THE ART OF INSPIRED SPACES Whether it’s a cosy boutique hotel or a luxurious resort, every detail of the interior design plays a crucial role in enhancing the guest’s stay and leaving a lasting impression.

nspired design is an essential part of today’s hospitality spaces. A well-designed interior can significantly heighten a guest’s experience by cultivating an ambience that is inviting and warm. In this issue, we delve into some of the most charming and inspiring hotel spaces by AB Concept to illustrate how hospitality design sets the tone for a memorable guest experience while capturing the essence of the hotel’s brand and values. Some of AB Concept’s best works include noteworthy projects at the Four Seasons. For example, the welcoming day-to-night space, ARGO, at Four Seasons Hong Kong, which boasts panoramic views of Victoria Harbour. Similarly, Yun House at Four Seasons KL is a glamorous space that showcases a pewter panelled screen inspired by the Four Gentlemen in Chinese art. In addition to these exquisite designs, AB Concept also delivered an exceptional grand garden manor concept at Waldorf Astoria in China. Spaces aside, we also highlighted an array of impressive design elements aimed at elevating interiors to new heights of style. In this year’s Milan Design Week, B&B Italia continues to enhance its contemporary lifestyle philosophy by introducing four outdoor collections: Cordoba Outdoor, Flair O’ Outdoor, Nooch and Allure O’ Outdoor. At the same time, during the recent Euroluce 2023 exhibition, Preciosa Lighting’s Crystal Beat installation commanded attention with its captivating features that stimulate our senses in a truly sublime way. Overall, it’s clear that the world of hospitality interior design is constantly evolving and pushing boundaries as more and more designers are embracing new technologies and materials, experimenting with innovative layouts and lighting schemes, and placing a greater emphasis on sustainability and wellness. Designed to embody luxury and sophistication, Arbiter exudes an abundance of material while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic with its precise, almost archetypal lines. Purposefully constructed with a sense of weightlessness and an inviting silhouette, Arbiter’s production technique is emblematic of the renowned Maxalto’s signature style, characterised by a steel frame and cold-foamed polyurethane structure. Two depths in various configurations – with or without a chaise-longue to meet different spatial demands.

With intricate details adorning its sumptuous shape, The Newood Lido outdoor collection leverages the inherent beauty of wood to elevate outdoor lounging to new heights of pleasure. Central to the Newood Lido family are three standout pieces: the Newood Light chair, the Newood Relax armchair, and a new two-seater sofa. Each piece is crafted from solid iroko, while cushions are upholstered with the latest outdoor fabrics from the LIDO Cappellini collection for a plush appeal.

Moooi’s Knitty Lounge Chair by Nika Zupanc was quite the scene stealer at Milan Design Week 2023. With its larger-than-life presence, the chair’s visual appeal is further heightened by its luxurious knitted fabric adorned with a mesmerising diamond-quilt pattern in multiple colour options. At its base, woven yarn is meticulously crafted into a chunky basket weave to enhance the chair’s tactile qualities, offering an unmatched sensory experience that elevates relaxation to a whole new level.

If you’re happy and you know it, it’s probably the Happy Jack sofa, as it’s designed to evoke a feeling of cosy joy no matter where it’s placed. With its gentle curves and inviting contours, this designer piece comes with generously-sized cushions to inspire a feeling of ease and informality. This cosy sofa is also engineered to provide unparalleled comfort – the backrest and armrests provide ample support, making it a highly versatile modular piece.

Thanks to a distinctive fusion of a tightly woven cord and solid wood, the Crono armchair has been reimagined into a chic outdoor seating piece. It’s a beautiful showcase of superior craftsmanship, leaving admirers in awe of the smooth finish of solid iroko material and the intricate hand-braided cord of the backrest. The armchair’s iroko structure is also available in a variety of elegant finishes, while the woven polypropylene cord is available in numerous colours.

Modern tech meets tradition with the outdoor rendition of Cassina’s Leggera chair. Its classic wooden frame is replaced by cutting-edge austenitic stainless steel, crafted with the same technique used to fashion parts for Formula One racing vehicles. Sinuous, organic-inspired lines emblematic of the post-World War II era are the hallmarks of the exquisite Lilum sofa. Crafted for convivial moments, this laid-back seat harmoniously co-exists with its more formal counterparts while catering to diverse spatial requirements. The construction technique employed in Lilum merges modern innovation and timeless craftsmanship: the backrest is technologically moulded into a flawless profile, while the base is crafted with glued laminated wood.

Giorgetti’s new SKIRT stool is a testament to innovative design that pays homage to the 1960s. Its fluid form, reminiscent of a delicate line on paper, is a distinguishing feature that matches the generous proportions of the leather backrest to recreate the graceful flow of a skirt – hence its name. To complete the aesthetic, topstitching lines the edges of the stool, while its solid ash wood base features a ring-shaped structure for total stability.

Sleek and sharp, the Frank table is an eye-catching piece of furniture that goes beyond the ordinary. With its connected classic shapes, Pallana’s design is dynamic and adaptable, allowing you to playfully use it as a task light for any occasion. Whether you’re working, eating, cooking, or helping your kids with homework, you can spin the ring lights of Pallana to assist you. This versatile fixture is available in two muted colours and can match any interior style and colour palette.

Inspired by Japanese Haiku, Flexform’s Haiku collection takes cue from the spontaneity and simplicity of this Oriental poetic style to create a series of seating elements that involve a meticulous process of deduction aimed at uncovering the very essence of the object. In addition, cowhide was skillfully tailored to create understated upholstery for the seat, backrest, and armrests. The Crystal Beat installation by Preciosa Lighting makes it all possible, stealing the show at the recent Euroluce 2023 with its mesmerising features that awaken our senses in a sublime manner. Ingeniously designed by Preciosa’s Creative Directors, Michael Vasku and Andreas Klug, the Crystal Beat art installation features an intricate interplay of illuminated layers to evoke an immersive ambience that blends sound and light. Coupled with beautifully curated music, this composition of light and sound captivates visitors, beckoning them to indulge in a truly captivating and engaging journey. “The installation at EUROLUCE synchronises a three-dimensional sound system with a spatial crystal light installation resulting in an ultimate immersive experience. As music plays from one part of the installation, the rhythm will follow, giving the impression you are “seeing” the sound,” Preciosa elaborates. Crystal Beat is one of the unique derivations from Preciosa’s latest Signature Design, Crystal Grid, which was presented at the fair. An outstanding feature of this piece is its hand-blown bubbled crystal tubes which are geometrically suspended in an illuminated gridded structure, allowing it to envelop small and

large spaces with light and energy. However, at the heart of the installation lies a series of crystal tubes, a key component crafted by hand with precision and care. Each tube boasts an organic, textural appearance, thanks to the bubbles that imbue it with a distinctive look. To further enhance the installation’s beauty, five elegant metal surface finish options are offered, enabling the crystal tubes’ appearance to be uniquely customised to perfection. Whether a bright or matte finish is preferred, the end result will complement diverse design specifications and create a truly personal experience. ounded in Hong Kong in 1999, architect Terence Ngan and interior designer Ed Ng created a design studio called AB Concept. Over 20 years, the duo has built a global portfolio of commercial and residential interiors, bringing the values of their clients to life in physical space with soul. B Concept founders Ed Ng and Terence Ngan’s private residence in Bangkok, Thailand, is a serene oasis infused with decorative Thai elements and inspirations. Inspired by the adventurous and vivacious spirit of the city, the home serves as a resting place and incubator of sensorial stimulation for Ed and Terence in Asia’s foremost creative hub. Bangkok is a city known for its vibrant energy, abundant street food and busy traffic, and a popular destination within the Asia Pacific region for business as well as leisure. Ed and Terence are attracted to the city for its distinct culture, developed and evolved organically without any colonisation, and for the design of this home, drawn from Bangkok’s rich palette of ingredients. Bangkok is a maze of congested streets interrupted by the occasional greenery. Located a few minutes from the highly revered Four-Faced Buddha, the apartment is on the 25th floor of a residential building in the heart of Bangkok.

The renovation process began in 2018 and the refurbishment took approximately two years to complete. With a total area of 200 m2, the apartment consists of a living room, a kitchen, one master bedroom with a den, and an ensuite which includes a walk-in dressing room. The overall design scheme is calming with the addition of ornate details and abundant local materials and decoration. A wide selection of Jim Thompson fabrics has been used throughout the apartment, from wall covering to the drapes, and create a quiet and relaxed interior in contrast to the bustle outside. The bespoke white pewter screens in the living room have been beautifully crafted by a local Thai artist using a hand-hammered technique. The wooden sculpture on the shelf features a mobilised village in Thailand. The large circular lamp in the living room is Fortuny Moda by Mariano Fortuny. Outside the master bedroom, one would not miss the elephant ornament and leaf by Lamont.

Ed and Terence came across the colourful fourposter daybed in a local antique market, and have placed it beneath the window in the master bedroom to perfectly frame the city view and provide an afternoon resting spot. The walls and flooring in both the bathroom and the den are covered in locally customised tiles. The bathroom’s white strikes a sharp and purifying contrast to the city’s colourful backdrop and the den provides an intimate retreat from the concrete jungle outside. The vintage cabinet by Hans Wegner is most notable among the carefully selected furniture pieces. When asked about having a residence in Bangkok, Ed comments, “Hong Kong is commercial. It’s my home, my work; it’s about the system, while Karuizawa is about nature, refinement, and culture. Bangkok is for indulgence; it is about spiciness, craziness, and energy. When you have been serene for a long time, you crave a vivid and energetic lifestyle where people are more expressive. Being in Bangkok feels like adding an ingredient that makes life complete.”

s the lobby naturally receives a high level of traffic, we wanted to enhance its warmth and introduce even more liveliness to the space. We have reworked the concierge and reception areas incorporating advanced technology and breaking the tradition of a long reception counter to disband the barrier between staff and guests to encourage more interaction. The curvature of the lobby enhances the fluidity of the space. ARGO at Four Seasons Hong Kong is a welcoming day-to-night space that serves breakfast and lunch in addition to being a lively evening bar. With panoramic views of Victoria Harbour, the design is inspired by a conservatory. Measuring approximately 255 sqm, the bar accommodates nearly 70 seats, which includes the bar area, a VIP room, as well as the main seating area in the form of a banquet is shaped into a semi-enclosed area with a sense of privacy without compromising the openness and the view of the Victoria Harbour. Guests are greeted in the entrance by a floral bespoke wood inlay wall that leads through to the “conservatory”. Sleek curved metal frames are accented with

small hanging terrarium pendants and complemented by custom ceramic textured wallpaper, while a customized deconstructed chandelier draws one’s eye to the bar. Polished nickel silver were used throughout to bring a sense of warmth without ostentatiousness during the daytime, while at night the mirrored finishing works with the soft lighting to create a sparkling ambience. The main seating area features an invigorating minty colour backdrop covered in custom textured ceramic wallpaper with semi-gloss finishes complemented with mirror details and nickel silver curvature structures with mirrored finishing to adapt to different vibes and functions evolving from the day time to the late night and to convey various experiences. Addressing the challenge of a large pre-existing structural column that sits in the middle of this view, this has now been transformed into an iconic central point that also encourages guests to explore the bar around it. For this focus feature, we created a number of revolving cylinders that wrap around the column; these open gradually to reveal the lovingly-sourced rare spirits behind as day turns to night. As such, an obstruction to the view has become a striking, signature feature and it also solves the conundrum of creating

a space that evolves throughout the day, presenting a varied venue that suits its multiple functions. The bar’s structural feature column, which measures 2.1 meter in diameter, comprises of 136 cylinders measuring from 300 mm to 400 mm wide each, where 72 of them rotate. During the daytime the cylinders are closed, and as the evening approaches the cylinders revolve gradually revealing the stored rare spirits. The VIP room resembles a jewel box; mirrors are interspersed with references to flora and fauna, bringing the conservatory concept to life. The VIP Room features artwork by Raku Inoue, featuring hand-crafted paper-sculptures that were made to reflect the beauty of printed Mother nature with glittering paper insects. The textures of the original sculptures were separated digitally and printed individually on high quality Verona watercolour papers. Afterwards, they were cut-out and then mounted on a base structure to form the shape of the insect. It was the ideal method to recreate the original floral creations without being bound by the ephemerality. The bar takes its name from the Greek myth of Jason and the Argonauts, Argo is the ship on which Jason sails to find the Golden Fleece. Inspired by this story of journey and discovery, the bar aims to serve

as a vessel for innovation and exploration, offering a new and memorable experience that truly embodies the destination bar. This world exploration is not only reflected on the cocktails which includes ingredients harvested from local and overseas farmers such as coffee, honey, cacao, etc that are at risk of becoming endangered due to climate change. Four Seasons Hong Kong has received its first facelift since its opening in 2005. Our goal for the revitalization of Argo is to offer a place backplace for guests to escape from this concrete jungle in the heart of one of the busiest cities in the world. We always feel the back wall of a bar needs to be the focal point: in its previous incarnation the bar was situated at the far end against a wall, but we’ve always thought the stunning Victoria Harbour would make a perfect backdrop to create a bar that truly reflects its unique location. The biggest goal for Argo is to make it a destination bar, Hong Kong does have some, but we felt that at Four Seasons Hong Kong there was the opportunity to make this THE place where locals and international visitors want to come for a vibrant and memorable experience. To create a bar that has a journey of feeling, from the light touch of breakfast, to the intensity of a late evening hotspot, this is a space that truly evolves from day to night through its design.

un House is a Chinese restaurant located on the fifth floor of Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur. Situated in the shadows of the Petronas Twin Towers, the inspiration goal for Yun House is to create an experience for guests to commemorate a fusion of rich Chinese heritage and Malaysian culture. Guests entering Yun House walk into a courtyard reception and greeted by the maitre d’ at an illuminated onyx reception table along with a glamorous pewter paneled screen featuring moulded pattern of plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum, known as the Four Gentlemen in Chinese art, resembling the yearly Four Seasons. Entering through the reception and onto the main dining room, a tea vestibule celebrates the Chinese heritage of tea pouring. Featuring ceiling-high metal structures where shelves along both sides of the

corridor display pewter tea canisters often found in Malaysian homes. Lighting fixtures hang from the ceiling attracting patrons to taste traditional Chinese tea poured from behind clear panels. Passing through grey ceiling-high doors, guests move onto the a la carte dining rooms that reflect Malaysia’s culture of congregating in a courtyard as a common area to engage in conversation. Pewter greys are used as the space’s base colour with a touch of brightly coloured floral and rose fabric on the dining chairs contrasting with cotton white table clothes. An ode to colonial Malaysian homes, shutters that open to mirror tall French windows line hang from the windows to represent traditional louvres that allow light and air flow. Ceiling lightings form an oval shape creating the feeling of congregating in a courtyard. A greenery wall mural in the dining rooms captivates guests’ eyes. While mounted

dark railings on the top of the windows draw guests’ eyes to the view of Kuala Lumpur. Five private dining rooms fittingly named Bamboo, Orchid, Peony, Lotus and Azalea rooms, entertain the most distinguished guests, arousing one’s taste palette with pops of concentrated colours, such as green tale found in the dining chairs creating contrast with the pewter grey theme of the restaurant. Light coloured carpets harmonize the private rooms. Large pewter metallic wall tiles are found across the room’s columns blending with the overall design. Remnants of the master artist’s craft are prevalent, particularly on the window columns that are treated with a moulded flower effect commonly found on pewter decorations. Through The Lounge guests can encounter a secret door passageway that leads to Bar Trigona, creating a sense of exclusivity.

Bar Trigona The two-levelled seating bar is illuminated by 52 strings of light and 715 pendant lamps, bringing elements of the shining lights and stars outside. Whilst hidden away from plain sight, the discreet getaway celebrates the art of Malaysian weaving techniques, adding texture for depth via leather, glass and bronze materials to balance out the 220 degree views of Kuala Lumpur’s urban jungle outside. Over 15 types of imperial blue and teal fabrics adorn the walls and booths in Trigona Bar. The illuminated columns designed as shutters echo with colonial architecture, and serve as a display and storage for whiskey bottles. Eight Chinese yo-yo inspired lamps hang atop of the bartenders yoyoing back and forth mixing cocktails, and the 9,039 pieces of mirror on wall and ceiling provided a backdrop of twinkling stars.

Imperial blues and teals make up the hip and exclusive bar called Bar Trigona. Whilst hidden away from plain sight, the discreet getaway celebrates the art of Malaysian weaving techniques that is reflected throughout the teal coloured walls with golden weaves. Leather, glass and bronze materials reproduce the traditional craft, adding texture for depth that balances Kuala Lumpur’s urban jungle down below. Different facets of the bar are reflected off the ceiling’s kaleidoscope box, bringing in elements of the shining lights and stars outside. Dark teal and pale rose fabrics on sofas and chairs make up the lounging areas where guests can relax and enjoy the evening. Lighting fixtures hung from the antique mirror ceiling lined along the windows help illuminate Kuala Lumpur’s skyline.

ocated in the 1922 headquarters of the Port of London Authority at Ten Trinity Square, Mei Ume, which takes its name from the Chinese and Japanese words for ‘plum blossom,’ fuses Eastern and Western heritage. Originally a gateway for traders from the East to trade commodities such as tea, silks and ceramics, Ed and Terence, who work internationally within the luxury hospitality design sector, sought their inspiration for the design from the building’s history. “We have been honoured to be trusted with a project that is rich with history and heritage. As our first project in the UK, Mei Ume at Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square marks a very important milestone for us and we have thoroughly enjoyed working on keeping a legacy alive.” said Ed Ng of AB Concept. “As someone who grew up in Hong Kong, a melting pot of Eastern and Western cultures, I found this project particularly interesting as it presented us with the challenge of how to represent this delicately and sensitively.”

The main dining room is complete with bold red accents, a continuous theme throughout the restaurant that represents happiness and celebration in Chinese culture. The most notable feature of the restaurant and central focal point is a red lacquer frame holding an ornate three-layer gilded triptych. Each panel depicts a story and has been created through a multi-layer painting technique with glass overlays, allowing the viewer to see the work from a different perspective depending on the angle of viewing. On the opposite wall another piece of art that uses the same layer painting technique, is suspended and depicts a market scene from the Song Dynasty in China – an era of Chinese history dating back to AD 960.

As all of the original columns from the 1922 building remain intact, Ed and Terence faced the unique design challenge to preserve the original mouldings, yet reinvent them with a new spirit and purpose. Intricate metal motifs have been erected on top of each column suspending three halo structures and resulting in three cosy alcoves for diners seeking privacy. The English heritage of the Grade II listed property establishes itself in the form of custom table lamps lining the large bronze-framed windows, which face the hotel’s courtyard.

our Seasons Hong Kong at Noi, the new restaurant lounge led by Argentinian-born Michelin-starred chef, Paulo Airaudo. Following a design brief set by Airaudo himself, AB Concept has divided the new restaurant into two key zones: an Italian style dining room named Italian Silhouette with a capacity of 22 covers, and Doodle Garden which is a more casual breakout lounge featuring a wine bar kiosk and panoramic views over Hong Kong. The overall design concept is a representation of an Italian silhouette with Japanese infill – as a reference to the food served – and pays homage to Chef Airaudo’s Italian-Argentinian heritage by intertwining Italian architecture and contemporary furniture, as well as a statement wine cellar. Noi, which means “we” or “us” in Italian, offers guests a fun and authentic finedining experience and portrayal of Chef Airaudo’s life

– from the food he grew up eating, a curated playlist of his favourite 80s and 90s hits, to playful decor inspired by his travels, best-loved films and video games, as well as his many tattoos. Noi offers a bespoke experience in each area. It is a fusion of art and cuisine with pattern playing a key part throughout the restaurant as artistic elements adorn the carpets, walls and ceilings, and pop art motifs make their way into the two private dining rooms. Although inspired by pop art elements through the use of colour, the private dining areas are entwined with contemporary interpretation of Italian renaissance moulding and guests can find comfort in AB Concept’s Viola chairs, a collaboration with renowned Italian furniture maker Poltrona Frau. A VIP experience is also offered through concealed door access to the second private dining suite and both rooms have access to the curated wine cellar which separates the two.

Italian Silhouette is the main dining room inspired by traditional Italian motifs and boasting a rich materials and colour palette of deep blues, bronze, dark timbers, leather, rippled glass, and silver travertine. Guests can find comfort in the curved banquette seating which overlooks an open kitchen backed with Japanese tiles, and bamboo screens create layers of atmosphere, separating this space from the Doodle Garden beyond. The level of details throughout Noi shapes the overall experience with the intention of leaving guests feeling inspired. “Our vision for Noi was to create a fun fine-dining experience that suits the vibrant city scene and celebrates Chef Paulo Airaudo’s philosophy. ilan fans take note! Hong Kong’s leading designer duo Ed Ng and Terence Ngan of AB Concept have added a hot new destination to the city’s fantastic dining scene, Paper Moon Giardino. Paper Moon has always been a place of gathering and a central meeting point where guests, such as the late Gianni Versace, could sit and relax in the living room-like space amongst Milan’s busiest and most luxurious street, Via Monte Napoleone. For AB Concept’s Co-founder and Principal Ed Ng, the project has been close to his heart: “Since the beginning of my career Milan has been a regular stop, and I have been a loyal patron of Paper Moon for more than 20 years. It has been fantastic having the opportunity to recreate our vision of Paper Moon Giardino in this historical 200 year old building.” Each of the six main rooms in the restaurant is named after their original purpose in the heritage mansion: a grand salon, a parlour, a wine library, and a striking “giardino” or courtyard garden. The vaulted ceilings and view of the garden inspired Ed and Terence to turn each chamber into intimate dining spaces each with their own personality and design separated by sandstone arches.

The restaurant feels as comfortable as a home and suitable for any time of the day. In the morning, guests can enjoy a nice lunch or coffee in the parlour then move to the salon for afternoon tea in the garden before settling in the private dinner rooms. The flat top bar at the entrance with high back chairs and a wine fridge is created to provide a quick coffee in the day and a small sip in the evening. Heritage Considerations The beautiful chambers presented a key challenge for the designers to create a restaurant atmosphere: the main structures had to be preserved and the original layout of the rooms could not be altered. “The biggest impediment is to work under this constraint, to elaborate and gain inspiration from the givens and continue to develop a new design that works in harmony,” says Ed Ng.

The geometric shapes and murals on the antique vaulted ceiling, windows, and even the terrazzo flooring are unmistakably Italian. Ed and Terence complemented the existing architecture with multiple mirrors, elegant floral arrangements, lounge chairs and sofas in earthy and cream nature-inspired tones with a more casual feel to contrast the glitzy boutiques down the road. The decorative light installations throughout were carefully designed for each space. This includes a hexagon floor lamp inspired from the ceiling mural, and a series of wall sconces created for the FLUX collaboration with Lasvit, which coincidentally first debuted in the Salone del Mobile 2017. The Paper Moon Giardino flagship on 12 Via Bagutta introduces a different palette and ambience than the other seven locations in order to pay homage to the heritage mansion. The softer colours and art complement the garden and the intimate dining areas of the former mansion. However, the iconic portraits of Paper Moon are still featured, but on a smaller scale and specially curated to tell the story of a home. “Having known Paper Moon’s owners for a long time, it has been a very exciting journey working with them to create this upscale design.” says Ed Ng.

ocated in the heart of Taipei, this residence illustrates a balance between traditional aesthetics and refreshing atmosphere characterized by the concept of artfully humble luxury to reflect on the experience of living. The west’s heritage architecture is mainly made of stone. After being colonized by Japan in the early 20 th century, Taiwan was influenced by the western culture. However, the island lacked of quarries while stones were expensive to excavate, therefore terrazzo offered a cost-effective flooring that is refreshing and cool to the touch, easy to clean, and perfect for tropical humid climate in the island. As a result, terrazzo became a Taiwanese favourite material as flooring of choice in homes, stores, and public buildings because of its beauty and durability. Due to its dense population Taipei is known for being compact city where buildings tend to be closer together, however one of the main features of the Taipei Residence is its unobstructed views of the city while enjoying the outdoor greenery and abundant natural lighting. Bringing outdoor energy into the home, airy space extends throughout the flat complemented with living plants by CN Flower, which are an extension of the greenery of the outdoor foundation. The living room features floor-to-ceiling windows benefiting from the soothing pleasures of indoor living with outdoor elements. Neutral tones are uplifted with sculptural and vivid furniture to enhance fluidity of the space. Screen panels are placed strategically by the window to create a sense of privacy while still being able to get a peak of the city skyline. On the other side of the living room seats the kitchen and a hidden bright private dining area to enjoy a meal or an afternoon tea with expansive views. The Taipei Residence’s sculptural fluidity extends through layering adding depth to the overall space. The private quarters feature three semi enclosed areas welcomed by a refreshing and airy lounge room to unwind followed by a warm study room, and secluded from the rest of the home is the bedroom that resembles a hidden cosy alcove.

ocated on the sun-drenched shores of the Algarve, where jagged cliffs merge with crystal clear waters and all-year sunny climes, the 134-guestroom hotel and 83 residences, brings W Hotels’ distinctive energy to Portugal for the first time. It is also AB Concept’s first full hotel and residences project in Europe, where they have designed every element of the resort. AB Concept’s intriguing design entwines the Algarve’s striking natural scenery and rich Portuguese history with the W brand’s signature style. The new W Algarve represents a new generation of hotels within the W portfolio, conceived and designed to be fully integrated in local life, not just a luxury destination but a landmark on the Portuguese coast, contributing to the area’s development. This new location marks a shift in the area’s hospitality landscape as it remains open through winter, promoting year-round tourism. The destination’s mesmerising curved Benagil caves inspired the flowing design of the hotel’s interior spaces, while the colour palette of blues, aquamarines and turquoise nods to the azure sky and surrounding Atlantic Ocean. From fabrics and surfaces to tempting textures, each detail of the hotel is intentional. Guests will discover expertly curated art and spectacular lighting all telling the story of local traditions and heritage – from ceramics, mosaic and crochet to Moorish costume, fishing livelihoods and the destination’s surf culture.

Guests arrive through an entryway inspired by an old local folklore tale featuring a fluid, curved feature wall adorned with infinity mirrors and Portuguese handmade ceramic plates – made by Vista Alegre, a Portuguese porcelain craft company that has been in existence for almost 200 years - in ethereal greens and blues arranged in an abstract form, creating a mystical underwater feel the moment guests step through the doors. The energetic W Lounge features a mesmerising ‘wave’ centrepiece installation made from glass panels, taking inspiration from Moorish jewellery and oceanic bubbles. With one side of the W Lounge opening out onto the terrace, the space is flooded with bright, natural light, creating an indoor-outdoor feel. The glamorous bar, decorated with custom-made Moorish-inspired tiles, features dramatic handblown glass lighting pendants and a 20-metre-long onyx counter that extends from the interior bar to the exterior terrace. Outside, guests can admire stylish water features and the expansive hotel grounds surrounded by lush forest – all referenced in the bar’s natural colour palette.

The 134 chic guest rooms embrace clean maximalism. Opposites attract as natural hues and materials marry colour. Custom-made furnishings and intricate local touches are peppered throughout including filigree bedside lanterns, dramatic backlit headboards designed in a nod to nearby churches, mosaics made from authentic Algarve ceramic tiles, and a crochet pattern that adorns the glass panel separating the bathroom from the bedroom, reflecting onto the bedroom floor as the light shines through. All guestrooms offer balconies with stunning views across the escape gardens and the Atlantic coast. The ten WOW suites feature rooftop terraces with endless coastal views.

WET Deck, the W brand’s signature take on the poolside scene, offers guests a stylish space to soak up the sun. Laid back cabanas surround the curved edges of the cascading pools that mimic the coastline. The Market Kitchen restaurant has been created with a neighbourhood ambience, taking inspiration from local markets using traditional Calçada Portuguesa patterned pavements, Azulejos tiles and typical style windows. It will offer a relaxed, rustic feel through the timber flooring, floor-to-ceiling tiling detail and louvred, window doors which open out onto the bright fountain garden, flooding the space with light. A tiled communal table in the centre of the restaurant and counter seating will complete the convivial atmosphere created by this space. Sitting atop the hotel with panoramic views as far as the eye can see, Paper Moon, sister to the renowned Milanese restaurant, showcases a chic white interior and exterior, created with white timber and monochrome floors. Stylish and energetic, this is another seamless indoor-outdoor space; interiors are airy and light with windowed doors that open out onto an expansive terrace where guests can enjoy the peninsula’s breath-taking sights.

nternational interior design and architecture studio, AB Concept has been appointed by Hilton to design the interiors of several key spaces within the new Waldorf Astoria in Xiamen, China. Set to become a new city landmark and social meeting spot in Autumn 2020, Waldorf Astoria Xiamen is located at the heart of the island within the Siming District within a multi-purpose complex which combines the luxury hotel, office space, and high-end leisure and boutique businesses. As with every AB Concept project, the studio’s starting point is to focus on the property’s local surroundings. A coastal city in East China’s Fujian Province, Xiamen is known for its treaty ports and has a distinct history and culture infused with outside influences. Today it is a growing contemporary cultural hub which fuses literature, art, fashion and architecture to embrace a new generation. AB Concept took inspiration from the rich Nanyang culture and influential consular period heritage and has landed on a narrativedriven concept which tells the story of an elegant manor house with a modern edge.

AB Concept have drawn on this and through a palette of blue and green hues, have opened the hotel up to the outdoors for guests to make the most of the natural surroundings and views of neighbouring Gulangyu Island. midst the vibrant and bustling capital of Indonesia, a sense of harmony and calm reverberates from the upscale St. Regis Jakarta hotel. This serene oasis was brought to life by LASVIT, a premier spatial concept company based in the Czech Republic, which was approached by the Rajawali Property Group to infuse a breathtaking ambience within the luxurious five-star hotel. The collaboration resulted in a mesmerising installation aptly called Sound of Light, where a dazzling interplay of glass and light harmonises with live piano music in the hotel lobby. With a composition of 1,192 Bohemian crystal glass pieces and dynamic lighting effects, Sound of Light is an incredible showcase of music in artistic motion. Petra Junová, the mastermind behind this installation, describes it as an ambitious blend of music and art to enliven Jakarta’s cityscape. “Sound of Light is an art piece that responds to music and creates a cosy and peaceful atmosphere in the lobby. At the same time, it is a very complex contemporary glass installation,” Junová shares. Complex yet ethereal, Sound of Light is concealed ingeniously within a subtle gold-coloured metallic framework with an extensive electrical system

requiring 10 km of cabling. From the manufacturing of the glass to the programming and wiring of the dynamic lighting, each component was executed with precision and skill by LASVIT’s in-house specialists. As guests make their way further into the hotel, two other bespoke installations by LASVIT present yet another pleasant surprise. The first installation, a stunning tribute to the volcanic relief of Indonesia, graces the ballroom with its radiant glow, while the second installation, inspired by the melodious shape of a saxophone, lends its charm to the jazz bar. Designed by Martin Gallo, the ballroom installation, which spans forty metres across, is inspired by the awe-inspiring landscape of Indonesia and the exquisite Czech crystal glass. Beyond crafting a beautiful piece, Gallo also creatively incorporated the ballroom’s columns into his artwork. The textured glass, featuring patterns reminiscent of flowing lava, not only enhances the space aesthetically but also serves a practical purpose in supporting the ceiling. At the jazz bar, LASVIT’s glass installation adorning the central area evokes an elegant yet inviting atmosphere where guests can sit back to enjoy the music. A true marvel of artistry, the installation resembles saxophone flaps and imbues the surroundings with a cosy glow, setting the tone for a truly unforgettable musical experience.

ature is the muse behind the dreamy Les Forêts wallcovering collection. Crafted using natural materials like wood, raffia, and bark and adorned with forest patterns, the collection conjures the enigmatic ambience of dense woodlands, taking you on a journey through a woodfilled wonderland. For instance, Dioré, inspired by the protected Forêt de Dioré on Réunion Island, is a modern, abstract interpretation of classic tapestries with a nuanced colour palette that resembles a hand-tufted carpet. Natural fibres play a vital role in this collection. Éclat, meaning shine in French, features a large block pattern and a thin layer of real cork, offset by the subtle sheen. To generate a cosy appeal, Ajoura, crafted from high-quality wood veneer, offers a sense of warmth and joy. The fibres also give way to a lighter touch, like Tresse, which features casual braids made of natural materials accentuated by a soft velour finish. In contrast, Ruban incorporates narrow raffia strips woven together with an ultra-fine thread to create a successful interplay of narrow and wide. For a tropical touch, Infini and Tinto take cue from the exotic beauty of the banana tree. Infini features a unique combination of paper thread and handwoven banana leaf, while Tinto is made from dyed banana tree bark, which adds an organic touch to any wall with its natural colour variations and checkerboard pattern.
