Berganzoa 2120 “Eliza, you coming?” I said. “I’m just getting my shoes, where do you want to walk?” She replied. “The national park to the place where Dad died for an hour.” “Ok I’m comi…” Her head cracked against the floor “Eliza? Eliza where are you” “Yes, I need paramedics at 78 Seaview Lane Berganzoa…. Ok thank you.”

1 hour later Berganzoa Hospital “Can I sit down?” The doctor askes me as she walks towards me from Eliza’s room. “Yes.” “I am sorry to inform you that your Eliza is dead” My head drops into my hands and I can feel wet tears rolling down my cheeks. “Why did that have to happen to me?” I ask myself as the doctor puts a hand on my shoulder. “Would it be ok if you could inform her family?” The doctor says to me. “I guess I could.” I force myself to say even though I don’t want to face them after what happened to me. “Ok I better get a Soul Cube to transfer her memories into, if that’s what you want. If you would like to know how they work I can get the senior technician.” “That’s ok,” is all I can manage as I get ready to see her for the last time.

As I walk in I see her on the bed, her face more pale than usual and the blood dried on her forehead. ‘Why again did it have to happen to me.’ I think. Maybe I did something to upset fate. I kissed her hand and walked out of the room. My first and last kiss with her and I never got a proper one. With tears, I picked up my phone and started texting her family.

Driving to Eliza’s mum house on the other side of the city in peak hour traffic took an age and with the idiot drivers it felt like Paris. Not that I’ll ever be proposing to Eliza there. Yes I did want to marry her. She was amazing. Bet now that’s never going to happen.

Opening the door her mum says, “Come in. Would you like some tea?” “No thanks,” I reply. “It’s about Eliza” “I figured that much, do you need advice?” “It’s a little bit more serious than that.” I say sitting down on the couch. “Is she ok?” “She passed away after falling down the stairs.” “Oh,” She started sobbing, “she was so young” “Yeah,” the sobbing was infectious. I sat next to her, trying to comfort her. “Does she have a soul cube?” She asked once her sobbing had subsided. “Yes she does, but we don’t need to pay for it,” “Why.” “Because I invented them.”

After Soul Cube has been fully calibrated, one month later. “Hey,” I say “The Soul Cube does work. That’s good news for both of us.” “I guess I should thank you for your amazing mind.” She replied “I should be thanking you for being there for me when I was funding the project.” “Well thank you for keeping my mind alive” “I would do anything for you.” “Same even though now I’m only a mind and not a body.”
