he Volvo Group is currently working on a joint venture with Chalmers University of Technology and Mälardalen University in Sweden, Penn State University in the United States and the waste recycling company Renova, to develop a robot that can quietly and discreetly enter your neighbourhood, collect your refuse bin and empty it into the refuse truck. The project is called ROAR (RObot-based Autonomous Refuse handling) and the goal is to introduce a robot that, with the help of instructions from a truck’s operating system, can collect refuse bins in a neighbourhood, bring them to a refuse truck and empty them. All of this occurs under the supervision of the refuse truck’s driver, who can thereby avoid heavy lifting. Volvo said the purpose of ROAR is to demonstrate how smart machines will be used in the near future to assist with a broad range of activities in society. The technology can be applied in many areas, but refuse collection is just one example. “We foresee a future with more automation,” said Per-Lage Götvall, project leader for the Volvo Group. “This project provides a way to stretch the imagination and test new concepts to shape transport solutions for tomorrow.” The three universities are part of Volvo Group’s Academic Partner Program, a network of 12 academic partners collaborating with Volvo for long-term co-operation in research and recruitment. The students have different tasks and roles, but Mälardalens University of Västerås in Sweden will design the robot itself. “It is exciting that we are combining advanced research with our training in robotics,”
Joint project will develop a robot that will collect rubbish bins and deposit the contents in the waste collection truck automatically said project leader, Mikael Ekström. ”Many students will work on this project, and it is a huge opportunity for them to learn both the technology and how to work in teams and in a real industrial context.” At Gothenburg’s Chalmers University, students will work on the overall operating system. “Chalmers has developed the technology for the control and co-ordination of autonomous systems for many years,” said Petter Falkman, associate professor - Automation, at Chalmers, “and we see we can deal with problems of the
complex type that waste handling entails. This will be a fun and challenging project for our driven researchers and motivated students.” At Penn State’s Thomas D Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute, the graphics, communication systems and control panel for the truck driver will be developed. “We’re very lucky to have an amazing cohort of students who are well trained in automation technologies,” said Sean Brennan, lead of the Penn State team. “This project promises great opportunities for our students to not only

engage with a cutting-edge vehicle project, but also to help define how society will interact daily with robotic systems.“ Volvo said the work will continue until June 2016, when the technology will be tested on a vehicle developed by Renova. “For many years Renova has been a leader in the development of vehicle technology dedicated to fostering a better environment and work environment,” said Hans Zackrisson, development manager at AO Logistics, Renova Environment. “This project shows exciting possibilities for the future.”

ISUZUS FIT FOR FORWARD THINKING FOOD FIRM

hen it came to replacing some of the 7.5-tonne rigids in its distribution fleet, JJ Food Service Ltd has specified Isuzu Forward 7.5-tonne rigids based on the company’s previous long-term experience of running Isuzus in its 140-strong nationwide fleet. “All our Isuzus have served us really well in the past,” said JJ Food Service’s Mick Montague. “They are an excellent workhorse with outstanding payload capability. In fact, we have still got some 06-plate Isuzus running around on a daily basis within our fleet today. “For our new bespoke service for home deliveries, we felt the Isuzu Euro 6 7.5-tonner would be the ideal vehicle to handle the requirements of this specific operation,” he added. The latest replacement Isuzu Forward N75.190 4x2 rigids feature Easyshift automated transmission and are specified with a Solomon’s dual-compartment refrigerated body that has a movable bulkhead. The trucks each use Carrier
Transicold Xarios refrigeration systems as standard, and the bodies have all been fitted with the latest JJ Food Service wrap livery. “For the last few years, we have concentrated on adding 18-tonne rigids to our fleet,” Montague said. “However, recently our product range has changed considerably in terms of product categories and higher price points. “To accommodate these changes, we needed to go back to putting more 7.5-tonne vehicles into the fleet. This gives us a better, more efficient utilisation of these types of products.” JJ Food Service operates through a nationwide eight-strong branch network. Based at firm’s depot in Enfield, the latest Isuzus are being used for a range of the company’s distribution services, mainly delivering to customers in West London and the City. As the delivery routes are not particularly high mileage, JJ Food Service said it anticipated the new Isuzu delivery vehicles will have a long working life in its fleet.

JOB WEBSITE SUGGESTS MORE DRIVERS GOING FREELANCE
A
n increasing number of drivers are branching out to start their own businesses or work on a contract or freelance basis, according to data released by job website Indeed. The company said employer demand is outpacing jobseeker interest in the transport sector, and that while job growth in the transport has seen a 13 per cent increase in job availability compared to last quarter, jobseeker interest in driving roles has fallen two per cent in August from its peak in March. Indeed said the figures suggest the industry is among the first to feel the impact of an economy that is increasingly reliant on contractors and temporary hires, which has led to more drivers setting up on their own. “The tightening labour market in the UK coupled with the prevalence of self-employment is likely to accelerate this trend in the run-up to and following the introduction of the new minimum wage,” said Gerard Murnaghan, VP EMEA, Indeed. “SMEs and micro firms are major contributors to growth in the transport sectors and the backbone of the UK economy. The wage increase may discourage them from taking on additional, junior staff.” Murnaghan said the trend was of particular concern in the construction sector, which is grappling to attract young talent in an industry which does not generally appeal to the new labour force. “For an industry that is reliant on boosting its ranks with new trainees, it is also noteworthy that two thirds of construction apprentices are currently trained by micro firms – a talent stream the industry cannot afford to lose,” he said.

wo drivers from supermarket chains Iceland and Sainsbury’s have been crowned joint winners of the Renault Trucks’ Optifuel Challenge in a closely fought competition to discover the country’s most fuel-efficient driver. The winners, Simon Ellis from Sainsbury’s and Iceland’s Les Burkey, will go on to represent the UK at the Optifuel Challenge International Final to be held in Lisbon, Portugal, on October 6-8, 2015. The UK final, a two-day event at the Millbrook Proving Ground, Bedfordshire in August, saw the best drivers from some of the country’s most prestigious fleets put through their paces behind the wheel of a 32-tonne Renault Range T460 tractor unit. Adhering to the Highway Code at all times, competitors undertook a series of challenges around the Millbrook Bowl, One Mile Straight and Hill Loops 1 & 2 – a course designed to replicate mixed terrain and road types. The judges assessed key dynamic driving behaviours that affect fuel economy, including time in the green economy zone, idling time, rolling speed, coasting time and use of the brakes, all measured against the clock – and fuel consumption. Drivers also completed a short questionnaire to test their knowledge of optimised driving.
Following a close contest, Simon Ellis and Les Burkey were declared joint first for driving efficiency and each received £2000 to spend in the Renault Trucks’ Reward Store, as well as a free two-month rental of the Range T for their companies. They will now take on winners from 20 countries at the all-expenses-paid Optifuel Challenge International Final, where the overall champion will be awarded £6000 and their company will have the use of a Range T for a year. “The Optifuel Challenge showcases the Range T’s exceptional efficiency, as well as the skills of the best professional drivers on our roads,” said Nigel Butler, Renault Trucks’ UK commercial director. “Every fleet operator knows that with such a high proportion of operating costs coming from fuel, it is critical a vehicle is correctly specified and driven in a way which delivers the maximum benefits from the technology within the truck. The Optifuel Challenge is a great way of reinforcing that message while giving the drivers a chance to win some valuable prizes. “We wish both Simon and Les the very best of luck as they compete for the Optifuel Challenge International title,” Butler concluded.

Letter LACK OF RESPECT I regularly read in your newspaper about the alleged driver shortage. I work for a company in the South West of England and they have said they are not increasing pay rates as they have no problem getting drivers. The rate is £8.72 per hour for the first 50 hours. I agree that in the heartland of England there may well be a shortage of drivers, but I would argue the shortage is only in specific areas. However, the shortage will undoubtedly get worse because we cannot attract young people into the industry. The reasons why are many and varied, but the crux of the issue is young people will not be treated in the same manner as we of the older generation are used to. By this, I mean you deliver to a customer and especially supermarket RDCs and you are treated like dirt. You cannot stay with your vehicle for safety reasons. FINE. But at least provide a rest area that is clean, spacious and has the necessary facilities – such as wholesome food and drinks and clean toilets. Similarly, they don’t give a damn if you are held in effect “hostage” for as long as they seem fit. But you be half an hour late with
the delivery, and away they will send you. The reason for the late delivery is irrelevant to them, be it road closure or even a fatal road accident. Motorway service areas for LGVs are, in a word, disgusting and a complete rip off. You generally have no idea what time you will be finished on a particular day. This can be literally up to 15 hours on occasion. You tell the boss you need to be home on such and such a day as early as possible. Guess what? There is always an urgent delivery or collection to be done on that day. Young people will not put up with this BS and I really don’t blame them. Who would, when you can stack the supermarket shelves for the same money? You have no responsibilities. You know when your start and finish times are so you can plan your leisure time to suit. You don’t have the boss, DVSA and the police chasing your backside around the country. And if they can’t catch you on the spot, don’t worry – they will nail you with the telemetry on the vehicle. And so it goes on. Oh, we have a modern, up-
LITTLE RAY OF SUNSHINE
to-date fleet, the companies say. Great! The ‘modern, up-to-date’ fleet has a cab about the size of a dog kennel. And you are expected to have maybe a week away in this tiny box. Look at the US trucks used on distance work. They’re massive. Regulations say we can’t have these types of trucks. Why not? We can have extra-long trailers to carry more pallets. Shouldn’t driver comfort have come first? A well-rested and comfortable driver is a safe driver. But who cares? Not the companies, or even the government. If they were concerned about driver fatigue and comfort, then spacious US-style vehicles would have been approved years ago for distance work and nights away. It seems plain to me that we are treated as an unfortunate, but necessary evil. Maybe the whole system should fall apart and supermarket shelves and shops run empty, then out of the ensuing calamity, a better deal for the ‘Profession Driver’ may follow. Note, I did say “may”. Tesco employee Ray Cameron has just received his keys and official Yorkie bar from driver trainer Huw Ellis on his appointment as a fully trained Tesco Distribution Class 1 LGV driver. Ray is the first candidate to successfully complete the Warehouse2wheels programme at Livingston Combined DC, a scheme which allows Tesco employees to qualify as LGV drivers. A native of Cowdenbeath in the Kingdom of Fife, the former painter and decorator previously worked as a warehouse picker at the Livingston DC. Affectionately known by his colleagues as ‘The Drystanedyker’ in deference to the somewhat random nature of his cage assembly, Ray decided to further his career by taking to the open road and applying for a place on the course. Already the holder of a licence to drive smaller goods vehicles, Ray took to the course enthusiastically. He did cause Huw the odd moment of discomfort and was reminded that it is best to leave hedge trimming to the local authority, rather than using the truck mirrors to do it. To assist with off-road reversing training, Huw took to using a referee’s whistle to alert Ray to any potential hazards. He also found the whistle handy if Ray’s attention wandered while on the road by sounding a sharp blast – pretty

deafening in the close confines of a truck cab. After the requisite training, Ray successfully passed his test to drive articulated vehicles, punching the air and shouting “Yahoorsur!” when he received his pass slip. (This is a common Fife expression of great delight and endearment, but its literal meaning is best left unexplained). After further training to pass the Tesco Driver Assessment and some ‘on the job’ work experience doing store deliveries under the watchful eye of Huw, Ray has been given the green light to fly solo. Hopefully, many more colleagues will take advantage of the company scheme and join the Distribution team to address the coming driver shortage and replace some of the many drivers who are due to retire in the next few years. ADVERTORIAL
In this issue Steven Hinchliffe of the professional drivers’ “go to” Personal Injury specialists Hinchliffes Solicitors (see their advert on the front page) considers
“EXPERT PERSONAL INJURY SOLICITORS FOR HGV DRIVERS - BUT WHAT ABOUT ME?”
y firm has handled the accident claims of HGV and other professional drivers for many years. It is often the case that the driver suffers an accident during the loading and unloading process, but not surprisingly there are also many who are injured as a result of a road accident while working. However, away from work professional drivers are just as likely as anyone else to be involved in other types of accidents.
I thought it might be useful to highlight some common accident types and how we (or other Personal Injury solicitors) can assist the injured person.
We have appeared in Truckstop News for over 13 years and because we have focussed on the accidents suffered by professional drivers while at work, we may have given the impression that we do nothing else! This could not be further from the truth, as we offer a full accident compensation service to everyone.
Common accidents resulting in injury include:• while at work, which can include developing a work-related illness such as asthma, mesothelioma or asbestosis • while on the road, either as a driver, cyclist or pedestrian • caused by faulty goods or services • tripping over raised paving stones • caused by a defect in a rented property • while on holiday, either in the UK, on a cruise or abroad • caused by an animal, such as a dog bite • while playing a sport
Truckstop readers and previous truck driver clients sometimes call to ask if we could help either them, a friend or family member hurt in a non-work accident, such as while in their own car, because of a faulty pavement or while on holiday. Occasionally they seem surprised that we can, indicating that our adverts perhaps do not make this clear enough.
A Personal Injury compensation claim can be made in respect of a physical injury, disease or illness, or a psychological injury or illness. Sadly, sometimes the injury results in death and the claim is then made on behalf of the deceased’s estate.
There are many other types of accidents and if you suffer one, the best thing is to call a Personal Injury specialist to see if you can make a claim, and if so you can then decide what to do. Normally experienced accident solicitors can give advice straight away and will not charge you for this call. If you instruct them to make a claim, it will usually be on a No Win - No Fee basis, meaning if the claim is lost you will not have to pay legal fees. In my view it is essential that you are also provided with legal expenses insurance, as this will cover the cost of any medical report fees and Court fees, etc and also your opponent’s legal bill that you may become responsible for if your claim does not succeed. It is one thing losing your claim and not being compensated for your injuries, but quite another being exposed to paying £1,000s in legal fees. The best lawyer to choose is one with a good track record and is perhaps recommended by someone you know or another reliable source, such as your local Citizens Advice Bureau. The Internet can also help identify a suitable firm, but be wary of advertising from Claims Management Companies, who are less regulated and controlled than solicitors. The claims process is complicated and full of potential pitfalls, but an experienced
Steven Hinchliffe lawyer will be able to guide you through it. Uncomplicated cases with modest injuries can be concluded within a few months, but those involving disputed facts or long term consequences could take much longer. If responsibility for the accident is accepted by your opponent, but it will be a while before you recover and a value put on the claim, it should be possible for you to receive part of your compensation on account. I firmly believe that a claim should not be concluded until there is a clear medical prognosis, because if it is settled too early the compensation agreed will be the final amount. If your situation later deteriorates you will not be able to ask for more. The amount of compensation you might get varies immensely depending on the injury. For example, £1,800 may be appropriate for a broken finger and £100,000 for amputation of a leg. Sometimes accident related financial losses amount to more than the value of the injury, especially if there is a long term effect on your ability to work and you lose £1,000s in wages because of this. I hope this general outline is helpful, and demonstrates the service that my firm can offer to anyone injured in an accident. RECORDING ACTIVITIES This issue, we will look at the forms which drivers can use as an attestation of activities. On the face of it, this might not sound very exciting, but for many drivers these are crucial – and if they are not correctly completed, the consequences can be severe. This is because the form is used for activities which cannot be recorded by the tachograph – and as such, if the form is produced, it must be accurate and compliant with the legislation. In essence, there is a form for the attestation of activities established by the Commission Decision concerning social legislation relating to road transport activities. The legislation is articles 11(3) and 13 of Directive 2006/22/EC. The form of attestation shall not be required for activities that can be recorded by the tachograph. The primary source of information at the roadside checks is the recordings made by the tachograph, and the lack of records should only be justified with an attestation if tachograph records, including manual entries, were not possible for objective reasons. In all circumstances, the complete set of tachograph records, complemented by the form, when necessary, shall be accepted as sufficient evidence to prove compliance with Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 or the AETR, unless there is a justified suspicion. The attestation covers certain activities during the period mentioned in article 15 (7) (a) of Regulation (EEC) No 3821/85, namely the current day and the previous
28 days. The attestation may be used when a driver has: been on sick leave; been on leave, which forms part of the annual leave according to the legislation of the Member State where the undertaking is established; been on leave or rest; driven another vehicle exempted from the scope of Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 or AETR; performed other work than driving; been available and where it has been impossible to record these activities by the recording equipment. The box “leave or rest” may be used in a situation when the driver has not been involved in any driving, in other work or has not been available, has not been on sick leave or annual leave, including for instance also cases of partial unemployment, strikes or lock-outs. Member States are not obliged to require the use of the form in the cases of lack of records, but if a form is required, this standardised form must be recognised valid. However, no form of any type shall be requested concerning ordinary daily or weekly rest periods. The electronic and printable form as well as information regarding the Member States that accept solely this form is available at: http://bit.ly/1MAGtOc The form is accepted all over the EU in any official EU language. Its standard format facilitates understanding as it contains numbered pre-determined fields to be filled in. In AETR transport, it is recommended to use the form produced by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (www.unece.org/trans/main/sc1/sc1.html).
All the fields in the form must be filled in by typing. In order to be valid, the form must be signed both by the company representative and by the driver before the journey. For self-employed drivers, the driver signs once as the company representative and once as the driver. Only the signed original is valid. The text of the form may not be modified. The form may not be pre-signed nor may it be altered by handwritten statements. If it is legally possible according to the national legislation, a telecopy (fax) or a digitalised copy of the form may be accepted. The form may be printed on paper containing the company logo and contact details, but the fields containing the company information must also be filled in.
Disclaimer: No information in this column shall be construed as legal advice and information is offered for general information purposes only based on the current law when the article was first written. You should always seek advice from an appropriately qualified solicitor on any specific legal enquiry.

SUNDERLAND PAIR JAILED AFTER 4M CIGARETTES FOUND IN TRUCK
T
wo smugglers who plotted to flood the North East with a shipment of four million illicit cigarettes have been jailed after an HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) investigation revealed their scam. Brian Storey, 28, of Blyton Avenue, Ryhope, was stopped by Border Force officers at the Port of Dover after arriving on a ferry from France in July 2013. Inside his HGV, they discovered cigarettes worth £919,000 in unpaid duty – hidden among pallets of toilet roll. The find triggered an investigation by HMRC that revealed Storey’s accomplice, 38-year-old Richard Watt, of Chiswick Road, Sunderland, had obtained a credit card under a false name he used to make Storey’s travel arrangements. Alan Tully, assistant director, Fraud Investigation Service, HMRC, said: “This was a calculated and audacious bid to profit from the sale of illicit tobacco. But conspiring to sneak four million illegal cigarettes through Dover proved to be Storey and Watt’s undoing – it was a greedy gamble that has cost them their liberty. “Disrupting criminal trade is at the heart of our strategy to clamp down on the illicit tobacco market, which costs the UK around £2.1 billion a year.” During interview, Storey said he believed the
HGV only contained toilet roll and dried food, and that he didn’t know the identity of the man who had made his travel arrangements. Analysis of his unregistered pay-as-you-go mobile phone revealed calls with an unknown contact regarding the tobacco shipment. Attention then turned to the ferry booking, which had been made using a pre-paid credit card supposedly belonging to a ‘Paul Kaye’. But enquiries with the card issuer established that a bank statement and driving licence used in the application process were counterfeit. Paul Kaye, it seemed, didn’t exist. Richard Watt was arrested in October 2013 after the address used on the Paul Kaye credit card application was found to be his own. During interview, he denied any knowledge of the cigarettes seized from Storey’s HGV and said he hadn’t created the Paul Kaye alias. Both were charged with the fraudulent evasion of excise duty and pleaded guilty to the charges at Maidstone Crown Court in February and June 2015. Watt was sentenced to three years in prison, Storey to two years, by His Honour Judge Norton at Canterbury Crown Court on Friday, September 18, 2015. Two other men, from Morpeth and Chesterle-Street, were cleared of involvement following a trial in July 2015.

iesel transport refrigeration units in the EU could have the same air quality impact as up to 65 million diesel cars, according to a new report by clean cold technology company, Dearman. The company’s Liquid Air on the European Highway found there are are approximately one million refrigerated vehicles in the EU, transporting perishable goods within the supply chain – and it said their environmental cost has never before been assessed. “This is the first time the environmental cost of transport refrigeration has been quantified, and the results have been shocking,” said professor Toby Peters, CEO of Dearman and Visiting Professor in Power and Cold Economy at University of Birmingham. “With 400,000 people dying prematurely every year in the EU as a result of air pollution, we simply cannot afford to ignore these hidden polluters any longer. “Awareness is growing in the UK and the policy landscape just beginning to change, but action is needed now to prevent further environmental damage,” he added. Dearman’s report focuses on diesel transport refrigeration units, which it said can emit up to 29 times as much particulate matter and six times as much harmful NOx as a Euro 6 truck engine. Dearman is currently demonstrating a zero-emission transport refrigeration system, powered by liquid nitrogen. The system will be in on-road commercial trials in the UK later this year, with European trials to follow in 2016 before entering commercial manufacture in 2017.

DB SPEC’S JACK-OF-ALL-TRADES CRANE TRUCK
C
harlton Bodies of Dover has just delivered one of its most comprehensively equipped multipurpose platform bodies ever to Bristolbased DB Plant & Lifting Ltd. Mounted on an 8x2 Scania chassis, the new truck gives DB the ability to move a wide range of plant, machinery and general equipment. Representing an investment of over £200,000, the vehicle is the largest yet in DB’s all-Charlton fleet. Key to providing the truck’s exceptional operational versatility is its massive eightstage FASSI F485 48-tonne/m crane that enables both the movement of heavy individual items, as well as the ‘long reach’ placement and recovery of a wide range of construction-related equipment. “Our latest truck gives us the ability to offer our services across the widest possible client base, and with the highest possible degree of operational versatility,” said DB director, Mark Davis. “We have worked closely with Charlton to design and build a bodywork package that fully meets all our existing and anticipated requirements. The result is an unqualified success.”
The truck’s 24 ft hardwood body also features pressed steel outriggers and RSC side raves, combined with recessed lashing rings and container twistlocks to provide both heavy-duty durability and load security for any type of cargo. In addition, Charlton’s two-stage webbing arrest system running down each side of the body prevents any accidental falls by the crane operator when working on the vehicle’s deck. At the rear of the deck, there’s a topaccess recessed locker for carrying heavy equipment such as the lifting chains. Underneath the body, each side features a high-capacity aluminium locker as well as a storage rack for the four pads for the feet of the extendible stability legs. The ability to work outside in adequate light is also another key requirement for this type of vehicle. As well as rear-facing spotlamps mounted to the cab roof to illuminate the deck, Charlton has also fitted LED ‘puddle lighting’ to the periphery of the body in addition to an array of amber flashing strobe lights. Given the truck has also been configured to work in 44-tonne gtw drawbar mode, an LED
Operator carefully configured the Scania chassis to be able to lift and shift a wide range of cargo worklamp has also been fitted to ease trailer coupling. Powered by an 410 bhp engine, the 5.9 m wheelbase Scania chassis comes with a lifting and steering rear axle – this axle and
the two front axles also being fitted with 385/65R22.5 tyres to provide additional load capacity. The vehicle has an expected service life of at least 10 years.
TIMBER HAULIER SUSPENDED AFTER DRIVERS’ HOURS INFRINGEMENTS
A
Kippen timber haulier has been suspended from operating HGVs for two months after Scotland’s traffic commissioner heard the owner had breached rules designed to prevent driver fatigue. Joan Aitken said she hoped the decision against MH Young Ltd – along with a three month professional driving suspension for director Melissa Young – would act as “the biggest wake up call she could ever get in her career as a driver and haulier”. Her directions follow a public inquiry in Edinburgh in June which heard about issues with vehicle and driver safety standards. Examiners from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) reported concerns over the roadworthiness of vehicles operated by MH Young Ltd, including the issue of
prohibition notices for safety critical defects. Miss Aitken was told that numerous drivers’ hours offences had been identified during the DVSA investigation, including four offences of exceeding the daily driving limit of 10 hours. The traffic commissioner was also made aware of two mobile phone offences for Ms Young, both of which were committed in an HGV. In a written decision issued after the hearing, Aitken said: “A professional driver of 10 years standing should not have incurred the level of drivers’ hours offences which Miss Young has done. “She has become careless and self-serving by doing this and I formed the impression that she had listened to far too many others within forestry haulage in particular, and had allowed herself to be lured into the laziness and carelessness
of not keeping a true record of breaks and other work.” Aitken noted that drivers’ hours and tachograph rules were in place to prevent driver fatigue and that a tired driver/ operator is a risk to road safety. “By not organising her working life to take clear breaks at the prescribed intervals and to exceed her hours, Ms Young has prejudiced road safety,” she added. The traffic commissioner’s orders came into effect at 23:59 on August 31, 2015. The operator’s licence held by MH Young Ltd was suspended for two months from that date. Ms Young’s vocational licence to driver large goods vehicles was suspended for three months from that date. Ms Young was also warned as to her repute, in respect of her role as transport manager.

Solicitor Steven Hinchliffe completed the Tough Mudder challenge at Cirencester Park
ou would think a 62-year-old personal injury solicitor would have more sense than to battle with people half his age over an 11-mile muddy assault course. You would be right – but that did not stop Steven Hinchliffe, Accident Spot author and owner of Hinchliffes Solicitors, from doing just that. On August 22, he took part in the Tough Mudder event at Cirencester Park and in addition to the 11-mile run, he climbed 12 ft vertical walls, elbowed and kneed his way under barbed wire, jumped off high platforms into muddy water and tackled countless other muddy obstacles, before finally running through an electric shock field. The photograph shows him at the finish – smiling not because he has been presented with a ‘finisher’s headband’, but because he is about to be awarded with a pint of cider! Steven said: “This was as hard as I feared, but was great fun. Next year I will try and get some of my aging friends to do it as well and see how many of us survive the ordeal.”

NIFRS is a longstanding user of Volvo appliances, including Water Tenders and Pump Ladders, which have played a key role Volvo showcased the new FL fire truck at the in the fleet for around 30 years. NEC’s Emergency Services Show Chassis specification of the FL816 Water Tender / Pumping Appliance includes drive-axle air suspension. It’s powered by Volvo’s Euro 6 D8K280 engine rated at 280 bhp (206 kW). Maximum power is developed at 2100 rpm, and the D8K280 delivers maximum torque of 1050 Nm between 950–1700 rpm. The FL618 on show was equipped with an Allison 3000 series automatic transmission. The bodywork was manufactured by Strong’s Plastic Products, and the main bodybuilder was Emergency One Ltd of Cumnock, Ayrshire.

DRIVERS DECIDE ON INSTARMAC’S NEW RIGIDS
C
ementitious and bitumen-based products manufacturer Instarmac has added five new TGS 26.320 6x2 curtainsiders to its fleet. “We have previously run MAN vehicles within the fleet and we carried out some research when some of the vehicles were due for replacement,” said Andy Ryan, logistics manager at the Tamworth-based company. “Efficiency and economy were clearly key factors in the decisions, but we also asked our drivers what they are looking for. “After analysis of all that information, it was clear the TGS was the right choice for us as part of our rolling replacement of vehicles as
they reach six years on the road. “The drivers were especially keen on the brand and the feedback we have had is the cab size makes a difference – and the MANs win on that score.” Instarmac, in Staffordshire, has taken delivery of the trucks, branded in their distinctive orange livery. There are five brands within the Instarmac family: Ultratcrete, Ultrascape, Ultratile, Ultrafloor and Wondertex. “The new trucks will be responsible for delivering our products nationwide as we find there is less damage incurred using our own fleet and drivers,” Ryan added.

ISSUE 353 OCTOBER 20 2015
IAM: ROAD CASUALTY FIGURES NOT FALLING FAST ENOUGH T he Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has published a breakdown of figures showing the numbers of people killed and seriously injured on roads in England and Wales for the last full year by police force area. The figures show the full year figures by police force area for 2014 compared to 2013, and the percentage change from 2013. IAM said only 14 areas out of 43 achieved any reduction on their 2013 figures. One area was unchanged in percentage terms (Cambridgeshire), while 28 all saw an increase. Derbyshire was the only police force area to have an increase of more than 30 per cent over the previous year. Three other areas increased by more than 20 per cent – namely Leicestershire, Surrey and Wiltshire. The top five worst performing areas were: 1. Derbyshire – from 378 to 522 (up 38 per cent from 2013 to 2014)
2. Leicestershire – from 293 to 374 (up 28 per cent from 2013 to 2014) 3. Surrey – from 599 to 735 (up 23 per cent from 2013 to 2014) 4. Wiltshire – from 260 to 314 (up 21 per cent from 2013 to 2014) 5. Cheshire – from 461 to 548 (up 19 per cent from 2013 to 2014)
Conversely, Suffolk comfortably saw the greatest reduction over the previous 12 months, at 17 per cent. The only other areas achieving a double-digit reduction were Durham and Gwent, at 14 per cent. The top five best performing areas were: 1. Suffolk – from 219 to 242 (down 17 per cent from 2013 to 2014) 2. Durham – from 242 to 208 (down 14 per cent from 2013 to 2014) 3. Gwent – from 174 to 149 (down 14 per cent from 2013 to 2014) 4. City of London – from 60 to 55 (down eight per cent from 2013 to 2014)
5. Metropolitan – from 2267 to 2115 (down seven per cent from 2013 to 2014)
Official 2014 figures showed there were 1775 reported road deaths in 2014, an increase of four per cent compared with 2013. The number of those killed or seriously injured in Britain increased by five per cent to 24,582. There were a total of 194,477 casualties of all severities, an increase of six per cent – the first increase in overall casualties in 18 years. “We want to make clear that a one-year comparison cannot be taken as an overall trend of what might be happening in any particular area,” said Sarah Sillars, IAM chief executive officer. “However, 2014 was not a good year for accidents and it should serve as a wakeup call to every road safety partnership that they are under scrutiny and road safety must remain a priority as public sector spending cuts continue,” she concluded.

Direct question
Q
My accountant has said I should have directors and officers insurance, but although I am in partnership with my brother and father and we are not a limited company, we are not directors. Your advice, please.
A
It is a very popular misconception that only directors of limited companies need to have D&O insurance, and yet partnerships and family-owned companies are just as much at risk as any corporate company. We are all subject to the raft of employment legislation and scrutiny by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. You can be forced to defend allegations,
unfounded or otherwise, which can be extremely expensive and stressful. Personal liability and criminal liability claims can be made against you, and D&O insurance can cover the legal defence costs which can run into many tens of thousand of pounds. Your accountant is perfectly right in suggesting you have this cover, and I would be more than happy to quote for you and your family members/partners.
Fleet cover?
Q
I am now running three trucks, each insured separately, and I hope to be adding at least two more over the next six months. When is it likely to be more costeffective for me to have a fleet policy?
A
I would be looking for quotes now, as in your circumstance, where you are clearly building your business, the sooner you have a fleet and then know precisely how much each additional vehicle is going to cost you to insure, the sooner you can calculate your running costs and profits. Different insurance companies offer different points after which they will consider a fleet. Some require five vehicles or more, while others will look at a situation like yours where you are adding vehicles on a regular basis in short time scales. It may help to reach other insurers’ minimum number of vehicles if you include any cars or vans you may own with your fleet insurance enquiry. Fleet policies can offer substantial reduction in insurance costs in some instances, and you need the services of an independent specialist truck insurance broker to search the whole of the market for you.
Asset rich, cash poor
Q
I own my two vehicles outright, but am struggling against a bank overdraft due to my customers paying me late. I am therefore asset rich to some extent, but
cash poor. Can you offer any advice?
A
If you are otherwise happy with your customers and they all do eventually pay you, albeit late, then I can very much understand your frustration with your bank. However, if your customers are likely to let you down, then you need to be looking at the profitability of continuing to carry for bad-paying customers. Working against an overdraft is stressful, and all too often means a person in that position makes the wrong business decisions, perhaps taking on work they know will pay on time, but ignoring whether it is profitable. I think you should strongly consider taking out some finance on your vehicles to raise enough to clear your overdraft once and for all, taking advantage of the incredibly low interest rates on offer at the moment. I can put you in contact with a finance broker who will be able to advise you on the options available to you.
READ
Sales query
Q
I am thinking of setting up in business in car and van sales and wonder what insurances I will need. Can you help?
A
You will need a motor trade policy, as this will allow you to collect and deliver cars as well as insuring your “stock” of vehicles which you may hold at any one time. If you intend to carry out any repairs and servicing, a motor trade policy can extend to include defective workmanship cover – which is essential for anyone carrying out any mechanical work on vehicles. It is very much a case of shopping around, as some insurers will not be very competitive for new start businesses without any track record or motor trade policy no-claim bonus, while others will be quite happy to quote for new start-up businesses.

Charity bike riders raised £53,000 for Transaid Executives from the transport and logistics industry pedalled more than 330 km across Wales and Ireland this weekend, conquering hills and negotiating steep descents, raising £53,000 for international development charity, Transaid. The 30 riders set off on Friday, September 18 from Carmarthen, covering the shortest distance of the three days, to finish in Fishguard and catch a ferry to the port town of Rosslare, Ireland. Day two saw the group travelling 120 km from Wexford to Carlow, with a short stop in Bunclody beside the River Slaney. The final day’s ride on Sunday took the challengers 130 km through areas of outstanding natural beauty, including Glendalough and the Wicklow Mountains National Park, which saw the group contending with steep gradients and pouring rain. The group finished the cycle at Dublin’s Trinity College.

Transaid said money raised from the event will provide vital unrestricted funds towards its projects, which seek to improve the lives of people in Africa by implementing emergency transport systems and expanding access to healthcare and livelihoods. “Cycling 350 km across hilly Welsh and Irish countryside is no mean feat, and I would like to congratulate the riders on their determination and for making this year’s European ride such a success,” said Gary Forster, Transaid CEO. “It was great to see some familiar faces back for another year and to welcome new riders who were looking for a challenge and to raise funds for such a worthy cause.” The event was sponsored by uTrack, a management software provider for the bus and coach industry, and included participants from companies including Arthur J Gallagher, Backhouse Jones Solicitors, Centrad, Clipper Group, Delin Capital, ITSO, Malcolm Logistics, Transaid, uTrack, Wolseley UK, XPO Logistics and XPO Transport Services.
