Is Nasa Ready? She is! are you next? Juliette Goff plans to be among those scientists and engineers who will take us to outer space and alien worlds one day. She is preparing for when that happens while in high school, at Francis Tuttle’s Pre-Engineering Academy, focused both on the hands-on and academic learning toward a future with a university-level engineering degree. “I first learned about Francis Tuttle when I was in middle school and got to come to Summer Quest. The classes were small and we got to create and test some really cool stuff. I did not even realize I was using math and science because I was having fun,” Juliette said.

10

“The Pre-Engineering Academy gave me life skills, study skills, and it is helping me prepare for college. Something I didn’t expect to learn was public speaking and how to make presentations with little notice to people I had never met before. There are lots of other opportunities, with clubs, student organizations, enrichment and leadership programs, which have all helped me grow.” “The teachers are really dedicated and they have a lot of knowledge, so they help us understand and they take a personal interest in us being better.” Juliette’s interest in space exploration stems from an early fascination with

Juliette Goff

astronomy and astrophysics, and working with her mechanical engineer father. She is a member of an “Unmanned Aerial Vehicle” (UAV) team that works with aerospace engineering professors and students at Oklahoma State University. Among other lofty goals, she “…would like to get a master’s degree from Georgia Tech University, and eventually work for NASA, SpaceX or the ESA (European Space Agency), or other large space-related organization, so college is important.”

“The Pre-Engineering Academy gave me life skills, study skills, and it is helping me prepare for college.”

Best Decision I’ve Made! Danielle Baizan says that she has thought about being in law enforcement all her life, and when she learned that she could come to Francis Tuttle in high school and take the criminal justice program, she was all in! “The environment is a lot different from high school. Everybody in my class has similar interests, so while it was not easy and we were always learning something new, it is so much fun. We became like a family and learned lots of little things from each other, too, like staying disciplined and organized in how I do things every day, the importance of being on time, what wearing a uniform represents to others, and lots more.”

22

“Being at Francis Tuttle helped me realize that I could succeed in anything I want to do if I stayed focused and put in the work. Our teacher has a really good background in law enforcement, and he cares a lot about us learning the proper way to do things. He is so helpful, and will even help you with things outside of school—he’s just a phone call away to help.” When asked what she would tell students who are thinking about Francis Tuttle, she replied, “We heard a lot from our teacher that life is about choices and I would tell people to choose to

Code with the Best Taylor Kennedy started Francis Tuttle’s programming and software development program as a Putnam City North senior, and knew from the start that he had found his niche. Programming, or coding, is a valuable skill for many careers and will be even more important in the near future. Taylor learned that, as a senior, he would not be able to complete the entire program, but he applied for Francis Tuttle’s Next-Step Scholarship to finish and earn the maximum number of certifications available, creating more opportunity for his career options. Taylor earned first-place at the state BPA student competitions both his first and second years, each time advancing and earning Top Ten honors

30

at Nationals. He said that the competitions against students from all over the nation provided awesome networking with people with similar interests who he will connect with throughout a lifetime of coding. Taylor plans to join the U.S. Air Force, earn a college degree and launch his career in a coding environment. He recommends students consider Francis Tuttle in high school for future career opportunities. “The peer connections, job connections and environment that is so much like a workplace is a fun way to learn job skills,” he said during a recent conversation about what he has gained at Francis Tuttle.

Taylor Kennedy

“I didn’t know anyone when I started, but have made some great friendships with people I know that I will connect with in the coding world later in my career,” he added.

Students with the Thunder on Media day Francis Tuttle Broadcast Video Production students have become an integral part of behind the scenes preparation for the OKC Thunder’s promotional audio, video and photography for the season during the team’s Media Day. Thunder Media Production Producer Bill Hooker was asked to comment on the relationship: The Francis Tuttle student involvement greatly benefits us from a staffing perspective. Having only four full-time people makes it difficult for us to collect player content all in one day, so having them assist helps us fill rooms with lighting, grips, audio, green screen, etc., and have as many cameras as possible to get multiple angles of the players for different videos for use throughout the season, including intros, hype videos, player profiles and messages.

We use Francis Tuttle students because of their professionalism and knowledge of video production, and I believe they learn valuable skills working as a team. Seeing how the production comes together with multiple people always amazes some at first. Being able to take direction and play off of each other’s talents is very big for me. They also learn how to work with athletes in a professional manner. Learning skills in the classroom is one thing, but to put those skills to work in a real world atmosphere is something totally different. It gives students the confidence they will need when they graduate. The instructors (Waleed and Sherri) that I have worked with do such a great job preparing them for not only the technical side that I am looking for, but also the professionalism they demonstrate throughout the day.

It’s very easy to get star struck when you are dealing with someone like Russell Westbrook. The students go into it very much ready to get the job done.” Instructor Waleed Salim echoed some of Hooker’s comments. “Experiences like Thunder Media Day speeds up students’ development as video producers, and allows them to learn from real world scenarios. It’s highly competitive. Each year, there are typically around 50 students who apply for about a dozen positions. Applications are reviewed based primarily on demonstrated professionalism. The industry has the ability to teach skills, but can’t afford to spend time to develop professionalism. Students generally get over the awe of working with professional athletes pretty quickly and afterward, an often-heard comment is “We were just working.”
