Kevin Archer, director of AK Commercials in Bristol, said:” “It was absolutely wonderful to be a finalist again in the Isuzu Truck Dealership Challenge for the second year running. We fielded exactly the same team as last year. We have a wonderful team at AK Commercials and everyone works to a very high standard. We’re all very hands-on and passionate about what we do.

“For me personally, every day is a ‘teaching and learning day’. We think Isuzu raised the bar this year – it was tough last year, but even tougher this time, though still very enjoyable and not too stressful. “We’ll definitely enter again next year. It’s a great way to keep us on our toes and meet other top ITUK dealerships too,” Archer concluded.

andbach-based specialist road tanker haulier James Lynch & Sons (Transport) Ltd is celebrating the family-owned company’s 60th anniversary with a high-spec new series Volvo FH 6x2 tractor unit – the first to join the Cheshire firm’s fleet. James Lynch & Sons currently operates 38 Volvo tractor units, and over 50 rubber-lined road tanker trailers for the carriage of acid and alkaline specialist chemicals. These are used in a wide range of industrial applications and each tanker is dedicated to one product. The company has an international operating licence and, in addition to the UK, makes deliveries across Europe. Managing director Mike Denny said the company began operating Volvo trucks around 25 years ago: “We operate Volvo trucks because of their reliability,” he said. “The new FH helps update the image of our fleet.” Specification of the new FH, which was supplied by Thomas Hardie Commercials at Middlewich, includes the D13K Euro 6 engine rated at 460 bhp and I-Shift automated gearbox. The vehicle also features a Globetrotter cab, leather upholstery and underbunk fridgefreezer for additional driver comfort. Although the firm carries out its own maintenance using Volvo-trained technicians, the new FH will be serviced by Thomas Hardie Commercials, Middlewich on a Volvo Gold R&M contract which includes Uptime Assurance.

MOUNTAIN MAN IS WASTE FIRM’S FIRST M ountain Transport has added a new Euro 6 MAN tractor unit to its fleet ahead of nine new Legras walking-floor trailers, which are also set to join the firm in January 2015. The latest addition represents a new move for the Sleaford waste recovery and skip-hire operator, as the Munich marque enters the fleet for the first time since the company operated an original R-registered MAN F8 model 19.321 some 25 years ago. Transport director Nick Mountain said he had fond memories of the old F8: “My father bought the MAN F8 over 25 years ago, when I was in short trousers,” he said. “MAN had a strong brand identity then, and that reputation for building tough, reliable trucks exists today.” The firm’s new MAN TGX 26.480 6x2

with a Midlift Lite axle was acquired and funded through MAN Financial Services. “With a new MAN dealership, HRVS, in close proximity, it made sense for us to take a closer look at the TGX product,” Mountain added. “Although our relationship with HRVS has only just started, support from the MAN team leading up to the keyhandover has been first class. “The new 480 bhp unit has made quite an impact – its regular driver says it’s the best truck he’s driven in the last 20 years. We’re very pleased with initial fuel consumption, too.” Coupled to a walking-floor trailer, the new MAN will operate throughout the UK transporting waste residues from customers for recycling at Mid UK recycling facilities and processing plants in Lincolnshire.

he UK government has come under increased pressure to cut pollution from diesel vehicles in light of a new ruling from the European Court of Justice, which has criticised high levels of nitrogen dioxide in cities chiefly caused by vehicles running on diesel fuel. The ruling is likely to see the government step up efforts to establish a viable platform and increased access to alternative fuels for road transport

operators – including compressed natural gas (CNG) and bio-methane. “Gas is the number one choice as a fuel for trucks, and there is the potential for a major shift from diesel now,” said John Baldwin, managing director of CNG Services and a member of the DfT Transport Energy Task Force. “We have 10,000 km of high-pressure gas grid which is ideal for making CNG, and we have surveyed bus and refuse truck

depots – 90 per cent are located within one mile of the gas grid. “Also, with 130 million kg of biomethane forecast to be injected into the gas grid in 2015, we can look to a future with more and more vehicles powered with renewable gas, reducing CO2 as well as removing diesel emissions and making our cities quieter,” he added. “As many as 29,000 people are dying from air pollution in the UK and we are

going to miss our targets to clean up cities by 2015.” CNG Services said it is leading two TSB projects to assess the benefits to the UK haulage industry of a shift to natural gas. It also said that business switching to low-carbon bio-CNG could make significant savings in fleet operating costs, while having lower emissions of NOx and particulates.

BLISTERING DELIVERY SOLVES HAULIER’S BACON

I

ver-based haulage company European UK Road Operations has taken delivery of a brand-new built-to-order curtainside trailer from Schmitz Cargobull – just hours after signing on the dotted line. Managing director Paul Bedwell faced a dilemma of needing a new tri-axle curtainsider at a moment’s notice, and telephoned Schmitz Cargobull’s local area sales manager, Craig Kedda, to enquire about lead times. “When Craig said he could build me a trailer within 24 hours, I was blown away,” Bedwell said. “He solved my predicament in an instant. What’s more, the price was competitive, so I didn’t even bother ringing anyone else.” Bedwell placed the order and completed the paperwork with Schmitz Cargobull on a Friday, before dispatching a two-man crew on the Sunday night to collect the trailer. They arrived at the factory in Altenberge, Germany on

Monday morning, and then headed straight to Amsterdam to pick-up an important load. Schmitz Cargobull’s Altenberge facility has the capacity to build up to 200 curtainsider trailers per day, and is one of the company’s nine manufacturing sites located across Europe. “We don’t build trailers for stock, but if a customer wants a standard-specification trailer, we can normally build these in a matter of days, sometimes even hours,” said Craig Kedda. “This puts us in a very strong position, particularly when so many UK trailer manufacturers are quoting several months to fulfill new orders.” The new curtainsider is being used by European UK Road Operations primarily on exhibitions, television and film set work. It typically operates at gross train weights of between 24 and 38 tonnes, and is expected to remain on the fleet for up to 10 years.

Airedale said drawbar set-up will boost operating efficiency

U

K chemical manufacturer and distributor Airedale Chemical has specified drawbar trailers for its three new Euro 6 DAF XF trucks which recently joined its fleet. One of the firm’s new XFs has a bespoke tanker body for bulk chemical solution distribution developed by Crosslands Tankers in Accrington, while the other two have curtainsider bodies and trailers for carrying packaged chemical products. The firm said it chose this relatively unusual vehicle combination to make it easier to access some sites and to improve efficiency and responsiveness of customer deliveries. This, it hoped, would be achieved through the flexibility of being able to dismount the drawbar trailer unit for separate filling or unloading, while the

other part can travel to another location or return to the Airedale Chemical site in West Yorkshire. The trucks will be on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are expected to travel 100,000 miles a year, carrying 44 tonnes of specialist chemicals to customers all over the UK and abroad. Eleven of the 17 vehicles the company owns and manages itself are now DAF. Each vehicle is fitted with a driver performance system which monitors and evaluates each driver on how well they perform on MPG and efficiency. The new XF trucks were the first Euro 6 models to join the Airedale Chemical fleet, and the firm said it has already ordered two more based on early fuel returns and driver feedback.

“We have a long and healthy commercial relationship with DAF that has provided a good foundation for the expansion of our fleet,” said transport manager, Graham Bird. “We continue to choose DAF trucks as they are well designed with a nice appearance and have competitive ongoing costs with reasonably priced parts, plus a good MPG fuel return.” The specialist nature of the hazardous chemical substances delivered by Airedale Chemical mean every vehicle has a bespoke design manufactured to comply with strict ADR (European Agreement for the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) regulations. In addition, its drivers also have to be ADR trained. The vehicles were supplied by Lancashire DAF in Preston.

early two-thirds of drivers (63 per cent) do not check their anti-freeze, oil or water before setting off on a winter journey, a new Highways Agency survey has revealed. The 2013-2014 Annual Road User Satisfaction Survey (ARUSS) also found almost half of drivers (45 per cent) don’t do any winter checks at all on their vehicle. The Agency said it is encouraging road users to spend a few minutes making sure they – and their vehicle – are fully prepared for severe weather. The ARUSS asked just over 1000 drivers what kind of checks they make before winter journeys. Results showed less than half (41 per cent) said they checked their lights were working before setting out. Just over half (53 per cent) of drivers don’t have warm clothes in their car in case of emergency, and fewer than half (42 per cent) of drivers carry de-icer in their vehicle. Almost two thirds (64 per cent) don’t carry drinking water in their vehicle, and only a third (33 per cent) carry a warm drink. Around the same number (32 per cent) take food, and (37 per cent) said they packed a blanket. “Drivers should really keep an emergency winter kit in their vehicle in case something goes wrong during a winter journey,” said John McTaggart, head of on-road services for the Highways Agency. “Crucial items like warm clothing, food, warm drinks, a road atlas, shovel, torch, ice-scraper and de-icer could really help if your vehicle breaks down in bad weather.”

LIDL ITALIA GIVES GAS THE GREEN LIGHT

I

talian truck manufacturer Iveco has announced that Lidl Italia will operate what it’s calling the country’s largest natural gas fleet through its nationwide network of 570 sales points. A fleet of 15 Stralis Natural Power LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) trucks with Cursor 8 CNG Euro 6 engines will be rolled out in 2015. The implementation of this LNG fleet is managed by temperature controlled transport logistics specialist, LC3. The 15 vehicles destined for Lidl Italia are part of a supply of 50 Stralis LNG vehicles which Iveco is delivering to LC3. Iveco said LNG is considered one of the ‘cleanest’ fuels on the market. The truckmaker said compared to diesel, natural gas significantly reduces a vehicle’s overall impact on its surrounding environment (95 per cent less particulate emissions, 35 per cent lower NOx emissions and up to 10 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions). The manufacturer also said LNG vehicles are cost 20 per cent less to operate than standard vehicle trucks.

MYERS MAKES CASE FOR FUEL-FRUGAL ACTROS

P

orts haulier Myers Transport is running its first new Mercedes-Benz trucks in nearly 40 years. According to the operator, the trucks are already proving efficient with fuel – with the firm’s new Actros 2545 BigSpace ‘seed’ unit leading the charge. The Aylesford, Kent-based operator purchased the truck in November after a six-month trial. “That truck has performed marvellously,” said MD, Tony Myers. “In fact, at 9.14 mpg it’s set a new standard for economy.” Myers Transport said it was so impressed with its first Actros that it returned soon afterwards to dealer Rossetts Commercials with an order for two more – both with the same 449 bhp straight-six engine. This time, though, the firm chose range-topping GigaSpace cabs. One of the new trucks has just entered service with Myers, with the second due for delivery in January. The firm spec’d all its new Actros with

olvo Trucks has announced the names of the winning entries in the three age-related categories of the Truck of the Future 2050 Design Competition. They are Luo Tong Sim (Under 11 years), Barry Llewellyn (11 to 18 years) and Rhys Guy Llewellyn (Over 18 years). Runners up, who each received an honourable mention, were: George Goodfellow (11 to 18 years category) and Robert Hunt (Over 18 years). The winners and runners up were invited to join Volvo Trucks at the FTA Transport Manager Conference, which was held at The National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham on December 3.

Tony Myers said he is impressed with Actros’ fuel efficiency

The competition was open to any UK & Ireland resident, and Volvo said around 100 entries and enquiries were received – including international submissions. The truck-maker said the standard of all the entries was extremely high and the judges, who had such a difficult time of deciding the winners, were Volvo Trucks’ design director Rikard Orell, chief exterior designer Asok George, senior designer Ismail Ovacik and product manager John Comer. The three winners and two runners-up have been invited to Gothenburg to meet the Volvo Trucks design team in April.

Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC), which employs 3D GPS mapping to read three kilometres of topography ahead, then responds by controlling speed, braking and the transmission to maximise fuel efficiency. “I have admired the latest generation Actros since its launch at the 2012 Commercial Vehicle Show,” Myers said. “It’s a fantastic looking truck, with great presence on the road. Our customers like to see smart vehicles pulling their trailers and the Actros ticks this box perfectly. “The driver feedback has been very positive too,” he added. “That’s important, and explains why we always choose big, comfortable cabs.” Myers Transport runs its trucks for three years, after which time its latest tractors will each have covered some 450,000 km. “Mercedes-Benz residual values are always strong, so we’d expect to do reasonably well when we come to move them on,” Myers concluded.

Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. For a second and/or subsequent offence to multiply accordingly, for example, second offence in a commercial vehicle 2 x 21 days.

In response to queries from several drivers, this month I thought it would be useful to look at the driver’s hours and tachograph rules regarding when you need to record a journey travelling to pick up your wagon. broad positionNews is that in Article 9 -ofAccident the Regulation 11 - HinchcliffesThe Solicitors - Truckstop February 335 issue Spot Feature (EC) .indd 1 No 561/2006, there is a provision which appears to have caused some drivers issues because they appear to be unaware of its existence, or unsure as to how it applies to their duties and their obligations to record duty time. The article in question is Article No 9 (2) and 9 (3). Article 9(2) states that any time spent travelling to a location to take charge of a vehicle falling within scope of this regulation, or to return from that location, when the vehicle is neither at the driver’s home nor at the employer’s operational centre where the driver is normally based, shall not be counted as a rest or break unless the driver is on a ferry or train and has access to a bunk or couchette. Article 9(3) states any time spent by a driver driving a vehicle which falls outside of the scope of this Regulation to or from a vehicle which falls within the scope of this Regulation, which is not at the drivers home or at the driver’s operational centre where the driver is normally based shall count as other work. At the outset, it is worth clarifying what a few of these terms mean. A vehicle which falls “within scope of this Regulation” is a vehicle which requires a driver to use a tachograph and for that driver to be subject to the European Drivers Hours Regulations. A vehicle “which falls outside the scope of this Regulation” can be any vehicle whatsoever, providing it is not one the use of which is governed under the European Regulations of Drivers Hours and Tachographs. So such a vehicle may be a private car.

One of the offences some drivers have committed is using a mobile phone while driving. The legislation defines this offence as follows: No person is to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using a handheld mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.

following: sending or receiving oral or written messages; sending or receiving facsimile documents; sending or receiving still or moving images; and providing access to the internet. If you’re caught using a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving, you can expect to get an automatic fixed penalty notice. This means you’ll get three penalty points on your driving licence and have to pay a fine of £60. However, your case may go to court. If it does, you may also face disqualification from driving on top of a maximum fine of £1000. If you were driving a PCV or heavy goods vehicle, you could face a maximum fine of £2500. Also if the matter were considered of a serious nature you could face prosecution for other road transport related offences, which carry more serious sentences.

So, in essence, what this Regulation is stating is that a driver journey was undertaken in a private car, or if the driver was a who is travelling to a specific place, other than the employer’s passenger in an “out of scope” vehicle. from prosecution are few based, and which operating centreExemptions where the driver is normally Other situations whereby the time spent travelling can be person does not contravene any of these provisions if, at the is not the driver’stimeAhome and where the driver is supposed to take regarded as rest or break are identified in the guidance notes. NEW DART CHARGE SYSTEM IS GO

ore than 100,000 vehicles have been registered for a Dart Charge account, the Highways Agency has revealed. The HA said that since account registrations went live on November 5, up to 2200 people every hour have visited the Dart Charge website to sign up for a prepay account, which saves up to a third on each crossing. To help ease congestion at the Dartford Crossing, drivers no longer stop at a barrier to pay the Crossing charge. Instead, they have to pay the Dart Charge online, by phone or post or at certain retailers across the country. “For most people using the Dartford Crossing, a prepay account will be the cheapest and most convenient way to pay the crossing charge,” said Highways Agency project director, Nigel Gray. “I’m really encouraged by the take up so far, but urge all drivers who use the Crossing to sign up for an account and benefit from the discount it offers.”

The Agency said haulage firms have been among the first to sign up. A total of 1157 business fleets have already been migrated to Dart Charge, HA said, and it was working with the 100 largest fleet operators – between them covering more than 20,000 vehicles – to help them prepare for the changes. Foreign drivers have been setting up accounts too, with three per cent of overall accounts – around the same proportion of foreign vehicles that use the crossing each day. Registrations from 52 different countries have been received so far. HA said all existing DART-Tag customers should now have been contacted with details of how to migrate their account. Any who have not yet been contacted should call the Dart Charge team. Work to remove the payment booths and introduce a new road layout began on November 28 and will be completed in spring 2015. HA said all road works are being planned to minimise disruption.

amily-owned operator Solstor UK has added a new Mercedes-Benz Actros 2545 BigSpace tractor unit to its fleet – complete with striking livery highlighting its support of breast cancer charity, the Pink Ribbon Foundation. The idea for the head-turning truck was first planted when driver Julie Church jokingly asked if she could have a pink polo shirt as part of her uniform. “Why don’t we get you a pink truck as well?” came the response from her boss. He wasn’t serious at the time – but six months later, that’s exactly what they’ve done. Part of the AG Thames Holdings Group, Solstor UK has a head office and central consolidation hub at Crayford, Kent, close to the Dartford Crossing. Its core business entails the provision of Europe-wide temperature-controlled distribution services to the food industry. Supplied by dealer Sparshatts of Kent, the Actros is Solstor’s first Euro 6 truck and is based at its depot in Yaxley, Peterborough, where Julie and her fellow driver Lyndsey Shreeve-Peacock both work. Dubbed The Pink Lady, the new arrival has joined a fleet that includes 19 Euro 5

Actros, which entered service in late 2013. “Julie’s request to our group fleet manager sowed the seeds of an idea, so we contacted the Pink Ribbon Foundation to offer our support,” said the company’s UK business director, Andy Hitchings. “As a result, we’ve signed an exclusive 12-month contract with the charity, and our strikingly liveried new tractor and trailer combination is now raising awareness for this very deserving cause as it travels around the country.” The truck will be seen by millions of people as it clocks-up more than 100,000 miles over the next 12 months, delivering fresh and frozen food products to supermarkets nationwide. Solstor will also be presenting the Actros at Truckfests and other events, and has already netted more than £12,000 for the Pink Ribbon Foundation through the sale to suppliers of advertising space on the trailer and a series of fund-raising events by staff. Solstor said it wants to hear from those who see its pink Actros on the road, and is asking for stories and pictures of the truck to be emailed to truckphotos@solstor.com. Some of the more unusual and amusing contributions will then be published on the Solstor & The Pink Lady Facebook page.

SPEAK BACK

What’s your view?

MEDICAL APPEAL?

I am writing to you with regard to my story of the DVLA medical board. I’m sure I’m not alone in my opinion that the board is a farce. In May this year, I was unfortunate to have a fall and suffer some serious head injuries – the worst of these being three internal bleeds on the brain. Obviously these were worrying times and I am fully aware of how very lucky I am to be here today with no long-term affects. Because of the injuries, the DVLA revoked my licences until such time as I could medically prove I was fit to drive again. I had no problem as this was clearly the correct thing to do, so I sat and waited. Fortunately, on August 27, I went for another CT scan at Queens Hospital, Romford, and after the scan had an appointment with my neuro consultant who gave me the fantastic news that the internal bleeds had all gone and, in his opinion, I was fit to return to driving. He would confirm this with the DVLA medical board when they wrote to him about my case – as I now know, the DVLA takes quite a while to write any letter, unless I guess of course it involves a fine). I was obviously delighted at the news, as all I wanted to do was return to the job which provides my income, and after 20 years of truck driving I still love my job. In the meantime, I started to look for work. It was a quiet time, so I was just putting out some feelers: during my time off sick, I was trying to survive on £72 per week Employment Support Allowance. I received no help whatsoever from my local council with rent and council tax benefits, despite having paid full tax and national insurance for 26 years since leaving school. I found work at my first attempt with a company doing event/conference type trucking; they wanted me to start asap. I phoned the DVLA medical board and explained my situation to the gentleman on the phone. He looked at their records for me and informed me that it showed my licences were NOT revoked and,

The Smell of Diesel Author: David John Whitfield Publisher: David John Whitfield ASIN: B00MWADHVU Price: £4.02 (ebook) This self-published book sets out the story of driver David Whitfield’s working life in road transport, which kicked off when he left school at the age of 15 in 1961 and began work as a driver’s mate on a local farm. The biography follows David as he switched jobs to become a

provided I had the all-clear from my neuro consultant, the DVLA would not have a problem with me returning to driving. So, this is what I did on September 11. I was really enjoying finally being back behind the wheel. I am a proud man who likes to pay his way in life and provide for his family, so to earn a full time wage again made me happy. The company are a great bunch and I was really enjoying the job, this was until I returned from a 10-day job in Munich on September 27. While away, I had received a letter from the DVLA med board, dated September 19, informing me that they disagree with my neuro consultant (an expert in his field) because due to the nature of the injuries I had, I was a seizure risk. I was gobsmacked; I have never had a seizure in my life, not before, during or after my fall. I have consulted with my GP, who is of the opinion I am no seizure risk, and if it were indeed to happen it would certainly have been directly after receiving my initial head injuries. So, I have my GP and a fully qualified neuro consultant who both feel I am no risk, and should be able to return to driving/work. However, the DVLA’s medical board (whoever they are) refuse to budge and are saying I have to wait six months from the date of the injuries to reapply for my car licence, and 12 for my LGV unless I can prove, with additional medical evidence, that there is a change in my circumstances. At no time during my hospital stay in Belfast, or since, was I or have I ever been on any form of seizure medication. In fact, the only medication I have ever been on since the injuries is co-codamol, a strong headache tablet. As I’m sure you can imagine, I am furious at the DVLA’s decision and their reasoning; I think it’s a disgrace and in nearly all my dealings with the DVLA, they have proved to be just another faceless government agency. At no time has the DVLA, despite making a decision which has a massive impact on my life, asked to see me in any way shunter at Preston Docks for Ulster Ferry Transport, and onto work as a truck driver for local firm Northern Ireland Trailers. David then undertook longdistance work in the ’70s, and was employed by WH Malcolm at its yard in Preston. The book is a highly personal account of life in the industry, and vividly recounts what life was like for drivers of British trucks back in the day, with classic marques including Bedford, Austin, Scammell making an appearance along the way. A good, absorbing read.

shape or form for any kind of medical examination so that I may prove I am fit to drive; they just don’t care. They have their procedures which are set in stone by the Secretary of State’s expert panel, and yet I am unaware still of the actual “individual” who made the final ruling on my case. This mysterious medical board at the DVLA is exceptionally hard to contact. I did phone in the first instance after receiving the letter about the decision; the letter was from a Mr S Thomas, so this is who I asked to speak to. I was told Mr Thomas is the head of the DVLA medical board, but nobody is allowed to speak to him. This type of attitude just infuriates me even more. The DVLA has no concept of the stress its decision has on my life. It is making me ill with worry and financially they are crippling me; I would like to see any one of the people at the DVLA who are affecting my right to live and work survive on £72 a week. The letter from the mysterious Mr Thomas states that, should I disagree with the decision, I can appeal. I’d like to, but if they have already overruled my neuro consultant, what is the point? I have been told the DVLA’s decision is FINAL. Apparently, I could appeal via my local magistrates’ court. I have looked into this, but surprisingly this costs money and is not cheap, so at £72 per week current income I’m already doomed and apparently it will take longer than waiting for the year to be up. There is no guarantee I would win the case anyway. I also contacted my MP as I’m not prepared to roll over and play dead. He showed an interest and wrote to the DVLA himself, but was rather easily brushed off with a reply from the DVLA because, in my MP’s words, the DVLA’s decision is final and there is nothing he can do. I want, and have the right to have, my voice heard and would like to try and achieve something not just for my benefit, but for so many others who I have discovered (from internet forums) have been, or still are involved in similar battles with the DVLA medical board.

JOB HUNTING I read with interest your ‘Driver Shortage hits UK’ new story on in the December issue of Truckstop News. I keep hearing this on TV as well, but it obviously hasn’t hit Cornwall yet. Just try getting a job driving a truck in Cornwall – once you drive over the bridge at Plymouth and below, I don’t think I’ve seen an LGV driving job advertised down here for years. I’ve sent endless letters and CVs

to haulage companies, typically with no replies – even from the wellknown firms. Am I skilled? Yes. I’m 52, hold C+E and Cat D coach licences, I’m a skilled mechanic (yes, there are mechanic jobs), but I prefer driving. I think the authors of these reports need to travel around the country a bit and stop basing their findings on big cities! Stephen Haywood By email

We live in modern times, but the DVLA seems to deal with everything with very old fashioned methods; you can only enter into correspondence with them by letter. A phone call is a waste of time as you are not “allowed” to speak to the higher powers and they don’t seem to have cottoned on to emails. They drag everything out by taking at least two to three weeks to reply to any letter you may send them. They revoke your licence, you look into it and write a letter, they reply and it takes four weeks. What a farce. You have the government saying it doesn’t want people to have to rely on “benefit Britain”, yet one of their departments is quite happy to make a decision which puts you there. You couldn’t make it up. I would be interested if you have any thoughts on my situation, or have any advice on any other avenues I should explore. I already know the DVLA, the state and my MP are a waste of time, so where do I go next? Could there be a case for the European Court to get involved? Would the media be interested in some way, and if so who? I’m running out of ideas, but want to try everything in my power to achieve some form of justice for everyone in this position. Name and address supplied

Thanks for your letter. We referred it to our legal expert, David Glover, who replies: “I can genuinely appreciate your frustration. It is clear from your letter that you accept the role of the Driver’s Medical Group at DVLA in making sure drivers are medically fit, but feel that in your case they may have misjudged the situation. It is not possible to provide specific advice in this column, but I can say that I have dealt with many enquiries and queries relating to DVLA and in particular, medical issues. There is a format for decisions to be reviewed, and I would urge you to consider this route as it can often provide a resolution without the need to go through an Appeal. “Looking at the Appeal process, if you choose to adopt this procedure you should be aware the time limits can vary depending upon in which part of the UK you live. This was probably explained to you in your letter. “I know only too well how frustrating it can appear when trying to challenge a decision, but it certainly is possible to raise a successful challenge. It all depends on the individual case. I would urge you to seek some specific advice on your case, with a view to deciding on the best options available.”

TOUGH TRAKKER CUTS IT FOR TUTEX

A

UK company has selected an Iveco Trakker Hi-Land 6x4 rigid as the launch platform for its new Vac-Con X-Cavator – a powerful vacuum and high-pressure water system which allows companies to locate and excavate around valuable utilities without damaging them. Tutex, which is based in Gloucestershire and holds the exclusive rights to distribute Vac-Con products in Europe, selected the Trakker (AD260T33) chassis to be its European demonstrator on the back of service delivered by local dealer Aquila Truck Centres. “Aquila and Iveco showed a passion for the project which wasn’t necessarily shared by other truck dealerships we made enquiries with,” said Tutex sales manager, Jack Page. “It was clear from the start that they had our best interests at heart and the Trakker represents the perfect on/off road chassis for the terrain we’ll need to tackle.”

The Trakker chassis afforded bodybuilding flexibility for the Vac-Con X-Cavator system, which is manufactured in North America and designed for companies seeking to move large quantities of earth in a short amount of time. The vehicle featured at the industry event No Dig Live, where Tutex showcased the versatility of the powerful vacuum and high-pressure water system which is being targeted at sectors ranging from water boards and utility contractors to telecommunications firms and specialist plant hire operators. The Trakker is powered by Iveco’s HI-SCR Euro 6 Cursor 9 engine, which produces up to 330 bhp between 1600-2200 rpm and 1400 Nm of torque between 950-1650 rpm. Tutex said it was now taking orders for new Vac-Con units. The first truck will continue to be used as a demonstration vehicle at industry events and will also be available to be hired from Tutex for general contract work.

FORGET BLACK ICE – WINTER DRIVERS FEAR INEXPERIENCED MOTORISTS

otorists have revealed their biggest fear when driving in harsh winter conditions – and it’s not hazardous weather, black ice, getting stuck in snow or being stranded, as you may expect. Instead, the thing motorists fear the most during bleak weather is the actions of new drivers, according to a study from Halfords Autocentres. The survey by Britain’s independent garage chain found that almost a third of motorists (29.2 per cent) rank inexperienced drivers as the most worrying hazard when driving in winter. This was followed closely by skidding on surface water or ice (28 per cent) and driving in fog (27 per cent). The ability of new drivers to deal with adverse weather conditions is such a concern that 85

per cent of those surveyed think winter driving techniques should be part of the practical exam for learner drivers. A total of 67 per cent said aquaplaning on surface water and skidding on ice posed the biggest threat to new drivers who have no experience of dealing with such situations. Halfords said it found the behaviour of other road users plays a big part in how confident motorists feel about driving in poor weather. Sixty-four per cent said people take more risks driving during winter, and 38 per cent said inconsiderate and aggressive driving actually increases at this time of year which can be extremely intimidating for new drivers. “Driving in heavy rain, snow and ice can be daunting, especially for those with no experience of driving in such conditions,” said Halfords Autocentres’ Stefan Warhaftig. “And it’s not just new drivers that this affects; last year’s mild winter means even people who passed their test in the last couple of years may not have experienced driving in severe weather conditions before. “But even the most experienced drivers fear winter motoring, with 48 per cent of people surveyed saying they are anxious or genuinely frightened about driving in the winter, and 17 per cent said they reduce the Survey found that during winter, most motorists amount of driving they do or even stop feared new drivers more than skidding on ice completely.”

Details were scarce when we went to press ahead of the official launch on September 5, but the Swedish manufacturer told Truckstop News the new FHs will be available in both Euro 5 and 6 form, and pack a vast amount of upgrades and improvements. Leading the charge for fuel efficiency is Volvoʼs new I-See function (Truckstop News, issue 301). The system, which works alongside the I-Shift automated transmission, is claimed to cut consumption by five per cent by storing information about the route the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure progress is as economical as possible,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Truck Corporation. An additional five per cent saving in fuel use is possible with Volvo Trucksʼ new Fuel Package. This package encompasses training and monthly assistance – Fuel Advice – and its aim is to cut fuel costs by changing driving styles and increasing knowledge of how to drive for maximum fuel-efficiency. Volvoʼs new I-Torque Euro 6 driveline – production of which for the European market will get under way in autumn 2013 – should make for additional fuel savings. “ITorque reduces fuel consumption by up to With its new Volvo FH series, Volvo is ʻpushing four the envelopeʼ in re-defining what a premium per cent. Together with I-See and other minor truck can offer. improvements, the result is fuel consumption can drop by up to 10 per cent. For the average truck, this can equate to a saving of up to 4100 litres of fuel a year,” Nilsson continued. On-road manners have received much attention, and Volvo is claiming the new trucks offer exceptional handling thatʼs much like a car. “To put things into perspective, we can even offer independent front suspension, although initially only on left-hand drive vehicles. This world-first takes handling to unsurpassed levels in the truck world,” Nilsson said.

Also of benefit to drivers are improved seats and driving position, optimised to provide a better view of the road. This is aided by an increase in the cabʼs usable window area and an innovative slimmer rear-view mirror design. Stalks and controls are arranged in priority so the most important ones are now closest to the driver, and the steering wheel now has a neck tilt function – another world-first in the truck world. Safety is high on the agenda, An all-new cab structure features more upright A-pillars, which give the cab an additional 1 m3 of interior space. This means an extra 300 litres (10.5 cu ft) of storage capacity, as well as greater comfort on board.“The cab is optimised both for work and leisure time,” Nilsson said. “A better bed, integrated parking cooler, new lighting and low noise levels among other features, all increase the chance of pleasant relaxation and a good nightʼs sleep, which in turn means drivers are less tired and more alert.” Production of the Volvo FH will start in spring 2013 for the European market.

PAPER TACHO ANALYSIS ON THE UP

T

achograph analysis provider Novadata is reporting an increase in demand for its analogue tachograph services due to a tightening of the enforcement on driver’s hours legislation. The firm said that many fleets are still running a mix of vehicles with different tachograph equipment installed – with some running digital tachographs, while others are fitted with analogue devices. Novadata chairman Derek Broomfield said in cases such as these, it was essential for fleet managers to be able to combine the data from both in order to produce regular, up-to-date driver’s hours reports. “We can provide a digitalised version of the analogue tachograph data so it can be combined with that from digital tachographs,” Broomfield said. “This

means we can provide companies with a single set of data using the analysis of both analogue and digital tachograph records, which allows them to make the required driver’s hours and Working Time Directive calculations for each driver, even if the individual driver uses both types of tachograph as they change vehicles.” Understanding driver’s hours and knowing how to operate the vehicle’s tachograph are both vital for legal compliance, and Novadata is running courses on the subjects for both drivers and managers to ensure transport operators can fulfil their legal obligations and protect their O-licences. The course also counts towards Driver CPC as part of the required 35 hours of Periodic Training.

WATCHDOG ATTACKS ROYAL MAIL AS POST RIVALS RAMP UP TOP MARKS FOR ND TRAINING

N

U

K postal operator Royal Mail has been slammed by communications watchdog Ofcom after the firm posted its annual reports in December. Ofcom told Royal Mail it was falling behind services offered by rival European parcels delivery companies and had not made improvements to productivity over last year’s operational statistics. It had also failed to hit its targets for 2014. The operator’s shares fell over eight per cent in November after it issued a warning that other companies – including online retail giant Amazon – were encroaching into the package delivery industry. However, Royal Mail later announced a new deal which will see it it partnering with Amazon to enable customers to collect parcels directly from Post Offices via the postal firm’s Local Collect service.

Royal Mail announced a small reduction in pre-tax profits for the six months leading up to September 28, which this year totalled £218m – a fall of £15m compared with the same period last year. It said competition in the market was threatening its delivery commitments, and cited delivery firm Whistl (formerly TNT Post) as chief among its rivals – and said the rebranded company could wipe £200m off its sales. But others in the industry stated there was room for competition in the sector. Jon Taylor, joint CEO of Transline Logistics, said one organisation holding a monopoly limits the choice available to users of the service. “Online retailing has grown exponentially over the last decade and as a result, delivery expectations are constantly

evolving,” Taylor said. “E-commerce has changed the face of how and when people expect to receive parcels and in a growing market place, the door for competition opens. “It was only a matter of time before challengers to Royal Mail saw a gap to launch their own cost-effective delivery services and capitalise on the need for more options. “We operate in a world where disruption is applauded and encouraged. You only have to look at the technology and finance sectors to see that competition – especially from smaller players – is invigorating, not stifling. “Traditional institutions are having to up their game, which is no bad thing and it’s great to see our industry open up in the same way,” he concluded.

orbert Dentressangle has become the first third-party logistics provider to be accredited with the Skills for Logistics (SfL) Standard of Excellence, recently introduced to recognise the quality of a company’s Driver CPC training (Truckstop News, December). SfL conducted an audit of ND’s training procedures, lesson plans, record keeping and current training materials. An SfL representative also attended an ‘Application of the Regulations’ course delivered to 12 colleagues at the operator’s site in Andover, covering the fundamental laws governing the logistics industry, including EU driver’s hours regulations and digital tachograph recording. “It was an obvious decision for us to apply for this status,” said Eddie Simcox, national operations training manager for Norbert Dentressangle Logistics UK Ltd. “The whole concept matches our company values and, with our continuous improvement approach, gaining truly independent feedback is priceless. “The scheme is still in its infancy, but if it’s embraced by the industry, it will drive up standards.”

ye, Suffolk-based Anglia Freight Ltd has chosen six Renault Range D 18-tonners on a five-year contract hire from BRS Ltd as its latest fleet additions. The four additional and two replacement vehicles will join Anglia Freight’s 35-strong fleet in July, servicing their network territory in East Anglia as well as further afield in the UK, covering a range of groupage loads. A full contract hire package is being provided by BRS with maintenance of the vehicles through the local Renault Trucks

authorised network. “We have been running Renaults for a while and we have been hearing good things about the performance of the new Euro 6 vehicles, so we wanted to bring them on board,” said Douglas Shawcross, director of the privately owned family business. “BRS approached us at the perfect time as we were looking for some new vehicles. They were able to offer us the package we were looking for, as well as great value for money.”

talian truck manufacturer Iveco has supplied the Brazilian Air Force with 10 medium-range trucks spec’d to assist the armed forces with its ongoing missions to protect the Amazon rainforest. The truck-maker delivered the vehicles to the Brazilian Aeronautical Commission in Belem – the capital of Para state – in October, and the vehicles will be operated through the Airport Commission of the Amazon Region – Comara. The Commission’s tasks oversee the design, construction and equipping of airports. Among the activities taking place at these airports are the ongoing military and civilian missions aimed at protecting the Amazon rainforest region.

The vehicles are from Iveco’s Tector Attack line – the company’s medium-range product offered in Latin America. Chosen for their versatility, the trucks will aid the Air Force in the execution of civil works assigned by Federal, State or Municipal government agencies. Iveco first began commercial and manufacturing activities in Brazil in 1997. It’s parent company, CNH Industrial, employs over 10,000 people in the country and operates facilities in Sete Lagoas, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Cuiaba, Nova Lima, Sorocaba and Piracicaba to provide light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles, engines, defence vehicles, agricultural machinery and construction equipment.

BUMPER YEAR FOR YEARDLEY’S NEW VENTURE BYC MD Kevin Hopper said the firm’s new events division is doing well

nternational transport and logistics operator Brian Yeardley Continental has reported record business levels which, it said, include up to 100 per cent growth in its new operation within the exhibitions and events logistics market. BYC said it expects to see a 10-15 per cent uplift in its traditional European

full-load and groupage business going forwards, and expects to double turnover in its European exhibition and events logistics division. Overall income has risen from circa £8m in 2010 to over £12m in 2014. The company has invested heavily in its fleet during 2014, including the recent addition

of 20 Mega curtainsiders and four Mega box vans from Krone Trailers. Also about to join Yeardley’s 43-strong truck fleet are two more left-hand drive Mercedes-Benz Actros Euro 6 480 bhp GigaSpace tractor units. Half of Brian Yeardley’s fleet are now Mercedes and DAF Euro 6-engined tractors.

DEBUT RENAULT FOR WASTE FIRM FLEET

ulk waste haulier G Webb Haulage Ltd has taken delivery of the first Renault to enter its fleet. The firm, which specialises in the haulage and disposal of all types of contaminated soils and waste in bulk, opted for a Range C 8x4 tipper with custom-built Aliweld body supplied by Renault dealer Sparks Commercial Services Ltd. The Range C will work alongside the Longstanton-based firm’s 42-strong Volvo, DAF and MAN fleet, and will be used to service the firm’s contract with Thames Water across West London and into the West Country. General manager, Mac McMurdo, said: “When researching new Euro 6 vehicles, and in particular

olvo has upped the payload of its FL specialist city distribution chassis by 200 kg by introducing its compact five-litre Euro 6 engine to 14- and 16-tonne variants. In addition, Volvo said its is now enabling operators to order its Dynafleet telematics system directly from the factory. “We want even more people to discover the capabilities of the Volvo FL,” said says John Comer, product manager for Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland. “The new combination with a lighter driveline and higher load capacity is particularly suitable for those who have high demands on productivity and are looking for a cost-effective transport solution.”

Volvo’s four-cylinder, five-litre Euro 6 engine is now available in 240 bhp and 210 bhp variants. Both engines will be offered to a wider group of Volvo FL customers, including 14- and 16-tonnes. As the engine and gearbox together weigh 200 kg less than the traditional six-cylinder Euro 6 option, this creates the opportunity of a corresponding additional payload. “The five-litre engine may be a suitable option for those who would not normally use the maximum gross combination weight, but at the same time value the flexibility of being able to drive with heavier loads if required,” Comer added.

“As we move into our 40th year, we continue to look for new markets and fresh opportunities – a policy which has underpinned our growth record over recent years and one which will see us go from strength to strength, here in the UK and in markets overseas,” said BYC’s managing director, Kevin Hopper.

the chassis, the Renault Range C was especially light. In our business, we are extremely weight conscious; so if we guarantee our customers a 20-tonne payload, that is what we deliver. The new Range C combined with the Aliweld body provided the perfect solution for our particular needs.” McMurdo added initial fuel consumption figures were good, with the Range C already returning an average of 9 mpg. “Our drivers are also really happy – they like the ride and the big cab, which is great as they are often out all week,” he added.

urkish heavy-haulage specialist Botros-Yigit-Nata (BYN) has moved a 247-tonne refinery boiler with a length of almost 62 m and a diameter of 3.5 m from the port in Iskenderun to a refinery in the oil-rich city of Erbil (Iraq). The firm employed a combination of two Goldhofer 10-axle THP/SL heavyduty modules to complete the task. The refinery boiler had a load height of 5.25 m and was first shipped from Jebel Ali (United Emirates) to the Turkish port of Iskenderun. From there, BYN’s specialists took the huge load by road over a distance of 1150 km to its final destination in Erbil – marking the first time a load of

this size had ever been transported to Iraq via Turkey in a single operation. The journey from Iskenderun to Erbil lasted a total of 20 days. “Everything went smoothly,” said BYN general manager, Aydin Fatah. “We spent six months planning the project and performing a detailed inspection of the roads down to the very last bend.” BYN’s Goldhofer axle lines have a gross combination length of almost 70 m and a suspension stroke of ± 300 mm, with a high bending moment – which the firm said makes them ideal for transporting long loads in off-road conditions.
