Iveco on quality street

I

veco’s managing director (UK & Ireland) Claudio Zanframundo spoke at a press and customer lunch held at the National Exhibition Centre during the second day of the Commercial Vehicle Show. He said road transport is a vital, allimportant industry, which plays a critical role in the health and vitality of UK plc, and never more so than now, when the economy is successfully climbing out of the deepest and most prolonged recession in living memory. “As CV manufacturers and suppliers, we serve the needs of the road transport industry. We play an indispensable role in supplying the products – and even more importantly, the support services – you, as operators, need if you are to play your part in restoring our UK and European economies to health and wellbeing once again.” He said that is why an event like the CV Show is so important, because it allows the road transport industry to showcase all that is new and innovative; all that is visionary and exciting. “It gives us a platform on which to highlight the value of our products and to demonstrate the importance we place on delivering,” he added, “and not just for our customers, but also for the environment and society at large. “Of course, Iveco is an international company. It was one of the first big truck industry consolidations – a fusion of panEuropean brands from Italy, France, Germany, Spain and the UK. Today – with the birth last September of CNH Industrial, now the biggest capital goods corporation in the world – it is a truly global brand. It is part of a group that incorporates 64 plants, 49 research and development (R&D) centres, the expertise of over 68,000 people worldwide, and with 12 brands across 190 countries, it has a network of over 6000 dealers. He said Iveco accounts for around a third

of all the group’s revenues, with more than 292,000 units produced in 2013 for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and through its China joint ventures. “This is just one example of what ‘being global’ means, because at the heart of our strategy are the two most important factors in delivering global success – product and quality. They are inseparable.” He invited operators to visit the Iveco stand to get up close and personal with the products and see examples of the excellence the Italian truck manufacturer had achieved and appreciate just how good they now are. “The plants where our Stralis, Eurocargo and Daily products are built have been completely renewed in equipment, assembly and logistics,” Zanframundo said. “New quality processes guarantee conformity to standards and attention to detail, while the adoption of new leading-edge technologies have eliminated the risk of issues right from the manufacturing process.” He said world class manufacturing standards have now been deployed across all Iveco’s plants. “We have also invested in our people and our organisation, and already the feedback from our customers tells us we are in line – or better than – our competitors, not least in driveline performance and fuel economy. “Quality is our first priority, in product, in the services we deliver behind those products, and in the support we offer you – our customers – in every aspect of your operations.” He said Iveco’s aim is to be a ‘service leader’ in every market in which the company operates and to be an innovator and help you run your businesses more efficiently, more economically and more profitably. “That is why our platform is focused on Total Costs of Ownership and Operation,” he explained.

Euro CV demand rises – UK truck sales falter

N

ew figures released ahead of the CV Show by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) reveal that March saw demand for new commercial vehicles in the EU increase for the seventh consecutive month. Total commercial vehicle registrations grew by 11.1 per cent, totaling 185,520 units. Growth was sustained across all segments – and out of the most significant markets, Spain recorded the highest upturn (+26.8 per cent). The UK and Italy also both posted doubledigit growth at 11 per cent and 16.3 per cent respectively. Demand in Germany and France also increased, at 9.8 per cent and 0.3 per cent respectively. ACEA said that in the first quarter of the year, the EU market expanded by 9.8 per cent, totaling 443,038 units. During the same period, Spain was up 39 per cent, Italy grew by 14.1 per cent, Germany by 10.5 per cent and the UK by 10.4 per cent. France was the only major market showing a decline, recorded as -0.6 per cent. In the heavy truck sector, the March results showed a 7.7 per cent increase in registrations for new commercial vehicles over 16 tonnes, totaling 19,266 units. Out of the most significant markets, Spain (+55.1

per cent) and Germany (+22.9 per cent) recorded the highest growth. However, France (-10.3 per cent), Italy (-11.1 per cent) and the UK (-20.4 per cent) saw their demand for heavy trucks decline. From January to March, the EU heavy truck market grew by 11.9 per cent, reaching 52,278 units. Increase was sustained in Spain (+48.1 per cent), Italy (+32.5 per cent), Germany (+25.0 per cent) and France (+8.0 per cent), while heavy truck registrations dropped by 31.4 per cent in the UK. For commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, the March results showed a 4.2 per cent increase in new truck registrations, totaling 25,262 units. Germany (+14.8 per cent) remained the largest market in the month of March in terms of volumes, registering 8585 trucks. However, truck registrations fell by 11.0 per cent in France, 13.0 per cent in Italy and 21.1 per cent in the UK. Over the first quarter, 66,477 new trucks over 3.5 tonnes were registered in the EU – 6.7 per cent more than in the same period last year. Spain (+44.0 per cent), Poland (+18.1 per cent), Germany (+15.5 per cent), Italy (+8.1 per cent) and France (+4.5 per cent) all posted growth, though demand for new trucks in the UK fell by -28.3 per cent.

Iveco has turned an important corner in terms of product quality and reliability “Euro 6 is a good example. Make no mistake, the challenge of meeting the demands of Euro 6 taxed everyone to the full, us and all our vehicle manufacturer colleagues! It required us to lower dramatically levels of NOx and particulates He said it was a huge ask. “But, as an industry, we’ve achieved everything that’s been required of us – and more! Of course, each manufacturer has chosen their our own route to meeting Euro 6, but at Iveco, we adopted an SCR-only solution – a Hi-eSCR solution, as we call it – because in our opinion, it’s the simplest, least complicated and least costly route to choose. It avoids much of the complex technology required for other solutions and makes a real difference in reducing your Total Costs of Ownership as a result.” He said fuel is the critical component and

claimed that, combined with Iveco innovations such as Ecoswitch and Ecofleet, its Hi-eSCR approach to Euro 6 can deliver as much as a 10 per cent fuel saving on most operations. “That is a fact. Because we are proud to say all the fuel saving steps we’ve made have been independently assessed, proven and verified by international standards and certification agency TÜV. “We are proud of the achievements we’ve made in lowering your costs, strengthening your cash flow and improving your productivity because we know the difference they will make and the impact they’ll have on your bottom-line profitability.” He concluded quality is what the Iveco of today is all about – product and services, 24/7, by the side of the road, in the workshop, looking after, maintaining and caring for customers’ vehicles ‘with the highest precision and quality’. “Quality is what we as a company are focused on,” he said.

Tachodisc talks up compliance

T

achodisc showcased its full range of mobile compliant solutions at the NEC show, including its latest Digital Signature Capture System and Driver Walk Around Check app. In addition, the company also demonstrated how its new TachoMax integrated compliance system manages tachograph analysis, verified remote downloading, driver behaviour and vehicle tracking. With millions of drivers and operators using smartphones and tablets in their everyday life, Tachodisc said its proposition is about taking driver aids and analysis software onto a new, enhanced level of mobile sophistication. “We are living in a mobile world, so it makes sense to create digital solutions that can help drivers understand and manage their legal requirements from their phone or tablet, and to integrate these mobile technologies into our professional analysis software services,” said Tachodisc’s technical director, Guy Reynolds. “Tachodisc’s touchscreen digital signature capture system is a case

example,” he continued. “This unique system allows operators to use mobile technology to help improve the electronic audit trail and traceability of infringement documentation, as well as verify that rules on drivers’ hours and tachographs are being observed by the driver and the company. “This documentation is then all securely stored within our analysis software.” Tachodisc’s legal and IT experts were also on hand at the show to provide advice and information on the company’s digital products and mobile technologies, as well as its range of fleet management services – including online driver training assessments via TachoTrain, driver debrief auditing and vehicle licence checks. With Driver CPC deadlines fast approaching, Tachodisc’s training team were also promoting how drivers can use these final hours of training positively, and gain up-to-date, meaningful information on subjects that can help them stay safe and compliant in their everyday work life – ie, drivers’ hours law, Working Time and digital tachograph rules.

MAN’s tech pledge

M

AN Truck & Bus UK came to the 2014 CV Show armed with a full range of Euro 6 models for operators as well as real operating facts of its Euro 6 vehicles already out on the roads with UK operators. Speaking ahead of the show, MAN Truck & Bus UK chief executive officer (CEO) Des Evans said: “There has been a long period of concern among operators about what the performance of Euro 6 trucks coming into service this year would mean to them. Scaremongering on prices and reports of increased fuel consumption saw strong sales growth in our late Euro 5 models, growth that is now being paralleled by interest in high-quality MAN TopUsed Euro 5 products. “The simple truth is – and this is based on real-time, full operational usage among some of the best known fleets in the UK – MAN Euro 6 tractors deliver significant fuel consumption improvements and equally significant reductions in AdBlue usage, not only against our own comparable Euro 5 models, but against other manufacturers’ Euro 6 models.” Evans gave the UK trade press a full briefing on the MAN Euro 6 product offering, explored impacts of the stringent Euro 6 on-board diagnostics systems on any product from any of the manufacturers, noting the threat of trucks being automatically switched to ‘limp-home’ mode if maintenance requirements for the new technology were not followed precisely was now a real possibility. He spoke of MAN’s Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – which he reckons is ‘potentially the best solution available’. “The MAN TGX tractor DPF component product will run up to the 500,000 km mark before any inspection or maintenance is deemed necessary,” he said, comparing this to levels as low as 250,000 km quoted by others. “Any maintenance or cleaning of the filter unit would be covered within the MAN Gold R&M package for operators running TGX tractors at 160,000 km a year,” he explained. Evans explained the full three-year package which adds to the benefits – its WarrantyXtra programme – which comes with MAN Euro 6 products as standard across every model. “But more important,” Evans said, “is the question of how the vehicles perform – their Total Cost of Operation (TCO).

Periodic Driver CPC Training from Mercedes-Benz real training, not box ticking. Des Evans says operational facts backup MAN’s case for savings with Euro 6 technology “This legislation change demanded major investment by every manufacturer, now reflected in Euro 6 vehicle pricing, but for MAN operators, that cost could be recouped by improved vehicle performance. “Major fleet operators Maritime and Fowler Welch run large numbers of MAN Euro 6 vehicles recording significantly improved fuel and AdBlue efficiencies,” Evans added. “Routine operating conditions in both fleets saw fuel consumption at over 10 mpg, both reporting this is well above their current fleet average. MAN’s Euro 6 AdBlue usage is running at less than three per cent,” he added. “A lot of people ask why our TGX tractors have an AdBlue tank of just 24 litres capacity compared to others with 50 and even 64-litre tanks. The simple answer is we don’t use enough to warrant tanks of that size. If you take the difference between us and one manufacturer reported to be running at over seven per cent on AdBlue, an average 50 vehicle fleet operator could add around £30,000 to their profits, just on MAN’s AdBlue savings alone! “Add in the impressive fuel figures for TGX tractors, which are still more or less fresh out of the box, and operators will be able to adopt a more relaxed and realistic view of Euro 6. “Euro 6 is a fact of life now. However, leading rental companies have good offers, so everyone can try before they buy. “Not everyone wants or needs to start acquiring Euro 6 trucks right now, ” Evans said. “So many operators may well find this is the best way to gain initial hands-on experience of the new technology.”

Working together, we can help build a better industry for all. At Mercedes-Benz we like to do things properly and we think you do too. So when it comes to driver training, we always aim to go that bit further and deliver a product that is ahead of the rest. That’s Issue 325 July 2014 why our training is more about improving every aspect of driver and industry professionalism, and not just about reaching a legislation standard. We’ve put a lot of thought and effort into our courses too, and not only are they fully interactive and interesting, we’ve made them enjoyable too. Come see. Come train with us. We’re professionals and we think you are too. For more information call 0800 090 090, or visit www.mercedes-benzdrivertraining.co.uk.

The new Mercedes-Benz Actros premium long-haul tractor unit range was the star attraction for some of the North-West’s leading road transport operators, at a launch event staged by leading dealer Enza.

Held at the Oulton Park race circuit in Cheshire, the event gave invited guests their first chance to put the vehicle through its paces on UK roads. New Actros is the ultimate premium truck for longdistance transport. From the outset, designers and engineers were determined to provide the best possible comfort, driving dynamics, safety, productivity and operating economy, as well as a sweeping range of cab sizes, engine ratings and options, allowing customers to tailor vehicles perfectly for any application. The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The 81 guests took turns to head out on a 17-mile test drive, carefully chosen to simulate a variety of typical driving conditions. The route included single- and dualMark May reckons the new Mercedes-Benz Actros is ʻbrilliantʼ. carriageway roads. Each of the four demonstrator trucks provided for the event made 10 journeys - a total of almost 700 miles covered on the day. On each trip, the mpg figure achieved was recorded and at the end of the day the winner was Craig Stewart, logistics manager at Widnes-based Ray Stewart Haulage, who averaged an impressive 11.4 mpg in the 510 bhp V8-powered Actros 2551, and 11.8 mpg in the 450 bhp Actros 2545 model. Between journeys, guests also enjoyed ‘hot laps’ of the Oulton Park circuit in two-seater racing cars piloted by professional drivers. PERSONAL INJURY SPECIALISTS Transport manager Mark May of food waste and animal by-products recycling specialist John Pointon & Sons, summed up the feelings of many when he said: “It was a great day, very informative and enjoyable, and superbly organised. The new Actros is brilliant. The driving experience was fantastic and if the fuel performance figures are to be believed it will be an unbeatable all-round package. The previous Actros is a very good truck - but this new one is a huge step forward.”

utomotive tracking and security technology firm Road Angel Fleet used the Birmingham show to mark the worldwide debut of its latest Tough Track asset tracker device. Tough Track features a patented impactresilient casing which the firm said protects even the most remotely located items due to its bullet-proof material and a self-contained power source. Road Angel said Tough Track’s ability to be bolted or welded into place makes it the first tracking device with an internal aerial not to be housed in plastic. With a patented armoured case specifically designed to deal with the most hostile of environments, Tough Track has been designed to withstand serious impact and weather conditions – and because of it having its own power supply, it should work for up to 10 years without requiring attention. “Many assume tracking is an expensive business, but thanks to Tough Track we are now able to bring a unit to market that can cost-effectively protect a wide range of items,” said Road Angel Group’s Carys Seabourne.

ridgestone used the Commercial Vehicle Show to announce it had won a major contract with commercial vehicle rental, contract hire and maintenance specialist Ryder Europe. The multi-million pound contract covers Ryder’s 24,500 trucks and trailers and is for a further five years. It cements the partnership between Bridgestone and Ryder until 2018. Greg Ward, Bridgestone’s commercial sales director, said talks had been going on for a number of months and revealed 90 per cent of the business will be centred in the UK, with a small amount extending into Ireland and Germany. “We are thrilled to be in a position to celebrate our extended fleet partnership with Ryder, whom we have built

up a long-standing and unique partnership over the last 15 years,” Ward said. “To have signed a five-year extension deal is a huge coup for everyone at Bridgestone and we look forward to renewing existing relationships and building new ones in the future.” Bridgestone’s Truck Point support network was cited in the talks as a major factor in Ryder’s decision to opt for the Bridgestone deal, with its 24-hour tyre management service being part of the clincher. Ryder fleet services director, Terry Dillon said: “The contract will ensure Ryder and its customers receive the best in class tyre management from Bridgestone and its Truck Point network partners.”

utch truck manufacturer and part of the massive Paccar Corporation, DAF Trucks was conspicuous by its absence at the CV Show this year. “The CV Show is a two-year show,” said head of DAF Trucks in the UK, Ray Ashworth. “Do we have something new each year? No. But we will be there next year,” he confirmed. He said the signs of the economy improving were there. “GDP [gross domestic product] is up, the Bank of England is not acting on interest rates, and wage rates are on the increase. We are all feeling great – but nobody is buying trucks!” he exclaimed. But he’s optimistic that things will improve pretty soon. “There are still Euro 5 trucks waiting to be registered. The rental companies have large numbers that will be registered by the end of the year.” He said the rush to buy Euro 5 trucks ahead of the deadline caused distortions in the market and that, if all DAF trucks had now been registered, its market share would be 36 per cent. He said there was the same reluctance with Euro 5 as there was with other technology. “There were concerns over AdBlue, now they are history. There were problems with digital

Ray Ashworth said NEC event is a “twoyear show” tachographs, they too are now history and it will be the same with Euro 6 as time moves on and operators need to invest in new trucks. It will be about June before we know what our market share truly is.” He said there was no reason why growth in truck sales shouldn’t be in a ‘straight line’. “Truck sales will take off in the second half of the year and by the year end, I predict we will be back where we were – in fact I believe all the manufactures will be back to where they were at about the same time.”

Whale is offering three versions – the Micro (3.2-3.5 tonnes), the Midi (3.5-4.5 tonnes) and the Major (7.5 tonnes). The show marked the first appearance of the Micro and Midi models, with one featured on the Whale stand and one by the front entrance to the show. Whale also displayed its Medium Volume Combination (MVC) – the workhorse of many a liquid waste tanker fleet. The Euro 6 vehicle was destined for service with TIP, and was fitted with Whale’s new ESN Environmental Package. Showcasing its capabilities at the heavyduty end of the market, Whale also displayed

its high-specification KaiserWhale Continuous Dirty Water Recycler, built on a 32-tonne GVW Volvo FM Euro 5 chassis and bound for service with Essex-based operator, Flowline. Specifically designed to be a multipurpose heavy-duty contractor’s vehicle, the KaiserWhale is a powerful jetter and sewer cleaner available in 16, 18, 26 and 44 tonnes configurations, as well as demountable variants. “The contrast between the new CityWhale ranges and the MVC and KaiserWhale vehicles on display at the CV Show this year demonstrates our ability to deliver effective, fully compliant solutions across a very broad range of operational requirements,” said Whale Tankers’ commercial director, Chris Anderson. “In short, no job is either too big or too small for a Whale.”

ISUZU ROCKS EURO 6

suzu Truck unveiled four trucks from its recently launched Euro 6 line-up, as well as a new genuine parts club – an initiative available for all existing and future Isuzu Truck UK customers that will potentially save them cash in the short and long term – at the NEC this year. Two versions of the new, lighter N75.150 Urban 4x2 rigid were on display. One truck was fitted with a Petit Forestier refrigerated body with Carrier Xarios fridge system, the second mounted with a dropside body, popular with small building firms. Weight has been shaved off using a lighter engine – a four-cylinder three-litre 150 PS engine rather than a four-cylinder 5.2-litre 190 PS lump that was previously the only version available in its 7.5-tonner Euro 5 versions. A Euro 6 version of Isuzu’s popular N75.190 4x2 rigid with a tipper body (both 150 PS Urban and 190 PS Forward models come with either manual transmission or Isuzu’s nifty Easyshift gearbox) and a Euro

Isuzu Truck UK’s marketing director Keith Child said: “While the new Euro 6 trucks are the main talking point of the stand, we are also launching Isuzu Truck’s new Genuine Parts Club. “All existing Isuzu Truck customers received their membership pack details well before the show opened,” Child added. “Being a member of the club, our customers also receive regular offers on accessories, genuine parts and service items from us and their local dealers.” An area of the stand was dedicated to the Genuine Parts Club and the company launched a dedicated website to support the initiative. By the time you read this, two lucky people will have found out if they won the fabulous prize in a draw of a long weekend for two in the Italian city of Verona – near where the Isuzu Urban is assembled.

ision Unique Equipment (VUE) has launched a new telematics service aimed to give smaller businesses access to fleet tracking technology used by multi-national companies. Called VUEmatics, the system combines CCTV cameras and telematics kit developed specifically for fleets of 10 to 150 vehicles. VUEmatics is pitched as a one-box system that records and stores video footage and driving data such as location, acceleration, braking and speed for all fleet vehicles – enabling smaller truck operators to monitor their fleet from one central location. “We’ve been speaking with lots of SME fleet owners who want more than just a one camera dashboard recording device, but found the current telematics solutions are aimed at bigger fleets and too expensive for smaller businesses to consider,” said VUE managing director, Glen Mullins.

“That’s why we have developed VUEmatics. It’s a fixed-fee solution which will give both SMEs and fleet insurers the insight they need to cost-effectively manage the efficiency and risk of their fleet.” VUE has already installed its technology in a number of large UK commercial fleets to provide CCTV and accident recording systems. It said its new product should enable smaller fleets to manage productivity, control fuel costs, increase fleet safety and security and boost fleet sustainability through utilising camera and vehicle data.

Elsewhere, the firm’s MOFFETT M4 Pro Future truck-mounted forklift sported an optimised engine to increase torque and lower fuel consumption and emissions, and an 40 per cent boost to lifting speed at idle to further reduce fuel consumption. Next up was Cargotec’s MULTILIFT XR 24S demountable body system, which provides a 24-tonne capacity and 32-tonne GVW with four axles. The new XR 24S model joins the latest MULTILIFT XR Power Range hooklifts for demountable load handling. Finally, the new HIAB R099 E1 HiPro Roller was also on the stand, which Cargotec bills as the first roll loader of its kind to operate without requiring a stabiliser and offers a capacity up to 10 tonnes/m. The company said a wide range of attachable tools are available to enable the crane to adapt to a host of different tasks.

he clever SOMI (Same Outside, More Inside) trailer with its innovative loading system that allows more pallets to be loaded into it than a conventional trailer attracted a lot of attention at this year’s CV Show. It’s a simple, yet ingenious setup that uses a belly in the trailer to soak up some of the load so more pallets can be loaded over the top. It works like this: First, eight pallets are loaded at the front, another eight on the

centre of the deck and another eight on the rear deck. The driver/operator then presses the ‘Go’ button and the central deck lowers, both rear decks rise, then the rear upper deck and internal walls roll forwards automatically. Then the rear deck relocates ready for loading. Its designers say the system allows the trailer to carry 10 more pallets (a total of 34) that’s eight more than a standard 26 pallet load offering a 31 per cent increase in load.

Cartwright’s new standard bearer

T

railer manufacturer Cartwright displayed an innovative new trailer design. A straight-frame curtainsider compliant to EN 1246XL standard, it is complemented by the company’s new roofsuspended load restraint system – already in use with a number of the company’s customers. Cartwright developed the new load restraint system using a combination of (CAD) in-house design with specialist software and field trials across a number of operators and applications that have proved very successful. The design is based upon a suspended rave to rave strapping system where straps or nets are suspended on bungees in the roof of the trailer. These can be infinitely varied to suit individual customer requirements – including specific applications and types of load. The nets or straps can be brought down into any position to cope with varying heights and types of load within the length of the

trailer, effectively netting or strapping the load to the bed of the trailer and preventing any lateral or transverse load movement. With a fully galavanised chassis, 30 mm phenolic non-slip ply hardwood floor sections laid on top of the trailer beams for a flush surface and more robust chassis and floor rated to ISO1496 standard, the trailer also features Magnelis bearers and side raves up to 10 times more resistant to corrosion, while the side raves include pullup side lashing ring options for deck-to-deck load securing. Group managing director of the company Mark Cartwright said: “This trailer unveils a range of exciting new value-added features we believe are at the cutting edge of technology in advanced trailer manufacturing. “We’ve always been proud of our reputation as innovators and these new features are taking trailer manufacturing to a new level, with the ultimate beneficiary being our customers,” he added.

he CV Show 2014 saw the UK debut of the Iveco Eurocargo with Euro 6 engine technology. Two were on the stand – one a 75E21/P sleeper cab 7.5-tonner model on a 4455 mm wheelbase chassis with a maximum power tector 5 engine and comprehensive specification suitable for owner-drivers, and a 12 tonne Eurocargo 120EL19/P (also fitted with a tector 5 engine) on a 4815 mm wheelbase. Iveco’s EL chassis reduces height by over 55 mmm compared to the standard 12 tonne 4x2 rigid and, with a one-step cab entry design, lowers the height and makes it easier to access for drivers on multi-drop work. TRUCKSTOP NEWS CV SHOW SPECIAL

ISSUE 325 SUMMER 2014

RENAULT BACK WITH A BANG!

U

nder the banner ‘A Truck is a Profit Centre’, Renault Trucks’ welcome return to the CV Show after a substantial absence was nothing short of dynamic. With the full line-up on display, operators could evaluate each particular vehicle range and judge which would suit their own operation best. Models from its new Euro 6 medium and heavy truck ranges are beginning to be seen on UK roads (200 Range T versions have already been sold) and operators are reporting excellent fuel economy, reliability – and drivers are extremely impressed with the new trucks. A new two-year unlimited mileage warranty across the complete Euro 6 range, plus an

innovative three-tier Truckplus used vehicle offer and the launch of a drive to find the most fuel-efficient truck driver in the UK and Ireland (dubbed Renault Trucks’ Optifuel Challenge) were also launched on the stand at the show, while experts were on hand to explain and offer advice and deals on finance, insurance and aftersales service. A Fuel Eco Zone informed visitors about how Renault Trucks’ fuel-efficiency solutions could help them save up to 15 per cent. Renault Trucks’ sister company – contracthire and truck rental specialist BRS – shared the stand and promoted the benefits of using contract-hire as a as a cost-effective way companies can put new vehicles on the road. Range T is Renault Trucks’ flagship model Range D distribution trucks come in 10-18 tonnes and Range D Wide 16-26 tonnes Renault Trucks’ Range K is tough, top-end heavyduty off-roader. utomotive logistics provider, heavy plant and chemical transport business Brit European used its stand at the CV Show to celebrate its 90th anniversary. The Crewe-based firm said it was marking the occasion with the compilation of a book that tracks its history from 1924 to the present day, which is being put together

by Brit European group sales and marketing manager, Ed Beresford. Last year, the company introduced duel-fuel trucks using diesel and natural gas. “It was an innovative year for us,” Beresford said. This year, Brit European has introduced telematics to its fleet – which the company said continues its trend for embracing new technology.

pecialist heavy-haulage trailer manufacturer Goldhofer has revealed its new MPA Troika axle at the CV Show. Goldhofer said its innovative axle design optimises vehicle handling and manoeuvrability due to its implementation of a suspension stroke of 315 mm, plus an individual choice of ride height and a steering angle up to 60 degrees. The axle comprises one wheel carrier, one strut and one suspension arm. The manufacturer said the stripped-back design creates durability and low kerb weights, as well as easy maintenance, while the independent response of the axles allows the

trailer to handle uneven surfaces more confidently. The MPA Troika axle has been fitted to the company’s STZ-MPA low-loader, which Goldhofer said is its most agile trailer yet. Andover Trailers is Goldhofer’s sole distributor in the UK and Ireland. Its sales director, Ivan Collins, said: “This latest innovation is a really exciting development. The show gives us the opportunity to demonstrate to customers how the technology works first-hand, and answer any questions they may have on the new product.”

Details were scarce when we went to press ahead of the official launch on September 5, but the Swedish manufacturer told Truckstop News the new FHs will be available in both Euro 5 and 6 form, and pack a vast amount of upgrades and improvements. Leading the charge for fuel efficiency is Volvoʼs new I-See function (Truckstop News, issue 301). The system, which works alongside the I-Shift automated transmission, is claimed to cut consumption by five per cent by storing information about the route the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure progress is as economical as possible,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Truck Corporation. An additional five per cent saving in fuel use is possible with Volvo Trucksʼ new Fuel Package. This package encompasses training and monthly assistance – Fuel Advice – and its aim is to cut fuel costs by changing driving styles and increasing knowledge of how to drive for maximum fuel-efficiency. Volvoʼs new I-Torque Euro 6 driveline – production of which for the European market will get under way in autumn 2013 – should make for additional fuel savings. “ITorque reduces fuel consumption by up to With its new Volvo FH series, Volvo is ʻpushing four the envelopeʼ in re-defining what a premium per cent. Together with I-See and other minor truck can offer. improvements, the result is fuel consumption can drop by up to 10 per cent. For the average truck, this can equate to a saving of up to 4100 litres of fuel a year,” Nilsson continued. On-road manners have received much attention, and Volvo is claiming the new trucks offer exceptional handling thatʼs much like a car. “To put things into perspective, we can even offer independent front suspension, although initially only on left-hand drive vehicles. This world-first takes handling to unsurpassed levels in the truck world,” Nilsson said.

Also of benefit to drivers are improved seats and driving position, optimised to provide a better view of the road. This is aided by an increase in the cabʼs usable window area and an innovative slimmer rear-view mirror design. Stalks and controls are arranged in priority so the most important ones are now closest to the driver, and the steering wheel now has a neck tilt function – another world-first in the truck world. Safety is high on the agenda, An all-new cab structure features more upright A-pillars, which give the cab an additional 1 m3 of interior space. This means an extra 300 litres (10.5 cu ft) of storage capacity, as well as greater comfort on board.“The cab is optimised both for work and leisure time,” Nilsson said. “A better bed, integrated parking cooler, new lighting and low noise levels among other features, all increase the chance of pleasant relaxation and a good nightʼs sleep, which in turn means drivers are less tired and more alert.” Production of the Volvo FH will start in spring 2013 for the European market.

ISSUE 325 SUMMER 2014

REGS KEEP NEW TRUCKS QUIET

T

he European Parliament has introduced a new regulation aimed at reducing noise emissions from commercial vehicles and cars over the next 12 years. The new rules will phase in new limits by July 1, 2016; 2020 and 2024. The first phase will only apply new engine noise limits to new vehicle types, while the second and the third phases will bring in lower decibel values and also include all new vehicles produced, two years after they start (ie, 2022 and 2026). The limit for standard cars will be reduced to 68 db in 12 years, from the current level of 74 db. More powerful vehicles will be allowed a margin of 1 to 9 extra decibels. The rules bring down the limit for the most powerful heavy lorries (over 12 tonnes) to 79 db from 81 db.

PDP TERMS ADJUSTED

The European Automobile Manufacturer’s Association (ACEA) said it welcomed the adoption. “These new noise limits are very ambitious, but the industry is committed to reaching them in order to ensure the health and safety of European consumers,” said ACEA secretary, Erik Jonnaert. “Already, a modern vehicle is 90 per cent quieter than one from the 1970s. The industry works hard to deliver mobility solutions which are safe, smart and sustainable across Europe. “To achieve these reduced noise levels, various sectors will need to work together, including with infrastructure providers and tyre manufacturers, as non-vehicle factors are a significant cause of road noise,” he added.

T

DRIVERS BLAST ‘CRUMBLING ROADS’

T

he government has got a long way to go to convince drivers they have the pothole problem under control, as 67 per cent of motorists think they are doing a bad or a very bad job of maintaining the nation’s roads, according to the latest research by road safety charity, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). The IAM said there is a clear lack of communication between the motoring public and local councils. A third of drivers (34 per cent) think their council is cutting spending on road maintenance, but 60 per cent of drivers don’t know if budgets are being cut –

17

suggesting councils are performing poorly on informing people of their road-mending plans. “Despite the government’s pothole review, there is a high level of dissatisfaction with the efforts of authorities to keep our roads safe and smooth drive or ride on,” said IAM chief executive, Simon Best. “The government needs to convince people they have a real cure for the pothole pandemic. This can only be achieved through clear communication on new policies, more sharing of resources, sustained long-term funding and a continued commitment to eradicating the maintenance backlog of crumbling British roads.”

he rules governing the Petroleum Driver Passport (PDP) are being adjusted to enable training and assessment to be moved away from drivers’ ADR qualification expiry dates. Since its launch in January, the PDP scheme has now seen over 700 drivers take practical or written assessment, and almost 200 PDP cards have so far been issued. During development, industry was clear that it wanted to incorporate existing best practice and ways of working into the rules of the scheme and to maximise collaboration with the ADR and Driver CPC schemes to avoid creating any unnecessary extra training and assessment burden. As work has commenced to implement PDP, employers and training providers raised practical issues which arise as a result of the interaction between two scheme features: the alignment of PDP and ADR renewal dates, and the requirement to undertake PDP training no more than four months prior to their ADR/PDP renewal date.

Having looked into various solutions to these issues, the scheme manager, Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), has stated the simplest solution is to allow drivers and employers to ‘de-align’ the ADR and PDP expiry dates. Upon receipt of the automatically generated PDP card from SQA, candidates or their employer can submit an application to have the PDP expiry date de-aligned from the ADR expiry date. SQA have designed a pro-forma that informs the candidate/employer that they must return the original PDP card; requests the new desired expiry date (must be prior to expiry date on original PDP card); contains payment details (£15 ‘de-alignment’ fee) payable by the candidate/employer; requests reason for change of expiry date and sector employed within. Once in receipt of the above information, SQA will issue a new PDP card to the candidate with the new expiry date, as requested.

NEW RULES FOR ‘SMART MOTORWAYS’

D

rivers are being urged to ensure they understand the rules governing the use of ‘Smart Motorways’ following the opening of a stretch of the new-style M25 in April. Work has been ongoing on two sections of the motorway between Junctions 23 and 25 in Hertfordshire, and between Junctions 5 and 6/7 on the Kent/Surrey border as part of the Highways Agency Programme which is said to help improve journeys and boost the UK economy. The new-style ‘Smart Motorway’ will span some 20 miles of the M25, and sees the permanent conversion of the hard shoulder for traffic to be used as a normal running lane to increase capacity on these busy stretches of road. However, concerns have been raised that motorists may not be aware of the how these changes will affect their driving. “The changes that have been made

are quite significant, so drivers must become familiar with the types of new signs and signals they will see and what they should do in the event of a breakdown,” said Malcolm Bingham, head of road network management policy at the Freight Transport Association. “Drivers need to make themselves aware of the changes to the road. “The Highways Agency has produced an information leaflet on the new ‘Smart Motorway’ operation, and the FTA is urging fleet operators and their drivers to look to the advice provided and ensure they are as smart in the use or the road as the technology is on these new sections.” The initial section of the M25 Smart Motorway between Junctions 23 (A1M/ South Mimms exit) to 25 (Potters Bar) was opened Monday, April 14, with the second stretch to be opened between Junctions 5 (Sevenoaks/A21) to 7 (M23 exit) in May.

employer will be held responsible for compensating you for an injury caused by a defective load, no matter who packed it. If you are self employed or an agency driver, you also benefit from the same rights enjoyed by the employees of the company you are contracted to work for. However, it is worth noting that if you were in charge of loading the vehicle the accident may be found to have happened entirely due to your negligence, in which case a claim for compensation would probably not be successful. As with previous articles the common trend remains the effect on the injured person’s life, and although using the process of law to make personal injury claims as a means of redress cannot truly compensate for the trauma and inconvenience suffered, it can assist in requiring the guilty party to provide medical treatment and rehabilitation, in addition to financial relief by way of awards of compensation. As previously indicated, under the current law and procedures the basic aim of an accident claim is to try and return the injured party to the position that he or she would otherwise have been in had the accident not happened.

using mobile phones while driving

Tel: 353397 Redundancy of 01733 agency workers

Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. For a second and/or subsequent offence to multiply accordingly, for example, second offence in a commercial vehicle 2 x 21 days.

Fax: 01733 557 235 E-mail: charlotte.rowley@kelseypb.co.uk One of the offences some drivers have committed is using a mobile phone while driving. The legislation defines this offence as follows: No person is to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using a handheld mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.

VOLVO TAKES EURO 6 POWER CROWN

V

olvo has commenced sales of its toppower 750 bhp Euro 6 FH16 - meaning the Swedish manufacturer has regained its position as the most powerful production truck in the world. The first Euro 6 versions of its FH16 will be delivered in early June. Volvo’s new generation of 16-litre engines produce a choice of 750, 650 or 550 bhp, and all conform to the latest Euro 6 emission legislation. In addition to lower emissions, the new engines also offer higher torque at low revs, a more powerful engine brake and quieter operation.

“The Volvo FH16 with Euro 6 engine has the same high reliability, the same fuel consumption, the same power and peak torque as before,” said John Comer, product manager at Volvo Trucks - UK and Ireland. “But now the driver has access to maximum torque from just 900 or 950 rpm depending on horsepower rating.” All the engines are equipped with I-Shift automated transmission, although the 550 bhp version is available with a 14-speed manual gearbox option. All engine versions can be specified with Volvo’s VEB+ engine brake.
