Scania to bring Euro 6 gas truck to UK
S
cania has said it is planning to introduce the UK’s first dedicated gas-powered Euro 6 truck when a 340 bhp P340 LA4x2MNA tractor unit arrives in Great Britain later this year. Powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), the vehicle offers low fuel consumption, high operational efficiency and ultra-low emissions of carbon dioxide. Reflecting the trend currently being seen in the United States, a second tractor unit configured to operate on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is also scheduled for the UK. “With more and more operators seeking alternatives to conventional diesel, gas is proving to be an increasingly popular choice,” said Scania (Great Britain) UK truck sales director, Martin Hay. “Whereas operators have so far been restricted to dual-fuel diesel/gas vehicles, our vehicle now enables customers to fully reap the benefits entirely gas-powered trucks offer.” Scania said its gas engines are designed to provide the same performance as a comparative diesel engine. Power ratings for Euro 6 units are 280 and 340 bhp, with torque ratings of 1350 and 1600 Nm respectively.
Periodic Driver CPC Training from Mercedes-Benz real training, not box ticking. Scania’s Euro 6 gas engine comes in 280 and 340 bhp flavours Scania launched the world’s first Euro 6 gas-powered truck, which entered service with Swedish operator, Bring Logistics, in June 2013. In the UK, gas-powered Scania buses have been working since April 2013, when Reading Buses became the first operator to adopt them. To ensure a readily-available supply of fuel, an in-house CNG filling station has been installed at the company’s premises. The filling station sources its gas from the main, with every litre taken being replaced by a litre of biogas – thereby effectively making Reading’s a carbon-neutral operation.
Profits rise for driver recruitment firm
T
emporary and permanent driver provider Drivers Direct has reported an increase of £16.2 million on turnover as a result of growing demand for well-qualified temporary and permanent commercial drivers to service the recovering economy. The firm said the positive results (up 20 per cent) mean it will be reinvesting in the business, opening six new offices and creating an additional 180 jobs across the UK. The company, which is headquartered In Runcorn, will be investing more than £1m into the six new offices located in Liverpool, Swindon, Derby, Durham, Leicester and Romford. All offices will aim to have regular jobs for more than 30 drivers by Christmas, and will work together to serve a growing blue chip client base across the UK. The strong performance has also allowed
the company to further invest in staff, as existing employees have been promoted to manage the new branches. In addition, the company has also implemented a new IT system for its drivers to better track and manage their timesheets. Managing director Gethin Roberts said: “We’re pleased to report strong results and are thrilled to be opening six offices this financial year. The positive figures will allow us to make further investments in the company, extend our offer into new markets and grow our customer base.” Established in 2002, Drivers Direct covers all driver classes from chauffeurs and forklift drivers, right through to LGV Class 1 and 2 drivers. It supplies more than 700 drivers a week to clients from across the public and private sectors, and the company currently has a network of 20 branches across the UK.
TfL hikes up London congestion charge
T
r ansport for London (TfL) has announced a 17 per cent increase in the London Congestion Charge for companies on the fleet scheme in a move that has been branded an unfair tax on businesses which have no option other than to use the city’s roads. The Freight Transport Association said the hike is prejudiced against freight operators, as the rise for hauliers is higher than the increase for casual users. “Commercial vehicles making essential deliveries, such as keeping the capital’s shelves stocked and supplying London’s hospitals, should be exempt from the Congestion Charge,” said FTA’s head of policy for London, Natalie Chapman. “But not only are they forced to pay to use the road network in Central London, they have now been unfairly clobbered with a bigger rise than casual users of the scheme.” FTA said it supported the aim of the Congestion Charge in deterring discretionary
or non-essential journeys where the individual has the option to choose an alternative time or mode of travel in order to reduce congestion, CO2 emissions and improve air quality. But it argued it is not feasible to deliver goods on public transport, nor are alternative modes practical for the door-to-door deliveries that central London requires. Additionally, there are no charge-free breaks in the daytime to encourage deliveries to be made outside of rush hour. Prior to the Congestion Charge starting at 07.00 Monday to Friday, the movements of heavy goods vehicles are restricted by the London Lorry Control Scheme (LLCS) – also known as the ‘London Lorry Ban’. The LLCS then starts again at 21.00, leaving only three nonrestricted hours a day in central London from 18.00 to 21.00 and only Saturday mornings at weekends – which the FTA said is clearly not enough to support the capital’s needs for goods deliveries.
Working together, we can help build a better industry for all. At Mercedes-Benz we like to do things properly and we think you do too. So when it comes to driver training, we always aim to go that bit further and deliver a product that is ahead of the rest. That’s why our training is more about improving every aspect of driver and industry professionalism, and not just about reaching a legislation standard. We’ve put a lot of thought and effort into our courses too, and not only are they fully interactive and interesting, we’ve made them enjoyable too. Come see. Come train with us. We’re professionals and we think you are too. For more information call 0800 090 090, or visit www.mercedes-benzdrivertraining.co.uk.

K biscuit manufacturer United Biscuits (UB) is adding 62 new longer trailers to its fleet in a move it hopes will reduce its carbon emissions and improve operation efficiency. The new trailers are 15.65 m long – 2 m longer than standard existing trailers – and can carry 60 pallets of biscuits instead of the previous 52 pallets. By carrying larger loads, the trailers are expected to save 450,000 truck miles on UK roads each year, and reduce carbon emissions by 618 tonnes over the same period. UB will operate the trailers under a special licence as part of a 10-year Department for Transport trial. The trailers are based at the biscuit

RANGE D TURNS TIMBER TRUCK amily-run timber merchant Basildon Timber Ltd has taken delivery of a Renault Range D10 low 4x2 210 bhp with aluminium flatbed body and manual gearbox. Supplied by Renault Trucks Essex, the bright-yellow Range D replaces Basildon Timber’s previous 06-plate 7.5-tonne Renault Midlum and marks a move up to 10 tonnes to take advantage of valuable extra payload and productivity. The Range D undertakes timber deliveries across Essex and into London for both trade and domestic customers. When asked about his decision to select the 10-tonne Range D, Basildon Timber managing director John Cordery said: “Our old 7.5-tonne Midlum was so reliable, it never let us down and was still running well – but with the LEZ charges for delivering inside the M25, we needed to look at Euro 6. “We decided to stay with Renault Trucks and go up to 10 tonnes with the Range D, which gives us more payload with all the

firm’s National Distribution Centre in Leicestershire. They will regularly depart with 60 pallets of biscuit varieties to be delivered to customers, and return fully loaded with biscuits and cake from one of UB’s factories – reducing empty miles. They will also be liveried in line with the company’s recent Jacob’s and McVitie’s advertising campaigns. Three different iterations of the McVitie’s ‘Sweeet’ advertising campaign are used on 38 trailers. They reflect three animals in the campaign: a tarsier (a small primate), a puppy and a kitten. The remaining 24 UB said it can carry eight more pallets of biscuits on its longer trailers
trailers are branded with the Jacob’s ‘Snack Happy’ campaign. “These liveried trailers will make our company more efficient and more sustainable, and in a way that supports our major marketing campaign,” said Kevin McGurk, UB’s group supply chain director. “They are a very visible example of how we are working across the organisation to make UB ever more competitive. The addition of the longer trailers builds on UB’s ‘Fewer and Friendlier Miles’ campaign launched in 2006. Since then, UB said it has removed 20 million truck miles from UK roads and has reduced its CO2 emissions from transport by 40 per cent.

SAVE ALEX LESTER!
I am sending you this email as you may have heard the plans that Radio 2 have from October this year, which is that they are planing to move Alex Lester from weekday nights to weekend nights and he will lose one night. So I have set up a facebook and twitter page, and also there is a petition taking place in the hope the BBC will halt these plans. The BBC plans to run repeats of some daytime shows between 3 am-5 am. It says they are all about money and the fact they need to make cuts, but I do think there is more to it than they are coming out with. Alex has been with Radio 2 for some 20 years and this is how they treat him. On our facebook page, we now have over 2400 likes and these numbers keep going up each day. We are asking if you could print this letter, as there is many many people who are unhappy with these plans.
Alex has a very big fan base, many of whom are overnight truck drivers, and many get in touch with Alex during the show. We must not let these plans happen and we will make sure that the BBC listens to the people who pay for it. I would be very grateful if you could run this letter and very grateful if you could print a link to our campaign facebook page: www.facebook.com/savethebesttimeofthedayshow Richard Warner By email Thanks for your email, Ricahrd - and yours is not the only one we have received on the matter (see below)! We’ve issued a story on our webpage and the Trucking magazine facebook page in support of your cause, which will hopefully direct some more readers to your petition. Good luck! –ed.
The unlikely merger between the famous American truck company Mack and Jaguar cars has been kept a secret up until now – but the mascot says it all! This picture was taken at the October fun fair in Ostend, Belgium – and I thought it might give your readers a chuckle. Greetings from the Continent. Jacques Gâté, Ostend, Belgium
The writer of this issue’s Star Letter will win this superb 1:50 scale model Scania tractor unit with tri-axle walking floor trailer in the livery of Scottish operator A Campbell, worth £84.99!
NIGHT SHIFT BLUES Radio 2 DJ Alex Lester (aka The Dark Lord) has been faithfully presenting the Best Time of the Day slot (2-5 am) since 1990, proving endless hours of fun, entertainment and banter to keep the nightshift people going. His brand of humour, and his weird and sometimes downright silly observations have kept the nightshift workers entertained and motivated. However, it has been recently announced that his live show (2-5 am) will be replaced with repeats from the station’s day programmes, and he was to be moved to the Friday-Sunday early morning slot (midnight - 3 am). This is totally unfair to the nightshift workers, as we will lose a chance to listen and participate in a live show. Instead we will be subjected to the ‘repeats’ from the day. If we were fans of the repeats, we could have easily accessed it through the iPlayer. The Dark Lord has been an anchor for the nation – and for listeners – around the world. Please don’t take away the only bit of life and entertainment nightshift workers have during the work week. We need our Dark Lord to guide us out of the gloom of night shift. The book’s 192 pages are split into five main sections. The first is focused on HTA activity, ranging from forewords by chairman John Rodell and secretary John Dyne, to a timeline covering the HTA’s history from initial inception in 1983 to the present day, to sections on linked companies and manufacturers of heavy equipment. Section two looks at road transport law, and offers readers information on a range of topics relevant to the movement of oversize loads. Topics include Driver CPC, driver’s hours rules, tacho legislation, load security, O-licence rules, overloading, wheel security, driver daily checks, ADR & dangerous goods and, of course, a

BBC ‘KILLED’ THE RADIO STAR? Can you help us? The BBC is planning to axe the great Alex Lester on Radio 2. They are taking away his popular Monday to Friday slot, and moving him to a three-day weekend. They won’t axe less popular presenters because of political correctness. Night workers across the country don’t want to listen to repeats of old programmes they’ve probably heard before; they want live interaction with a great, humorous DJ. wealth of details covering the transport of abnormal loads. The third chapter presents a focused look at specialised trailer manufacturers, including Goldhofer, King Trailers, Nooteboom, DOLL and Faymonville, among others; while section four turns the spotlight on vehicle manufacturers DAF, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Scania and Volvo. Finally, section five takes a short look at some general and specialised operations, including a look at Collett’s movement of an oversize cyclone at Ferrybridge Power Station, and GCS Johnson’s tricky tunnel boring machine move through the congested streets of London. Needless to say, each story is supported by some stunning photography. Though a paperback publication, the book is printed on heavy, glossy paper which gives a premium feel and makes the most of the high-quality imagery. Running at 192 pages, there’s a lot here to keep readers occupied.

FOREIGN POLICY I am a young truck fan and a loyal Truckstop News reader. The work that you do every month is fantastic, but it would be great if you could showcase the transport industry in other EU countries too. I want to say a few words about transport in the EU and especially in my country, Greece. The transport industry is going from bad to worse, with many companies moving to other countries
(Bulgaria, Poland, Lithuania), and the drivers working for starvation salaries that barely cover their costs. Especially in Greece, apart from some loyal Greek hauliers, all the others have moved to Bulgaria, where they employ drivers with €350 per month! My point is, if we want to have a European Union, we must have the same minimum salary and tax laws in every country. Thousands of companies have ‘abandoned’ their countries, thousands of Eastern European drivers live in extreme poverty, and the people in Brussels haven’t taken a single measure to deal with this phenomenon. Thank you for your time. Alexander Avramidis Greece

This astonishingly good take on a real-life tale of New York stockbroker Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) who’s career takes him from penny stocks to the big leagues – and indulging in all the corruption and excesses you can imagine along the way. It’s a fascinating tale that is also incredibly funny, and it’s well worth a look if you’re a fan of Scorsese’s or DiCaprio’s previous collaborations.

Driver jailed for ciggy smuggling
A
self-employed truck driver from the West Midlands who tried to smuggle over eight million cigarettes into the UK by claiming he was delivering textiles has been jailed for three years after attempting to evade £1,600,000 in duty. David Brian George, 59, from Prouds Lane, Bilston, West Midlands, was stopped at the Humber port of Killingholme in April 2011 as he arrived on the early morning ferry from Rotterdam. Instead of a load of textiles for delivery to the Midlands, officers discovered 33 pallets containing 8,788,600 mixed-brand cigarettes. George, who trades as Lyndai International Transport, was arrested and interviewed by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) investigators. “George used his knowledge of the haulage

ritish chilled and ambient supply chain logistics specialist Fowler Welch has pitched its first Mercedes-Benz tractor units for many years into a Euro 6 shootout with its established vehicle suppliers. The company runs a mixed fleet of 340 trucks, the vast majority of them 44-tonne tractors. Latest additions to the line-up are four New Actros 2545 BigSpace units, which arrived via Surrey and Sussex Dealer Rossetts Commercials. Fowler Welch has headquarters in Spalding, Lincolnshire, but the Mercedes-Benz trucks are operating from its base at Hilsea, Portsmouth, from where the company delivers some 32,000 loads per year to wholesale and retail customers. “We’d heard good reports about the New Actros and tried a couple of demonstrators at Euro 5, which went well,” said Paul Allera, head of fleet at Fowler Welch. “Rossetts also impressed me with its determination to do business, so despite the fact it’s been many years since we last dealt with Mercedes-Benz, we decided to include New Actros in our latest evaluation programme.”

Fowler Welch is also assessing Euro 6 products from four other ‘premium brand’ manufacturers against a range of criteria. Foremost among these is fuel efficiency, but aftersales support and uptime are also being monitored closely – as is driver feedback – while weight is being given to the vehicle’s image on the road too. “These are still early days, but the New Actros are working well and clearly tick all the boxes,” Allera said. “Rossetts’ dealer principal Perry Reeves is very attentive and from the top down the customer focus in that dealership is brilliant – I can buy a truck from anywhere, but I’ve already seen enough to know they offer that bit more, and can be relied on to go the extra mile to deliver the best possible service.” The New Actros are powered by 449 bhp straight-six engines driving through Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmissions. They are additionally equipped with Daimler FleetBoard telematics and Predictive Powertrain Control systems (PPC), which employs 3D GPS mapping to read 3 km of topography ahead, then responds by controlling speed, braking and the transmission to maximise fuel efficiency.

The Freight Journey Planner, operated by PIE Mapping and delivered via the UK Haulier website, provides freight operators and drivers a way to plan routes tailored to their vehicle size automatically avoiding commercial vehicle road restrictions. During sentencing, HHJ Tremberg described the defendant as a “foot-soldier in a sophisticated, high-value smuggling operation”, who was “significant, substantial and indispensible”.

Held at the Oulton Park race circuit in Cheshire, the event gave invited guests their first chance to put the vehicle through its paces on UK roads. New Actros is the ultimate premium truck for longdistance transport. From the outset, designers and ADVERTORIAL engineers were determined to provide the best possible comfort, driving dynamics, safety, productivity and operating economy, as well as a sweeping range of cab sizes, engine ratings and options, allowing customers to tailor vehicles perfectly for any application. The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The 81 guests took turns to head out on a 17-mile test drive, carefully chosen to simulate a variety of typical driving conditions. Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. For a second and/or subsequent offence to multiply accordingly, for example, second offence in a commercial vehicle 2 x 21 days.

I recently received the following question that raises issues which are likely to be of interest to many drivers and operators. The question was: “I am the driver of a 7.5-tonne curtainsider and I deliver insulation around the M25 corridor. I carry Celetex boards or polystyrene sheets and insulation rolls etc. Recently I have heard you have to strap everything down inside the truck now, even if it is only a few sheets of poly. Is this true? “The problem is that sometimes I carry loads that go from the bottom of the lorry to the top, and there is no way you could get a strap over the gear. “Now, some drivers say you don’t have to strap and some say you do. I have a new lorry and it doesn’t have any straps down the middle, like some do. However, I do carry separate straps in a bag in the lorry in case I need them. “Surely if you do have to strap your gear down, it’s going to be more dangerous climbing to the top of your load to get a strap over it (Health & Safety)? “So if you could help me on answering this
One of the offences some drivers have committed is using a mobile phone while driving. The legislation defines this offence as follows: No person is to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using a handheld mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.
following: sending or receiving oral or written messages; sending or receiving facsimile documents; sending or receiving still or moving images; and providing access to the internet. If you’re caught using a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving, you can expect to get an automatic fixed penalty notice. This means you’ll get three penalty points on your driving licence and have to pay a fine of £60. However, your case may go to court. If it does, you may also face disqualification from driving on top of a maximum fine of £1000. If you were driving a PCV or heavy goods vehicle, you could face a maximum fine of £2500. Also if the matter were considered of a serious nature you could face prosecution for other road transport related offences, which carry more serious sentences.

Sheffield signs up for electric vans
A
string of businesses across South Yorkshire have announced they are switching from petrol and diesel power to electric vehicles in collaboration with a new ‘green’ plan set in motion by Sheffield City Council. Venson Automotive Solutions has been selected to provide the vans and cars for South Yorkshire’s Electric Vehicle project, which is designed to encourage businesses and their staff to lease electric vehicles for shorter work journeys. The scheme is the first of its kind and aims to reduce harmful emissions on the region’s roads and help businesses make savings on fuel costs through an initiative that Sheffield officials said could be adopted by other councils across the UK. The project is led by Sheffield City Council on behalf of the government-backed Local Sustainable Transport Fund partnership, Inmotion!, together with npower. Four local councils are taking part – Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. Plug-in vehicles available for businesses to use under the plan are Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe, Renault Twizy and Renault Kangoo van – which can travel up to 80 miles. Eligible businesses can gain access to a grant of up to £10,500 for a plug-in van and £7500 for a plug-in car for a period of up to 48 months, plus an additional grant of £500 towards the cost of installing a workplace charging point. With these grants taken into account, running a Nissan Leaf is claimed to save up to 50 per cent on total running costs compared with that of a small hatchback with even the lowest emissions.

Tockwith takes off with automated training
H Sheffield Council reckons the Electric Vehicle scheme will save money for local businesses Sheffield councillor Jack Scott said: “South Yorkshire’s Electric Vehicle scheme is a fantastic way for local businesses to consider and change their employee’s travel behaviour through the option of leasing an electric vehicle for shorter work journeys. “Companies making the switch to plug-in vehicles will see benefits from lower running costs such as no road tax, and a reduction in maintenance costs, as well doing their bit to reduce exhaust emissions and helping to create healthier and cleaner roads in our region.” “This is an exciting and ground-breaking initiative that could serve to lay the path for local businesses throughout the UK to reduce CO2 levels in their region,” added Alan McCleave, business development director of Venson Automotive Solutions.

essay, York-based LGV Training company Tockwith Training has taken delivery of two Euro 6-compliant new-series Volvo FE 4x2 rigids, which are among the first new FEs in the UK to be specified with I-Shift automated gearbox. On April 10, 2014, the law was changed to enable truck drivers to acquire their Category C licence driving a truck fitted with an automatic gearbox – and the change to the legislation coincided with the availability for the first time of Volvo’s I-Shift in the FE series of trucks. “The availability of the I-Shift gearbox in the new-series FE was the main reason we bought these two trucks,” said Tockwith Training’s Mike Moore. “For one thing, the I-Shift has the auto Hill-Hold feature, which other manufacturers don’t offer. As it is so smooth, it’s also a good gearbox for reversing. “The FE has a good brake pedal and everything works well together,” Moore continued. “It’s very quiet and there is no wind noise. Because of the I-Shift and the ease with which drivers get used to it - compared to a nine-speed manual ’box - they need two days’ less training from our qualified, DSA accredited instructors. This translates into less cost for the person being trained.” Moore also said he was impressed with the operating costs for Volvo trucks in general – and the new FE series in particular: “We’ve been helping drivers acquire their LGV/HGV licences for 41 years. We train 500
drivers a year and currently have a 90 per cent pass rate. We acquired our first Volvo in 1980 and our first new Volvo in 1986, and we have always found Volvo trucks have fewer faults and incur lower costs overall.” The firm’s trucks do about 50,000 km a year each. The rigids are loaded to five tonnes, and Moore said the new FEs are returning about 12.9 mpg at the moment. “That is an improvement over the old model FE they replaced, and will help in the overall running costs,” he said. “We will also save on maintenance because the clutch in the I-Shift should last twice as long as that with a manual gearbox – an important factor, as learners could be breaking clutches more frequently now the trucks are loaded.” Both the trucks, which were supplied by Crossroads at Boroughbridge, are powered by Volvo’s new Euro 6 D8K engine rated at 250 bhp.
Tockwith Training took its new FEs with I-Shift transmissions as candidates can now complete their Cat C tests with an auto gearbox

An app for happy travels
S
martphone app MotorwayBuddy has received a major update which the developer said builds a wealth of new features into the software that will help drivers on the road find places to park and rest up. The app was originally developed through the frustrations of one driver, who felt there was a need for a dedicated truck stop locating tool. “Driving up and down to Inverness twice a week, I realised there was no real way of finding safe and secure places to park,” said Chris Holloway, managing director of MotorwayBuddy. “At the time, there were various websites that vaguely showed where truck stops were, and as I was to find out, they were very out of date. “However, the main problem was you couldn’t use them while driving - you needed a computer and an internet signal. Not easy to come by while driving up and down the A9!” The first version of the app was nothing more than a place finder, gathered through
website information, word of mouth and stopping in to see the facilities at truck stops across the country. “The original app was a great success and through social media and word of mouth, it started to generate interest throughout the haulage community,” Holloway said. “So much so that we decided to start adding features to the app to help with issues I had experienced throughout my driving career.” As well as the current features of locating the nearest truck stop, the ability for the truck stops to keep their page up-to-date and the comment and rating function for the drivers, the next release of the MotorwayBuddy app adds value with a digital driver checklist. Once completed, this can be sent to the office immediately, ensuring driver and operator can agree the vehicle is safe to be on the road before the day’s duties begin. Another planned future feature is a unique reporting tool records accidents, crime or load issues. It will allow drivers to upload pictures,
stamp the location and time of the incident and leave a brief description – all reported immediately to the haulage companies. MotorwayBuddy can be downloaded for free via Google Play and the iTunes Store.
Version 2 of the MotorwayBuddy app offers a variety of useful new features
Should traffic lights stay red for longer?
M
ore than half the country’s fleet operators believe traffic lights should stay red for longer, according to a poll by comparison website TrackCompare. co.uk. The survey followed a government announcement that it is reviewing crossing times across the country after concerns that pensioners and others find it difficult to cross roads before the lights change. Asked the question ‘Do you believe traffic lights should stay red for longer?’, a total of 52 per cent of respondents said yes. “With this poll there was an almost fifty-fifty split, which reflects the fact fleet operators are both drivers and pedestrians and can see things from both sides,” said TrackCompare director, Kjell Anderton.
“One told us: ‘I think no, because it will cause more congestion; but I also think yes, because sometimes I have to nearly run across the road – and I’m not a pensioner!’” Typical of comments left in support of extra red-light time was: ‘Yes, I do think they should (stay on longer); even if you’re not elderly, there’s never enough time to cross.’ Comments against ranged from: ‘No, we should have a countdown system like they do in America, so that people can see how long they’ve actually got left to cross the road’; to: ‘No way - they already stay on too long and hold me up!’ The majority of truck operators agreed longer spells on red would be safer for all road users

discovered huge numbers of people who routinely drive while using the phone, have no tax or insurance, speed, or have a vehicle that’s unfit for the road. According to Flexed.co.uk, it’s an attitude that shows scant regard for the law of the road and could lead to deaths and lifechanging injuries. Legal drivers pay the price of this national crime wave through increased insurance premiums, Flexed claimed. “To say we were shocked is an understatement,” flexed.co.uk spokesman Mark Hall said. “We expected people to admit some minor wrong-doing, but what we heard simply beggars belief.” Over 1100 drivers were asked if they had broken motoring laws within the past 12 months, and a staggering 79 per cent responded ‘yes’, while 16 per cent said ‘no’ and five per cent declined to answer. Of those who said they had broken the law, the following “crimes” were admitted (some owned up to more than one offence): ■ Using a mobile phone (37 per cent) ■ Speeding (32 per cent) ■ Illegal parking (25 per cent) ■ No seat belt (19 per cent) ■ Drove through a red light (17 per cent)
■ Drove while drunk (11 per cent) ■ Worn tyres (nine per cent ■ Expired tax disc (seven per cent) ■ No MoT (six per cent) ■ No Insurance (six per cent) ■ Left the scene of an accident (one per cent) ■ Other (eight per cent) While most of these can be classed as minor infringements, Flexed said it’s the small yet significant number of unroadworthy cars and incapable drivers that are the most worrying. “More than one tenth admitted drinkdriving in the last year, and that’s a frightening statistic,” Hall said. Unfortunately, stretched police forces with tightened budgets mean the chance of being caught is lower, and some drivers think there’s a risk worth taking, said Flexed – before calling for a high-profile police crackdown on offenders. “Unfortunately, when you’re on a busy road, any of the drivers around you could be uninsured or driving a dangerous car,” Hall said. “That’s a sobering thought, and something needs to be done. “Insurance premiums are high enough without armies of illegal drivers driving them higher.”

A remedy for driver turnover? By Pól Sweeney, managing director Europe & CTO, Airclic
A
ccording to the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals’ (CSCMP), the shortage of qualified drivers – now at about 30,000 – could swell to nearly four times that by 2016. Currently, only about 17 per cent of the driver population is under 35. But why is only a small population of younger drivers considering a career in the trucking industry? The environment drivers are in is not seen as desirable; long hours on the road, irate customers and a lot of time spent alone. Mobile technology is shaping the future and young people are looking for a career within a company which is forever innovating. Therefore, one way to entice younger drivers to join – and stay in – the trucking industry is to arm them with the same mobile app experience that they have in their personal lives. Younger drivers want to be able to use their mobile apps to access the information and data that they need to be armed with as they go about their day; they don’t expect to read information from and maintain a paper manifest—the ‘Consumerisation of Technology’ is catching up with trucking. However, supplying this technology should ultimately be seen as a critical business investment rather than one just for the individual; the untapped benefits of technology are significant. Equipping the driver with this technology will help ensure higher levels of customer service as drivers can assume responsibility for proactively communicating with customers when ETA windows are not going to be met. This in turn means that they will be better armed and capable of dealing with the customer and any customer service queries they might have on arrival. Furthermore, it can enable the business to increase efficiency by following workflows specific to customers’ customers’. Given the high volume of driver turnover, using technology can ensure that proper instructions are documented and followed, irrespective of the driver. For example, logistics companies have developed ‘neighbourhood couriers’; lifestyle delivery drivers who use their spare time to deliver parcels to the local community. The use of technology in this instance could provide additional flexibility to the individual who has other duties and responsibilities - whether these are work or family commitments - and will enable them to do their job more efficiently. Naturally, by providing better tools you are going to have a driver who is better informed and up to date, and in doing so better serve the business and its customers. Using the right technology in trucking takes ‘tribal knowledge’ out of the delivery equation. The investment is a virtuous circle that increases efficiency and transparency throughout the last mile of delivery – and has a positive impact on customer service and brand image.

Volvo Trucks has lifted the lid on its all-new FH series of heavy trucks, designed with the driver in mind and a focus on fuel economy.
→ M1 South
Details were scarce when we went to press ahead of the official launch on September 5, but the Swedish manufacturer told Truckstop News the new FHs will be available in both Euro 5 and 6 form, and pack a vast amount of upgrades and improvements. Leading the charge for fuel efficiency is Volvoʼs new I-See function (Truckstop News, issue 301). The system, which works alongside the I-Shift automated transmission, is claimed to cut consumption by five per cent by storing information about the route the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure progress is as economical as possible,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Truck Corporation. An additional five per cent saving in fuel use is possible with Volvo Trucksʼ new Fuel Package. This package encompasses training and monthly assistance – Fuel Advice – and its aim is to cut fuel costs by changing driving styles and increasing knowledge of how to drive for maximum fuel-efficiency. Volvoʼs new I-Torque Euro 6 driveline – production of which for the European market will get under way in autumn 2013 – should make for additional fuel savings. “ITorque reduces fuel consumption by up to With its new Volvo FH series, Volvo is ʻpushing four the envelopeʼ in re-defining what a premium per cent. Together with I-See and other minor truck can offer. improvements, the result is fuel consumption can drop by up to 10 per cent. For the average truck, this can equate to a saving of up to 4100 litres of fuel a year,” Nilsson continued. On-road manners have received much attention, and Volvo is claiming the new trucks offer exceptional handling thatʼs much like a car. “To put things into perspective, we can even offer independent front suspension, although initially only on left-hand drive vehicles. This world-first takes handling to unsurpassed levels in the truck world,” Nilsson said.

We Urgently require Professional Class 1 (C+E) Drivers
Also of benefit to drivers are improved seats and driving position, optimised to provide a better view of the road. This is aided by an increase in the cabʼs usable window area and an innovative slimmer rear-view mirror design. Stalks and controls are arranged in priority so the most important ones are now closest to the driver, and the steering wheel now has a neck tilt function – another world-first in the truck world. Safety is high on the agenda, An all-new cab structure features more upright A-pillars, which give the cab an additional 1 m3 of interior space. This means an extra 300 litres (10.5 cu ft) of storage capacity, as well as greater comfort on board.“The cab is optimised both for work and leisure time,” Nilsson said. “A better bed, integrated parking cooler, new lighting and low noise levels among other features, all increase the chance of pleasant relaxation and a good nightʼs sleep, which in turn means drivers are less tired and more alert.” Production of the Volvo FH will start in spring 2013 for the European market.

McCulla’s new trailer slashes fuel bills
T
emperature-controlled distribution specialist McCulla has become the first customer in Ireland to commission a Gray & Adams semi-trailer fitted with the manufacturer’s latest-generation panel cappings. Specified for increased fuel efficiency, the new 13.6 m trailer is undergoing a threemonth trial and is already producing mpg savings of up to five per cent, according to the company. Gray & Adams unveiled its new cappings at the CV Show in Birmingham. They are more aerodynamically profiled than its previous, standard one-piece cappings – a feature the manufacturer said helps to reduce diesel consumption as well as giving the trailer or rigid vehicle a more modern, streamlined appearance. Impact-resistant and bonded to prevent moisture ingress, the cappings are also designed to accommodate the high-visibility tape that is now a statutory requirement. McCulla (Ireland) operates from bases in Lisburn and Dublin, and is a long-standing
G
McCulla has taken Ireland’s first semitrailer with G&A’s new panel cappings customer of the UK’s leading manufacturer of temperature-controlled semi-trailers and bodywork. It purchased Ireland’s very first Gray & Adams trailer 35 years ago, and today the same supplier accounts for approximately 80 per cent of its 125 semi-trailers – as well having built the bodies for a high proportion of its rigid vehicles. The latest addition to that fleet is equipped with ThermoKing’s SLX-e Spectrum multitemperature refrigeration unit and advanced TouchPrint temperature recording system. Pulled by one of McCulla’s Mercedes-Benz New Actros tractor units, the new trailer is on long-distance, predominantly motorway work, which takes it to the UK mainland and down to Paris. It has a moving internal bulkhead and two levels of recessed load lock, and is also fitted with Gray & Adams’ sliding suzie rail. “We do everything possible to maximise fuel efficiency and thereby minimise the impact of our operations on the environment,”
Foley & Miles makes it MAN
rays, West Thurrock-based Foley & Miles has taken delivery of six new MAN 26.440 BLS 6x2 tractor units to support its existing fleet of vehicles working on deliveries to Crossrail sites – London’s new multi-billion-pound railway infrastructure project currently under construction. Originally a ‘brick and block’ haulage specialist working in partnership with H&H Celcon, Foley & Miles has expanded its portfolio in recent years to include transportation for rail infrastructure companies, providing storage and distribution solutions for a leading brick importer and natural stone importers requiring bespoke off loading requirements. These latest MAN deliveries take the Munich manufacturer’s presence in the fleet to 16, in a total fleet of 48 trucks, and the trucks were acquired through MAN Financial Services on a five-year funding package. “We have a good history of operating
MAN trucks,” said Gary Buckell, fleet manager. “They have always worked hard for us and have a striking on-road presence. This latest fleet replaces a competitor marque for MAN and the trucks are already showing good fuel returns – something I hope will improve still further after our drivers have attended MAN driver training courses.” All the new MAN vehicles are fitted with an array of safety equipment to meet the latest Transport for London and Crossrail supplier compliance. These include sidefacing safety cameras, side-scan detection devices, reversing cameras and alarms. Compliance notwithstanding, Foley & Miles is putting one of its super-safe MAN’s to good educational use. “We’re very conscious of our responsibility to road safety,” said Buckell, “and we have allocated one of the new MANs to regular school visits as part of a wider cycle safety initiative with Thurrock Council.”
said McCulla (Ireland) operations director, Brian Beattie. “First impressions of the new trailer are excellent – in a back-to-back comparison with conventional trailers on the same work it appears to be cutting diesel
consumption by as much as five per cent. “It also looks slicker, more modern and eye-catching, which can only be a good thing given that our vehicles also serve as mobile billboards for the business.”
Iveco takes to eco rubber
I
talian truck manufacturer Iveco has said it has standardised on 315/70R22.5 tyres for new Euro 6 tractor units entering service in the UK after seeing the fuel-saving potential of 70-series rubber compared with the 295/80R22.5 fitments previously favoured in the UK. Trials in conjunction with Michelin and a major Iveco national fleet customer recorded a 3.87 per cent improvement in fuel economy between two identical Stralis AT440S46TX/P vehicles shod with the two different sizes of tyres. The trial compared Michelin’s current generation of fuel-saving tyres over the same 299 km route for two days, with both vehicles operating at 44 tonnes in conjunction with tri-axle curtainside trailers. “Our decision to standardise on 70-series tyres at Euro 6 was largely due to this test result, combined with similar testing we undertook at Millbrook,” said Martin Flach, product director of Iveco UK. “Our Euro 6 Stralis range has been finetuned to maximise efficiency and reduce total cost of ownership for operators, right down to the tyres we fit in the factory.” Guy Heywood, commercial director of Michelin’s truck division in the UK, added: “Even operators who have long favoured 295/80R22.5 tyres are now considering a change in their tyre buying habits to reduce running costs. “Iveco’s decision to standardise on 315/70R22.5 tyres simply reflects its commitment to offering the most fuel-efficient vehicles to customers.”
Michelin’s fuel-saving Energy tyres are designed for fleets operating primarily on motorways and major trunk roads, where vehicles cover in excess of 110,000 km a year at average speeds greater than 70 kmh, and with limited stops per day. The tyre manufacturer’s 315/70R22.5 X Line Energy boots combine Michelin’s lowest rolling resistance truck tyres to date with what the firm claims is an exceptionally long tyre life. Under EU tyre labelling, the 315/70 X Line Energy Z (multi-position) is rated B for rolling resistance and wet grip, while the 315/70 X Line Energy D (drive) is rated B for rolling resistance and ‘C’ for wet grip.
Iveco said its switch to Michelin’s latest 70-series tyres for Euro 6 was a result of recent fuel trials Foley & Miles said its new 6x2s replace alternative marques

CAMERA CATCHES HGV DRIVER’S NEAR-MISS
Get trucked in... Products specifically designed for life on the road
A
car was just seconds from disaster when it dangerously cut in front of a truck on the A4146, near Milton Keynes Village in Buckinghamshire. The incident was recorded on a 3G camera from Intelligent Telematics, which managed to capture the exact moment when the driver of the Ford Focus recklessly attempted to make an illegal left turn from the outside lane of the road down the wrong way of a slip lane, missing the truck by a matter of centimetres. A major collision was averted by the quick thinking of the HGV driver, who works for WS Transportation. The high-definition video footage shows the HGV driving safely and well within the speed limit approaching the junction as the car swerves into its path to make the illegal turn, forcing the HGV to rapidly reduce its speed to avoid an impact. “Dangerous driving such as this is a major risk not only to the vehicle responsible, but also to other road users,” said David Cox, managing director of WS Transportation. “Drivers need to take greater responsibility on the road, especially around heavy goods vehicles.

DAF UNVEILS EURO 6 HEAVIES
utch truck manufacturer DAF has announced it is expanding its Euro 6 offering with a range of four-axle CF and XF rigids and tractors for special and heavy-duty transport applications. The new four-axle vehicles will complement DAF’s range of two- and three-axle CF and XF tractors and rigids with single or double drive, and will be offered in a choice of configurations including conventional 8x4, and also 8x2 for maximum manoeuvrability. The new CF range now includes the FAX configuration with four axles: with two steered front axles (eight or nine tonnes) and a rear bogie consisting of an 11.5-tonne driven axle and a 7.5-tonne steered trailing rear axle. The FAX CF has a GVW of 32 tonnes and can be specified for drawbar operation up to 44 tonnes. It offers extra manoeuvrability for distributing construction materials, plant or machinery movement, and enables a large crane to be mounted behind the cab.
17
For the first time in the UK, DAF is also offering a four-axle FAQ featuring the three rearmost axles mounted at the rear to form a tridem – popular for special applications because of its ability to cope with loads biased towards the rear of the vehicle while providing good manoeuvrability. The CF FAQ comes with single front axle rated at either eight or nine tonnes. The tridem consists of a steered leading rear axle, a driven rear axle and a steered trailing axle with a combined capacity in the UK of 24 tonnes. The FAQ has a maximum GVW of 32 tonnes. For heavy-duty and special transport, DAF is offering an 8x4 XF tractor where the tridem consists of a double-drive tandem and a steered leading rear axle. Dubbed the FTM, the truck offers increased traction and a high load capacity. Equipped with an eight or

DAFS MARK OUT A WINNER
U
K road marking contractor WJ Roadmarkings has placed an order for 10 DAF trucks for its specialist fleet used to apply or remove permanent and temporary road markings, surfaces and road studs across the country. Four new bright-yellow DAF LF220 Euro 6 12-tonne vehicles with bespoke bodies have already been delivered, and are working in London on various local authority contracts. The other trucks ordered are larger 16and 18-tonne models, which will carry heavier equipment for longer distance line markings and fitting cats eyes. The LF’s light weight enables enough payload to carry specialist equipment to keep road marking materials warm at 190 degrees. As the new vehicles are based in London, the low-emission Euro 6 trucks can operate within in the city’s LEZ. In addition, to meet Transport for London standards and achieve its FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) accreditation, all new WJ Roadmarkings vehicles are now fitted with side-view cameras, nearside scanners, rear warning signs and an audible (spoken) warning system that’s activated when the driver indicates left to warn cyclists and other vulnerable road users.
WJ Roadmarkings has ordered 10 new DAFs for its fleet In addition, WJ Roadmarkings said it is ensuring all its drivers undertake the Approved Driver Training for Safe Urban Driving. “We chose the new DAF LF Euro 6 because it is light and the right size, which makes it more suitable for its role in and around London,” said Mark Fawcett, general manager, WJ Roadmarkings. The new trucks were supplied by the DAF dealer F&G Commercials in Huddersfield and will be serviced at the closest DAF dealer to the WJ Roadmarkings base in Croydon, HTC Croydon in Surrey.
CONTI UPDATES RUBBER FOR EURO 6
T
yre manufacturer Continental has launched a new Hybrid tyre family designed for combined use on both regional roads and motorways. The first version of the Hybrid range in 22.5 inch format to be launched is the Conti Hybrid HS3, a steer axle tread for universal use. According to the manufacturer, when compared with its predecessors, the thick new tread design with high wear volume gives a 17 per cent longer service life. The larger plus volume pattern used for the tread of the new tyre also reduces rolling resistance caused by flexing. Conti said pocket sipes inserted diagonally into the base of the tread optimise wet-road performance throughout the tyre’s service life, even on changing road surfaces. Closed shoulders make the Hybrid HS3
steer axle tyre in 22.5 inch format maneuverable, while reducing movement within the tread design. The use of a new rubber compound in the sidewall also helps reduce the build up of temperature in the tyre, which the manufacturer said results in lower fuel consumption. The Hybrid tyres are manufactured with solid reinforced premium casing, increased tread material, four-layer triangular belts and a robust bead construction to offer a long and reliable service life. In addition, the load-carrying capacity of the new universal tyre has been adapted for the heavier weight of Euro 6 trucks. The integrated visual alignment indicator (VAI) makes wheel alignment errors easy to spot from the tread pattern. Conti said its Hybrid HS3 steering axle tyres will be available in eight different dimensions for heavy-duty applications in 22.5 inch format by the end of the year.
CABLE LAUNCHES SMART TRANSPORT CENTRE
B
usiness Secretary Vince Cable has opened a new innovation centre for smart transport technology that the government reckons will “transform” the movement of people and goods around the world and generate up to £90 billion per year for the UK by 2025. Based in Milton Keynes, the Transport Systems Catapult’s ‘Imovation Centre’ will be working to make journeys more seamless, smart and efficient - from driverless vehicles and improved airport data systems to integrated logistics, sentiment mapping and smart traffic lights. Speaking at a special media preview of the Centre in Milton Keynes, Cable said: “Britain has a long history of transport innovation; from the shipbuilders who paved the way for globalisation, to the railways that underpinned the industrial revolution. “This new innovation centre will ensure the UK is well placed to profit from the increased

demand for high-tech transport solutions creating jobs, supporting businesses, and driving economic growth.” Operated by the Transport Systems Catapult, the Imovation Centre (combining Intelligent Mobility and innovation) is pitched as a world-class collaboration space for innovators, entrepreneurs, research organisations and businesses using the latest technological developments to improve the transportation of people and goods. It will also offer modelling and testing facilities, allowing new products to be properly trialled and demonstrated. The government said it estimated the global market in Intelligent Mobility will be worth around £900bn a year by 2025, and the Imovation Centre will aim to help the UK secure at least a 10 per cent share of the market. The Transport Systems Catapult will directly contribute £712 million in economic value to the UK during its first five years (2013-2018), the government said.
Truframe said MAN’s whole-life costs were favourable
M
elton Mowbray-based uPVC window and patio-door maker Truframe has put to the road its first new Euro 6 truck – an MAN TGM 18.250BL 4x2 18-tonner with demount body. The new truck joins three same-spec Euro 5 MAN models delivered over the previous 24 months. “The whole-life-cost figures certainly stacked up well against the other Euro 6 trucks on the market,” said Truframe transport & despatch manager, Paul North, who added the new truck was also performing well in terms of fuel economy. “Since acquiring the new MAN Euro 6, we’re already seeing 13 mpg – and that’s impressive for our operation. “We’re using less AdBlue, the drivers love
the MAN product anyway, and the aftersales support we receive from MAN Truck & Bus Nuneaton is second to none,” he added. Truframe said the company has said it will be acquiring more MANs after the lease terms expire on its other truck marques. In 2011, Truframe took the decision to revamp its transport operation and to switch to demount bodies – a move which demanded close involvement from its truck supplier. “Along with our demount body manufacturer, Transport Enterprises, MAN played a major role in developing a demountable solution for us,” said North. “MAN engineers were happy to sit down with us to discuss the possibilities. The result? A no-compromise chassis that precisely fits our requirements.”
SfL TO RATE DCPC COURSE CONTENT
S
kills for Logistics (SfL) has announced it is looking to create an endorsement for Driver CPC training providers which are deemed to be offering an ‘excellent’ standard of training to drivers that goes above and beyond standard course quality. SfL said it is calling on training providers and employers to get in touch to help develop the system, which it said will ‘sharpen-up’ Driver CPC and make it more relevant to employers. While JAUPT has the role of ensuring Driver CPC regulations are met, SfL said being legal doesn’t necessarily mean a training provider is ‘excellent’. To address this, SfL said it is stepping into the vacant quality custodian role and is developing the endorsement standard. SfL said the set of criteria for the assessment, which is currently being planned, will be based on high-quality training and business benefit. A live database will be created of all endorsed training providers, and of those who have had their endorsement removed by falling below the standard. SfL also said a crucial part of the process will be a programme of unannounced audits and ‘secret trainees’ to ensure the standard is maintained during the 3-5 year period between assessments. Training providers can use the endorsement ‘kite mark’ in their marketing, which will be a market sign informing employers where to find good Driver CPC courses and will give the opportunity to benchmark training providers. Looking ahead, SfL said the scheme could

Skills for Logistics is looking to promote ‘excellent’ DCPC courses be deployed on an EU-wide basis enhanced, for example, with language skills to make it relevant for UK drivers – which it suggested would further increase the pool of drivers with ‘excellent’ quality DCPC for employers. “This will not be a mandatory scheme, but we know there are many training providers who would like to compete on quality – and that there are employers and individuals who want visibility of the standard of DCPC they are receiving or employing,” said Skills for Logistics CEO, Dr Ross Moloney. “We expect a significant number of the 1400 approved DCPC training centres to engage with the process, to see how they measure up against others, and to gain the opportunity to examine how to improve their service, in addition to marketing their quality. “While JAUPT recognises you as being legal, Skills for Logistics will endorse you as being excellent.”
