CONCRETE FIRM URGES INDUSTRY TO ATTRACT MORE FEMALE DRIVERS

S

outh West building materials supplier Hopkins Concrete is urging the haulage industry to find ways of encouraging more females into a driving career to help solve the severe driver shortage. Hopkins Concrete currently employs one female driver, but said it is advertising for new drivers and is hoping to add to this number in the near future. Sarah Blake, mixer truck driver for Hopkins Concrete, said driving is a great job for her and urged more women to look into training as a driver. “I have never really considered any other job,” she said. “My dad was a truck driver and I used to love it when he drove me around in his cab. It seemed a natural thing when I left school to get into driving. “My first job was driving refuse trucks. This was good as a starting point, but I much

prefer working for Hopkins. “Everyone is so friendly, from the other drivers to the office staff. I guess that’s what comes of it being a family-run firm, but there is a very supportive ethos. “Another attraction is Hopkins offers excellent job training opportunities, and that is very helpful with the ongoing CPC training drivers now have to do under new regulations.” Hopkins said it had invested heavily in improving working conditions for its drivers, with particular focus on purchasing new Mercedes-Benz trucks for its fleet with improved vehicle specifications, including softer cab suspension, softer and better supported driver seats, increased space in the cab, and different spec tyres. The firm said some female drivers cited

the “rude” attitude of some members of the public, as well as their male peers, as a challenge. Although the problem needs to be addressed, Sarah said her experiences had been positive. “I have actually never experienced chauvinism in my role. I am lucky, as all the drivers at Hopkins have accepted me without a second thought.” Hopkins Concrete director, Nathan Hopkins, added: “We are hoping to encourage more female drivers into the company, but it really needs a UK-wide push from schools, colleges and the UK government, as well as the wider public, to promote truck driving as a suitable trade for female and male school-leavers. “Only this way will we be able to make inroads into the issue of driver shortages being felt across the industry,” he concluded.

RPL GROWS FLEET WITH RANGE Ts

M

ilton Keynes-based distribution specialist RPL Logistics, part of the Bedfords Group, has taken delivery of six Range T tractor units from Renault Trucks Chiltern. The 44-tonne Range T480.26s join RPL’s 32-strong fleet for UK-based general haulage which includes newspapers, consumables, liquid inks, food and drinks, DIY and building supplies. The Range Ts are supplied by BRS Ltd on a full three-year, 160,000 km pa contract which covers road tax, tyres and on-site repair and maintenance. “We’ve had a long relationship with Renault Trucks Chiltern that spans over 15 years; they listen to our requirements and are committed to providing reliable trucks together with firstclass back-up service,” said RPL’s operations director, Danny Wright. “We’ve been running

Renault Magnums for many years and have found them to be great long-range trucks. “Business is good, so we were looking for replacement and additional vehicles for our fleet and the new Range T was the natural choice.” Each Range T is specified with the optional ‘Comfort Pack’, which includes fridge, alloy wheels, automatic emergency braking system and lane departure warning system. Driver appeal was also important, Wright said. “I really liked the look of the Range T and so did our drivers. The cab layout is good and the storage is excellent. The feedback from our drivers is all positive and they particularly like the overall comfort and safety features which make their lives easier and more productive.” The new trucks are serviced on RPL Logistics’ premises at weekends to minimise downtime.

WARISA WEIGHS THE BENEFITS OF NEW ACTROS QUINTET

W

igan-based operator Warisa Distribution has taken delivery of five new Actros 2548 tractor units from Liverpool dealer Roanza Truck & Van. The trucks are equipped with Company said Actros beat rival trucks on fuel and driver appeal during recent trials

range-topping, flat-floored GigaSpace cabs, 476 bhp straight-six engines and PowerShift 3 automated transmissions. Warisa Distribution works for lift and access equipment manufacturer JLG, a

division of the US-based Oshkosh Corporation, and specialises in moving plant and machinery such as scissor lifts and telescopic booms on low-loader trailers. UK-bound products are collected at Liverpool docks by Warisa’s trucks and transported to JLG’s pre-delivery inspection and preparation centre in Middleton, Greater Manchester, before onward transit to end users all over Britain. Warisa also transports machines from JLG’s manufacturing plant in Belgium to customers across mainland Europe. On behalf of international breakdown agencies, the operator also handles the repatriation of UK-based cars and motorhomes which break down on trips to the Continent. “Our drivers can be away for weeks at a time on long-distance runs, so comfortable, well-designed cabs with lots of storage space are very important,” said managing director, Warren Myers. “The GigaSpace provides just that, with bags of room and very high-quality fittings. It’s a very ‘liveable’ environment, and the level

of standard safety equipment is highly impressive. “I’m happy too, because the trucks are averaging 8 mpg,” he added. “In an application like ours, which entails pulling some decidedly un-aerodynamic loads, that’s an excellent figure and represents a marked improvement on the vehicles they’ve replaced. “The Actros haven’t missed a beat so far, but I also take comfort from knowing that should the worst happen, MercedesBenz provides top-quality back-up across Europe, so we’ll never be left stranded.” Warisa chose its new trucks following a competitive trial involving a vehicle by a rival manufacturer, in which the firm said the Merc came out top on both fuel efficiency and driver appeal. The Actros are fitted with chrome Kelsa lightbars, wheel trims, sideskirts and air horns. Family-owned Warisa Distribution has been trading for over 30 years. In addition to its new Actros, the company runs a 26-tonne rigid with Hiab crane, and three 3.5-tonne vans for urgent deliveries of small consignments.

Letter NEW SCANIA R SPOTTED? Is this a new Scania concept or prototype, by any chance? Driving to a local country park to take my daft Springer Spaniel for an early Sunday morning walk, this is what I saw parked up at the road side. At first glance, I would have taken this as the older-generation Scania tractor unit looking at the radiator grille, but curiosity got the better of me because this looked different in other ways too. There are no badges or markings of any description, but this is definitely a Scania of some description. But anyway, I couldn’t help but take a picture! I spotted it on Sunday, February 28 on the M1, J29a at the Markham Vale Industrial Estate. David Bagshawe Service manager RBM Agricultural Ltd

DRIVERLESS DANGERS With driverless lorry funding announced in the Budget, the automotive and security industries should be looking to join forces to protect our connected vehicles from emerging cyber-threats before the vehicles become widely available to consumers and the risks increase. The current mechanisms for realtime tracking, detection, analysis and resolution of cyber-threats for computers and mobile devices will not be enough on their own. If driverless vehicles aren’t designed with security in mind, we could see them being disabled, destroyed or hijacked – with disastrous consequences. Rather

than waiting for the first attack to take place, we have to find and stop these vulnerabilities now before the technology is integrated extensively into trucks or consumer vehicles. Everyone involved in the creation of a connected vehicle – including policy makers – needs to work together to ensure these points of weakness are dealt with before connected vehicles become commonplace on our drives and on our roads. This means analysing all the different vectors that could result in cyberattacks, accidents or even fraudulent maintenance of the vehicle. At the same time, owners of next-

generation cars must understand that threats that have so far been specific to the computer world now apply to connected vehicles. Another story that reflects the everpresent vulnerabilities of IT systems is that of pirates that managed to hack into a shipping company, allowing them to determine the location of valuable cargo before intercepting and hijacking vessels in the targeted attacks. This is a clear example of the potential dangers of increased connectivity. David Emm, Principal security researcher, Kaspersky Lab

VAN MAN!

Here are some pictures of one of my Dad’s vans, which he pilots across Europe (Italy, Greece, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Poland etc etc). It’s recently been posted on Facebook and received lots of likes and comments, with people saying they would hang up their HGV licence to drive it! My Dad is over 6 ft tall and can stand up to get dressed in this Sprinter. It also shows big is not always best for comfort and profit. The sleeping quarters were recently changed, with the work completed by Ben’s Cabinets in Holland. My Dad, Simon Scrivin, doesn’t know I’ve sent these in, so he’d be very surprised to see this in print! He used to operate six artics across Europe, but now runs just one artic – a Volvo FH4 – and Sprinter vans, as he says there’s more money in the vans now. This van came third at the Wessex Truck Show last year with the old bed in, before this conversion, and it does over

100,000 miles a year. My Dad can be away from 1-3 weeks at a time across Europe. He also has a ’14-plate Sprinter, which he got on August 30, 2014 with 5000 miles on the clock. That van has now done 200,000 miles. Daniel Scrivin By email

ACCIDENT

SPOT

I

n the last issue Steven Hinchliffe looked at a situation experienced by a reader of Truckstop News, whose accident resulted in a claim for personal injury compensation. Part 1 looked at the initial steps taken.

You will remember that my client, Mr M Maclening of Hastings was attempting to put the roof support of his curtain sided trailer back in place, when his right ring finger was severed at the joint below the nail. A claim was made to the company who had provided him with the trailer on the basis that it was defective, but their insurers disclosed inspection records in support of their assertion that there was nothing wrong with it. CASE STUDY - TRUCK DRIVER’S ACCIDENT CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE TRAILER - PART 2 While waiting for the insurers to give their view on liability we got on with obtaining Mr Maclening’s medical records and then arranged for

ADVERTORIAL

In this issue Steven Hinchliffe of the professional drivers’ “go to” Personal Injury specialists Hinchliffes Solicitors (see their advert on the front page) considers

“THE OUTCOME FOR THE INJURED TRUCK DRIVER” him to be examined by an A&E Consultant. The report provided by the Consultant confirmed that Mr Maclening had suffered a crush injury to the tip of his finger, in which his nail and some pulp had been removed leaving the bone protruding. He immediately had an operation to trim the bone. It was the Consultant’s opinion that he was more or less pain free within a month of the accident, but the numbness experienced at the tip of the finger would be permanent. His finger was also now shorter than before. During this time we had also been gathering details of Mr Maclening’s accident related financial losses, which we set out in a written schedule. We sent this and the medical report to him for approval, and at the same time gave him our view on the level of compensation he could expect to receive, providing we were able to establish liability in his favour. With his consent, we then sent copies of all the relevant documents to the insurers with settlement proposals. Even then, there was no movement by the insurers towards any acceptance of liability for the accident and they seemed content to do very little to resolve the case. We had repeatedly requested various additional documents that should have recorded how the trailer had been maintained, but these requests were largely ignored. It is not uncommon for us to ask a Defendant’s insurer for information and documents that never actually materialise. To avoid having to provide them, they often suggest that our requests are unnecessary or unreasonable, even though the rules governing Personal Injury claims require them to co-operate with us. When this situation arises it normally means that the information and documents we are seeking would help to prove our client’s claim. On the other hand, if an insurer has anything that might assist in defeating a claim they send it to us straight away! We continued to place pressure on the insurers, which resulted in them producing certain information, but it was by no means complete. Although they were still not inclined to compensate Mr Maclening for his

Steven Hinchliffe injury, there did seem to be some softening of their approach and we persevered with our requests for full disclosure of documents. Mr Maclening was very patient and we kept him up to date with what was happening. In the end we were able to settle his claim at a figure close to our initial best scenario estimate. Although the insurers continued to resist accepting any fault, in reality they suspected they would lose if the Court had to become involved and Mr Maclening recovered £4,000 in total, of which £3,650 represented compensation for his injury. Despite the time taken to resolve the claim he was delighted with the result and when I asked if he was happy to provide a quote about his experience of using my firm’s services he replied as follows:“Very good and pleased to use your company, adding that all possible contact and information was of top class” All of my Truckstop News articles appear on my firm’s website at www. hinchliffes.co.uk in the “Latest News” blog link on the homepage. A such communications, a failure to be so person is not, however, guilty of an offence available is a factor which may make it

very difficult to raise this defence. It is expected that an individual will have due diligence in providing for and dealing with their post if away from the address. The courts have held that the offence does not require knowledge on the defendant’s part that they were under an obligation to provide the specified information. Under the Criminal Procedure Rules service could be effected by post, even if the defendant had not in fact received the notice. The burden will be on the defendant to satisfy the magistrates that it was not reasonably practicable for the defendant to have given the information and he failed to do that. A defendant did not have a defence under s.172(7)(b) merely by virtue of the fact they had no knowledge the notices were sent. However in an appropriate case, a defendant might be able to show in such circumstances that it was not reasonably practicable for them to have been aware of the notice, in which case the defence would apply.

09/03/2016 22:48

If an individual accepts they have not acted with due diligence in terms of dealing with their post, for example by failing to have suitable arrangements for dealing with the post or a mail redirection service in place if away, then this may create difficulties in establishing a defence. A fine is applicable and according to the Magistrates’ Courts Sentencing Guidelines the fine starting point is level C, which means 150 per cent of the relevant weekly income and six penalty points.

RHA said there has been no change to the current rules regarding road sum allowances for overnighting truck drivers

T

he Road Haulage Association has highlighted an HMRC error over tax allowances for which certain truck drivers are eligible if they spend nights in their cabs and away from home. According to the RHA, it has an historical agreement over the payment of a round sum allowance to those drivers who use sleeper cabs while on a business journey. The agreement, it said, simply requires the employer to be satisfied the driver is away from his normal base and therefore sleeping in his cab. However, HMRC has been telling hauliers that in addition to the above, they need to get proof of purchases from their drivers if they are going to pay an overnight subsistence allowance up to the rate agreed with the RHA – but that is quite wrong, the Association said. RHA director of policy, Jack Semple, said there is no change to the present system whereby drivers have to be genuinely

away in their cabs overnight – in a genuine subsistence position – but nothing further is required. “We have confirmation of that from HMRC,” he said, “but HMRC inspectors have, in some cases, been imposing new demands on hauliers. And the website has been incorrect. It should have been put right immediately and we have made that point to HMRC. “The overnight subsistence payment is a proper recognition of the realities of the road haulage industry – a sector that is vital to the UK economy – and HMRC should not be seeking to add to the burden of red tape in the way that it functions,” Semple added. “More to the point, it has agreed not to do so – but appears to have failed to communicate that internally. “I fear many hauliers, from the smallest to the very large, may have been told there are changes when there are none; that a more complicated system is being imposed, when that is not the case,” he concluded.

ISSUE 364 MARCH 29 2016

TOP SPEEDERS EXCEEDING 100 MPH IN 30 MPH ZONES F ive drivers have been caught travelling at more than 100 mph on 30 and 40 mph limit roads in England, and a further two were caught travelling at over 70 mph in these areas, which tend to be largely residential. The statistics were part of a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to every police force in Britain, asking for the location and speed of their top five highest recorded cases captured on safety cameras in their areas from January 1, 2015 to January 30, 2016. Thirty-eight of 44 forces provided data. Of those, there were 11 cases where one of their top five fell in a residential 30 or 40 mph area, covering five police force areas. The list is as follows:

“These are the roads we all use on a day-to-day basis and as a result are rife with hazards for any driver,” said Sarah Sillars, chief executive officer of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), which made the FOI request. “Schoolchildren, shoppers, the elderly – they are all using the same space and won’t be prepared for anybody travelling at this speed.” The IAM highlighted that at 30 mph, a vehicle would travel 13 m a second. The overall stopping distance for a car at 30 mph is 22 m. At 100 mph, a vehicle would travel 45 m every second. IAM said if someone stepped out into the road, a driver would cover 30 m in the time it takes to lift his foot from the accelerator

Freedom of Information request found some motorists are reaching “suicidal” speeds in residential areas

and depress the brake pedal – that is, if they have a reaction time of 0.6 of a second. The average driver would be much slower than that to react. At 100 mph, the stopping distance for a car is 182 m – and in a busy urban street, a lot can happen in 182 m, the Institute said. “Exceeding the limit to such a degree is potentially suicidal in such conditions, not to mention incredibly dangerous for other road users,” Sillars continued. “Clearly these drivers do not see the potential

Truck sat navs

Manufacturer: Garmin Web: www.garmin.com/en-GB Price: £319.99 (dèzl 570), £379.99 (dèzl 770) Garmin has updated its range of truck sat navs with dèzl 570 and 770 models. The units feature large 5 and 7-inch glass displays respectively which make it easier to see information at a glance, even on a large dashboard, and sport a reinforced, rugged housing. The devices also add a range of new truck-specific features, such as easier route shaping, specific points of interest and headset support (dèzl 770 only). The devices can also be used to display images from reversing cameras.

Fishcale microfibre cloths Manufacturer: Paragon Microfibre Web: www.paragonmicrofibre.com Price: From £1.80 per cloth

If you want to make your windscreen and mirrors squeaky clean, take a look at these next-generation fishscale glass cloths. They’re more aggressive than standard weave glass cloths and have higher absorption qualities. The 300 gsm cloths are available in two sizes – 40x40 cm and 80x60 cm – and contain 70 per cent polyester and 30 per cent polyamide, 0.13 denier.

consequences of what they are doing. We believe if we are going to change this mind set, there needs to be personalised sentencing options made available to challenge this behaviour fully. “The IAM would support further research on which types of courses would be most effective in changing entrenched speeding attitudes, so we can start to offer them alongside the well-established speed awareness courses for those just over the limit,” she concluded.

FLOOME smartphone breathalyser Manufacturer: 2045Tech Web: http://floome.com Price: €89

This breathalyser gadget has been designed to enable drivers to measure their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) – using their smartphone, no less. The Italian manufacture reckons FLOOME can deliver accurate and reliable results after a user blows into the device once it’s connected to a phone’s audio jack. According to the manufacturer, FLOOME employs a patent-pending technology that matches a vortex whistle with the fuel cell ethanol sensor widely used by law enforcement breathalyzers. The collected data is sent over audio frequencies to the corresponding app, where the user can view their BAC, get an estimate of when they will reach the legal limit to drive based on their test results and body characteristics, set an alarm to take a new test, and view a graph of previous results.

he licence – and indeed driving test – changes have altered the road transport scene considerably. There are still many car licence holders who took their driving test before 1997 and those still have the entitlement to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes. But those taking their tests after that date would need to take an LGV test to drive them. Of course with the changes in truck licence categories, there are basically just two tests and two truck licence entitlements – rigid and artic. Les Bishop is product marketing manager at MAN Truck & Bus and said there have been a number of significant changes in the truck market, possibly due to the introduction of the new licence category legislation, but also linked to the need for more payload and greater efficiencies in transport operations. For example, a lot of 6x4 chassis were used by operators hauling aggregates, and many of those have now turned to eight-wheeler chassis. “The 7.5-tonner market is still significant, but has declined, but the numbers haven’t transferred into the heavier truck sector,” Bishop said. “Most companies which previously used 7.5-tonners seem to have turned to using large vans (these go up to 3.5 tonnes gvw). “The 6x2 market has grown considerably and the reasons for that could be two-fold; it could be linked to the greater payload efficiencies over 4x2s, because costs are of the two are roughly on a par, but a 6x2 rear-steer for example offers greater manoeuvrability. Residual values are also better.” They also offer the option of operating as a drawbar outfit, which adds to their versatility. “All MAN TGM rigids are primarily designed for solo operation, but can be upgraded for drawbar operation by fitting the drawbar fittings, air lines etc,” Bishop said. “TGS and TGX rigids are designed for either solo or drawbar operation and already have all the necessary fittings in place, except for the drawbar coupling itself.” Interestingly, Bishop also said operators running drawbar outfits usually opt for lowerpowered prime movers, typically around 360 bhp.

No-frills TGS is well designed for distribution work MAN had a TGS 26.360 6x2 Drawbar available for us to test, so we thought we’d see what the benefits of one of these really are.

Driving impressions

Climbing into the truck makes you realise how well designed it is for distribution work. The three large steps and sturdy grab handles take you up into the well-appointed cab, giving a busy driver ease of access while at the same time offering superior all-round visibility once in the cockpit and behind the wheel. Drivers used to baulk at seeing an automated transmission when they got into a new truck, but now it is the other way around! The MAN TipMatic system is simple in use. Just select D on the small console next to the driver’s seat, let the parking brake off and all you have to do then is steer the truck. On the road, the engine powers the truck along quietly, efficiently and

effortlessly, the TipMatic automated transmission system selecting the optimum gears for any given situation. Ride is superb in this MAN. It gives the impression of a truck riding on air suspension all-round, although this truck sits on parabolic springs at the front. Handling is excellent. The rear-steer axle boosts the truck’s manoeuvrability considerably, and drivers who have to visit difficult-to-access yards or other areas which have limited space will really reap the benefits from this. Operators too will see savings in terms of tyre scuff and general reduction in drivetrain wear and tear. A six-wheeler curtainsider-bodied rigid with a tail lift (a tuck-away version in this case) is

a typical truck used by logistics companies across the UK. An obvious choice for pallet hauliers, with its high-roof LX cab, the truck offers the best of both worlds – a high-end rigid for local and/or long distance work or, with a trailer attached, a truck suited to a multitude of tasks. The cab gives the best in terms of interior space and comfort for the driver too. As the emphasis shifts to greater emissions reductions from vehicles, and more low emission zones spread across Europe, more trucks like this MAN will be required by operators who need to access these areas to service their customers’ businesses.

PROTOTYPE RANGE-EXTENDED TRUCK HITS THE TEST TRACK

O

utdoor flooring and equipment specialist GT Trax has taken delivery of its first Iveco heavy truck. The Cambridgeshire-based company’s order for the Stralis Hi-Road rigid followed the introduction of a new heavy roadway system to its product range which could not be transported by the company’s existing vehicles. The new truck will be used to deliver, install, remove and collect the temporary roadway system which will be utilised by those in the construction and outdoor events industries. The roadway provides a safe passage for vehicles across otherwise inaccessible areas such as construction sites and muddy fields. “As this was a major investment for us, we had conversations with several truck dealers and manufacturers before placing the order,” said GT Trax financial director, Graham Crisp. “Iveco came out as the clear winner based on the suitability of the Stralis, our confidence in Iveco’s Hi-SCR engine technology and the fantastic support we received from the dealer. “Mark Beetlestone at Guest Truck & Van went out of his way to ensure the truck was equipped with everything we needed for this unique application. It’s without doubt the most specialist vehicle we’ve ever ordered.” The 26-tonne 6x2 rigid has been specified with a rear-steering axle and full airsuspension to increase manoeuvrability on

A sites with restricted access. The Stralis also features alloy wheels, extended-range fuel and AdBlue tanks, alloy air reservoirs, xenon headlights and air-suspended driver and passenger seats for maximum cab comfort. The Hi-Road sleeper cab also includes Iveconnect – an integrated satellite navigation, infotainment, fleet management and telematics system which enables GT Trax to communicate with its drivers, while having access to accurate location information at any time. The system also includes a comprehensive Driving Style Evaluation tool, which acts as an on-board driving instructor to assess driving style and provide suggestions for reducing fuel consumption. The new Stralis is powered by Iveco’s 460 bhp Cursor 11 engine, which runs through a EuroTronic automated transmission – manufactured for Iveco by ZF. The new Stralis Hi-Road is finished in a bespoke red and white livery and mounted with a flatbed body built by TH White. It is also equipped with a rear-mounted Palfinger crane for loading and unloading sections of track, plus front stabilisers to ensure the vehicle remains stable during lifting. For maximum flexibility, GT Trax has also taken delivery of a matching, purpose-built Adcliffe tri-axle drawbar trailer, allowing the vehicle to operate at a maximum gross train weight of up to 44 tonnes.

new range-extended electric truck prototype has been put to work at the Millbrook test track in the UK to test its potential to deliver ultra-low emissions at operating costs which are reportedly “far lower” than fossil fuel equivalents. Developed by Charge R&D, an internationally funded but UK-based high technology company, the new truck platform is designed to be used in commercial vehicles from two to 26 tonnes gross weight. The endurance testing programme using this first prototype, which will be followed by several others this year, is designed to evaluate major components and the fuel efficiency of the range-extended electric concept truck. “We believe that very soon we will be able to demonstrate we have found the ultimate

emp controlled trailer maker Thermo King has partnered with DHL to launch a new Double Decker HighLoader concept airline catering vehicle. Thermo King worked with airport ground support equipment manufacturer Mallaghan, which built the body for the DHL concept vehicle. Thermo King’s UT-1200 unit provides the temperature controlled duties inside the new catering truck, which is mounted on a Scania chassis. It has also been designed to operate within the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) and meets all safety and environmental

standards set by the Transport for London. “The unique element of our vehicle’s design is that when in transit, it is under the 4 m height restriction within the airport,” said Martin Bryce, engineering manager UK and Ireland at DHL. “However, once engaged with the aircraft, the vehicle’s roof can be raised and the internal lifting deck can be operated. This enables the truck to achieve 80 per cent more payload potential, which should operationally reduce the total number of vehicles necessary further improving the efficiency and carbon footprint reduction for DHL and the airport.”

Range-extended Charge prototype is currently on test at Millbrook target of emissions-free heavy vehicle technology – ultra-low emissions at much less than the cost of diesel power,” said Glenn Saint, Charge’s technical director.

Multiple vehicle cover

Q

I own two vans, two cars and a motorbike, all separately insured – and yet as the only drivers are myself and my partner, it seems crazy I have to pay five policies when only two vehicles can be on the road at any one time. Can you suggest anything?

A

There are two options for you here, but they very much depend on the type of business use you need (if any) for vans, for example. The first is a mini-fleet policy, which some insurance companies offer, and this may include business use. The second option, which is known as a multi-vehicle policy, may have certain restrictions on the type of business use. It is, therefore, a case of speaking to a local insurance broker and also trying online, as the multi-vehicle policies are also offered by the online insurers.

Renewal price hike

Q

Our fleet insurance premium has increased by 30 per cent this year, and when we asked why, we were shown our claims experience for the first time – which has several claims going back three years labelled as “outstanding”. All of these claims are grossly over-estimated, and I doubt if many if them will ever be paid as they were not our drivers’ fault. I feel completely let down by my broker and also the insurance company, but what can I do?

A

I entirely agree you gave been let down, as you should be given a copy of your claims listing at least once of year, and then at least three weeks before renewal date so issues can be addressed. Your first action must be to change brokers. Even though your

Read the paper online at www.transportcafe.co.uk

policy may have had to be renewed, I would happily take over a client’s policies irrespective of the renewal, as I am sure some of my competitors would also do. While we would not earn anything for a mid-term transfer, in my eyes it gives me the opportunity to prove my worth to the client before next renewal. I would immediately contact your insurers after meeting with you and systematically go through each outstanding claim and have as many of these as possible removed from your claims history. Assuming this shows a substantially different picture, I would then appeal to the Underwriters in the hope they may reconsider the renewal for this current year. At the very least we would have everything in order for next year’s renewal, but hopefully be able to obtain a reduction in the current year’s premium.

Go it alone

Q

I am thinking of setting up on my own as a driver agency initially, with just myself and maybe one or two other drivers. Can you tell me what insurance I will need, please?

A

Public and Employers Liability will be your first requirement, and the good news on this front is that this is inexpensive insurance for this type of business. However, it is very likely your customers will require that you have Drivers Negligence Insurance, which is expensive – especially for a new-start business; and as there are minimum annual premiums, it will be proportionally even more expensive when you only start with two or three drivers. You should obtain quotations for these insurances first before you make the decision to go ahead with your business idea, so you can work out the economies.
