Its unassuming elegance conceals intricate craftsmanship, showcasing a delicate seam finish that adds depth, akin to a modern Intermezzo Chesterfield sofa. Versatile in fabric or leather, framed or four-legged, this masterpiece brims with understated allure while fitting into any space, rendering it an ultimate allrounder in furniture sophistication.

Cappellini’s Branch Table is a synergy of die-cast aluminum elements, woven seamlessly to form a stable and lightweight table with an intricate and sturdy base. A seat family imbued with Japanese-inspired structural elements, the chairs and sofas play with rounded volumes and sleek profiles, camouflaging intricate designs within outward simplicity. Woven cord backrests in ecru, dark brown, and oil green echo cane, admitting light and air. Resting on natural teak or mahogany bases, these ethereal yet tactile pieces marry romance with contemporary design for relaxed settings.

Flexform’s Kobo, a table echoing diverse cultures, displays strength and simplicity reminiscent of African traditions. Its design layers a robust top over turned legs, accentuating craftsmanship and wood textures. NARRATORS OF INTERIOR STORIES WE EVOLVE AWARD-WINNING SPACES AND EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES FOR HOTEL GUESTS, CREATING BEAUTIFUL INTERIORS THAT THRIVE ON THEIR LOCAL CULTURE AND HERITAGE.

HDP was founded in 2005 by business partners and couple Manuela Mannino, an Italian architect, and British interior designer Nicholas J. Hickson. “We initially met in London, but we started the company in Italy first, opening the studio in reaction to being offered a project – the Pragelato Resort for the Turin 2006 Olympic Games,” says Nick. “We opened a Limited company and when the project concluded we formalised our position in Italy. We didn’t have hospitality experience in the beginning, and it was a bit of challenge for me, leaving the UK and going to work in Italy. Since then, the studio has gone on to design hotels, restaurants, and residences, building up a portfolio of resorts, city and boutique hotels all over the world. Their creative team works comfortably in the demanding discipline of international hospitality design. “We aim to be flexible and able to react to the fast-moving waters of the hospitality sector. Our approach springs from an endless creative curiosity. As designers we are in effect, storytellers, this is the foundation of a clear, appealing, and distinctive concept and narrative, in short, we create evocative interiors, hotels, and restaurants.” Manuela graduated from Turin Polytechnic in Italy in 1993. An accomplished architect, she has worked in product design, interior refurbishments and conversions for private clients. She brings a contemporary approach to THDP projects, combining her skills in design and concept building, she takes care of the aesthetic link between architectural function and decorative details. Manuela has also been a tutor at the Chelsea College of Arts for the Hotel Interior Design short course, an appointment she says has, “stimulated our office and engaged us with upcoming trends, hotel owners, and operators.” She describes teaching as being an enriching experience: “You learn a lot from young minds that can dream with no boundaries. Students are curious animals and have the freshest ideas.”

Nick has been a British furniture and interior designer for more than 34 years. He has worked with high-end interior residential and commercial projects for international clients and developers in exclusive areas of London and worldwide. He’s probably best known for his experience with hotel interior architecture, schematic planning, FF&E selection and custom design and procurement strategies. “Detail is the design for me, so sometimes I start an interior design project with a small furniture detail and build upon that,” he says. “I think having studied furniture design and construction can really help you understand the language inherent in design, and with that language you are more able to describe what you mean.” Describing how they find their inspiration for a new project, Manuela and Nick say they focus on a strong visual narrative based on locally inspired details. “For us, every space has its very own place in history. If not, we will make one,” says Manuela. “When we start a project, we take time to deeply look at every location, each hotel, each building, to walk its streets, talk to its neighbours, taste its food and finally to uncover its story within. It’s the narrative that will create an enduring THDP concept, insulated from fluctuating fashions and distant from trends, whilst giving the owner a commercial competitive advantage. Our mission is to tell this story, to take it, to form it into a design experience, a way for each interior and every hotel to express itself both authentically and creatively.” Of course, most important is the guest, and the couple point out that their projects are always guest-driven with the experience playing second fiddle to nothing else. “It should always be about the guest experience. Every hotel owner knows that. Owner’s taste is subjective, what really counts is to give guests a remarkable experience and generate a word of mouth. Hotels today are places to live in and experience, which designers can define and create, guests don’t simply stay in hotels.”

he opening of the Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars marks a key milestone in Hyatt’s strategic growth in the capital as the ninth Hyatt hotel in the city. In the last five years, Hyatt has increased its brand presence in the UK from five to 13 properties, with six of those based in London. The 204-key Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars is the 14th property in the country, demonstrating the United Kingdom as a priority growth market within its diverse and evolving brand portfolio. The building and the location Housed in a grade II listed building on the former grounds of King Henry VIII’s Bridewell Palace, Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars claims a prime spot in London’s business and leisure district, home to global corporations, influential businesses, and law firms. Guests will be able to enjoy convenient access to all that the capital has to offer, with Blackfriars Underground and railway stations just a few minutes away. Many of London’s most popular attractions including St Paul’s Cathedral, Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe are also within walking distance from the hotel.

In line with the Hyatt Regency brand ethos, the hotel has been intuitively designed for productivity and peace of mind, with an environment for guests to work, connect or relax. Well-appointed guest rooms and suites boast contemporary finishes, high-end amenities, and dedicated workspaces. Three dynamic and diverse food and beverage concepts are poised to become new local culinary destinations. Meanwhile a trio of versatile group spaces offer to host a wide range of meeting and events in this desirable central London location. Guests also benefit from access to a 24-hour state-of-the-art fitness centre. The design inspirations Designed by THDP, the hotel’s interiors are influenced by its local history. The building’s past life as one of King Henry VIII’s royal palaces is referenced in the materials used throughout the hotel, with marble ceramics and gold finishes evoking its former regality. With Fleet Street, the historic hub of printing and publishing, just around the corner, Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars pays homage to the craftsmanship

of the trade through the bespoke artwork inspired by the art of newspaper printing that adorns its walls. The overall concept is a tribute to London’s iconic landmarks and details. References around the building recall street corners, underground details, patterns and window partitions that the guest can find by exploring a little. “The geometry of the Grade II listed building inspired us during the design process. We took elements from the facade such as the cast iron elements, the ceramic cladding pattern and the window partitions and developed them to create a unique reference with the exteriors”, says Nick Hickson, THDP’s co-founder and head design of the project. The colour palette is play on the “greens of London”. Throughout the area and famous London landmarks, the colour green is a constant feature throughout the city. The aim for THDP was to use this hue as a familiar symbol people can relate to, feeling the atmosphere of London on the journey from the outside to the guest room.

Guest rooms 204 guest rooms and suites provide impressive views of the listed buildings that once held iconic printing presses, while others offer the chance to marvel at the famous skyline of the city of London. With 10 room categories and up to 753 square feet of space, guests can enjoy the hotel’s modern guest rooms, complemented by ergonomic work areas, rainfall showers and comfortable aesthetics. Here the classic meets contemporary style, with dark wood panelling behind beds, soft furnishings inspiration, green marble details for a luxury feel, exposed open wardrobes, clean lines. Every room features area rugs to define lounge area, full length mirrors, box framed TV and classic British lighting with a modern twist. The bathrooms feature luxury hand crafted tiling, a walk-in shower and a custom vanity unit with wall mounted tap, whilst small the bathrooms feel luxurious and generous. Culinary Experiences THDP designed two innovative food and beverage concepts, set to mark Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars as the new destination for inspired cuisine and mixology. The Chinese Cricket Club fuses traditional techniques and the finest ingredients to offer a contemporary take on Chinese classics. The restaurant is named in honour of the captain of the Shanghai XI cricket team, Feng, who travelled to England in 1857 with his bride, Xiu. When arriving to Blackfriars’ docks, the couple made their way to Limehouse, where Xiu opened the first traditional Chinese restaurant in London. Their legacy lives on in the inviting backdrop of The Chinese Cricket Club and its rich and diverse menu of homemade dim sum and signature specialties. The design elements here are oriental style seating, black ink artworks, fabric hues, boiseries with raffia wallpaper and timber inserts, rosso imperiale marble on the bar tops, tiled and wood flooring, organically shaped lighting elements and decorative wall tiles.

he Hotel is nestled in an amazing location in Cologne’s city heart, being a stone’s throw from the most visited attraction in the city the Cologne Cathedral, a building of superlatives that is the centre and hallmark of this city on the Rhine. The Hilton Cologne lobby, bar and social space were redesigned and re-furbished with a modern, innovative gastronomy concept. The centerpiece is the new ‘Pigeon Post’ - a combination of restaurant, bar and lounge and social working area - with an unusual name and funny details as a clear reference to the history of the building. It was a post office in the early 1950s through to the late 1990s. Later, after a long vacancy, in 2002 it was finally gutted and converted into the Hilton Hotel. The Pigeon Post replaces the Lobby Bar and the previous IceBar. The Pigeon Post Bar & Eatery invites you to enjoy special coffee specialties in the morning, after which it becomes the “Eatery” with a separate entrance for external guests. At lunchtime and in the

evening, there are refined à la carte dishes on the menu - while the bar tempts you with a variety of cocktails and drinks from 5 p.m. The optically chic restaurant & bar was built with a total of 110 seats, with a variety of furnishings, seating options including intimately lit dining areas. The Interior designers implemented the new concept and included some quirky details, typewriters as artworks, mailboxes in which you can leave books and magazines for other guests - you can even choose and send postcards for free. The concept’s Keywords for this project are: charming, fresh, inviting, invigorating characterful & big on fun. The hotel was once home to Cologne’s postal savings bank, a landmark building on the famous Marzellenstrasse. The building’s heritage is the inspiration for the interior design – expressing this vintage vibe, considered, contemporary with fun quirky details. A feature central bar with prominent overhead gantry in wood and copper colors, Table tops are in faux marble effects from Dekton and Neolith expressing the previous functionality of the building and updating the effect to offer a more intimate but contemporary vibe. Seating options in the bar are either at the bar on new Stellar Works bar stools, and custom made half moon cozy booths fabricated by Hagenauer, providing private dining in a more intimate space. Dining/lounge sets of 4 and 2 are for more casual occasions. The interior uses a simple earthy color palette of blue greens, greys drizzled with mustard, and has a unique balance between industrial, vintage and modern styling. Visually attractive textures and materials were chose as guest touch points, visual appeal and durability. “Curating the artwork and accessory package sprang from the narrative of the F&B concept, an early choice was to re-use obsolete German 70’s office equipment and furnishings and to re-appropriate them in a relevant contemporary way.” said Nicholas J Hickson, THDP co-founder. The overall effect was to convey a sense of heritage with a real 1970’s vibe. Vintage mechanical typewriters, light fittings and objet d’art were curated to give an aesthetic appeal and to be a curio or an ornamental talking point for “Pigeon Post” guests.

Artworks were inspired by the buildings history as a post office and represented using various mediums, including mixed media painting, stamp collages, ceramics, wood and digital prints created by local and international artists. Fun, colorful decorative objects, books and curiosities were incorporated for the dressing of the social working area Library. Artworks inspired by collages, typography recalling the graphics of old German post offices, with perching wooden pigeons, screening inspired by typewriter keys were all incorporated to layer the interior. Typewriters are mounted in glass display cases each with a love letters being typed, post boxes and writing counters are positioned to invite guests to pick up a free postcard and write to a loved one or friend – the hotel then posts them for free. The cool relaxed dining area uses dark faux stone for the table tops, seating is framed by rear glass privacy screening with bespoke lighting which is retro illuminated and visible front street. Signage is taken from Post Office Graphics mimicking postal or travel signage – using post marks and postage stamps.

estre is historically considered a place of passage, however its exponential growth can no longer be ignored since the years of the Italian economic miracle, when it moved from a town with just over 20,000 inhabitants to today’s city of 200,000. Mestre is no longer a shadow city of the famous Venice, but a real destination full of historical and contemporary points of interest. In response to this shift, the client’s vision for the new Ambasciatori was to create a city hotel that’s conveniently situated near the renowned Venice, yet not confined by its influence. Collaboratively, THDP embraced this vision and worked on a project that embodies its distinct urban identity, reflecting the hotel’s location and family’s story. In the 1960s, the family owned Hotel Ambasciatori became a favoured destination for numerous Italian movie and TV stars, drawn to its sophisticated and welcoming interiors.

The aim of the new interior design project for the public areas is to revive that glamour past while infusing it with a fresh, contemporary yet comfortable design. The initial experience of arrival should be both surprising and delightful, while also meeting the operational requirements of the hotel. The reception and lobby bar areas, before the renovation, were merged in a large open plan space with no dedicated zones for the check-in area, lobby and bar lounge. Both the reception and bar counter were placed sideways respect to the hotel entrance and both facing the left side of the lobby lounge, not allowing the receptionists and the bar staff to visually communicate with each other. Creating different spaces, that could answer to different needs during the day, was pivotal for the Client along with the request to create a memorable experience for their guests. The reception desk’s design draws inspiration from the building and Mestre city, featuring a linear and monolithic counter clad in Marazzi’s Breccia Capraia tile slab and surrounded by a black metal and glass screen softly lit against a fluted wood panelling to pay homage to the vibrant city landscape.

In front of the reception desk, THDP added a dedicated seating area in support of the check-in operations. This zone offers guests the opportunity to be welcomed while seating on the uniquely designed curved custom and armchairs, all while enjoying the collection of objects and locally sourced artifacts displayed on the bespoke shelving positioned between the desk and the seating space. The lobby shows an exciting and energetic ambiance, boasting an elegant colour palette highlighted by vibrant blues, dark yellows, and black accents. Positioned in the heart of the lobby, the central bar counter island offers guests the freedom to walk around and choose their seating based on individual preferences. Whether it’s unwinding with a local Spritz on the lounges adjacent to the floor-to-ceiling windows or indulging in a light meal while sending emails in the more secluded dining area behind the bar counter. The design ensures versatile options for relaxation and productivity also thanks to the addition of a flexible meeting space, concealed behind a set of rich velvet curtains, with facilities to host 8 to 10 people. The bar lounge features a soft curved bar counter clad with urban inspired brick style greige tiles by Marazzi.

The countertop stands out, featuring a backlit fluted timber and black metal edge that echoes the adjacent reception desk’s finishes. To enhance the architectural details of the space, THDP has incorporated black metal framing as accents around existing columns, newly added artwork, and above the bar counter, boosting the area with a distinct character. The introduction of iconic wallpaper ‘CocktailsFornasetti design’ by Cole & Son on the main wall facing the windows, adds an element of surprise, infusing the bar lounge with an energetic and vibrant backdrop. Meanwhile, the upscale restaurant on the mezzanine level offers a more serene and pared-back atmosphere. The concept for the restaurant revolves around generating a urban vibe, embracing the natural light pouring in through the glazed facade, achieved by adorning the existing windows with decorative metal and amber reeded glass screens, creating intriguing reflections. Pendant lights line the perimeter, ensuring a consistent and enchanting illumination throughout the day and night. Inspired by the verdant trees along the Corso, the earthly colour palette includes shades of forest green, warm browns, and natural tones. The guestrooms are adorned with textile wall coverings, custom-made lighting, and refined joinery, all harmoniously celebrating the generous influx of natural light. These carefully selected natural tone materials with blue and burgundy accents come together to recreate a serene, bright, and warm ambiance, evoking a delightful sense of place and comfort for our guests.

he hotel is beachfront and from all the common areas windows the view is always toward the sea. The building presents most of the room facing the sea allowing the Mediterranean light to enter from the big windows and the guest can enjoy the salty air from the guestroom balcony. The interior design concept was inspired by the natural beauty of the volcanic beaches, the sea, mount Etna’s super-natural presence and the features of the island of Sicily and the ambition was to bring them into the centre of the hotel. By adding local decoration, artworks and colors the goal was to add character, a deep sense of authenticity and a refined and resortbased palette of natural tones with touches of colors of the sea. The lobby was a large open space of over 700sqm meters, previously decorated in a heavy baroque style, the concept from the outset was to re-activate this space, giving it a new heart and focal point – and to be appealing to both guests and to walk-in locals. From the outset THDP considered adding a new lobby bar to the center of the space, being both a visual anchor but also dividing the space and making it feel more intimate. which can hosts all thanks to the different typology of seating. The style is elegant, Mediterranean with sea colors and Taormina’s stone colors melting indoor and outdoor color palette. The reception has been inspired by the Sicilian attitude of welcoming and it has been translated in three large reception desks with dark grey lava top fabricated by Nero Sicilia, the feature rear wall is tiled with hand painted local tiles by La Fauci, the accent decorative lights are from Aromas del Camp and are of copper and rattan, thus from the very beginning of their journey the guest is surrounded by an authentic and local experience. The restaurant Panarea has materials, features, and shapes that reminds guests of antique craftsmanship, incorporating hand painted tiles in the niches at the entrance with traditional motifs from La Fauci. The buffet area has screens featuring irregular but geometric shapes hanged from the ceilings that recall ancient Greek terracotta jars. The artisan tributes continue on the walls covered with a braided woven leather cowhide effect inspired by ancient Greek sandals.

La Sciara Restaurant’s design has been inspired by the existing wall covering of lava stone: the space has the darker tones echoing those of the Mount Etna volcano, the dark ominous stone is counterpointed by the vibrant blue and red glazing – recalling colors of the sea at night, foreboding, dark yet attractive and welcoming. The metalwork in the restaurant is a rich copper tone, accented by rich blue lacquers, and the table top feature rich glazed textures applied with glass onto the lava stone, all by Nero Sicilia. The entire space naturally calls to mind dining in a more elegant and finer restaurant. The new Quintessenza bar is the perfect place to enjoy a beverage with friends old and new in the heart of the lobby, directly next to the screened off guest lifts, the bar welcomes guests who wish to socialize. Both local wines, spirits as well as juices and coffee are all prepared to order in that unique Italian Style.

The bar utilizes local materials to create a new feature in the centre of the lobby space, the bar top from local company Nero Sicilia is a made from volcanic lava stone extracted from the quarries of mount Etna glazed in cracked white glass. The bar fluted and curved front is formed from woven faux leather by Natutex, the rear bar features antique mirror with the joinery finished in Italian Oak and Rattan. The Panarea Restaurant is the place in the morning for breakfast but easily converts during the day to host lunches, special events and dinner in the evening. The new seating offers relaxed arrangements with a mix of table sizes, featured in fabrics reflecting the colors of the sea, visible from the restaurant. THDP also designed high tables, which can be used in the morning for breakfast to display local pastries and in the evening a high table dining experience. The adjustable tables made by Riabita, who also carefully prepared all custom furniture for the project and project managed their execution on site. The custom designed carpeting by THDP is made by Ulster Carpets, the ceiling lighting are re-purposed light fittings from a hotel in Milan owned by the client – made in Murano.

ocated in a strategic position, in one of the most iconic and ancient neighbourhoods of the city: the Rione Monti, proudly the first district of Rome, a dynamic and eclectic artery that develops around the Via Urbana and Piazza Esquilino, on which stands the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. This atmosphere with a retro flavor, combined with the climbing on the terracotta facades, the pots of plants left simply along the sidewalk of the streets with the typical Roman San Pietrini, was the greatest inspiration for the interior design concept, created for the hotel by the THDP studio, London, but with Italian roots and designers. An accurate philological research has guided the entire project of conversion of the two pre-existing buildings, with the aim of combining the Roman rhythms and lifestyle with the functionality of a hotel and establishing a continuous dialogue with the city.

The main entrance is located on the main façade of the historic building overlooking Piazza Esquilino, on the corner with Via Urbana. The common parts include the “Mit” bar & café overlooking Piazza Esquilino, with an outdoor seating area, a Mamalia restaurant equipped with an open kitchen and wine tasting area. At the eighth floor the Mun rooftop bar & panoramic terrace with direct views of Santa Maria Maggiore abbey, as well as three modular meeting rooms and a Technogym equipped fitness room, with natural light and overlooking the inner courtyard furnished with planters and possibility of outdoor exercise. MiT Food & Coffee Brewery is a place with access also from the outside on Piazza dell’ Esquilino aimed at both hotel guests and locals and tourists, having a meeting point between city life and the hotel. A welcoming location with a retro touch in design, rattan outdoor chairs and tables, dynamic, vibrant and modern from breakfast to happy hour with creative and yet typical italian quick lunch and coffees. The Sky bar Mùn is located on the eighth floor on a covered interior and a terrace that offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Santa Maria Maggiore abbey sitting on the tallest point of the Esquilino hill. MÙN Rooftop Cocktail Bar is characterized by a contemporary, but not stylized design, with a feeling of a temporary summer outdoor bar. The walls are finished in a dark ochre plaster, reflecting the view of the facades outside, stretching to the west views of Rome. THDP created also a warm decorative garden lighting effect, by selecting outdoor rusty poles and wall lights by Il Fanale, who supplied most of the brass and metal lighting for the project through the specialist contractor Gomiero.

The colours chosen for the hotel are warm, rich and natural to be also aligned with the Double Tree casual look. The walls are left quite bear, finished with a concrete spatula effect. The flooring is custom designed with big slabs of walnut antiqued travertine with a central courtyard paved with squared 10x10 cms mixed tonalities of travertines. The orange and ochre fabric shades fade into the delicate travertine to reach the tones of the green of the Tiber River. The red of the facades of the distressed facades, the porphyry of the entrances of the churches and the traditional “sampietrini”are blinded every day during sunset creating magical effects of lightand shadows. The use of these shades creates a link with the external environment, maintaining an internal chromatic continuity with the city on the outside. The layering of materials and colours inspires the use of neutral but full-bodied colours in interiors characterized by the use of natural materials such as wood, stone, strong plasters, lime plasters, earthy colors, with contemporary accents of brushed metal, bronze and copper for the furniture, which has been designed with a minimalist approach to decoration. The hotel consists of 133 rooms of different types: 38 Guest Rooms of which 7 Accessible Room, 71 Superior Room of which 4 Family Room, 16 Deluxe Room, 7 Junior Suites of which two with terrace and finally 1 One Bedroom Suite. All bright and with a contemporary design, someof the rooms include a private terrace and panoramic views of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. All rooms have large walk-in showers, comfortable beds,smalldesk, free WiFi, minibar, courtesy line, tea kettle and coffee. The unique design and style details combine with technological equipment such as LCD 40’’ TVs, or dedicated attentions such as Lavazza espresso machines, to offer a pleasant and relaxing stay, without sacrificing comfort.

hrough this project, THDP’s desire is to create the perfect haven for the curious travelers that want to dive deep into the secrets of one of the most fascinating cities in the world. By restoring these apartments, THDP have created a luxury space to live when visiting Rome; a serene yet enchanting space to unwind after long days of exploring. The three places of intervention are distributed in 3 areas that differ from each other for history and day/night life. Although they tell different stories, they’re still linked by the same past, yet each of them has developed its own identity as a borough. The first one, Trastevere is a Young Rome, famous for its nightlife, especially outdoors. The alleys, the fountains, and the clothes hanging outside frame a fresh, sparkling and vital life, and here magic is born. The second one is the monumental Ancient Rome, situated really close to the Colosseum and watershed between 3 of the seven hills, Esquilino, Colle Oppio and Celio. The third one is Noble Rome, the Rome of palaces, antique dealers and art galleries. An elegant Rome that, when viewed from the windows and terraces, opens up the perspectives to an exclusive and opulent dimension.

Trastevere – Young Rome “La Roma Giovane” Trastevere is not only famous for its historicity, but also for being one of the busiest centers of the city nightlife. The colours and materials here are inspired by the Trastevere district: lively, warm and welcoming, rich in shades and eclectic. Therefore, the use of bright colors and original textures materially express the soul of the place. The apartments are composed of 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms (two of which are en-suite), an open plan living, dining and kitchen area and a spacious entrance. The intent is to keep as much existing flooring as possible as a sustainable choice, and yet to retain the balance among the new and existing floor finishes while respecting the design concept. The layout of the living area is casual and focused on function with a shelving element separating the food preparation area from the lounge area. The lounge enjoys a large corner snug sofa with a built-in double bed for that extra guest.

Colosseo – Ancient Rome “La Roma Antica” Colosseo is located in one of the most ancient districts in Rome whose origins go back to prehistoric times, when it was nothing more than a rural path used by local populations. The colours are neutral: black and white like the ancient decorations of the surrounding monuments. A game of contrasts to highlight the volumes of the apartments in an important historical context, and to create unique environments with a strong and decisive contemporary character. The entire building lays its foundations on Roman ruins, ancient remains of the prisons that connected with the nearby Colosseum that can still be visited by going down to the basement. The furnishings of the apartments will align with the elements already present in the entrance and on the various floors, so as to create a stylistic continuum for the visitor.

Piazza Navona – Noble Rome “La Roma Nobile” This neighborhood was created to establish a quick connection between the monumental and administrative center of the city and the new residential districts beyond the Tiber. The area is sumptuous and elegant, full of palaces, monumental churches and decorated interior courtyards. Both condominiums boast large terraces from which you can enjoy the 360 degree view of Rome, with the opportunity to observe all the most important landmarks of the city. Here the tone is raised using more dramatic colors and more precious materials, both hard and soft. The environment is dark as in the old noble palaces, also using modern furnishings here.

ompleted in 1919, on the threshold of its 101st anniversary the complex has been renewed by the London-based studio THDP with a project offering insights into the future and a look back to the past. “The initial briefing strived to achieve a visible and perceived renewal, while retaining the original internal architectural structure and maintaining the high-quality furnishings as part of the former design project by the architect Lorenzo Bellini” – architect Manuela Mannino from THDP explains. The Concept The original thermal spring is the tank-shaped crater from which clean water renewed at intervals of six hours flows with a 37.5 degrees constant temperature. As the water descends towards the Mill, it cools down and the sulphur crystalizes, thus rendering the water brighter and purer and giving it a celestial colour due to the presence of crystalized sulphur.

The water of Saturnia originates from the rain that falls on Mount Amiata, finding erosive underground paths of travertine and eventually re-emerging from the crater after 40 years, hence resulting in small bubbles and continuous circular movements on the tank. The inspiration for the concept arises from the favorable natural condition. The earth, the air, and the water modify the elements, the light, the temperature. “We have employed terms such as reflection, corrosion, erosion, layering, ripples to convey the visual and emotional language of interior design” The waterfalls of the Mill have been the inspiration behind the design project of the reception area, realized in collaboration with local artisans such as the Ragnini workshops from Pitigliano – who crafted oxidized tables and bronzed handles – and with experienced craftsmen who obtained corroded metals and sulphur dense water from the processing of liquid metals.

Hotel & Lobby The property features – due to its position on the territory with respect to the famous spring – two distinct settings, connected between large common areas such as the lobby and reception. On the one hand, THDP can find the famous spring of sulfur water while, on the other, the serenity and the intimacy of the surrounding greenery. The first impact is constituted by the entrance, whose centerpiece is the insertion of the insertion of a single large central door, a focal fireplace conveying warmth and hospitality, the welcome desk and a living area. The existing central window remains unchanged, framing the olive tree with seats covered with outdoor fabrics. A “pop-up” bar has been included in the project in order to provide a multifunctional and flexible area to serve the best wines and a social table eno-gastronomic experiences and tastings. A “living wall” characterized by green provides the backdrop for the culinary events, beside shielding the entrance to the buffet room behind. The central patio is furnished with a blend of classic and contemporary furnishings, modern flair that enhance and dress up the internal garden located around the olive tree. Accessories, artworks and flooring evoke and continue the emphases of the

surrounding area, namely the spa. The purpose is to maintain the original furnishings as far as possible by adding new pieces or additions, thus creating a fresher and more attractive space. The strong and intimate link with the territory is recalled by the terracotta pieces reminiscent of Tuscan workers of that time, the warm colors, the existing travertine and the surrounding green, thus providing a comprehensive vision of what Maremma is. “Enhancing the feeling of the coming, with the renovation of the entrance and the porch through a greater transparency effect between interior and exterior and a better lighting on the entrance with suspended lanterns and two large lightening installations that reproduce on the ceiling reflections of water. Creating a sense of vertical perspective through a sculpture designed to recall the waterfalls of the mill and the oxidation of the water, by overlaying several finished metal plates with different oxidation effects and backlit. Creating a point of encounter between classic and contemporary by mixing existing furniture with new outdoor pieces by Emu and Talenti, along with two large lounge sofas around the lobby’s central fireplace”. These are the objectives set out by Manuela Mannino with regard to the common areas contained in the project.

Guest Rooms The 124 guest rooms have undergone an intensive renovation program. The focus is on the guest comfort, the services and the production of an interior that reflects the softer, more relaxed interior narrative style of the public areas. Creative details customize these rooms, such as the new upholstery that covers the wardrobes, designed exclusively for the resort by THDP and the artistic project of the paintings, evocative of the colors of the spa, created by the artists Due Alberi of Rome. The fabrics and upholstery are all renewed with shades of turquoise, petroleum and blue, in order to evoke the feeling of well-being given by the spring water. The color palette for the rooms is inspired by the colors of the Maremma landscape: the rooms appear in a fresh and innovative style while keeping the features of a recognizable Tuscan style, giving rise to a timeless design. The inspiration for the design of the furniture comes from the Tuscan leather tradition, with reinforced metal details in the sideboard mini bar covered in leather, hangers with leather supports and a transparent wardrobe with printed motifs de jouy agreste designed exclusively for the hotel THDP.

t is undeniable that Venice is a source of endless inspiration. A city built upon water, with extraordinary palaces that loom over winding canals seems like a fragment of one’s imagination. Venice is a paragon of culture and boundless beauty, with a magical atmosphere and rich history. The palace home to this apartment is located in the heart of the San Marco district, between Piazza San Marco and Rialto Bridge. The name of the area originates from its famous workshops, which specialize in the handling of tin and pewter. For THDP, it has been crucial to honor the district’s fascinating past. The historical buildings of San Marco each carry a distinct character, with their decorative exteriors having formed the foundation of THDP’s project. Although more contemporary than other Palace’s overlooking the Grand Canal, the THDP facade still displays striking historical features. The mullioned windows, arches and shutters remain and have been painstakingly preserved by THDP. The typically Venetian cone-shaped fireplaces have been carefully reconstructed to their original state, made possible by the discovery of an old photograph found by the interior designers themselves.

The intricately decorated stucco ceilings overlooking the living rooms, along with the original stairwell, steps and railings have been left untouched, preserving their former integrity. During renovation, a focus for THDP was refining staircase. By restoring the original wall appliqués and upgrading the lift doors with elegant marble effect plaster and a surrounding bronze grid, the space has been greatly elevated. Each apartment features an entrance hallway; a living room/kitchen area; two bedrooms (one of which is fitted with an en suite) and two bathrooms. All main rooms enjoy a breathtaking view of one of Venice’s most renowned canals, the Canale De La Fava. Starting with the living rooms, the style is modern yet ornate, with neutral walls and furnishings that feature mustard, gold, teal, and magenta accents. The purpose of this color scheme is to create a tranquil environment with a lighter palette, whilst also expressing the richness of classic Venetian interiors with some vibrant features.

With a focus on Italian design, much of the decor has been sourced from Veneto or the local area. Notable brands include; Miniforms, Rubelli, Cantori, Vibieffe, Bolzan, Italamp, Siru, Flukso, Besana, Zucchetti, Florim managed by general contractor of the Concreta furnishings and by the Pasqualucci company. For the bedrooms, the wall colour recalls Venice’s sea water, which is contrasted against the rust created on the metal portals when corroded. For the beds, a quilted, padded headboard with most of them featuring integrated brass tables, will overlook each residential-style Bolzan bed. In the main bedrooms, the wardrobes will feature glass panes opening into a wallpaper lined closet. The wallpaper features a marbled paper-effect digital print, a Turkish technique brought to Venice by recently deceased Venetian artist Alberto Valese, who founded a small shop in Campo Santo Stefano. The Kitchens have a more minimalistic design, with dark green handle-less doors designed by Fenix, that feature grooves and a black plinth. The smaller Kitchen appliances have been designed by Smeg; their vintage curved design compliments the more angular structure of the room. As for the accessories, the Baloton-effect glasses and vases are by IVV, and the vintage pewter cutlery and vintage pots are by Mepra.

The entrance hallway will feature an elegant wallpaper framed with white molded profiles, pro-duced by Orac Decor. For the more decorative elements, accessories by Les Ottomans and Arcade Murano have been selected, as well as Murano mirrors by Barbini and a console with a dark green crackle effect top by Cantori. In the bathrooms, the classical Venetian style meets modern materials and sanitation. Here again, the colour palette recalls eighteenth-century wooden furnishings with the use of pastel colours. The wall cladding is by Florim; a stoneware created with highprecision technology that is embossed with a loomed fabric from the Rubelli archive collection. Florim have also designed the floor and wall coverings, made in from porcelain and adorned with a seeded effect. The rooftop suite features a terrace, constructed as an extension of the living area. Overlooking the building’s interior, the balcony offers a breathtaking view over Venice’s rooftops, providing some escape from the bustling streets below.

otel Mediterraneo is located in one of the most beautiful areas of the Sorrento coast, Sant’Agnello, characterized by a breath-taking view overlooking the Gulf of Naples. In the past, Sorrento and its surrounding areas were already coveted destinations, in fact tourism has very old roots here. The town was one of the Grand Tour destinations, the journey of young aristocrats through various European countries, between the 18th and 19th century to complete their cultural formation. Many illustrious visitors exalted the beauty of Torquato Tasso’s town, which continues to fascinate tourists from all over the world. In April 2023 the new Oltremare Lounge Bar was inaugurated. Located in the hotel lobby, the project brief envisaged the restyling of the lobby spaces and the creation of a destination lobby bar in addition to the popular skybar used during the summer season. A bar space that could also be used during the winter months and that celebrated the view of the Gulf of Sorrento.

The renovation involved the creation of an informal and welcoming check-in area. The waiting areas are transformed into an elegant and refined living room with a sofa with sinuous shapes and armchairs with details in natural wood and fabrics declined in a marine palette, with tones from aqua green to ultramarine blue. The existing arches are embellished with bronze frames and showcases with a collection of objects and artefacts made by local artisans and collected by the hotel owners over the last 50 years. The memorabilia collection is inspired by the Grand Tour, where Sorrento represented one of the unmissable stops starting from the 19th century. From the lobby space, previously joined in a large room with arches, a small room has been created for private events with a double-sided fireplace that separates the room from the lobby, a chandelier with blown Murano glass waves by Italamp illuminate the space creating unexpected reflections. Blue velvet drapes frame all the arches creating theatrical wings that open towards the ‘Oltremare’ lobby bar. The walls of the bar are covered in custom wallpaper by Jannelli and Volpi, where the blue line of the sea, visible from the large windows on the terrace, continues into the interior spaces, giving guests the sensation of immersing themselves in the blue waters, I mean of the Mediterranean Sea.

The bar counter is covered in natural brushed brass, characterized by a light dark patina that will oxidize over time, giving the surface unexpected nuances. The back of the counter is characterized by the overlapping of panels in bronze, brass and ribbed glass which overlap the bottles creating a real artwork. The transparency in its central part allows daylight to illuminate the room and during the evening hours to create interesting views from the outside. The domes in blue burnished bronze are also made to measure and embellished with an internal coating in gold leaf. The bar also has a fixed DJ station for more social evenings. The palette of fabrics and finishes is declined in all the shades of the sea. Upon arrival, sand and rope shades were selected as a suggestion upon arrival at the beach, also represented by the custom-designed carpet by Besana, where the waves of the sea meet the sand of the coast. The eco-leather of the Artnet stools have a shagreen print and the tables have a laminan finish with silver reflections that recall the skin of the blue fish of the Mediterranean Sea.

Q: What special factors do you need to consider when creating spaces for hotels, and for an hotel lobby? A: At the core of our design philosophy is the emphasis on layout, which serves as the starting point for all our projects. The initial experience of arrival should be both surprising and delightful, while also meeting the operational requirements of the hotel. Q: What is your design approach when you start to work on the project? A: We tend to take a very holistic design approach to each of our projects, envisaging the key elements of a design in our first brainstorming meeting. We envisioned the new hotel lobby and Oltremare bar lounge as beautiful and welcoming spaces, layered by lots of interesting pieces, colours, textures and things that would entice and excite the customer coming through the hotel doors. The hotel lobby and Oltremare Bar lounge colour palette was inspired by the breath-taking sea view of the bay of Sorrento and includes deep blue tones, seaglass greens, sandy natural tones, and brass accents. A bespoke wallpaper was specially designed for this project, allowing us to extend the blue line between the Mediterranean Sea and the sky, that you can admire from the windows, to the walls of the Oltremare Bar lounge where guests can embrace the beauty of the surroundin, while enjoying an aperitivo or dancing all night during the dj sets night. Q: What was the biggest challenge for this project? A: The lobby and bar lounge were originally merged in a large and white open space featuring overscale archways and high ceilings, making it operationally difficult to manage and lacking a strong identity

and design direction. Creating different spaces, that could answer to different needs during the day, was pivotal for the Client along with the request to create a memorable experience for their guests. In response to the project brief, the existing archways have been framed by rich drapes and filled with luxurious glass displays that showcase a collection of objects inspired by the Grand Tour, an educational trip across Europe popular for your aristocrats during the 17th and 19th century. Sorrento was one of the most anticipated destinations of this glorious journey. A bespoke fireplace and a set of glass doors lead now to a new secret room with antique mirrored screens, a Murano glass chandelier inspired by the sea waves and a large dining table for special gatherings. Behind the main archway, centre of the scene, guests can discover a newly open American style bar, that features a 5meter long natural brass bar counter, mesmerizing sea views and a lush interior ideal for people-watching, where champagne and signature Oltremare cocktails are among the specialties. Q: What is your design approach when working on a partial hotel renovation, rather than all areas hotel design project? A: When approaching a renovation of a specific area, within a bigger hotel project, it is important to design a space that can complement and uplift the existing, that can celebrate what is unique from the previous design, while adding a contemporary and new layer to it. Longevity for a project is always key, a timeless project is a project that finds his roots in the past but with a vision invested in the future, able to please the generations of today and tomorrow.
