Volvo praises the lowered
V
olvo Trucks is expanding its Euro 6 truck line-up with a low-entry version of its new FE. Dubbed the FE LEC (Low Entry Cab), the truck has been specially designed for refuse operations and city distribution. The cab features a low-entry, flat-floor design with improved visibility and space for up to four people. According to Pernilla Sustovic, segment manager, distribution at Volvo Trucks, the demand for efficient refuse transport and city distribution vehicles is increasing – and the FE LEC offers operators a number of unique benefits. “With the new FE LEC, we are the only manufacturer to offer a refuse truck with a low entry and automated manual gearbox as an alternative to a fullyautomatic transmission,” Sustovic said. “I-Shift makes driving more fuel-efficient and the transmission’s lower weight means more payload.” The FE LEC is based on the latest generation of Volvo’s medium-duty FE, so the chassis, driveline, design, instruments
and controls are all more or less identical. However, the new truck offers an entry height of 530 mm. With the kneeling function activated, this is lowered a further 90 mm. The doors can be opened 90 degrees and the floor is flat throughout the cab. The cab itself can be fitted with up to three passenger seats. The driver’s seat is more forward-placed to improve visibility ahead and to the sides of the truck. The cab also features large rear-view mirrors and close-quarter mirrors. Extra side windows behind the B-posts are available as an option. “The Volvo FE LEC has been designed to make daily operations easier for the driver and crew. That is why we attached considerable importance to the practical details,” said John Comer, product manager, Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland. The Volvo FE LEC was unveiled at IFAT 2014 - one of the world’s largest exhibitions specialising in the environment and refuse handling - in Munich, Germany.

Firm fined after driver fall
A
Suffolk logistics firm has been fined for safety failings after a truck driver fell from a flatbed trailer at a company warehouse in Felixstowe. The 60-year-old worker from mid Glamorgan, who does not wish to be named, broke his hip in three places and needed two steel pins inserted to help repair the damage following the incident on February 6, 2013. He was reliant on crutches for three months and was unable to return to work for a further three months. Denholm Global Logistics was prosecuted by the Health and Safety
Executive (HSE) after an investigation found more could and should have been done to prevent his fall. Ipswich Magistrates’ Court heard the driver, from a company in Wales, was collecting pallets of bricks from Denholm Global’s warehouse for onward transport. He had been asked to cover and secure the load to his flatbed trailer with a protective sheet, but as he walked along the edge of the trailer to pull the sheet across, he slipped and fell 1.5 m to the ground. HSE found the space occupied by the load meant the trailer’s edge protection barriers could not be raised. Despite
instructing him to cover the load, Denholm Global Logistics failed to provide safeguards to prevent him from falling from the trailer. HSE subsequently served the company with an enforcement notice requiring it to put measures in place to prevent workers falling in similar circumstances. It complied by providing two full-length gantry platforms designed to fit down the side of the trailer and provide edge protection for working on the trailers of this type. Denholm Global Logistics Ltd of Unit 6, Dooley Road, Felixstowe, was fined £15,000 and ordered to pay £4285 in costs after pleading guilty to a single breach of the
MAN rigids prove fantastic for plastics
P
reston-based Jonesco, which supplies plastics to the commercial vehicle, fire safety and environmental markets, has taken delivery of its first Euro 6 MAN 7.5-tonners in the hope they will make considerable savings over a five-year R&M contract compared to its previous truck supplier. Two TGL 8.150 BB 4x2s rigids with manual gearboxes are already operating out of Jonesco’s new purpose-built warehouse and distribution centre in Fulwood. Volumebased operation includes Monday-to-Friday multi-drop work, distributing the company’s own plastics goods. The new site was opened 12 months ago and features a Brysdales racking system to provide 2400 pallet locations. The new trucks were funded through MAN Financial Services, and full MAN telematics featuring MAN EcoStyle driver performance monitoring are included. The 23 ft 6 inch curtainsided bodywork was supplied and fitted by Fosters Commercials in Preston. “Our five-year, 650,000 km R&M contract
comes in a full £10,000 less per vehicle than MAN’s competitor truck brand in our fleet – and against any other truck manufacturer, for that matter,” said Jonesco’s despatch manager, Damian Leigh. “For a three-vehicle fleet, that’s a significant cost saving for our transport operation.” “We were very impressed with how MAN has transitioned from Euro 5 to Euro 6,” he continued. “They have used EGR and SCR technologies for many years, and I believe this has showed in the reduced cost and greater scope of its R&M package. This was a key factor in our decision to move to MAN.” “Although the relationship is in its early stages, service from our local dealer, MAN Truck & Bus Preston, has also been excellent, and its M6/J29 location suits us much better.” Jonesco’s new distribution warehouse is built on a 3.7-acre site and provides space for the company’s expanding business. Five loading bays with dock-levelers allow for receipt and dispatch of goods through the rear of the trailer, leading to significant savings in its first 12 months.

Speaking after the hearing, HSE inspector Edward Crick said: “This worker has suffered significant injuries because Denholm Global Logistics did not provide any form of protection to safeguard visiting drivers from falling from the trailers. “Their policy was to ensure flatbed trailer loads were sheeted. They provided a dedicated area to do this, but failed to provide anything to prevent falls. “They complied with an Improvement Notice requiring this, and had this measure been in place at the time, these injuries would have been prevented.”

Councils hit by soaring pothole claims
Potholes.co.uk said its new signage could help roadusers avoid holes in damaged stretches of highway
C
ouncils in the areas worst hit by the winter storms are now facing a rising swell of automotive compensation claims according to campaign website Potholes.co.uk. Road users are demanding remuneration for axle, wheel and suspension faults caused by pothole-ridden stretches of saturated roads. In one county – deluged Somerset – claims spiked at 204 in January/February from just 24 in November/December – representing a 750 per cent rise in cases. Potholes.co.uk said it has spotted the same trend in some of the other regions worst hit by flooding at the start of this year. Surrey County Council reported a 353 per cent increase and admitted an “unprecedented number of claims” meant there was still a backlog of claims waiting to go on to the system, meaning the statistics will worsen. Worcester floods hit record levels in February, and claims to the County Council also rose 400 per cent from 25 in November/ December to 125 in January/February. To draw attention to the ongoing problem with the crumbling roads, Potholes.co.uk has designed a new temporary sign that could be adopted to warn motorists and other road users about pothole-ridden stretches of road. Pothole damage to vehicles in the UK creates an estimated annual repair bill of £730
million and continues to increase each year, according to research by Potholes.co.uk and Warranty Direct. “With potholed stretches of road affecting many road users on a daily basis, there’s now real cause to create dedicated signage,” said Warranty Direct managing director, David Gerrans. “Let’s give people a fighting chance of avoiding unnecessary garage bills or even personal injury. “If road signs can warn of falling rocks from above, then why not craters from below? The average bill for pothole damage now runs at £247, so a sign only needs stop a couple of incidents to justify the expenditure. The embarrassment will be for the government in just how many signs need to be put up – there’s one pothole for every mile of road by some estimates.” As a result of the heavy rainfall damaging roads, campaign website Potholes.co.uk had more than 1500 potholes reported across the UK in January and February alone, by motorists who had either damaged their vehicles or were trying to warn others of the hazards. While the average repair bill for potholeinduced axle or suspension damage is £247, Warranty Direct and Potholes.co.uk have identified recent claims as high as £2700. The average cost for a council to repair a single pothole is around £52.
Alcohol smugglers jailed
T
wo men have been imprisoned for committing £2 million worth of alcohol smuggling fraud by masquerading as legitimate haulage companies. Maidstone Crown Court sentenced Kieran Patrick Hughes, 55, from Portadown, to six years and William Canning, 44, from Ballykelly, to 27 months in prison. They faked paperwork using details of legitimate companies, claiming to import vinegar, fruit juice, detergent and water into the UK from Europe, to avoid paying nearly £2 million duty on the alcohol.
“Over 18 months, these men attempted to flood the UK with illicit alcohol with the aim of lining their own pockets, at the expense of UK taxpayers,” said David Margree, assistant director, Criminal Investigation, HMRC. “They hijacked details from legitimate hauliers in order to disguise the fact they were committing fraud. The alcohol was sold on and the profits used to fund further criminality, undercutting legitimate retailers who could not compete with these fraudsters.” Both men will serve half their sentence in prison and half on licence.

Actros astounds KELSEY MEDIA, PO BOX 978, PETERBOROUGH, PE1 9FL

The new Mercedes-Benz Actros premium long-haul tractor unit range was the star attraction for some of the North-West’s leading road transport operators, at a launch event staged by leading dealer Enza.

Held at the Oulton Park race circuit in Cheshire, the event gave invited guests their first chance to put the vehicle through its paces on UK roads. New Actros is the ultimate premium truck for longdistance transport. From the outset, designers and engineers were determined to provide the best possible comfort, driving dynamics, safety, productivity and operating economy, as well as a sweeping range of cab sizes, engine ratings and options, allowing customers to tailor vehicles perfectly for any application. The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The 81 guests took turns to head out on a 17-mile test drive, carefully chosen to simulate a variety of typical driving conditions. The route included single- and dualMark May reckons the new Mercedes-Benz Actros is ʻbrilliantʼ. carriageway roads. Each of the four demonstrator trucks provided for the event made 10 journeys - a total of almost 700 miles covered on the day. On each trip, the mpg figure achieved was recorded and at the end of the day the winner was Craig Stewart, logistics manager at Widnes-based Ray Stewart Haulage, who averaged an impressive 11.4 mpg in the 510 bhp V8-powered Actros 2551, and 11.8 mpg in the 450 bhp Actros 2545 model. Between journeys, guests also enjoyed ‘hot laps’ of the Oulton Park circuit in two-seater racing cars piloted by professional drivers. PERSONAL INJURY SPECIALISTS Transport manager Mark May of food waste and animal by-products recycling specialist John Pointon & Sons, summed up the feelings of many when he said: “It was a great day, very informative and enjoyable, and superbly organised. The new Actros is brilliant. The driving experience was fantastic and if the fuel performance figures are to be believed it will be an unbeatable all-round package. The previous Actros is a very good truck - but this new one is a huge step forward.”

Currie European ordered 25 new FHs based on good fuel returns from demonstrator unit
C
urrie European Transport Ltd has placed orders with Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland for 25 Euro 6-compliant Volvo FH tractor units, set for delivery during 2014. An evaluation vehicle of the same specification went into service on March 1, and its Dynafleet telematics data for March and April showed an average fuel consumption of 9.85 mpg. Ten of the new trucks were delivered in April, and Currie European’s managing
director, Stephen Turner, said early fuel figures are encouraging: “We have only had the first Euro 6 vehicle since March, but early fuel data indications show consistent weekly improved fuel figures. A further 10 Euro 6 FHs went into service during the first two weeks of April, and although it is early days, we are receiving weekly feedback and so far the data received is consistent with the evaluation vehicle returns.” Turner said Volvo trucks have been favoured in the firm’s fleet for many years,
based on reliability, fuel performance and positive driver feedback. “All road tests to date suggest the new FH model is a superb truck, and we were therefore very keen to introduce it into our fleet as soon as possible,” he said. All 25 of the 6x2 Euro 6 FHs were specified with Globetrotter XL cabs and Volvo’s D13K500, 13-litre engine rated at 500 bhp. Each truck is equipped with I-Shift automated transmission, and Dynafleet telematics was specified to provide data and reports.

Earlier this month, my son Josh passed his LGV C+E (HGV Class 1) test. He’s 18 years old, and statistics from DSA show that out of 81 18-yearold’s that took the test, only 54 passed – and Josh passed first time. Our local newspaper, The Mildenhall Journal, was very interested and he made the front page. The reason he was able to take his test was because he was sponsored by his company, Derek Cooper Transport, on a ‘Young Drivers Scheme’ which was being run by Total Driving in Stowmarket. Truck driving is Josh’s life, and he now works for Derek Cooper Transport full time. As well as running bulk tippers, the company also
has a large fleet of vintage vehicles which Josh helps to transport around the country to various shows and events – the next one being Newark at the end of the month. Kaye Clinton (very proud Mum), By email Congratulations to Josh for passing his Class 1 test first time at the age of 18 - a real achievement to be proud of. It’s always good to hear of new drivers entering the industry, and schemes such as you describe are a real benefit. We send our best wishes to Josh for his future career in road transport – ed.
The writer of our Star Letter this month will win a stunning Corgi model Volvo FH (Face Lift) with Super curtainside trailer in the colours of WH Malcolm of Renfrewshire, worth £89.99!

BOOK Juggernaut: Trucking to Saudi Arabia Author: Robert Hutchison Publisher: Old Pond ISBN: 978-1-908397-86-7 Web: www.oldpond.com Price: £12.95 Rating: «««««
This reissue of author Robert Hutchison’s memorable account of his trip from the UK to Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia as a passenger in a Scania 111 is pretty much required reading for anyone interested in the classic Middle East run. First published in 1987, the book found favour with readers due to its frank and realistic account of a journey that took Robert and the truck’s driver, Graham Davies of Whittle International, through no fewer than 14 countries on their mission to deliver their cargo – machinery and ovens used in the production of plastic pipes.
It is defined that a driver must be able to spend his time on break freely and recuperating. It is also stated that should a driver know the length of time for which he will be loaded or unloaded, he may apply a rest period to this time. As VOSA is so keen to uphold the law in respect of drivers maintaining correct break laws, why then is VOSA not interested in maintaining the definition of these laws when it comes to big companies? I am currently a prisoner at a depot in Doncaster. I am being tipped on a bay and have been informed that I will be here longer than 45 minutes. I am therefore on break, and wish to have a cigarette. Nicotine addiction is my disability – it is a legal addiction and is probably better covered by the Disability Act than by VOSA regulations. However, with no facilities for drivers to smoke here, I have asked to go outside the gate to recuperate as per the law. This involves fulfilling the addiction for my disability. The company that runs the depot is therefore depriving me of my Human Rights by causing anxiety from my addiction, holding me prisoner and, as I cannot
While the original hardback editions of Juggernaut had no photographs, this new and re-set paperback edition includes 36 of the author’s full-colour pictures which he took on the trip, which helps paint the trek in much more vivid colours. A first-class read.

recuperate, it is making it impossible for me to fulfill driving law breaks by their very definition. Please come and rescue me. An imprisoned driver By email Thanks for your email. We forwarded it to our legal expert, David Glover, who provided this reply: As always, individual circumstances can vary upon closer analysis and you should consider obtaining full advice from a specialist. I will look at the issues from a broad perspective. The Equality Act 2010 (“the Act”) imposes a duty on employers to make reasonable adjustments to help disabled employees in certain circumstances. Under the Act, a person has a disability if a person has a physical or mental impairment, and the impairment has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on the person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities (see section 6(1) of the Act). Unfortunately however, addiction to nicotine is specifically listed as not amounting to an impairment for the purposes of the Act (see Regulation 3(1) of the Equality Act 2010 (Disability) Regulations 2010). In the circumstances, any such duty to make reasonable adjustments will likely not arise as you do not have a disability within the meaning of the Act. Please note that the definition of disability is technical and does not necessarily correspond with common perceptions of disability or with other legal approaches. I do empathise with the position and it may be that you or your employer can approach the distribution centre to see if some form of compromise can be achieved.

Fans waited 11 years for Boston’s sixth album – an album that delivers just 29 mins of new material. There are traces Boston’s traditional trademark guitar sound to be heard, but all-in-all a vocals-by-committee approach, a political rap and poor production combine to deliver something of a standard we can’t ever believe perfectionist Tom Scholz would put his name to.

suffered a stroke at the wheel. He managed to stop his truck, but when he tried to get out he fell to the ground into the path of traffic, unable to move. He was trying to flag down some assistance for what seemed like along time for him, and the only person to stop was a fellow truck driver. We are trying to trace him so we can thank him properly, but unfortunately we have very little details other than his name was Pete and he had a Mill Transport top/ jumper on. Pete stayed with my father till the ambulance arrived, and we would be grateful if you can help in the search for this mystery driver so we can thank him – as without his actions, there is a good chance my father may not be here today. PICTURE PERFECT? As a private motorist and using transport cafes which we both find excellent, we thought we would like to write to your paper with the following. Over the years, we have noticed that some car drivers are getting extremely impatient to overtake long lorries, and when asked, most drivers don’t know what the stripes on the back of lorries mean. Therefore, some time ago, we came up with an idea: a plate on the back of a lorry showing an outline of a car or cars denoting the length of the lorry. We have subsequently written to Eddie Stobart (no response) and the Department for Transport, which wrote back with a negative response. Obviously, as we travel a lot ourselves, we see car drivers putting not only their own lives in danger, but risking the safety of the lorry driver. It would be nice to see a transport company take us up on this idea - and if it works, then going national. Pater & Angela Childs West Midlands
Musketeers is extremely well shot (in the Czech Republic), well produced, and generally offers up good plot lines and good acting. Not taking itself too seriously, it’s also not overly sex/ bad language-filled or gratuitously violent. The series’ high production values makes this a good watch if you’re up for a bit of swashbuckling. Rating: ««««

LOAF BAKES WINCANTON DELIVERY DEAL

Loaf has lined up Wincanton to handle its logistics requirements
U
K homeware company Loaf has awarded a new multichannel contract for nationwide warehouse and distribution services to Wincanton. Founded by entrepreneur Charlie Marshall in 2008, Loaf has reported average annual sales growth of 81 per cent over the last three years, with a current yearly turnover of £20 million. With its sights set on reaching £100 million turnover in the next few years, Loaf said it has turned to Wincanton to help achieve that target. The contract, run from Wincanton’s multi-user warehouse site in Greenford, West London, will see the company’s two-man ‘white glove’ service make deliveries direct to Loaf’s customers across the UK. In addition, Wincanton will oversee the
careful distribution of individual packages, utilising its order management and parcel carrier solution, which will reduce Loaf’s costs in its own customer care centre. “Wincanton ticks the right boxes to support our quick growth and everexpanding product range,” said Loaf’s Charlie Marshall. “Loaf is founded on the idea of making the shopping and delivery process as hassle-free and friendly as possible. I’m confident they will help us to continue to look after our customers really, really well.” Liam McElroy, Wincanton’s managing director for retail, added: “We have a long and successful track record partnering ambitious, fast-growing businesses; Loaf is a particularly exciting company who we are proud to be supporting.”

othertruckers, the club for lady truckers, has reported it is going from strength to strength after a particularly busy weekend at Truckfest Peterborough. Despite only being founded two years ago by Wendy Priestley as a support and friendship club for female truck drivers, the club has now reached well over 300 members. The club is completely free to join, with no renewal fees, but still offers lots of benefits and discounts to members. Wendy ‘Mothertrucker’ Priestley, who runs the club, reckons new members are joining every week. “Who knows how much the club will have grown by next year!” she said. According to Priestley, the girls do lots for charity and raised around £500 in the Race for Life in 2013 – and she said members will be doing the run again this year. The club also ran a quick Sunday raffle at Truckfest for a fluffy cab dog and raised £37 for the East Coast Truckers Convoy children’s charity. “The raffle was won by none other than Ashley Maddox of Stobarts fame, so maybe Tramper the dog will soon be seen nationwide, proudly wearing his Mothertruckers dog tags!” Priestley said.

using mobile phones while driving
Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. For a second and/or subsequent offence to multiply accordingly, for example, second offence in a commercial vehicle 2 x 21 days.

This offence often occurs where a request for information as to the identity of a driver has been sent to the registered keeper of the vehicle. This request often comes with the Notice of intended Prosecution. Failure to complete and return the notice, confirming the identity of the driver can give rise to an offence under section 172 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, which states: Where the driver of a vehicle is alleged to be guilty of any of certain offences then: 1) The person keeping the vehicle must give such information as to the identity of the driver as he may be required to give by or on behalf of a chief officer of police; and
One of the offences some drivers have committed is using a mobile phone while driving. The legislation defines this offence as follows: No person is to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using a handheld mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.
following: sending or receiving oral or written messages; sending or receiving facsimile documents; sending or receiving still or moving images; and providing access to the internet. If you’re caught using a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving, you can expect to get an automatic fixed penalty notice. This means you’ll get three penalty points on your driving licence and have to pay a fine of £60. However, your case may go to court. If it does, you may also face disqualification from driving on top of a maximum fine of £1000. If you were driving a PCV or heavy goods vehicle, you could face a maximum fine of £2500. Also if the matter were considered of a serious nature you could face prosecution for other road transport related offences, which carry more serious sentences.

DPD SETS SIGHTS ON SUNDAY DELIVERIES
D
elivery company DPD has announced it is aiming to become the first UK carrier to provide a nationwide express Sunday delivery service for its customers. DPD said its service, which will start on July 20, 2014, will help create more than 500 new jobs around the UK as the firm’s depot network expands to accommodate a sevenday week. It said the new service will also mean that, for the first time, DPD will be able to collect from business customers on a Saturday for next-day delivery on Sunday. Equally, on a Friday, online retailers will now be able to specify either Saturday or Sunday delivery. Deliveries will be made between 9 am and 5 pm on a Sunday, and DPD’s network of more than 50 UK depots will be open during those hours. From launch, DPD said it will have the ability to deliver to over 98 per cent of the UK population on a Sunday, and the service
will include DPD’s one-hour Predict timeslot deliveries, where parcel recipients are notified by text or email of their one-hour delivery timeslot in advance, and can then track their driver in real-time all the way to their front door. “We know from talking to retailers and recipients that there is a real demand for Sunday deliveries,” said DPD CEO, Dwain McDonald. “The majority of our larger customers in the retail sector are moving to a 24/7 operation, so we wanted to make sure they have a trusted delivery partner that can provide a full collection and delivery service every day of the week too. “Saturday has long been the busiest retail day of the week, but with the blurring of the offline and online retail boundaries it can now also be the busiest day for e-tailers,” McDonald added. “Therefore, it is very appealing for e-tailers to be able to offer nextday delivery for those customers who buy on a Saturday.”

C
larke Transport is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2014 and has recently put into service three new Volvo FH 6x2 tractor units to mark the occasion. Supplied by Hartshorne Group, the trucks will replace older Volvo FH12s in the familyrun company’s 200-strong fleet. The chemical haulier specified the trucks with a D13C-460 Euro 5-compliant engine rated at 460 bhp, and Globetrotter cabs with leather upholstery and Audio Advance with Bluetooth to boost driver comfort. The company has been a Volvo Truck customer since 1978, and its latest vehicles
will be double-shifted to each cover approximately 160,000 km a year, making trunking deliveries with variable loads out of its depots in Oldbury, West Midlands and Ossett, Leeds. Hartshorne will maintain the trucks out-ofhours in line with Clarke’s business needs on a Volvo Repair and Maintenance Contract. “A positive experience with Volvo FHs in the past and good local dealer aftermarket support was a key motivation in our decision to upgrade part of our fleet with the new Volvo FH,” said Clarke Transport operations director, Robert Clarke.

dependent on the Heathrow economy, not least because of the need to grow UK exports and we rely on Heathrow to get 85 per cent of all UK’s air freighted exports out to our customers. “We need to grow our exports to grow our economy, so we need to grow Heathrow,” he concluded.
HEATHROW CAMPAIGN GETS TRUCK-LOAD OF SUPPORT
A
freight firm has made a big impression on the recent Back Heathrow campaign by turning an 18 m yellow MAN outfit into a huge advert for the endeavour. Feltham-based firm Mixed Freight Services decided to get involved with the campaign after bosses became concerned about threats to Heathrow’s future and the lack of support from some politicians, despite thousands of local jobs depending on a successful hub airport in West London. Mixed Freight Services founder, Alan Smith, said: “We wanted to support the Back Heathrow campaign by sending a visible message to politicians that Heathrow’s future affects people like the 70 employees working for our company. “There are hundreds of thousands of jobs in the region that depend on Heathrow, and that is a serious number of people to brush aside in this debate. I think it’s essential

We do not want to see Heathrow decline or close, with the job losses that would bring. But we need many more supporters to make sure politicians understand the vast majority of local people want Heathrow to grow and succeed while remaining in West London.” The campaign has also won the backing of business organisations in West London. BAD DRIVERS CAUGHT BY COPS IN THE CAB
S
urrey Police have taken to the highways in an unmarked MAN truck to combat bad driving as part of Operation Tramline, a three-month pilot project which ran between February and April, developed in partnership with South East Region’s Roads Policing Units (RPU) and the Highways Agency. Surrey Police said the aim of the operation was to combat inappropriate driving behaviours of both commercial and privately owned vehicles on the region’s strategic roads network and target offences including drink and drug drive, use of mobile phones at the wheel, speeding and seatbelt offences. Officers said the unmarked HGV provided an ideal viewing platform for the observation of driver’s actions from a high vantage point while out on the road. The truck was piloted by a police driver while an officer with a video camera recorded evidence, and the team worked alongside two Roads Policing Unit (RPU) motorcyclists and a marked police car. The HGV observing officer would contact the supporting RPU officers who would then stop and deal with the drivers through enforcement and education, such as words of advice, driver education courses, fixed
Op Tramline team recorded dangerous drivers from the cab of an unmarked MAN penalty notices or summons to court. Foreign vehicle drivers were dealt with through the graduated fixed penalty scheme. “Operation Tramline has been a massive success,” said PC Chris Schultze. “We have seen from the results that drivers continue to put themselves and others at risk by driving while distracted, driving anti-socially or simply by not wearing their seatbelt. “We have seen a rise in the compliance of drivers thanks to the hard work of officers across the South East targeting and combating this behaviour through education and enforcement. “We will continue to work with MAN Trucks, the Highways Agency and our colleagues from other forces to develop a business case to make this a national initiative. Drivers may never know where we are patrolling – or indeed, what type of vehicle we will be in – and I believe the risk of getting caught by police acts as a fantastic deterrent.” David Lester, head of fleet management at MAN Trucks, said: “We, in the Fleet

reliable ERF tractor unit which has delivered tanker containers across the UK and Europe is still going strong for a Welsh border haulage contractor after clocking up nearly 1.7 million miles – the equivalent of 52 trips around the earth’s equator. George Starkey, 52, of BG Starkey Haulage, Overton-on-Dee, has owned the tractor unit for 14 years, taking it on when it was five years old and after it had clocked up more than 600,000 miles on triple shifts for BP. Starkey said he puts part of the truck’s reliability down to his use of Morris Lubricants oils in the engine, which was made by Perkins in Shrewsbury, to keep it in tip-top condition – and it has been trouble-free.

lasgow-based Bullet Express is adding 12 DAF CF85-460 44-tonne tractor units to its fleet due to further expansion of its nationwide logistics and haulage operations. The new DAFs are the first to enter the Bullet Express fleet and will be supplied on contract hire from Ryder, joining 40 trucks already supplied by Ryder. “We’ve partnered with Ryder for a number of years and so took the opportunity to re-evaluate the marketplace and choose trucks that were the best possible fit for our business,” said David McCutcheon, managing director Bullet Express. “The DAF CF proved to be the perfect choice.” Bullet Express was founded in 1990 and runs nightly trunking operations to depots across Scotland, England and Ireland – which

delighted to have been involved in such a hugely successful pilot. “Rest assured that if a business case can be made to make this a longstanding national project, then we would be delighted to continue our involvement.”
“She was one of the last engines to come out of the Perkins factory in Shrewsbury, has been running on Morris Lubricants’ oil from Shrewsbury and has been kept on the North Shropshire border for the last 14 years,” Starkey said. “Most haulage companies get rid of their vehicles when they have done 500,000 miles, but I plan to go on driving mine and have no intention of selling her when she’s working fine. A new vehicle wouldn’t do the job any better.” Starkey said his first trip in the ERF was to Poland, and the truck has also been to France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Ireland and Scotland. “I do about 80,000 miles a year, so she’s got a lot of history,” he said.

the company said have led to the its rapid growth during the past two decades. “We witnessed extremely high demand for our services right from the very beginning, and our fast growth rate was facilitated by the flexibility of the contract hire and rental deals provided by Ryder,” McCutcheon added. “We view our relationship with Bullet Express as a partnership,” explains Phil Ashton, Ryder’s head of area sales north. “We have previously supplied both rental and contract hire trucks and worked closely with the company to align the availability of trucks to the demand of their business. The success of the Bullet Express business is due to the dynamic management team they have in place, but I like to think that Ryder played its part in helping to support that process.”

Details were scarce when we went to press ahead of the official launch on September 5, but the Swedish manufacturer told Truckstop News the new FHs will be available in both Euro 5 and 6 form, and pack a vast amount of upgrades and improvements. Leading the charge for fuel efficiency is Volvoʼs new I-See function (Truckstop News, issue 301). The system, which works alongside the I-Shift automated transmission, is claimed to cut consumption by five per cent by storing information about the route the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure progress is as economical as possible,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Truck Corporation. An additional five per cent saving in fuel use is possible with Volvo Trucksʼ new Fuel Package. This package encompasses training and monthly assistance – Fuel Advice – and its aim is to cut fuel costs by changing driving styles and increasing knowledge of how to drive for maximum fuel-efficiency. Volvoʼs new I-Torque Euro 6 driveline – production of which for the European market will get under way in autumn 2013 – should make for additional fuel savings. “ITorque reduces fuel consumption by up to With its new Volvo FH series, Volvo is ʻpushing four the envelopeʼ in re-defining what a premium per cent. Together with I-See and other minor truck can offer. improvements, the result is fuel consumption can drop by up to 10 per cent. For the average truck, this can equate to a saving of up to 4100 litres of fuel a year,” Nilsson continued. On-road manners have received much attention, and Volvo is claiming the new trucks offer exceptional handling thatʼs much like a car. “To put things into perspective, we can even offer independent front suspension, although initially only on left-hand drive vehicles. This world-first takes handling to unsurpassed levels in the truck world,” Nilsson said.

Also of benefit to drivers are improved seats and driving position, optimised to provide a better view of the road. This is aided by an increase in the cabʼs usable window area and an innovative slimmer rear-view mirror design. Stalks and controls are arranged in priority so the most important ones are now closest to the driver, and the steering wheel now has a neck tilt function – another world-first in the truck world. Safety is high on the agenda, An all-new cab structure features more upright A-pillars, which give the cab an additional 1 m3 of interior space. This means an extra 300 litres (10.5 cu ft) of storage capacity, as well as greater comfort on board.“The cab is optimised both for work and leisure time,” Nilsson said. “A better bed, integrated parking cooler, new lighting and low noise levels among other features, all increase the chance of pleasant relaxation and a good nightʼs sleep, which in turn means drivers are less tired and more alert.” Production of the Volvo FH will start in spring 2013 for the European market.

DRIVERS’ HOURS ‘MAINTENANCE’ LOOPHOLE CLARIFIED
T
rucks used in connection with sewerage, flood protection, water, gas and electricity maintenance services may be exempt from the EC drivers’ hours rules, according to the Department for Transport (DfT) and DVSA. The exemption is covered by EC Regulation 561/2006, but DVSA said there has been some confusion over how the rule’s maintenance caveat can be interpreted. In an advice note issued in March, the DfT and DVSA attempted to define more precisely how far-reaching ‘maintenance’ can be within the context of the regulation. It concluded that for vehicles to qualify, they must be directly involved in maintenance work, where
D
part of an existing utility infrastructure is being repaired or replaced. However, this would not cover vehicles used to install new infrastructure. For example, a vehicle involved in replacing an existing section of underground pipe would fall within the derogation; but a vehicle involved in installing a new underground piping system would not. The DfT and DVSA said some electricity companies have argued all their vehicles are exempt because all their work goes towards maintaining the national grid. But this goes beyond the exemption, and some of these operations are in fact bound by EC drivers’ hours rules.

FOOD STORE MANS UP
undee-based independent food wholesaler and retailer CJ Lang & Son has put a new 19-strong MAN fleet on the road to service its long-established contract of supplying food and consumables to the SPAR convenience store chain. A total of 16 new TGS 26.360 6x2 drawbar units and three TGS 26.440 6x2 tractor units are already in operation, joining the existing fleet and delivering around 1000 loads per week to over 300 SPAR stores throughout Scotland. The new fleet is equipped with MAN Fleet Management packages, featuring the web-based MAN EcoStyle driver monitoring system. “MAN’s fleet management system is excellent,” said distribution director, John Leitch. “We have used it on our MAN chassis for the last 12 years and, over time, have seen it mature into a well-developed, userfriendly and, ultimately, invaluable piece of technology. “We didn’t simply replace MANs for MANs

with no due process,” Leitch added. “We took time to look at all the leading manufacturers’ offerings; we compiled a detailed matrix comparison, and made our selection on a pragmatic basis as well as previous experience.” Trading for over 90 years, CJ Lang remains a Scottish family business and is one of Scotland’s largest independent companies. The company services over 300 SPAR stores throughout Scotland from its 14.5-acre distribution site incorporating ambient storage and purpose-built chilled and frozen depot, both in Dundee.

SALLY TRAFFIC HELPS SERVE UP NATIONAL TRUCKERS WEEK
B
BC Radio 2‘s Sally Traffic stopped by Welcome Break’s South Mimms service station on Wednesday, May 14 to celebrate the motorway service operator’s first ever National Truckers Appreciation Week. Welcome Break said it launched National Truckers Appreciation Week on Monday, May 12, 2014 to recognise the UK’s estimated 300,000 lorry drivers and the huge contribution they make to the country. On the morning of May 14, lorry drivers who stopped off at any Welcome Break service station nationwide between 6 am and 10 am enjoyed a free bacon sandwich courtesy of Welcome Break – and drivers who visited the truck stop at South Mimms were also served a free cup of tea or coffee by Sally Traffic. Sally Traffic was at South Mimms all morning, inviting truckers to pose for a ‘SallySelfie’ and finding out about their tales of the road and favourite songs to drive to. Sally Traffic was on hand to serve truckers a cuppa and bacon butty at Welcome Break South Mimms to help celebrate National Truckers Appreciation Week Mimms also received a special #TruckerLove mug. “Through my time as a radio traffic reporter, I know how much truckers contribute to our economy and industry, and it’s high time they were shown the appreciation they deserve,” Sally said. “I really enjoyed meeting all the lorry drivers at Welcome Break South Mimms this morning and treating them to a delicious bacon roll and a cuppa – it was certainly worth the early start!” Rod McKie, CEO of Welcome Break, added: “Without a doubt, truckers are the unsung heroes of our roads, so we felt they deserved to be celebrated. After receiving so much feedback from those who use our sites, we decided it was time to treat the lorry drivers of the UK and start engaging with them to improve their visits to us. “There was a great atmosphere at Welcome Break South Mimms this morning and we know the truckers all really enjoyed meeting Sally.”

CANDIDATES: MIND YOUR LANGUAGE DURING DRIVING TEST!
D
riving tests will now only be allowed to be taken in English and Welsh in a bid to improve safety and clamp down on fraud, according to roads minister Stephen Hammond. Prior to the new rules, which came into force on April 7, theory tests have been available with voiceovers in 19 foreign languages, and candidates could use an interpreter on both the theory and practical driving tests. But the changes that are now in effect were introduced after a consultation showed more than 70 per cent supported the withdrawal of foreign language voiceovers and interpreters. “It is essential all road users have the right skills to use our roads safely and responsibly,” Hammond said. “By stopping driving tests in foreign languages, we will cut out the risk of fraud and help to ensure all drivers can read road signs and fully understand the rules of the road.” The consultation revealed that a majority of respondents agreed that not understanding English (or Welsh) could lead to drivers being unable to read traffic signs, speak with traffic enforcement officers or understand details of the rules of the road.
Read the paper online at www.truckingmag.co.uk
The decision also reflects concerns about interpreters helping candidates cheat on their theory tests by feeding them the correct answers.

FM hook-loaders make the NEWS
N
orse Commercial Services subsidiary Norfolk Environmental Waste Services (NEWS) has taken delivery of six Boughton hook-loader equipped Volvo FM eight-wheelers to assist with the servicing of 19 Household Waste Recycling Centres within Norfolk, under contract with Norfolk County Council. A further two Boughton close-coupled trailers have also been purchased to further improve the efficiency of the fleet within the new contract, which commenced on April 1. The Boughton hook-loader systems feature the company’s Kwikova automatic container sheeting system, rear combi-locks, rear axle stabilisers and VBG couplings. The Boughton tri-axle close-coupled trailers feature a retractable drawbar and hydraulic legs and locks.
The Norse fleet already includes other Boughton-equipped vehicles, some of which have been in service for over 12 years. The new Volvo FM chassis are rated for operation at 32 tonnes gvw and 44 tonnes gtw. Power comes from the 420 bhp version of Volvo’s 13-litre Euro 5 SCR sixcylinder engine, driving through the I-Shift automated gearbox with a fitted gearboxmounted PTO. The vehicles were supplied through the East Anglia Volvo Truck & Bus Centre in Norwich. “We have had very good experience of utilising both Boughton and Volvo within our existing fleet, and that underlined our confidence for the new purchase to meet the demands of this major new contract,” said Norse transport manager, John Mellor.
Arocs duo makes Orchard debut
S
t Austell-based independent scrap processing merchant Henry Orchard & Sons has added a pair of 8x4 Arocs 3240s with 394 bhp Euro 6 engines and Multilift hook-loading gear to its fleet. The vehicles follow three New Actros 2545 BigSpace tractor units, which entered service on January 1. All are fitted with the optional Predictive Power Control system, which employs 3D GPS mapping to read 3 km of topography ahead then responds by controlling speed, braking and the transmission to maximise fuel efficiency. The third-generation family firm’s first experience of City West Commercials was as a service agent – it began using the workshop team at the dealer’s recently refurbished Roche facility last year to maintain its fleet of 15 trucks and trailers.
A
Shortly afterwards, managing director Henry Orchard placed an order with City West for two 6x2 units from the previous Actros range. The operator’s Arocs have replaced a pair of older eight-wheelers. They are now collecting scrap in 40 cubic yard bins from local authorities, factories, Ministry of Defence establishments and demolition sites throughout Devon and Cornwall. “The Arocs is clearly a strong, well-built truck, while its low-emission Euro 6 engine can only enhance our environmental credentials and help to reduce our carbon footprint,” Orchard said. The firm’s New Actros, meanwhile, haul bulk tipping trailers to a steelworks in Cardiff, then collect metal for processing from customer locations in Hampshire and Dorset, before returning to base.
Games logistics plans move forwards
fter months of requesting detailed information regarding the Commonwealth Games 2014 to be provided to the freight industry, the Freight Transport Association said it is now ‘optimistic’ that plans will be delivered in time to ensure deliveries run smoothly during the event. The FTA had previously voiced its concern
over the lack of information, but it now appears the Games organisers are details are becoming available - including the Games Route Network (GRN); affected postcodes published; the Local Area Traffic Management & Parking Plans; and the Delivering to Venues Guide. “FTA is pleased to see that after months
of pushing for details, we are now getting the information we have been asking for,” said Chris MacRae, FTA’s head of policy - Scotland. “The freight and logistics industry needs to plan ahead of such events to help ensure continuity of deliveries, servicing to existing customers and to prepare for the additional freight requirements that the Games will bring.
“The freight and logistics industry will play a huge part in helping to deliver essential food, drink and supplies not only to the Games venues themselves, but also to the residents and businesses of the city,” MacRae added. “And in order to do so, it has been vital for freight and logistics operators to prepare well ahead.”
V8 milk float churns up the dust
W
ith a rising number of petrol vehicles switching to electric or hybrid power, a 1961 Morris milkfloat shows that going from electric to petrol has its merits. Sporting Falken’s latest WildPeak’s and Linam van tyres, Mel Smith’s milkfloat packs a full-fat powertrain with a 3.5-litre V8 Rover engine mounted behind the driver. Ahead of a summer season of vehicle shows and events, Team Falken’s drift driver Matt Carter got behind the wheel to churn up the dust at a test at Banbury Plant Hire’s yard. “Compared to my 600+ bhp Nissan competition car, this was still more of a pig than a cow to drift,” said the former British Drift Champion, Matt Carter. “With no
seatbelts or doors, it was a case of hanging on rather than hanging the tail out!” While much of the history of ‘Milky’ is not known to Oxfordshire-based Mel Smith, it is believed the conversion was undertaken by a wealthy enthusiast to tow a speedboat around London, with tales of it seen travelling at speed around the Capital. Now the Japanese manufacturer is able to supply the unusual profile tyres from its expanding range that covers a huge range of vehicles, Smith has opted for Falken’s WildPeak off-road and Linam van tyres. “We increasingly claim we offer a full range of tyres and patterns in the UK, from Minis to trucks,” said Falken’s UK director, Matt Smith. “Now, we can even say V8 milkfloats are not a problem – just try us!”

Actros is Apollo’s fast food favourite
A
pollo Foods has launched the latest additions to its all-Mercedes-Benz fleet – four New Actros 18-tonners with narrow StreamSpace cabs. Crowned Business of the Year at the Scottish Asian Business Awards 2013, Apollo Foods operates from the Nitshill Industrial Estate on the South Side of Glasgow. It supplies a wide range of chilled, frozen and ambient products to caterers, restaurants and fast food outlets as far north as Aberdeen, and south to Dumfries. A next-day delivery service is offered for orders placed before midnight. The company’s new trucks arrived via long-standing supplier Western Commercial and are the subject of seven-year MercedesBenz R&M contracts. All are New Actros 1842 models with 421 bhp straight-six engines mated to 12-speed PowerShift 3 automated transmissions. The aerodynamic StreamSpace cab is also available at 2.5m width, but Apollo Foods said it chose the 2.3 m version for enhanced manoeuvrability during multi-drop deliveries in urban areas. The trucks’ insulated, multi-temperature
bodies are by Tekbo of Glasgow and feature dual compartments with movable bulkheads for maximum operational efficiency. The bodies are fitted with central locking systems and internal and external cameras, allowing the operator to guarantee load security and integrity. Apollo Foods began trading in the late 1990s with three Merc Sprinter vans – one was driven by proprietor Saeed Mohammed, a second by his brother Ashraf Mohammed, and the third by Kamran Bashir. Today, as fleet manager, Bashir is responsible for 11 rigid trucks ranging in size from 26 to 7.5 tonnes gvw, as well as three Sprinters. The four New Actros represent additions to the fleet, having been commissioned to enable the company to meet growing demand for its products. “We were a driver short last week so I took one of the New Actros out myself and was very impressed,” said Kamran Bashir. “Mercedes-Benz has done a great job with this truck. The previous model was good, but the latest one is a lot better in terms of cab comfort – and I particularly like the new transmission, which is much smoother.”
Andover plant-puller makes O’Brien trio
C
ivil engineering and groundwork specialist O’Brien Contractors has taken delivery of its third Andover Trailers plant body, mounted to a new 32-tonne Scania 8x4 rigid. The company said it was so impressed with the reliability and durability of previous Andover bodies, it has opted to replace likefor-like. O’Brien Contractors has been providing a range of construction services around Leamington Spa for more than 50 years. The new vehicle, which is also mounted with a Fassi crane, replaces a previous Andover Trailers plant body that had been in operation for seven years. The bespoke LPPB32 body is fitted with 2.5 m long x 1 m wide hydraulic fold-flat ramps, together with hydraulic steady legs which ensure a stable platform for loading and unloading on the uneven grounds O’Brien frequently works on. Seven pairs of lashing points in the floor ensure loads of all sizes can be strapped down securely. “A combination of reliability and the increased residual value that a secondhand truck carries when it is fitted with an Andover body left us in no doubt about which bodybuilder to work with,” said Mick O’Brien, plant manager and director.
“Andover has not disappointed – the new equipment is performing very well transporting a wide variety of our own plant and equipment throughout the UK. As we operate this single plant truck, reliability is critical to the smooth daily running of our business.” The Fassi crane fitted to the plant body allows O’Brien to unload and load heavy equipment at delivery sites, but it also enables the company to use the vehicle as a mobile crane on construction sites. “We generally have 15 contracts running at any one time, so there is a lot of plant movement between these sites,” said O’Brien. “Dependability is without doubt imperative, so that’s why we continue to use Andover.” As with the majority of Andover Trailers plant bodies, this latest vehicle offers a deck height up to five inches lower than a regular plant body, enabling O’Brien to benefit from low ramp and beavertail approach angles – which makes it easier to load and unload machinery. To comply with strict health and safety regulations, the plant body features Andover’s fixed-width ‘working at height’ system, giving maximum protection to the operator. The new plant body is finished in a yellow livery and will be on the road six days a week.

uropean chilled, frozen and fresh produce distributor Solstor is expanding its fleet through a new five-year contract hire deal with Ryder. The company has taken delivery of 36 new 6x2 tractors from DAF and Mercedes, 21 tractors of which are replacements. The other 15 tractors, selected in consultation with Ryder, are part of Solstor’s strategic fleet expansion to meet growing demand across the UK. The 44-tonne tractors are fitted with telematics to enhance driver performance and improve fuel efficiency. They will operate out of Solstor’s locations in Peterborough and Dartford and will be maintained by local Ryder-approved service providers. retailers, producers and manufacturers. Its network stretches across mainland Europe, controlled from offices in the UK, Spain, Italy and Poland. The company’s UK operation consists of 160 temperature-controlled trailers and 100 tractors. More than 40 per cent of the tractors are supplied by Ryder on contract hire. Each tractor travels a daily average of over 300 miles delivering to pack houses and regional distribution centres across the UK. “To meet time-sensitive delivery slots demanded by our customers, we operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Solstor managing director, Graham Doe. “Providing a reliable and dependable service is critical to our business, and Ryder is a key partner in helping us maintain and grow our relationships with major retailers.”

I saved £264 on my car insurance, so I’m very pleased and Adelaide was also able to protect my No Claims Bonus.
Mr I. Leadbetter
“
My wife actually discovered Adelaide on the internet and suggested I try Adelaide for a car insurance quote as they look after LGV drivers. I happened to be finishing my CPC exam at the time and mentioned it to the trainer who said he’d not heard of this before. After insuring my car with Adelaide I was delighted to inform the trainer that this was a bona fide offer which he can recommend to the other drivers he trains.
Mr T. Horton
“
I was very happy with the car insurance price from Adelaide and also informed my Transport Manager to get the word out so that the other drivers in our company can benefit from this offer.
Mr A. Smith
“

I made a very good saving on my car insurance with Adelaide and as a result put up a poster at work to promote this unique service to the other 200 drivers in the company.
Mr S. McCarthy
