WPI DRIVER RECKONS FH IS THE BEST DRESSED
C
heshire-based civil engineering, surfacing and site adoption management company WPI Group Ltd has taken delivery of a new 80-tonne GCW FH500 6x2 tag-axle tractor unit. Aside from good service from the firm’s local dealer, it appears the FH’s good looks helped seal the deal, according to WPI’s co-director, Steve Igoe. “It’s because both the Volvo product and the service we receive from Thomas Hardie Commercials is second to none,” he said. “Furthermore, in my opinion, the FH is also the best-looking truck on the road.” In addition to its 80-tonne plate, allowing operation under STGO CAT 2 rules, specification of the latest Globetrotter-cabbed FH to join the 12-strong Volvo fleet includes a 10-tonne rated front axle for optimum loading tolerance. The truck is also fitted with the VTO2514B 12-speed manual gearbox and the cab spec includes the latest Volvo sat nav, fridge-freezer and microwave. DuraBright polished aluminium wheels, chassis infill with a specially ‘nibbed’ surface finish, and white sideskirts, mirror arms and
heads contribute to the overall look of WPI’s new truck. The FH’s sideskirts feature a custom wrap depicting the early days of the company, and the FH also boasts 8 inch (203 mm) bore stainless-steel twin exhaust stacks, custom made by Adrian at Truckmax in Wisbech. Ten extra lights on two light bars, courtesy of Kelsa, are mounted on the roof and the cab front lower panel. A Kelsa lower light bar with seven LED markers is fitted to the front bumper. The FH is coupled to a new four-axle Faymonville N-4L-UV ‘Multimax’ trailer with two steering axles. The trailer features a hydraulically operated extending bed which increases the trailer’s overall load carrying width by 660 mm, from 2.54 to 3.2 m. Unusually - and a first for the trailer manufacturer - WPI specified the ‘Multimax’ with aluminium wheels. According to WPI, unladen weight of the tractor and trailer is 25,250 kg – which equates to a payload potential of 54,750 kg. The new FH will be maintained at Thomas Hardie Commercials overnight during the week on a Volvo Gold R&M contract.
Hey, good lookin’! FH is the “best-looking truck on the road,” according to WPI codirector Steve Igoe
RHA DEMANDS FRENCH MILITARY ACTION IN CALAIS
T
he Road Haulage Association has demanded the French government deploy their military to secure the chaos at Calais following chaotic developments at the port in which 50 migrants boarded a P&O vessel. As a result, ferry services were stopped and the Port was closed. “This shocking breach of security clearly shows the migrant mayhem in and around Calais is not being tackled,” said RHA chief executive, Richard Burnett. ”This latest episode has made the headlines, but the many incidents of attacks and intimidation faced by our British drivers on a daily basis are going unreported as, depressingly, they are now being regarded as routine.
“It is now time for the authorities to acknowledge and meet our demand for the French military be deployed to secure the Port and its approaches,” he added. “I am now publically calling on government to join my call for this decisive action.” Burnett said the time for debate has passed and immediate action was now required. “It is now surely only a matter of time before our worst fears become a reality and a UK-bound truck driver is killed,” he warned. The RHA said it was “extremely concerned” that despite the recent deployment of 1300 French riot police and gendarmerie at Calais, there are only approximately 300 operating at any one time
– meaning they are “massively outnumbered” by 18:1. In addition, the Association highlighted concerns that as the number of economic migrants, political refugees and asylum seekers congregating at the Port increases, the minimal effectiveness of the available security force is decreasing correspondingly. “Even if the entire security contingent was to be deployed at any one time, the ratio would still be hard-pressed to cope at 5:1,” Burnett said. “The level of security currently in place barely scratches the surface of the problem. It’s therefore hardly surprising that recent days have seen incidents of violence and attacks on trucks far worse than have been seen in recent months.”
FUSO IS NEW BUILDER’S MATE
T
hirteen years’ reliable, low-cost service from its previous Canter meant that when B&N Brickwork finally came to replace the 3.5-tonner, its successor would also bear the three-diamond FUSO logo. B&N proprietor John Benson said he was impressed with the latest-generation Canter, which features a new fuel-efficient engine, DUONIC automated transmission and more spacious, better-equipped cab. The building contractor from Compton, near Guildford, Surrey, purchased his new Canter 3C15 from the Heathrow branch of MercedesBenz dealer Rygor. The smallest Canter is built around a ladder frame chassis, so unlike most of its 3.5-tonne rivals, it offers the sturdy characteristics of a proper truck rather than a van. B&N Brickwork’s vehicle has a tipping body by Wessex Vehicle Services of Salisbury, which also fitted a large, lockable tool box immediately behind the cab. “I’d had my previous Canter since 2002,” Benson said. “It was a lovely little truck and certainly did me proud, covering just under 100,000 miles and never needing a new clutch. In fact, the only problem I ever had was the
result of a fault on the battery terminals, which compared to previous versions, as has torque – was easily and inexpensively resolved. 370 Nm is available over a broad engine speed “Another thing I really like about the Canter is range. its manoeuvrability,” he continued. “The lock is Meanwhile, in Eco Mode the Canter’s very good and because there’s no bonnet, you DUONIC automated dual clutch transmission can turn it on a sixpence. McLAUGHLAN MAKES TIME FOR T
Firm’s drivers were impressed with Range T during a week-long trial
S
cottish refrigerated haulage specialist McLaughlan Transport has taken delivery of three 44-tonne Renault Range T480.26 6x2 tractor units. The Range Ts, supplied by Renault Trucks Scotland with a full repair and maintenance contracts, operate out of McLaughlan Transport’s Perth depot – and are the first Renault trucks to join its 35-strong vehicle line-up. The high-specification Range Ts are coupled with specialist refrigerated trailers and are already on the road, working on temperature-controlled distribution for supermarkets and regional distribution centres throughout the UK and Europe. The firm said driver appeal was crucial, so introducing a new brand to the fleet needed careful handling. “We had a Range T on an extensive demo trial for a week, with five drivers given the truck and asked to provide feedback,” said company director, George McLaughlan. “All five were extremely complimentary and were really impressed with the vision and driving position – in fact, they thought it was such a good-looking cab that they wanted a truck each! “One of our drivers has recently returned from South West France and said he was particularly pleased with the performance and handling of the Range T on the journey,” he concluded.

Letter BREATH OF FRESH AIR After reading the readers’ letters in the January 19 issue of Truckstop News, it was a breath of fresh air to read Simon Burnikell’s letter on his positive view of the haulage industry after reading so many negatives. I recently lost my job in the Merchant Navy due to the current crisis in the oil industry. After many years of wanting to go trucking and attending Truckfests, I decided to do something about it.
I have recently completed the Theory and Hazard Perception tests, Modules for Driver CPC and passed the test for Category C, and I now intend on doing the Category C+E as soon as possible. I have funded all this off my own back and I am determined this is what I want to do for the rest of my working life. However, despite the welldocumented driver shortages, it’s difficult to find companies
that don’t insist on ‘experience’ – and who are willing to give new drivers like me the opportunity and training to make the haulage industry our career. The haulage industry does not get the recognition it deserves and compared to the industry I come from, it is a profession that has a lot to be positive about. Eric Tait Stromness
DRAWN TO THE JOB
I’m an artist based in Birmingham, and for the last five years I have been creating paintings inspired by the often overlooked landscape between the city and countryside – what some call the ‘edgelands’ – at night. I have largely been inspired to paint views of the M5 and M6 motorways that circle around the region, and the hidden world of canals, towpaths, and the transport depots found underneath. In my recent paintings, I have created a series of ‘portraits’ of the various trucks and articulated lorries parked up in lay-bys, side roads, or viewed from the canalside in the (often huge) transport depots and warehouses. In a recent exhibition of these paintings in Sheffield, gallery director Karen Sherwood said: “Lorries are painted with a sensitivity usually reserved for more romantic subject matter, which imbues these massive and powerful workhorses of heavy
industry with an unusual intimacy. These seemingly silent and still vehicles are bathed in twilight as though resting or abandoned to the night. The effect is not to make them ominous or threatening, but isolated and almost gentle.” A selection of my paintings were on exhibition at The Artrix Arts Centre, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire in January, and will also be exhibited at Wolverhampton
City Art Gallery later in May 2016. I’ve attached a few images of the paintings, and hope you and your readership might find them of interest. From my point of view, it would be interesting to hear any feedback from the trucking community, rather than an art audience, and to hear whether they have any resonance at all. Shaun Morris By email
RIP SHEILA FIELD (1955-2015)
Truckstop News reader Sheila Field was recently taken on her final journey to Blue Bell Hill Crematorium on a 1950 Leyland Beaver. Sheila (Lee) Jones was born in Lewisham just before Christmas in 1955. When Lee was six, the family moved to Tonbridge and she left school at 15 to work as a live-in nanny at a well-to-do house in West Malling. She went on to work for Medway Bonding and Reed Packing, where she met her future husband. Sadly, Lee’s husband walked out on his family, leaving Lee to bring up a four-year-old boy and an infant twin boy and girl on her own. With the support of her parents, Lee became a truck driver to provide for her children, driving a 7.5-tonne box van making deliveries on behalf of Nightfreight in the Tonbridge area. One cold night in January 2001, Lee was reversing down a remote farm road when the rigid skidded on ice and ended up with one wheel in a ditch. NY Recovery in Snodland attended the scene of the accident and Steve Field pulled the rigid out of the ditch. The following day, Steve phoned Lee to check she was suffering no ill effects from her mishap. Steve invited Lee out for a drink, they fell in love and got married. Lee’s delivery area increased and her days got longer, so she took a job using a 7.5-tonne rigid to deliver new Volvo cars. Lee became ill and cancer was diagnosed; however, she worked for another six months. When she became too ill to work, Lee planned her own funeral. Her wish was to be put in a cardboard coffin and taken to the crematorium in an old van. Lee purchased her own cardboard coffin from the internet and helped to decorate it with butterflies. After Lee had passed away, the funeral director expressed concern about securing the cardboard coffin in a van, but Lee’s daughter, Kim, said: “Mum ain’t going out in an old van, she is going out in style.” Lee is deeply missed by her husband Steve, her children Jason, Kym and Aaron, her step children Kaleigh, Bethany and Gavin, six grandchildren and all of her friends. Despite only getting one season, this series follows the drivers of Heavy Haulage Australia (HHA) as they shift some of the biggest loads in the country across demanding terrain. Operating under the close scrutiny of demanding boss Jon Kelly, the drivers put their skills to the test on a range of jobs – and if you can get past the bombast, there’s some spectacular trucking on show here.

In this new book, author Mick Rennison reflects on a long career in the road transport industry and ruminates on the (often hilarious) trials and tribulations he encountered along the way. Charting Mick’s career from when he passed his test in a Atkinson Borderer in 1974, through a varied list of missions which took him all across Europe and Scandinavia, shifting everything from music shows and heavy plant to supermarket groceries, the tales are never less than entertaining. But they can also be quite eye-opening, such as his account of thwarting hijackers, suffering delays resulting from a driver strike in Spain, and surviving a vehicle blow-over due to gale-force winds. Now retired, Rennison’s frank, forthright and humorous account of his life on the road is a great read. Rating:

Much better than you might anticipate, this album is smooth, it flows, it’s inoffensive, and all-in-all it’s pretty good background music you’ll not find too irritating. Yes, it’s budget fair – and yes, we can spot the ‘included to keep costs down’, don’t-quite-fit tracks that appear a little too often – but at under £5, who really cares?

ACCIDENT
SPOT
I
n the last issue Steven Hinchliffe looked at a situation experienced by a reader of Truckstop News, whose accident resulted in a claim for personal injury compensation. Part 1 looked at the initial steps taken.
You will remember that my client, Mr K B Abbott, had been preparing a trailer to take a load of timber, and when trying to position a bolster and pins he slipped and fell onto the trailer bed. A claim was made to his employers and eventually their insurers’ representatives confirmed that responsibility for the accident was accepted, but alleged that Mr Abbott was 25% to blame for what had happened. CASE STUDY - DEFECTIVE WORK EQUIPMENT - PART 2 The insurers’ representatives required the 25% reduction in his compensation because they alleged Mr Abbott had failed to tell his

employers about the defective pins and they had not therefore been given the opportunity to fix them before the accident, and that in any event it was Mr Abbott’s decision to kick the pins. It appeared that the position was being falsely represented by the employers as Mr Abbott had repeatedly told two of his managers about the problem and they had done nothing about it. Also, how else was he to get the job done? You can imagine the response he would have got from his employers if he had simply refused to work with the defective pins! We had to constantly chase the insurers’ representatives for confirmation that the allegation of contributory fault had been dropped and for them to make an offer to settle the claim. The delays continued and we therefore told them that Mr Abbott would have no option but to issue Court proceedings if the matter was not resolved quickly. Finally the representatives admitted they had misplaced the papers we had sent them, so we had to provide a further copy. Between them and the employers they were making a total mess of the case, which resulted in our costs increasing and which ultimately the employers or their insurers would have to pay. At no point did the insurers’ representatives withdraw the allegation of contributory negligence, but after some negotiation the claim finally settled on a full value basis. If this had not been achieved we would have advised Mr Abbott to go ahead with Court proceedings and seek a full award of compensation. As with all of our clients, we made sure that Mr Abbott had legal expenses insurance cover to protect him against having to pay any Court related costs himself should the unexpected have happened and the claim gone badly wrong at a trial. Mr Abbott accepted £5,650 total compensation in respect of both the injuries he suffered and his accident related financial losses (which mainly represented lost earnings). Once the settlement was concluded, we then sent details of the costs and expenses we had incurred in dealing with
Steven Hinchliffe the claim to the representatives, and fortunately an acceptable figure was agreed and paid without too much difficulty. There is an important point to note about this case. At the time of the accident an employer was automatically liable to compensate an employee injured due to defective work equipment, whether that equipment was badly maintained or not. However, since October 2014 an injured employee now has to show that the employer should have known about the defect, either by discovery during routine maintenance work or upon specific notification, such as when given by an employee. In theory, it is now more difficult to succeed with a claim involving defective work equipment. However, we have not found this to be so in practice, as most of the claims for accidents of this type that we have taken on are caused by equipment that is known to be faulty and the employer has simply done nothing about it. This month, I received a query from a reader regarding my recent article on travelling to and from in-scope vehicles. The question is reproduced below: 11 - Hinchcliffes Solicitors - Accident Spot Feature in Truckstop News - Issue 361 - half page.indd 1 ‘I read with interest your article in Truckstop News (Issue 359, dated January 19, 2016). I have a question in relation to this that I hope you can clarify. ‘I am employed by a company as a professional salaried HGV driver, normally driving vehicles from their operating centre. However, when there is none of this work, I am sub-let to a local employment agency as an HGV driver. ‘I am then tasked by the agency to third-party tasks, where I am required by my employer to travel to and from in-scope vehicles within 25 miles of my home address, to take them over and drive them. ‘Given I receive no remuneration for this task from the agency or the third-party, and therefore remain directly in the employ of my employer, and the in-scope vehicle is not at my home address or my employer’s operational centre, would I be correct in assuming the advice given in the article still applies? ‘In essence, that while
travelling to and from an in-scope vehicle, I am satisfying an obligation towards my employer and therefore am in fact carrying out other work, which should be recorded as duty time.’ First of all, this is a response which deals with the generic points. I cannot give specific advice on the basis of an email, letter etc, but I will try and look at the wider points. As the reader has identified, the issue for drivers in this position is whether the work through the driver agency – ie, picking up the in-scope vehicles – needs to be recorded. EC Regulation 561/2006 at Article 9 (2) and (3) says: 2. Any time spent travelling to a location to take charge of a vehicle falling within the scope of this Regulation, or to return from that location, when the vehicle is neither at the driver’s home nor at the employer’s operational centre where the driver is normally based, shall not be counted as a rest or break unless the driver is on a ferry or train and has access to a bunk or couchette. 3. Any time spent by a driver driving a vehicle which falls outside the scope of this Regulation to or from a vehicle which falls within the scope of this Regulation, which is not at the driver’s home or at the employer’s operational
centre where the driver is normally based, shall count as other work. So the question seems to revolve around whether this is picking up at the driver’s home 28/01/2016 or at the employer’s operational centre. In this scenario, it would appear at first glance that it may be neither, because the driver is not taking charge of a vehicle from home and not employed by the operator of the vehicle which is being picked-up. However, many agency or temporary arrangements exist in compliance with the legislation. The European Commission has issued Guidance Note 2 which states the following: “There is no differentiation as to the character of the employment contract of the driver. Thus these rules apply to both permanent drivers and drivers employed by a temporary employment undertaking hiring out of labour. For a ‘temporary driver’ the ‘employer’s operational centre’ means an operational centre of an undertaking using the services of that driver for its road transport (‘user undertaking’), and not the head office of the ‘temporary employment undertaking’.” For any driver in this position, it makes sense to clarify the issue with the agency or employer.

BROSCOMBE LIGHTENS UP WITH DAF CRANE TRUCK Broscombe said its new crane truck has enabled it to take on significant new business
S
E Broscombe has taken delivery of a new DAF CF 8x2 with mounted crane to service new business opportunities in the heavier lift market. “The new HMF 60 tonnes/m crane lifts 10 tonnes at truck side and 3.3 tonnes up to 14.6 m away, which lets us talk to customers about a lot more work than when we only had a lighter HIAB unit,” said Broscombe’s operations director, Dan Brooke. “The real difference, though, is the CF is so much lighter than comparable quality trucks that, even with the big new crane, we can get a genuine 10-tonne payload on it. Its lift and steer axles also give us terrific manoeuvrability on building and construction sites. “We’d been having to farm a lot of heavier work out – now we don’t,” he said. Alongside general haulage work, Broscombe has long-standing contracts that take it onto sites when major food distribution operations need back-up boiler and generator installations to cope with emergencies and short-term refurbishment works. Other recent work included moving large dust-extraction units for a major luxury car manufacturer, while having the DAF CF specified
for ADR compliance has also won the firm new work carrying IBCs of treatment chemicals onto sewage farms. Based in Huddersfield, the company does its own service and maintenance work on site. Dan Brooke himself is a time-served DAF apprentice fitter, and the firm employs a fully trained, fulltime fitter in its own workshops. “We’ve run DAFs for many a year; for us, they’re tried and tested,” Brooke said. ”Fuel is always good and they never miss a beat. We reckon they’re among the best rigids you can buy – if not the very best. “Our new CF with its increased payload is already good for us, but its flexibility will be even better shortly. The chassis was specified as a drawbar, and we’re genuinely excited about the added business opportunities this will bring when it is properly operational with a new trailer currently on order.” The company accessorises its trucks to high level, with items such as TVs, fridges, microwaves and other comforts fitted as appropriate to the work being done. The operator has a significantly long-service driver workforce, the majority working for the company for a good many years.
RULES RELAXED
T
he EU Commission has granted a further relaxation of the EU driver’s hours regulations for HGV operators forced to take alternative routes as a result of the continued closure of the Forth Road Bridge. “This is a common-sense decision and one that the industry will welcome”, said RHA director for Scotland, Martin Reid. “The additional cost of the continued closure to hauliers, already working to very tight margins, has been extremely high.” Reid added that one of the RHA’s longstanding members reported the detour to cross from one side of the river to the other
added an extra hour each way in journey time alone, and approximately £90 in additional fuel costs. “The added fuel costs are really beginning to bite,” Reid said. “Scotland is economically dependent upon an efficient supply chain network. The decision by the operators of the Bridge was made on safety grounds and we welcome the speed at which the problem and subsequent repairs were addressed. “However, we would urge that the further strengthening work to enable hauliers to resume their use of the Bridge are completed as quickly as possible.”

new Volvo FH16-750 6x2 tractor unit has entered service with the 18-strong fleet of Preston-based Richard King Haulage Ltd. The firm, which celebrated 26 years in business in 2015, runs an intensive 24/7 operation serving international brands and customers across the UK in a number of diverse sectors, such as refrigerated work. The company said the majority of its deliveries are timed, so reliability is paramount. The new top-power FH is driven by Paul St John, who has driven and operated many makes and type truck over his career. He spends about 80 per cent of his driving time on container haulage duties out of various East Coast ports to all points West and South, with occasional forays north and across the border into Scotland. His FH16-750 is expected to cover around 160,000 km in its first year in service. The truck operates at or near the 44-tonnes maximum gross for about 75 per cent of the time, and Paul said he spends four nights out in the cab every week. The company acquired its first Volvo, a newseries FH500 6x2 tractor unit, in 2014. That vehicle, which is double-shifted, has returned an average of 9 mpg.
See website for full details.
WEIR RECKONS TGS IS MAN FOR THE JOB T The FH16-750 is equipped with the VEB+ engine retarder, I-Shift gearbox, Adaptive Cruise Control and I-See fuel-saving software. Seven hundred litres of fuel is carried in twin tanks. “With the FH, Volvo has really paid attention to looking after the driver,” said Paul. “Visibility is excellent and the Adaptive Cruise Control is brilliant. I-Shift is great for the driver as you’re left to concentrate on what’s going on around you. It’s a proper two-pedal set-up and is effortless to use. I certainly wouldn’t want to go back to a manual or the auto ’boxes in some other makes of truck, which still have a clutch pedal. “The electric parking brake with auto-release is much easier to use than a manual park brake, and the I-Roll feature in I-Shift helps to save fuel,” he added. “The Volvo Engine Brake retarder is so good, I can drive safely – fullyloaded – down ‘Windy Hill’ on the M62 without having to touch the brakes. “All in all, in my opinion, Volvo is light-years ahead when it comes to looking after the driver,” he concluded. Richard King Haulage’s new FH16-750 was supplied by Thomas Hardie Commercials at Preston and is maintained on a Repair & Maintenance contract there. Thomas Hardie Commercial Vehicle Solutions at Chorley fitted the additional fuel tank.
hree new MAN TGS hookloaders are on the road servicing the needs of the Midlands independent recycling and waste management firm, Weir Waste. The vehicles – provided through MAN’s TrucksToGo initiative – are replacements in Weir Waste’s 50-strong fleet and will be operating throughout the West Midlands, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. They are joining the fleet following on from the success of a MAN TGX 26.440 6x2 tractor unit which was brought in by Weir Waste MD, Danny Weir, late last year. “We brought in the MAN TGX as an addition to our fleet and to help with our increasing workload late last year and like how it has
performed,” he said. “I have also spoken to a friend in the industry who runs MANs and I have had a look at those and asked his opinion of them. MAN has put together a good package. “The price and service package made it an attractive proposition for Weir Waste and we will certainly be looking at the possibility of more MANs as we replace our fleet.” MAN sales executive, Jon-Paul Allenza, added: “We supplied Weir Waste with the TGX at a time when there was a pressing need for one in the business, and we are equally pleased this has been so well received that Danny has chosen MAN again when he looked to replace three vehicles in his fleet.”
Weir’s TGS was supplied via MAN’s TrucksToGo scheme
GOVERNMENT BACKS DRIVER ROAD SAFETY INITIATIVE
T
he government has thrown its weight behind life-saving road safety initiative Driver First Assist (DFA) after roads
DFA scheme aims to teach first aid skills to truck drivers
minister Andrew Jones pledged to back the non-profit-making organisation, which trains professional drivers to manage accident scenes and give first aid. The minister gave his support and offered government assistance during a meeting in Parliament organised by Transport Select Committee member and Freight Transport Group chairman, Rob Flello, and DFA’s founder, David Higginbottom. The DFA said its estimates suggest 46 per cent of road fatalities would be prevented and about £1.5 billion per year saved if prompt accident management and first aid was available at road accident scenes. It pointed out that although the target ambulance emergency response time is eight
minutes, a casualty with a blocked airway will die in approximately four minutes. The DFA also cites evidence showing it can cost up to £62,000 an hour to close a motorway. “The government’s endorsement is a massive boost for DFA and strengthens the support it has already received from the three emergency services, the NHS and others,” Flello said. “It will go a very long way to helping the charitable organisation achieve its longterm aim of giving thousands of lorry, van, car fleet and bus drivers the skills they need to save lives in the crucial first few minutes after a road accident.” Other backers of the initiative include Skills for Logistics, the transport industry’s training

rittany Ferries has chartered a vessel to carry freight between Poole and Bilbao, northern Spain. The vessel, Pelican, has the capacity for around 100 unaccompanied trailers and 12 drivers and began service with the company in early February. Pelican comes from shipping company Maritime Nantaise and will operate two roundtrips per week. The charter, which includes crew, is for 12 months – but with the option of extension. “Freight activity to and from the United Kingdom is undergoing a period of strong growth, particularly the unaccompanied market,” said Simon Wagstaff, Brittany Ferries’ freight director. “We see this on a daily basis in
Government is hoping schemes will improve safety for all road users
ork has started on more than 40 schemes as part of a £100 million package designed to make it easier for cyclists to cross motorway junctions and use major A-roads. Highways England is set to delivery 200 projects across the country over the next five years after the government set up a £100 million dedicated fund for cycling in its Road Investment Strategy. More than 40 schemes have now begun and are set to be completed by this spring, while work will continue on other projects between now and 2021. The schemes are aimed at providing new, safer lanes which keep cyclists separate from

other road-users. “Our investment in cycling infrastructure will make cycling safer and ultimately cut congestion on the roads,” said transport minister, Andrew Jones. The first phase of the programme will see cycle lanes and crossings created or improved at nine motorway junctions. New cycle lanes, crossings and signs will also be installed on major A-roads across England. They include improvements at 11 locations along a 2.5-mile stretch of the A12 in Lowestoft, Suffolk, to provide a high-quality cycle route through the town; a new footbridge over the A27 in Kingsham in Hampshire; and new signs on a 12-mile stretch of the A590 in Cumbria.
the garages of our vessels, especially on those operating to and from Spain. Our charter of Pelican will help us meet growing demand from freight customers and free up more garage space on other ships.” Last year, Brittany Ferries reported a 20 per cent increase in freight traffic across all routes. 2016 also appears to have started strongly, and the company said it hopes greater capacity will drive even more business through Poole. “There is a very limited charter market for this type of vessel and we were delighted to find a cost-effective vessel on the French International Register,” Wagstaff added. “This will allow us to operate effectively, but also to balance the books in this important area of our activity.”
Brittany Ferries hopes Pelican will ease freight pressure on its other services

FLEET BOOST FOR DRIVERS DIRECT
A
fter launching the logistics division less than six months ago, Drivers Direct – a provider of temporary and permanent drivers to the transport and distribution sector – has added a further nine vehicles to its fleet to cope with growing demand. The division was launched in 2015 to provide a complete logistics solution of vehicles and LGV drivers to the industry. After identifying the need for more vehicles, the company selected Renault as its choice of supplier based on the French manufacturer’s vehicle range and commitment to meet Drivers Directs’ requirements. “We’re delighted with how well the first six months have been for our new logistics division and to be able to grow the business with an additional nine vehicles,” said managing director, Gethin Roberts. “The new division is an important step forward for the business as it helps us offer a complete logistics package and service the demand for our clients.” Headquartered in Royton, near Oldham, Drivers Direct Logistics will offer clients access to more than 20 different vehicles and drivers. The location was selected due to easy access to the northern motorway network. Drivers Direct has also announced the first five people to spot the new vehicles and

TRAINING FIRM DETAILS DRIVER MATCH SCHEME
E
ast Yorkshire company TIR Training has launched a Driver Match scheme in a bid to tackle the national shortage of LGV drivers. The Beverley-based firm has introduced the scheme which aims to match local employers with newly qualified drivers who are looking for a job as a truck driver. TIR said it’s aiming to streamline the process of filling gaps in operators’ driver workforce by encouraging employers to contact them when they are looking for a new driver, with the aim of providing them with a quick and easy way of recruiting. TIR Training said new drivers are also able to take advantage of the scheme by asking the company to match them with suitable employers at no cost to them. “The driver crisis has been well documented for some time now, and here at TIR we have a steady stream of individuals who train with us looking to get in to logistics,” said Shah Wright, managing director of TIR Training. “While they are training with us, we will identify their key skills and match them with an employer looking for those specific skills.” TIR said it was looking to make the process as simple and straightforward as possible, with a dedicated Driver Match team answering queries within 48 hours. “Throughout their training with us, drivers are assessed on their attitude and suitability,” Wright added. “Only those who we feel are of a high standard are passed to companies who are feeling the strain through a lack of drivers.”

T
he Knights of Old Group has won the contract to provide UK-wide distribution to Povoas Packaging, which provides polythene packaging to industries throughout the UK, Ireland and Europe. BYC’S ADR EXPANSION
B
rian Yeardley Continental (BYC) has reported continued rapid growth in its movement of ADR cargo in 2015, with movements of dangerous goods from the UK to Europe up from six million kilos in 2014 to a ‘staggering’ 14.8 million kilos over the same period in 2015. “Our commitment to offering
our chemical clients a quality, reliable and safe service has really shown by our improved sales in 2015,” said BYC quality director, Sarah Hopper. “Plus, with the tighter controls at the ports and throughout Europe, this has meant fewer hauliers want to carry ADR due to the fines and consequences if you don’t do it right.”

R
enault Trucks UK is creating an additional 30 apprenticeship placement this year following a rise in applications from young people wishing to embark on a career in the commercial vehicle industry. “An apprenticeship is a great way for young people to start their career and we are delighted to be able to support an additional 30 recruits keen to take this route, which will bring the total number of apprentices in the programme to 97,” said Renault Trucks’ UK commercial director, Nigel Butler.
“Our structured apprentice programme gives young people an opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications, earning while they learn,” he added. “Many of today’s graduates will go on to senior management positions, whether in technical service, parts management or vehicles sales.” The announcement followed the Renault Trucks UK Apprentice Awards 2014 and 2015, held recently at Chesford Grange, Kenilworth, which marked the achievements of apprentices graduating in both years.

The big news recently has been that we can now offer work to younger HGV drivers over 23 if they have held their licence for a year and have driven 90 days in the last two years. One of our big retail clients is now offering this great opportunity to drivers who before would struggle to be accepted. We offer drivers many incentives to work to work for us, such as help with finding accommodation and maximising their income. There are also opportunities for Class 2 drivers to be trained up to Class 1 with a job lined up when you pass. We are also looking for full and part-time HGV 1 drivers who want to earn good money all year round, but who are flexible to be able to drive on various contracts if need be. As testament to us, many of our drivers have been with us for more than six years, so we are doing something right and many new drivers come to us via referral, which is very pleasing. January has seen the FTA report that the UK is currently facing a driver shortage of around 45,000 which poses a real threat as the freight and logistics industry plays a vital role in supporting the economy. With Driver Recruitment continuing to steel the headlines in the industry, Encore Driving continues to work tirelessly to attract and retain quality drivers across the UK with our bespoke driver schemes which were introduced in 2015. Our Driver training program was put in to place to help drivers reach their potential and work towards upskilling their license whilst earning their way to success. We have already seen a huge demand from a relatively new pool of drivers that are looking to pursue a career in HGV driving and were encouraged by the opportunities available to them as they progress, in particular the ability to receive regular work throughout the year. As well as tackling the driver shortage through an attractive training scheme we have also introduced the encore ‘Approved Driver Scheme’ to the market. This scheme is designed to reward our most reliable and dedicated drivers through performance related rewards. These contain things such as free driver training, gifts, being offered better positions and also an enhanced CV. The overall goal is to have our Approved Driver scheme as a recognised driver qualification sought after by our ever growing client base. Wayne Stroud, Divisional Recruitment Manager at Encore said, “It’s our mission in 2016 to really nail down what drivers are looking for in today’s competitive market. We have invested a lot of money but more importantly time in to addressing the current driver crisis and what we can do to support the future of the industry”.
