N OTA B L E T I T L E S I NEVER CALL IT BIG BANG George Gamow: The Extraordinary Story of a Genius of Physics by Alessandro Bottino (University of Turin, Italy) & Cristina Favero This book tells the incredible story of George Gamow, one of the most brilliant and extravagant physicists of the past century. Gamow was born in Russia in 1904 and died in the USA in 1968. He lived his life in a time between the twenties and the sixties, characterized by rapid developments in physics and became a key figure of that time. Gamow’s true merits were seldom fully recognized. Yet his ideas are behind a number of Nobel Prizes for Physics during the past century. His remarkable achievements in Nuclear Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology were the result of a combination of expertise and creativity, intuition and, importantly, of a good sense of humor. Together they craft the image of a true revolutionary scientist. Gamow also had a natural talent for popularization and was throughout his life a successful science communicator. MATHEMATICAL GAME THEORY by Ulrich Faigle (University of Cologne, Germany) What is a game? Classically, a game is perceived as something played by human beings. Its mathematical analysis is human-centered, explores the structures of particular games, economic or social environments and tries to model supposedly “rational” human behavior in search of appropriate “winning strategies”. This point of view places game theory into a very special scientific corner where mathematics, economics and psychology overlap and mingle. More details on Page 19

[ ARTS ] PHILOSOPHY
ALFRED NORTH WHITEHEAD, PHILOSOPHER OF TIME by Rémy Lestienne (CNRS Paris, France) Alfred North Whitehead (1861 – 1947), a mathematician and logician by training, is the author of highly original works at the crossroads of science and philosophy, exploring the nature of the world around us and its temporal flow. Convinced that everyday terms distort reality, Whitehead invented or borrowed terms more appropriate to his project. The word “Process”, which gives its title to his most famous work Process and Reality (1929), is central to his thinking. Process introduces his vision of nature as a succession of crystallizations, each of which proves the finite granularity of time: the instant does not exist. It also implies a confrontation with the theory of relativity and quantum physics. More details on Page 46

GLOBAL NATIONALISM Ideas, Movements and Dynamics in the Twenty-First Century edited by Pablo de Orellana & Nicholas Michelsen (King’s College London, UK) The twenty-first century is witnessing a truly transnational revival of a very old set of ideas. Despite romantic attachments to old symbols, these late modern nationalism movements are not simply replicas of the previous two waves of nationalism in the 1860s and 1920s. Nor is it true that today’s nationalism movements want simply to return to the past and effect a nationalist 1930s-style retrenchment. From Putin’s macho revivalism, through to Trump’s shocking victory and Xi’s strongman regionalism, nationalists engage with the economic context of our time and address issues born of globalization. Crucially, in their vision for international relations they seek the destruction of key international norms in a drive to restore a vision of sovereignty predicated on a survivalist understanding of state power. THE SUN AND THE OTHER STARS OF DANTE ALIGHIERI
by Oriol T Valls (University of Minnesota, USA)
A Cosmographic Journey through the Divina Commedia
The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri is the story of a journey across the Universe as it was known in the Middle Ages, a work of science fiction ante litteram. Dante had an encyclopedic mind, no doubt, and his poem is the most widely read book after the Bible. He was a master of the astronomical knowledge of his time, and used astronomy in his work to indicate places, to measure time, and to exemplify beauty. Indeed, in the Convivio, he wrote that science is “the ultimate perfection of our soul” and “astronomy — more than any other science — is noble and high for a noble and high subject.”
This is a theory book, but the theory is neither abstruse nor esoteric. Knowledge of only introductory graduate physics has been assumed; a solid undergraduate training and a bit of perseverance would also be enough. This book can easily be read and understood by experimentalists, and just about anybody can grasp the basics by referring to the figures and explanations.
Contents: Introduction; Historical Introduction; Dante’s Biography and Works; Astronomy Before Dante; The Calendar of the Comedy; The Earth of Dante; Atmospheric Phenomena; The Motions of the Heavens; The Moon; The Planets; The Stars; Mysteries of the Milky Way; An Unlimited but Finite Universe; Parallel Universes; Astrology; Conclusions; References.

The Science and the Story
BOOKS
by Norval Fortson (University of Washington, USA)
The figure of Gamow is interesting also from a cultural perspective. His life stretches across a critical period in our history and moves geographically from Russia to the USA, via Europe. His story provides insights into the complex dialogue between historical events and scientific developments during the twentieth century.
With Professor Fortson, distinguished experimental physicist, as your tour guide, follow the journey from the 17th century — when Descartes first calculated the size of the rainbow — to the 20th century, when the quantum theory of light was born. Learn how Huygens, Newton, Planck, Einstein and many other great scientists solved one mystery after another, from the reason underlying the law of refraction to the puzzle of the photoelectric effect. The journey ends with the solution to the most challenging mystery of all: that light is both a wave and a particle — a fascinating finale.
Our book builds on the extensive interview that science historian Charles Weiner did with Gamow shortly before his death. Here Gamow offers a complete survey of his scientific achievements. Tapping onto their dialogue, we have enriched the picture of Gamow’s figure with materials gathered also from other sources. First of all, we discuss his autobiography, in which Gamow mainly focuses on the education he received in Russia and on his experience as a young scientist in Europe.
Contents: Reflection and Refraction of Light; Huygens Found the Wave Theory of Light; Newton Turns His Genius to the Study of Color; The Speed of Light: Timing Jupiter’s Moons; The Speed of Light: The Advent of Precision Astronomy; 1800: Thomas Young Revives the Wave Theory; The Wave Theory Triumphs: Fresnel 1815 – 1825; A Momentous Discovery: Joseph Fraunhofer Observes Spectral Lines; Light is an Electromagnetic Wave; The Entrance of the Photon and the Birth of Quantum Theory.

TIME AND BEAUTY
Why Time Flies and Beauty Never Dies by Adrian Bejan (Duke University, USA)
Textbook
Organized into three main ideas, the book begins first with the perception of time. The author expounds on why we feel that time flies faster as we get older. Perceived time, also called “mind time, “ is different from clock time. In this context, time is another word for “perceived change”. Next, readers will discover that beauty is appealing because beautifully-shaped images are scanned faster by two eyes. To observe our immediate surroundings and to understand them faster is highly advantageous to survival; hence, there is an underlying evolutionary advantage to our discernment for ideal ratios, shapes, and beauty at large. Finally, time and beauty are jointly understood to explain why the global pandemic had decelerated our mind time. This understanding arms us with techniques to slow down our mind time (which accelerates with age), and to create the conditions for living longer and more creatively.

BOOKS
The book builds up the phenomena of the quantum world — quantization, interference, and entanglement — in the simplest possible system, the qubit. Once the phenomena are introduced, it builds mathematical machinery for describing them. It goes on to generalize those concepts and that machinery to more intricate systems. Special attention is paid to identical particles, the source of considerable student confusion. In the last chapter, students get a taste of what is not treated in the book and are invited to continue exploring quantum mechanics. Problems in the book test both conceptual and technical knowledge, and invite students to develop their own questions.

Through the two chapters of this monograph, we wish to highlight the applicability and breadth of techniques of trigonometric/exponential sums in various problems focusing on the interplay of Mathematical Analysis and Analytic Number Theory. We wish to stress the point that the goal is not only to prove the desired results, but also to present a plethora of intermediate Propositions and Corollaries investigating the behaviour of such sums, which can also be applied in completely different problems and settings than the ones treated within this monograph.

BOOKS
In this age of technology where messages are transmitted in sequences of 0’s and 1’s through space, errors can occur due to noisy channels. Thus, self-correcting code is vital to eradicate these errors when the number of errors is small. It is widely used in industry for a variety of applications including e-mail, telephone, and remote sensing (for example, photographs of Mars). An expert in algebra and algebraic geometry, Tzuong-Tsieng Moh covers many essential aspects of algebraic coding theory in this book, such as elementary algebraic coding theories, the mathematical theory of vector spaces and linear algebras behind them, various rings and associated coding theories, a fast decoding method, useful parts of algebraic geometry and geometric coding theories.

by Khristo N Boyadzhiev (Ohio Northern University, USA)
This monograph provides a coherent development of operads, infinity operads, and monoidal categories, equipped with equivariant structures encoded by an action operad. A group operad is a planar operad with an action operad equivariant structure. In the first three parts of this monograph, we establish a foundation for group operads and for their higher coherent analogues called infinity group operads. Examples include planar, symmetric, braided, ribbon, and cactus operads, and their infinity analogues. For example, with the tools developed here, we observe that the coherent ribbon nerve of the universal cover of the framed little 2-disc operad is an infinity ribbon operad. Contents: Operads with Group Equivariance: Introduction; Planar Operads; Symmetric Operads; Group Operads; Braided Operads; Ribbon Operads; Cactus OperadsConstructions of Group Operads: Naturality; Group Operads as Algebras; Group Operads with Varying Colors; Boardman-Vogt Construction for Group OperadsInfinity Group Operads: Category of Group Trees; Contractibility of Group Tree Category; Generalized Reedy Structure; Realization-Nerve Adjunction for Group Operads; Nerve Theorem for Group Operads; Coherent Realization-Nerve and Infinity Group OperadsCoherence for Monoidal Categories with Group Equivariance: Monoidal Categories; G-Monoidal Categories; Coherence for G-Monoidal Categories; Braided and Symmetric Monoidal Categories; Ribbon Monoidal Categories; and others. MATHEMATICAL LOGIC AND FOUNDATIONS
MATHEMATICAL GAME THEORY
Textbook
by Ulrich Faigle (University of Cologne, Germany) This book takes a novel approach to the subject. Its focus is on mathematical models that apply to game theory in particular but exhibit a universal character and thus extend the scope of game theory considerably. This textbook addresses anyone interested in a general game-theoretic view of the world. The reader should have mathematical knowledge at the level of a first course in real analysis and linear algebra. However, possibly more specialized aspects are further elaborated and pointers to relevant supplementary literature are given. Moreover, many examples invite the reader to participate “actively” when going through the material. The scope of the book can be covered in one course on Mathematical Game Theory at advanced undergraduate or graduate level.

LECTURES ON QUANTUM MECHANICS AND ATTRACTORS
by Alexander Komech (Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia & Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia & Vienna University, Austria)
BOOKS
by Abraham Albert Ungar (North Dakota State University, USA)
This book gives a concise introduction to Quantum Mechanics with a systematic, coherent, and in-depth explanation of related mathematical methods from the scattering theory and the theory of Partial Differential Equations.
This book presents a powerful way to study Einstein’s special theory of relativity and its underlying hyperbolic geometr y in which analogies with classical results form the right tool. The premise of analogy as a study strategy is to make the u n f a m i l i a r f a m i l i a r. Accordingly, this book introduces the notion of vectors into analytic hyperbolic geometry, where they are called gyrovectors. Gyrovectors turn out to be equivalence classes that add according to the gyroparallelogram law just as vectors are equivalence classes that add according to the parallelogram law. In the gyrolanguage of this book, accordingly, one prefixes a gyro to a classical term to mean the analogous term in hyperbolic geometry. As an example, the relativistic gyrotrigonometry of Einstein’s special relativity is developed and employed to the study of the stellar aberration phenomenon in astronomy.
The book utilizes elementary mathematical derivations. The presentation assumes only basic knowledge of the origin of Hamiltonian mechanics, Maxwell equations, calculus, Ordinary Differential Equations and basic PDEs. Key topics include the Schrö dinger, Pauli, and Dirac equations, the corresponding conservation laws, spin, the hydrogen spectrum, and the Zeeman effect, scattering of light and particles, photoelectric effect, electron diffraction, and relations of quantum postulates with attractors of nonlinear Hamiltonian PDEs. Featuring problem sets and accompanied by extensive contemporary and historical references, this book could be used for the course on Quantum Mechanics and is also suitable for individual study.
Contents: Gyrogroups; Gyrocommutative Gyrogroups; Gyrogroup Extension; Gyrovectors and Cogyrovectors; Gyrovector Spaces; Rudiments of Differential Geometry; Gyrotrigonometry; Bloch Gyrovector of Quantum Information and Computation; Special Theory of Relativity: The Analytic Hyperbolic Geometric Viewpoint; Relativistic Gyrotrigonometry; Stellar and Particle Aberration; Enriched Special Relativity Theory: Special Relativity of Signature (m, n).
Contents: Nonrelativistic Quantum Mechanics; Scattering of Light and Particles; Atom in Magnetic Field; Relativistic Quantum Mechanics; Quantum Postulates and Attractors; Attractors of Hamiltonian PDEs; Old Quantum Theory; Noether Theory of Invariants; Stationary Perturbation Theory.
Readership: The book is aimed at a large audience. It includes both elementary and advanced topics, and is structured so it can be enjoyed equally by undergraduates, graduate students, researchers and academics.

MATHEMATICAL FOUNDATIONS OF NONEXTENSIVE STATISTICAL MECHANICS
PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS Textbook
by Sabir Umarov (University of New Haven, USA) & Constantino Tsallis (Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Fisicas, Brazil) The book is devoted to the mathematical foundations of nonextensive statistical mechanics. This is the first book containing the systematic presentation of the mathematical theor y and concepts related to nonextensive statistical mechanics, a current generalization of Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics introduced in 1988 by one of the authors and based on a nonadditive entropic functional extending the usual BoltzmannGibbs-von Neumann-Shannon entropy. Main mathematical tools like the q-exponential function, q-Gaussian distribution, q-Fourier transform, q-central limit theorems, and other related objects are discussed rigorously with detailed mathematical rational. The book also contains recent results obtained in this direction and challenging open problems. Each chapter is accompanied with additional useful notes including the history of development and related bibliographies for further reading.

INTRODUCTION TO HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS (2nd Edition)
This book is a graphic introduction to how chemistry developed, from ancient times to now. Led by cartoon host, Ben Zene — with occasional interjections by eccentric Greek philosopher Democritus — readers learn about ancient Greek and Chinese elements, alchemists, and the development of chemistry as we know it today, from Robert Boyle and Antoine Lavoisier, from Elizabeth Fulhame and John Dalton, to Jö ns Jakob Berzelius and Friedrich Wö hler, to Rosalind Franklin, Linus Pauling, and Mario Molina. The book delves into topics like nanochemistry, environmental chemistry, and how the structure of atoms and molecules was uncovered, all with good humor, bright colors, and lively drawings. There are occasional sidebars on chemicalrelated history and the arts, and factoids such as how President of the USA Herbert Hoover and President of Israel Chaim Weizmann influenced chemistry, how personal politics may have denied Gilbert Lewis the Nobel Prize, a Japanese tale of intrigue mingling with chemistry, and which chemist was the first living person to have an element named for him.
BOOKS
by Roel Prins (ETH Zürich, Switzerland), Anjie Wang (Dalian University of Technology, China), Xiang Li (Tianjin University of Science and Technology, China) & Foteini Sapountzi (Syngaschem BV, The Netherlands) The second edition differs from the first edition in the way basic topics are integrated with catalytic applications. The authors introduce two new chapters: “Cleaning of Fuels by Hydrotreating” and “Electrocatalysis”. Hydrotreating is a very important industrial process and offers the opportunity to discuss metal sulfide catalysts. Electrocatalysis gains more and more attention because it can be used to minimize the anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Solar, wind, and hydroelectricity can drive water electrolysis and CO2 electroreduction and, therefore, excess renewable electricity can be stored in chemicals. Contents: Introduction; Catalyst Preparation and Characterization; Adsorption; Kinetics; Metal Surfaces; Metal Catalysis; Catalysis by Solid Acids; Cleaning of Fuels by Hydrotreating; Oxidation Catalysis; Electrocatalysis.
Contents: Introduction; Ancient Times; Alchemy; First Chemists; Revolution; Atoms (Again); Rise of Organic Chemistry; The Periodic Table; Molecular Structure; Physical Chemistry; Industrial Chemistry; Chemical Warfare; Electrons and Protons and Neutrons, Oh My!; Atomic Structure & Bonding; Polymers; Isotopes & Artificial Elements; Environmental Chemistry; Nanochemistry; Epilogue.
Readership: Meant for a one-semester course for chemistry, physics, materials science, and chemical engineering students with no former knowledge of catalysis. The Roles of Carbon and Bio-Carbon: An Introduction to Molecular Sciences
THE HYDROGEN ECONOMY
by Pierre Vogel (Swiss Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland)
by Duncan Seddon (Duncan Seddon & Associates Pty. Ltd, Australia)
Due to overconsumption of fossil carbon, humanity faces four major problems: global warming, decrease of biodiversity, pollution of the biosphere, and the degradation of agriculture soils. It is not enough to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by stopping the consumption of fossil carbon; it is also urgent to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In order to understand the challenges outlined above, a minimal knowledge of the most important carbon compounds and their transformations is an asset. This textbook is therefore an introduction to the molecular sciences and shows how we depend on carbon compounds, what they are and how they are transformed.
For any given project, there are many alternatives to consider for each stage of making, storing and transporting hydrogen. The book aims to assist proponents, and financiers of hydrogen projects to identify the optimum alternatives and identify hurdles and approaches to overcome them. This book attempts to describe an optimum approach to implement and its cost. It sets out to identify hurdles to implementation which may not be apparent to those entering the field for the first time.

The book offers an overview of credit risk modeling and management. A three-step approach is adopted with the contents, after introducing the essential concepts of both mathematics and finance.
Advanced Techniques and Glassblowing’s Place in History by Paul Le Pinnet (British Society of Scientific Glassblowers, UK)
BOOKS
This book pushes back the boundaries of Scientific Glassblowing, emphasizing the possibilities of the material.
Initially the focus is on the modeling of credit risk parameters mainly at the level of individual debtor and transaction, after which the book delves into counterparty credit risk, thus providing the link between credit and market risks. The second part is aimed at the portfolio level when multiple loans are pooled and default correlation becomes an important factor to consider and model. In this respect, the book explains how copulas help in modeling. The final stage is the macro perspective when the combination of credit risks related to financial institutions produces systemic risk and affects overall financial stability.
In addition to the author’s own chapters, he has invited Scientific Glassblowers from around the world to describe advanced glassblowing techniques in addition to the historical background of its development. Contents: Lasers and Lathes; Radiometer XXL; Toepler Pump; X Ray Dewar; J Priestly, a Man of the Enlightenment; Ferrous Free Vacuum Cart; Otto Baumbach, Master Glassblower; Bursting Disc Failure Detector Tubes; Ebulliometer: its Discovery and Manufacture; Neon Tube Manufacture; Hydrofluoric Acid Etching; Paris School for Training Glassblowers; Historical Background and the Latest Developments in Glass-Related Research Work.
In summary, the book guides the reader in modeling and managing credit risk by providing both the theoretical framework and the empirical tools necessary for a modern finance professional. In this sense, the book is aimed at a wide audience in all fields of study: from quants who want to engage in finance to economists who want to learn about coding and modern financial engineering.

Purification and Analysis Techniques
BOOKS
edited by Kristina Warton (University of New South Wales, Australia) & Goli Samimi (National Cancer Institute, USA)
A general systems theory model predicts quasiperiodic Penrose tiling pattern for the nested coiled structure of the DNA molecule in the chromosome resulting in maximum packing efficiency and unified whole fuzzy logic network architecture with ordered two-way signal transmission between the coding and non-coding (junk DNA) regions.
Circulating cell-free DNA is poised to transform cancer diagnosis and care; however, it carries technical challenges such as low abundance, fragmentation and sensitivity to biospecimen handling. Development of clinically useful assays hinges on understanding the unique technical aspects of working with cell-free DNA as a substrate. This book provides an in-depth summary of the technical issues impacting cell-free DNA purification from blood plasma and analysis in a cancer context, including design of PCR assays, sequencing library preparation and methylation analysis. Emerging fields such as extracellular vesicles and blood nucleases are also covered, as well as basic biology and considerations pertinent to biobanking.
Junk DNA are not redundant. Modification of the DNA base sequence structure at any location may have significant noticeable effects on the function of the DNA molecule as a whole. This book helps us understand the cooperative existence of individual components for optimum performance of the system. Contents: Universal Characteristics of Fractal Fluctuations: General Systems Theory; Nonlinear Dynamics, Chaos and SelfOrganized Criticality; Universal Spectrum for DNA Base C+G Frequency Distribution in Human Chromosomes 1 to 24: Data Set I; Quantumlike Chaos in the Frequency Distributions of Bases A, C, G, T in Human Chromosome1 DNA: Data Set II; Universal Spectrum for DNA Base C+G Concentration Variability in Human Chromosome Y: Data Set III; Quantumlike Chaos in the Frequency Distributions of the Bases A, C, G, T in Drosophila DNA: Data Set IV; Universal Spectrum for DNA Base CG Frequency Distribution in Takifugu rubripes (Puffer fish) Genome: Data Set V; Long-Range Correlations in Human Chromosome X DNA Base CG Frequency Distribution: Data Set VI.

by Dong-sung Cho (The Institute for Industrial Policy Studies, South Korea & Seoul National University, South Korea) & Hwy-chang Moon (The Institute for Policy & Strategy on National Competitiveness, South Korea & Seoul National University, South Korea)
B e y o n d r e a l G D P, innovative capacity is an important indicator of the economic strength of a nation. By studying i n n o v a t i ve c a p a c i t y and other indicators of success in innovation across the Group-ofSeven (G7) Countries, the East Asian Newly Industrialised Economies (EANIEs) and Mainland China, this book will systematically establish a positive relationship between innovation outputs and inputs of different economies. In doing so, it seeks to answer the question — are there laws of innovation? It seeks to identify the determinants of innovation at the economy-wide level, ascertain whether these determinants are similar across different economies, and find suitable metrics for comparing relative success in innovation across different economies. It concludes that innovation, rather than being a stroke of good fortune, comes from research and development activities conducted over a long period of time, and sheds light on future trends and areas for further research.
The analy tical tools used in this book can be further utilized for other units of analysis such as industries and firms. As this book provides a series of sophisticated methodologies and specific guidelines for enhancing national competitiveness, both academics and practitioners can derive useful implications from this research. Alongside the theoretical frameworks and methodologies for national competitiveness presented in this book, timely topics are included such as the COVID-19 global pandemic and the US – China trade war. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND INNOVATION MANAGEMENT
TOTAL INNOVATION MANAGEMENT
edited by Stoyan Tanev (Carleton University, Canada) & Helena Blackbright (Mälardalen University, Sweden)
Theory and Practice
by Qingrui Xu (Zhejiang University, China)
Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Management contributes to the ongoing debate among innovation scholars and practitioners focusing on the potential impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the ways companies and organizations do business, operate and innovate. It considers AI as a source of innovation both in terms of innovation within the field of AI itself (AI innovation) and in terms of how it enables or disrupts innovation in other fields (AI-driven innovation). It is therefore both necessary and timely to explore the different aspects of the relationship between AI and Innovation Management (IM).
The research results are not only the results of a three-year long research but also the reflection of the accumulated experiences of our research center in the field of technology innovation for nearly 40 years. In the field of technology innovation, we have experienced three distinct phases, namely: secondary innovation, portfolio innovation and total innovation.
Featured Contents: Introduction (Stoyan Tanev and Helena Blackbright); What AI Can Do for Innovation Managers and Innovation Managers for AI (Nina Bozic Yams and Galina Esther Shubina); A Knowledge-Based Perspective of Strategic AI Innovation Management (Erich Prem); Addressing AI Traps: Realizing the Potential of AI for Innovation Trend Spotting, Monitoring and Decision Making (Amber Geurts); Social Media Video Analysis for Entrepreneurial O p p o r t u n i t y D i s c o ve r y i n A r t i f i c i a l Intelligence (Mika Westerlund and Maham Aman); AI-Driven Innovation: Towards a Conceptual Framework (Sergey Yablonsky); and others.

BOOKS
edited by Paolo Rizzi (Link to Beijing Consulting Partnership, China), Cristiano Rizzi (Link to Beijing Consulting Partnership, China & Eurasian Development Solution, China) & Mario Tettamanti (Link to Beijing Consulting Partnership, Switzerland – China)
by Dilip Soman (University of Toronto, Canada) & Sara N-Marandi (Google) This book is written for an advanced student of business and the practicing manager. It presents an integrated view of the marketing function. In particular, it focuses on all the activities that a firm engages in to create and manage value - not just the customer-facing activities. It links the traditional views of customer value with the finance, accounting, human resources, organizational behaviour, information technology and operations functions of the organization. It draws on the science of behaviour change and the data sciences to present a contemporary view of the customer value function. The content is meant to be prescriptive — it describes a process for value creation and management, yet analytical; theoretical, yet empirically driven. It urges the reader to think about the customer value function to be organized along activities that the firm would like the customers to engage in, not activities that the firm engages in. It presents a framework that is not only conceptually driven but also has a sound mathematical basis.
This book aims to illustrate the impact of COVID-19 on the global aviation industry and its many facets and disruptive innovations this crisis is bringing to the industry, triggering a new phase of development for air transportation. The aviation industry is also moving towards operating electric aircraft. The book emphasizes a new concept of air travel and an entirely new type of aircraft called eVTOL, which is to say - electric Vertical take-off and landing aircraft. This new reality is already taking place with the development of prototypes. However, the road to its implementation is full of challenges. Featured Contents: The Growing Interdependence Between the Aviation Industry and the Economic Development of Nations; The Responses of the Market Concerning the Impact of COVID-19 on the Different Sectors of the Aviation Industry; The Impact of New Technologies on the Evolution of a Greener Aviation Industry and the Emerging of a New Urban Air Mobility (UAM); and others.

Dynamic Decisions highlights how some managers and policymakers sleepwalk into decision paralysis. Strategically, they partly recognise their world is changing radically as energy systems transition. In deciding what to invest in, they default to rewarding the predictable and proven, often misdiagnosing the ignored risks of innately ambiguous markets. To remedy this, the author frames ambiguity as a source of opportunity. As extant advantages obsolesce, new entrants could disrupt to gain dominance. Some managers could repurpose, reframe, and reconfigure their resources and processes to create tomorrow’s profitable niches today. To profit from these emerging business landscapes, managers can PIVOT and BOUnCE to win by transitioning into a dynamic mindset. Endowed with a creative mind to innovate, humans could reshape their firms and their societies. Armed with these capabilities, albeit partial, managers could choose to adapt responsive strategic actions that are tangible, actionable, and achievable, with policy sustaining societal benefits by expanding people’s access to opportunities.

GLOBAL HEALTH IN PRACTICE
Lectures in Monetary Economics After ‘Rethinking’
Investing Amidst Pandemics, Denial of Evidence, and Neo-dependency
by John Smithin (York University, Canada)
by Olusoji Adeyi (Resilient Health Systems, USA & Johns Hopkins University, USA) Foreword by: Dean T Jamison (University of California, San Francisco, USA) This book is an incisive guide to the practice of global health in real life. Global health policy is at a crossroads. It is on trial at the interface between the Global North and the Global South. There has been remarkable progress in health outcomes over the past century. Yet, countries face a complex landscape of lofty ambitions in the form of political commitments to Universal Health Coverage, Human Capital, and Global Health Security. These ambitions are tempered by multiple constraints. Investors in global health must navigate a minefield of uneven progress, great expectations, and denials of scientific evidence by entrenched interests. That terrain is further complicated by the hegemonic suppression of innovation that threatens the status quo and by selfperpetuating cycles of dependency of the Global South on the Global North.

The conventional macroeconomic theory of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, based on the assumption that the working of complex monetary economy could be analysed on the same principles as those of barter exchange, has demonstrably failed. This book provides a thorough rethinking of the nature of a monetary economy. It builds upon a complete theory of the domestic and international monetary macro-economy, and of macroeconomic policy for the modern age. Central to the analysis is the idea that a successful market economy requires an endogenous supply of money via the banking system. Therefore to achieve macroeconomic stability, the book proposes the targeting of real interest rates under a regime of flexible exchange rates or ‘fixed but adjustable exchange rates’ as the main goal of monetary policy, along with a range of innovative fiscal and trade policies to promote economic growth, and thereby achieve full employment and a fair distribution of income.

Ideas, Movements and Dynamics in the Twenty-First Century
Effects on Diverse Fields
Global Nationalism, edited and framed by Pablo de Orellana and Nicholas Michelsen, brings together the latest research by upand-coming early career researchers and scholars. Beginning with a succinct history and typology of contemporary nationalism and its predecessors, this book offers analysis of several cases of contemporary nationalism, examining how specific movements define identity, address grievances and propose identity-based solutions. Key themes and lessons emerge from the study of a variety of cases, from the very ideas animating nationalist thought, to their expression in a wide variety of nationalist movements around the world. The reflections on the ecosystem of nationalist ideas and movements offered in this volume are a vital starting point in the study of contemporary nationalism as a global twenty-first century phenomenon.
While humanity continues to grapple with COVID-19 and its ramifications, Beyond COVID-19: Effects on Diverse Fields provides a unique opportunity to foresee the repercussions of the pandemic across a range of fields through the lens of chaos and complexity theory. This book takes COVID-19 as a holistic event, providing an interesting analysis of this chaotic phenomenon with the contributions of multi-disciplinary scholars. The expert views within this book come from a wide range of fields, from international relations to education and from sociology to law.

BOOKS
edited by Hooi Hooi Lean (Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia)
by Wolfgang Sachsenröder (Political Party Forum Southeast Asia, Singapore)
Beyond the efforts of preventing and containing the spread of the virus, ASEAN’s most significant challenges are the social and economic crisis of historic proportions that are beginning to unfold. COVID-19 pandemic has brought interruptions in all sectors of ASEAN economies. It is, therefore, imperative to assess the extent to which the pandemic has impacted the social and economic aspects of the region. This book intends to highlight the social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in ASEAN and suggest ways on how to mitigate them. It covers how the shocks from COVID-19 have impacted production, supply chains, demand, commodity prices, consumer behaviour, financial markets, employment, services, transportation and community, and the various policies that ASEAN authorities should put in place to mitigate the effects of the pandemic.
This book analyses the detrimental impact of the drug industry on the political economy and the social developments in Southeast Asia. This book constructs a new theoretical framework for understanding contemporary Chinese agricultural production organizations from the perspective of promoting farmers’ realization of “substantial freedom” and “feasible ability”. The new theoretical framework deepens and expands the theory of agricultural modernization and production organization. The book discusses the “multi-symbiosis” pattern of agricultural production organizations in contemporary China from macro and micro economics perspectives. Based on the peasant household economy, this multi-symbiosis organizational structure co-exists and interweaves with various forms of economic organizations.
