in the transport business. Martin had a lifelong passion for the industry, and he visited over 50 countries filming trucks both at work and at shows. He was affectionately known by the UK press as ‘the defender of the flame’ because of his passion for his favourite truck brand – Volvo. He is survived by his wife Annie, his two daughters and his grandchildren and our thoughts are with them at this very difficult time. Martin will be sorely missed by all those who knew him.

Menzies World Cargo has been playing divisive games with its staff during pay negotiations. “Menzies is telling its cargo workforce to take a two-year pay freeze because their DHL colleagues doing the same job earn up to 22 per cent less. But Menzies is also trying to get away with giving the DHL workers a belowinflation pay deal. “Our members have called time on these divide-and-rule tactics. It is time for the company to sit down and sort out this mess over pay and avoid a strike.”

DON’T SLIP UP OVER WINTER TYRE REGS!
T
ruck tyre manufacturer Continental has produced an updated tyre regulations guide for truck operators travelling to mainland Europe this winter. Winter tyre regulations differ greatly between countries, and operators the do not comply with local legislation run the risk of incurring costly fines. To help ensure hauliers stay on the right side of the law, the guide includes information for the winter equipment requirements of each European country. While European markets have their own legislation regarding winter tyre fitments that are specific to the respective local country, Continental stressed there are some basic requirements all drivers should bear in mind. Tyres across all axle positions should have a minimum tread depth of at least 4 mm, and if winter tyres are not fitted all round, then priority should be given first to the drive axle, then the steer axle and then to all other remaining axle positions Continental said its SCANDINAVIA range
of tyres for trucks, trailers and semitrailers has been produced to ensure drivers are safe both in the UK and abroad, with specific options for the steering, driver and trailer axles. The company said its winter tyres significantly exceed the legal requirements that apply to the M+S (Mud and Snow) symbol in the UK, and go beyond the values of the 3PMSF (Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake) symbol – which is mandatory in the USA for car winter tyres, and whose introduction is currently under discussion in Europe for commercial vehicle tyres. “Regulations for coping with winter weather differ greatly across Europe,” said Tracey Hyem, commercial marketing manager, Continental. “Our recently updated range of winter tyres will ensure vehicles can operate legally within each country, and with up to 20 per cent more traction, safety and fuel consumption are improved too.” The European Winter Tyre Regulations 2014 guide is available from the Continental website at www.continental-tyres.co.uk
THREE WORDS FOR NEW POSTCODE SYSTEM
A
n alternative system to postcodes that uses three unique English dictionary words for any GPS location has attracted “huge interest” from UK logistics companies, according to system developer what3words. The company said hauliers suffer substantial losses on account of the inefficiencies associated with inaccurate addresses, and in rural areas in particular, postcodes only give a rough approximation of a customer’s delivery address. The firm’s new system carves up the Earth into 57 trillion 3 x
3 m squares, and gives each square a unique three-word descriptor – for example, table. spoon.lamp or cabbage.radiator.tips. This means relaying GPS coordinates would be as simple as the customer saying three words when making an order over the phone. “We expect to announce the first integrations of what3words over the next few months,” said company CEO, Chris Sheldrick. “We’re excited to see the impact of the technology on logistics companies’ efficiency.”
VOLVOS FOR SOUTH AFRICA
Volvo Trucks president, Claes Nilsson, said South Africa is an important market
V
olvo Trucks has continued its rollout of its new FH, FM and FMX trucks by launching the new models in South Africa. “We are glad to be able to offer our customers in South Africa the most modern and innovative Volvo line-up ever,” said Claes Nilsson, president of Volvo Trucks.
The Swedish manufacturer said South Africa currently ranks number four among its top FMX markets. “The FMX suits customers here, often working in mining and logistics operations and sometimes in very difficult road conditions. This creates a strong demand for truck uptime as well as for after sales support and service,” Nilsson said.
QUARRY BASH MARKS AROCS ARRIVAL
M
ercedes-Benz has used a quarry in Durham to launch its new Arocs off-road chassis to businesses in the North East. The event at Sherburn Quarry was hosted by North East dealership, Bell Truck and Van, and its customers who got the chance to test-drive the vehicle included Thompsons of Prudhoe, James Burrell, JT Dove, JBT Waste, Greenways, Esh Group, Dunhouse Quarry, Sherburn Stone Co, MGL Demolition and Northumbrian Roads. Stephen Atkinson, transport manager of Prudhoe-based highway surfacing and maintenance contractor Northumbrian Roads, was the first person in the North East to order the new truck. “I’ve chosen the Arocs as it does the job
I need it for,” Atkinson said. “I originally saw it in Germany and I was very impressed. It’s coming next month and it’ll be a great Christmas present for the company.”
ROUTING TOOL HITS THE WEB
O
nline haulage industry directory and services provider UK Haulier has launched a free online HGV route planner designed to help companies, traffic operators and drivers plan their journeys more efficiently. The company said the new system will enable its members to calculate their entire route, from collection address to delivery address, via UK road maps on its website. “Users can filter each route to match each of their individual vehicle’s height, width and weight measurements which will be taken into consideration when routing to avoid road restrictions,” said a company spokesperson. The system uses map data sourced from Navteq and location searches can be
UK Haulier’s online truck route planner is free to use performed by postcode, street or town name. The tool can also provide details of truck stops, lay-bys and fuel stations en route to aid efficient planning. To try out the system, head online to www.ukhaulier.co.uk
SCANIA SIMPLIFIES TACHO DOWNLOAD
S
cania has launched a remote tachograph data download service designed to save operators time and money and help maintain legal compliance. Available to all UK transport operators, the Swedish manufacturer’s service allows fully automated remote downloads from both driver cards and vehicle units from anywhere within Europe. “Every new Scania truck today is fitted with the hardware required for fully automatic downloading and our service has been developed to allow our customers to benefit from this feature,” said David Hickman, director – Services Development & Service Sales for Scania (Great Britain) Ltd. “That said, older Scania vehicles can easily be uprated to enable remote downloading and we can manage non-Scania tachograph data too. “Research has shown half of all operators spend up to an hour per vehicle per month downloading their tachograph data manually. As part of our service, we offer to take charge of an operator’s Company Card,
which allows us to validate and download data on their behalf, thereby relieving them of the burden completely,” Hickman added. All data downloaded remotely is stored on Scania’s secure server. Operators then have the flexibility to use either the manufacturer’s own suite of analysis and reporting tools, or transfer their data to a system of their choosing. The automatic option downloads driver card data every 21 days. Alternatively, the driver can initiate the process at any time by pressing a download button inside the cab.
