NIDERA PREDICTS FUEL SAVINGS WITH NEW ACTROS FLEET

G

rain, seed and fertiliser merchant Nidera reckons it’s seeing increased fuel efficiency after commissioning its first Mercedes-Benz tractor units equipped with Predictive Powertrain Control. The Ipswich-based operator said the results have enabled it to stand down its last three non-Merc trucks so that by the end of 2015, it’s entire 40-vehicle fleet will wear a three-pointed star. Supplied by East Anglia dealer Orwell Truck & Van, the five new trucks are all Actros 2445 models with StreamSpace cabs and small-wheeled (17.5 inch) mid-lift axles, which offer a weight saving of 300 kg compared to the standard version with 22.5 inch wheels. The lighter mid-lift axles are contributing to improved economy when the vehicles run empty, as well as increasing payload capacity. However, Nidera operations director Tim Capey said he believed the main reason for the early mpg performance is Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) and associated driver training. PPC is a cruise control system that works in conjunction with the PowerShift

3 automated transmission and employs three-dimensional GPS mapping to read 3 km of topography ahead. It responds by controlling gear changes, speed and braking to maximise fuel efficiency. Mercedes-Benz said the system is particularly effective in hilly terrain and can cut fuel costs by up to five per cent. “It is difficult to make precise comparisons given the different routes and the varying ages of our vehicles,” Capey said. “However, it’s fair to say that in terms of fuel returns, the early indications from these new PPCequipped vehicles are very positive. “This is partly down to the technology, but also to the excellent coaching provided to our drivers by Orwell’s Lee Betts – in one case, the result has been an improvement of as much as 0.6 mpg, which is very encouraging.” Nidera’s latest trucks are powered by 449 bhp straight-six engines and are also fitted with FleetBoard telematics systems. They will pull bulk tipping trailers and make nationwide deliveries of cereals, oilseeds and pulses to customers in the food, feed and bio-energy industries.

KEELE’S FREE TRUCK TYRE ANALYSIS EXTENDED

A

free truck tyre monitoring service set up within the motorway service area between Junctions 16 and 15 of the southbound M6 at Keele, Staffordshire by a partnership between Highways England (HE), motorway services operator Welcome Break and drive-over tyre technology developer WheelRight Ltd, has been extended. The pilot project, initiated by HE’s national incident prevention team, aims to make drivers aware of issues with tyres before they get back on the motorway. Highways England said it chose Keele because incident figures show the area of the M6 is particularly prone to tyre-related breakdowns and incidents. It said across England, there are 3600 wheel or tyre-related incidents on the country’s motorways and major A-roads every month. The project was launched in April this year for an initial three-month trial period, but HE said it has been so successful – now testing over 1000 vehicles a week – it has been extended until December 31. Under the scheme, drivers stopping off for a break at the services can drive their truck through one of two dedicated sensor stations which instantly assess each vehicle’s actual

Free automated tyre checking service will now run until the end of the year tyre pressures. The sensors then provide the driver with a print-out detailing the inflation of every tyre. The process takes 30 seconds with the sensor stations offering a self-service facility – although WheelRight’s on-site staff are on hand to offer help and advice if required. “The primary cause of commercial vehicle tyre failure is under-inflation,” said John Walford, Highways England’s incident prevention manager. “Tyre-related problems are a major factor behind routine breakdowns and other, more serious incidents on our motorways and major A-roads, leading to congestion, injuries and in some cases fatalities. “The associated costs, particularly in terms of congestion, are a brake on economic performance and this project is tackling the

issue head on by alerting drivers to issues and allowing them to sort those out before leaving the services and resuming motorway journeys.” Government figures suggest one in 12 HGV tyres are dangerously under-inflated. HE said it had found many truck drivers did not know the correct PSI for their vehicles, and many left tyre maintenance to their depots and did not check pressures themselves – especially with hard-to-reach tyres on the inside of axles. Highways England said its incident prevention team is also investigating ways of quickly scanning vehicles – especially trucks – for other issues such as tyre tread depth, overheating brakes or axles which can cause lorries to break down suddenly, leading to congestion.

Letter EXPERIENCE HURDLE I am 20 years old and I have just passed my HGV Class 2 test. I’ve been interested in trucks since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, so all I’ve ever wanted to do is get my HGV licence and get out on the road. The plan was to take my Class 1 at 21, however things didn’t go quite to plan and I was made redundant from an apprenticeship seven months in. Having been out of work, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and get my Class 2 to get a bit of driving experience under my belt. Having passed my Class 2 in May, I set about sending numerous letters and emails out to various hauliers around Devon and Somerset to see if they would consider taking me on. Out of about 30 letters I sent out the first time around, I received five replies. So leaving it a couple of weeks, I sent out another batch of letters to both companies I’d contacted before, plus a few other ones who I’d thought of. Out of this second batch, I received two replies. All of the replies I received from

companies stated that I haven’t got enough experience, and if I wish to do so, I should contact them in around three to six months’ time. That’s all very well, but considering no one wants to give me a chance, I cannot get that experience! However, it seems the majority of companies I have been in contact with cannot be bothered to reply. As I said before, out of around 30 letters and emails I’ve sent out, only about seven firms have even bothered to get back to me. In all honesty, in this day and age, surely typing a quick letter or email isn’t too hard to do? I spent all of the money I’d saved up from my apprenticeship on the Hazard Perception and Theory tests, along with the relevant CPC modules. That’s before I even spent money at the training school for the week’s intensive course, plus test fee. Unfortunately, it took me a few attempts to pass my test, so that ultimately cost me more money. At the end of it, I’m around £5000 down and I’m still without a job, so recouping that money seems a long way off.

I was led to believe that there was a chronic shortage of drivers out there; even my instructors at the training school, along with the DVSA examiner I had for my test, said that I’d get a job, no problem. But I’m still looking. I thought the driver shortage was gripping the whole of the UK, but it seems to me as if Devon and Somerset has remained somewhat unaffected by it. However, I think the more likely scenario is that companies are not prepared to give young, newly qualified drivers like me a chance. As I mentioned before, if nobody is prepared to give me that lucky break, how am I supposed to gain any experience? If I’m honest, if I knew how frustrating and disheartening it was going to be being constantly turned down for jobs as I’m not considered to have the required experience, I’d have seriously had a rethink on doing my Class 2. I’m not sure if it’s the case or not, but it seems easier for newly qualified Class 1 drivers to get a job than it is for Class 2. Name and address supplied

In this book, author Dug Thompson takes us on a journey inside some of the most creatively customised trucks, vans and cars on the planet. Featuring a mix of informative text and exhaustive photographic material, the book is a comprehensive compendium of customisation – and at 192 pages, there’s certainly plenty to dig in to. The publication is also rounded out with full-colour reproductions of articles previously printed in road transport magazines, and it makes for a fascinating read.

n the last issue Steven Hinchliffe looked at a situation experienced by a reader of Truckstop News, whose accident resulted in a claim for personal injury compensation. Part 1 looked at the initial steps taken.

You will remember that my client, Mr K Abbott, had been injured when stepping down from a forklift truck when he turned his foot on the edge of a defective drainage hole. A claim was made and the defendant’s insurers quickly accepted responsibility for the accident, but wanted to reduce the full value of the claim by 20% as they suggested Mr Abbott was partly to blame. CASE STUDY - FORKLIFT TRUCK DRIVER INJURED DUE TO DEFECTIVE WORKPLACE - PART 2 Solicitor Phillip Roberts advised Mr Abbott that the defendant’s insurers’ desire to reduce his compensation by 20% was unwarranted and should be resisted. He agreed and instructed us to battle on. The next step was to obtain medical evidence, which involved getting copies of Mr

ADVERTORIAL

In this issue Steven Hinchliffe of the professional drivers’ “go to” Personal Injury specialists Hinchliffes Solicitors (see their advert on the front page) considers

“THE OUTCOME FOR THE INJURED FLT DRIVER” Abbott’s medical records so we could firstly see what his pre-accident medical condition was, and then consider the injuries suffered and the treatment he received. All of this information, plus a detailed description of how the accident happened, was sent to an A&E Consultant with a request that he prepare a written report, which we received a couple of months later. However, the report was not prepared until after the Consultant had read all the relevant evidence surrounding the accident, and also given Mr Abbott a full examination. The report confirmed that he had sustained an injury to his left ankle that included a tiny avulsion fracture (which is where a fragment of bone tears away from the main bone), but was treated as if it was a ligament injury. Following the accident it was very painful, but by the time of the examination this had significantly reduced. The Consultant concluded that it was reasonable for Mr Abbott to have had 4 weeks off work and noted that he could not drive during this period. He had already had a course of 6 sessions of physiotherapy, and so long as he had a further course of treatment, the Consultant felt he would make a complete recovery within 12-18 months from the date of the accident. Phillip sent Mr Abbott a copy of the medical report for approval, together with his views on the value of the claim in money terms, and suggested that an offer be put to the insurers to try and reach a settlement. Mr Abbott agreed, but the insurers failed to respond to the offer within the 21 day period allowed by the Rules. Phillip had to chase them on many occasions as they were very slow and to a degree uncooperative in dealing with the claim. They did eventually respond, but with an unacceptably low counter offer. However, after some negotiation were persuaded to increase this to a sensible level and the case settled. Importantly, it settled for full value and Mr Abbott did not suffer the 20% reduction that the insurers initially sought. The outcome was a fair one and Mr Abbott received his compensation a few days later. This comprised £2,950 for his injuries, plus £900 for his financial losses, mainly relating to lost wages while off work and the additional physiotherapy treatment needed. The insurers had been difficult to deal with throughout the case and it did not stop here, because when we presented them with details of our costs (which they had to pay under the terms of the settlement), they made a daft offer that was rejected.

Steven Hinchliffe We had been able to avoid Court proceedings in dealing with the compensation element of the claim, but now had to ask the Court to assess the legal costs that had to be paid. This involved us issuing an application to the Court for an Order allowing the dispute to be resolved by a Judge. We then had to draft a long and detailed schedule of all the work we had done and expenses incurred, and then respond to a lengthy list of disputed items raised by the solicitors appointed by the insurers to deal with costs issues. This process went on for months and about 3 weeks before the date when a Judge would make a decision, the insurers caved in and agreed to pay what was due. We had incurred an additional £1,300 in dealing with the costs dispute, which they also had to pay. This is a fairly typical example of how defendant insurers sometimes act unreasonably in every aspect of a claim, hoping that either the injured person or their solicitor will buckle under pressure and accept less than the case merits. Mr Abbott’s claim was several years ago, but I regret to say that the tactics of the insurance industry have not changed! The issue can be summed up as exceptional deviation from minimum rest and maximum driving limits in order to find a suitable stopping place. The relevant legislation is Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 561/2006. Article 12 contains provisions that permit a driver to depart from the minimum rest requirements and maximum driving times contained in Articles 6 to 9 in order to find a suitable stopping place. This article does not authorise a driver to derogate from the Regulation for reasons known before the journey commenced. It is designed to enable drivers to deal with cases where it unexpectedly becomes impossible to comply with the Regulation during the course of the journey; that is, in situations of abnormal difficulties, independent of the will of the driver and apparently unavoidable that may not be anticipated, even if all due care is taken. The derogation has also the function of ensuring the safety of persons, of the vehicle and of its load and the requirement that road safety must in any event be taken into account. In the Commission’s guidance notes, it identifies

three parties who have certain obligations in relation to such situations: 1) A transport undertaking must plan carefully a driver’s safe trip foreseeing, for instance, regular traffic jams, weather conditions and access to adequate parking places, that is, it must organise work in such a way that drivers are able to comply with the Regulation and should take into account the requirements of shippers and insurance companies concerning safe parking are satisfied. 2) A driver must rigorously stick to the rules and not deviate from driving time limits unless exceptional circumstances occur unexpectedly and it becomes impossible to comply with the Regulation without endangering road safety, the safety of persons, the vehicle or its load. If a driver decides it is necessary to derogate from the Regulation and that this will not jeopardise road safety, he/she must indicate the nature and reason for derogation manually (in any Community language, on the record sheet or on the print out from the recording equipment or on the duty roster) as soon as he/she stops. 3) An enforcer must apply professional discretion when controlling a driver and assessing whether the departure from driving limits is justified. When assessing the legitimacy of the deviation on the basis

of Article 12 all circumstances must be examined carefully by an enforcer including: (a) a history of driver’s driving records to establish the pattern of driver’s performance and verify whether the driver normally complies with driving and rest time rules, and that the deviation is exceptional; (b) the deviation from driving time limits must not be a regular occurrence and must be caused by exceptional circumstances such as: major traffic accidents, extreme weather conditions, road diversions, no place at the parking area, etc. (This list of possible exceptional circumstances is only indicative. The principle for assessment is that the motive of possible deviation from driving limits must not be known or even possible to foresee beforehand); (c) daily and weekly driving limits should be respected, hence the driver should not have any ‘time gains’ by exceeding driving limit in search of a parking place; (d) the deviation from the driving time rules must not lead to a reduction of the required breaks, daily and weekly rest. So the legislation does provide for such deviations, but the circumstances must be carefully considered before being undertaken and be recorded.

Disclaimer: No information in this column shall be construed as legal advice and information is offered for general information purposes only based on the current law when the article was first written. You should always seek advice from an appropriately qualified solicitor on any specific legal enquiry.

STEERING SYSTEM SETTLES IN FOR THE LONG HAUL

Independent front suspension and Volvo Dynamic Steering can now be fitted to lefthand drive FH and FH16 models

V

olvo Trucks has announced its independent front suspension system can now be specified in combination with Volvo Dynamic Steering – though it’s currently only offered on left-hand drive vehicles. The Swedish manufacturer said the combination is particularly beneficial for longhaul drivers, where the difference in terms of stability, precision and control is more noticeable during long drives. In addition, steering is lighter and smoother at low speeds. “This is an entirely unique combination that gives the driver perfect steering feel and driveability,” said Kristin Signert, long haul

segment manager, Volvo Trucks. The manufacturer said its independent front suspension system’s rack and pinion steering is designed to offer more direct steering feedback and give a “crisper” feeling of precision and control. Volvo Dynamic Steering works to reduce steering wheel movements caused by vibrations emanating from the road surface, which means lighter and smoother steering for the driver. The combination of these two systems can be now be specified for FH and FH16 models, but for the time being the option is only available for left-hand drive vehicles.

KBC CUTS SPEEDING WITH TELEMATICS TECH

H

aulier KBC Logistics reckons it has improved the safety of its drivers by using TomTom’s telematics system to cut instances of speeding by 95 per cent. The firm, which operates a 120-strong fleet of 44-tonne articulated trucks, has introduced a risk management initiative underpinned by WEBFLEET, TomTom’s fleet management platform. “With WEBFLEET we have been able to address poor driving performance and improve our safety risk profile by having clear, real-time, insights into our drivers’ behaviour behind the wheel,” said KBC Logistics’ transport and compliance manager, David Ashford. “In addition to reduced instances of speeding, we have also witnessed a marked reduction in harsh steering and braking.” The OptiDrive 360 indicator in WEBFLEET scores drivers based on a range of key

performance indicators, and KBC has used daily colour-coded (red, amber and green) reports to help identify areas for improvement. The company also said it has seen a “significant” uplift in productivity, using WEBFLEET to increase the average number of daily journeys from around 100 to 150 – peaking at 170 trips per day. “With a rapidly expanding vehicle fleet, we needed a system that could give us clear fleet visibility to help us optimise operational efficiency and meet strict customer ETAs,” Ashford said. “WEBFLEET’s accurate ETAs, based on highly accurate traffic and historic road use data, enable us to better plan and complete follow-up jobs. By adding destination addresses to orders and sending all job details to drivers’ in-cab terminals, we can also save time by automatically routing them to customers,” he concluded.

The success of ASE attracted attention from Volvo’s head office in Sweden and the concept was replicated in Europe when, based on the original concept that was started at Warwick, a call Peter Bryant holds up a photo of the original team centre was opened in Gent,

TRAILER IS NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

D

ennison Trailers has launched a new sliding block trailer design with enhanced health and safety features aimed at the construction industry. The manufacturer said its new sliding block model is “nothing like” a conventional flatbed for bricks and block. It can close up to 9.16 m in length, meaning that when coupled with the flexibility of the sliding platform feature, the trailer has increased manoeuvrability around tight construction sites. Other features of the sliding block trailers include air-operated locking pins, which utilise the trailer’s own air supply to react and release the slider lock pins, and won’t release the trailer brakes until the pins are fully located; a raised suzie hood to support

the use of suzie coils designed to eliminate sagging when in operation; and roll-along crane mounts suitable for various makes and model of roll-along cranes, used to manoeuvre on the top flange for loading and unloading blocks and bricks.

KERSEY’S TRAILERS TO BOOST CARGO SECURITY

K

ersey Freight has taken delivery of 15 Dry Liner box trailers from Krone Trailers UK which the operator said provides additional security against migrant problems – as well as additional load capacity. With daily destinations throughout Europe, Kersey Freight said it was keenly aware of the potential risk of migrant stowaways at all major ports. As a result, the company has taken steps to guard against break ins. “The Dry Liners offer better security against immigrants at Calais because the rear doors are more secure,” said fleet manager, Robert Steele. “We have found that with other box vans, which use conventional hinge pins and door locking bars on the outside, the immigrants can unbolt the door bars and hinge pins, remove the door and enter the trailer. Then the door is refitted. “In these circumstances, the driver checks his trailer the following day and sees the seal is still intact – the door lock is still on, and therefore he has no reason to suspect it has been tampered with. The consequences of this can of course be serious.” Krone designed its Dry Liner doors with the door locking bars inside the door, whereby the hinge pins are not accessible from the outside. Furthermore, the hinged stainless steel door

locking bar, once in the locked position, covers the door handles – which means no entry can be gained. This, according to Kersey Freight, provides guaranteed security against even the most determined criminal. Kersey said the Dry Liner, which was launched by Krone in the UK in September, also provides additional space for cargo. “These box vans have a low profile roof, which gives us increased load capacity,” Steele said. “Sometimes it means we can get an extra layer of goods in the trailer when loading to the roof. Also, the roof is strong, which is an added plus for security. We have found roofs on other box vans to be flimsy, which has led to leaking roofs and damaged goods.” Krone’s Dry Liner is designed to work in the UK, Ireland and European markets and with a fifth wheel height of 1250 mm, common to the UK, with a total height of 4100 mm. With the fifth wheel height at 1150 mm, common to mainland Europe, the overall height is 4000 mm – yet an internal height of 2700 mm (8 ft 10 inches) is still achieved. The Kersey Freight fleet comprises 67 trailers, including curtainsiders and container carriers, while traction is provided by a mixture of 20 Scanias and DAFs.

Kersey Freight’s fleet manager, Robert Steele, reckons Dry Liner trailers provide beefier load security

SURVEY SHOWS MODERN CARS ARE OUTSMARTING THEIR DRIVERS

T

he average UK driver is currently being outsmarted by their own car, according to new research. In a survey of 1000 British car owners carried out by BookMyGarage.com, it emerged 73 per cent of respondents don’t understand how to use all of the high tech gadgets and safety features in their vehicle. This is despite over half (54 per cent) of British adults admitting they were sold on the car they bought because of the features it offered. The survey quizzed car owners on the usage of specific features available to

them in their vehicle, such as tyre pressure monitoring systems, cruise control, skid control systems and parking sensors. One in five (19 per cent) surveyed claimed to use only one or two of the settings available to them regularly, while 45 per cent regularly use between just three and four settings. The research exposed a number of features that are commonly being left unused due to lack of understanding. Cruise control was the most likely to cause confusion, followed by eco settings and gadgets such as Bluetooth. Parking sensors and cameras were

the fourth most likely to leave car owners bemused, followed by high-tech heating and cooling systems. One in two (48 per cent) of those who admit to not using all of the features, cite not understanding how to use them as the reason for not doing so. Karen Rotberg, director at BookMyGarage. com, said: “With advanced vehicle technology on the rise, it’s important people are aware of the features their car offers as they can make the difference both financially and in terms of safety. “What is particularly interesting from the findings is so many car owners claim they

specifically chose the car they did because of its features, yet lots haven’t got to grips with them or don’t use them – which is a shame considering a car is one of the biggest investments an adult will make,” she added. “Although the features available in the latest vehicles are there to suit the needs of the modern day driver, they must be fully understood in order for the car to reach its full potential – and those who take the time required to acquaint themselves with these options will find they reap numerous benefits, whether it’s lower fuel bills, a more comfortable journey or a safer car.”

WHERE THE DRIVER COMES FIRST! I n an age where good value and customer service are not always high on the agenda, one truck stop definitely prides itself on offering the very best service, as well as giving that little bit extra to drivers. So if you’re nearing your break time anywhere near Junction 29 on the M1, pull into the Truckstop and you won’t be disappointed.

SAFE, SOUND & SECURE

As with all businesses in this day and age, security is of paramount importance. So to ensure drivers and their trucks and loads are safe and well-protected, the site is both fenced (currently being renewed as we go to print) and floodlit. Junction 29 wants its drivers to feel secure during their stay and well-rested for when they have to start driving again. The site is completely covered in CCTV cameras, which also work in with numberplate recognition and a bank of CCTV screens in the main office, which are constantly monitoring the site. Additionally, while drivers sleep, there is a security foot patrol covering the yard, giving complete peace of mind to drivers, ensuring they get a good night’s rest. To further assist in a good night’s sleep, many drivers will be pleased to know there is a ‘no noise’ policy between 10 pm and 6 am, which ensures refrigerated vehicles are turned off and does not allow trailer swaps or unnecessary vehicle movements.

FUEL

Junction 29 acts as a bunkering site with a cashless system, accepting all major fuel cards (Keyfuels, UK Fuels and Morgan Fuels). With safety in mind, all three fuel tanks have been replaced in the last 2-5 years. Additionally, Gasoil and AdBlue are both available on pump on each of the four sheltered fuel islands, which are fully signed.

GIVING VALUE

The first two hours of parking is free, then the parking overnight ‘parking’ options include different levels of voucher at £11.90 (including a £1.40 voucher), to £17.40 (including a £6.40 voucher), giving drivers choice and flexibility. There’s enough on-site parking for around 100 vehicles and is well maintained with both Tarmac and concrete. The shower facilities are certainly some of the best – clean, hot and very well maintained. The showers and toilets are not only equipped to the highest standards, but also cleaned all through the day. Additionally, there is a shop, truckwash and a bar. More of that in a future copy of Truckstop News!

GRUNDON’S LFs ARE CITY-BOUND

W

aste management and recycling firm Grundon has bolstered its range of specialist chassis with the delivery of a new Euro 6 DAF LF 220 FA with 12.6 m³ capacity rear-loader ‘K-Maxi’ body from refuse and recycling collection company NTM-GB, in Kidderminster. The 15-tonne chassis joins a further 43 DAF vehicles on Grundon’s waste collection operations in London. The vehicle enters service with an exacting specification to meet specific manoeuvrability demands in the capital, and to suit its ‘driveronly’ operation. “Our newest DAF acquisition was driven by the unique demands found operating in London,” said group fleet engineer, Stephen Townsend. “Our drivers face constant access issues with our larger vehicles. The smaller DAF Day cab provides good visibility for the driver, enhancing the awareness of vulnerable road users. This, along with the camera and side scan equipment, enhances the vehicle’s flexibility in town.” Townsend said Grundon runs a driver-only system, and the compact Day cab was spec’d to provide easy access for the driver. “Allison auto transmission and an exceptional turning circle provides outstanding manoeuvrability,” he added. “The new LF is able to negotiate the tightest areas.” The new DAF/NTM-GB combination provides further operational benefits, Townsend

said. “The 16-tonne chassis footprint is well-matched to the NTM-GB K-Maxi body, and down-rated to 15 tonnes, it still offers an impressive payload plus a reduced VED benefit,” he said. The 12.6 m³ capacity NTM-GB K-Maxi body comprises an NTM Barlift and features a pneumatic bin catcher bar, proportionally controlled hydraulic levers (for bin-lift, carriage plate and packer plate) and high-speed compaction. Grundon’s latest LF follows the delivery of a Euro 6 CF 460 FTG Space Cab earlier this year. The 6x2 tractor unit was specified for

dedicated use on the firm’s operations with Carbon8 – a company which uses Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT) to treat incinerator residues – including residues from the joint Grundon/Viridor Lakeside Energy from Waste (EfW) facility in Colnbrook near Slough. The Carbon8 process creates a carbonnegative aggregate from the incinerator residues and provides a sustainable solution to managing residual waste. DAF deliveries to Grundon over the summer, totalling 21 units, takes the Dutch marque’s presence in the company’s fleet to 180 units – or 75 per cent of its total fleet.

GAS GOES DUTCH AT SHELL’S NEW STATION

F

uel company Shell has announced the opening its third Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) truck refuelling station in the Netherlands. The station in Amsterdam is located in the western port area – a location with significant turnover from ships to trucks that distribute goods into the city. The unveiling of the new site follows soon after the official opening of Shell’s first two stations in the country in March and April 2015 in Rotterdam and Waalwijk. The new station has a capacity of 70,000 litres of LNG – enough to fuel around 200 trucks per day. “I am excited by the progress we have made, in a short time, developing a LNG refuelling network in the Netherlands with the opening of this new station,” said Giorgio Delpiano, general manager for Shell’s euroShell business. “We believe LNG is a viable fuel option for heavy-duty truck fleet owners.” Lauran Wetemans, general manager Downstream LNG, added: “We expect LNG will form a bigger part of the sustainable transport fuel mix in the future. Shell continues to work together with engine manufacturers, customers and policy makers to strengthen the business case for the use of LNG fuel in transport. As customer demand grows, we plan to open additional LNG sites in the Netherlands.”

AN Truck & Bus UK has reported hundreds of people have entered a special competition launched as part of the manufacturer’s 100-year anniversary. A limited-edition hardback book, which follows the story of commercial vehicle production throughout its 100-year history, was offered as the prize. The competition, which ran for around two weeks, was launched on Twitter and offered entrants the chance to win the keepsake book, which contains black-and-white and full-colour images charting the company’s past 100 years. “We were delighted with the response to this competition, as we believe it is a

great prize to mark an important part of MAN’s anniversary celebrations,” said Martin Pickering, MAN UK’s marketing communications manager. The book, entitled MAN – One Century written by Henning Stibbe and Matthias Georgi, celebrates 100 years of commercial vehicle production. The group itself though spans more than 250 years of heritage. The company was entered into the commercial register in the city of Nuremberg under the name ‘Lastwagenwerke M.A.N. -Saurer’ on June 21, 1915. Soon after this, the first M.A.N.-Saurer three-tonne truck left the factory on Lake Constance, followed shortly afterward by the first buses.

3200 lumens torch Manufacturer: Led Lenser Web: www.torchdirect.co.uk Price: £339.95

When you need to light up the night (or any dark place, for that matter), this powerful torch will get the job done – and then some. Boasting an astonishing 3200 lumens, this is one of the brightest handheld LED flashlights ever made. It comes with a rechargeable battery, and is made from aircraft-grade aluminium to ensure it’s lightweight and easy to carry around. It measures 41 cm long, and the beam from its seven ultra-bright LEDs can be focused up to 700 m. It’s pricey, but comes with a five-year warranty for peace of mind.

DVR-4HD dash cam Manufacturer: Snooper Web: www.snooper.co.uk Price: £149.99 (inc VAT)

Snooper has released a new dash cam system that combines a high-definition camera and integrated speed camera alerts. The DVR-4HD features forward collision warning, which alerts drivers when they get too close to vehicles in front, plus other objects in the road. Also included is high-def image and loop recording, motion detection, touch screen controls and a wide viewing angle.

Sanitising spray

Manufacturer: Opus Innovations Web: www.aquaint-uk.com Price: £2.49 (50 ml), £4.99 (500 ml) This new sanitising fluid is made of only water and a natural, harmless acid – though don’t think it doesn’t mean business, as it has been proven to kill 99.9 per cent of bacteria. Since it’s based on water, Aquaint doesn’t cause dry or cracked skin after repeated use, and it can also be used to sanitise cutlery, dropped fruit, wash salad – even as a mouthwash! The manufacturer calls it ‘a shower in a bottle’ – and it’s proven a good item to keep at hand in the cab.

Best service

Q

We run a fleet of 28 vehicles and of course we have a few claims and accidents each year. We have become increasingly unhappy with the service we receive from our insurers, especially if an accident was not our fault. However, in addition, we also feel our insurers all too often pay third-party claims when they should have been argued or for excessive costs. Have you any suggestions, or will we just have to accept this level of service as each year they do seem to be offering us the best premiums?

A

I think you should talk to an accident management company who will independently look after claims you make against third parties, as well as claims made against you. The cost of employing such a company should be around £25 per vehicle per annum – little more than an administration charge. The right company will more than save you their fees in future premiums, as it could of course be a matter of your current insurance company offering you the most competitive renewal premiums because your claims history is putting others insurers off offering you their best premiums. Large fleet operators and those who

self-insure will invariably employ their own claims management company, but there are plenty of instances where I recommend to my own clients they use the services of such companies. Please give me a call and I am sure I can find you a suitable claims management company who will provide you with the service you rightly deserve.

Tax cover

Q

I have read you can get insurance against a tax investigation. Can you please explain what this means?

A

A tax investigation can be very expensive to any business owner in terms of the time it may take to collate all of the information which may be required by HM Customs & Revenue. In addition, there will be additional accountancy fees which can run into several thousands of pounds – and even more in some circumstances. An insurance policy can be taken out to cover such costs, and it is a very inexpensive way of you protecting your business. There are some obvious exclusions, such as if you are knowingly breaking Inland Revenue rules or regulations or if you are aware an investigation is imminent. Your insurance provider should be able to offer you this

THE BIG READ

cover possibly built into your current business policies, or a stand-alone policy can be arranged.

Show time

Q

Having had my truck custom painted, I am going to take it to truck shows where it will be parked in the show display area. I am just wondering if I will need any special insurance for these shows?

A

Each show may have its own requirements in terms of Public Liability for exhibitors, and you will need to enquire with the organisers in this respect. In any event, you should let your motor and liability insurers know you will be displaying your vehicle at shows, and they will note this in your policy – quite possibly without imposing any extra charge. The issue of custom painting is an interesting area in itself, in that custom paintwork can sometimes cost many thousand pounds and this would not normally be included in your motor insurance. So again, you should advise your insurers of the cost and see if they are prepared to include the cost of repainting to the custom level in the event of accidental damage.
