Volvo sees safety in advanced scanning tech
V
Volvo reckons its new safety tech acts like a co-driver that can see all around the truck
olvo Trucks has developed new technology which it said can eliminate the risk of accidents caused by a limited field of vision, as it enables a vehicle to take a 360-degree scan of everything in its surroundings. According to the Swedish manufacturer, the vehicle evaluates information from multiple sources simultaneously and suggests actions to avoid incidents. The new tech is the result of a research project called ‘Non-Hit Car and Truck’, which was conducted in co-operation with Volvo Cars. Volvo said it is now possible to enable a vehicle to register and evaluate everything that is happening in its surroundings and suggest actions to avoid accidents, such as collisions with pedestrians, cyclists or other vehicles. If the driver does not respond to the suggested actions, the steering or braking system can then be activated autonomously. “Our vision for traffic safety is to have no accidents involving Volvo trucks,” said Carl Johan Almqvist, Volvo Trucks’ traffic and product safety director. “This unique technology has taken us yet another step towards our vision and will hopefully save many lives in the future.” The main component in this technology is a data platform that fuses the sensory input from cameras, radars and other sensors positioned on all sides of the vehicle. It enables the truck to perform a 360-degree scan of its surroundings every 25 milliseconds. All the data input is interpreted, risk situations are analysed and different
Sureway sets sights on diabetes
A
father whose 14-year-old daughter has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes is helping raise awareness of the condition by decorating a truck with diabetes information. Izzy Lloyd, from Winterbourne Down, Bristol, was diagnosed with the condition in March after becoming extremely thirsty, needing to visit the toilet more often and being tired. These, along with losing weight, are the classic symptoms of Type 1 diabetes in children. These symptoms are the focus of Diabetes UK’s 4 Ts (toilet, thirsty, tired, thinner) campaign to ensure children are diagnosed more swiftly before they become seriously ill. Izzy’s father, Rob, runs Sureway Express Transport, a haulage and transport company based in Avonmouth. He has covered a new truck with the graphics from the 4 Ts campaign to help raise awareness. “Izzy started drinking pints of liquid but she was still thirsty, and she just wasn’t her usual self,” he said. “Our local GP initially thought it could be a kidney infection and put her on antibiotics, but after 10 days she was getting worse. This time the GP did a blood test, and Izzy was referred to Bristol Children’s Hospital on the same day. Izzy’s blood glucose levels were dangerously high, and she spent three days in hospital while they were brought down and we were shown how to manage diabetes. “The following few months have been a bit of a challenge, but Izzy is managing her own levels and injections of insulin really well, with the support of her two brothers and sister. We are all now aware of what needs to happen in an emergency. The need for medication to be available to Izzy at all times
route options for the vehicle are generated. By combining several sensory systems, the technology is claimed to distinguish and identify different road users including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and other vehicles since it can sense both their distance and direction. “The technology can predict traffic scenarios up to five seconds ahead, depending on the speed of the objects, and map out the best plan of action,” said Volvo Trucks systems engineer, Mansour Keshavarz. “In many ways the technology serves as a co-driver – but one that can see all around the vehicle. It can also alert the driver to things that are happening with an alarm signal or braking, for example, so they can react to avoid a collision.” But Volvo said the technology is not yet ready to be applied in a commercial safety system. Compared to vehicle automation in cars, there are specific challenges to overcome when developing this type of technology for heavy vehicles. “Trucks are a different type of vehicle and do not act the same way as cars in traffic,” Keshavarz said. “For example, every truck is loaded differently and their sheer size prevents them from carrying out severe avoidance manoeuvres, such as swerving quickly to avoid a collision. So it is important to research and develop technology specifically for trucks.” However, the manufacturer said the technology is now in the test phase and may hit the market five to 10 years from now.

There are more new vehicles planned next year and we are intending to use the 4 Ts message on the rear of these as well.” The truck, a Mercedes-Benz Actros, is now on the road travelling nationwide. Phaedra Perry, Diabetes UK South West regional manager, said: “We are delighted Rob and his family are raising awareness of the 4Ts campaign in such an eye-catching and amazing way. The lorry looks absolutely fantastic and highlights the four symptoms all parents should be aware of.”

he West Country’s first openaccess bio-gas filling station, which will supply new low emission road transport fuel, has been opened in Bridgwater by Somerset MP Ian LiddellGrainger. The new low emission station – the first for vehicles accessing the West Country and the South West – is part of a growing national network of bio-gas stations across the UK. They allow truck operators to cut fuel and pollution costs by converting to dual-fuel or dedicated gas vehicles, and assist the government to improve air quality and meet long-term carbon reduction targets. “We’re all for clean efficient energy here in the West Country and Bridgwater likes to be first,” Liddell-Grainger said. “This new facility has the potential to save operators money and protect the planet too. Bio-gas may seem a curiosity today but it could soon become a significant contributor to healthier and cheaper freight transport.” The Bridgwater open-access, pumped gas filling station is located at Junction 24 on the M5 and supplies low-emission BioLNG fuel. The facility has the capacity to supply up to 80 vehicles per day and will be expanded as demand increases. The Bridgwater facility was developed by Gasrec, which pioneered the use of Bio-LNG (liquefied landfill biomethane and LNG) for transport fuel and supplies more than 60 per cent of gas-powered HGVs on UK roads from 11 UK refuelling locations.

Held at the Oulton Park race circuit in Cheshire, the event gave invited guests their first chance to put the vehicle through its paces on UK roads. New Actros is the ultimate premium truck for longdistance transport. From the outset, designers and engineers were determined to provide the best possible ADVERTORIAL comfort, driving dynamics, safety, productivity and operating economy, as well as a sweeping range of cab sizes, engine ratings and options, allowing customers to tailor vehicles perfectly for any application. The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The 81 guests took turns to head out on a 17-mile test drive, carefully chosen to simulate a variety of typical driving conditions. Suffering physical & financial pain?
In this two part article I highlight a situation where a driver was put at risk by being required to take an inappropriately large vehicle to small, cramped sites where the manoeuvrability was precarious. As with previous articles, the common factor is the often significant effect on the injured person’s life (physically, emotionally and financially) and although using the existing legal process to make personal injury claims as a means of redress cannot truly compensate for the trauma and inconvenience suffered, it can help not only by providing financial relief by awards of compensation, but also requiring the guilty party to provide the required medical and rehabilitation treatment.
deliveries to large depots, but was later required to use the same vehicle to deliver items to residential premises that were often located on narrow roads where it was impossible to turn the truck and trailer around.
On the day of the accident he was making a delivery to a private house and as he had done on previous occasions, he unhitched the trailer containing the item to be unloaded so he could turn it around. However there was a slope in the road and as he manoeuvred it the trailer started to travel towards him and struck his chest. Mr Mardling suffered pain in his chest and knee, and during the day had to be taken to hospital.

AF Trucks NV has announced it is establishing a marketing and sales office in Istanbul with the aim of further strengthening its market position in Turkey. The company said its new subsidiary – DAF Trucks Turkey Otomotiv Ticaret Limited Sirketi – will be operational December 1, 2014. DAF said it views Turkey as is one of the fastest growing commercial vehicle markets outside the EU. Market volume is expected to grow from 30,000 heavy-duty trucks in 2012 to 42,000 next year in anticipation of Euro 6 emission legislation coming into force in January 2016. Last year, 700 DAF trucks were
registered in Turkey, resulting in a 2.2 per cent market share in the heavy segment. The manufacturer said its objective for the mid-term is to gain a market share of at least six per cent. To support this target, DAF said it aims to double the network of sales dealers from six to 12, and to increase the number of sales locations from 15 to 18 within two years. “Turkey is a mature market which requires the presence of a DAF-owned marketing and sales organization”, said Gregor van der Mark, managing director of DAF Trucks Turkey Otomotiv Ticaret Limited Sirketi. “We thank distributor Tirsan for establishing the DAF brand in Turkey over the past 19 years.”
kills for Logistics (SfL) has launched the Standard of Excellence Driver CPC in response to haulage operators and training providers calling for a showcase of ‘excellent’ courses on offer. “Our aim is to recognise and celebrate providers who consistently deliver highquality training and provide a mechanism to help employers locate and access this excellent training provision,” said Dr Ross Moloney, CEO of Skills for Logistics. SfL said the standard has been developed following extensive consultation with logistics employers. They identified five key metrics, based on high-quality training and business benefit, which the Standard should include – namely trainer quality, course preparation and delivery, learning resources and environment, pre-and posttraining delivery, and a commitment to excellence. Only providers who can demonstrate they meet the Standard of Excellence in all five metrics will be able to use the kitemark, SfL said. According to Maloney, the Standard will enable businesses to identify excellent training providers as well as give them a chance to benchmark their own in-house training against the best in sector. The Standard is available for all providers of logistics training who want to demonstrate their commitment to excellence. Skills for Logistics said it will

Concrete firm mixes it with Arocs upgrade
Hopkins Concrete said it was impressed with Arocs’ fuel economy
S
outh-West’s Mercedes-Benz dealer City West Commercials has received an order for 50 Arocs vehicles from the family-owned and run company, Hopkins Concrete – which marks the UK’s biggest single order yet for the new Merc truck range. Somerset-based Hopkins Concrete supplies readymix concrete and aggregates, and provides muckaway and concrete pumping services, throughout the South West. A vast the majority of the trucks ordered will be Arocs 8x4 rigids with S day cabs and 290 kW (394 bhp) Euro 6 engines. Of these, 25 will be Arocs 3240B models with lightweight Hymix mixer drums, and 20 will be 3240K tipper chassis fitted with steel muckaway bodies by Abba Commercials. The remaining five vehicles will be Arocs 2545 tractor units with StreamSpace cabs, 330 kW (449 bhp) engines and mid-lift axles. Hopkins Concrete operates from headquarters in Wincanton, where it has invested heavily over recent years in modern batching and mixing facilities, and a second depot in Bridgwater. The company, which farms some 3500 acres in addition to meeting the increasing demands of the construction industry as the recovery gathers pace, runs a fleet of 60 trucks. Most of its fleet will be stood down to make way for the new Arocs.
Hopkins operations manager Ben Legg said the fuel efficiency of the first four vehicles ordered by Hopkins was a key factor in the company’s decision to order another 50. “We’ve seen a remarkable improvement in economy from the Arocs,” he said. “In some cases, they’re as much as a mile and a half per gallon ahead of our established vehicles. “Due to the nature of our work, we do not have the luxury of motorway trunking and, spending a lot of time on hills and country lanes, it is rare we achieve the highest fuel figures. But the Arocs are typically returning 8 mpg and sometimes a little more on the exactly the same runs where we were previously getting 6.5-7 mpg. “An improvement of that magnitude, if replicated across the entire fleet, is worth a lot of money to the business.” Also important to Hopkins Concrete was the competitive body and payload allowance of the 8x4 Arocs mixer chassis. “Weight has become a major issue in the concrete industry, because as a result of Euro 6, trucks have inevitably become heavier,” Legg said. “But City West have demonstrated that with a bit of fine-tuning to the chassis, and with Hymix’s lightweight bodies, we’ll still be able to carry our standard 8 m3 load of concrete.”

ransport management solutions firm Microlise has revealed it will be providing telematics technology to Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicles manufacturer, in a move the firms hope will spearhead a change in the way Indian operators manage their fleets. In a multi-million pound deal, the five-year contract will see Microlise supply Tata with fleet telematics, in-vehicle hardware and a web-based portal to enable Tata customers to manage their transport fleets more efficiently. “As the leading commercial vehicle manufacturer in India, we have been spearheading the change in the Indian transport industry for many years now,” said Ravi Pisharody, executive director of the
commercial vehicles business unit at Tata Motors in New Delhi. “We wish to lead the shift towards electronic control of drivelines and other vehicle systems. We also wish to harness the power and potential of such a digital approach by introducing advanced telematics and fleet management services.” Pisharody said Tata FleetMan’s partnership with Microlise was a step in that direction. “We firmly believe this association has the potential to transform the way commercial vehicle fleets are managed in India,” he said. Microlise’s primary base of operations is in the UK, where the majority of its customers are based. However, it also operates internationally across 139 countries and provides products in 28 languages.
Working together, we can build a better industry for all. The introduction of CPC legislation is an issue that affects us all, no matter what the badge on the front of your vehicle. SPEAK BACK
What’s your view? Star Letter MORE COMMON SENSE? Sorry to be sending you this email, but I feel a ball surely needs to get rolling on this subject. A lot of people in the industry are getting quite concerned that we seem to already have a shortage of drivers in the UK, and it also seems no youngsters wish to come into the job – which is a major worry to all. Personally, I feel the country as a whole needs to have a complete overhaul from top to bottom. People need to stop talking complete rubbish and start saying what can we do, rather than saying what we can’t do. But that is just my feeling. After pulling up with my lorry tonight in the BP at Newmarket (I was out of the way, needless to say), I witnessed a so-called driver taking up one of the only two lanes out of the garage for lorries. Hazard lights flashing for 45 minutes while he took a break on the pumps! Why not stop, get his stuff, and move out to the next lay-by, I wondered? This now-Driver-CPC-qualified driver was not giving a jot for other drivers trying to do a job. I put it to you sirs: What chance do we have? With so-called drivers having this level of common sense, it
leaves me dumbfounded every single day – and trust me, I could go on and on and on. Just for your information, after being born into a lorrydriving family (dad and uncle), I’m now 46 and have been driving over 20 years and I have seen many changes (from Scammell couplings to fifth wheels, to name but one), but I am already thinking of getting out of driving because I am surrounded by idiots by the thousand, in factories and lorries alike. I no longer want to be associated with the people in this industry. Could this be just one reason why the industry is in such a mess? Again, I am sorry I could not be more positive in this email, but do you think it could ever be possible that we could ditch the health and safety attitude and the trucking/trucker image, and get back to a more common-sense, roll-up-your-sleeves lorry driver environment? It’s a little dream of mine, I know – but then, as an industry, we might be able to show the rest of the country how it’s done. Simon Goodjohn By email

BACKWARDS/FORWARDS
I was catching up on your Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ truckingmag) while my daughter, Porsche, was in hospital having her appendix out, and I noticed the picture of the tipping trailer on a low-loader. I particularly noted the comments asking why it was loaded forward first onto the trailer. I started my own recovery company and ran it for 26 years, and we covered all modes of transport on the road and employed 45 staff. We bought the top-ofthe-range Landol sliding tri-axle trailer imported from the USA by Roger Dyson Recovery Systems and convert for use in this country. We got in mainly to recover petrol tankers because they don’t have landing legs, so when they get a fault with the trailer, they cannot be recovered in the normal way. So with this trailer, we could pull the whole set-up in one. We also used to recover lots of buses; and we went to the other side of Germany to recovery one of our customer’s buses following an accident. Our trailer made the whole job so easy, and the Germany recovery company even went out

remarkable trucks. The trucks were first developed in the 1920s for German military use, but sadly, very few examples remain today. This is largely due to them having to operate in harsh conditions which they were not originally built to withstand, coupled with the fact that a shortage of transportation after the war meant many vehicles were driven to destruction. Nevertheless, some do still exist – and this book sets out to chart their history, design, construction and service in a highly technical, yet engrossing manner.

CYCLING BAN?
As I have a caravan in Callander, I’ve had experience of suicidal cyclists on those narrow winding roads the area is famous for. I’m glad David W Gunn in the Autumn issue missed that thoughtless cyclist just north of Lochearnhead, as he said if he had killed him, not only would the cyclist’s family have been devastated, but he would’ve no doubt been wracked with guilt. I like to get out on my bike, but I would never pedal on those roads. Thankfully, there’s no need as the area is well served with cycle paths. It seems to be so-called ‘professional’ cycle club riders who have no thought for other road users, but I think it’s a wee bit of overkill to ban cyclists from our roads. Colin Black By email

recent survey run by our sister brand Transport Café has unearthed some interesting insights into professional driver opinions. Along with PJM Lorry Park in Coventry, TC put together a list of questions centered on what’s fueling the nation’s drivers, as well as a few industry-related questions. The aim was to get a snapshot of what drivers are eating, what they want from a great transport café and how they feel about the trucking industry in general. With a great response of 120 truckers taking part - including those who came through PJM Lorry Park and those who entered online - the Trucker Tucker survey revealed the following: When asked if truck stops offered enough choice to be healthy, 58.3 per cent said no. However, when asked if knowing nutritional values would help to influence their food choices, 57.5 per cent said no.
6-7 Menzies Road, Port Zone, Dover, CT16 2HQ.
According to this selection of UK drivers, the top three things that make a great café are: 1. Good food, 2. Clean washing facilities, and 3. Friendly staff. And, when asked about the Driver CPC and their opinion on the mandatory training, the response was very clear. A total of 66.7 per cent felt negatively about the DCPC, while only 19.1 per cent said it was a positive step for the industry. A total of 14.2 per cent gave no answer or a neutral response. Regarding the Driver CPC, some surveyed drivers gave some interesting opinions, which ranged from the legislation being “as useful as a chocolate fireguard”, and “it’s crap, I’ve done the same course five times and got my CPC card”, to “whether we agree or not, it’s a legal requirement and I make sure I’m legal at all times”. CLEAN SWEEP FOR GO PLANT’S LFs
U
K specialist municipal vehicle hire firm Go Plant Ltd has ordered 54 DAF LF 15-tonne and 18-tonne Euro 6 sweepers. Over 90 per cent of Go Plant’s sweeper fleet are already DAF LF vehicles, which usually work eight to 12 hours a day across the UK over a lifespan of 10 to 13 years each. They are hired for a variety of self-drive, short-term rental and operated hire contracts in the public and private sectors, such as local authorities and construction sites. The new Euro 6 trucks have been fitted with both Johnston VT651 and VT801 bodies featuring a heavy-duty, stainless steel body with water tank, hydraulically operated sweeping system and quick-change mechanism for channel and wide-sweep brushes. “DAF has been a chosen supplier for many years as we have always been very happy with the reliability and running costs of its vehicles and its policy of continuous improvement,” said Paul Langham, Go Plant managing director. “The LF is exactly the right size for its purpose, and our customers prefer it too – so as we put a real emphasis on working in partnership, if they’re happy, then so are we,” he said. DAF’s marketing manager, Phil Moon, pointed out the LF has also been used for
other purposes in the municipal utilities sector, such as gulley emptiers, refuse collection and recycling vehicles. “In fact, its bodybuilderfriendly chassis has been engineered specifically for the sweeper application to make it easy for body installation,” he said. To make space for the brushes the exhaust after-treatment system, the AdBlue tank and the batteries are all mounted on a gantry behind the cab, while the fuel tank is mounted in the rear of the frame protected by the factory-fitted rear under-run protection beam.

Volvo Trucks has lifted the lid on its all-new FH series of heavy trucks, designed with the driver in mind and a focus on fuel economy.
MAN VS FOOD STYLE OMLETTE CHALLENGE 12 egg omelette, fillings and chips, against the clock.
Details were scarce when we went to press ahead of the official launch on September 5, but the Swedish manufacturer told Truckstop News the new FHs will be available in both Euro 5 and 6 form, and pack a vast amount of upgrades and improvements. Leading the charge for fuel efficiency is Volvoʼs new I-See function (Truckstop News, issue 301). The system, which works alongside the I-Shift automated transmission, is claimed to cut consumption by five per cent by storing information about the route the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure progress is as economical as possible,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Truck Corporation. An additional five per cent saving in fuel use is possible with Volvo Trucksʼ new Fuel Package. This package encompasses training and monthly assistance – Fuel Advice – and its aim is to cut fuel costs by changing driving styles and increasing knowledge of how to drive for maximum fuel-efficiency. Volvoʼs new I-Torque Euro 6 driveline – production of which for the European market will get under way in autumn 2013 – should make for additional fuel savings. “ITorque reduces fuel consumption by up to With its new Volvo FH series, Volvo is ʻpushing four the envelopeʼ in re-defining what a premium per cent. Together with I-See and other minor truck can offer. improvements, the result is fuel consumption can drop by up to 10 per cent. For the average truck, this can equate to a saving of up to 4100 litres of fuel a year,” Nilsson continued. On-road manners have received much attention, and Volvo is claiming the new trucks offer exceptional handling thatʼs much like a car. “To put things into perspective, we can even offer independent front suspension, although initially only on left-hand drive vehicles. This world-first takes handling to unsurpassed levels in the truck world,” Nilsson said.

We Urgently require Professional Class 1 (C+E) Drivers
Also of benefit to drivers are improved seats and driving position, optimised to provide a better view of the road. This is aided by an increase in the cabʼs usable window area and an innovative slimmer rear-view mirror design. Stalks and controls are arranged in priority so the most important ones are now closest to the driver, and the steering wheel now has a neck tilt function – another world-first in the truck world. Safety is high on the agenda, An all-new cab structure features more upright A-pillars, which give the cab an additional 1 m3 of interior space. This means an extra 300 litres (10.5 cu ft) of storage capacity, as well as greater comfort on board.“The cab is optimised both for work and leisure time,” Nilsson said. “A better bed, integrated parking cooler, new lighting and low noise levels among other features, all increase the chance of pleasant relaxation and a good nightʼs sleep, which in turn means drivers are less tired and more alert.” Production of the Volvo FH will start in spring 2013 for the European market.

SAINT GOBAIN NAMES BEST DRIVER BUFFALOAD BOOSTS PALLET CAPACITY
S
aint-Gobain UK hosted its annual Driver of the Year finals – sponsored by MAN Truck & Bus UK – on Tuesday, October 14 at the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) testing facility in Warwickshire. Honouring the best and most-improved drivers from the six Saint-Gobain brands involved in the 2014 Driver Development Programme (British Gypsum, Formula, Isover,
Artex, Gibbs & Dandy and Minster), it was a hotbed of driving talent. The 18 qualifying finalists’ driving skills were under the spotlight and they were assessed on either a telemetry reporting programme or a manual process. A range of skills were put to the test, including manoeuvring and braking on different surfaces that were created to simulate weather conditions such as rain and ice. The overall winner of the competition was Andy Mason from British Gypsum. He said: “This is the second year I’ve been selected as a finalist and I’m gobsmacked that I’ve won, given the calibre of drivers I’ve been up against. I’ve really enjoyed every aspect of the competition and today’s event.” Richard Batley, human resources director for Saint-Gobain UK and Ireland, said: “The Saint-Gobain UK Driver of the Year competition is an opportunity for us to recognise the critical role our drivers play in fulfilling our promise to our customers, and why on-going driver development is essential. Congratulations to all 18 qualifying drivers for making it to the final – an achievement in itself – and to the overall winner, Andy Mason.”
Buffaload’s new six-bay docking facility will increase pallet throughput
B
uffaload Logistics has opened a new six-bay cross-docking facility at its 16 acre Huntingdon headquarters which the company reckons will increase capacity by up to 50 per cent and provide a permanent ‘buffer’ for peak seasonal demands. Designed to accommodate Buffaload’s high-capacity double-deck, temperaturecontrolled trailers, the chilled facility will take in trunked loads from various suppliers during the afternoon and then cross-dock via specific customer-designated lanes for consolidation and onward movement to various retailer RDCs throughout the night.
“This new chilled pallet handling facility complements our existing cross-docking operations and gives us the capacity to cope with any level of demand,” said sales director, Graham Usher. “We currently operate 65 double-deck reefers, each of which can carry up to 44 pallets at up to 1.85 m in height and at 60 per cent greater capacity than a conventional 13.6 m trailer. This adds up to a significant pallet throughput every night.” Buffaload added it is planning to open a 7500 m2 temperature-controlled warehouse and six-bay workshop at the Huntingdon site next year, and will also be taking delivery of additional double-deck trailers during 2014.

new brand of AdBlue additive for truck and bus operations is launching in the UK with the aim of offering customers a high-quality service that’s ready to compete with established suppliers. Spearheaded by founding executive chairman Antonio de Bruijn, who first registered the AdBlue name, the new additive brand – called Top!Blue – is due for launch in November and will be produced in the UK at six blending plants located around the country. “Existing suppliers are getting a bit lazy,” de Bruijn told Truckstop News. “I believe the Top!Blue offer brings a new dimension to the British AdBlue market and that we can provide vehicle operators with innovations and a more efficient solution than is currently available. Our team has a unique understanding of the product and how to supply it efficiently through local operations.” Besides efficiency, de Bruijn said the venture will be looking to improve customer service in the additive market. “If there are two dominant suppliers in a market experiencing high growth, there is almost by definition room for improvement,” he said. said the time was right to bring a new AdBlue brand into the UK. “Many may wonder why we are entering what seems to be a saturated market, but it has strong attraction for us,” he said. “We know we can deliver excellent value thanks to being vertically integrated and offer an enhanced logistics chain through having the most efficient supply set up in the UK market. “The timing of our entry appears to be right as market volume for AdBlue is expected to triple in the next decade, and customers deserve further reliable supply choices.” Ansorena said the brand will be reaching out to major fleets over the coming weeks will offer a complete service, including the supply of additive storage and dispensing containers. Top!Blue is offering to provide customers with 3000 or 6000-litre AdBlue storage tanks, which it can install along with integrated dispensing equipment with a two-year price warranty. The brand will make bulk deliveries in road tankers directly to these fully bonded AdBlue storage and dispensing units, and provide automatic stock control linked to a telemetric system which enables Top!Blue to adjust deliveries to maintain agreed stock levels and provide tank maintenance over time if necessary.

erwick-based logistics provider Northwards has taking on four new Schmitz Cargobull aluminium fixedroof curtainsider trailers. The firm said it has been buying Schmitz Cargobull trailers since it was founded in 2002, and rates their durability and performance – which it said was essential when an average day consists of 14 hours on a ferry crossing the choppy North Sea. “We are running Schmitz Cargobull trailers that have been in service for 12 years, which is testament to how well built they are. They stand up to a lot of punishment, and they are easy to maintain, so we’re very pleased to have some more,”

said Northwards commercial director, Neil Leslie. “We did evaluate trailers from other manufacturers, but no-one could deliver to the schedule we needed.” As the trailers will only be used on UK routes, they have been specified to be as tall as possible – but still able to fit on any of the ferries currently plying the island route. The lowest-roof ferry from the Northern Isles is 4.6 m, so the curtainsiders reach 4.5 m tall, maximising payload while leaving just enough clearance to board safely. Each trailer also features four pairs of bright yellow ferry hold-down shackles for maximum stability on board.

United Biscuits is powering some of its truck fleet with waste cooking oil
I
nternational biscuits and cakes manufacturer United Biscuits (UB) has announced it has developed a method of using waste cooking oil to power 12 of its truck fleet. Estimated to save up to 97 per cent in CO2 emissions compared to traditional diesel fuel, the project forms part of the company’s ‘Fewer and Friendlier Miles’ campaign. UB said the waste vegetable oil, a byproduct from snacks manufacturing, is processed into Ultra Biofuel and the adapted truck fleet are set to recycle 500 tonnes of waste cooking oil a year. The project is the result of a partnership with Convert2Green (formerly Biomotive Fuels) to develop an engine modification across UB’s truck fleet, which has allowed its trucks to be 100 per cent fuelled by waste oils. The partnership, which began in 2011
A HILARY DEVEY DRAGONS’ DEN INVESTMENT
following two years of initial investigations by UB into alternative fuels, has also resulted in the use of new biofuel vehicle management systems from German company Bioltec in 10 of its Mercedes-Benz tractor units currently being used nationwide. As part of the project, a 30,000-litre heated refuelling station has been installed at UB’s Ashby depot. UB said it now plans to roll out the project further across the business and has recently converted two of its brand new Euro 6 vehicles to run on Ultra Biofuel. “It is estimated the UK generates 250 million litres of waste oils a year, and we are delighted to be able to demonstrate a sustainable use for this waste material with potential to deliver significant CO2 savings from transport within the UK,” said Rob Wright, head of distribution, United Biscuits.
DAIMLER MAKES US MILESTONES

aimler Trucks North America is celebrating the production of its three-millionth vehicle – a Freightliner Cascadia Evolution – which is set to go into service at North American logistics and transportation service company, Schneider. The Cascadia Evolution is equipped with an integrated Detroit drivetrain and fully automated DT12 transmission. Daimler said the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution achieves up to seven per cent higher fuel efficiency than its 2010 predecessor. In addition to the announcement of the three-millionth commercial vehicle, Daimler Trucks is celebrating two further milestones in the North American production network. In June 2014, Daimler topped the million mark
of Detroit axles produced in the aggregates plant in Redford, Michigan, where the company has been making axles for trucks since 2003. Additionally, in July, Detroit produced its 250,000th engine, which also rolled off the Redford production line.
TOLL TESTING CAUSES DARTFORD DELAY
N
ew payment arrangements will come into effect at the Dartford Crossing during late November, the Highways Agency has announced. The ‘free-flow’ tolls will allow drivers to use the crossing without having to stop at barriers to hand over payment. Instead, they will be able to pay through a variety of methods including telephone, text message, online and at retail outlets.
The scheme was originally planned to be in place by October 28, but the HA said it has delayed the launch to ensure the system works properly before going live. The website, systems and infrastructure needed to operate the new arrangements have been installed and are currently being tested to ensure they operate reliably and are easy to use, the Agency said.
“Dart Charge is a massive change for drivers using the Dartford Crossing and it’s only right it is thoroughly tested before being introduced,” said Highways Agency project leader, Nigel Gray. “We want to help drivers to be ready for the improvements we’re making at the Crossing. We can reassure drivers we’ll give them plenty of notice before the changes are introduced. They will have

considerable time to sign up for a pre-pay account, which for most will be the easiest and cheapest way to pay the charge – with discounts of up to a third on every crossing.” HA said until Dart Charge goes live, the current payment arrangements for the road user charge at the Crossing will continue - cash at the Crossing, through a DART-Tag or local residents account.

Op bigs-up driver first aid initiative
Y
orkshire/Lincolnshire operator Clugston Distribution has shown its support for the Driver First Assist (DFA) initiative by putting one of its curtainsider trailers into full DFA livery. The first 17 volunteers from the company’s pool of over 100 drivers underwent DFA training
at the beginning of the year, led by professional trainers from the East Midlands Ambulance Service. During the course, drivers learnt how to quickly and accurately assess a road traffic accident scene, provide a precise location and an accurate summary of the situation to
Firm that broke driver’s hours regs is ‘rotten from the head down’
A
transport manager who actively colluded in getting HGV drivers to break the rules and work over their legal hours has been disqualified from the industry for five years. Garrath Jones, of Bellview Road, Worthing, knew drivers’ journeys could not be completed legally but did nothing about it, the region’s traffic commissioner has concluded. The ruling by Nick Denton, the industry regulator for London and the South East, comes after a public inquiry heard Mr Jones had been convicted of 15 offences of conspiracy to falsify a record. Mr Jones lent his driver’s card, which captures a driver’s duty, to another employee – so the other driver could work beyond the hours he was legally allowed to and hide the offences. “Mr Jones has betrayed the trust placed in his professionalism by society,” Denton said. “He has endangered the road safety of other road users and has enabled the company to compete unfairly against those companies which abide by the rules.” He added drivers working for Philson Haulage (Southern) Ltd had been bullied into completing jobs. The firm had scheduled journeys which were at the limit of what was legally possible. The work could only be completed legally if drivers did not encounter any problems during the journey, such as hitting traffic. An investigation by DVSA in 2013 revealed numerous offences of drivers making false records. Drivers were either driving without a card or using another driver’s card to hide offences of insufficient breaks or rest. A DVSA traffic examiner also found more than 36,000 km of missing mileage from records produced. The traffic commissioner also strongly criticised the role of the firm’s former director, Philip Dickinson.
During the inquiry, Mr Dickinson said he had not known the extent of what was happening. After finding out, he claimed to have asked an individual from the new management team, Paul Willis, to put a compliance procedure in place. The company was taken over by Gregory Distribution (Holdings) Ltd in February 2013. However, Mr Willis, Gregory Distribution’s head of compliance and business support, told the traffic commissioner Mr Dickinson had not reported any of the driver’s hours abuse to him. He had discovered it himself. Denton also heard from 11 drivers employed by the Philson Haulage (Southern) Ltd, some of whom claimed Philip Dickinson had been involved in giving them routes and instructions. A total of 13 drivers were prosecuted for false record offences, with the majority being fined. Three employees, including Garrath Jones, received suspended prison sentences. Mr Dickinson’s solicitor told the traffic commissioner he should attach little weight to the evidence of criminals. He admitted Mr Dickinson should have known what was happening, but claimed ignorance was much less serious than deliberate action. “This was a very bad driver’s hours case in which the director carried a large degree of personal responsibility,” Denton concluded in a written decision issued after the hearing. “He has tried to avoid sanction by blaming everyone but himself for what went on. The abuse of the driver’s hours rules was known about at least in general terms by the sole director at the time, Mr Dickinson. [He] also abetted the breaking of the rules on at least one occasion. The operator was rotten from the head down. “There is no place in the road transport industry for operators like Mr Dickinson.” Denton made an order to disqualify Mr Dickinson from being involved in an operator licence for five years.
the emergency services both ahead of their attendance at the scene and on arrival, and take steps to contain the incident by administering basic, but potentially life-saving first aid. For each driver, the training qualifies as a module towards their Driver CPC. “We see Driver First Assist as a very
worthwhile idea that resonates with us and our overall approach to health and safety,” said David Heath, Clugston Distribution’s head of logistics. “As the word spreads about the value of the training, we are seeing further interest among our drivers, which is likely to lead to further training sessions.”
Gas-powered Stralis hit the road Italian firm LC3 has taken 50 gas Stralis
I
talian truck manufacturer Iveco has received its first contract order for 50 Stralis Hi-Ways powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The order was placed by LC3, an Italian company specialising in temperature-controlled transport and container trucks. Following the opening of the first ENI Liquefied Natural Gas Station in Piacenza, LC3 was the first company in Italy to purchase the Stralis LNG and use them on the country’s roads, the manufacturer said. The Stralis Natural Power LNG is powered by a 330 bhp Cursor 8 CNG Euro 6 engine. It is fitted with a 510-litre cryogenic LNG fuel tank and four 70-litre CNG tanks, which gives a fuel range of over 750 km, Iveco said. Natural gas engines produce lower emissions than Euro 6 diesel powerplants. Natural gas produces 95 per cent fewer particulates in comparison to diesel, and a 35 per cent lower level of NOx. The production of CO2 is also greatly reduced. Natural gas is also significantly cheaper than diesel. Indeed, Iveco said operators can reduce their fuel costs by up to 40 per cent by specifying LNG vehicles on their fleet. According to Iveco, over 200 LNG vehicles are currently in circulation throughout Europe – chiefly in Spain and the Netherlands, where the appropriate infrastructure is well established.

DAF dials up efficiency
D
AF Trucks has used the IAA Show in Hannover to unveil a string of new innovations aimed at increasing the operating efficiency of its trucks for a range of applications. First to be unveiled was a Low Deck variant of the Dutch manufacturer’s Euro 6 CF and XF tractor units for volume transport. By fitting low-profile tyres (315/45/R22.5) and adapting the air suspension, DAF engineers have enabled the fifth wheel height to be reduced from 96 to 91 cm. As a result, within the maximum vehicle height of 4 m, trailers with an internal height of 3.00 m can be used to enable carriage of volumes of more than 100 m3. An internal height of 3.00 m is also valuable for transport operators working in the automotive sector, where 1 m high standardised containers are often used. These 1 m containers can be stacked three-high in the semi-trailer. The new DAF CF and XF Low Deck tractors are available with air suspension on the front axle – though a new singleleaf parabolic suspension has also been developed. A new roof deflector for the XF Low Deck with Super Space Cab aids aerodynamics
and provides a 1.5 per cent saving in terms of fuel and CO2 emissions. DAF said the Low Deck tractors are available with a wheelbase of 3.60 and 3.80 m and are powered by the 10.8-litre PACCAR MX-11 and 12.9-litre PACCAR MX-13 engines. The manufacturer also used the show to reveal its new Predictive Cruise Control with Predictive Shifting. This option will be made available in January 2015 on Euro 6 CF and XF models with an automated AS-Tronic 12-speed gearbox, and have been developed to further improve vehicle efficiency. DAF said its Predictive Cruise Control uses GPS technology to determine the exact position of the vehicle and to know which driving circumstances have to be taken into account over the next 1-2 km of road – effectively ‘looking’ ahead to anticipate slopes and descents. The driver sets the desired speed in advance, as well as the permitted deviation above and below this value, with three pre-programmed options available for the permitted downward deviation. Within the specified range, Predictive Cruise Control determines the ideal speed and Predictive Shifting selects the ideal gear.
Low-deck XF was on display at recent IAA Show in Hannover DAF said the idea behind both technologies is to drive as long as possible in the highest gear possible, and consequently in the optimal rpm range. As the vehicle nears the end of a hill climb, the system strives to stay in a higher gear. If a hill climb is immediately followed by
a descent, less fuel is injected before the top of the climb, making use of the vehicle mass to ‘push’ the vehicle over the top. A higher gear is selected automatically as soon as the system knows the gradient of the descent is about to increase.
Whiskey haulier hails Lynch lifts it with Range C special future-proof tankers L ondon-based L Lynch Plant Hire and Haulage Ltd has taken delivery of a new 80-tonne gvw Renault Range C-520 6x4 with a Fassi F660RA crane. Supplied by Renault Trucks London, with the crane supplied by Fassi main agent Transloader Services, the Range C is a bespoke addition to Lynch’s 150-strong Renault, Volvo and DAF haulage fleet. According to Lynch, its relationship with Renault Trucks London and the vehicle’s performance during test drives were the key factors in its decision-making process. The Range C will be based in Lynch’s London depot and will work on new ventures with rail construction companies across the UK, including moving 60 ft rail. “With the UK expanding its rail network, including HS2, Lynch wants to be one step ahead of the competition,” said the firm’s transport manager Keith Talbot. “With such a unique and specialist vehicle in our fleet, I believe we are the first plant hire company offering one of this type. “As an ex-driver myself, I know what I’m looking for – and although I haven’t personally bought Renault Trucks before, I have been really convinced by the new range, which I think has been much improved,” Keith added. “When we tested the new Range C, we were particularly impressed by the new gearbox, the traction and grip; the Renault just kept ploughing on regardless.” The firm said it was so impressed, it has added further purchases, with an order bank in the region of an additional 80-plus Renault trucks. “The new Euro 6 vehicles are meeting our demands from 32-tonne tippers to the new tractor units,” Keith concluded.
Carntyne’s new tankers are spec’d to meet current and future regs
S
cottish whisky industry logistics provider Carntyne Transport has invested over £3m in the development and introduction of road tankers which comply with new government legislation. The legislation, which will take effect in 2024, requires road tankers within the Scottish whisky industry to be operated from ground level. This is a significant transition, as tankers operating within this area are traditionally top-filled and operated from an upper gantry. A number of whisky manufacturers have taken an early lead in converting or constructing tanker loading and unloading areas that comply with the new legislation as part of a new site, however the full transition across the industry will continue through until the legislation takes effect in 2024. Now Glasgow-based Carntyne Transport
Operator spec’d Range C with Fassi crane
has announced it has assigned over £3m to hybrid tanks, an intermediary design which will accommodate both traditional top-loading and the soon-to-be-introduced bottom loading. The hybrid tanks, which have been designed in collaboration with the whisky manufacturers and Scottish Whisky Industry Association, are able to service both types of loading bay and enable Carntyne’s vehicles to operate across all sites during the transition period. “The legislation can only be welcomed,” said David Paterson, managing director of Carntyne Transport. “The removal of working at height has an obvious reduction in risk and such an improvement to health and safety can only be a good thing.” Carntyne Transport added it is currently undertaking a conversion programme of its existing tanker fleet, and new tankers introduced are of a similar specification.
