WELCOME TO KENDAL!

We are delighted to be wishing you a very warm welcome to Kendal Mountain Festival 2022.

After the rousing comeback last year when thousands of you returned to a long-awaited live event, our core team wondered –“How do we ever surpass that?!” We couldn’t have wished for a better resurgence – especially after the pandemic had halted all our lives so abruptly. It was incredibly touching to observe the collective positive energy, driven by our shared love and respect of the great outdoors. So here we are back again, congregating in this small market town on the edge of the Lake District as winter settles around us, to bathe in our collectiveness and pack as much as we can into four very special days... And there is just so much to share…we are delighted to be platforming this year more than 170 speakers, retelling stories from across the globe; over 40 talented writers, poets, and artists gathering under the trusted banner of our Book Festival; environmentalists and activists informing and asking us to take up the challenge of the biggest issues of our times and a record number of filmmakers who will awe our senses showcasing their work on the big screen. Supporting us are over 80 brand partners, charities and organisations who will be accompanied by the best specialists and experts the outdoor industry has to offer. We know that the conversations that happen at Kendal will broaden and inspire minds and carry on for many months ahead.

As many of you are aware, each year we select a central theme for the Festival on which to pin our stories, to guide the collective narrative and to create stimulation for debate. As we write this introduction in late 2022, it’s hard not to become despondent – the worsening state of our home planet on multiple climatic levels, a terrible war in Europe, social and political instability and the resultant financial pressures that many are now experiencing. Such challenges can also lead to fragmentation, isolation and disenfranchisement. It’s really hard not to get dragged down by all that surrounds us, yet in such difficult times we also see extreme levels of kindness, support and that beacon of hope – solidarity which for us was the obvious theme to select this year.

As our wonderful Book Festival Patron, eminent writer and Professor – Robert MacFarlane so perfectly states in his introduction :“…we want to celebrate and affirm the immense webwork of connections and relations that extends across and between the human and more-than-human worlds. As any mountaineer knows, solidarity is strength and solidarity is safety. Each is responsible for the other and reciprocal with the other. To successfully traverse a heavily crevassed glacier, or to top out on a big-wall climb, requires an intricate dance of taking-in and paying-out rope, of togetherness and teamwork, of duty to the group. So this year we come together -- our writers, film-makers and artists, and you our audiences -- to recognise the vital importance of unity, mutual support and generosity of spirit”

So let’s not forget – as we gather from all corners of the globe – to celebrate, to learn, to evolve, to find new pathways and to ultimately share the spirt of adventure. Let’s also be grateful that we can do this freely, in a spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect. Finally, we take great delight in you all joining us this year and we wish you a fabulous Festival filled with strong memories, new friendships and vibrant energy that will put a skip in your step for the year ahead. HOW TO ENJOY THE FESTIVAL - LIVE

TICKETS

All our events are individually ticketed and can be bought online at kendalmountainfestival.com or in person at the Box Office in the Brewery - open daily from 08.30AM. Many of the events are sold out but you can always check with the Box Office for last minute returned tickets. Nearly all sessions have numbered seats so there is no rush to find a seat with doors opening between 15 to 30 mins before the start. All sessions begin promptly.

VENUES

The Festival is spread throughout the town of Kendal with a few key locations. We were delighted with the successful move of the Basecamp Village to Abbot Hall Park last year and so it is back there again - but even bigger! Welcome to all and free to enter, here you will find the Info Desk, the Festival food & drink provision and our enormous tented village packed full of things to see and do. Come browse, wander, sit and listen and enjoy the Cotswold Outdoor Stage and BUFF® Bothy - delivering three days of fascinating talks - all for free. Plus new for this year is the Plas y Brenin Tipiwhere they will be sharing with you the skills you need to enjoy the outdoors. Open from 9.30am - 9.30pm, it really is the destination to head to.

Three minutes from Basecamp is the Brewery Arts - the central hub for our Film Programme and Literature Events. Here you will find our Box Office, the Rab Cinema Screens, the Guest Summit Lounge and the expanded Festival Bookshop. You can also enjoy their food and drink provision - many an adventure has been dreamed up over a pint in the Vats Bar! However it doesn’t only happen at these locations – we love using all the venues we can in the town. Stretching through the lanes of Kendal we have the Kendal Town Hall, Shakespeare Centre, Waterstones, The Venue at The Barrel House, Ruskins and the big one – the 900 seat Leisure Centre. The map at the back of the programme will help you find your way!

PROGRAMME

It just keeps on expanding! Films continue to be at the heart of Kendal, and this year over 170 films will be screened over the Festival period. We are also delighted to programme 25 stand-alone feature films, many being World, European or UK premieres. We are thrilled to be welcoming over 180 guests associated with many of the films, attending the Festival to present those films in person.

Rounding off the programme we have over 40 book events, 30+ speaker sessions, 25 outdoor activities and a whole lot of parties!

The programme lists them all - you can’t see everything of course but now many of the events and films will also be available to watch on catch-up on the Kendal Mountain Player

GETTING AROUND

All our venues are accessible by foot or bicycle. You shouldn’t need to walk more than 20 minutes between any venues - most are less than five minutes apart. There is limited parking available especially in the immediate vicinity of the Brewery Arts and Town Hall (Highgate). Rather than setting your Sat Nav for the centre of town (and potentially getting stuck in traffic on Highgate or around the town’s notorious one way system) we recommend you point yourself towards a car park/location a little further away and walk to the Festival venues. More parking information can be found on our website.

Our four-day Festival programme is packed with an incredible number of speakers and films, but there’s no need to worry about sold-out sessions or timetable clashes. We’ll be recording many of the Festival speaker sessions and sharing these, along with a huge programme of films - digitally on the Kendal Mountain Player from 17 November.

Whilst we can’t capture every unique moment that happens at the Festival, we will be recording many of the major sessions and speaker events. These events will be uploaded to the Kendal Mountain Player within 24 hours of being recorded.

Festival films are available on the Kendal Mountain Player from 5pm on 17 November until midnight on 31 December.

Please note that not all films will be available to watch online due to licensing restrictions - these excluded films will be indicated within the film programme listing (subject to change - correct at time of print).

Reuben who has Down’s syndrome, aged 38, had been living in a home providing specialised care for adults with learning disabilities. For months he had been non-verbal, cut off from everyone he loved. In despair, he sent his older brother a text message: “brother. do. you. love. me.”

Go for the big stories with our Stand Alones; we have 26 epic features to choose from. Head to the top of the world with the first female Nepali Sherpa in Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest. Accompany speed climber Quinn Brett as she confronts a journey like no other in An Accidental Life. Join sailor and explorer Matt Knight and his expedition-trained family as they follow a historical map to find very modern treasure in Savage Waters, and meet them on stage after the screening!

Or let us guide you… Our curations of short films chosen to delight, surprise and excite! Sink in for a wider film experience. You can choose from activities and elements you know and love such as Climb, Mountain, Snow and Water, go for themes such as Human Spirit, or Rise Up, or test your boundaries with Outside Thinkers and Outside Artists

As part of our work on supporting filmmakers, we set up the Kendal Mountain Festival and Rab Film Grant in 2021 to commission stories we felt could change the outdoor world. Join us at 4.30pm Saturday at the Buff Bothy Stage when we will launch last year’s winning film We Are Nature by Jaha Browne and Olivia Martin-Maguire, and announce the recipients of this year’s £10k film grant from our wonderful shortlist of filmmakers.

And finally, the most important element of film at the Festival: the Awards! Who will you be rooting for? Join us at 6pm at the Buff Bothy Stage on Saturday in the Basecamp, when our esteemed Jury will reveal their decisions for the 11 Prizes. Jonathan Hourigan was educated at University College Oxford and the National Film and Television School. He has directed a feature film and short films, has written a number of screenplays, is a script consultant and film educator. He is currently Course Leader MA Screenwriting and Head of Screenwriting at London Film School.

MENNA PRITCHARD

Menna is co-owner of Everyfield Films - a live sport and documentary production house, creating content for leading broadcasters. She works as both a director and camera operator, as well as editor and colourist. She is an outdoor educator and passionate advocate of nature connection. She was winner of People’s Choice at Kendal 21.

ANNA TAYLOR

Lakes local Anna Taylor has carved out a reputation; for boldness, with three E8s under her belt; for persistence, playing a big part in the successful Roraima expedition in 2019; and for human-powered adventures such as her recent completion of the 100 ‘Mountain Rock’ climbs, linking them by biking, running and hiking.

Established in 1983 to commemorate the lives of Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker, the Boardman Tasker Charitable Trust celebrates their legacy by awarding the annual Award for Mountain Literature.

On 17 May 1982 Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker were last seen on Mount Everest attempting to traverse The Pinnacles on the unclimbed North East Ridge at around 8250 metres. Their deaths marked the end of their contribution to a remarkable era in British mountaineering.

The winner of the Boardman Tasker Award is a book that Pete and Joe would be proud of being associated with. This years judges are Natalie Berry and Matt Fry, Chair of judges is Marni Jackson.

The award ceremony will contain readings from the authors and they will be in conversation with presenter and legendary mountaineer Stephen Venables.

KIERAN CUNNINGHAM CLIMBING THE WALLS

A highly engaging, often humorous account of a dedicated climber who is forced to spend the pandemic in lockdown, in Italy, mostly NOT climbing—and the consequences for his mental health. A reminder of why mountains matter.

ANNA FLEMING TIME ON ROCK

A gorgeously written, elegant and sensual account of the intimate relationship between climber and rock, whether it’s the gritstone of the Peak District or the granite of the Cairngorms. A peripatetic meditation on how “we shape the rock and the rock shapes us”.

BRIAN HALL HIGH RISK

Brian Hall grew up with the radical climbers who would come to define a wild and glorious chapter of Himalayan mountaineering in the late nineteen seventies and eighties. He partied with them, climbed with them, and grieved many of the eleven unforgettable climbers portrayed in his book. High Risk takes the reader right to the heart and soul of the golden age of UK climbing.

ROBERT CHARLES LEE THROUGH DANGEROUS DOORS

Robert Charles Lee is a professional risk scientist who likes to test his own limits, in life, love and in the mountains, climbing rock and ice. He doesn’t play safe with his writing either, offering readers his unfiltered, sometimes jaw-dropping account of what it means to take risks, and survive.

HELEN MORT A LINE ABOVE THE SKY

One of Britain’s best young poets draws a line between the risks and terrors of motherhood and an untethered life in the mountains. Shadowing the life of Alison Hargreaves, the pioneering UK climber who did not give up alpinism when she became a mother, Helen Mort brilliantly explores the visceral education that is part of climbing mountains, and giving birth.

PAUL PRITCHARD THE MOUNTAIN PATH

The author of Deep Play has gone even deeper in this investigation into the spiritual rewards of a life in the mountains. After Paul was almost killed by a falling rock while climbing a sea stack in Tasmania, he had to push through new physical limitations to philosophical insights that changed his life. A beautifully written, devastatingly honest account of choosing to live.

Marni has been a faculty editor for the Banff Centre’s Mountain and Wilderness Writing program since this unique residency was created fifteen years ago. A number of books that began as early drafts in the peace and solitude of the MWW program went on to become finalists—or winners—of the Boardman Tasker award. So she is delighted to be involved this year in celebrating the literary achievements of some of the climbers, explorers, journalists and adventurers she’s encountered during her years in Banff.

NATALIE BERRY

Natalie is Editor-in-Chief of UKClimbing.com, the world’s busiest climbing and mountaineering website. She has been climbing for over 20 years, is a former GB Climbing Team member and enjoys a variety of climbing disciplines. She is also a freelance writer with work published in various outdoor and adventure publications. Natalie has also translated mountaineering and climbing books for Vertebrate Publishing. In 2016, she was the recipient of the Scottish Youth Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture.

Matthew has worked in non-fiction publishing for over 20 years and is currently Director of International Sales at Quarto Books.

As part of Joe Tasker’s extended family, he grew up with a somewhat inevitable passion for mountaineering literature and has fond memories of attending previous Boardman Tasker award ceremonies as a child. He has been fortunate to travel to many crags and mountains in the UK, Europe and beyond as part of his work and is delighted to be able to participate in the judging of this prestigious prize.

EVEREST 1982 FORTY YEARS ON

It is now forty years since the 1982 British Everest Expedition set out to climb the North East Ridge of the mountain. It followed on from the successful ascent of Kongur the year before and the team included three climbers from that ascent: Chris Bonington, Pete Boardman and Joe Tasker. In addition the team included Dick Renshaw and two support climbers, Dr Charles Clarke and Adrian Gordon. Chris Bonington takes up the story:

“There is a sense of history about the northern side of the mountain. This was the scene of the many pre-war attempts from the north col and of Mallory and Irvine’s celebrated last climb when, after they were last seen moving up into the clouds at 28,000ft/8,500 metres, they might just have reached the top. The mountain was eventually climbed from this side in 1960 by the Chinese who initially tried the north-east ridge but eventually used the north col route.

“This joins the north-east ridge at the 8,000 metre level and, in 1982, the complete ridge was one of the most obvious remaining challenges on the mountain. We felt that it could be climbed by a small team and without using oxygen. It was exposed to the wind, had great length, there was a series of difficult pinnacles barring the way to the traditional route, and then there was the upper section that had confounded all the pre-war teams ---- a combination of difficulties that made it a very serious challenge, the key factor being the debilitating length of time that a small team would need to spend at high altitude. Nevertheless, after Kongur we were very confident, and while I had private doubts about my own ability to press on to the top without oxygen, I wanted to be part of such a challenging enterprise, and was fully prepared to drop back in support if I weakened.

“Tibet had been open to foreigners for two years when we arrived at Lhasa. Although many dreary modern buildings had been erected and the city was surrounded by army camps, it still had a special magic of its own. Over 2,000 monasteries had been destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, many of the monks had been imprisoned and all forms of religious expression had been prohibited. A few of the major monasteries had been spared and some monks had been allowed back but it was a tiny proportion of those that had been there before. Originally there had been 11,000 monks in the Drepung Monastery and now there were only a few hundred. The Chinese seemed to regard these places as useful tourist attractions and money earners, but the Tibetans hold them in awe as places of worship, queuing to visit them in their hundreds. There was an extraordinary feeling of devoutness, that Tibetan Buddhism was still very much alive.

“We moved on to Xigaze, Tibet’s second city. Here the monks of the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery were busy preparing for a religious festival. We then went to Xegur from where trucks took us to the Everest Base Camp. This slow approach to the mountain was essential to help us to acclimatise. We established Advanced Base Camp at 20,342 feet (6,200 metres) on the East Rongbuk Glacier on 4 April.

In biting cold with a penetrating wind we pushed the route forward, establishing three snow hole camps, the highest at 25,755 feet (7,850 metres) just below the pinnacles that were clearly going to be the crux of the route. The climbing to that point was not difficult, but the length of the ridge, the altitude, the remorseless wind and the lack of fixed rope all combined to make it a gruelling experience.

“The plan was to get the route established to the top of the first pinnacle as a jumping off point for an alpine-style dash for the summit. While fixing rope up to this point Dick Renshaw suffered a mild stroke, brought on by the effects of altitude, and we were forced to withdraw to Base at a critical stage. Dick left for home and I too realised I didn’t have the strength to return for the final climb. Thus the depleted team of Pete Boardman and Joe Tasker set out on the 15th May to attempt to cross the pinnacles. They made their last radio call on the evening of 16th May. We watched their progress over the pinnacles throughout the following day and at 9pm saw them for the last time, passing out of sight behind the second pinnacle. The following day Adrian, Gordon and I climbed up to the north col in a prearranged plan to support Pete and Joe on their descent.

“We waited on the north col, and with no more sightings of the climbers, it was clear that something had gone wrong. After four days we descended and later studied the Kangshung face for clues but saw nothing. What happened remains a mystery; they may have slipped and fallen, or succumbed to exhaustion during a bivouac.”

Once Chris, Charlie and Adrian had sensed that there was something wrong, it must have been an agonising time for them as it became increasingly obvious that Pete and Joe were not returning. There was a huge search including a long drive to the Kharta Valley but nothing was found. Charlie chose a large slate near the 1924 Memorial and chiselled a simple epitaph. They placed the tablet and stood silently, tearful in the wind. Next day they left to take the tragic news home.

Charlie Clarke later wrote “I believe that with the mysteries of our personalities, our curious drives and our self-appointed goals, we could not have turned down this opportunity for fulfilment without denying ourselves a glimpse of the very meaning of existence. In time I expect we shall do the same again and be lured back perhaps by another Goddess Mother of the World.”

Writing about Pete and Joe, Charlie described his own sadness: “I was washed over by different waves of emotion. I fought with pain because I loved them. They were the personification of what I once wanted to be…..”. Towards the end of that year Hilary Boardman, Pete’s wife, and Maria Coffey, Joe’s partner, travelled to Everest. They were two strong women and decided to try, in some way to feel that they were with Pete and Joe one last time. Maria wrote: “And as we began the drive to the northern side of Chomolungma I was calm, almost happy. Two eagles hovered high above us on the air currents. Joe and Pete, I thought, watching us leave. It was a fine place to spend eternity.”

Samantha’s work depicts the natural landscapes from which modern lifestyles are increasingly disconnected. Her work aims to share the positive power of nature on the human spirit and soul. She wants to reconnect us to nature and in turn promote us to conserve and respect the wilderness.

Driven by a lifelong passion for nature, she frequently travels to natural environments to inform her work, creating both in the studio and outdoors in the field.

Cumbria’s coast has a rich and fascinating history. The images in this collection, from Silverdale in the south to the Solway Firth in the north, form a photographic essay of this unique coast by highlighting places and events of historical note and importance.

Graham Whitwham was a keen landscape photographer who, for most of his adult life, lived and worked in South Cumbria. This collection of pinhole photographs exploring the Cumbrian coast is taken from “Sea to the West” which was published shortly before his death in 2021.

The exhibition will run from the 14 November to 5 December.

The gallery is open Wednesday – Saturday, 12 – 5pm.

A touching tribute from a son to his father, from one great artist to another. The exhibition focuses on the early life and work of William Heaton Cooper, and its curator is his son, Julian Cooper, Britain’s foremost living mountain painter, who says “We know that William’s work is loved and appreciated by people who love the Lake District, and especially the mountains of the Lakes. But we think they will be surprised and intrigued by these earlier works.”

Art remains an integral part of Kendal Mountain Festival and we have worked closely with Brewery Arts to curate a diverse range of artwork from talented local and national artists. WHAT IS OUTO?

Founded in 2021, as a response to systemic racism, anti-Asian sentiment and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, Opening Up The Outdoors (OUTO) is a not-for-profit initiative that focuses on the continued inclusion, education, and enjoyment of outdoor spaces by people of the global majority. We envision an outdoor community and industry that is truly diverse, equitable, anti-racist and accessible to everyone.

It was created from the desire of journalist and filmmaker Keme Nzerem and producer/director Phil Young to ensure that everyone, regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual identity or physical ability is welcomed and included when they step outside.

Through initiatives such as the OUTO Changemaker Programme and Online Allyship Commitment, the group works to remove barriers to the outdoors by educating and supporting those interested building a more diverse, equitable and anti-racist outdoor community.

Our Basecamp Village is a festival on it own! Back after a succesful move to Abbot Hall Park - it is even bigger for 2022. Free for all!

Crafted out of reclaimed wood and dressed with prayer flags; our village is the social hub of our Festival. In late Summer 2022, we travelled to North America for the first time – covering multiple cities with over 100 shows screened to enthralled new audiences. This new adventure will continue in 2023.

MONTANE SECRET SESSIONS TOUR 2023

Question: which events at Kendal Mountain Festival are always first to sell out?

Answer: the Montane Secret Sessions. It’s not just because these are smaller, more intimate events; it’s the mystery, the fact that you don’t know where the event is being held, and which outdoor superhero you might find yourself sitting next to. So that set us thinking. What if we were to extend the Secret Session concept, and take it on the road? A limited number of events in small, quirky venues where you buy your ticket, but have absolutely no idea who you’re going to see. Sounds intriguing, right?

The Montane Secret Session Tour kicks off in February 2023 with five dates. You’ll love the venues, and you’ll love the speakers… but we’re not telling you who!

STICKLEBARN EVENTS 2023

Following a popular first series, our Afternoon Family Films and our Film and Dinner Evenings at Sticklebarn in the Langdales are back!

We’ve joined forces with the National Trust to create a series of bespoke evenings with a collection of inspiring films carefully chosen by the Kendal Mountain team and a delicious dinner provided by the amazing Sticklebarn.

Hosted by one of our wonderful presenters who will guide you through the films and give you personal insights into the explorers, adventurers and storytellers they feature.

The themes for the evening films will be:
