WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES

EAST MEETS WEST

CUDDLE UP CLOSE

The expansive versatility of the Mex-Hi sofa system is made possible by a series of individual elements – armrests, backrests and seats that can be seamlessly combined to create a complete seating landscape. An evolution of Cassina’s bestseller, Mex Cube, the new modular and dynamic Mex-Hi has been given a contemporary touch by its designer Piero Lissoni to address emerging spatial needs. Cushions are upholstered from 100% recycled fibre derived from plastics recovered from the ocean.

The inspiration behind the Daiki armchair designed by Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan is a deep appreciation for Japanese culture while evoking American MidCentury aesthetics via bold clean lines and balanced proportions. Its deep seat is cradled within a curved shell which has two elements joined at a 45° angle, resulting in a backrest with a gentle incline to ensure maximum comfort. The entire piece sits solidly on a metal frame with legs in Black-Nickel finish.

Sitting in a Rolf Benz 594 is akin to getting a reassuring hug. A brainchild of Sebastian Herkner, everything about this impeccable armchair induces a pleasant feeling, thanks to its gentle curves, perfectly balanced rounded back as well as its firm upholstered seat shell and soft seat cushion. Roomy enough for snuggling up in either one of its two curved corners, this cosy armchair rests on a choice of wooden or metal frame.

With generous proportions and over 561 upholstery fabric choices, Sofa So Good is an endlessly versatile modular sofa system, fitting perfectly into any interior whether your taste leans towards classic or contemporary. This sofa system offers eight different upholstered modules as well as two tables and three shelves. Six different wood finishes are also available for the tables and shelves to make room for more design possibilities.

Giorgetti reinterprets the classic rocking horse into an abstract accent chair named Clop, which features a saddle-like seat made from birch plywood. Playful all the way, this ultra-modern rocking piece created by design duo Dominic Siguang Ma and Feng Wei emphasizes simple lines and can be complemented with an upholstered seat pad in the centre. Clop also offers a dual sitting experience: when you turn it sideways, the rocking chair becomes an armchair – either way, comfort is guaranteed.

With its characteristic T-shaped back, Drop 20 by Roberto Lazzeroni merges graceful lines and restrained proportions that make it ideal for both private spaces and public lounges. Offering comfortable support, the T-shaped back curves around the back and meets with the seat in a continuous upholstered form complemented by grosgrain piping that is available in different colours. BRIGHT AND BREEZY

BUNDLE OF JOY

LET IT ALL IN

The Mediterranean coastline serves as the inspiration for the Panarea chair by CMP Design for Pedrali. With its vibrant colour and breezy features, Panarea is characterized by its handwoven polypropylene back that wraps around a Ø 20 mm steel tube frame. Comfortable and airy, the seat cushion is upholstered in fabric made from the same yarn used for the woven element. Available in a selection of sunny colours, it’s the ideal chair for sea-facing outdoor terraces.

What happens when you capture the happiness of outdoor life in physical form? For Patricia Urquiola, the Trampoline Day Bed happened. As its name suggests, this day bed is inspired by the little trampolines found in many home gardens in Greenland. Trampoline’s striking yet soft, playful forms comprising a set of three backrest cushions and two types of additional cushions sit on a stainless steel structure to create happy islands of rest and relaxation.

Sebastian Herkner and Fritz Hansen have teamed up again to present the Let™ Lounge Chair, an elegant armchair imbued with Herkner’s signature style and Fritz Hansen’s high quality craftsmanship. Featuring a sensual form, the chair’s armrest is designed like a pair of spreading wings in an inviting manner while its curved back offers a cradle-like seating experience. A chair that fits both commercial spaces and residences, Let™ comes fully upholstered in fabric or leather.

MAKING NEW WAVES

V MARKS THE SPOT

IN FULL BLOOM

Poised and quietly graceful, Kiri is a tribute to the traditional Japanese cabinet made of Kiri wood that was gifted as a dowry in the past. Taking cue from its original design, Giorgetti has given it a new purpose as a precious bar cabinet that comes complete with a contemporary design composed of vertical strips in Canaletto walnut. When the cabinet is fully closed, the strips form a continuous wave-like appearance which beautifully exemplifies Giorgetti’s intricate craftsmanship.

You would recognise a Quincy bench anywhere. Whether it is covered in fabric or leather, its iconic stitched “V” chevron motifs that run across the rectangular seating piece attracts the eye immediately. Designed for a variety of seating landscapes, Quincy is available in three sizes and sits stoutly on brushed aluminium blades with varnished Brandy colour finish – an interesting contrast of materials that complement the textural quality of the bench at the same time.

The natural beauty of water lilies is personified in the Nenou collection, which is named after ‘nenúfar’, the Spanish name for these alluring flowers. Mimicking how water lilies easily group together in a pond, Nenou’s leaf-shaped elements which include upholstered easy chairs, stools and pouffes are designed to allow an endless variety of seating formations in an open space. Leaf-inspired details like circumferential piping and central depressions are also incorporated to the seats for a comfortable fit.

HAPPY TOGETHER

THE GREAT GATSBY

A BLOCKBUSTER HIT

The bright colours and sinuous, playful shape of the Trampoline sofa perfectly depict Patricia Urquiola’s vision of a happy outdoor lifestyle. The collection features a two-seater sofa and three versatile modules comprising a small and large terminal and a central element that cater to a variety of cosy compositions. Trampoline also champions an eco-friendly approach using innovative and sustainable materials, including panels made of 100% recyclable plastic and cushions padded with 100% recycled fibre.

The Gatsby armchair exquisitely unites couture craftsmanship with high-tech materials. While it has a rigid structure to evoke a distinguished aesthetic, the armchair’s seat cushion features goose down material to create an ergonomically comfortable seating piece. Set in metal, the base of the chair offers a choice of satin, chrome, black chrome, burnished or champagne finish to complement different stylistic specifications. Gatsby’s non-removable upholstery is available in a variety of fabrics and leather versions.

Block is a solid wood coffee table with a bold personality, designed with nuances of Brutalist architecture that gives this table a sculptural appearance. Its base stands out, either in the shape of an “L” or an upside-down “T”, supporting a solid block of Moka lacquered oak wood with smooth edges. The shiny lacquered finish offers a palette of colours ranging from white to rust and Moka while the table comes in two different heights.

LIGHT YEARS AWAY

FANCY A DRINK?

RAISE THE BAR

Tinkering inspires a sense of wonder with its coated stainless steel and brass frame punctuated with a rhythmic composition of LED lights. Designed by Joost van Bleiswijk for Moooi, this suspension lamp creates a futuristic feel wherever it is placed. Powered through the Electrosandwich® technology by Marcel Wanders, Tinkering’s light caps are adjustable individually. The lamp is available in two sizes, Tinkering 85, which is 85 cm long, and Tinkering 140, which spans 140 cm horizontally.

Like the perfect host, this quaint bar cabinet by Adam D. Tihany is ever ready to offer you a drink from its bar column. Evocative of home cocktail soirees in 1950s New York, Host features a lighter and more versatile edge with the addition of an adjacent trolley. It is perfect for contemporary environments as its streamlined look, and sleek mobility turns this bar furniture into a personal home accoutrement of sorts to complement convivial moments.

Something about the Harri Bar Chair is very intriguing, and it’s easy to see why. With its appealing appearance, Harri puts a modern spin on the 50’s classic bar stool while retaining a retro-inspired outlook. One of Harri’s stand-out feature is its graphical Y-shaped brace of the tubular frame which provides a striking contrast to its firm seat designed with a pronounced recess. The bar chair is also upholstered in eco-friendly coconut fibres and sisal belting.

he sunlit sandy beach and lush forest landscape at Western Australia’s Margaret River Region, Yallingup serve as the perfect backdrop for the iconic Smiths Beach Resort. Situated within a National Park, this resort has been recently refurbished with a refreshed contemporary theme by Mobilia, an Australian company specialising in highend furniture. Taking on an understated and elegant theme, the new look of this luxurious beachside resort brings together a tasteful palette of locally made custom pieces as well as exquisite furnishing from world-renowned designer brands including Kettal, Marset, Joquer, Fritz Hansen, Vondom and Inclass. As the architecturally designed resort is nestled in between the oceanfront and a natural reserve, the furnishing concept leans towards a sophisticated interplay of contrasting tones inspired by these two different environments. This is achieved using a careful selection of modern furnishings where furniture with clean lines and warm earthy tones of oak and grey blend in perfect harmony with small touches of blue and green hues to reflect the two contrasting landscapes.

TOP: Set within a National Park, this exemplary resort has been refurbished with a refreshed contemporary theme inspired by its natural surroundings.

BOTTOM: As one of the finest luxury holiday resorts at Yallingup, the resort presents guests with ideal leisure facilities, elegant accommodations, and memorable dining experiences.

“WE HAD TO SELECT FURNITURE THAT WAS EXTREMELY HARDWEARING AND OF A VERY HIGH COMMERCIAL STANDARD CONSIDERING THE APPLICATION AND THE EXPOSURE TO THE NATURAL ELEMENTS CONSIDERING THE RESORT’S CLOSE VICINITY TO THE OCEAN AND THE RESERVE.” Salvatore Fazzari, Director of Mobilia

According to Mobilia’s Director Salvatore Fazzari, colours and simple understated forms were important when it came to the choice of furniture. “ We had to select furniture that was extremely hard-wearing and of a very high commercial standards considering the application and the exposure to the natural elements as well as the resort’s close vicinity to the ocean and the reserve,” Fazzari adds. To achieve the desired look and feel for the resort’s semi-outdoor spaces, Kettal collection has been selected as one the key elements to strengthen the luxurious palette while imbuing the stylistic concept with a distinctive aesthetic. For example, at the balcony of one of the suites which looks out to the verdant surroundings, the Kettal Landscape collection by Kettal Studio works hand-in-hand with accent furniture from Kettal Zigzag collection by Emilia Design Studio to create a minimalist yet refined ambience.

“Its rationalist construction seeks to give order, form and structure to the outdoor space, although, in terms of function, it has been designed to give shelter: to shade and cool or protect from the rain and wind,” the designer of Kettal Landscape remarks, exemplifying how this collection impeccably reflects the resort’s natural surroundings in a cohesive manner. At the balcony of another suite, furniture pieces from the Triconfort Riba collection by Kettal Studio set off a cosy yet balmy look with their nature-inspired fibres. “This collection mixes ancestral techniques such as the braiding of natural fibres with aluminium, a material that had its heyday in the fifties. Now, the metal frame replaces traditional wood, while natural fibre has been replaced with a synthetic material in order to provide greater weather resistance,” the designer of the Triconfort Riba collection says.

Kettal outdoor pieces are also paired with Kettal Outdoor Cushions featuring Terrain and Geometrics Fabrics by Doshi Levien to give these spaces a unique design personality that is effortlessly light, yet vibrantly classy. “The resort has long seduced its visitors with the natural beauty that surrounds it, and we were fascinated by the way the resort is nested so delicately between the vegetation and the ocean,” Fazzari says. “We wanted to be respectful to that balance and the purity of the surroundings, compliment the timelessness of the architecture and enhance the experience of the resort by recreating that delicate sense of luxury in a relaxed, natural manner.”

ucked in the heart of Sorpesee, Germany where cultural and scenic attractions abound, Hotel Seegarten beckons with its charming yellow façade distinguishable by striped awnings. Inside, a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere ensues where unique seating landscapes by COR’s Jalis and Elm collections are strategically placed to bring out the hotel’s remarkable interior design. Throughout the hotel, fair-faced concrete and glass surfaces provide transparency while infusing the key spaces with a touch of modernity. At the reception lounge, these ultra-cosy sofas with huge cushions are set atop stone slabs, instantly inviting guests to rest and relax on them.

“Jalis always gives the impression of a few loose cushions lying together,” says Jehs & Laub, designers of the Jalis collection. “Jalis can rest on pedestals, integrate or highlight tables, change levels and incorporate niches and floor recesses. A

s part of their public area refurbishment at the Crowne Plaza in Porto, Portugal’s historic city that extends from the Douro River to the Atlantic Ocean, twenty2degrees was appointed to create a new restaurant and bar. The result was soMos (‘We Are’ in Portuguese) socalled because the ambience of the space was to encourage and stimulate sociality and togetherness. twenty2degrees’ design was loosely inspired by the cuisine – rustic yet refined Mediterranean fare of the highest quality, beautifully served on collections of small plates. The interior space was long, and the designers articulated this with varying seating options and a colour palette that belongs to the Mediterranean, punctuated by glazed screens. Industrial features, such as oversized pendant lights and ironwork were juxtaposed with brightly patterned Portuguese wall plates and warm timber panelling. In a city where people rarely dine in hotel restaurants, soMos Porto soon became packed with local families, groups of friends and local business people, prompting the client to believe that here was the beginning of a group of restaurants that could be equally at home in numerous destinations across Western Europe.

The second restaurant, completed earlier this year, is located in the elegant district of Neuilly-Sur-Seine to the west of central Paris. Once again, twenty2degrees was at the helm for the interior design, bringing through the design signatures established in Porto and combing these with Parisian character. In soMos Neuilly, Calacatta marble clads the servery back and antiqued mirror is integrated into some of the screens to form a reflective backdrop to a display of decorative plates, which this time are French. A specially designed wall covering gives a subtle nod to the work of the famous French architect, Le Corbusier, while the colour palette is more ‘feminine’ than its Portuguese counterpart with powder pink and mid-green accents. By day, soMos Neuilly is flooded with natural light; in the evening, the filament lights provide a golden glow caught in the antiqued mirror. “Our client’s ambition was to create a collection of restaurants that would fit well into any number of European neighbourhoods, each one individually connected with its location while clearly remaining within the family,” says Nick Stoupas, Founding Partner of twenty2degrees. “The two existing restaurants are co-located with Crowne Plaza hotels, however the next restaurant, soMos Côte d’Azure, is being planned for the Miramar Beach Hotel & Spa. Here the familial design language will ensure that the experience is at one with the city restaurants, while the narrative will take on a more bohemian Riviera flavour.”

T

he Dixon is one of the most memorable hotels in London. Housed in an historic Grade ll listed building which was previously a magistrates court, and extended to provide additional accommodation, the hotel combines its formidable past with the vibrancy and cultural diversity of the Tower Bridge district today where sightseers, artists, office workers and local residents rub shoulders all year round. twenty2degrees Design Partnership led the interior design project, from the imposing lobby and the court room itself, now reinvented as the bar, to the restaurant, function rooms and 193 guestrooms, working in collaboration with Consarc Design Group on the listed parts where careful restoration was required.

ALL PHOTOS: A former clerk’s office has been reinvented as an intimate reception area to one side of the main entrance.

The building was originally completed in 1906 by the celebrated, yet enigmatic architect John Dixon Butler from whom the present-day hotel takes its name and it comprised a courtroom, police station and jail cells. Back then, the area around Tower Bridge was a centre of light industry and international trade thanks to the nearby docks; famous artists were occasional residents, there were drinking dens a-plenty and while there was money to be made, poverty and criminality were rife. It was this diverse and colourful canvas that twenty2 degrees inherited when they approached the challenge of balancing history and listed building constraints with the requirements of today’s luxury hotel guests. Joe Stella, Creative Director of twenty2degrees, explains: “We were determined to be respectful to the building but we also had to respond to the fact

that it now has to operate in a completely different way from what was originally intended. First and foremost, we had to think about how modern guests would experience the building and the need create a journey through it.” This journey begins with an imposing lobby, once the court’s processing hall, and a centrally placed grand staircase which sweeps up to parallel galleries. To one side of the lobby, a former clerk’s office has been reinvented as an intimate reception area where a metal-clad table is engraved with an intriguing ensemble of local scenes. The imperiousness of the space is softened by a specially designed carpet inspired by the flow of the River Thames nearby, while certain hallmarks of the design are established. These include the sometimes witty, sometimes solemn, details that connect the past with today, such as artworks incorporating original cell keys and holding benches bearing notes from detainees etched into their surfaces. twenty2degrees also worked with art consultants Peter Millard & Partners to create a vast collection of paintings and illustrations that re-work floral motifs – a nod to the area’s past – into disruptive modern images. The listed courtroom has become the hotel bar, a unique space where the partitions that once separated judge, jury, prosecutor and defendants have been given new purpose in defining a series of nooks. The room flows towards a sunken bar where once the judges sat, now watched over by grainy mugshots of the convicted wearing notices that tell of their crime and punishment around their necks. While the guestrooms are all new and therefore not governed by existing heritage features, twenty2degrees has taken care to carry through some of the aesthetic from the public areas. A panelled wall in each room has been designed with exactly the same profiles as the Edwardian panels in the lobby while the specially designed carpets bear a geometric pattern reminiscent of the ground floor mosaics. “It’s a touch of the original, just not as you’d expect it,” says Joe Stella.

‘Old meets new’ is the theme of the guestrooms. The combination of herringbone parquet in the bedrooms and white marble in the bathrooms is classic. Residential style furnishings in punchy yellow or teal and an abstract ceiling pendant are clearly more modern elements, while fluted glass bedside lights and the reappearance of the three local residents from downstairs anchor the guestrooms within the design narrative. Joe Stella concludes: “It’s about paying respect to the past but it’s about the present too, and all the little points in between that lead us here, as well as the future ahead.”

orking within the footprint of what was previously part of an historic magistrates’ court in one of central London’s most storied districts, twenty2degrees Design Partnership has created not only an all-day restaurant for guests staying in the associated hotel, The Dixon, but a new dining and social hub for local workers and residents. Named Provisioners, to reflect the culinary provenance and modern flavours of its cuisine, the restaurant comprises the main dining space, a bar area and a semi-private area for small business and social gatherings, and can be accessed either directly from the street or via the hotel. While also the designers of the hotel, twenty2degrees has intentionally moved away from the aesthetic vernacular of the hotel to take its cues from mid-20th century design and Bauhaus curves in equal measure. Where visual connections with The Dixon do exist, they are subtle, such as the inclusion of teal and yellows which feature in the hotel guestrooms and linear brass partitions recalling the lighting fixture hung over the hotel reception desk.

Using a predominantly pastel colour palette, twenty2degrees has created a relaxed and fresh Miami-beach-inspired atmosphere, distinguishing the restaurant from typical London dining destinations. White metro-style tiles and birched timber veneers, as well as a playful combination of colourful matte and gloss finishes on the ceiling, emphasise the inclusive intent of the design. Traditional terrazzo to the counter tops is paired with a contemporary take in the tabletops where marble is embedded with contrasting marble chips. Positivity and a sense of wellbeing pervade – a far cry from the misery and poverty that once haunted this building in the first half of the last century. Two former holding cells have however been retained, now given new life within the centre of the space, as the place where coffee beans are roasted and from which enticing aromas arise. A black terrazzo grid integrated into the timber floor delineates the location of the old cells that were once below the restaurant, a gentle reminder of the past.

Fittingly, in an area of London which was once an industrial hub, an homage to Sir Kenneth Grange, the revered British designer famous for such 20th Century icons as Kodak cameras and Imperial typewriters, has been woven in by way of a permanent exhibition of his original sketches and conceptual drawings displayed on the wall of the semi-private area. Provisioners is welcoming, chic and unpretentious. Visitors and guests come by throughout day and evening for coffee, cocktails, lunch and dinner, to work on their laptops or gather with friends. Nick Stoupas, Founding Partner of twenty2degrees, says: “We took our design cue from midcentury design and modernism and, in so doing, we have created a vibe that appeals to local workers and residents in this, one of London’s most historic districts, as well as an all-day restaurant, bar and hub for hotel guests. Provisioners isn’t only unique in its neighbourhood, but it’s quite different from typical contemporary restaurant design across London with its pastel, Miami-esque colour palette creating a sense of well-being and positivity, even on the greyest London day.”

T

wenty2degrees Design Partnership is redesigning the all-suite Wyndham Grand Algarve following the property’s recent re-badging as part of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, the group’s first Wyndham Grand hotel in Portugal. The vision is to create elegant, yet relaxed, interiors overlaid with urban chic – designs intended to appeal to the international visitors who flock to this part of Europe. The majority of the suites are now completed and public areas are due to follow in 2021. The five-star hotel is located in the exclusive Quinta do Lago resort on the most south-westerly tip of Europe, famed for its golf courses and beautiful beaches. The 60 km stretch of Ria Formosa Natural Park, with its wealth of flora, fauna and walking trails, is on the hotel’s doorstep, forming a protected coastal lagoon. It was this tranquil and verdant natural environment, as well as the gentle hues and warm sunlight which prevail in the Algarve’s pleasant year-round climate and the soft colours of the sunsets that gave inspiration to the design team. The materiality of the scheme is of the highest quality, combining such elements as Calacatta marble with antiqued brass, leather upholstery, warm timber flooring and fluted and hammered glass screens. The colour palette majors on tones of terracotta, stone and sand with punches of bold colour and an abundance of plantings in the public areas that offer connection with the gardens outside.

TOP: Metal framed screens with variously frosted and transparent glazing will articulate the fine dining restaurant.

The design of the reception lobby takes its cue from the double-height rotunda of its form with curved chair backs, round tables, circular rugs and a striking modern chandelier – a series of brass circles with integrated illumination that appears to free fall through the volume. It is also here that several of design signatures that can be found across the hotel are established: the warm, natural tones; generous use of timber to create wall features; an indoor/ outdoor connection; and, in contrast to the circular forms, touches of the vertical patterning which is so striking in other spaces. The lounge bar flows seamlessly from the lobby with a closely paired aesthetic of curved forms, refined furnishing and antiqued brass elements. This is a space designed to serve as venue throughout day and evening. During the day, elegant timber doors slide across the back bar and the lounge becomes a place for morning coffee and afternoon tea. There will be a number of F&B options, including an informal all-day dining restaurant with the feel of a vibrant farmhouse kitchen and a fine dining restaurant. This will be sophisticated in ambience with a number of special touches. Metal framed screens with variously frosted and transparent glazing will articulate the space, creating semi-opaque niches and partial cladding to the ceiling, their rectangular shapes echoed in the floor finish and the ceiling lights. A feature wall clad in sculpted tiles will be translated into a large

MARRIOTT PRAGUE

INTERNATIONAL POLISH; LOCAL PROVENANCE REFURBISHING THE PRAGUE MARRIOTT TO SIT WELL WITHIN THE CITY’S CULTURAL INHERITANCE.

A

project which began for London-based twenty2degrees as a refurbishment of the conference and meeting room floor at the Prague Marriott, expanded into a comprehensive re-configuration and redesign of the ground floor public areas and then the design of additional guestrooms in a new extension. The red thread was Marriott’s guidelines but the designers layered their schemes with features specific to the location and the rich artistic heritage of Prague to create a hotel that is both recognisably a Marriott while at the same time also uniquely belonging in this city. The first-floor conference and meeting spaces, which comprise two large ballrooms, a smaller function room and numerous meeting rooms, correspond with Marriott’s “Meetings Reimagined” guidelines. The areas are clean, contemporary and, above all, multi-functional. The floor is now accessed via a new street entrance and a staircase which take visitors directly to the conference area reception. To one side of this, a large open-plan pre-function area runs like a spine to the individual spaces. Warm timber, elegant stone and marble-topped tables greet the eye but what is not so immediately apparent is the cleverly thought-through detailing of the furniture which achieves the flexibility of use that operators today require. A central marble-clad counter is designed with integrated shelves and pocket timber extensions that slide out to create a large and functional buffet display unit, elegant high tables offer easily relocated gathering points and fixed timber wall units provide storage and display possibilities to support myriad occasions.

“THE INTENTION OF OUR DESIGN WAS TO MAKE THE BAR AND RESTAURANT SEEM JUST RIGHT IN THEIR LOCATION – A SUBCONSCIOUS RATHER THAN CONSCIOUS RESPONSE. IN FACT, THE CUBIST ELEMENTS ARE EITHER SO BROKEN DOWN OR ABSTRACTED THAT WE WOULDN’T EXPECT GUESTS TO RECOGNISE THE EXACT REFERENCE. IN HOTELS, IT’S ABOUT HOW THE DESIGN MAKES YOU FEEL, NOT A HISTORY OF ART COURSE.” Nick Stoupas, Founding Partner, twenty2degrees

THIS PHOTO: The restaurant interiors are in keeping with the cuisine – simple Czech dishes based on casual dining using fine local ingredients.

Flooring is bespoke and, together with the artwork, subtly hints at the Czech Cubist references celebrated in other areas of the hotel. Key to the new ground floor plan was the relocation of the staircase leading to the meeting room floor. Previously, both the restaurant and bar had been hidden from view by this staircase, discouraging their patronage by either guests or passers-by. twenty2 degrees comprehensively replanned the ground floor to achieve a layering of spaces from the arrivals lobby to the lounge, onto the Artisan Restaurant and finally the double-height Artisan Bar which gleams like a jewel at the end of the series of spaces, drawing visitors and guests inwards. The aesthetic of both the restaurant and bar is inspired by Czech Cubism, in particular the work of Frantisek Kupka, pioneer of Orphic Cubism and the abstract art movement. Positive and negative shapes and finishes are placed side-by-side to create a dynamic energy. Abstracted allusions to Cubist forms appear in screens, carpets, floor tiles and the timberclad bar front down to some of the smallest details in the furniture. twenty2 degrees found their reference for the back of the bar in a famous Prague column sculpted in the early 20 th Century and combined this with antiqued mirror to glamorous effect. twenty2 degrees also worked with emerging Czech artists in the creation of individual artworks. “The intention of our design was to make the bar and restaurant seem just right in their location – a subconscious rather than conscious response. In fact, the Cubist elements are either so broken down or abstracted that we wouldn’t expect guests to recognise the exact reference. In hotels, it’s about how the design makes you feel, not a history of art course.” Nick Stoupas, Founding Partner, twenty2 degrees.

The aim of the design was also to create interiors in keeping with their culinary offering – simple Czech dishes based on casual dining and made only with fine local ingredients. Since opening, both bar and restaurant have become a thriving social hub for families and friends. The client’s purchase of a property next door to the Marriott resulted in the final phase of work, the creation of 123 new keys. For twenty2 degrees, this was an opportunity to design rooms that moved on from the existing bedrooms while, nevertheless, carrying through certain elements at the client’s request. The new guestrooms are contemporary and relatively streamlined with warm timber flooring and elegant furnishings. A built-in sofa along the window provides a haven for relaxing and contemplating the life of the city below while, once again, Cubist reference infuses the carpet design and is picked up in the scatter cushions. The bathrooms are upscale and modern, bringing together marble, dark timber and terrazzo flooring slabs with a slight touch of industrial design in the fixtures and fittings. The Prague Marriott has been reimagined for the next generation. For regular Marriott clientele, all the touchpoints are here, from the flowing public spaces to the “Integrated Art” concept, the emphasis on flexible meeting room spaces and the high-quality finishes. It is also a hotel thoughtfully and playfully imbued with local provenance.

thens Capital Hotel, the MGallery Collection’s first hotel in Greece, has just opened. Located in the heart of the city, its prominent position on the corner of Parliament Square means it looks in one direction towards one of Athens’ most popular tourist destination and in the other towards the bohemian quarter of Kolonaki with its numerous art galleries. It was this vibe that the interior designers, MKV Design, decided to embrace in order to create a hotel that is a perfect fit for the MGallery brand – individual, modern and rich in stories told through art, design and architecture. Originally opening in 1959 as the famous Kings Palace hotel, the building subsequently housed a bank before standing empty for a number of years. The building form that the project team inherited naturally lent itself to a jigsaw of spaces and levels around a 27-meter high atrium which is open to the sky, and it is here that the hotel’s defining art piece has been installed - the original Mappemonde sculpted by leading Greek artist, George Lappas, for the Venice Biennale of 1988.

THIS PHOTO: Contrasting textures in the marble floor and specially carved marble to the columns display the skills of local craftsmen.

Composed of 3,000 metal pieces, Mappemonde is one of the best-known and most important works of Greek post-war sculpture and reflects on the relationship between the personal and universal, the local and global. The genius of its placement in Athens Capital Hotel is that the designers have converted the previously horizontal display into an astonishing vertical installation, soaring up the building to “break through” the 10 th floor roof top. Lappas’s version of his own house, which originally sat in the centre of the sculpture, is now perched over the atrium void, open to guests brave enough to venture inside. The drama of the Mappemonde sculpture contrasts with a refined interior aesthetic, celebrating the elegance of pure lines and noble materials and subtly integrating Greek symbols and patterns. The ground floor public areas are a series of intimate nooks flowing from the main entrance on the busy Panepistimiou Avenue to the Galerie Café which opens onto a quiet lane leading to Kolonaki. Reception is at the far end, away from the entrance, which adds to the residential ambience and sense of exclusivity. As in ancient Athens, white Dionysus marble prevails combined with grey marble, both skilfully honed to show the workmanship, and accents are in gold. These are complemented by the warm tones of fabrics, especially the vibrant blue hue synonymous with Greece. The reception area hosts two paintings by Yannis Adamakos whose richly coloured abstracted landscapes have earned him international attention.

TOP: There are hundreds of original works of art in the hotel created by both established and up-and-coming artists.

The 177 bedrooms and suites are cosy and contemporary. Generous use of timber, marble clad bathrooms and original artwork add to the experience of luxury. The Presidential Suite features a customdesigned wall covering and rug with designs based on Greek heritage patterns and benefits from a large outdoor terrace for lounging and dining in the warm Athenian light. Views from the guestrooms are unforgettable, either towards the square and National Garden or into the atrium. Several of the suites are named after revered Greek artists, including soprano Maria Callas, actress Melina Mercouri, the poet and Nobel Prize winner, Odysseas Elytis, and the composer and songwriter, Manos Chatzidakis – reinforcing the significance of great artistry to the MGallery brand. In a city that revels in its rooftop experiences, MKV’s planning put emphasis on creating an Athens Capital rooftop which brings a truly memorable addition with thoughtful levels and zones offering a variety of experiences. A swimming pool has been introduced, carefully placed to offer the best views towards the Parthenon and the sea, while, on the opposite side, the Mappemonde Bar & Lounge overlooks the Parliament building and National Garden beyond. By night, the Mappemonde sculpture is washed with illumination.

Other spaces include an all-day dining restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine, three small meeting rooms and a gym. The original staircase, now restored, winds its way up through the building – should guests want a bracing alternative to the lifts. In total, Athens Capital Hotel displays hundreds of original artworks by Athenian and Greek artists, some well-established and others up-and-coming. There is also the “Iconic Object”. Since storytelling is an important part of the MGallery experience, each hotel within the collection hosts an item of special significance to its location. For Athens Capital Hotel, this is an Akrokeramon, a decorative architectural element seen widely across neoclassical Athenian rooftops, symbolising the timeless value of hospitality. Urban artist, Vangelis Khoursoglou, has spray painted an edition of 50 Akrokeramon, adding a touch of modern street art to a traditional motif, and these have been placed around the hotel to charm and intrigue.

BOTTOM: The Galerie Café opens onto an outdoor arcade leading to Kolonaki with its art galleries, boutiques and numerous local restaurants.

“The Athens Capital project has been particularly exciting and enriching because we were working with a client who has a deep appreciation of art and with a hotel brand for which art is an integral part of its DNA,” says Maria Vafiadis, Founder and Managing Director of MKV Design. “When design and art come together in this way, the result is especially meaningful, individual and full of soul.” The architects on the project were MTarchitects; the lighting consultants were Lighting Design International and the art consultant was Maria Migadi. The artists (in addition to those featured above) were: Yannis Moralis, Spiros Vasileiou, Dimosthenis Kokkinidis, Panagiotis Tetsis, Evgenios Spatharis, Stefaños Nanopoulos (Nano), Yannis Stavrou, Yannis Papanelopoulos, Tasos Chonias, Christos Baloukos and Christoforos Balabanidis. All the guestroom originals, inspired by Cycladic art and classical Greek lines, were by Sofia Petropoulou and the Greek flag artwork in the lift lobby was created by Zeta Antsakli. Key suppliers included: Minotti (sofas), B&B Italia (outdoor furniture), Verywood (chairs), Heathfield (guestroom lights), Knoll (chairs), Pierre Frey (guestroom fabrics), Brintons (guestroom rugs) and Vescom (guestroom wallcovering) as well as a number of local suppliers of bespoke furniture, lights and accessories.

dored for its soft line and generous sizes, the Reva outdoor collection by Patrick Jouin now features a new, enriched version: the Reva Twist. This three-seater sofa and lounge exude a distinct cosy appeal that creates dreamy, relaxing ambiences. Four tapered legs in die-cast aluminium rest against the extremities of the perimeter frame in extruded aluminium, setting off a subtle minimalist appearance. To balance the frame’s slim outlook, the steel backrest and armrests are woven with a flat rope in weather-resistant polypropylene, elucidating a more natural feel. Huge polyester cushions, on the other hand, offer a softer, plusher experience while giving Reva Twist a wholesome and welcoming look. The upholstery is made from weather-friendly fabric which allows the sofa set to be placed within a variety of outdoor spaces. Whether it’s a semi-open patio, a courtyard or a deck that overlooks lush landscape, Reva Twist is the perfect outdoor piece to uplift these spaces.

Colours play a significant role to create different atmospheric scenarios. For example, warm natural tones of the frame finish pair beautifully with the cushion’s soothing hues to create a remarkable suntouched piece for lively outdoor spaces. For a more sophisticated ambience, grey, beige or light brown upholstery matches with deeper hues of the backrest and frame to evoke a more refined style. The collection also features an armchair version to complement the three-seater sofa. Ideal as a standalone piece, the armchair beautifully echoes the collection’s design language that combines lightweight lines with roomy seats. Reva Twist is part of Pedrali’s New Ideas 2020 collection, a project which brings together versatile products that are refreshed to reflect wellness, comfort, and sustainability without compromising aesthetics and high quality.

layful and whimsically timeless, the Camaleonda modular sofa designed by renowned designer Mario Bellini is truly a statement-making masterpiece. First presented in 1970, Camaleonda has now made a comeback five decades later. In this reissue by B&B Italia and Bellini, the sofa’s best features are preserved while its interior composition has been given a contemporary uplift using sustainable materials. Both B&B Italia and Bellini have mutually agreed to maintain the 90x90 cm seat module, together with the backrest and armrest in the 2020 version of the sofa. The updated edition also keeps the original cutting pattern where generous polyurethane padding are manufactured with an innovative system of cables, hooks and rings created by Bellini in 1970. More than just elements that define the sofa’s character, these tie-rods and the rings enable the seating modules to be unhooked and recombined as desired, which

result in an incredibly adaptable and dynamic sofa for today’s everchanging spaces. For the new edition, recyclable materials form the “sandwich” structure of Camaleonda while the seat, backrest and armrests are made from wooden bases. The sofa also rests on a series of spherical feet made from beech wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). To expand Camaleonda into a complete seating landscape, Bellini developed a series of accessories called Gli Scacchi which resemble chess pieces and serve as additional tables or seats. Inspired by the game of chess, the new 2020 version features soft covers made of thick leather and calf hide with visible stitching. With their abstract yet versatile shapes, these pieces seamlessly synchronize with Camaleonda to create even more configuration possibilities.

holistic sofa system that is simple yet incredibly versatile, Conseta is a pioneering upholstery system designed by renowned furniture designer, Friedrich Wilhelm Möller. Its name is derived from the Latin phrase “sitting together” to represent the sofa’s streamlined and flexible modular design. According to COR, Conseta is more than a sofa system as it can also serve as an accoutrement to meet any interior specifications. “Conseta is not only a sofa programme but also an add-on programme offering countless possibilities. Elements of different shapes and sizes combined with a choice of armrests give plenty of scope to explore configurations to fit every room,” COR states, adding that a myriad of armrest options as well as a selection of cushion choices enable a wide range of design solutions.

Right from the start when it was first conceived in the 60s, Conseta is designed to be an eternally timeless piece so that new additions to the modular system would continuously serve to improve and evolve it. For instance, when you pair a new square upholstery element to the sofa, a new combination emerges, turning Conseta into a cosy lounger that is contemporary and classic at the same time. There is also the option to include footrests or an adjustable headrest to make the sofa a better fit for your lifestyle. If you still need more customization, COR can accommodate a diverse range of special requests from specific measurements to unique fittings that do not come with a standard Conseta. In a nutshell, when it comes to Conseta, anything is possible.

unique anthology that merges architecture with cinematography, the Pinkham Project is presented by Giancarlo Bosio, the company’s Art Director and created by Giorgetti designers in collaboration with SuperResolution, a studio specializing in virtual environments and highquality graphic pictures. According to Giorgetti’s design commentary, this immersive project showcases a virtual villa which combines pure lines and rigorous geometries inspired by the design languages of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright. To complement the physical setting, cinematographic techniques consisting of wide tracking shots and close-up shots, together with a crescendo of music evokes a poetic narration of the villa’s architectural beauty. Each of Pinkham Point’s impressive sets features signature touches and magnificent volumes amid a rich palette of textures and accents. The exterior

brings together design and nature to honour scenes by Michelangelo Antonioni in Zabriskie Point, from which the name Pinkham came about, while the canyon of the Joshua Tree National Park hosts bodies of water and becomes the background for the OpenAir collection by Giorgetti. For the interior, the key spaces – living, dining, kitchen, office and a “night area”, are illuminated by unique lighting designs created using perforated walls. Colours also play a significant role: white brings out a touch of minimalism while sandy tones and pearl greys are contrasted against vibrant hues of blue and octane. “The Pinkham Point project was born from the need to build an alternative experience at the Salone del Mobile where we can share a heritage of ideas and projects with both Partners and Customers,” comments Giovanni del Vecchio, CEO of Giorgetti.

O

riginally designed by Sicilian architect and designer, Ico Parisi in 1955 for a luxury villa that overlooks Lake Como, the Olimpino table has now been given a reissue to become part of the Cassina I Maestri Collection. Instantaneously recognizable by its bold appearance, the Olimpino table comprises a monolithic tempered glass tabletop held by articulated metal tubular legs. Its two pairs of metals legs are designed with a Y-shaped structure where internal upper arms converge to join under the top and the external arms diverge to hold and elegantly support it. To strengthen the legs, a double crossbar is set across the central axis to form a double V shape. Arrow-shaped wooden feet contrast beautifully with the slender metal legs and crossbar while serving as a finishing touch to give the entire table a sculptural aesthetic. “In the dynamism of its structure, this table also references nature. The arrow-like wooden feet seem to burrow down into the floor, giving warmth to its metal structure that would otherwise be quite cold. The complexity of the overall design of the table therefore recalls the great paintings of the Italian avant-garde artists and is, for all intents and purposes, a work of art in itself,” Cassina remarks in their design statement.

EDGY POP SENSATIONS BY PATRICK RUBENSTEIN

I

n a dizzying kaleidoscope of colours and textures, the works of French artist Patrick Rubenstein are an eclectic combination of kinetic opt-art (Optical Art) and a lens into pop art in today’s contemporary society. Born in 1960, the Parisian artist confronts the traditional art-viewing experience, toying with the boundaries of one’s imagination. Working with base paintings on lacerated boards, Rubenstein then manipulates its angles to form his iconic multi-faceted works across two ridged planes. Additional adornments cast these two worlds apart, through the artist’s favoured “glitter baths”, neon colours and hard metallics. Rubenstein’s works literally pop from the frame, its triangular edges adding to its bold, visceral quality. Optical art aims to challenge the viewer’s perception, giving Rubenstein’s works a captivating, almost animated quality, spirited further with changes in lighting and arrangement. Rubenstein constantly demonstrates his foray into new mediums and themes so as to test the limits of how our senses can be stimulated. Beyond his mastery of his craft, Rubenstein’s works are a critique of how we regard idols and symbols ingrained in contemporary society today. As we observe his works under the stern gaze of John Lennon or the innocent whims of a playful neon panda, the artist himself strongly believes that “the method in which you make art is not important, what matters is the emotion it gives you when you are looking at it”. His works present the duality of pertaining to the exuberance and mischief in popular media and culture, as well as a contemplation into nontraditional art experiences and darker concerns behind pop sensations and consumerism. Rubenstein’s whimsical pieces open alternative doors to new fields of colours and the limits of artistic pursuits, unlocking our senses and expanding to the world beyond a simple frame.
