Research Boredom:

the state of feeling bored.

“The boredom of afternoon duty could be relieved by friendly conversation.”

Synonyms: » weariness, ennui, apathy, unconcern; frustration, dissatisfaction, restlessness, lethargy, restiveness, lassitude; tedium, dullness, monotony, repetitiveness, flatness, dreariness, informal deadliness

Antonyms: » concern, energy, excitement, feeling, interest, liveliness, sympathy, vigor, pleasure

History • “Boredom” first became a word in 1852, with the publication of Charles Dickens’ Bleak House; as an emotional state, it obviously dates back a lot further. • Roman philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca talks about boredom as a kind of nausea around 31 AD. • Greek historian Plutarch notes that Pyrrhus became desperately bored in his retirement. Pyrrhus was a Greek general of the Hellenistic period. He was king of the Greek tribe of Molossians of the royal Aeacid house, and later he became king of Epirus and Macedon. He was one of the strongest opponents of early Rome. • In Christian tradition, chronic boredom was “acedia”, a sin that’s sort eventually turns to sloth. By the Renaissance, it had morphed from a demon-induced sin into melancholia, a depression brought on by too aggressive study of maths and sciences. • In the 18th century, boredom became a punitive tool, although the Quakers who built the first “penitentiary” probably didn’t see it that way. In 1790, they constructed a prison in Philadelphia in which inmates were kept in isolation at all hours of the day. The idea was that the silence would help them to seek forgiveness from God. In reality, it just drove them insane. (7)

Giving your mind a break from the constant stimulation of technology allows it to better take in new things and have new thoughts. Discover New Hobbies & Interests: Use the extra energy you have when you’re bored to try a new activity, you’ll enjoy your time and learn something, whereas if you’re just scrolling through Instagram, you won’t really have gained anything. Help You Cultivate Mindfulness: Mindfulness is the practice of focusing one’s awareness entirely on the present moment. The research has found significant health benefits of mindfulness, including improved sleep, emotional stability and more success with weight-loss. (4)

Dear Mrs. Smith Alice was beginning to get very tired sitting by her sister on the bank, and B R Eof DOM of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, ‘and what is the use of a book,’ thought Alice ‘without pictures or conversation?’ So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her. There was nothing so VERY remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so VERY much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself, ‘Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!’ (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually TOOK A WATCH OUT OF ITS WAISTCOAT-POCKET, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge. In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again. The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well. Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next. First, she tried to look down and make out what she was coming to, but it was too dark to see anything; then she looked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with cupboards and book-shelves; here and there she saw maps and pictures hung upon pegs. She took down a jar from one of the shelves as she passed; it was labelled ‘ORANGE MARMALADE’, but to her great disappointment it was empty: she did not like to drop the jar for fear of killing somebody, so managed to put it into one of the cupboards as she fell past it. ‘Well!’ thought Alice to herself, ‘after such a fall as this, I shall think nothing of tumbling down stairs! How brave they’ll all think me at home! Why, I wouldn’t say anything about it, even if I fell off the top of the house!’ (Which was very likely true.) Sincerely

Process Essay

The first part of this assignment was to represent an assigned emotion. I was randomly

assigned Boredom. When starting my research I tried to look for things such as colors and symbols that represented boredom. I first looked up the definition and the synonyms and antonyms of boredom so that I could have a general idea of what it is. After that I was lucky enough to find a history of boredom. After that I looked for symbols of boredom and what they meant and the benefits of being bored. Lastly I found works of art that show boredom. The next step in this process was to do more brainstorming to help get more images and more was to represent our emotion in a way we never thought of. So I made a mind map; the mind map helped me expand my ideas in a way that I never pictured it before especially in the “how is it expressed?” area.

The next part of the assignment was to finally start sketching logo ideas. The first part

was to make fifty thumbnails. The first twenty thumbnails had to represent icon, index and symbols of our emotion. I stated off by making a literal bored, and then I did things that represented waiting such as the “take a number machine,” yawning, waiting in line and loading. The next thirty thumbnails I had to come up at least four concepts. My sketches were about loading and waiting, things people do when they are bored, doodles surrounding the word, and a sloth because it’s so slow. I then did more thumbnails to build off my better previous ideas. I expanded using the hourglass, the waiting ticket, and I played with the word and having it falling over. I then took my best two ideas and developed them further in a larger scale of 8”X8” inches. The first idea was about using the hourglass to replace the first O in the word boredom, I also had it replace the B once. My second idea was to use the ticket to represent the M in the word, but I also had the letter in the ticket to show the writing the ticket would have on it. The next step was to digitize my best ideas in size 5”X5”inch and 1”X1” inch to see how it would work in different sizes. I still developed two idea. I did the hourglass replacing the O and the ticket as the M. While developing the logos further I also created a look & feel bored. On my look and feel bored I wanted to represent what boredom could look like. I have color pallets, textures, patterns and typefaces. I also have art that’s representing boredom or a bored expression. Lastly I finalized my logo. I went with the hourglass replacing the O. I started with a digital looking hourglass, but I decided that it wasn’t versatile enough to be seen I’m many settings besides on a computer. To change this by curving the edges and making the sand a solid shape rather than pixels. I also make the decision to use Din Alternate Bold because like the hourglass its geometric but it has curves that match the style. Its also important that the hourglass has the same

caplin and baseline.

The next step in the process was to make collateral, a letterhead, envelope, and busi-

ness card, but we also had to make a wild card piece. The first step was to do twenty thumbnail sets of the collateral. I wasn’t really sure what to do with this part except to make unified pieces. I tried to use shapes from my hourglass to create form on the page. From there I digitized three of each. My first idea was to take the inner shape of the hourglass as a form on the page that also acted as a kind of border. The second was to have the hourglass stand-alone and the last idea was to doodle. From these ideas I went with the doodles and also combined the shape idea on the business card. The collateral was filled with doodles but lefts room around the text so that it would still be legible. I used Din anytime boredom was used and then I used Meta OT for the supporting font. I used Meta Book for the body copy on the letterhead. I used Meta Light for the main paring, it was on all the collateral. For my wild card piece I made an ice cream truck in Illustrator. For the truck I stuck to my color scheme to black and white and made it very plan and classic except or that back that has the doodles on it and the logo on all sides. I also made a little menu on the one side and made a few icons to represent the different ice cream options. Packaging was the next step in the process. First I had to decide what to package. For the thumbnails I chose three things. I did plain yogurt, and vanilla ice cream because they are the most boring flavors. For the third product I did pens because of the doodle idea and that would be what you doodled with. I decided to package the vanilla ice cream. I then had to find a temple to have the form and proportions so I bought a Ben&Jerry’s Ice cream and cut it at the seam and then traced the shape and scanned it in. I then began designing the packaging, I had one that was an interactive maze and the other was a doodle package. From there I decided to make three flavor: plain vanilla, barely strawberry, and chalky chocolate and make them all interactive. The plain vanilla was the maze with a maze design the remaining packaging. The strawberry became a word search with words that are synonyms of the word boredom and the letters wrapping the whole package, and the chocolate became I Spy in the style of doodles. From there I had them printed and I wrapped them around Ben&Jerry’s containers to make them look like actual products. I then photographed them individually and as a group. Lastly I made a brand book that was basically a rulebook to how my logo could be used and how it couldn’t be used.

I honestly really liked this assignment and how my product turned out, so I wouldn’t

change anything. I learned a lot from this assignment, mainly when designing the packaging and the brand book. I actually learned how to make packaging and that there are a lot of free temples that you can use. For the brand book I learned that you have to learn to be specific when saying how something can be used such as the type size and leading. I learned the actual purpose of the brand book and why it’s so important to have one.

For this project, I worked to create a brand that would represent the emotion boredom. My icon of an hourglass represetents an hourglass because it looks like an hourglass so it is what it looks like. The hourglass is indexical of boredom because of the insinuates time passing time and representation of flowing sand is also indexical of boredom for the same reason. For my packaging the games are indexical of boredom becsuse it represents busy work. People do busy work when they are bored to give them a form of entertainment. The word boredom is a symbol of because it says what it is.
