A

n act of heroism by an agency truck driver during the dark days of March, when blizzards swept across Kent and Sussex, has come to light recently thanks to an anonymous phone call to the transport office at the DHL Sainsbury’s depot in Dartford.

Mark Riches, who drives for Milestone, put his ample driving experience and desire to help out fellow motorists to into action when his truck became stuck while attempting to reach Sainsbury’s in Sevenoaks with a food and drink delivery.

Mark, who was on the 5:30 pm shift, said: “I have never seen such terrible conditions in 17 years of driving LGVs. Snow was sweeping in across the A21, visibility was very low and I slowed down to a crawl, to

avoid risks such as jack-knifing.

“After making slow progress, then waiting two hours in a queue to inch past a broken-down petrol tanker on the other side of the road, which oncoming cars were being directed around by local people braving the weather, I eventually reached the roundabout at about 8:30 pm, which should have been the home straight.”

Mark thought the slight hill after the right turn off the Riverhead roundabout could present a problem, and he was not wrong – despite it being the kind of day when even rivals would collaborate to get a job done.

“A friendly Tesco lorry driver had got into difficulties and had already pulled over,” Mark said. “He offered to let me attempt the hill by stopping traffic behind me at the bottom, so

Games steps to go permanent?

A

package of measures put in place by the logistics sector for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games could, if adopted permanently, improve safety levels for cyclists and other vulnerable users – as well as bring environmental benefits.

These are the findings of a major new in-depth analysis of the performance of the logistics sector during the Games, undertaken by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), DHL and the University of Westminster.

The study established the planned programme of measures for road deliveries adopted during the London Games last year – which included more night-time deliveries, consolidation of loads onto fewer vehicles, and much improved levels of communications between local authorities, operators, customers and employees – generated positive outcomes that could improve road safety for cyclists and deliver a ‘hat-trick’ of environmental benefits in London, and anywhere else that adopts them.

These are: fewer CO2 emissions, less traffic congestion, and reduced fuel consumption.

The Report highlights Transport for London data showing the number of lorries over 3.5 tonnes in the morning traffic peak (8.30 am) during the Games fell almost 15 per cent compared to a summer’s day in 2011. Smarter working achieved an overall reduction in the number of freight vehicles during the Games period, achieved by making more deliveries during the evening and overnight.

deliveries by day, thereby improving the safety of cyclists for whom such vehicles can be an added safety hazard.

It also led to a reduction in fuel consumption of between 3-6 per cent, and reductions in lorry/van driver hours of up to 20 per cent.

Fewer goods vehicles on the road by day also indirectly benefitted bus services that were able to move more freely.

With goods vehicles accounting for a sixth of the total distance travelled on London’s roads and over 50 per cent of all cyclist fatalities resulting from collisions with trucks, the report also said improved communications between local authorities, event managers, logistics operators and customers were a leading feature of the smooth operation of the London Games.

CILT CEO, Steve Agg, said: “For freight and passenger transport, the London Games proved a major success. Goods and services were retained at highly efficient levels, and people were able to move London’s streets more quickly and easily. We must now take advantage of this ‘London 2012 effect’ and put some of the lessons learned into practice on a permanent basis for the sake of all road users, especially for cyclists and pedestrians, to make the capital city a more pleasant place to live and work.”

He added: “Freight delivery and logistics operations were made more efficient in London but these methods and approaches could easily be adopted by other cities in the UK, especially those undertaking similar events such as the 2014 Commonwealth Games.”

It was now around 9:30 pm, and Mark had to update the store from his cab. While he was doing this, he noticed the camber on the road meant a car was gradually slipping towards a line of parked cars on the kerb as it moved forward. Grabbing his hi-vis vest and jumping out, he instructed the elderly driver to stop and helped push his car back on track and away from danger.

It was the first of several such efforts Mark made wearing only his usual fleece and T-shirt under the hi-vis vest in the freezing cold, but he thinks the first grateful couple in the car were the ones to contact the depot.

A few days later, they left a thankful message with Sainsbury’s, which ended: “Even in his hour of need, he was a bit of a hero to others. Thank you, Mr Sainsbury’s lorry driver, whoever you are.”

Luckily, around 12 am Mark spotted a gritter lorry coming down the hill in the other direction and asked the driver if he would grit Mark’s side of the hill. He did, and on the third re-attempt (with more help from the Tesco driver, for whom Mark had returned the favour), Mark succeeded in climbing the hill and reaching the Sainsbury’s store.

In total, the usual 40-minute journey had taken more than five hours.

Mark was characteristically modest about his efforts: “It wasn’t just me. What was special about that

day was everyone pulled together, from the local people near the tanker to the other LGV driver on the hill.

The camaraderie was enormous.”

His advice for other drivers is to be prepared for the unexpected, and do consider doing first aid training in case the worst happens.

The story has a happy ending.

olvo Trucks has revealed the new Volvo FMX at the Bauma show in Munich, Germany.

The Swedish manufacturer said the new FMX is easier to drive and boasts several innovations to boost its efficiency and off-road capability for models with a single steered front axle.

Volvo said the driver can steer a heavily loaded truck without the slightest effort thanks to new Volvo Dynamic Steering technology. “The patented Volvo Dynamic Steering system benefits all drivers, but its advantages are most noticeable when driving at low speeds. The effortless steering makes the construction truck driver’s job far easier,” said Claes Nilsson, president of Volvo Trucks.

The new FMX features an electronically controlled electric motor attached to the steering gear, which works together with the hydraulic power steering and is regulated thousands of times per second by its electronic control unit. Another benefit is that Volvo Dynamic Steering self-centres automatically when reversing.

“At low speeds, the electric motor replaces the driver’s muscle-power.

Instead, the driver can relax and steer without any effort and strain,” said Gustav Neander, project manager for Volvo Dynamic Steering.

A new suspension system features automatic ride-height control and offers 300 mm of ground clearance. The new off-road air suspension is available in both 4x2 and 6x4 configuration, but with the 8x4 axle configuration on both the traditional twin front axle set-up and the new Tridem design.

The vehicle offers improved stability as the anti-roll bar is now positioned in the centre of the bogie.

At the same time, there are no unprotected suspension components behind the truck’s last axle, so making it a good fit for tipping into asphalt pavers.

To create a tighter turning circle and reduced tyre wear, it is possible to specify the 8x4 configuration with tridem bogie with a hydraulically steered tag axle. The tag axle can also be lifted or dumped for increased drive axle traction in difficult operating conditions, as well as reducing tyre wear when running unladen.

On each trip, the mpg figure achieved was recorded and at the end of the day the winner was Craig Stewart, logistics manager at Widnes-based Ray Stewart Haulage, who averaged an impressive 11.4 mpg in the 510 bhp V8-powered Actros 2551, and 11.8 mpg in the 450 bhp Actros 2545 model. Between journeys, guests also enjoyed ‘hot laps’ of the Oulton Park circuit in two-seater racing cars piloted by professional drivers.

P&H MOVES FLEET FORWARD

ew nationwide van sales food service operation P&H Direct has rolled out its service with a fleet comprising 50 Isuzu Forward N75.150 7.5-tonne rigid vehicles. The trucks were specifically purchased for the brand new initiative, and all are specified with purpose-designed Paneltex bodywork.

P&H Direct is a new van sales operation set up by Palmer and Harvey to service retail food outlets such as cafes, snack bars, garden centres, sandwich shops and pubs – and the move into food service is a first for the wholesaler.

The latest 7.5-tonne Isuzus all feature Isuzu’s Easyshift transmission, and each truck has an extra-long Paneltex Ecofont S dry-freight body which has an interior length of 6100 mm. While the dry-freight body is principally designed for ambient products, there is a provision for chilled products through the supply of a mobile refrigeration unit within each truck.

According to P&H Direct, the new Isuzus will each have a working life of seven years, covering approximately 20,000 miles per annum operating as sales vans working on a localised geographical area.

TC SLAMS STANDARDS

he traffic commissioner for London and the South East has called on the construction and building industry to improve HGV licence standards after six different operators appeared at public inquiry in one month.

Nicholas Denton, the region’s independent regulator, issued the reminder about vehicle maintenance and driver safety standards following investigations by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). Four of out of the six businesses faced regulatory action as a result of the inspections.

Romford-based Five Oaks Scaffolding Ltd will be suspended from operating for seven days in May, while Active Plant Hire Ltd, Lakha Scaffolding Ltd and A Whalebone Building Supplies Ltd all had their licences reduced.

Reports submitted by the enforcement body revealed a number of shortcomings in vehicle safety standards.

Three of the firms had issues with the forward planning of safety checks and all had unsatisfactory driver defect reporting in place. In one instance, drivers were not even carrying out the required checks.

The TC also heard MoT pass rates were below the national average, with two of the operators recording multiple failures on the same vehicle. Prohibitions – including the issue of significant notices for loose wheel nuts and tyre defects – were a common problem, with one operator having attracted seven in five years on an eight-vehicle fleet.

In addition, Mr Denton found two of the businesses had received previous warnings about operator licence compliance, the most recent being in March 2012.

The TC also noted VOSA examiners had reported on the lack of involvement of

company directors in the compliance regime for more than one of the firms.

“A lack of understanding by the directors or owners of how the transport side of their business operates can have significant consequences, as these cases have shown,” Denton said. “When applying for a licence, it is the company director or owner who signs the application form. That means they sign up to the licence responsibilities – to ensure driver’s hours rules are observed, to keep vehicles fit and serviceable, to make sure drivers report defects promptly and to keep maintenance and repair records.

“It is not acceptable for a director or owner to delegate control over these functions to someone else and then simply assume everything is being done properly, without ever checking this is so. This does appear to be a particular risk in businesses whose primary purpose is something other than transport.

“In the construction sector, operating large vehicles is a necessary consequence of the main activity, whether that is erecting scaffolding, selling building supplies or hiring plant machinery. But they are still heavy goods vehicles. The need to carry out safety checks still applies. The minimum standards must be in place.

“I am constantly amazed by the fact that people in the construction industry who are very careful about adhering to health and safety standards when on construction sites or up on scaffolding, seem to throw all that care out of the window the instant they leave the site. They leap into a goods vehicle and drive off without bothering to check properly for defects. Operating the goods vehicle should be treated with the same reverence towards safety as is given to work on the building site.”

A spokesperson from Potholes. co.uk said the website has experienced a record number of visitors in the first four months of this year, as Britain’s ‘Pothole Season’ took its toll on the nation’s vehicles.

“Over the years, we have found many Potholes.co.uk users report damage to the vehicles caused by stretches of road which have been dug up and repaired poorly.

“We’ve always campaigned for the ‘patch and mend’ mentality to be scrapped and for better funding to be made available to local authorities so they can do the job properly in the first place.

“However, we won’t be holding our breath that the taskforce will magically improve Britain’s roads – our infrastructure needs greater investment across the board, and this is just one small step in achieving that.”

NEW ACTROS POTTER ON

ulti-modal transport solutions specialist Potter Logistics conducted a detailed, head-to-head comparison between its established fleet supplier’s main contender and a New Actros from Mercedes-Benz, before coming down firmly in favour of the truck with a three-pointed star.

As a result, the national operator is now running 10 New Actros 2545 tractor units with fuel-efficient 450 bhp engines and aerodynamic StreamSpace cabs, all of which arrived via York dealer Northside Truck & Van. Potter needed new vehicles after taking over the business of York haulier House of James Transport. Nick Brightey, general manager at Potter Logistics’ transport division and York distribution centre, said: “Our own policy is to renew trucks every five years, but those on the House of James fleet were a good deal older than this. So we immediately began the process of replacing the vehicles we inherited.

“Most of those trucks were by MercedesBenz and highly thought of. So we decided to evaluate the brand’s latest product, the New Actros, against a tractor unit from another supplier.”

The New Actros quickly moved into pole position after scoring very highly across the board. “Equally important, though,” said Brightey, “was the reassurance that Mercedes-Benz and Northside Truck & Van conveyed. For many years now, Truckersworld, the RHA and FTA have been campaigning for far better secure overnight parking facilities in the UK for driver safety and welfare. Following meetings with the DfT where we have presented proposals and solutions to this problem, the Lorry Parking Strategy was introduced – but now seems to have come to a stop, just like many other words of wisdom on the subject, but as yet no actual action has been introduced.

As this levy on foreign vehicles entering the UK is to produce extra income, and on a whole from trucks, then has any consideration been put forward to improving the facilities for the truckers in the UK using this extra income?

I believe many ministers recognise the shortfall in facilities on offer in the UK. More and more we are told it is unsafe to park here or there, but where do we go?

Industrial estates are introducing more double yellow lines to stop overnight parking without any consideration of where drivers go to park up safely.

May I respectfully request you make full consideration of putting this extra income to good use in possible offering grants to town councils to open up the many park & rides as secure overnight parking, a simple solution which will provide safety for drivers and easily policed. When new planning applications are received for new developments, they must provide within the plans suitable provisions.

Possibly in major road development consider better of road lay-by facilities with toilets.

What has happened to the much talked about Lorry Parking Strategy? Is it still in the back burner along with other talk or improvements?

We as professional drivers in the UK deserve to be treated better by this UK government. We are limited by law and legislation, and yet very few town or city councils offer decent facilities for the trucks that keep their economy moving and the drivers who need proper rest and consideration for their safety.

The time is right for action, and not just words of wisdom.

This letter will be produced on my forum for the observation of my many members and other drivers, and I will with pleasure post any such reply I receive from you or your ministers.

Us truck nuts always like to compete for a photograph of a truck with the new reg. As 13 reg took effect on March 1, I was out on the A14 at the beginning of the month to try my luck… and bingo – I was lucky enough to grab a shot of this DAF CF with the new reg. Thirteen going on 14, you might say!

The A14 is the now best photographic spot in East Anglia since the M1 north of Junction 10 has been totally ruined for us truck photographers – there’s no hard shoulder at Toddington Services, and a concrete barrier has been built that effectively obscures the lower part of passing trucks. I sometimes wonder if the Highways Department has it in for us truck enthusiasts.

Suspect showers?

I refer to your article about Moto services starting to charge for showers (Truckstop News, May). It may be worth running a poll on what drivers think about this.

Most drivers I have spoken to say the showers are not worth this – the showers are very small and poorly maintained.

Moto had a turnover of £786 million pounds along with a profits of £52 million pounds, so this charge seems very unfair. It makes you wonder if Tim Moss, the chief executive of Moto, would use these poor facilities? You would imagine his office is equipped with an ensuite so he could wash after his hard day in his executive office, waited on hand and foot.

nfortunately, many businesses involved in the personal injury arena regard an accident claim as a commodity to be traded. Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention.

A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call.

In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”.

The subject of load security is one that is always of concern. Below is a look at some of the issues involved from a legal perspective regarding the offence which can occur under the Road Traffic Act, and a look at some of the issues which have been identified as being necessary to consider in order to operate safe procedures.

The legal position of load security is that under section 40A of the Road Traffic Act 1988, a person is guilty of an offence if they use a vehicle, or cause or permit another to use a vehicle, on the road when (1) the condition of the vehicle/trailer, (2) the purpose for which it is being used and (3) the weight, position or distribution of its load, or the manner in which it is secured, is such that the use of the vehicle or trailer involves a danger of injury to another person.

olvo Trucks has launched an app for the Worldtrucker online community, which enables truck drivers to connect and share experiences from life on the roads.

First to trial the app is celebrity truck driver Lisa Kelly from the TV series Ice Road Truckers – and who is already a Worldtrucker member.

The Worldtrucker app for iPhone and Android is designed to make it easier for the more than 20,000 members of the Worldtrucker community (www. worldtrucker.com) to exchange experiences and expertise with other truck drivers, both in their local community and around the world.

EU shakes up ‘dangerous’ design

T

he European Commission has stated EU rule changes allowing longer and rounder truck cabs could cut accidents involving ‘vulnerable’ road users as well as saving up to 10 per cent of fuel use and cutting emissions by 7-10 per cent.

The new proposals from Brussels will tackle the current problem of HGV designers squeezing cab size to capitalise on load space. If approved by MEPs and EU transport ministers, they would be able to alter dramatically the current ‘brick’-shaped cab which rules out rounder, more streamlined front sections. Aerodymanic flaps could also be fitted at the back of the trailer without breaching maximum length requirements.

The existing EU directive restricting heavy goods vehicle weight to 44 tonnes maximum will not change, but the current maximum length of 18.75 m (61.5 ft) will be increased as long as the increase is in the cab section and improves safety and aerodynamic efficiency.

Coming a week after a cyclist was killed in a collision with a lorry during the rush hour in central London, the proposals were welcomed

by London’s transport commissioner as well as the European Federation of Road Traffic Victims (FEVR) and Transport & Environment (T&E) campaigning groups.

The new plan would free up designers to develop deeper cabin skirts as part of a round, deflecting nose shape and extended crumple zone. The bigger cabs would also improve driver vision.

The Commission acknowledged that current, 30-year-old rules on truck weights and dimensions did not have energy efficiency or other environmental objectives in mind.

And on safety, a Commission statement said: “In practice, the current rules now actually prevent the introduction of innovative designs - such as more rounded cabins – which are essential to increase fuel efficiency and safety.”

RACING RENAULTS GET IN GEAR

T

he start of the new FIA European Truck Racing Championship is fast approaching, and the Renault TrucksMKR Technology team – European Champions in 2012 – is preparing to defend their title.

After having worked all winter long on the racing trucks, the team is counting on its two drivers, Adam Lacko and Markus Bösiger, to challenge at the front of the pack during the 10 races in the 2013 season.

The 2013 FIA European Truck Racing Championship season will be the seventh year that Renault Trucks has been involved in the competition. After two European Team Championship wins with MKR-Technology in 2010 and 2012, the manufacturer and its partner are now preparing to defend their crown. To achieve this, the team has decided to field two trucks, which will be driven by Czech driver Adam Lacko and Swiss driver Markus Bösiger.

Engineers and mechanics have been working throughout the winter to improve the chassis and the engine on the new trucks. “We have optimised the useful range of our DXi 13 racing engine and carried out significant work on the camshaft, injection and electronic controls which will further improve our performance, particularly with regard to pick up at low engine speeds,” said Gérard Pétraz, Renault Trucks Racing technical director.

“We have also reduced the engine’s internal friction, which improves its overall yield, by applying solutions used in the Euro 6 engines equipping the new Renault Trucks range.”

Driver Adam Lacko added: “I think we’re going to give our rivals a very tough time this year and that it will be crowned with success for the team and for me.”

Iveco is back for the fourth year running as commercial vehicle supplier to the MotoGP, renewing its partnership with the premier international motorcycle racing world championship. The Italian manufacturer has also renewed its sponsorship of the 2013 Yamaha Factory Racing Team. The championship will conclude on November 10 in Valencia, Spain. Skilled riders will compete in the 18-race series which takes place across 13 countries, on four continents.

ACCAR subsidiary Kenworth has launched the new Kenworth T880 vocational truck at the annual Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky. “The new Kenworth T880 builds upon Kenworth’s heritage of quality, innovation and technology to produce industryleading, rugged and reliable vocational trucks,” said Gary Moore, PACCAR vice president and Kenworth general manager. The T880 has a 2.1m wide, stamped aluminum cab that provides improved interior workspace, complemented by a panoramic windshield. A 12.9-liter PACCAR MX-13 engine is fitted as standard, offered with a new high-end rating of 500 bhp and 1850 lbf.ft of torque. The new Kenworth T880 is designed for vocational applications including dump, mixer, refuse and heavy haulage.

Volvo launches new FL & FE

V

olvo has launched new versions of its FL and FE trucks which the Swedish manufacturer said are now even easier to drive in city conditions where the demand is for fast, smooth and clean transport.

The new trucks feature an enhanced driver environment, and the Volvo FL range is now extended with a very competitive four-cylinder, five-litre engine.

“Drivers often climb into and out of their trucks many times on each shift. That’s why we’ve focused on creating a comfortable, convenient driver’s environment with good visibility in every direction,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Trucks.

The driver’s working conditions have been improved with clearer instrumentation and new ergonomic seats featuring an integrated headrest and safety belt. A reinforced seat and seat anchoring in the floor help improve safety in the event of an accident.

Two new, in-house designed five- and eightlitre engines are offered. The new six-cylinder

D8 engine has a displacement of 7.7 litres and is available with a choice of three power outputs: 320 bhp (1200 Nm), 280 bhp (1050 Nm) and 250 bhp (950 Nm). The Volvo FL is also available with the compact four-cylinder D5 engine, which has a displacement of 5.1 litres and comes with power outputs of 240 bhp (900 Nm) and 210 bhp (800 Nm).

“With their swift torque delivery at low revs, both engines are ideal for quick, comfortable and safe driving in cities and suburbs. Their easy driveability helps drivers keep up with tight work schedules and multiple transport assignments,” said Ruddy Houtmeyers, strategic product manager for medium duty vehicles, Volvo Trucks.

“These engines meet the new Euro 6 emission requirements and their fuel consumption is on a par with our Euro 5 engines. The technological solution for meeting the Euro 6 demands is a combination of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and variable turbo geometry, a cooled EGR system and a particulate filter.”

A comprehensive range of transmissions complements the two new engines. Among the various options, it is now possible to equip the Volvo FE with the I-Shift automated gearbox.

Another welcome new feature for drivers is ESP (Electronic Stability Program) is now fitted as standard to both the Volvo FL and the Volvo FE. ESP helps the driver keep the truck on the road if it swerves unexpectedly or severely.

Volvo has also designed a new 12-tonne version of the Volvo FL, which has the most powerful engine in its segment (four-cylinder

D5 with 240 bhp), specially optimised I-Sync transmission and weighs 500 kg less than a corresponding truck with a six-cylinder engine.

“The new 12-tonner is a sharp contender in the largest European medium-duty segment. The truck is lighter, lower and more competitively priced than the current model. It increases customer productivity and efficiency at the same time as it offers the driver better working conditions,” Bergman said.

“The truck is well-thought-out in every detail.

For instance, take the smaller wheels, which lower the cab by 5 cm. This gives the driver better all-round visibility and makes it easier to get in and out of the cab,” Bergman added.

Crash claims beggar belief

C

ar-drivers putting on make-up, changing CDs and arguing with their passengers have all contributed to traffic accidents, according to recent insurance claims.

In a statement released by UK insurance comparison website InsureAnts.co.uk, one driver was involved in an accident after claiming they saw an unnamed celebrity walking along the street (the ‘celebrity’ turned out to be a normal member of the public).

But despite the humorous nature of the claims, many of these accidents betray a shocking ignorance of the Highway Code and basic driving skills.

“We never cease to be amazed by some claims,” said Paul Gilbert, customer services director of InsureAnts.co.uk price comparison website. “It’s almost as if some people pass their driving test and immediately forget the basic rules of the road.”

According to the insurance firm, some of the most bizarre recent claims included: ■ “I was practising what I’d do in the event of a car crash, and crashed.”

■ “The other driver said he was too busy looking at the map to notice he had gone the wrong way on a one-way street.”

■ “I was trying to swat a fly with the ice scraper and didn’t see the other car.”

■ “The other driver said they had just driven off the ferry after a week in France, and forgot to drive on the left.”

■ “I saw somebody getting undressed in their front window, and crashed through their wall.”

BACK DOOR WIN FOR CANCER CHARITY

T

he Road Haulage Association for Scotland and Northern Ireland is backing a campaign to drive down deaths from bowel cancer.

The RHA met with Bowel Cancer UK to support the Scottish government’s Detect Cancer Early campaign, as it targets truck drivers and motorists to raise awareness of bowel cancer.

Almost 4000 Scots are diagnosed with the third biggest cancer in Scotland, yet only half of those eligible for the national screening programme actually take the test.

Nine out of 10 people survive the disease if it’s detected and treated early, and screening is the best way to spot the early hidden signs of bowel cancer.

Long-haul drivers, truckers and those who drive as part of their job and are over 50 will be urged to take the test, as trucks from ARR Craib Transport Ltd will travel the country sporting the new advertising campaign on their back doors. This is the next phase of the Detect Cancer Early campaign.

Phil Flanders, director of the RHA for Scotland and Northern Ireland, said: “We know the importance safety and the health of drivers play in continuing to keep truckers on the road. Bowel cancer can be a devastating disease and can affect many in the driving and road transport industry, and this organisation will encourage drivers and truckers who are eligible for the screening programme to take the test.

Drive down bowel cancer by taking the test. If anything, it gives you peace of mind and you can sleep a bit easier at night.”

Emma Anderson, head of operations at Bowel Cancer UK, said: “There are so many factors that can put people at risk of bowel cancer, including leading inactive lifestyles and having a poor diet. But it can also just happen. Bowel cancer is very treatable, especially if diagnosed at an early stage. The best way to spot the signs of bowel cancer, which are often hidden, is to do the screening test.

“This is why it is so important that if anyone receives a screening kit, they use it and return it. Bowel cancer

screening really does save lives.”

Mike Simpson, commercial director at ARR Craib Transport Ltd, said: “ARR Craib is delighted to support this campaign. We understand the devastating effect that bowel cancer can have on patients and their families throughout Scotland, so we’re very keen to play a part in promoting participation in the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. We employ over 300 drivers, many falling into the 50+ age group, and we’re encouraging them to participate. If we can encourage others to do the same, that’s great.”

People in Scotland aged 50-74 are eligible to participate in the Scottish National Bowel Screening Programme and are sent a kit every two years.

eominster-based Thomas Panels & Profiles has won £20,000 worth of diesel fuel in MAN Truck & Bus UK’s Free Fuel promotion. The draw was made on day two of the CV Show at the NEC, Birmingham, after additional prizes of £5000 and £1000 were also awarded earlier at the three-day show.

A surprised transport planner, Paul Thomas, received the news via a phone call from the MAN Show Stand directly from MAN’s CEO in the UK, Des Evans.

“I just couldn‘t believe it,” said Thomas.

“Des told me we had won, but I had to call him back a little later to check it was all for real. My boss, Richard Thomas, and I were invited to the CV Show the next day as guests of MAN, and it was a brilliant experience. For a company with a small truck fleet, £20,000 is a significant sum – fuel is the largest single running cost for us.”

MAN’s Free Fuel promotion was open to any truck operator who visited the company’s

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) website (www.man-tco.co.uk) to register their interest.

Alongside the top prize of £20,000 of free fuel, MAN offered a second prize of £5000 of fuel and five third prizes of £1000 of fuel each.

“The objective,” said Sandy Millar, sales director of MAN Truck & Bus in the UK, “was to try and bring home to people just what they are missing if they don’t have MAN trucks in their fleet. We know from independent tests and hands-on experience with operators taking our trucks and driver training for the first time just how much people can save – up to 15-20 per cent in many cases.

“By simply logging on to our TCO website, operators can do a quick calculation for themselves on what it might mean to them in their own fleets. The online calculator is very simple to use and does give a very real example of what could be possible with a switch to the economy and efficiency of MAN trucks.”

TGS helps cut fuel spend SB Waste went for new TGL eight-legger due to impressive fuel economy

T

rials with a day-cabbed MAN TGS 32.400 eight-wheel tipper have delivered sufficiently convincing fuel economy for SB Waste Management & Recycling to add the truck to its 32-strong fleet.

Until now, the leading Wolverhampton-based operator has had a fleet made up largely of DAF, Scania and Volvo with a variety of hookloaders, tippers and a couple of artics with walking-floor trailers.

SB Waste’s transport manager, Martyn Whiley, said: “When we took the demo truck from MAN, I put one of my most experienced tipper drivers, Richard Logan, on it because we really wanted to know what it was all about.

When we’re working in town, there’s an awful lot of stop/start motoring and that burns fuel – and, like anyone else, fuel is the biggest single cost we have.

“So we’ve spec’d the new truck using

MAN TipMatic automated transmission with its special on/off road software, and that’s making sure we get the right torque at the right revs at the right time for maximum fuel efficiency. It’s a major consideration for us, and to date has been very impressive.”

The waste industry in the Wolverhampton area has been buoyant for some time, but SB’s general manager, Mark Cox, notes the economy has caused even this sector to slow down. However, the company has been able to protect itself against the worst ravages of the downturn, as it is also involved in processing the waste as well as simply collecting and transporting it.

SB Waste Management & Recycling has taken a full MAN R&M package on its new vehicle, which will be supported locally by MAN network member Aquila Truck Centres from its Tipton location.

HGV driver skippers yacht for global race

T

r uck driver Richard Gould, 26, from Swindon, has been selected as one of 12 elite skippers who will each lead a team in this year’s Clipper 13-14 Round the World Yacht Race.

Richard will be the only professional sailor on board one of a matched fleet of 12 brand-new, stripped down 70 ft ocean racing yachts, and will command a non-professional crew as they compete in the gruelling 40,000-mile race around the globe. The team with the highest total points at the finish wins the Clipper Race Trophy.

Richard holds a Class 2 licence and has been in haulage since 2009, traversing the UK in a range of vehicles from bin tippers to refrigerated trucks. Swapping the wheel of a truck for the helm of a Clipper 70 to lead a diverse team from different backgrounds, nationalities and with a range of sailing experience is no mean feat, but it is this challenge that appeals to him the most.

Richard had planned to take his Class 1 test this year, but upon being accepted onto the Clipper Race, has postponed it until his return in 11 months’ time.

“Sailing round the world is a big challenge

and I’m proud to have been chosen as a skipper for the Clipper Race,” Richard said.

Richard was first introduced to the sport when he was taken dinghy sailing by his father, and it didn’t take long before he decided to turn his new-found hobby into a vocation, training and working abroad as a water sports instructor.

The unique Clipper Race is now in its 17th year and was first established by legendary yachtsman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston who, in 1969, became the first man to sail solo and non-stop around the world.

It’s the only event where people from all walks of life, regardless of previous sailing experience, background or nationality can step outside of their comfort zone and do something truly extraordinary by taking on nature and racing around the world under sail.

There are currently two amateur crew who are swapping their day-to-day lives working as HGV drivers to take part in the race this year, and having no previous sailing experience before they signed up, the race will test their physical and mental endurance levels like few other sporting challenges can.

o impressed was Spire Healthcare with its first batch of Mercedes-Benz Atego 7.5-tonners that when the time finally came to replace them after nearly eight years of service, it opted to do so with a like-for-like fleet bearing the three-pointed star.

However, before taking the plunge, the leading private hospital operator had undertaken a comprehensive evaluation process which entailed trialling demonstration vehicles and receiving tenders from several other manufacturers.

“The criteria on which our acquisition decision was based included price, R&M service, vehicle performance and account management,” said Gill Kite, Spire Healthcare’s senior buyer – indirect.

“The respondents were scored and Mercedes-Benz came out on top in all areas. We also invited our drivers to test and comment on the various demonstrators and their feedback was also factored in – the Mercedes was definitely the drivers’ choice.”

The seven Atego 816s are based at Spire Healthcare’s National Distribution Centre in Droitwich, Worcestershire.

Supplied by Kidderminster dealer Rygor Commercials, they are the subject of a CharterWay contract hire agreement with Mercedes-Benz Financial Services, under which each will cover 115,000 miles a year.

The trucks are powered by 150 bhp, 4.25-litre engines. Like all Atego models with manual transmissions, they also came fitted as standard with the MSS (Motor Stop Start) system. This further boosts economy and cuts emissions, simply by switching off the engine whenever the vehicle is in neutral and stationary for three seconds – for example, in heavy traffic or at lights – then switching it back on again automatically as soon as the driver depresses the clutch.

The trucks’ box bodies are by Fred Smith & Son of West Bromwich, which also fitted their Dhollandia 1000 kg tail-lifts with ‘autoerect’ side gates and applied the operator’s eye-catching liveries.

INDUSTRY HITS OUT AT DCPC CHANGES

T

he Freight Transport Association (FTA) and Road Haulage Association (RHA) have joined forces in voicing their deep concern at the recent advice issued by the Department for Transport (DfT) regarding garage technicians and mechanics driving heavy goods vehicles to statutory annual tests being considered in-scope of the Driver CPC Directive (2003/59/EC).

In a joint letter to the parliamentary under secretary of state for transport, Stephen Hammond MP, the associations raised the point that according to industry estimates, there are more than 30,000 technicians in the UK, and added that although they were aware a few companies have taken the decision to include these employees in their DCPC training programmes, they believed the vast majority have not.

The FTA and RHA added that for all of them to achieve full compliance for their staff in just over one year would be a massive and costly task, and one they believe will deliver relatively little benefit to the freight industry.

Within their correspondence, FTA and RHA called on the minister to consider their points, and requested the opportunity to discuss the matter with him in further detail.

aking place over the May Bank Holiday weekend, this year’s Truckfest at the East of England Showground managed to grab the best of the season’s changeable weather and offer show-goers a superb assortment of gleaming commercial vehicles from home and abroad.

Truck manufacturers were also showing their support of the event, with stands from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, DAF, Scania and Iveco drawing much attention from visitors eager to set eyes on the latest Euro 6 vehicles.

Renault Trucks was also in attendance with a glistening variety of current models, but with the release of its complete new range taking place in June, we’ll have to

wait a little longer to before we see its new chassis.

Picking up the big prize this year for Best Kept Working Truck was John Templeton for his Avatar-themed Scania, which also took the gong for Best Kept Owner Driver Working Truck, Best Mural & Paintwork and Best Custom Truck.

Elsewhere, Richardsons Transport won the Best New Truck prize for its jet-black Scania R500 V8, and FG Bond took home the award for Best Kept Rigid/Tipper and came second place in the Best Fleet category, as SE Broscombe took the main award here.

Q We recently had a truck that was only nine months old written off. Our insurer offered us the market value of the vehicle at the time it was damaged, an amount that was a lot less than what I needed to buy a brand-new truck. If I had a nine-month-old car and it was written off, I’d get a brand new car under the ‘newfor-old’ clause in my insurance policy which applies to cars less than 12 months old. Why are trucks treated differently?

A Most truck insurers offer ‘new-for-old’ cover only on vehicles up to six months old. The reason for this is the wear and tear some trucks experience means even after only nine months, they might be worth quite a lot less than what they cost when new. So to offer to settle a loss on a ‘new-for-old’ basis after possibly significant wear and tear might put a customer in a significantly better position after a total loss compared with the point just before the damage occurred.

What you may wish to consider for the future depending on your needs and circumstances is taking out a ‘backto-invoice’ insurance policy (covering the difference be-tween a market value based insurance settlement and the invoice price), which may be available through certain truck manufacturers.

Q As well as running a small transport company, as a side-line we buy and sell a few trucks. We also do a bit of mechanical work for a firm that’s based near-by.

Our insur-ance cover is based on us just being a haulage company.

Do you think that’s OK given haulage is very much our main business?

A You need to let your broker or insurer know as soon as possible exactly what all your business activities entail so that the right cover can be arranged. And until the right cov-er has been put in place, our advice has to be to put your motor trade activities on hold until the cover is there. The reasons for this are very clear.

Firstly, you need to make sure you have Employers’ Liability and Motor Third-Party Liability covers – both being compulsory covers – that cater for your motortrade-related activities. Secondly, there are covers available under specially designed motor trade policies that provide protec-tion that’s particularly appropriate to the needs of motor vehicle dealers and workshops. Talk to your broker as soon as you can, tell them about all your business activities, and ask them to arrange an insurance programme that offers cover both for your haulage and motor trade activities.

Q I run a small haulage business employing around four full-time staff. They all belong to a National Lottery syndicate. I’m slightly concerned that one day, they could ‘win the jackpot’ and all disappear off to sunnier climes!

Can I arrange insurance cover to protect me against the impact that this could have on my business?

A As you obviously know, this does very occasionally happen, albeit the chance, com-pared with many other insurance ‘perils’, is considered rather remote. That said, if it does happen, it could leave a business really struggling, so yes, cover against this risk is available. Specialist standalone cover can be arranged.

an extension to their standard business interruption cover. Ask your broker for advice.

Q I’m an owner-driver. Recently I started collecting trailers arriving on ro-ro ferries. Do I need CMR insurance, or will my standard hauliers’ liability insurance which is based on my using RHA Conditions of Carriage be sufficient?

A Statutory liability under CMR applies, with a few exceptions such as furniture removal, to every contract for the carriage of goods by road in vehicles for reward from one country to another provided that at least one of the countries has signed up to the con-vention.

The term ‘vehicles’ means motor vehicles, articulated vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers. CMR under statute applies to the entire journey meaning in your case that collecting trailers that have arrived at UK ports on roll-on roll-off ferries does require the arranging of CMR cover.

Q I’ve currently got all my

machinery and equipment insured on a ‘reinstatement as new’ basis.

Last year, my broker said I could save some money by switching to an ‘indemnity’ basis which would limit any insurance pay-out to the market value at the time of the

loss. Would you advise a customer to insurance their machinery and equipment on an indemnity or reinstatement basis?

A Cover on an indemnity basis is reliant upon there being a viable second-hand marketplace that enables you to quickly go out and buy a second-hand replacement.

Whilst there might be a viable second-hand market for things like fairly standard fork-lift trucks, that’s less likely with many other items of machinery and the like.

Our advice would be to insure on a ‘reinstatement as new’ basis unless you are entirely confident that an indemnity settlement would suffice.

Q I run a small haulage business.

While I’ve been using my existing insurance broker for over 10 years, for certain reasons I’m thinking about switching to another broker.

How would you advise a firm like ours to go about choosing a new broker?

A Haulage insurance is a specialist field so it’s well worth taking the time to find a broker that really knows your industry and can help you choose the cover that’s most appropriate to your particular business. Things to look for from an insurance broker include a proven knowledge of

the haulage industry, in particular matters such as transit insurance issues relating to Conditions of Carriage and CMR, being able to give the right advice and support when a claim gets complicated and being able to offer advice and solutions to help keep insurance premiums under control.
