WASTECYCLE’S 8X2 AROCS IS BRITISH FIRST E ast Midlands resource management and recycling specialist Wastecycle has put to work one of the UK’s first 8x2 Mercedes-Benz Arocs. The 32-tonne Arocs 3236L hook-loader is based at the operator’s Nottingham recovery facility, and arrived via the local branch of Mertrux. The truck has a lifting and steering airsuspended rear axle, while its 10.7-litre straight-six engine produces 360 bhp and drives through a standard PowerShift 3 automated transmission. The 8x2 model is a recent addition to the Arocs range and is claimed to be significantly more fuel-efficient than a traditional 8x4 set-up – Wastecycle is hoping for an improvement of approximately half a mile per gallon which, at current prices, would equate to around £27,000 over five years. The fact that the rear axle can be lifted when the vehicle is running light also enables the operator to save on tyre wear.

“We don’t run to landfill so we don’t need double-drive,” said Wastecycle transport manager, Andy Sharp. “Instead, we wanted a vehicle that was agile and economical to operate, and that meant an 8x2. “The truck has been well received by the drivers – access to some of our sites is quite tight, so the rear-steer axle is proving very useful,” he concluded. Wastecycle’s eight-wheeler is fitted with Multilift XR 24S.55 hook-loading equipment with multicover sheeting system, and works with bins with capacities of up to 50 cubic yards. In line with the company’s aim of achieving the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme Silver and Gold standards (it currently holds FORS Bronze accreditation), the vehicle is equipped with a comprehensive armoury of safety systems to protect cyclists and other road-users, including forward- and rear-facing cameras, and proximity sensors. Wastecycle runs a fleet of over 40 trucks which range from 7.5-tonne skip-loaders to 44-tonne tractor units, and six trailers.

NEW POLLUTION: GOV RAPPED OVER AIR QUALITY

T

he European Supreme Court has issued a ruling that the UK government must submit new air quality plans to the European Commission by no later than December 31, 2015 following its failure to comply with EU law setting limits for nitrogen dioxide (NO²) pollution in various areas across the country, including Greater London. The timing of the ruling also coincides with the findings of a new study published by the World Health Organisation, which estimated the UK suffers around £54 billion of economic costs each year associated with air pollution. The WHO said this accounts for 3.7 per cent of GDP in Britain, where 29,000 people are estimated to die prematurely each year from air pollution. The Supreme Court ruling was welcomed by liquefied natural gas supplier Gasrec. “Hopefully this will be a wake-up call for the government and wider transport industry – which is responsible for the bulk of NO² emissions – that the development and adoption of natural gas fuelled vehicles should be greatly speeded up,” said Gasrec’s chief

Camden took FHs after conducting in-depth trials

U

K and Ireland PVCu products manufacturer and supplier Camden Group has taken delivery of a number of Volvo FH 4x2 trucks from Northern Ireland Volvo dealer, Dennison Commercials. “Volvo is the perfect fit for us,” said the firm’s transport manager, Stephen Clements. “We had the FHs on trial, and during that time the performance of both the trucks and Dennisons was outstanding. From a reliability perspective, the trucks were excellent – we didn’t lose a single day’s productivity from reliability issues. “But the big bonus for us is the fuel efficiency coupled with a huge reduction in our CO² emissions,” he added. Last year, Camden delivered over 750,000 window and door units to trade customers the length and breadth of

Britain, from Inverness to Penzance. “This year, that figure will be over one million units,” Clements said. “With a five-day turnaround promise, fleet reliability is huge to us, and our customers put their confidence in us to deliver on time, every time. In Dennisons we have a partner who works closely with us to help us keep that promise. The level and quality of their aftersales service was a major factor in the decision to go with Volvo.” The new trucks are liveried in Camden’s green and black colours, which was designed to reflect the company’s commitment to sustainability. As well as the distinctive livery, the Euro 6 FH 460 4x2 XL Globetrotters are finished to a high specification, with lightbars fitted and the last five to be delivered also including ally wheels. All of the trucks also have airflow kits fitted.

executive officer, Rob Wood. “At present there are around 700 such heavy goods vehicles operating daily on UK roads; this number could be exponentially increased with the right incentives and desire to improve UK wide air quality. “We already know HGVs represent around two per cent of road vehicles but produce a disproportionate 20 per cent of road transport CO²; they also deliver high levels of NO² and particulates pollution,” Wood added. “But when using a natural gas fuel, which can also be enhanced with biomethane derived from waste products, HGVs can deliver CO² savings of up to 70 per cent. They can also substantially reduce NO² emissions and virtually eliminate particulates.” Wood said Gasrec was urging the UK government to follow the lead of other European cities like Paris, which has a plan to remove most diesel vehicles by 2020. “This approach also makes commercial sense, as running on gas is less costly than diesel even after capital costs are factored in,” he concluded.

MAN BOSS PLEDGES TO GET BRAND BACK ON TRACK

DRIVERS WARNED OVER RISKY OVERTAKING R oad safety charity Brake and Direct Line insurance are urging motorists to “hang back, slow down and chill out” on country roads to avoid accidents, in light of a new survey that has revealed one in seven drivers (14 per cent) have been forced by another driver’s overtaking to swerve, pull over or brake to avoid a collision in the past year. Over the last 12 months, Brake and Direct Line’s survey also found four in five drivers (80 per cent) have felt endangered by an overtaking manoeuvre, either of their own, their driver, or another vehicle; Almost all drivers (94 per cent) have witnessed a risky overtaking manoeuvre, and more than half (53 per cent) see them monthly or more often. It also found one in five drivers (18 per cent) admit they have themselves overtaken another vehicle when they were not certain if there were any hidden vehicles or hazards they could have hit during the manoeuvre. When it comes to owning up to risky overtaking, it was most common among male and young drivers, with 21 per cent of men and two in five (39 per cent) 17-24 year olds admitting doing so when they weren’t sure the road ahead was clear. The survey found the figures for speeding painted a similar picture, with almost half of male drivers (44 per cent) and more than half of young drivers (17-24; 56 per cent) doing

over 60 mph on single carriageway country roads, compared with less than a third (31 per cent) of women and two in five drivers (37 per cent) overall. “Overtaking on single-carriageway country roads is a huge risk, and one that ultimately just isn’t worth it,” said Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive, Brake. “Why risk it and rush? You could cause a devastating, high speed, head-on crash that ends lives and ruins others. In spite of this, a significant minority are still taking the risk and performing this aggressive and selfish manoeuvre. “We’re urging all drivers to avoid overtaking on country roads unless absolutely essential and 100 per cent safe – that doesn’t include if you’re feeling impatient because someone in front is driving a few mph slower than you want to. In those situations, cool-headed and responsible drivers hang back and relax. We’re also urging drivers to stay well within speed limits, and slow right down for villages, bends, brows and bad weather, to protect themselves and others.” Rob Miles, director of motor at Direct Line, added: “People die on rural roads in the UK every day and many of these fatal crashes could be prevented. Our own data suggests young drivers and their passengers are even more likely to be killed on this type of road. Drivers should remember patience is a virtue when it comes to deciding to overtake another vehicle, as it could be a life saver.”

UK MAN boss Simon Elliott is working hard to get the marque on more British fleets

M

AN’s UK managing director, Simon Elliott, has told Truckstop News the German truck manufacturer has renewed efforts to achieve a “podium position” in the UK truck market after suffering a string of setbacks in recent months. Elliott, who took over after previous CEO Des Evans stepped down in July 2014 due to ill health, said he was faced with a “baptism of fire” when he took on his new role at the company last year as “there were lots of issues and not a lot of solutions”. Elliott was speaking at a recent press conference held at Bath Rugby Club’s training ground, which also coincided with his 200th day as MAN’s UK MD. He said after his first 100 days in the job, he had determined the company was suffering from a lack of strategy, a declining vehicle parc, declining market share and EGR issues with its Euro 5 D26 engines. In addition, he said dealer and staff morale was low and the marque had 1200 used vehicles in stock which it was having trouble shifting. However, Elliott said he was working hard to turn the brand’s fortune around and had now implemented a new strategy to propel MAN into the top three best-selling truck marques in the UK market. “We will

no longer look backwards at MAN,” he affirmed. The sentiment was echoed by MAN’s newly appointed sales director, Ian Mitchell, who joined the company in October after working as Volvo Group UK’s commercial truck director. “The brand is not realising its potential,” Mitchell told the press. “It’s not pulling it’s weight.” He said the company’s Euro 6 offering was strong and deserved to be on more British fleets. “Fuel economy of MAN Euro 6 engines are best in class,” he added. In April, MAN wrote to all operators with D26 Euro 5 EGR trucks on their fleets asking for vehicles to be booked into its workshops for a maintenance check. It said the check was “a purely precautionary measure” following a highpressure intercooler issue highlighted with some of its D26 engines in 2014. The manufacturer confirmed all affected engines would be either repaired or replaced at no cost to the customer. “While we have no reason to believe any of these vehicles are affected by an EGR cooler or high-pressure intercooler issue, our decision to ask all Euro 5 EGR owners to book their vehicles into our workshops demonstrates our commitment to minimising potential business downtime,” said an MAN spokesperson.

Letter MOVE OVER & SLOW DOWN While surfing the net looking at trucking websites, I noticed that some parts of Canada have a ‘move over and slow down’ law. If you come across something on the hard shoulder and don’t slow down and move over a lane, the driver could be booked. The other night, I witnessed a so-called professional driver who should’ve been the subject of a law like that. I was northbound heading back to bonnie Scotland when up ahead

CAFE RECOLLECTIONS

In a recent article, you mentioned the Watling Street Transport Cafe and asked about the Crow’s Nest Cafe on Watling Street in Hertfordshire. As a child, in the late ’50s early ’60s, I lived on the Old Watling Street – the old Roman Road, not Telford’s new road – just above it, and so frequently walked down across a field and into the parking area of the Crow’s Nest Cafe in order to catch a bus to St Albans or Dunstable, or to cross the main road and play in the River Ver opposite. I can say that the Crow’s Nest was named after nests in three gigantic

in the distance I could see a couple of sets of blue lights on the hard shoulder. There was another truck in front of me, and as we got nearer the incident, I moved out to lane two as usual. I expected the truck ahead of me to do the same, but he just kept going. As we got nearer what turned out to be an accident, I could see a cop standing at the side, waiting for a break in the traffic so he could clear some debris off the road. In the dark, all I could make out

for sure was a piece of red clothing lying on the road. My hero just kept the pedal to the metal and ran over whatever was there. When he passed over it, he must’ve taken the red thing with him, snagged under his truck, because it disappeared – just like him – into the night. So maybe it’s time we had the move-over law, then the cop at the side of the road could’ve got that idiot’s number and booked him. Colin Black By email

elm trees that grew across the road (they sadly caught Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s). The Crow’s Nest was significantly smaller (a couple of shacks, really) than either the Watling Street Cafe at Friars’s Wash or the Three Sisters Cafe (only one field closer to Markyate). Also, I can recall that the building was on two levels, I think, and catered for both cars and trucks – with each implicitly ‘finding their own level’! Friendly people ran it – nice to kids – but the sewage from the cafe went in a pipe under the road and straight into the Ver (probably still does, although the cafe is now a Little Chef). It also had terrible visibility for

There’s adrenaline-fuelled car-based action across six ridiculous, yet infectiously entertaining movies in this new Blu-ray boxset. The stories are preposterous, but that’s not the point - it’s all about the cars, stunts and action, and when judged on those terms, these films are ahead of the game. Each film is presented on its own disc, and they look better than ever in HD.

This DVD rerelease from the Duke Archive is billed as the ultimate souvenir of the best race series in Western Europe for juggernauts of the race track. Rating: 

Mumford & Sons’ third studio album treads similar ground to the band’s previous releases, although to our ears there are fewer stand-out tracks this time around. The sound is perhaps a little smoother and ‘produced’, too, which unseats their more acoustic and raw roots. Still, it’s a decent album that’s easy enough to listen to.

HELP FOR HEROES CONVOY

I would just like to say thank you for helping to support the recent Help for Heroes Truck Convoy, which met at M1 Junction 9 Truck Stop on May 9. I thought you might like some photos from the convoy and the truck show. It was a truly fantastic day, despite the weather! We had great turnout of trucks and motorbikes and attracted a lot of people, who came down to see the trucks and special guests The Stig, Hero Bear and Dunstable Town Mayor. The total raised from the day was £3254.50, which is fantastic. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the truck companies, drivers and motorbikes, as without them this wouldn’t have been possible. Also, a big thank you to Bedfordshire Police, Dunstable Town Mayor and everyone that helped and supported this event. Look out for details for next year’s event which we hope will be bigger and better!!! Graham Munt By email

The Road Haulage Industry Author: Chris Woodcock Publisher: Shire Publications Web: www.amazon. co.uk ISBN: 9780747807735 Price: £7.95 (Amazon) Don’t be fooled by the title. Rather than a literary history of road haulage, this book is a more personal tale that touches on the timeline from horse BOOK and carts right up to modern vehicles. This is by no means a dry account, as author Chris Woodcock writes a very engaging and easy-to-read tale packed full of anecdotes about life on the road as a truck driver that have been plucked from his own experiences. Alongside some decent photography, this short book looks at what life was like for truckers ‘back in the day’ – tramping, truckstop stay-overs, roping and sheeting, it’s all here and is brought to vivid life by the author’s easy-going Rating:  style.

The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The holder will have to apply for the vocational entitlement and may be called to a vocational driver conduct hearing in front of the traffic commissioner. The statutory document produced by the senior traffic commissioner indicates what factors are taken into consideration: Drink/drive disqualifications (within the previous 10 years) ● First disqualification: for 12 months or less. Grant with a “requirements warning letter” will be sent. ● First disqualification for more than 12 months but less than three years. Further period of disqualification on a sliding scale of one month per year of disqualification to be imposed. - Second and/or subsequent disqualifications: All multiple disqualifications must be referred to a traffic commissioner. Disqualify for 3-6 months, or more in extreme cases.

VOLVO UPGRADES FMX WITH AUTO TRACTION CONTROL

V

olvo Trucks is now offering automatic engagement of all-wheel drive on its construction trucks in a move it said was a world-first among truck manufacturers. The firm’s engineers said the Automatic Traction Control function activates the front-wheel drive when the rear wheels lose traction on slippery or soft ground. “Many drivers connect front-wheel drive or differential lock in good time before a difficult section of terrain, in order to avoid getting stuck,” said Jonas Odermalm, construction segment manager at Volvo Trucks. “Volvo Automatic Traction Control engages the front-wheel drive when in motion, and only for the short time it is really needed.” Automatic Traction Control, which Volvo is now fitting as standard in its FMX with driven front axle, is already used in the manufacturer’s articulated hauler construction equipment. The system uses software connected to wheel speed sensors which detect and control wheel drive. When a rear wheel starts to slip, the power moves automatically to the front wheels without the truck losing torque or speed. A dog clutch activates the front-wheel

drive in half a second, and Volvo said the clutch is lighter and has fewer moving parts than a traditional solution with permanent all-wheel drive. If the driver encounters particularly rough ground, then it is possible to manually lock the other differentials at both front and rear. The drive on the front axle prevents standstills on slippery surfaces. At the same time, the function is often only required for a very small part of the total driving time. The manufacturer said the system means drivers avoid extra fuel consumption and wear on the driveline and tyres that’s normally the result of constant engagement of front-wheel drive. “Automatic Traction Control is yet another example of how innovative technology can make things easier and smarter than before,” said Ricard Fritz, vice president, Volvo Trucks Brand. “Just like the I-Shift revolutionised the gearbox, we are confident this new development will do the same for the driven front axle.” Automatic Traction Control is standard on the Volvo FMX in versions 4x4, 6x6, as well as 8x6 and is offered with the complete engine program for Euro standards 3, 4, 5 and 6.

HIRE FIRM HAILS RANGE Ds FOR FLEET ADDITIONS

U

K vehicle rental firm Salford Van Hire has expanded and updated its fleet with 35 Renault Range T460 44-tonne 6x2 tractor units with sleeper cabs, and 20 Range D18 18-tonners with 27 ft GRP box bodies and tail lifts. A total of 17 further 12- and 18-tonne Range Ds are also on order. The trucks, which all carry Salford Van Hire’s livery as well as the company’s 50th Anniversary logo, began joining the 6300-strong mixed Renault, DAF, Mercedes and Iveco fleet at the end of 2014. The new Range T and Ds are being put to work across the UK by Salford Van Hire’s clients. The 12-tonne Range Ds are aimed at hirers who need extra weight

above 7.5 tonnes, while the 18-tonners are replacement vehicles for the Salford Van Hire fleet. “2015 is a special year for Salford Van Hire as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary,” said director, Alessandro Bacci. “ We chose Renault Trucks as we have had success with them over the last 12 years and they have proven to be particularly reliable. “We turned to Renault as we needed some new vehicles to keep pace with our client’s business needs as well as keeping our fleet up to date with flagship models.,” he added. “I am delighted to say the new range is being readily accepted by hirers, who find the new style of cab appealing, and we have had no adverse comments at all.”

STUDY FINDS BREAKDOWNS ARE TOP CAUSE OF HIGHWAY CLOSURES

T

he Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has discovered more than 40 per cent of all motorway and major A-road lane closures in England in 2014 were caused by vehicle breakdowns – and 122 unsupervised children caused them to be shut too. The data came from a Freedom of Information (FOI) request which revealed in total, there were 443,590 lane closures on motorways and primary A-roads in England last year for 44 defined reasons by Highways England. Some of the major findings of the report were as follows: ● 12,759 pedestrians walking on a motorway live lane or active A-road caused lane closures (three per cent of all incidences) in addition to the 122 unsupervised children. ● There were also 7446 cases of a ‘non-legal’

use of the hard shoulder – some two per cent of recorded incidences ● Other causes listed were 3990 animals loose on the network, 2598 abandoned vehicles and 6742 shed tyres ● 6,288 injury collisions and 29,656 non-injury collisions also caused lane closures ● 856 suicides or attempted suicides caused roads to be shut on England’s main routes. ● There were also 152 cases of objects being thrown onto the roads, and 567 cases of a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road causing roads to be closed. The other top five reasons for road closures (apart from breakdowns) were planned roadworks, assorted obstructions, non-injury accidents and administration (mainly police and VOSA checks).

PRESSES OLDER DRIVERS CLOCS CLOCKS UP IAM TO STAY ON THE ROAD MILESTONE CHAMPS T

Safety scheme has support from a variety of construction operators and organisations

O

verseers of the CLOCS (Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety) initiative have announced 100 organisations and individual construction projects have now shown their commitment to improving the safety of vulnerable road users through becoming CLOCS Champions – just two years after the initiative was launched. The initiative was set up to encourage the construction industry to focus on three streams of work to reduce the risk of a collision between construction vehicles and vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians. These are: improving vehicle safety, addressing the imbalance between the treatment of on-site and on-road safety, and encouraging wider adoption of best practice across the industry through adoption of a common national standard. CLOCS Champions are organisations and individual construction projects which have committed to implementing the CLOCS Standard within their own organisations and across their supply chains. The growing list of Champions is made up of fleet operators, construction clients and developers, as well as organisations

that cannot actively implement the Standard based on the nature of their business, but are committed to support its application and purpose. The current list of CLOCS Champions includes a variety of organisations, from Thames Tideway Tunnel and Travis Perkins, to the London Borough of Camden and Skanska. “Cyclist fatalities are on the rise and it’s a sad fact that too many of these incidents involve construction vehicles,” said John Hix, CLOCS project director. “But there has been a huge response to the problem from the construction industry, demonstrated by so many companies of all sizes embracing the CLOCS initiative and making a true commitment to change. “As we pass the 100 Champions mark, and with numbers continuing to increase, we encourage operators nationwide to look at the impact this work is already having,” he added. “Talking to us and the other existing Champions about improving onroad safety could be beneficial for not just other road users, but also their own staff and businesses.”

he Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has launched an initiative to encourage older drivers – statistically held to be the safest on the roads – to get their skills checked out to allow them more years of motoring on British roads. It said older drivers have been proved to be significantly safer than their younger counterparts. Last autumn, a Freedom of Information request by the IAM showed while 36,001 people between 20 and 30 were disqualified from driving for any reason in the previous 12 months, 3874 were in their 60s, 1012 were in their 70s, and just 168 were in their 80s. Also, it said a report from the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) from their Christmas 2014 anti-drink drive campaign showed the drink-drive failure rate for those under 25 was nearly double that of those over 25. IAM also pointed out government figures showed younger people were far more likely to be involved in a serious or fatal accident than older people. In the past five years (2009-13), there were 1037 people under 24 killed and 120,958 injured on UK roads as drivers and riders. The Institute said despite statistics showing they are the safest drivers on the roads, many older motorists can lose confidence as the country’s roads get busier. To help them with this, the IAM has launched a Mature Drivers Assessment (MDA) which it is highlighting

through a regional test campaign. The campaign, which will be running over four weeks across Brighton and Hove, Eastbourne, Rother and Worthing, enables senior drivers to take a 60-minute drive in their own car with an IAM-approved assessor, who will offer an impartial second opinion about their driving. With over four million full licence-holders in Great Britain over the age of 70 and over one million over the age of 80, mature drivers represent a growing segment of licensed drivers. Many of them, said IAM, choose to give up too early because they believe they are too old to continue. The IAM said it hopes its MDA regional test campaign will shift this perception and give older drivers the opportunity to gain an extra bit of reassurance behind the wheel. “Practical campaigns are needed to help keep all road-users safe, and the MDA serves to keep older drivers driving for as long as it is safe to do so,” said IAM’s chief executive, Sarah Sillars. “In March 2014, IAM research showed 42 per cent of the population is worried about an elderly relative driving, but are unlikely to take any action (6). The regional test campaign, as such, endeavours to reach out to elderly drivers and their families in the Sussex area and get them involved in the scheme that helps them drive with confidence. “The car offers older drivers the prospect of sustained safe mobility for many more years to come so an IAM MDA could be one of the best investments you ever make.”

FORTEC FITS FOR EURO HAULER

A

freight forwarder in Kent that is renowned for its runs to Greece has expanded its business after joining the Fortec Distribution Network. Intersped Logistics (UK) Ltd started life in 1982 in Dartford, Kent as Intersped Manolesos UK Ltd, concentrating solely on forwarding to destinations all over mainland Greece and the Greek islands. Owner Ray Murphy started with the company as a 16-year-old accounts assistant and worked his way up to become general manager before acquiring a minority share of the company in 2004, then complete control in 2011. Today his team organises around 2000 shipments a month within the UK, and Intersped has expanded its European operations to include Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Turkey and the Republic of Ireland. They bring ceramics, catering equipment, woodworking machines, wine and go-kart racing equipment from Italy; olives and olive oil from Greece; tiles, pots and furniture from Portugal, among other loads. Since joining the Fortec Distribution Network in November 2014, Murphy said the already expanding UK delivery side of the business was able to win even more business because of the flexibility of Fortec’s network. “We can get a vehicle into our depot here in Dartford to unload at 5 pm, and if we need to deliver the next day in Glasgow, we can now do that,” Murphy said. “We selected the Fortec because they seemed to be very down-to-earth people who we could work with. It’s been a good addition

Intersped handles cargoes sourced from all over Europe to our business, a value-added service for customers. It has certainly helped us grow. “Eighty per cent of our distribution in the UK is done by Fortec, but it’s such a seamless service that our clients wouldn’t know – they just know everything gets delivered safely and on time,” he concluded. Intersped said it has doubled its business with Greece in the past four years, despite Greece’s economic crisis. It said this was not due to an increase in exports and imports, but rather that some of the country’s own carriers have gone out of business. Intersped employs 25 people in the UK, has depots in Dartford and Manchester and a fleet of seven vehicles, from artics to sprinter vans which run exclusively in the UK. The company hires vehicles for trips abroad.

FUSO CANTERS HIT THE RAILS

N

etwork Rail has commissioned a new fleet of 20 all-wheel drive FUSO Canter trucks specially adapted for operation on rails as well as on roads. The 6.5-tonne chassis are fitted with additional sets of rail wheels at front and rear, which can be hydraulically raised for normal road operation or lowered to allow the vehicles to run on rail infrastructure. The 4x4 Canter 6C18Ds have Double crew cabs and were supplied by South Wales Mercedes-Benz dealer Euro Commercials – the German manufacturer’s franchised network also sells and supports the FUSO light truck range in the UK. They were converted for their highly unusual role by rail industry specialist GOS Tool & Engineering, of Blaenavon, South Wales, and undertake a variety of maintenance duties. Six are fitted with dropside bodies and PM cranes used to lift sleepers, rails and bags of ballast, while the remaining 14 have box bodies housing welding equipment for rail repairs. Their double-drive configuration and additional rail wheels give the Canters additional flexibility. Network Rail’s operatives can drive to a level crossing, then position their vehicle over the train track and deploy the wheels. The trucks can travel along the line to a work site. “Safety is one of our top priorities and these crane vehicles significantly reduce the amount of manual handling of heavy items that for our maintenance crews, making life easier and safer,” said Network Rail project manager, Keith Ubah. “We’ll also benefit from increased efficiencies and reduced operating costs as they are doing a job that was previously

assigned to separate road and rail vehicles.” Network Rail has previously relied on a combination of standard road-going trucks and specialised railway vehicles – which were typically hired in under contract – to carry out maintenance work on tracks. The Canter chassis began life as standard 4x4 6C18D models with 129 kW (175 bhp) four-cylinder engines, before being heavily re-worked. Network Rail provided GOS Tool & Engineering with a comprehensive set of design criteria that the vehicles, and the supplier identified the FUSO light truck as the most suitable base vehicle available. “The Canter 4x4 is ideally suited to this conversion – it’s a low-ride system, which means the road wheels sit on the rails, and the double drive gives plenty of traction,” said Neil Gregory, GOS tool & engineering director. “Also, although the truck has relatively compact dimensions, there’s still plenty of space on its ladder chassis to accommodate all of the equipment and ancillaries.”

Network Rail’s new FUSO Canters have been spec’d to undertake rail maintenance work

Some of the South’s best trucks on display at the Beaulieu National Motor Museum in Hampshire

ow in its third year, Truckmania! is gathering pace to become one of the best places to see some of the finest commercial vehicles the South of England has to offer. Taking place at the Beaulieu National Motor Museum in the heart of the picturesque New Forest in Hampshire over the second May Bank Holiday weekend, the show provides a great day out for all the family. Entry isn’t cheap, but tickets enable visitors to not only enjoy a superb collection of over 250 gleaming show trucks, but also gain entry to the rest of the Beaulieu experience - including all of its famous motor exhibits. But on this particular weekend, the emphasis was squarely on the trucks - with vehicles both new and old taking pride of place on Beaulieu’s beautifully manicured lawns. Alongside show trucks, a range of arena events also kept visitors busy - including monster truck mayhem, truck-driving skill tests, HGV parades, a frantic truck-pull challenge, an indoor model truck playground and much more. Here’s our pick of the best this year’s show had to offer...

OPERATING ADVICE

THE BIG

John Peers is an independent commercial vehicle specialist insurance broker with clients throughout the UK, from owner-drivers to international fleet operators. Contact John on 01978 758226 or 07957 403684, email john@johnpeers.com or follow him on twitter @HonestbrokerJP

INVOICE FACTORING

Q

My bank has suggested that in order to clear my overdraft and help with cashflow, I should use their invoice factoring service. Can I please have your thoughts on this idea?

A

Firstly, you would be wise to approach other factoring providers and compare the rates they quote with those your bank offers. While invoice factoring will undoubtedly help with your cashflow, it must be remembered the fees and interest charges will reduce your profits – and these charges can be quite substantial; certainly more than an overdraft which varies from day to day. I fully appreciate that working within the constraints of an overdraft can be extremely stressful, resulting in a business owner being tempted to chase turnover instead of concentrating on only profitable work. As a result, I would suggest you ask if only certain customers accounts can be used under the factoring arrangement, as customers who pay you on time do not need to be included in any factoring and the fees will simply reduce your profit margin. Also, you should have a plan in mind to be clear of needing the factoring facilities entirely within a two- to threeyear period.

LICENCE CHECKS

Q

How often do you recommend I check my drivers’ licences, as it says in my vehicle fleet policy that it is my duty as the policy holder to ensure all motoring convictions are disclosed to my insurers?

A

Up until this year, I have always recommended all drivers’ licences should be checked at least once a year, and preferably every six months. The check should require the driver to bring in their licence and you photocopy it, date it and keep the copy on your files. This would then prove to your insurers that you are taking every reasonable step to ensure any convictions are disclosed. However, with the imminent demise of the paper section of the licence, in future you will need to approach a licence-checking company who will keep you advised of any convictions received by your drivers. It is of equal importance your drivers advise you of any accidents they are involved in, regardless of fault or type of vehicle they were driving – or riding, in the case of a motorcycle.

O-D INSURANCE

Q

I am about to set up on my own as an owner-driver and wonder if you

could advise me as to whether I need to insure my vehicle comprehensive or third-party, fire and theft?

READ

A

As a general rule, I would be recommending comprehensive cover if your vehicle’s value is in excess of, say, £8000. However, this depends on certain circumstances. As an example, if the difference in the premiums quoted was, say, £1500 between comprehensive and third-party, fire and theft, and there was a policy excess of, say, £750, then you would be looking at only a total write-off as being a worthwhile claim. With you in effect standing the first £2250 and the resulting increase in future premiums for the loss of your introductory no-claims discount following a claim, it would not be economically viable to claim for anything up to, say, £4000 or £5000. However, if the difference between the quotes is only a few hundred pounds, then comprehensive cover becomes far more attractive. It should be remembered that if you insure your vehicle for third-party, fire and theft, then any trailer you pull is also subject to this limited cover. Therefore, if you are pulling customers’ trailers with a value of anything more than a few thousand pounds, then comprehensive cover will be essential.

Short Breaks: East Somerset

I

f you need to dodge the hectic pace of everyday life, there’s a little corner of Somerset which allows you to do just that. Frome is a small town offering a substantial arts scene including galleries, music gigs and festivals at The Cheese and Grain. For those wanting to hit the shops, you’ll find that most of Frome’s retailers are independent and there are many unusual and vintage shops to choose from.

Nearby Bath is a beautiful city any time of year and the Georgian architecture provides a classical backdrop to your cathedral and spa visit. Weekends see the streets lined with visitors, but also with many performers who bring colour, energy and humour into the mix. Why not visit an art exhibition at The Victoria Gallery? From July until October 2015, there will be a celebration of Jane Austen’s Bath with prints and watercolours exploring her world. And staying on a literary theme, perhaps a trip to the Jane Austen Centre would be just the thing – with refreshments at the Regency Tea Rooms, of course. If you’re feeling a little more wild, then a visit to nearby Longleat could be for you. With its safari and adventure parks, shows, events and Longleat House itself, there’s enough to keep you busy all day and beyond. And when you’ve run out of steam, you can let the train take the strain at the East Somerset Railway. Its steam locomotives are a real treat, and you can indulge in Sunday lunch served in the first class dining carriages of the Mendip Belle Dining train.

Where to stay:

The Lighthouse is a 17th century listed manor house providing bed and breakfast accommodation and boasting some 30 acres of parkland, including a fishing lake and forest walks, all available to visitors. With a varied menu which also caters for those on a gluten and dairy free diet, breakfast here is a real treat. Rooms are comfortable (there’s even a choice of family rooms), surroundings are beautiful and the staff help to make this a peaceful retreat. For light meals and snacks, there’s Cafe Nouveau on-site and for evening meals, The Fox and Hounds pub is only a couple of minutes’ walk away. The food there is truly delicious.
