Non-Traditional Defined You have to admit, Baylee Tassey does not look like your stereotypical carpenter, but some of her interests may not be what you might think of a for 17-year-old, either. This former cheerleader has more on her plate to achieve, and pursuing non-traditional activities are her forte. Being the only female in her carpentry/cabinetry class, she realizes that she has a unique perspective, and she likes to prove peoples’ perceptions wrong. Baylee has built a bathroom vanity and a clothing rack with a hidden drawer, and was last seen building dressers for her mom’s friend and daughter. “There’s no real drama about being the only girl, because I am here to work,” she com-

10

mented. As class SkillsUSA president, she believes it is important for people to know a trade. “I’ve always been a hands-on learner and chose cabinetry to force myself out of my comfort zone and learn skills I can use all my life.” Baylee also casually mentioned that she intends to serve in the Peace Corps at some point, and she knows that the carpentry skills she has learned will help people, which is one of her key interests. Among other interests, are rock climbing (which she teaches), camping (often by herself), caring for Daxter (her pet hedgehog) and travel. Appearing to be the epitome of a non-traditional student, all measures point to Baylee remaining non-traditional throughout her life. Baylee Tassey

Next year, Baylee plans to attend the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, majoring in business and sociology. Even though she admits knowing nothing about beekeeping, she intends to leverage her carpentry skills by building bee habitats. “I’d like to start a beekeeping club in college,” she replied. Instructor Bryan Kropfinger said “Baylee is focused and a hard worker, and she works well with others,” traits he knows will serve any student well in any industry.

girls in stem Breaking the Accountant tradition with Engineering with a long line of accountants in her family before her, many thought Miranda Almen might follow in their footsteps. But Miranda is making her own path, breaking the tradition to pursue a degree in industrial engineering. It wasn’t a decision she made lightly but, rather, one that has come about through three years of rigorous study and involvement in the Pre-Engineering Academy at Francis Tuttle Technology Center. Miranda is currently a senior at Deer Creek High School and also attends Francis Tuttle’s Pre-Engineering Academy where her passion for math, science, and engineering have been on display since the Fall of her sophomore year. She has relished her role as a female student in a traditionally male-dominated field and has excelled academically, as

14

well as serving as a classroom leader and role model for other females in the Academy. Her involvement in extra-curricular activities are almost too numerous to list but certainly worth mentioning are her membership in both the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society, the Deer Creek Academic Team, the Francis Tuttle Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, Girl Scouts, the Francis Tuttle Chapter of SkillsUSA, Francis Tuttle President’s Club and the Deer Creek Link Crew, in which she serves as a high school Ambassador to welcome new incoming freshmen each fall. In addition to her many activities and school responsibilities, Miranda is currently working on a senior capstone project for the Pre-Engineering Academy. She and fellow classmates Kasee Hayes and Carolina Collins have been conducting research and experiments to develop formulas of natural oils and

essences that, when added to laundry detergent and softener sheets in the laundry will safely make clothing mosquito-repellant. They will reveal the results of their work later this school year. When she graduates this May, Miranda plans to attend either Oklahoma State University or Georgia Tech to pursue a degree in Industrial Engineering. Miranda Almen may have chosen a different career than many other members of her family, but she has enough of that accounting gene to ensure that she does everything necessary to make it add up to a great future as an engineer.

During the Summer following completion of her Francis Tuttle 3D Animation program, Emily Steel reflected on the many things she had learned that might apply to her quest for a bachelor’s degree at the Savanah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savanah, Georgia. Many of her Francis Tuttle credits were allowed for exemption, inspiring Emily to pursue a double major in animation and photography. Emily enrolled in 20 credit hours per quarter—not a schedule for the slackers among us! Emily also spent four months on the SCAD campus in Hong Kong working for a company to create a 3D video for their store. She is a double major in photography and animation, and will graduate in 2018.

22

An average day in her current quarter includes animation courses in the morning, photography in the afternoon, in which she arranges and directs photo shoots, followed by an evening online course. Emily was also able to complete one quarter at the SCAD campus in Hong Kong, for which her internship team worked on a project for a major cosmetic company to produce an animated video for projection onto a series of LED panels to provide potential customers a realistic portrayal of what they were about to experience once their appointment began deeper in the retail outlet. When Emily applied for SCAD, the student acceptance rate was very low, but her Francis Tuttle experience helped her earn admittance. Emily comEmily Steel

mented that her experience at Francis Tuttle helped her focus on what she wanted to do for a fulfilling career. Her advice to students considering FT is “Try it! Move out of your comfort zone and explore.” Her mom helped her make the decision to pursue what she enjoys now, after being highlyfocused on math and science in high school. She said that her experience at FT was mid-way between high school and what she thought college would be like. She met new, yet long-lasting friends who she is certain she would not have met if not for attending FT. Her career goals include changing perspectives, along with helping non-profit organizations “Get the message through without words…”

student internship: Is it for you? Former Graphic Communications student Colton Hawkins spent the last few weeks of his program interning with Francis Tuttle’s marketing department and wanted to share a few tips about learning at Francis Tuttle and about the value of an internship: I loved my graphic communications program from the first day of class! I was a little nervous about meeting a bunch of new people before I started, but the classroom has a great vibe and most everybody was in the same boat, without much experience in what we were getting into, so it worked out really well.

26

Even though I didn’t know anything about graphic communications, I got very comfortable working with a lot of software that professionals use in the industry and before I knew it, it was like working at a job that I loved, while I learned, so it was kind of like a twoyear internship. One of my favorite things was the classroom environment itself—we learned so many different software packages and had everything we needed for a graphic communications job.

Colton Hawkins

Another favorite was the internship I was able to get—I think it’s a great idea for everyone to have one, to get a feel for the work environment and working on projects with tight deadlines. I would tell people that are thinking about going to not be nervous, because there will be others just like you and you’ll find that you fit right in. I felt prepared to go out and find a great-paying career in the industry I trained for.

Hooked! When Edmond North Junior and Francis Tuttle Pre-Nursing student Ryan Watts participated in the Pre-Nursing extravaganza before enrolling, he was hooked! “I thought I would be right for healthcare because I am a huge people person and love helping people, and also because I have nurses in my family already,” Ryan commented, “but the facilities and equipment were real world, like a real hospital or doctor’s office or patient room!” He wasn’t sure if he would know anybody, but he made friends right away from different schools, and said that everybody in his class gets along well. “I was slightly frightened on the first day of class, but that only lasted for the first few minutes because instructors made us very comfortable and got us connected with each other.”

30

“The program was definitely more than I expected. I’ve learned so much from other things we have done—I will be competing in Parliamentary Procedure at the state HOSA competition. I also became a HOSA officer and earned a trip to nationals in Orlando. It offers lots of opportunities to be successful, both in the skills I am learning and becoming a leader.” Ryan also said that his favorite thing was unexpected—all students are treated like adults and given responsibility—he hadn’t experienced that before and it made him feel respected. “I tell friends they should attend Francis Tuttle and to think about what they would like to do.”

Ryan Watts

After Francis Tuttle and graduation, Ryan wants to be a Registered Nurse or a CRNA, with additional education at OU or UCO. “It’s not easy, but it really prepares you for the job and gives you satisfaction that you are learning things you can definitely use. It will get your foot in the door to a career in healthcare or medicine. I’ve found that Francis Tuttle has a very good reputation, so telling a possible employer that you went here really helps! Just from what I have learned so far, I feel really ready for a career.”

Happy Place Morgan Cox looks forward to one day operating her own food truck, then perhaps a small café or sit down restaurant, offering menu items such as cupcakes, cookies, scones, chocolates, and succulent meats. Morgan knew that to break into the fast-paced culinary industry, she had to learn the skills. Enter Francis Tuttle’s School of Culinary Arts. As a student at Western Heights High School, Morgan participated in shadow day and enjoyed meeting current students and speaking with chef instructors. She toured Francis Tuttle and participated in Career Day, which sealed the deal for her to apply.

38

“The first day of class was mostly about connecting with classmates, most of whom had the same, new student anxieties, but that went away quickly and I’ve made some very close friends. Everybody was so welcoming.” The culinary arts program is much more than she thought it would be. “There is cooking, but there are also management, ordering and efficiency skills I can use throughout my life. I truly appreciate the personable touch of the instructors and the support of all employees. Everyone is so encouraging, helping me find job opportunities, and connecting with every individual makes it feel so much like being home.”

Morgan Cox

“My experience at Francis Tuttle led me to a job! During my interview, my hiring manager was impressed that I went to Francis Tuttle and that I wanted to continue learning more about the business, as well as techniques and various cooking styles.” Two big things that Morgan said she will take away from her experience learning about the culinary industry are: 1) Everyone should know how to cook; and 2) “Francis Tuttle is my happy place.”

shadow day Shadow day is one of FT’s favorite holidays! Okay, so it may not be an official holiday but it’s one of our most treasured days; because we get to have you on campus for a classroom tour! You’ll get the opportunity to select which program you’re most interested in and we will guide you to the selected program; where you’ll get to spend time shadowing the classroom and asking current students any question that comes to mind! It’s a glimpse into the near future and helps make decision making a littler easier! Especially if you can’t decide which awesome or exciting class you prefer! Plus, did we mention that you get to spend a half day here during regular school hours and you get delicious PIZZA? Once you’ve taken the tour and you’re interested in a program, at that point you may fill out an application and submit it to your school’s guidance counselor. P.S. We tend to fill classes pretty quickly, so don’t delay!

We’re looking forward to having you as a future 2018/2019 FT student!

patent pending Francis Tuttle Pre-Engineering Academy students have set the bar high for schools around the country. Senior students in the Engineering Design and Development course first identify a problem in society, with the caveat that a possible solution must be determined within the school year. They then conduct research and visit with professional engineers to learn more about the problem and solutions which have already been attempted. Students present their research findings and a working prototype to the public and potential investors near the end of the school year. Several of these projects have been deemed patent-worthy by local patent attorneys, a record 10 in the most recent school year alone.

A few of these include a device to assist firefighters to rapidly extinguish large haybale fires (normally requiring a significant amount of time and water), a swimming pool ripple detector (designed to alert loved ones when a slight tremor of water is detected), a collapsible tornado shelter (which passed rigorous FEMA testing), and a football helmet design (which has shown to reduce concussion g-forces by as much as 70 percent). Many other solutions have earned a distinction of being patent-worthy, while some presentations are clear that theirs is an idea which may be ruled out and not worth pursuing further. It ends up being a win, either way, as students learn how real engineers conduct their life’s work.

The school’s Engineering Design and Development course instructor Jimmy Bollman believes some of these school projects will one day turn budding entrepreneurs into millionaires. “We are preparing high school students to enter a university-level engineering degree program, but we also work on research, documentation and presentation skills— things they will need to solve problems and be successful throughout their careers, and possibly, to bring products to market,” says Bollman.

job interview If you’re looking for a summer job or trying to land a job in your desired career field, below are some great tips on how to interview successfully! So much of conducting a great interview comes with practice, confidence and a will to always learn and grow. If you can possess those qualities, you will be a sure fire success. Do dress the part for the job – dress for success. Do arrive about 10 minutes early. Late arrival for a job interview is never excusable. If you are running late, do phone the company. Do greet the receptionist or assistant with courtesy and respect. This situation is where you make your first impression with the employer. Do fill out the job application neatly, completely, and accurately. Do shake hands firmly. Don’t have a limp or clammy handshake. Do wait until you are offered a chair before sitting. And do remember body language and posture: sit upright and look alert and interested at all times. Don’t fidget or slouch. Do make sure that your good points come across to the interviewer in a factual, sincere manner. Don’t ever lie. Answer questions truthfully, frankly and succinctly. And don’t over-answer questions. Don’t chew gum during the interview. Do make good eye contact with your interviewer(s).Do show enthusiasm in the position and the company. Do ask intelligent questions about the job, company, or industry. Don’t ever not ask any questions — it shows a lack of interest. Do close the interview by telling the interviewer(s) that you want the job and asking about the next step in the process.

Congratulations to our 1st and 2nd place DECA State Winners! A special thank you to instructor, Natalie Jordan, for getting the students ready for competition. Way to go!! Prospective students had a great day learning about our Biosciences & Medicine Academy and our Computer Science Academy! We always love to hear from former students about how their Francis Tuttle program prepared them for their next step, whether that is college or directly to the workforce. Pre-Engineering Academy graduate, Darren Midkiff, who is currently a college sophomore had this to say…”I just finished a CAD drawing for my internship at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. I’m technically in a computer engineering position, but the multidisciplinary skills taught to me at FT are coming in handy!” We are so glad that the skills Darren learned in the Academy are serving him well. Keep up the great work Darren! Maritza Deloera, a second year Reno Criminal Justice student from Putnam City with a 4.0 GPA, has been selected as one of two Francis Tuttle students nominated for the University of Central Oklahoma Leadership scholarship. Congratulations Maritza! Our Cosmetology students helped several Putnam city students get ready for the Night to Shine Event by providing hair and nail services. The event, sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, is a prom night experience for people with special needs. Thank you to all the FT instructors and students that helped to make this night so special for the PC students! Gearing up for competition season for many Francis Tuttle students. The Reno Automotive program is getting a jump start this year by holding their own skills competition to determine the students that will participate in the upcoming SkillsUSA Regional contest. Chef Ana with FCCLA National Gold medal winners!!! Congratulations, Tyler Barnett, Automotive Service Technology student, for winning gold at the State SkillsUSA Competition!

pixlfest A conference for creative students from across Oklahoma to come together and share their passion and desire to shape the future. Francis Tuttle Technology Center students wanted to create a day packed full of information and could not think of a better way to do that than invite Oklahoma professionals to share their expertise with students. In 2011 the Francis Tuttle Web Design and Development programs from the Edmond Memorial High School, Rockwell and online campuses hosted the first conference, then called “Webfest.”

60

The first conference included more than 100 students, and was inspired by the work of Professor Zac Gordon and his DaBrook students at Springbook High School in Maryland. With a successful conference under our belt, Webfest was broadened in 2012, and teamed up with the 3D Animation and Visual Effects program to add an animation track. Since Webfest was no longer the right name, we re-branded it Pixlfest. In 2013, we teamed with the Audio and Video Production program to offer another track.

In 2014, we expanded yet again with the Business Marketing and Management, and Graphic Communications programs to get even more students involved and create a dynamic conference packed with multiple disciplines. Since that day in 2011, students have come together to spend the day learning tips and tricks to implement into their work and networking with other creative students and industry professionals. We couldn’t think of anywhere else in Oklahoma where students could spend an entire day talking geeky and fitting in!

Superintendent’s Leadership Academy In addition to professional training in their selected industry, Francis Tuttle students have an opportunity to experience an extensive program of leadership development in the Superintendent’s Leadership Academy. The SLA provides students with experiences to accelerate their career paths years beyond the completion of their instructional program. Instructors are asked to identify students who exhibit leadership qualities, and who have demonstrated extraordinary skills in the labs, student organizations and classrooms at Francis Tuttle. Each student applicant then undergoes an extensive review and interview process for the year’s program.

The Academy features self-assessment of personal leadership styles to help recognize how best to utilize traits, leadership skills training specific to style, teambuilding, personal and professional goal development, job readiness workshops, as well as lessons in public speaking and presentation skills. Students also participate in a community service project alongside participants in Leadership Francis Tuttle, the employee leadership development program.
