Create, innovate. Design.
Beautiful and well-crafted hospitality design bridges the past, present, and future, turning visions into places where people unwind, connect, and dream.
PLACES WHERE DREAMS COME TRUE
Design for hospitality spaces is a delicate dance between aesthetics, functionality, and storytelling. These spaces do more than offer respite; they evoke emotions, capture memories, and often become as memorable as the experiences they host. This issue celebrates that essence with compelling stories of design that transcend the ordinary.
At the heart of this edition is Baskervill, a global design firm renowned for crafting spaces that resonate with purpose and individuality. From the serene, resort-inspired AC Hotel Kingston in Jamaica to the history-rich reinvention of the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel, and the industrial-chic charm of Knoxville’s Cumberland House, their projects demonstrate how thoughtful design enhances both place and experience.
I am personally impressed with the projects that showcase Baskervill’s versatility. The Glass Light Hotel, part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, blends historic preservation with contemporary artistry, highlighted by a curated collection of glass art, creating a journey through time and design. Meanwhile, the Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront brings playful aesthetics to the iconic boardwalk, creating an immersive retreat that reimagines classic surf culture.
Beyond the featured designer, check out the innovative brands and products redefining the world of furniture and furnishings. Explore Kettal’s homage to modernist icon Richard Neutra through their intricate replica of the 1963 VDL Research House penthouse pavilion. Delight in Lasvit’s glass installations from Design Miami 2024, which explore the interplay between light, material, and emotion. And finally, discover the recent transformation of The Regent Hong Kong in an exclusive interview that delves into the hotel’s design inspiration and Royal Thai’s bespoke carpets, which elevate its elegant atmosphere.

Tradition is given a contemporary twist with the Lauren folding chair designed by Antonio Citterio. Classic yet modern, the chair’s solid wood structure, hand-turned and finished, complements its metal-clad seat, backrest, and armrests covered in cowhide. The small metal parts were custom-designed to enhance the chair with exquisite details. Whether it’s a lounge area or the hotel lobby, Lauren is a standout piece that can transform any room.

The steel disk mechanism, housed in a sinuous pedestal, lets both elements rotate independently, creating a harmonious flow. This innovative design makes Tamburound perfect for both casual lunches and more festive occasions.
CYCLICAL COMFORT

COASTAL FLAIR
With FLLAIR, you’d find that its beautiful curves tell a story that begins with the serenity of an island retreat. MAKING A STATEMENT SKATER STYLE
Minimalist design, infinite possibilities. Adler is a versatile collection of tables that transcends function. The support base, composed of tapered wood legs with elegant metal tips, complements thick, rounded tabletops. Available in dining, console, low, and high variations, Adler’s simplicity and adaptability make it perfect for unconventional uses, such as a stylish library surface or display area. Its understated design brings sophistication to any space, offering a quiet yet impactful presence.
Inspired by the fluid, flawless movements of figure skating, the Flutz chair, designed by Michael Anastassiades, exceeds expectations with its striking structure comprising a steel frame and upholstered seating. Available in two backrest heights, the armrest-free versions perfectly complement the minimalist Ordinal dining table. In addition, thanks to the work carried out by Cassina LAB, all of the pieces of the chair can be disassembled at the end of its life cycle.
WINDS OF CHANGE
Art meets the beauty of nature in the making of Scirocco, a sideboard designed to celebrate texture and transformation. With an anthracite grey ash wood structure, this piece features birch plywood doors adorned with an epoxy resin finish. Each door is a unique piece exemplifying a dynamic interplay of colours and textures. Inspired by the warm and erratic Scirocco wind, this sideboard infuses spaces with vitality and an unmistakable artistic charm.
REVIVAL OF A LEGACY
THE KETTAL VDL PAVILION IS A TIMELESS HOMAGE TO RICHARD NEUTRA’S LEGACY, MERGING CONTEMPORARY CONSTRUCTION WITH HIS ICONIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES TO CREATE SPACES THAT NURTURE THE BODY AND MIND.
In a celebration of architectural legacy, Kettal presents a striking and meticulous replica of the 1963 penthouse pavilion atop the VDL Research House, the former Los Angeles residence of the renowned modernist architect Richard Neutra. This carefully executed reconstruction blends modern materials and construction techniques with the essence of Neutra’s original design, serving as a powerful tribute to Neutra’s visionary theories, including his commitment to biorealism—a philosophy that highlights the profound connection between architecture and human well-being.
The VDL Research House, originally constructed in 1932, holds a special place in architectural history as one of Richard Neutra’s most significant works. Commissioned by Dr. Van Der Leeuw (VDL), the VDL Research House was designed as a holistic living and working space. After a fire in 1963 destroyed the property, Neutra and his son Dion rebuilt the house, adding a solarium/atrium.
Under the guidance of Dion Neutra, Kettal’s replication of the masterpiece in 2024 updates the main structure with modern techniques while honouring the original architectural details. The pavilion’s most striking features include horizontal lines and wooden slats that extend 500mm beyond the structure. Richard Neutra himself referred to them in various texts: “Traditional Japanese architecture is horizontal; space is exclusively horizontal. Without a defined centre or axis, it extends as an aggregate of rooms of equal value, none of which is complete except in relation to the others. The space is flexible and transferable, without a fixed function. The use of the rooms varies over the course of the day and throughout the year.”
In addition to the structural elements, Kettal’s attention to functional beauty is evident in the pavilion’s design. Built-in furniture and carefully chosen materials merge seamlessly with the architecture. Meanwhile, large windows and open spaces foster a strong connection between interior and exterior, reinforcing Neutra’s belief that architecture should engage all the senses.

HARNESSING THE SPIRIT OF JAMAICA
LOCATED IN THE HEART OF JAMAICA’S CAPITAL CITY, THE AC HOTEL KINGSTON TAKES ITS RESORT-STYLE INSPIRATION FROM THE SURROUNDING BLUE MOUNTAINS.
Welcome to Kingston, Jamaica—a city bursting with energy, history, and culture. Nestled in its vibrant heart is an immersive hotel experience that embodies the essence of island life, its colors, textures, rhythms, and soul evident in every aspect of the design.
The 148,000-square-foot AC Hotel Kingston takes its architectural inspiration from the surrounding Blue Mountains. The distinctive balconies protruding from the façade are reminiscent of the puffy clouds that bisect the range on sunny Jamaican afternoons. Stepping onto the property feels like a resort oasis amongst Kingston’s urban hustle-and-bustle; a purposeful tactic to create a truly immersive guest experience. The property includes a custom outdoor stage for live music and community events, along with a pool and pool deck.
Inside, the seven-story hotel includes 220 guest rooms and suites, a branded lounge, kitchen, library, ballroom and meeting space, and media salons. The layering of light wood walls, warm neutral floors, and textural stone tile imparts a tranquil atmosphere elevated by signature artwork and accessories. The gallery-inspired aesthetic was thoughtfully curated to provide guests with a deeper connection to the heart of Jamaica with a distinctive collection of Jamaican art and furnishings reflective of its people, heritage, and culture.
“Our goal was to create a building that harmonizes with the local community while immersing guests in the true spirit of the island,” says Principal, Bob Tierney, AIA. “Drawing from the textures, colors, and forms of the landscape, we crafted an environment that mirrors Jamaica’s vibrant identity and celebrates the stories that make it distinct.”
The integration of art is core to the hotel’s philosophy. As part of the design process, a local art curator was engaged to achieve a truly authentic representation of Jamaica’s people and day-to-day life. Most pieces were commissioned specifically for the hotel and the exhibit offers a representation of Jamaica’s vibrant diversity; a purposeful mixture of sculpture, mixed-media, wood carvings, oil on canvas, and more, meant to spark conversation around issues of humanity we all face.
“OUR GOAL WAS TO CREATE A BUILDING THAT HARMONIZES WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY WHILE IMMERSING GUESTS IN THE TRUE SPIRIT OF THE ISLAND, DRAWING FROM THE TEXTURES, COLORS, AND FORMS OF THE LANDSCAPE, WE CRAFTED AN ENVIRONMENT THAT MIRRORS JAMAICA’S VIBRANT IDENTITY AND CELEBRATES THE STORIES THAT MAKE IT DISTINCT.”
Principal, Bob Tierney, AIA

URBAN OASIS IN THE SKY
THE AC HOTEL ORLANDO DOWNTOWN TURNS SUNBEAMS INTO BRUSHSTROKES, SEAMLESSLY BLENDING INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES WITH A DESIGN THAT FEELS LIKE AN EXTENSION OF THE PANORAMIC CITY VIEWS.
Soaring above downtown Orlando, the AC Hotel Orlando Downtown is a skyline statement. A place that transforms the cityscape into one breathtaking panorama. With 180 guest rooms occupying a sleek 112,000-square-foot tower, the hotel redefines what it means to connect with a city from above. Akin to an urban lighthouse, the contemporary beacon shines from one of the city’s tallest buildings, calling out to travelers and locals alike to look up, venture in, and experience the city like never before.
Step into the AC Hotel’s 18 th -floor lobby and it’s clear this isn’t an average hotel check-in. The space feels like an elevated observatory, offering a 360degree sweep of downtown Orlando. The skyline is set against the lobby’s curated interiors that play with light, shadow, and sky. Tiered lanterns hang like suspended sculptures over the bar, drawing guests in with their glow and creating a soft spotlight effect that frames the bar’s space.
“THE INDOOR-OUTDOOR BAR IS CENTRAL TO THIS EXPERIENCE, POSITIONED TO MAKE GUESTS FEEL LIKE THEY’RE FLOATING ABOVE THE CITY. IT’S THE HEART OF THE HOTEL’S SOCIAL SPACE, A DYNAMIC AND FUNCTIONAL SPOT WHERE DESIGN AND NATURE COEXIST, WITH LAYERED LIGHTING THAT ECHOES THE CITY’S OWN GLOW.”
Principal, Patricia Lopez, CID, NCIDQ,
LEED AP
“The design team thought of the lobby as an observatory; a place where Orlando’s energy converges with the serenity of the sky,” explains Principal, Patricia Lopez, CID, NCIDQ, LEED AP.
“The indoor-outdoor bar is central to this experience, positioned to make guests feel like they’re floating above the city. It’s the heart of the hotel’s social space, a dynamic and functional spot where design and nature coexist, with layered lighting that echoes the city’s own glow.”
The outdoor patio is an open-air sanctuary that connects guests directly to the cityscape. The bar, framed by sleek stone countertops and surrounded by comfortable high-top seating, is situated as a focal point adjacent to communal tables and lounge seating.
The interplay of light is a vital narrative throughout the hotel, changing as naturally as the progression of the day. The lighting was designed to illuminate and transform. During the day, natural light floods the lobby and rooms, casting shadows that shift and dance across surfaces. The experience is dynamic— with sunlight illuminating high-contrast details in textiles and furnishings to highlight their textures and evoke a sense of movement.
“The light is always shifting, creating a sense of evolution within the space,” notes Lopez. “It’s like watching the city breathe through the glass.”
As day transitions into night, artificial lighting takes over, casting a softer, more intimate glow that enhances the lobby’s warm tones and invites a different pace. The suspended lanterns over the bar become beacons in themselves, their light radiating across the lobby in soft, rippling patterns that mimic the city lights below.
THIS PHOTO: The breakfast bar echoes the hotel’s contemporary aesthetic, with clean lines and natural materials that integrate functionality and style, all while maintaining an open, airy feel.
THE HIGHLY CURATED FURNITURE SELECTION ISN’T JUST FUNCTIONAL BUT SCULPTURAL, WITH TONE-ON-TONE COLOR BLOCKING AND LAYERED TEXTURES THAT SEEM TO MIRROR ORLANDO’S LANDSCAPE. THE SOFAS, CHAIRS, AND TABLES ARE CHOSEN NOT ONLY FOR COMFORT BUT ALSO TO EVOKE A SENSE OF NATURAL STRATA, MIMICKING THE LAYERS OF CITYSCAPE, GREENERY, AND SKY YOU SEE FROM THE HOTEL’S LOFTY VANTAGE POINT.
“Nothing is out of place, yet there’s an undeniable energy that permeates the space,” says Lopez. “It’s dramatic, but it’s also undeniably calming. It’s designed to be a place to settle in and soak up the sights, drink in hand.”
Tucked within the sleek, open-plan lobby is a co-working library, complete with a curated selection of design and travel books, private nooks, and long communal tables that encourage both productivity and casual connection.
The guest rooms, much like the lobby, reflect a meticulous attention to detail that speaks to Orlando’s unique character. High above the ground, the rooms embrace the horizon with expansive windows that make the cityscape part of the décor. Layered textures bring warmth and depth, balancing the airy openness of the rooms with a sense of rich intimacy.
NUANCED NAUTICAL INFLUENCE
CONVERGING OLD AND NEW, THE RENOVATION OF THE ANNAPOLIS WATERFRONT HOTEL ANCHORS THE SPIRIT OF ANNAPOLIS IN EVERY DETAIL—REFLECTING THE TOWN’S RICH NAUTICAL HISTORY WHILE OPTIMIZING THE GUEST EXPERIENCE.
Part of Marriott’s esteemed Autograph Collection, the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel is a landmark in the city’s thriving downtown— and its only waterfront offering. Nuanced nautical influences set the tone for this comprehensive renovation, which included updates to all 150 guest rooms and suites and public spaces, as well as a re-imaging of the exterior façade. The renovation reimagined the guest experience, bringing the timeless charm of seaside hospitality into a more modern era. The old seafaring expression “fair winds and following seas” set the tone for the design—evoking a sense of security, serenity, and peace for travelers, and informing every detail that brings the property’s location to life.
THE GUEST BATHROOMS ALSO RECEIVED A LUXURIOUS OVERHAUL, WITH KING ROOMS NOW OFFERING SLEEK SHOWERS AND SUITES OUTFITTED WITH JETTED TUBS TO PROVIDE GUESTS WITH THE ULTIMATE RELAXATION AFTER A DAY SPENT EXPLORING THE HISTORIC CITY. CLASSIC NAUTICAL HUES OF DEEP BLUES AND CRISP WHITES DOMINATE THE COLOR PALETTE, ACCENTED BY ECLECTIC ARTWORK AND CAREFULLY CURATED FURNITURE TO BRING A CHARMING, RESIDENTIAL VIBE TO EACH SPACE.
“The design team was endlessly inspired by the location,” says Principal, Adrienne Scribner, CID, ASID. “We wanted guests to feel connected to the water and the history of Annapolis, and to experience a modern take on rich maritime tradition. Every detail was chosen to reflect that story. When experienced as a whole, the locale comes alive.”
The guest room redesign takes cues from the classic elements of a vintage sailboat, combining warm, inviting tones with textures that evoke the cozy refined hull, and below-deck cabins. Walnut hardwood floors, reminiscent of a boat’s deck, establish a residential feel, while tufted channel headboards—accentuated by brass nail heads—offer a sophisticated nod to the utilitarian hardware found aboard ships. Patterns in the materials are inspired by the graceful movement of winds and waves, which stand in contrast to the more structured forms of the guestroom furniture.
This balance between organic flow and geometric precision creates a sense of calm, much like the experience of sailing on open water. Rippling glass accents and channeled upholstery further mimic the way water gently laps against the seawall of Annapolis’s harbor, grounding the design in its surroundings.
“We wanted guests to feel as if they were experiencing life at sea, even while inside,” says Scribner. “Movement was created through the use of strategically placed materials, colors, and finishes. Organic patterns used throughout were inspired by the graceful feeling of the winds and seas to contrast the more linear forms of the furniture.”
The guest bathrooms also received a luxurious overhaul, with king rooms now offering sleek showers and suites outfitted with jetted tubs to provide guests with the ultimate relaxation after a day spent exploring the historic city. Classic nautical hues of deep blues
“WE WANTED GUESTS TO FEEL AS IF THEY WERE EXPERIENCING LIFE AT SEA, EVEN WHILE INSIDE, MOVEMENT WAS CREATED THROUGH THE USE OF STRATEGICALLY PLACED MATERIALS, COLORS, AND FINISHES. ORGANIC PATTERNS USED THROUGHOUT WERE INSPIRED BY THE GRACEFUL FEELING OF THE WINDS AND SEAS TO CONTRAST THE MORE LINEAR FORMS OF THE FURNITURE.”
Principal, Adrienne Scribner, CID, ASID
“THE DESIGN TEAM WAS ENDLESSLY INSPIRED BY THE LOCATION, WE WANTED GUESTS TO FEEL CONNECTED TO THE WATER AND THE HISTORY OF ANNAPOLIS, AND TO EXPERIENCE A MODERN TAKE ON RICH MARITIME TRADITION. EVERY DETAIL WAS CHOSEN TO REFLECT THAT STORY. WHEN EXPERIENCED AS A WHOLE, THE LOCALE COMES ALIVE.”
Principal, Adrienne Scribner, CID, ASID
and crisp whites dominate the color palette, accented by eclectic artwork and carefully curated furniture to bring a charming, residential vibe to each space. The blend of old-world Annapolis charm with modern sensibilities gives the rooms a fresh yet timeless appeal.
Public spaces extend the nautical narrative with layered hues of navy and white, moody grays, and browns—a subtle and sophisticated nod to the palette of the sea. Modern fixtures and furniture, and large-scale art, provide a contemporary twist on the traditional theme.
“For leisure travelers seeking a quintessential Annapolis experience, the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel offers more than just a place to stay—it provides a journey through time, a connection to the city’s legacy, and a modern sanctuary designed for relaxation,” says Scribner. These villas represent a thoughtful response to the demand for more private, tailored spaces that allow guests to forge deeper connections with each other, without sacrificing the convenience and vibrancy of an all-inclusive resort. Inspired by the famous Seven Mile Beach, the design and identity of the resort embody the natural wonders of the island, from surf to sand. Indigenous materials, organic shapes, imperfect wood, and the fluid forms of water combine to create a layered, tactile experience that allows guests to connect to the rooted history of Negril as they make memories of their own.
The design celebrates the island’s scenic vistas, intentionally blurring the lines of interior and exterior environments to evoke a holistic experience of discovery and surprise. The exterior vernacular makes clear references to traditional Caribbean architecture through wood shutters and open-air verandas, inviting guests to relax and soak in their surroundings. Wood and stucco cladding set a simple, yet elegant, tone that echoes its surroundings. The Firesky Villas’ oceanfront courtyards and plunge pools offer families a unique, private oasis that’s all their own.
“The strategic placement of pergolas and verandas are more than just aesthetic gestures,” explains Principal, Patricia Lopez, CID, NCIDQ, LEED AP. “They serve a functional role in naturally cooling the spaces, promoting airflow while simultaneously blurring the division between inside and out, a vital aspect of the authentic Caribbean lifestyle.”
Custom-made bunk beds provide a playful yet practical solution for children while maximizing space for larger families.

Inside, the goal was a cozy yet upscale embrace of humanity and nature. Embodying the Jamaican design philosophy of buildings as celebrations of openness and community, both the Firefly Reserve and Eventide villas capture the spirit of the locale through intricate wooden details and sea-inspired color palettes. Space and structure are highlighted with bold and bright statements in tones of grass green, sea blue, and a punchy red taken from the ackee—Jamaica’s national fruit. The art throughout the resort was chosen to complement the design and tell a story of the country’s past, its vibrant present, and its future as a hub of creativity and luxury.
“In keeping with the laid-back spirit of Negril, the resort’s interiors reflect a refined take on comfort,” says Lopez. “The spaces are designed to feel lived-in, yet polished. Natural light floods the rooms, while carefully curated details such as hand-woven rugs, locally-inspired patterns, and artisanal wood furniture emphasize the resort’s connection to its locale.” Explore the full photo gallery >>
STITCHING TOGETHER PAST AND PRESENT
TEXTILES AND TRADITION INTERTWINE AT CUMBERLAND HOUSE KNOXVILLE, TAPESTRY COLLECTION, CREATING A LUXURIOUS SPACE SCATTERED WITH INDUSTRIAL DETAILS THAT PAY HOMAGE TO THE CITY’S MANUFACTURING ROOTS.
In the heart of Knoxville, Tennessee, just north of the University of Tennessee’s vibrant Fort Sanders campus, the Cumberland House is a living thread that artfully stitches the present-day bustling community with cherished remnants of its Victorian heritage. Part of Hilton’s exclusive Tapestry Collection, the hotel is a canvas that captures the spirit of the past while embracing the city’s forwardthinking energy. It’s a celebration of the people, stories, and industries that helped shape Knoxville, from its iconic textile mills to its ever-evolving community.
From the outset, the design intent for Cumberland House was clear: honor the city’s industrial roots in a luxurious and immersive guest experience. The design pays homage to Knoxville’s once-thriving fabric-manufacturing legacy that gave rise to thirteen textile mills that contributed to the city’s industrial identity.
“Knoxville’s textile history isn’t just a point of pride—it’s literally the fabric of the city,” says Principal, Terri Callaway, AIA, RID, LEED AP. “We aimed to create a space that was more than just a place to rest your head but a destination where guests could experience the essence of Knoxville’s past, woven seamlessly with its future.”
The hotel’s design takes this heritage to heart, with a particular focus on the often-overlooked button— an emblem of craftsmanship and utility that has ties to Knoxville’s history. This motif is subtly integrated into the interior design, appearing in unexpected places like custom furniture, signage, and artwork. Much like the guests who pass through its doors, these buttons are diverse and unique, each with a distinct story to tell. But like the city itself, they are connected by a shared desire to honor the past while embracing the future.
Upon check-in, guests are greeted by the combined reception desk and bar, enhancing the hotel’s signature community-first experience. Rich leathers and textiles layered with polished concrete and wood accents set the stage for an authentic and moody ambiance. The juxtaposition of modern forms with ornate, Victorian-inspired detailing creates intrigue and depth while offering a level of comfort to guests evoking a connection to the history around them.
Beyond the reception area lies the Weaving Room, an interactive sitting area that honors the city’s nickname, “The Maker City.” This room features a stunning vintage sewing machine art installation, symbolizing the area’s industrial history while celebrating present-day craftsmanship. The installation tells the story of Knoxville’s roots while making guests a part of that story. It’s a space for conversation, relaxation, and connection; a reflection of the community-focused spirit that defines the area.
“KNOXVILLE’S TEXTILE HISTORY ISN’T JUST A POINT OF PRIDE—IT’S LITERALLY THE FABRIC OF THE CITY, WE AIMED TO CREATE A SPACE THAT WAS MORE JUST A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD BUT A DESTINATION WHERE GUESTS COULD EXPERIENCE THE ESSENCE OF KNOXVILLE’S PAST, WOVEN SEAMLESSLY WITH ITS FUTURE.”

Another major objective was to reimagine the property, once a Four Points by Sheraton, as a boutique destination through the thoughtful transfiguration of the existing hotel footprint. Both the interior and exterior were elevated using refined and moody finishes. Rich golds are balanced by rustic woods, creating an opulent and authentic experience that celebrates the district’s continuous growth and evolution, while providing guests a glimpse of the past.
“The renovation offered a unique opportunity to redefine the property’s identity, transforming it from a select-service hotel into a premium offering,” says Callaway. “The design balances rich, sophisticated finishes with raw, tactile materials, updating the building to reflect the district’s ongoing revitalization.”

REFLECTIONS REIMAGINED
ART AND ARCHITECTURE COEXIST AT THE GLASS LIGHT HOTEL & GALLERY, AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION, A STRIKING 20TH-CENTURY REVIVAL TURNED GALLERY-INSPIRED BOUTIQUE HOTEL EXPERIENCE.
Ahistoric 14-story classical revival building in downtown Norfolk, Virginia has undergone a remarkable transformation from its early 20th-century origins as the headquarters for the F.S. Royster fertilizer company to its current iteration as an immersive boutique hotel experience. As part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, this 114-room property captivates visitors with a blend of historic preservation, contemporary artistry, and a uniquely personal collection of glass art curated by the hotel’s owners. Every aspect of the design reflects a thoughtful intention to preserve the building’s architectural legacy while embracing modern aesthetics, making each visit a journey through both time and art.
Originally constructed in 1912, the classical revival building was predominantly used as an office building until its re-imagining as a boutique hotel. One of the biggest goals of both the ownership and design team was to maintain the building’s historic integrity and reveal its hidden beauty, while aligning with the requirements of historic preservation and overall expectations of Marriott’s Autograph Collection.
“OUR PRIORITY WAS TO REVIVE THE BUILDING’S HISTORIC SOUL, EVERY CORNER SEEMED TO REVEAL A NEW GEM, LIKE ORIGINAL BRASS MAIL SLOTS, INTRICATE MOLDINGS, AND DETAILS THAT HAD BEEN HIDDEN FOR YEARS. WE FELT AN INCREDIBLE RESPONSIBILITY TO HONOR THESE ELEMENTS—AND A DEEP JOY IN DOING SO.”

During the transformation, the design team carefully peeled back layers to reveal original architectural gems. These discoveries were integrated into the new design with reverence, creating a dialogue between old and new that is both subtle and stunning. Listed on the historic register, the building benefitted from the support of historic tax credits, which helped fund the transformation while ensuring adherence to preservation guidelines.
“Our priority was to revive the building’s historic soul,” says Associate and Hospitality Studio Director, David Wilbourne. “Every corner seemed to reveal a new gem, like original brass mail slots, intricate moldings, and details that had been hidden for years. We felt an incredible responsibility to honor these elements—and a deep joy in doing so. Each discovery was a reminder of the building’s legacy, and by showcasing them, we were preserving its story for future generations.”
The overall guest experience follows the process of glassmaking, transforming the hotel into a vibrant showcase of artistic expression. The design concept celebrates the art form’s organic nature, incorporating elements of sand, fire, and air throughout the interiors in both subtle and bold gestures. Guest rooms are open concept, allowing guests to easily work, relax, or create in the space.
“We wanted the rooms to feel like an artist’s studio and used the glassmaking process as a conceptual anchor for each material choice and design decision,” says Wilbourne. “This creative approach allowed us to create spaces that felt both deeply grounded and immersive, perfect for a hotel that tells such a multifaceted story.”
ARTWORK UTILIZED THROUGHOUT IS INSPIRED BY THE COLOR CHIPS USED IN THE PROCESS OF GLASSBLOWING. IN PUBLIC SPACES, GLASS ART TAKES CENTER STAGE WITH ICONIC COMMISSIONED AND ONE-OF-A-KIND PIECES FROM CHIHULY, PETER BREMERS, STEPHEN POWELL, LINO TAGLIAPIETRA, AND OTHERS—ALL FROM THE OWNERS’ PERSONAL COLLECTION.
“WE WANTED THE ROOMS TO FEEL LIKE AN ARTIST’S STUDIO AND USED THE GLASSMAKING PROCESS AS A CONCEPTUAL ANCHOR FOR EACH MATERIAL CHOICE AND DESIGN DECISION, THIS CREATIVE APPROACH ALLOWED US TO CREATE SPACES THAT FELT BOTH DEEPLY GROUNDED AND IMMERSIVE, PERFECT FOR A HOTEL THAT TELLS SUCH A MULTIFACETED STORY.” Associate and Hospitality Studio Director, David Wilbourne

Bremers’ work takes on special significance with the inclusion of two whimsical, oversized glass bunnies—one welcoming guests at reception and another lounging at the bar. These bunnies, created specifically for the hotel, serve as an affectionate nod to the owner’s family, capturing a touch of warmth and personality that infuses the space with a sense of charm and individuality. The effect is both visually striking and deeply personal, engaging guests in a larger conversation surrounding the artistry, inherent authenticity, and creation of glass.
The hotel has earned significant recognition with awards including the LIV Hospitality Design Award for Interior Design Renovation and the IIDA Virginia & West Virginia Chapter Interior Design Excellence Award for Hospitality. Additional accolades, such as those from the ABC-Virginia Excellence Awards and the HRACRE Design Awards, further highlight the successful integration of historic preservation with cutting-edge hospitality.
RETRO REVIVAL AT SEA
A MODERN TWIST ON VINTAGE SURF CULTURE AWAITS AT MOXY VIRGINIA BEACH OCEANFRONT, A NOSTALGIC YET FRESH BEACH-SIDE RETREAT THAT CAPTURES THE SPIRIT OF NOSTALGIC SUMMER DAYS FOR THE YOUNG AND YOUNG-AT-HEART.
Set against the lively backdrop of Atlantic Avenue, the Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront is a dynamic, seven-story addition breathing new life into the city’s iconic boardwalk. The 134-key hotel combines vintage charm and contemporary flair, capturing a fresh take on classic surf culture in a contemporary retreat steeped in nostalgia. Design and experience go hand-in-hand, offering an immersive journey where playful aesthetics meet modern functionality, appealing to both the young and young-at-heart.
Born from the phrase “come play in our sandbox,” the property’s design brings whimsical and welcoming elements together in a bold reinterpretation of the boardwalk. Visitors are greeted by vibrant colors and unique touches that bridge the coastal heritage of Virginia Beach with Moxy’s youthful brand personality. Upon entry, seagulls soaring from the second story greet guests, while a two-story slide and playgroundinspired picnic area set the tone for their stay.
A functioning Zoltar fortune-telling machine embodies a sense of fun, transporting guests to the summers of yesteryear. Octopus-themed features, including a mural and art installations, add whimsy and bring to life the property’s official animal mascot, a touchstone for the brand. In the lobby, unique vintage pieces like a Ferris wheel chair are featured, blending playful elements with a sustainable ethos by repurposing items in creative ways. By eschewing fleeting trends and drawing inspiration from Virginia Beach’s storied past, the design cements the property’s future appeal. It also fills a niche in the market by offering amenities that cater to younger travelers seeking stylish and affordable accommodations.
“THE VINTAGE PIECES ARE TEXTURED AND WEATHERED, PHYSICALLY BRINGING THAT WORN-IN, NOSTALGIC EFFECT INTO THE HERE AND NOW, IT’S AN INVITATION TO RECONNECT WITH THE SIMPLER TIMES OF SUMMERS PAST.”

No detail was overlooked when it came to furniture and accessories. Meticulous research, the development of custom pieces, and extensive collaboration come together to convey the design concept. Vintage folding chairs that double as decor and seating hang stylishly from the walls when not in use. Custom versions of boardwalk lamp posts are strategically placed in columns, providing ample illumination and reinforcing the integrity of the exposed ceiling.
The property’s color palette features quintessential retro tones punctuated by modern pops of brightness, encapsulating the fusion of old-school beach culture with today’s tastes. Weathered woods, woven textures, warm concrete, blackened metal, and bronze patina contribute to a coastal aesthetic. This balanced palette enhances the natural connection between indoor and outdoor areas, establishing a fluid transition from hotel to beach.
“The vintage pieces are textured and weathered, physically bringing that worn-in, nostalgic effect into the here and now,” says Principal, Patricia Lopez, CID, NCIDQ, LEED AP. “It’s an invitation to reconnect with the simpler times of summers past.”
With its L-shaped design, the property optimizes ocean views and accessibility, inviting guests to embrace the surrounding landscape. The hotel’s spacious oceanfront patio invites guests and locals to gather and enjoy the coastal views.
“It’s the perfect place to kick back with a cocktail as the sun dips below the horizon—imagine colorful lounges, lawn games, and plenty of room to relax,” says Lopez. “And the open connection to the 12th Street Connector Park, bike path, and boardwalk endlessly extends the property’s outdoor experience, inviting guests to engage with the vibrant local scene.”
The property’s commitment to locality and respect for cultural legacy shine through its homage to a beloved Virginia Beach landmark—a beachfront diner that closed in 2019. The revived connected diner pays tribute through name, menu, and aesthetic, capturing the charm of a classic eatery where generations once gathered. Guests and locals alike can access the diner directly from the boardwalk, creating a seamless link between the hotel and the community.

THE BOUTIQUE HOTEL RENOVATION AT THE ALFOND INN BLENDS SPANISH RENAISSANCE CHARM WITH CONTEMPORARY ARTISTRY, FEATURING REDESIGNED GUEST ROOMS, A SPA, LOBBY CAFÉ, AND REFRESHED PUBLIC SPACES.
Frequently named to Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice list, the renovation of this Four Diamond, award-winning boutique hotel at Rollins College added a new guestroom wing and public spaces. The design responds to the building’s Spanish Renaissance architecture and celebrates The Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art housed at the hotel. The renovation included the addition of 71 guest rooms and suites, a luxe spa and amenity deck, meeting and boardroom space, lobby café, and a complete transformation of the existing public spaces.
One of the design’s most striking achievements is the harmonious blending of old and new. ALCHEMY OF GLASS
LASVIT’S “BLUE SKY” PRESENTATION REDEFINES THE POSSIBILITIES OF GLASS, TRANSFORMING IT INTO A VESSEL OF WONDER AND EXPRESSION AT DESIGN MIAMI 2024.
The beauty of glass lies in its duality – solid yet transparent, fragile yet enduring. At the recent Design Miami 2024, Lasvit, the internationally acclaimed design house renowned for its glass and light creations, explores the delicate qualities of glass further with an evocative interpretation of the show’s “Blue Sky” curatorial theme. Showcasing innovation and artistry, the presentation features three captivating installations that explore the transformative possibilities of glass.

Encased within the glass, delicate organic materials are preserved, creating a poetic harmony between nature and design.
Art Director Maxim Velcovský presents Magma, a series of dramatic vases inspired by the raw energy of molten rock. The pieces embody the primal moment of creation, their textured surfaces and flowing forms reflecting the dynamic interplay of fire and earth.
The final piece, Grain of Sand by U.S. Head Designer Jana Ružicková, is inspired by Miami’s coastal landscape, capturing the journey of sand into a narrative of glassmaking.

ARTISTIC REJUVENATION
FEATURING LUXURIOUS CARPETS BY ROYAL THAI, REGENT HONG KONG PRESENTS A TRANSFORMATIVE FUSION OF ARTISTRY AND CULTURE IN THEIR RECENT RENOVATION, CREATING A MEMORABLE GUEST EXPERIENCE.
Regent Hong Kong, renowned for its impeccable design and luxurious guest experience, integrates elements that honour the city’s rich cultural heritage. Central to their recent transformation is the thoughtful use of designer touches, artwork and eco-friendly practices – all complemented by Royal Thai’s exquisite carpet collection.
In the following Q&A, the hotel’s representative discusses the design inspiration behind the hotel’s revamp, while Stephen Wong, Senior Executive Vice President of Royal Thai, explains how their bespoke carpets enhance the hotel’s elegant atmosphere.
Q: How does the hotel’s design reflect Hong Kong’s local culture?
A: Cultural heritage is celebrated through locally commissioned artwork and architectural elements that honour Hong Kong’s rich history, creating an immersive experience that connects guests with the city’s vibrant culture.
According to Chi Wing Lo, the visionary designer of Regent Hong Kong, “My vision was to create something different and unique—a design that can represent Hong Kong and create a sense of peace, tranquillity, and balance within the city. From the moment of arrival, we are setting the tone for a journey of discovery—a seamless sequence, like a cleansing ritual preparing you for the unexpected harmony that lies within.”
Revered for his considered, meticulous approach —balancing tactile materials and the most skilled artisans—Chi Wing Lo has created a serene and timeless design that beautifully juxtaposes the spectacular views of bustling Victoria Harbour, thus personifying the “Beauty of Contrast,” a hallmark of
Regent design.
His design reference originates from the hotel’s unique location, perched on the edge of the famed Victoria Harbour with sweeping panoramic views. As guests ascend the hotel’s majestic perch, leaving behind the noise of Kowloon’s bustling Tsim Sha Tsui district, they hear the soothing sound of the cascading feng shui fountain, beckoning them inwards. As the iconic Regent doormen open the massive castleinspired doors, guests enter a majestic haven on the harbour, removed from frenzied city life.
Serene interiors are layered with textured materials, including natural granite and quietly decadent touches like hand-stitched leather accents embedded in the natural oak furniture. Chi Wing Lo’s furniture design emanates from his obsession with the two fundamentals of geometry, which have symbolism in Chinese architecture—the circle, representing completeness, perfection, and heaven, and the square, which represents earth.
Q: How does the hotel’s art collection contribute to the overall guest experience?
A: By engaging emerging Hong Kong creatives from the city’s vibrant art scene, the hotel has become a canvas for local talent, fostering a sense of community and cultural pride while creating immersive guest experiences. The Art Journey features handcrafted bronze sculptures by local artisans Coxper and Fanson Lam, a cinematic artwork by new media artist Hung Keung, and installations by international artisans, including “Golden Illusion” vertical chandeliers made from glass bricks and a “Spirit of Regent Retrospective” screen highlighting excerpts of artwork that graced the walls in the early Regent years.
TOP: Luxurious Axminster carpets elevate Regent Ballroom, creating a sophisticated and inviting atmosphere.
dark bronze planter. Fabricated from hundreds of hand-woven copper and brass wires, each trunk and branch forms twists and turns resembling the Nine Dragons of Kowloon swimming and drifting on Victoria Harbour.
Q: Are there specific criteria used to select the artists and artworks for the hotel’s collection? Please elaborate.
A: Adding a sublime aesthetic to his timeless design, Chi Wing Lo commissioned art pieces showcasing collaborations with acclaimed and emerging Hong Kong artists and local artisans. Imbuing a subdued refinement, the collection highlights local creatives from the city’s burgeoning art scene, as well as works by celebrated international artisans, inspired by Regent Hong Kong’s iconic harbourfront location and heritage. The multi-disciplinary art collection showcases the “Beauty of Contrast.”
For example, for the guestrooms facing the harbour, young Hong Kong metal artisans Nathan Wong and Hazel Lee of Coxper, along with Fanson Lam, have handcrafted bronze bonsai trees to complement Chi Wing Lo’s stone garden, providing a unique foreground and lens to view the majesty of Victoria Harbour.
Coxper also created unique installations just off the Lobby and in The Lobby Lounge. The installation in The Lobby Lounge, entitled “Allure,” features handcrafted metal bonsai trees that give the illusion of organically growing on the harbour as they emerge from the seafoam patina of an oversized
As guests enter the Lobby, they walk through a “Golden Illusion” passageway created by sixteen vertical glass brick screens that resemble floor-toceiling chandeliers inspired by “LiuLi” glass art. For this installation, Chi Wing Lo collaborated with Lasvit, the acclaimed Czech-based concept designer and manufacturer of bespoke glass artworks, objects, and lighting installations, to create the shimmering translucent screens.
Celebrating the “Beauty of Contrast,” a long scroll-inspired screen in the Lobby recalls the spirit and essence of the original art collection that once graced the hotel in the early Regent years, while a cinematic artwork by Hong Kong new media artist Hung Keung creates a contrasting focal point behind the translucent onyx reception counter.
Q: Apart from eco-friendly design elements, what eco-friendly practices does Regent Hong Kong implement in its daily operations?
A: The transformation of Regent Hong Kong exemplifies the preservation and rejuvenation of a legendary Hong Kong hospitality destination while ensuring social responsibility and sustainability are at its heart.
The use of energy-efficient systems, including integrated guestroom controls with motion detectors that control air-conditioning and lighting, has resulted
in energy savings. The self-regulatory temperature system automatically adjusts to optimal comfort levels, enhancing the guest experience while minimising energy consumption.
The NORDAC water filtration system provides pure water throughout the hotel, eliminating the need for plastic bottles. This eco-friendly innovation significantly reduces waste while ensuring guests enjoy high-quality water.
Thoughtful touches showcase the hotel’s dedication to sustainability—from in-room amenities utilising recyclable materials, such as bamboo toothbrushes and organic cotton linens, without compromising luxury. Staff uniforms are made from recycled materials, including plastic bottles and Tencel, an eco-friendly fibre.
Partnerships with local organisations support sustainable initiatives, including food donations to local charities. Homegrown collaborations with local entrepreneurs enrich the dining experience while supporting local businesses with a shared commitment to sustainable practices.
The hotel’s state-of-the-art BMW i7 all-electric limousines help reduce the carbon footprint.
By integrating these sustainable elements, Regent Hong Kong offers a unique, environmentally conscious luxury experience that minimises the hotel’s environmental impact while aligning with the growing demand for eco-conscious hospitality. In recognition of the hotel’s initiatives, Regent Hong Kong has regained EarthCheck Platinum Certification, after being the first Hong Kong hotel and first IHG property globally to achieve this prestigious certification in 2018.
“MY VISION WAS TO CREATE SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE – A DESIGN THAT CAN REPRESENT HONG KONG AND CREATE A SENSE OF PEACE, TRANQUILLITY AND BALANCE WITHIN THE CITY. FROM THE MOMENT OF ARRIVAL, WE ARE SETTING THE TONE FOR A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY – A SEAMLESS SEQUENCE, LIKE A CLEANSING RITUAL PREPARING YOU FOR THE UNEXPECTED HARMONY THAT LIES WITHIN.”
Chi Wing Lo, Visionary Designer of Regent Hong Kong
“TO ACHIEVE THE OVERALL DESIGN OF REGENT HONG KONG, WHICH HAD A SERENITY AND SOFTNESS IN THE COLOR PALETTE, THERE WAS A LOT OF CONCERNS IN USING THE LIGHT EARTH TONE COLOR FOR THE PUBLIC AREAS, INCLUDING THE LOBBY LOUNGE AND REGENT CLUB.”

hotel guests, contributing to the overall guest experience at Regent Hong Kong.
As part of Regent Hong Kong’s transformation, Royal Thai played a key role in elevating the hotel’s design and guest experience through the careful selection and integration of bespoke carpets. Stephen Wong, Senior Executive Vice President for EMEA and APAC at Royal Thai, shares insights into how their carpets have been thoughtfully crafted to align with the hotel’s design vision.
Q: How does floor decoration and design, including the use of Royal Thai carpets, contribute to the overall guest experience at Regent Hong Kong?
A: Particularly for a hotel facility that is over 44 years old with a generous volume of space in the Main Lobby, the use of carpet softens the harshness of the built environment and immediately offers a sense of luxury for a 5-star hotel. For any visitors, the flooring is where guests and patrons walk, even if they are merely passing by, which enhances their visual experience of the space. Floor covering material is one of the most critical factors affecting not only the aesthetic appearance but also the environmental friendliness of a hotel. Carpet is one of the best flooring materials for all areas in a hotel. It provides a luxurious appearance with practical functions of noise reduction and foot comfort for
Q: What specific attributes of Royal Thai carpets were most aligned with the design vision for the hotel, and how did they meet the hotel’s needs?
A: The emphasis of the carpet design, other than the graphics, was the touch and feel on the feet. To the Concept Designer Chi Wing Lo, not only aesthetically should the design, colour, and pattern achieve the original intent, but also the experience by other senses. Royal Thai works closely with the Interior Designer, owner, and the hotel operator to come up with carpet design patterns that go extremely well with the overall design concept, further enhancing the overall aesthetic appearance of the hotel design.
Q: How do the hand-tufted carpets contribute to the design and comfort of the guestrooms?
A: One of the design items, out of many, that had not changed since the completion of the Mock-Up Rooms was the guestroom carpet, because even during the Mock-Up Rooms review, the owner was already very satisfied with the feel of the texture and cushioning of the carpet on bare feet. To the owner, the luxuriousness of the carpet is part of the elements that are essential to offer 5-star comfort for the guests. Hand-tufted carpet has a relatively higher density when compared with other carpet types. It also offers higher design flexibility for customers to select the pattern. Moreover, with its high density,

together with our high-quality carpet cushion pad, it provides hotel guests with a supreme foot comfort feeling in the guestroom.
Q: Can you elaborate on any particular design or performance attributes of Royal Thai carpets that have proven especially beneficial in hightraffic areas like the lobby lounge, executive lounge, and the ballroom (which features Axminster carpets)?
A: To achieve the overall design of Regent Hong Kong, which had serenity and softness in the colour palette, there were a lot of concerns about using the light earth tone colour for the public areas, including The Lobby Lounge and Regent Club. However, with proper maintenance and care, there have not been any performance or quality issues with the public area carpet since the soft opening in December 2022. As Royal Thai is both a vertically and horizontally integrated manufacturer, we have no bias towards promoting a particular carpet product type. Therefore, we can always provide the right product to our customer according to their needs. Moreover, we specialise in custom design, so we can offer unique design patterns to each of our individual customers in order for them to have the unique character of their property. For high-traffic areas, we offer highdensity product types in busy patterns and custom colours, increasing the soil-hiding function of the carpets, which is beneficial to the business of the hotel.
