COLLETT’S CRANE BREAKS RECORDS

H

alifax-based family firm Collett Transport has taken ownership of a 8x4 MercedesBenz 4155 tractor unit with 205-tonne/m Effer 2055 crane – currently the largest of its kind in Europe. The outfit offers a powerful weight-to-ratio performance and utilises six boom extensions to provide a maximum reach and lift capacity of 30,000 kg at 4.51 m, and 8550 kg at 15.25 m. The hydraulic folding crane is based on a tractor unit with a maximum axle load of 16,500 kg and a gvw of 150 tonnes. Working closely with local supplier Atlas Cranes UK Ltd, Collett said it commissioned the new Effer due to its unrivalled strength and performance. It’s the largest machine of its kind – and the biggest project Atlas has so far undertaken. “The welcome addition of the new Effer 2055 into our fleet allows Collett Transport to take a huge leap forward within the industry, offering unique lifting capabilities and providing customers with a cost-effective solution for their heavy-lift requirements,” said Collett & Sons Ltd MD, David Collett. “The Effer 2055 crane is the very first crane of this capacity off the production line in Italy. Atlas Cranes are the recognised dealer in the UK for Effer, and as we have worked with them in the past, we were confident the acquisition of this machine would be the ideal addition to our fleet. “We are delighted with the results,” Collett concluded.

WALTON WALKS OFF WITH DRIVER CHALLENGE WIN

olvo Trucks has crowned truck driver Tommy Walton, who drives for Containerships UK (Ltd) out of Teesport, as the winner of its Driver Challenge 2014 after being nominated for entry into the competition by Ian McLean, Fuelwatch manager of Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland. Walton - who has been truck driving for 20 years - was presented with the prestigious trophy by Volvo Trucks MD Arne Knaben after taking part in the Driver Challenge final at Warwick. Knaben congratulated Tommy and all four of the Driver Challenge finalists. He said: “You are the top four drivers in the UK and Ireland. The results are very close. You are all winners and should be proud of how you have won your place in the final.” All four qualified to compete in the final, which came at the end of the 29-week-long competition that began in February. A total of 130 drivers from across the UK and Ireland took part in the competition, which focused on improving driver behaviour. The other Driver Challenge finalists were: Steven Taylor of Gresham Office Furniture, John Harrison of Edwin C Farrall, and Kevin Collyer of Laura Ashley. Walton lifted the Volvo Trucks Driver Challenge 2014 trophy at the end of an intensive day that saw the four finalists each driving both Volvo FH and FM artics on carefully planned set routes. The routes took in a wide range of road types, involving a total of three hours, 35 minutes’ driving time for each of the finalists. The specifications of the trucks used in the Driver Challenge 2014 final were as follows: Globetrotter-cabbed, 6x2 Volvo FH tractor units equipped with Euro 6 D13K 13-litre engines rated at 460 bhp and I-Shift automated gearboxes, each loaded to 42,780

Tommy Walton proudly displays his Driver Challenge 2014 trophy kg; and Globetrotter-cabbed FM 4x2 tractor units equipped with Euro 6 D11K, 11-litre engines rated at 410bhp and I-Shift automated gearboxes, each loaded to 39,450 kg. The results for the Driver Challenge 2014 final were announced to the assembled drivers and their supporters, with a live calculation of the rankings using Dynafleet telematic data exported from the trucks. The high standard of the finalists’ driving techniques was displayed in the overall results. For example, Walton spent 70 per cent of his driving time on the day ‘within economy’ parameters. Overall, all four used coasting for a ‘phenomenal’ average 14.1 per cent of the time as a fuel-saving technique during the final. Members of Volvo Trucks’ Driver Development team acted as in-cab invigilators during the driving periods and normal road speeds were maintained throughout. Tommy went on to represent the UK and Ireland at the Drivers’ Challenge Global Final in Gothenburg, Sweden - though the trophy for that event went to Austrian driver, Christian Scheiflinger.

Execs in the chair for charity soaking

Ice, ice baby: Employees ‘pour cold water on management ideas’ during Volvo’s Ice Bucket Challenge

T

op management at the Warwick head office of Volvo Trucks received a soaking recently as they took part in the Ice Bucket Challenge in aid of charity. As the price for taking part, Volvo said it is making a ‘generous’ donation to the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) charity. This is the UK equivalent of the American ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) charity that started the worldwide phenomenon that has gone viral across all media. Motor Neurone Disease is known as ALS in the USA. The decision to take part in the challenge was made unanimously by a team of 14 people. Volvo Trucks’ marketing & PR director Amanda Hiatt said the team, which comprised Volvo executives and managing directors from the dealer network, were motivated to take part following the untimely death in 2013 of much loved and highly regarded retired Volvo employee Martin Phippard.

“Martin was an amazing man,” Hiatt said. “He was loved and respected by customers and colleagues alike. He bore his struggles with Motor Neurone Disease with the tremendous strength of character he displayed throughout his life. “We did the Ice Bucket Challenge in memory of Martin and his wonderful family and friends in the transport community all over the country who did so much to support him. We are absolutely delighted that we were able to make a generous donation to MNDA in memory of a true friend of Volvo and of the transport industry.” For Volvo’s Ice Bucket Challenge, employees were invited to throw buckets of freezing water over the executive of their choice in return for a donation to MNDA. Finally, in the tradition of the Ice Bucket Challenge, Volvo Trucks nominated the executive management teams at rival truck manufacturers DAF, Mercedes and Scania to take part.

Men are main culprits in fuel fiascos

R

esearch from the RAC has revealed male drivers are more likely than female drivers to run out of fuel – or put the wrong type in the tank. While one in five (23 per cent) – or an estimated 6.6m – UK motorists admit to having run out of fuel at least once, around a fifth (22 per cent) more men than women said they have fallen foul of an empty tank. Of those who say they have been left high and dry by ‘playing petrol or diesel roulette’ and losing, 61 per cent were men, in contrast to just 39 per cent who were women. Although three quarters (76 per cent) of the motoring population claim never to have been caught out, men are also slightly more likely to be repeat offenders – six per cent compared four per cent. RAC research revealed men are also more likely than women to put the wrong type of fuel into their tank – a mistake that can cost upwards of £200 to put right. The RAC said that last year, it dealt with around 22,000 ‘out of fuel’ cases and 30,000 misfuelling incidents – which equates to an estimated bill to motorists of £40m. In terms of misfuelling mishaps, men are statistically more likely to suffer a forecourt

fiasco than women, with 13 per cent saying they have done so in contrast to just eight per cent of women. The RAC said while the reason for men’s ‘fuel’ishness is unclear (it may be as simple as they tend to drive more miles per year than women), what is certain is the number of ‘out of fuel’ incidents increases when fuel prices are rising – presumably because they are trying to make it to their preferred filling station with the lowest prices. “Both running out of fuel and misfuelling can be costly mistakes,” said RAC’s technical director, David Bizley. “Running out of fuel can result in motorists being stranded in dangerous places on the road, and misfuelling can be very expensive – particularly if a vehicle suffers damage as a result of the wrong fuel being sent around the system. “Regularly running a vehicle on a minimum of petrol or diesel can cause a number of fuel system problems, but of greater concern from the findings of our research is the fact more than one in 10 (12 per cent) of people surveyed say they have run out of fuel on the motorway, putting themselves in a very dangerous situation unnecessarily,” he concluded.

Dartford Crossing in a We’ve helped make secure parking easy, now let us put you in the fast lane. From late November 2014, drivers of SNAP Account registered vehicles will be able to pass through Dartford Crossing and automatically charge it to their SNAP Account. No tag is required. All that is necessary is for the vehicle to be registered to a SNAP Account which has opted in for this service. Opting in: When you open a SNAP Account you can use it for parking, depot parking and washing. You may restrict use of any of these services if you choose. Further to this, you can also choose to add Dartcharge as well as vehicle recovery and repair (including curtain repair and tyre replacements) to your SNAP Account by opting in and saving time and money by bringing most of your vehicle expenses under one invoice. In order to do this, the account owner must call 01603 777242 and request the service they would like. These services will then be added to the account with immediate effect. Company cars and vans can also be added to the SNAP Account for Dartcharge, allowing you to put all your company vehicles in the fast lane.

Letter PLAYING THE GAME It is about time we started playing the Europeans at their own game. The Dutch are allegedly extending the introduction of the Driver CPC, as are the Germans and the French. It is now in our industry’s interest to ban any foreign driver arriving at our ports without said DQC card. It bothers me somewhat that we are yet again the only country to adhere to this edict! On a personal note, it doesn’t actually affect me as I am a coach driver, but I hate seeing our wonderful transport industry being decimated by European laws that the Europeans themselves choose

to ignore. We need a government to stand up for us for once. I can say that if a British driver arrived in Calais without his card, it is almost a foregone certainty he/she would be turned back by some petty French customs officer. When approaching Passport Control, the first thing should be: “Passport and Driver Card please.” Big signs saying ‘No card, No entry’ should be erected at both Calais and Dover. This is not a restriction of trade, merely upholding European law! David Cameron-Young Abingdon

The writer of this issue’s Star Letter will win a fantastic McNally’s Crane Hire Volvo FH 6x4 model with flatbed trailer and container load, worth £84.99, from Corgi’s Hauliers of Renown range.

DCPC PROTEST

I know from before that many drivers are not happy with the current DCPC and consider it a waste of their time and money. Many are possibly also sick to death about hearing one thing or other about it, and just got on with it, received their DQC and have forgotten all about it. Well, it will not go away and soon you will be having to think about doing another 35 hours of training. We protested some time ago and failed to bring about any change or influence them in power. But we MUST NOT give in. Now with

Hi there, I just wanted to share a few of my photos that I took at the recent Wessex Truck Show. Cally Billingham By email Thanks Cally – your photos are superb! –ed.

SELF-DRIVING CONCERNS

It sounds like it was an impressive demonstration when Merc showed off its ‘self-driving’ truck (Truckstop News, Autumn). I can remember when they brought in the EPS semi-automatic gearbox. There was an accident or two when the gearbox left loaded trucks in neutral going downhill. Fast-forward to the present day and the Axor issued to me by Norbert Dressingtable. Waiting at roundabouts for a break in the traffic, right at the moment you want move, the gearbox shifted to neutral – this happened a couple of times. Another thing that happened twice was on the motorway. I run car parts

on a night trunk, so there I am heading back to the depot, cruise control on, Book at Bedtime is on the radio and all is well in my world. The truck bleeped and started slowing down. I put my foot on the loud pedal and looked at the dash: the cruise control was off and the gearbox was in manual mode. At least it was still going – as long as I kept my foot on the accelerator, I was still heading home. Although it was supposed to be in manual mode, the gearbox wouldn’t come out of top gear. I decided to keep it going and get as near to the depot as I could. About 20 minutes from base, I rolled down a slip road and stopped. After switching off and restarting, everything was OK. So, would I feel safe sitting in a truck on ‘Highway Pilot’? If, after all these years, Mercedes still hasn’t got a gremlin-free semi-automatic gearbox, the answer has to be: no way. After the journey l had today from Warminster to Leadenham, l feel l had to get in touch with you. When l was a trucker from 1962 to 1999, we were known as Knights of the Road. In my driving years, l drove everything from 10-ton gravel lorries, swan necks, beaver tails, low-loaders, tippers, fridges, flatbeds, mobile cranes – and we drove our trucks carefully, considerately and safely. Today l was stopped from overtaking by truck drivers deliberately blocking my view of the road ahead. As l pulled out to see the road ahead, they pulled out as well. l know this is right, as they were watching me in their mirror. It happened six times on the Fosse Way, and their actions were not only inconsiderate, but very dangerous. Then, on the Newark-on-Trent bypass (it is two lanes, but very wide), l was following this truck and the driver was watching me in his mirror. He was staying to the left of the lane, so l started to pass him. He let me get so far, then started to pull over to the centre of the road. Then, to make matters even more dangerous, the truck coming towards me started to come across his lane towards me with his lights blazing and horn blaring. Now, these actions amount to bullying and harassment and dangerous driving. So Knights of the Road no more – Hogs of the Road, more like. I would like you to print this in your next issue, as it may make modern truckers think twice before they start their bullying tactics. I drove trucks for 37 years and l must have driven over a million miles. In all that time, l never used my vehicle size to dictate to other road users, l never had an accident, and never got a ticket. Nick Johnston (Old Nick), A very disappointed ex-trucker, By email

Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. For a second and/or subsequent offence to multiply accordingly, for example, second offence in a commercial vehicle 2 x 21 days.

The legislation defines this offence as follows: No person is to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using a handheld mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.

following: sending or receiving oral or written messages; sending or receiving facsimile documents; sending or receiving still or moving images; and providing access to the internet. If you’re caught using a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving, you can expect to get an automatic fixed penalty notice. This means you’ll get three penalty points on your driving licence and have to pay a fine of £60. However, your case may go to court. If it does, you may also face disqualification from driving on top of a maximum fine of £1000. If you were driving a PCV or heavy goods vehicle, you could face a maximum fine of £2500. Also if the matter were considered of a serious nature you could face prosecution for other road transport related offences, which carry more serious sentences.

This month, I am looking at the offence of using a vehicle without insurance. In particular, what the legislation is in relation to the offence, what are the sentencing options and what the court will consider when dealing with such an offence. I will go on to look at the statutory defence and whether a ‘special reasons’ argument can be submitted to avoid a licence- being endorsed. 16 - Hinchcliffes Truckstop News November 332 issue - Accident Spot Feature .indd 1 To start at the beginning, the offence under consideration is using a vehicle without insurance. Under section 143(1)(a) Road Traffic Act 1988, ‘a person must not use a motor vehicle on a road or other public place unless there is in force in relation to the use of that vehicle by that persona policy of insurance’. Under section 145, the policy must be issued by an authorised insurer and must insure for death or bodily injury to any person, or damage to property, caused by, or arising out of, the use of a vehicle on a road in Great Britain – ie, third-party insurance. This is the overview, but is worth looking at the actual legislation. The legislation for the most common offences under Section 143 is as follows: Users of motor vehicles to be insured or secured against third-party risks. (1) Subject to the provisions of this Part of this Act – (a) a person must not use a motor vehicle on a road or other public place unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act, and (b) a person must not cause or permit any other person to use a motor vehicle on a road, or other public place, unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that other person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act. (2) If a person acts in contravention of subsection (1) above they are guilty of an offence.

CK TIPS UP FOR NEWGEM

E

ast Midlands Renault Trucks distributor RH Commercial Vehicles has supplied a Leicester-based company with a new CK 8x4 truck in time for its silver anniversary next year. Newgem was established in 1990 and specialises in dry stone and tarmac deliveries across the East Midlands from its site on Townsend Lane in Coalville. After recently taking on a limited company status, Newgem has invested £106k in the new Renault CK, with plans to purchase another in October. “When it came to replacing one of our trucks, RHCV was on hand to give us the most suitable truck for our requirements,” said Newgem partner, Graham Middlebrook. “Renault’s new range of CK trucks fulfills our needs perfectly – they really have listened to the customer. A lighter tare weight and greater ground clearance

make it a much more comfortable ride. Our drivers are also enjoying the larger cab space – another fantastic adaptation.” Simon Bailey, sales manager at RHCV, added: “We’ve been working with Newgem for two-and-a-half years now. Before, it was totally against buying French trucks. But by the end of this year, over half of its fleet will be Renault! This really is a testament to the excellent quality of the trucks that customers consistently respond positively to.” RHCV is an authorised selling agent for Renault Trucks and provides new and used sales, service and parts for the full Renault Trucks range, as well as allmakes parts and servicing for commercial vehicles. It offers a full range of sales and aftermarket services including parts sales, dedicated paint shop and a designated MoT bay.

RHA BACKS DCPC CRACKDOWN T he Road Haulage Association (RHA) has said it has welcomed the robust approach of enforcement authorities towards those who have failed to meet the requirement of the Driver CPC Directive. Since September 10, it is an offence for many truck drivers to continue driving if they have not completed 35 hours of approved training in the past five years. The rule applies to professional truck drivers who gained their vocational licence before September 2009. “Basically, those involved in professional road haulage have got this issue sorted out in good time,” said an RHA statement. “If there are firms that have still not done so, we have to question whether they are suitable to be

The quality of the interior and fittings for us and the horses are absolutely amazing.” DAF UK marketing manager, Phil Moon, added: “I think this is one of the most beautiful, unusual and definitely the most luxurious conversions of a DAF LF I’ve ever seen. It’s also a lovely demonstration of how versatile the new LF is for coachbuilders thanks to its new, completely flat chassis and electrical system.”

operating large, heavy vehicles.” The Association said drivers who are not qualified can become qualified in one week, so they can get back to delivering goods legally. “That should not be an insurmountable burden,” it said. “Drivers and their employers have had plenty of time to get the necessary training completed. Some drivers are having problems as a result of licence renewal delays at DVLA, but enforcement bodies are taking account of that. “The DVSA and the traffic commissioners are fully justified and have the RHA’s support in enforcing the law from the start,” the Association concluded.

TOP-CLASS SCANIA WATCHES THE RUBBER W

Tyre pressure monitoring system was fitted to ensure firm’s new Scania outfit had maximum uptime

J Roadmarkings has invested half a million pounds in a new state-of-theart hydro-blasting machine based on a Scania 8x6 chassis – and has included an automated tyre monitoring system to help boost the vehicle’s uptime. The firm said tyre failure was a major potential problem for the new truck as it would be working mainly on road construction sites and rural roads. To overcome this, the company fitted the Scania with the ContiPressureCheck Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). “With this level of investment, we need to keep this machine working,” said transport and workshop manager, Scott Logan. “And we often work to tight schedules involving road or lane closures, so it’s important the truck is in the right place at the right time. “Suffering a tyre failure can be very disruptive and severely impact on our operations, and we don’t want to let down our customers or road users,” Logan added. “With the help of Best Tyres of Stoke-on-Trent, which supplies our Continental tyres, we fitted the system to our new Euro 6 Scania in the workshop at our Stafford depot.” Logan said the installation was

straightforward, with sensors being fitted inside each tyre on the four axles to transmit data on the temperature and pressure to a screen inside the cab. “This gives the driver the assurance his tyres are at the correct pressure and alerts him to any potential problem, such as a slow loss of pressure that could lead to a complete tyre failure,” he said. “Because you get an early warning of a problem, this enables prompt action to be taken which may avoid the cost and time involved in fitting a new tyre.” WJ Roadmarkings said it is hoping the system will raise driver awareness of the importance of keeping a check on their tyre pressures. This, it said, should prevent punctures going unnoticed and stop tyres being run underinflated – which can cause serious casing damage and eventually a tyre blowout. “Our drivers appreciate the system and are now asking when we will be fitting it across our fleet of some 70 vehicles, which include DAF and Volvo trucks,” Logan concluded. “We already have over a dozen systems either fitted or on order, and we will progressively make this a standard feature on all of our trucks.”

TC REFUSES PLANT FIRM LICENCE ONLINE LICENCE CHECK SYSTEM GAINS APPROVAL S

T

he UK representative body for fleet operators, ACFO, has said it is optimistic the DVLA’s new online driver licence validation checking service will meet with the approval of operators. At the invitation of the DVLA, ACFO members recently attended a private workshop during which they were able to put the new system – known as Share My Driving Record (SMDR) – through its paces. The ACFO members - all potential users of the system - who attended the hourlong one-to-one workshop held at short notice in London rated its ease of use, straight-forward navigation and functionality – though they suggested a number of enhancements the DVLA pledged to take on board. The DVLA has already confirmed its online driver licence validation checking service will at least initially be free to fleets when it goes live to coincide with the abolition of the paper counterpart of the photocard driving licence by January 1, 2015. The SMDR will enable employers to

view online individual employees’ eligibility to drive and the number of penalty points on their licence. However, among the enhancements ACFO members suggested could be made to the SMDR service ahead of its launch were: the ability to view a photo of the licence holder, their name and address, licence issue number and photo card expiry date; and an ‘alert’ as soon as a driver receives additional points on their licence, so fleet managers don’t have to wait possibly months until the next electronic check to find out. ACFO said it had previously been concerned about security of the site, but members said their fears had been allayed on viewing the system. Drivers are currently able to access the information the DVLA holds on their licence by inputting their driving licence number, National Insurance number and postcode. However, it remains to be seen which access controls will apply to the SMDR. DVLA said it is trialling a number of options and will continue to obtain feedback pending a final decision.

cottish traffic commissioner Joan Aitken has refused to give Inverness firm Northburgh Ltd an operator’s licence after it used vehicles without permission. The industry regulator said there had been a pattern of unauthorised use over many months, and concluded director Malcolm Leslie had been “self serving” in the evidence he had given to enforcement officials investigating the illegal use of vehicles. This included giving a traffic examiner one account of events one day, and a different version three days later. She added Leslie had betrayed the trust

placed in him at previous public inquiries, when he appeared before the traffic commissioner in connection with another business, MK Leslie Ltd. On that occasion, Aitken concluded Leslie had allowed unlawful operating by other companies for almost a year, and that he gained financially from the arrangement. Refusing the application by Northburgh Ltd, the traffic commissioner said: “This case smacks of history repeating itself – with role reversal – it is Mr Leslie this time who needed someone with an operator’s licence.” The company proposed to operate from Seafield Road, Inverness.

Volvo Trucks has lifted the lid on its all-new FH series of heavy trucks, designed with the driver in mind and a focus on fuel economy.

MAN VS FOOD STYLE OMLETTE CHALLENGE 12 egg omelette, fillings and chips, against the clock.

Details were scarce when we went to press ahead of the official launch on September 5, but the Swedish manufacturer told Truckstop News the new FHs will be available in both Euro 5 and 6 form, and pack a vast amount of upgrades and improvements. Leading the charge for fuel efficiency is Volvoʼs new I-See function (Truckstop News, issue 301). The system, which works alongside the I-Shift automated transmission, is claimed to cut consumption by five per cent by storing information about the route the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure progress is as economical as possible,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Truck Corporation. An additional five per cent saving in fuel use is possible with Volvo Trucksʼ new Fuel Package. This package encompasses training and monthly assistance – Fuel Advice – and its aim is to cut fuel costs by changing driving styles and increasing knowledge of how to drive for maximum fuel-efficiency. Volvoʼs new I-Torque Euro 6 driveline – production of which for the European market will get under way in autumn 2013 – should make for additional fuel savings. “ITorque reduces fuel consumption by up to With its new Volvo FH series, Volvo is ʻpushing four the envelopeʼ in re-defining what a premium per cent. Together with I-See and other minor truck can offer. improvements, the result is fuel consumption can drop by up to 10 per cent. For the average truck, this can equate to a saving of up to 4100 litres of fuel a year,” Nilsson continued. On-road manners have received much attention, and Volvo is claiming the new trucks offer exceptional handling thatʼs much like a car. “To put things into perspective, we can even offer independent front suspension, although initially only on left-hand drive vehicles. This world-first takes handling to unsurpassed levels in the truck world,” Nilsson said.

We Urgently require Professional Class 1 (C+E) Drivers

Also of benefit to drivers are improved seats and driving position, optimised to provide a better view of the road. This is aided by an increase in the cabʼs usable window area and an innovative slimmer rear-view mirror design. Stalks and controls are arranged in priority so the most important ones are now closest to the driver, and the steering wheel now has a neck tilt function – another world-first in the truck world. Safety is high on the agenda, An all-new cab structure features more upright A-pillars, which give the cab an additional 1 m3 of interior space. This means an extra 300 litres (10.5 cu ft) of storage capacity, as well as greater comfort on board.“The cab is optimised both for work and leisure time,” Nilsson said. “A better bed, integrated parking cooler, new lighting and low noise levels among other features, all increase the chance of pleasant relaxation and a good nightʼs sleep, which in turn means drivers are less tired and more alert.” Production of the Volvo FH will start in spring 2013 for the European market.

Volvo vies for NFT contract

V

olvo Trucks and Hartshorne Group have announced they have been jointly awarded the exclusive vehicle supply partnership contract for chilled food and drink logistics company, NFT. The contract, which is for the exclusive supply of all 6x2 and 4x2 tractor units, involves an order for 100 trucks in the next two years. All are replacements for existing fleet vehicles; any growth will further be added to this exclusive deal. The exact split between two and three axle tractors is to be decided. “We conducted a thorough tender process with four vehicle manufacturers,” said Andrew De’Vere, NFT managing director of shared user operations. “Volvo came out top of all suppliers, and in particular innovation and technology, which are key attributes that NFT are looking for in its partners.” NFT said fuel performance from two Euro 6 demonstrators also played a key role in the decision. Specification of the trucks, which are all new-series Euro 6 Globetrotter FM tractor units, includes Volvo’s D11K, 11-litre engine fitted with the Volvo Engine Brake and rated at 450 bhp. All are equipped with I-Shift gearboxes and I-See fuel-saving software, and are equipped with Dynafleet telematics. They are also maintained on a Gold Contract, which includes Volvo’s Uptime Assurance promise.

Stobart goes with Goodyear

T

yre manufacturer Goodyear Dunlop has won a five-year contract with Eddie Stobart which will see the logistics firm fit its 2500 tractor units and over 4000 trailers with all-new Goodyear KMax and FuelMax products, in addition to utilising Goodyear’s roadside assistance and tyre maintenance experts TruckForce. “Goodyear had a very consultative approach, building and flexing their solution to match our business needs,” said Eddie Stobart MD, David Pickering. “The team took the time to understand the intricacies of our operation and what product and service package was going to prove the most effective.” Pickering said the Stobart logistics operation is large and complex. “At any one time we have up to 38,000 tyres on the road, travelling up and down the country, so an efficient and effective product and service package is vital to our business,” he said. Goodyear’s KMax and FuelMax range was launched last year, and the manufacturer said the range helps lower operating costs due to the tyres’ extended mileage and low rolling resistance. In the last 12 months, Goodyear Dunlop has added the fleets of Turners of Soham, Hanson, Lloyd Fraser, Pollock Scotrans, A&D logistics as well as retaining the business of DHL, Elddis Transport, Cartwrights and Hargreaves.

A

lcoholic beverages specialist Drinks Enterprises has taken delivery of five Euro 5 derogated trucks in its first contract hire deal with Ryder. The company has been hiring trucks from Ryder on short- and long-term rental for nearly two decades. The company switched to a five-year contract hire agreement early in 2014 to secure some of Ryder’s remaining stocks of Euro 5 derogated trucks. The contract fixes the company’s rental and maintenance costs for the next five years. Following a consultation with Ryder, the bodies of the 26-tonne curtainsided trucks have been custom built to a low-height specification. The trucks are roughly 30 cm lower than standard height so they can pass under low bridges and tunnels in and around London. Ryder helped specify the truck bodies in collaboration with the customer and a third-party bodybuilder to ensure all requirements were met. Founded in 1997, Drinks Enterprises is a family-run business dedicated to serving small shops and off-licences across London, the Home Counties and the South Coast. The five trucks will be based at the company’s depot in Southall, West London. Ryder’s Feltham-based support team will be performing preventative maintenance on the trucks out of hours. “We are delighted to have secured some of Ryder’s remaining derogated Euro 5 trucks on contract hire,” said Drinks Enterprises co-founder and managing director, Rashpal Jabble. “Fixing our transportation costs for the next five years gives us more certainty over our outgoings and helps with future planning for the business.” Ryder sales and marketing director, Robin White, added: “There has been intense interest in our stocks of derogated Euro 5 trucks, but we do still have some models remaining to support companies in the transition to Euro 6 emissions engines.”

DVSA launches Stopper trial on M6

T

he Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced it is trialling a joint working pilot with Highways Agency (HA) to stop commercial vehicles at the roadside. As reported in the DVSA’s Moving On blog, Highways Agency traffic officers will be trained in stopping officer duties – though DVSA was keen to point out incident management will remain their priority. It said HA officers will be supporting, rather than replacing, DVSA stopping

officers during the trial. DVSA said the pilot began on September 1 and will run for four months near Doxey on the M6. The aim, it said, is to assess if joint working improves on DVSA’s ability to target high-risk vehicles, and how the additional demands will affect HA traffic officers. DVSA said it wanted to inform truck drivers travelling near Doxey from September this year that they may be stopped by a HA traffic officer, rather than a DVSA officer.

Crane truck lifts for Lynch

L

ondon-based L Lynch Plant Hire and Haulage Ltd has taken delivery of a new 80-tonne gvw Renault Range C-520 6x4 with a Fassi F660RA crane. Supplied by Renault Trucks London, with the crane supplied by Fassi main agent Transloader Services, the Range C is a bespoke addition to Lynch’s 150-strong Renault, Volvo and DAF haulage fleet. According to Lynch, its relationship with Renault Trucks London and the vehicle’s performance during test drives were the key factors in its decision-making process. The Range C will be based in Lynch’s London depot and will work on new ventures with rail construction companies across the UK, including moving 60 ft rail. “With the UK expanding its rail network, including HS2, Lynch wants to be one step ahead of the competition,” said the firm’s transport manager Keith Talbot. “With such a unique and specialist vehicle in our fleet, I believe we are the first plant hire company offering one of this type. “As an ex-driver myself, I know what I’m looking for – and although I haven’t personally bought Renault Trucks before, I have been really convinced by the new range, which I think has been much improved,” Keith added. “When we tested the new Range C, we were particularly impressed by the new gearbox, the traction and grip; the Renault just kept ploughing on regardless.” The firm said it was so impressed, it has added further purchases, with an order bank in the region of an additional 80-plus Renault trucks. “The new Euro 6 vehicles are meeting our demands from 32-tonne tippers to the new tractor units,” Keith concluded.

SNAP sorts new Dartford crossing tolls

F

rom November, instead of queuing to pay a toll at the Dartford Crossing, drivers will pass through the toll without slowing down and an ANPR system will then make sure the vehicle is recorded. The charge will not be sent to the driver, but rather it is their responsibility to remember to pay at a later time. As the driver, you then have until midnight the next day to pay the toll. If you miss this short deadline, as the owner of the vehicle you will be immediately slapped with a £70 penalty charge notice (PCN), less than 48 hours after passing through the toll. To avoid having to remember to call or go online to pay every time you cross the toll, you can open an account with Dartcharge. This account allows you to pass through the

ANPR system and pay using a pre-loaded account. The drawback, of course, is that if you fail to keep this account topped up, or if you misjudge the amount you have left in the account by even a few pence, you’ll get a £70 fine. Imagine that your accounts department forgets to top up the account one week, and you can multiply that fine by every vehicle of yours that uses the toll. To make it easy for commercial fleet operators, SNAP Account is including Dartcharge within its offering. It can guarantee that by using your SNAP Account to pay the toll, you will never be at risk of a PCN. SNAP bills you weekly for any services used (which can also include parking, washing, weighbridges and roadside recovery and

repair), and you then pay for these services. You can log in at any time and see which of your vehicles have used which services, giving you full control and accountability of your nonfuel expenses. To avoid any PCNs when the Dartford crossing system changes in November, you will need to either register for a Dart-tag account and make very sure to keep it topped up, or register for a SNAP Account and opt in for Dartcharge. Then you can simply pay for any services used at the end of each week. It costs nothing to join SNAP and you only pay for what you use. SNAP Account is a completely free to use service for fleet operators which over 500 fleets use to control and streamline their vehicle expenses.

Roads upgrade for new power plant

T

ransport links in Bridgwater and Taunton will be upgraded with £2.8m worth of funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) to ensure proper infrastructure is in place before the construction of the UK’s first nuclear power plant in over 20 years. The funding will go towards fixing potholes and general roads maintenance to avoid disruptive road works while the plant is being built. Rail stations at Bridgwater and Taunton

will also be improved to allow for greater passenger numbers and better connections with other modes of transport. Transport minister Baroness Kramer said: “The improved transport infrastructure for Somerset will support the area’s long-term economic growth by providing public transport and cycle access to a nationally-important construction project. “The Hinkley Point C power station will employ at least 5000 people, generate business for local suppliers, and comes with

significant investment in training and skills for local people. Transport to the power plant will be easier, safer and more environmentally friendly following these improvements.” The government said Hinkley Point C will play a crucial role in the UK’s future energy security. The transport schemes have been agreed by the Department for Transport and the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which is made up of local councils and representatives from the private sector.

Menzies a safe bet for bookies

M

enzies Distribution has bagged a major contract delivering betting slips to two of the biggest bookmakers in the country. The logistics specialist sealed agreements to deliver betting slips for Coral and Ladbrokes’ across their UK branches, which Menzies said marked notable wins for the company in a new sector. As a third-party logistics partner to Citipost, Menzies is using its existing network of warehouses and vehicle fleet to deliver 200 million betting slips per year to 1800 shops. “Supplying two of the largest bookmakers in the UK is a significant step for us, as we increase our customer base in the general logistics market,” said Grant Jordan, supply chain manager at Menzies Distribution. “These betting slips are the lifeblood of a bookmaker’s shop and neither Coral nor Ladbrokes were prepared to take a gamble with their delivery service. “Using our fleet of 2600 vehicles and established network of warehouses and hubs, we’re aiming to help businesses of all shapes and sizes move goods from one place to another as effectively, safely and quickly as possible,” Jordan concluded.
