RENAULT’S EURO 6 TECH
R
enault Trucks has revealed its new Euro 6 engines, which it claims delivers reduced pollution and keeps a check on fuel consumption. For its heavy-duty range, the French manufacturer is offering a new six-cylinder 11-litre engine designated the DTI 11. This will be available with three power ratings: 380 bhp (1800 Nm), 430 bhp (2050 Nm) and 460 bhp (2200 Nm). Although its architecture has much in common with the Euro 5 engine, Renault said this latest model breaks new ground with its injection and depollution systems. Injection is based on a common rail system, which offers the main advantage of supplying extremely accurate and high pressure
injection, even at low engine speeds. The DTI 11 engine is combined with an SCR (selective catalytic reduction) aftertreatment system for reducing polluting emissions to comply with the Euro 6 regulation. To provide optimal performance, this system must operate at a sufficiently high temperature. Renault is meeting this requirement by combining different solutions, such as exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) during engine start-up phases, the use of controlled valves at the intake and the exhaust as well as specific combustion strategies. Finally, the post-treatment system is fitted with a particulate filter, as is the case with all Renault Trucks’ Euro 5 engines.
This enables the level of particle emissions to be considerably reduced, capturing virtually all of them, even the very smallest. This technology has also been chosen for the new six-cylinder 13-litre engine. However, this model features an electronic pump injector system, which is particularly suitable for engines with this displacement. The DTI 13 will be available with the following power ratings: 440 bhp (2200 Nm), 480 bhp (2400 Nm) and 520 bhp (2550 Nm). For its medium-duty range, Renault has developed a new fourcylinder, five-litre engine designated DTI 5. It will be available with 210 bhp (800 Nm) and 240 bhp (900 Nm) versions. As for the DTI 8, this features six cylinders in line with a displacement of eight litres. It will be
available in 250 bhp (950 Nm), 280 bhp (1050 Nm) and 320 bhp (1200 Nm) versions. The five- and eight-litre Euro 6 engines are fitted with an EGR system. This recycles part of the exhaust gases during combustion and reduces the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOx) produced by the engine. The remaining NOx is then eliminated by catalysis via the SCR system. Finally, the particulate filter enables the vehicle to comply
with the very low level of particle emissions demanded by the new standard. Furthermore, this engine is equipped with a common-rail injection with a maximum pressure of 2000 bars. Thanks to the flexibility offered by multiple injection (up to five injection events per engine cycle), these engines deliver very high levels of performance in terms of consumption, noise and performance.
dashboard to provide the driver with advice to improve fuel efficiency (for example, by recommending shifts to higher gears). Also new are the seats, steering wheel, dashboard display and switches. DAF is also claiming the XF offers unequalled interior space, which has resulted from installing the engine and cooling system in the chassis. This means the height of the cab floor has remained virtually the same, increasing by just 3 cm to 1.47 m. DAF reckons the low cab floor makes the XF Super Space Cab the most spacious cab on the market, with a total volume of 12.6 m3. Safety has also been improved. The truck has one-piece door windows, tweaked mirror configuration and position to reduce blindspots, plus Vehicle Stability
Control (VSC), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) systems. The manufacturer stated an Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) will become available later next year, which is designed to brake the vehicle independently from the driver and bring the truck to a complete stop if necessary in an emergency situation. On the outside, a great deal has changed. The exterior has new lower and upper grilles, a chrome panel sporting the DAF logo, optimised air flows for cooling, a new galvanised steel bumper, completely redesigned lighting (including headlight units with LED lighting - a first for the truck industry), plus new mudguards, side fenders, sideskirts and roof spoiler. The new XF will go into production during the spring of 2013.
DAF UNVEILS NEW XF
DAF Trucks has unleashed it’s all-new flagship XF heavy truck. Presented to crowds during September’s IAA Show in Hanover, the Dutch manufacturer said the vehicle has been developed to give optimum efficiency and the highest levels of driver comfort.
T
he new XF has a completely new chassis, new drivelines including the new Euro 6 PACCAR MX engines, a new exterior design and an overhauled interior. The manufacturer said it was never the company’s objective to be the first on the market with Euro 6 solutions. Instead, it took its time to ensure it meets the Euro 6 requirements in the best way possible – practical, well-thought-
through and with the highest level of product quality. The new PACCAR MX-13 Euro 6 engine can be supplied with outputs of 410, 460 bhp and 510 bhp, with high torque outputs from 2000-2500 Nm, available across a broad engine speed range (1000-1425 rpm). DAF said a key principle when developing the new driveline was to keep fuel consumption at the same low level as that of the current Euro 5 ATe engines, without compromising
durability (its design life is 1.6 million km) and vehicle availability (service intervals are quoted as up to 150,000 km). The Euro 6 PACCAR MX engines are linked to redesigned manual and automated 12- and 16-speed PACCAR gearboxes, produced by ZF. The new functionalities of the automated transmissions include EcoRoll and Fast Shift, which improve driving comfort and further reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The same applies to the new rear axles that have new, longer final-drive ratios for lower engine speeds. The new XF offers several innovations as part of DAF’s Advanced Transport Efficiency (ATe) programme. Included in the package is the Driver Performance Assistant, which uses the central display on the

Specialist tanker operator BP McKeefry Ltd has recently introduced a unique truck and tanker combination to its Basingstoke-based fleet for operation in Inner London.
The Volvo FH540 8x2 rear-steer rigid and specialist tanker joins a total BP McKeefry Group fleet of 100 trucks and 200 tankers. It is thought to be the first ever FH 8x2 rigid supplied by Dennison Commercials, the Volvo Truck & Bus Dealer for Northern Ireland. Crossland Tankers Ltd in conjunction with BP McKeefry and Dennison Commercials/Volvo Trucks. “The sales function within Dennison really came to the party when specifying and designing this vehicle,” said Peter Esler, managing director of BP McKeefry. “We initially went out to the market with our proposed concept, but Volvo came back with the most detail on the technical side, which aided us in making informed decisions and gave us confidence in its ability to deliver.” A number of ECU modifications were carried out, and the 540 bhp was opted for as it is required to drive a number of features on the tanker, including the HPT high-pressure jetting pump and liquid ring vacuum pump. The jet system can pump 500 litres per minute at 200 bar pressure, and the vacuum pump operates at 1820 cu ft per minute suction rate.

SPEAK BACK
What’s your view?
Star Letter: The following item appeared in the (Glasgow) Herald on September 13: Bus and lorry drivers caught using their mobile phones behind the wheel could have their licences suspended under a new crackdown. Police in Scotland have joined forces with the traffic commissioner to clamp down on the problem. They have signed a memorandum of understanding, formalising the process whereby police notify the traffic commissioner with details when drivers of Large Goods Vehicles (LGVs) and Passenger Carrying Vehicles (PCVs) are caught carrying out mobile phone offences. While police can issue a financial penalty, the traffic commissioner can consider further action against the driver and/or the company, which may include the suspension of an LGV or PCV licence. Joan Aitken, traffic commissioner for Scotland, said: “Using a mobile phone - whether to take or make a call or text - is a road safety risk. Too many accidents are happening because the driver was on a phone call or

It’s bad enough that our parking areas are stuck a good distance from the actual services, but to add insult to injury the world and his wife, kids and dog are not discouraged from using the truck parking area. This creates noise and extra hazards, with kids and dogs running around like it’s a play area. It’s aggravating having paid in excess of £20 to park up after a 15-hour day, needing rest, to then

A
s the driver of a large articulated goods vehicle travelling all over Scotland, I see professional drivers daily flouting the regulations in respect of mobile phones and risking the consequences. I contend that ALL those caught should suffer the full force of the law. What I fail to see is why the commissioner feels it appropriate to consider taking away a driver’s entitlement to drive when this sanction is not available for car and van drivers committing the same offences. My understanding of the law as it applies in Scotland is a person can not be tried for the same offence twice. A person dealt with by a court is deemed to have “Tholed their assize” (yes, really) – or served their sentence, if you like. I know the law has been changed to apply to very serious crimes where new and compelling evidence
emerges, but that’s hardly relevant here. I also understand LGV and PCV licences are vocational and held at the discretion of the traffic commissioner, but I feel disqualification from driving is a very draconian penalty for a matter dealt with by way of a fixed penalty notice for others. She asserts “too many accidents are happening” because of texts. I am curious where she gets her evidence for LGV and PCV drivers being involved in any greater number of accidents than the wider motoring public. I think a summons to the offices of the commissioner for a summary dressing down where the culprit is left in no doubt as to their shortcomings and warnings of the dire consequences of a return visit would be far more effective. Using a handheld mobile while driving a large vehicle is not big, it’s not clever and it’s not funny. I implore all professionals to invest in a hands-free device – they have never been cheaper and could be a lot less expensive than an unexpected (and unpaid) holiday from driving. OK, rant over! David Russell, Penicuik
GIVE ME A BREAK! be woken up to find the truck surrounded by the ‘Happy Holiday Caravan Club’. It’s soul-destroying enough having to queue for food, drink or a toilet break (one often being sacrificed for the other) in a half-hour stop as the general public invade the services, but to be unable to rest due to dogs barking, kids playing, music blasting or even BBQs happening in the truck rest areas is unacceptable. Speaking to service station management – who are clearly only interested in the increased revenue – is a waste of time. They should, hunt for Nanna Birk Larsen’s murderer. It’s a dark, twisting tale that’s utterly addictive, and this audiobook provides a first-class portrayal of the story. Read superbly by Christian Rodska, The Killing is set over 20 days and charts the Copenhagen police department’s race to unravel the clues and bring the girl’s murderer to justice. This is riveting and relentless in equal measure.
however, appreciate the truck drivers are their lifeblood throughout the whole 12 months of the year, and not just June to August. Next time, I’ll be very tempted to park my 18-tonne truck right outside the main front doors – it can’t be any noisier. Even a sign asking the masses to respect the peace and quiet the truckers need would be a start! Tiredness kills – and makes this driver extra grumpy! Thanks for listening to my rant. Anne Tibbett, Manchester
THE FIGHT CONTINUES… After the disappointing response from minister of transport for road safety Mike Penning concerning the issues of driver fatigue (Truckstop News, October), I have sent the following reply: Dear Mr Penning, Thank you for your letter, dated June 17, which I received August 3 from my local MP. Presumably the letter had been left lying on a desk somewhere between your and her office to explain the delay in reply. My response has come from several meetings with relevant parties to determine possible future action, hence the time in responding to your communication. I would like to make comment that you have addressed none of the issues I raised concerning driver fatigue and unsafe working practices in the haulage industry. Rather, you have resorted to the rule book, which although astronomical in size, all drivers are supposed to know anyway – fairly pointless then, that you have replied at all. Perhaps in future, if you are to try and teach someone to suck eggs, you may care to highlight examples as to why the eggs are there in the first place. Could you please confirm the following: Starting work on a Monday morning, sleeping Monday night, and then being told you are working Tuesday night, instead of Tuesday day, is not dangerous. It is quite acceptable to do three 15-hour shifts within a week, thereby perhaps only getting 15 hours’ sleep in three days. It is OK for companies to ignore the 10-hour shift working nights rule and ‘persuade’ drivers to do 15-hour night shifts, on threat of losing their job if they refuse. It is acceptable for companies to plan routes that don’t take regulation breaks into consideration, and pressurise the driver into taking breaks while perhaps they are unloading, or by ‘fiddling’ their tachograph.
All of the above goes on, on a regular basis, and yet I have witnessed VOSA completely illegally checking drivers’ tachographs while they are on breaks (in motorway services), and some of my driver colleagues have spoken with VOSA employees who didn’t know either the rules and regulations, or who didn’t know how trucks work. Simple procedures, which are violated by the so-called authorities, purely because they are after easy revenue. In the meantime, a lot of drivers are piloting 44-tonne killing machines on little over minimum wage, and largely over legal working hours, purely because the government is more interested in hoarding fuel duty and letting immigrants work here, thereby lowering standards (a lot of immigrants have never even passed an HGV 1 license), consequently endangering other road users. But perhaps you approve of all the above also? You may not be aware, but mobile workers are not taken into consideration in the Employment Rights Act (this has just gone to the High Court to be challenged), which is perhaps something to do with this government’s ‘open door policy’ – the door’s open as long as you have no intention of helping the country – and the government’s consistent greed in road tax, fuel duty and lack of regulation over motorway service stations has all but crippled this industry. But then, of course messrs Blair and Brown made peaceful protest illegal, didn’t they? I strongly suggest then, that you gain some sense of responsibility as the road safety minister and start working to help the drivers, and in turn the hauliers, as opposed to penalising them for delivering the goods you buy every day. It is exactly the legislation that is making this industry so unsafe! I look forward to your direct reply to the above questions, and then can move forward with the next step should you so wish to dance around the serious issues again. Yours sincerely, Karen Bancroft

RETURN LOADS REVIEWED AND RATED
O
nline haulage marketplace returnloads.net has launched the UK’s first fully integrated eBay-style user review system. The company said that for the first time, thousands of hauliers will be able to benchmark each other’s performance and reliability as third-party distributors on the new returnloads.net site. The relaunch of the service sets the scene for a greater degree of quality and transparency within the marketplace – something returnloads.net owner and established logistics entrepreneur, Richard Newbold, believes is essential to reduce the thousands of vehicles returning backto-base empty. “If the road haulage industry is serious about slashing the number of vehicles driving around the UK empty, it is crucial there is a central online marketplace in which hauliers can seamlessly exchange information,” Newbold said. “After all, the carbon emissions, not to mention the cost savings to be made, are phenomenal. “Some members transact thousands of loads a year on the site. It is not unusual for them to save upwards of £30,000 in administrative costs alone, especially for those with fleets of 11-plus vehicles. “Before this technology became available, haulage firms would normally have employed a couple of members of staff whose job it was to keep the fleet moving and to find back loads from wherever the vehicles ended up becoming
empty in the UK. They would have to phone around a much smaller network of trusted hauliers, often struggling to quickly find a suitable load or having to travel many miles empty in order to collect their next load.” The firm said it always been the aim of returnloads.net to make the whole process of identifying a load is as easy as possible. Now the loads come straight to the haulier through the site’s notification system. Alternatively, members can simply click on the interactive map of the UK and easily find the nearest load to where their empty truck is located. The www.returnloads.net review system works in a very similar way to eBay. Once a service has been provided, both parties are offered the opportunity to leave a 1-5 feedback for one another in the form of a star rating, along with comments. This star rating is then displayed against any loads or vehicles placed and on a company’s profile page (subject to the subscribed package). This two-way review system enables both the supplier (the company looking to place a load) and the carrier (the haulier with the empty vehicle) to see how reliable each other is. According to the firm, in the last 12 months alone the site’s community of hauliers has managed to collectively save over 200,000 empty HGV journeys. With new functionality constantly being added to improve the site, this is expected to rise considerably over the coming months.

FIRST NEW FH SOLD FOR CHARITY
V
olvo Trucks has sold the first series-manufactured new Volvo FH to the highest bidder on eBay for a sum of €150,000 (£120,000). The truck is a unique one-off collector’s item, and all proceeds will be going to charity. Bids started at €1 (81p) on September 19, and the auction was open for 10 days to bidders from all over Europe – including Russia, Turkey and Israel. Volvo Trucks said it will donate all the proceeds to Star for Life, a South African non-profit organisation that aims to reduce the number of HIV-positive high school students. Then, in the spring of 2013, the winner will be invited to hand over the money in person at a ceremony in South Africa. “Our aim with this auction is to raise as much money as possible for the Star for Life programme,” said Claes Nilsson, president
Volvo Trucks EMEA sales & global brand, at the start of the auction. The new Volvo FH auctioned was a visibly unique and high-spec special edition truck with an exclusive ‘number one’ emblem on the windscreen.

PERSONAL INJURY SPECIALISTS
All of the accident victims mentioned in these articles are actual clients of my firm, Hinchliffes Solicitors. They have kindly given their permission for the disclosure of their details, and in particular of their real life experiences of incidents resulting in personal injury claims, and the steps taken to make a successful accident compensation claim. All of these clients contacted my firm after seeing our details in Truckstop News. In this article I highlight a fairly common situation where a driver is required to deliver and unload a lorry or trailer that has been packed by someone else - either a fellow employee of the same company, or by an employee of an entirely different company perhaps even based abroad. It is often the case that your own employer will be held responsible for compensating you for an injury caused by a defective load, no matter who packed it. If you are self employed or an agency driver, you also benefit from the same rights enjoyed by the employees of the company you are contracted to work for. However, it is worth noting that if you were in charge of loading the vehicle the accident may be found to have happened entirely due to your negligence, in which case a claim for compensation would probably not be successful. As with previous articles the common trend remains the effect on the injured person’s life, and although using the process of law to make personal injury claims as a means of redress cannot truly compensate for the trauma and inconvenience suffered, it can assist in requiring the guilty party to provide medical treatment and rehabilitation, in addition to financial relief by way of awards of compensation. As previously indicated, under the current law and procedures the basic aim of an accident claim is to try and return the injured party to the position that he or she would otherwise have been in had the accident not happened.
In the summer of 2010, HGV driver Mr R of Telford (name withheld at client’s request) was strapping a load that had already been placed on a trailer by a colleague when an item from the load fell, striking his head. To successfully claim personal injury compensation from an employer the injured person’s solicitor must have extensive knowledge of the Health and Safety Regulations that have been breached, and be able to comprehensively set out details when first contacting the employer. Without this level of awareness the employer’s insurers will almost certainly try and exploit any perceived deficiencies or weakness in the case in an effort to avoid having to pay the injured person their rightful compensation. In Mr R’s claim, the allegations of breaches of Regulation were as follows:(a) Failed to take suitable and sufficient steps to prevent the item within the trailer from falling, contrary to Regulation 10(1) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005.
(b) Failed to take suitable and sufficient steps to prevent our client being struck by the item, contrary to Regulation 10(2) of the above Regulations. (c) Failed to ensure that the trailer was loaded in such a way as to prevent unintended movement of the contents, contrary to Regulation 10(4) of the above Regulations.

claim, there was also some affect on his pre-accident hearing difficulties. My firm sent a detailed letter to his employer, who passed this on to their insurers. Within just over 2 months the insurers accepted responsibility for the accident. By this time steps were already well underway for Mr R to be examined by an ENT surgeon so that a comprehensive medical report, setting out full details of the injuries and their consequences, could be obtained. Once this was available and had been approved by Mr R, a copy was sent to the insurers, together with details of his very modest financial losses incurred as a direct result of the accident. Settlement negotiations then started, with offers and counter offers being put forward by both sides. Within a few weeks it was possible to reach an acceptable settlement at a total figure of £2250, the vast majority of which was to compensate Mr R for his pain and suffering. He kept the full sum recovered, as my firm’s costs and the expenses we had incurred in dealing with the claim (eg paying for his medical records and the medical report) were subsequently negotiated with the insurers and paid separately. Fortunately, despite the accident circumstances Mr R suffered only a relatively minor injury, and this was reflected by the level of compensation he recovered. His employer’s insurers took a sensible approach to the claim and handled matters with reasonable efficiency, which meant it was possible to reach agreement and for Mr R to be in funds in just under six months from the date the first letter was sent to his employer. This also had the effect of keeping the legal costs to a minimum.

The Law relating to Unfair Dismissal
I elating to Unfair Dismissal
One of the offences some drivers have committed is using a mobile phone while driving. The legislation defines this offence as follows:
following: sending or receiving oral or written messages; sending or receiving facsimile documents; sending or receiving still or
Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. For a second and/or subsequent offence to multiply accordingly, for example, second offence in a commercial vehicle 2 x 21 days.

MENZIES BIKES IT FOR CHARITY
A
team of 30 cyclists from Menzies Distribution has completed a 1500 km charity bike ride along the East Coast of the UK raising more than £20,000 for the newspaper industry’s charity, NewstrAid. The team, led by managing director David McIntosh, took turns to tackle different stages of the journey from John O’Groats in Scotland to Mile End in Portsmouth over 10 days, visiting several Menzies Distribution branches along the way. The challenge, devised by McIntosh, has benefitted NewstrAid, a benevolent fund set up in 1839 to provide help for people in need from the retailing, wholesaling, distribution and circulation of newspapers and magazines. As NewstrAid was founded by Charles
Dickens – a customer of John Menzies in 1839 – McIntosh and the team decided to end the challenge at his birthplace in Portsmouth. The last leg of the journey – aptly named ‘Please Sir, I’ve Had Enough’ – started in Weybridge and the remaining six cyclists had to endure London traffic, wind and rain to make it to their final destination. McIntosh said: “As a company we had never done anything on this scale before, but our motto is ‘going the extra mile’ – so this seemed very fitting. “It was hard work cycling, often in heavy rain, but we’re really pleased with the amount we have raised from individuals and sponsors for a cause close to all our hearts.” To support Menzies Distribution and NewstrAid, visit http://tinyurl.com/cb49nmk
Fishpools warehouse manager Sean Dudley said: “The Renault Midlum Extra Light allows us to use a larger box body on a smaller truck, meaning we have the same fuel efficiency as larger trucks, but with greater manoeuvrability in residential areas, tighter turning circles and better payload. “We were attracted by the Optitronic gearbox because as we increase our distribution, we need to keep fuel costs down. We are hoping to see fuel savings as well as improved driver comfort for the longer distances being travelled. However, we are so pleased with the new Renaults so far that we are looking to replace our smaller 3.5-tonne Fords with Renaults in the near future.”
NEW RENAULTS IN JUNE
uring the recent IAA show, Renault Trucks president Heinz-Jürgen Löw announced the manufacturer’s complete product range is to be completely replaced in June 2013. Highlighting the strengthening of each brand within the Volvo Group as a result of its reorganisation, he said he intends to make Renault Trucks a model of excellence. During his press conference at the Hanover show, Löw announced the introduction of the new Euro 6 standard
will see a comprehensive replacement of the manufacturer’s Long Distance, Distribution and Construction ranges as of June next year. All the vehicles concerned are currently undergoing trials on the Renault Trucks test tracks and under actual operating conditions with a number of partner customers. “In June, there will be a real revolution,” Löw said. “Our new vehicles are going to surprise you, not only in terms of their design, but also their performance. We are aiming for excellence and are doing everything to attain it.”

VOLVO TACKLES CRANE GAME
B
aldwins Crane Hire has taken its first pair of heavy-haulage Volvo tractors to move mobile crane components and their ballast blocks, bringing the firm’s truck fleet to seven. The FH540 13-litre 8x4 tractors will be operating up to150 tonnes gcw and are rated at Category 3 STGO. Specified with 12-speed manual gearboxes, they will be working with Nooteboom six-axle semi-lowloader and table-top trailers. Speaking after the new Volvos had been in service for just three weeks, Baldwins transport manager Tony Wilson said: “They are joining a growing fleet and if they prove their worth, we will look at taking considerably more.” Ballast blocks are a vital part of mobile crane construction, balancing the structure – and the new Volvos will be operating at over 100 tonnes all the time.
Supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London, Hayes, the new FHs are on a four-year Volvo service contract and will be working from Baldwins’ Langley, Bucks operating centre to service contracts in and around the capital. Baldwins provides lifts of up to 1000 tonnes, yet fuel remains a key performance criteria. “With the high gross weights, ours is thirsty work – but I’m hoping for around 6 mpg from the new Volvos, which is very productive in relation to a 44-tonner,” Tony Wilson concluded.
ACTROS IS MALLINSON CHAMP SWEDES’ NEW NINES
M
ercedes-Benz has stated its New Actros is beating the fleet average fuel return by a full two miles per gallon for South Yorkshire haulier Ken Mallinson & Sons. The operator is running 10 New Actros 2545 tractor units, including two of Britain’s first ultra low-emission Euro 6 models. The trucks feature 2.5 m wide, flat-floored BigSpace cabs and are powered by 450 bhp engines, which drive the latest Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmissions. Mallinson’s business development manager, Ian Egan, said: “Within the first two weeks, one of the Euro 5 units came back with an average of 10.65 mpg, and the Euro 6s were recording 9.7-9.8 mpg. “We carry a lot of plastic products, so we’re not fully freighted all the time – but given our previous overall average of 8.4-8.6 mpg, these figures obviously made us sit up and take notice.” Based at Mallinson’s purpose-built site at Barugh Green, near Barnsley, the New Actros are on nationwide general haulage work. They pull 4.5 m high curtainsiders and a selection

Ken Mallinson & Sons is a longterm operator of Mercedes-Benz trucks and most of its vehicles wear three-pointed stars. “They’re tried and tested product,” Egan said. “We run Axor as well as Actros tractors and they’re the most reliable trucks we own. We also have an excellent
relationship with Northside and if we were to suffer any breakdowns, we know the cover from the rest of the dealer network is fantastic. “The New Actros builds on the excellent reputation of the previous model and is a superbly engineered vehicle, with a cab that’s certainly proving to be popular with our drivers,” he added. New Actros was launched on the eve of the CV Show in April and Ken Mallinson & Sons ordered its trucks during the NEC event, making it the first customer in the UK to commit to the Euro 6 model.
SWEDES’ NEW NINES
S
cania has unveiled more of its Euro 6 engine lineup at the IAA commercial vehicle exhibition. On display were four new nine-litre Euro 6 engines, two with SCR and two with EGR+SCR, as well as the two 13-litre engines introduced in 2011. The Swedish manufacturer said other Euro 6 engines will be introduced closer to the date when the new standard comes into effect (Euro 6 becomes mandatory on December 31, 2013). A selection of Scania’s Euro 6 inline engines was shown, ranging from the five-cylinder, 250 bhp powerplant to the sixcylinder, 480 bhp lump. The basis for all of Scania’s Euro 6 engines is the latest modularised 9-, 13- and 16-litre engine platform, providing benefits for customers in terms of easier servicing and parts supply.
THIRD-GEN TACHOS ARE GO
OSA has reminded road haulage operators that the EU Commission has introduced a number of changes to digital tachographs. These design changes are being implemented in two generations, more commonly referred to as second- and thirdgeneration digital tachographs. Second-generation tachographs were
implemented from October 1, 2011. Now, VOSA has warned that any tachograph activated from October 1, 2012 must be a third-generation tachograph and is required to have improved security features. However, VOSA points out there is no requirement to retrospectively apply this Regulation, so vehicles already fitted with first- or second-generation tachographs may continue to use these in the future.

SCR aftertreatment alone is used for the new 320 and 360 bhp nine-litre diesel engines, whereas the new 250 and 280 bhp engines have a combined EGR and SCR system, similar to that used on the 13-litre 440 and 480 bhp units. Customers therefore have a choice of SCR or EGR+SCR technology on the nine-litre range. Scania said the Euro 6 engines feature exceptionally high torque at low revs, which gives them excellent drivability and permits convenient cruising at low revs for maximum fuel economy. The same compact silencer unit is used for all inline engines, containing an oxicat, a particulate filter, twin SCR catalysts and twin urea slip catalysts. The entire package is just as compact as silencers for earlier emission standards, leaving space for up to 1500 litres of fuel on a tractor unit.

NEW TRAILERS ARE NO TURKEYS
B
ritish turkey farming company Bernard Matthews Farms is completing its transition to a 100 per cent Schmitz Cargobull refrigerated fleet with the arrival of eight new trailers from the manufacturer – four of which feature the company’s striking new ‘Lean on Turkey’ livery. The fully integrated turkey producer – which operates farms in Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire – said it has gradually converted its fleet to Schmitz Cargobull over the last seven years due to competitive
pricing and an ability for the trailers to stand up to the rigours of its demanding transport operations. “Our fleet is really put through its paces on a daily basis,” said Jeffrey Helmore, transport manager at Bernard Matthews. “This requires equipment which not only copes with our gruelling schedules, but has the longevity to perform as well on day one as it does two, three or even seven years down the line. “Regularly maintaining and servicing a fleet is all well and good, but if the initial product isn’t up to scratch in the first place, it means
PORTUGAL RUBBERS UP
E
uromaster Group is expanding its operations into a 16th European country – Portugal – with a network of 48 locations there to provide all-round service for UK trucks visiting the Continent. “Vehicle downtime can be the difference between a thriving international logistics business and a failing one,” said Peter Fairlie, group sales director at ATS Euromaster. “But British drivers can relax now, knowing they can depend on Euromaster at more than 2000 centres across Europe in the event they suffer an unexpected vehicle issue. “The moves Euromaster is making in Portugal mean the group is now delivering its customary value for money and customer service from the Atlantic Coast of Western Portugal to the Mezzogiorno in Southern Italy, and from the North Cape of Scandinavia to the Highlands of Scotland,” Fairlie added.
very little. With Schmitz Cargobull we get a good solid trailer, and that’s why we keep coming back for more,” he added. The eight new trailers – each equipped with Vector 1550 monotemperature refrigeration units from Carrier Transicold – join Bernard Matthews’ 33-strong reefer fleet and will be deployed between its production facilities in Norfolk and Suffolk, and its distribution centres to transport both fresh meat as well as frozen and chilled finished products. “A big gain for us is the Ferroplast
panelling unique to Schmitz Cargobull equipment. We’ve had experiences before with competitor products where the outer skin of a trailer has been pierced and water has seeped in,” Helmore said. “This has resulted in water soaking into the insulation and reducing the efficiency of the trailer – also leading to an increase in the trailer’s unladen weight. “We don’t get this problem with Schmitz Cargobull equipment, and that’s a big advantage to us as the integrity of the products we carry is critical.”
Schmitz Cargobull’s Ferroplast panels use high-quality expanded, closed cell, polyurethane foam housed between steel skins and make use of all the advantages steel can offer. The multiple-coated steel skin is impervious to vapour intrusion and remains as sealed as only metal can be – despite being ultra-thin. Unlike fibreglassreinforced plastic, steel doesn’t become brittle or develop cracks. Helmore said he anticipates the new trailers will remain on the Bernard Matthews fleet for the next seven years.
RDFL ENTERS STO BUSINESS
B
uilding products manufacturer Sto has developed a close partnership with transport specialist Rhys Davies Freight Logistics to deliver its high-quality rendering materials directly to construction sites across the UK. Products are collected daily from Sto’s warehouses in Glasgow and Basingstoke and transferred to RDFL’s regional depots for delivery the next day. RDFL’s expertise in transporting liquid products is one of the key reasons for Sto’s longstanding relationship with the company. “We pride ourselves on being an ethical company in everything we do,” said logistics manager Stephen Catterson. “Our slogan is ‘building with conscience’, and it’s very important the pails are delivered in a manner that matches that claim. The render is a paint-like product and although it’s not hazardous, it needs to be handled with great
care so it arrives on site in pristine condition. Spillages or damage of any kind are just not acceptable.” Last year, RDFL delivered around 14,500 pallets to 2600 locations in the UK for use

Forklift trailer fleet raises the bar
A
new fleet of 11 bespoke-built forklift trailers are being put into operation by Barloworld Handling and its logistics provider Canute Haulage. Each trailer is designed to offer the most flexible materials handling equipment delivery service for customers nationwide. Operating with brand-new Scania 6x2 mid-steer tractor units, the tri-axle stepframe trailers feature curtainside bodywork with sliding roofs and have been built by Hampshire-based Andover Trailers. The order includes nine 13.6 m trailers and two 10.9 m trailers, with the shorter units designed specifically for making deliveries within London and the South East. The new fleet represents investment of more than £1.2 million by Canute Haulage, with each trailer featuring a striking Barloworld Handling livery. It also marks a notable piece of repeat business for Andover – when the company was established in 1985, the first trailer it built was a forklift carrier for Barlow Handling. Michael French, group fleet engineer at Canute Group, said: “Every feature we’ve incorporated into these trailers has been selected to combine efficient deliveries for Barloworld with a swift and professional service to its customers. “The full height and full width power-toe ramps ensure a shallow loading angle, meaning we can accommodate even the lowest ground clearance warehouse equipment, while the sliding roof enables us to transport high-mast machines.” The TSE sliding roof is an allsteel system which was specifically chosen by Andover Trailers for its sheer strength and durability, which allows it to withstand buffeting
when travelling with the roof open. The roof has four locking positions giving Canute maximum flexibility for loading high-mast trucks, while keeping as much of the trailer dry for other machines. The trailers also feature swingout rear pillars to ensure Canute’s drivers aren’t restricted by the width of the door frame when loading larger machines. For maximum safety, a reversing camera is linked to an in-cab monitor to aid manoeuvring, while the ramps can be operated via
remote-control, allowing the driver to observe every stage of the lowering process. The trailers are built with a low-profile neck with ramps enabling forklifts to be loaded onto the upper deck. Closed steel crossmembers in the frame help to provide additional strength for concentrated loads, with machines secured via 14 pairs of lashing points. An electric winch is built into the bulkhead to aid with the loading and unloading process, while four storage compartments
have been added for the safe carriage of gas bottles – ideal when delivering fleets of gaspowered forklifts. The trailers feature BPW axles and air-suspension, with 360 mm brakes and 19.5-inch tyres for greater durability. Haldex brake gear was chosen to make the trailers compatible with other assets in the Canute fleet. “With an articulated fleet, if a tractor unit suffers a failure we can quickly despatch another truck to pick-up the trailer and continue
Isuzu goes West
C
ommercial vehicle distributor Isuzu Truck UK Limited has appointed Bristol-based AK Commercials as its latest parts and service dealer. Keith Child, marketing director at Isuzu Truck UK, said: “Ideally located close to the important M4/M5 corridor, AK Commercials is a significant addition to our presence here in the West Country. Complimenting our existing dealer arrangements, we are now in an even stronger position to further develop and maintain the Isuzu vehicle parc in this region.” AK Commercials employs 11 members of staff with full
workshop facilities, including mobile service/parts units and recovery support vehicles. Commenting on being appointed as an Isuzu truck parts and service dealer, Kevin Archer from AK Commercial said: “As a long-established company in the area, we were recommended to Isuzu by some of our customers. There is a healthy Isuzu vehicle parc in the area and we had positive feedback about the Isuzu product range. Already we have found there has been considerable interest in our services as a result of taking on the Isuzu marque, and we look forward to developing the Isuzu business over the next 12 months.”

deliveries,” French said. “The trailers also enable us to maximise the number of machines we can carry at a time, which reduces vehicle movements and is better for the environment.” The fleet is expected to cover more than 80,000 km a year operating from Barloworld Handling’s 17 regional support centres throughout the UK. Each trailer will be used for delivering and collecting contract machines, as well as supporting Barloworld’s short-term hire fleet.

INSURANCE
INSURANCE ADVICE Towergate Insurance has been providing insurance cover for owner-drivers up to the largest fleets for over 30 years. Q) Q All three of our trucks were recently subject to fuel theft, the fuel being siphoned out of their tanks overnight. The claim has been thrown out by our insurance company, on the grounds, they say, that fuel theft is not covered. There’s nothing in our policy saying this so we feel the claim should be paid. Our insurance company is refusing to budge. What advice can you offer?
A Fuel is an essential component of A) the truck and as such, unless there is a specific exclusion, a claim relating to fuel theft should be paid, less your policy excess and providing you can prove your loss. However, in pursuing this claim, bear in mind the fact that your insurer is likely to treat this incident as three separate claims meaning the standard policy excess will be applied to the theft claim relating to each of the three trucks. Keep in mind too that unless you have protected No Claims Discount on all three trucks, the fuel theft claims
could result in your NCD being stepped back, perhaps by two years, on all three vehicles. The policy excess issue coupled with the likely impact on NCD and hence premiums could mean it’s simply not worth you claiming. Ask your broker for advice.
Q We have a couple of fork lift Q) trucks. We’ve been advised that the sums insured on our fork-lifts should represent their replacement cost as new. Both trucks were bought second hand and if they were stolen or damaged beyond repair, we would go out and find similar second hand fork lifts. Can we legitimately insure them for their second-hand value? A Even though your property A) insurance policy covering your machinery, plant, fixtures and fittings and so on may be on a ‘reinstatement as new’ basis, it should be possible to have the policy endorsed to the effect that fork-lift trucks or, to use a more generic term if appropriate, mobile
plant, are insured on an indemnity basis. The sums insured in respect of such items can then be based on their current market value and if you have a loss such as a fire, then it’s a payment representing the second-hand value that you can expect to receive. The important thing to remember with insuring on an indemnity basis equipment on which you rely and that would need to be replaced if destroyed is that there does need to be a viable second-hand marketplace that enables you to quickly go out and buy a second-hand replacement.
Q We use quite a lot of agency Q) drivers to give us the flexibility our business needs. As a result, our claims experience is quite significantly affected by claims involving those agency drivers. Is there any way I can hold the recruitment agency responsible for damage caused to my trucks by the negligent acts of drivers that they supply? A Some driver recruitment agencies A) arrange driver negligence insurance to protect themselves against claims for accidental damage to trucks caused by the negligent acts of drivers they supply to firms that make the agency contractually responsible for such damage. More information is available on the internet. Q) Q We’ve recently signed a new contract for the delivery of laptop computers. We’re thinking about
improving our vehicle security by using telematics to track our vehicles. There are many companies claiming that their system can help us achieve that goal. Is telematics the way to go?
A Arguably telematics should A) be viewed first and foremost as a management tool to help increase the operational efficiency of a fleet. Some systems do bring a degree of benefit from a security perspective but in the event of an armed hi-jack or similar, telematics in isolation may prove to be of little real or immediate benefit. Our advice is to get the basics right first and perhaps view telematics as the icing on the cake. Getting the basics right includes making sure your entire operational processes have been designed with security in mind, that your premises and vehicles are secure and that your drivers have been appropriately trained in procedures to minimize the risk of theft and hi-jacking. Just as importantly, take steps to ensure that every member of your team can be trusted and relied upon - just one weak link in the office, warehouse or behind the wheel of a truck is all it takes to undermine the integrity of your entire operation.
results in damage to one of our trucks and the cost of fixing it is likely to be less than £1,000 or so, we are increasingly tending to get the damage repaired ourselves without involving our insurer. That being the case, we feel we might as well up our policy excess to £1,000. How should be arrive at an objective decision as regards upping our excess?
A Ask your broker or insurer to A) analyse all the claims that have been channeled through your insurance company over, say, the past three years and to work out how much more you would have had to pay out of your own pocket had there been a £1,000 rather than a £250 excess. They can then turn that figure into an average annual amount, project upwards to allow for inflation, and then compare that with the amount by which your annual premium will reduce if you up the excess in the manner suggested. Before taking a decision though, keep in mind that if three or four vehicles were involved in the same incident – for example if a fire spread from one truck to others whilst parked in your yard – that each damaged vehicle will represent a separate claim and that the policy excess will Q We currently have a £250 Q) excess under our motor fleet policy. consequently be applied to the damage relating to each individual vehicle. However, if we have a crash that If you have an insurance question, please contact our panel of experts on
