OPULENCE IN MOTION

PLEASURE SEEKER

STRANDS OF STYLE

Giorgetti’s modular outdoor seating system, the Aldia sofa, brings the elegance of indoor luxury to the outdoors. Designed by Carlo Colombo, this sofa merges precious materials with a contemporary appearance to evoke a sense of immersive comfort amid natural surroundings. Featuring stratified wood, which is pantographed and made by hand, the frame appears to have been crafted by the wind. Textile fabrics in warm shades of Caribbean sunsets further give this sofa a distinctively inviting outlook.

From late-night conversations, a nine-course meal to chillax sessions with your loved ones, the Rolf Benz NOA chair is the perfect companion for all your relaxing moments. Wonderfully soft, comfortable, and light, the delicate form of the chair depicts authentic craftsmanship with its high-quality top-stitching with pleats on the back and a plush upholstery designed for total seating pleasure. Available with or without armrests, a combination of different (internal and external) cover materials is possible.

Inspired by the classic Orkney Chair, which was made from real ropes, the Giro chair reinterprets Orkney’s unique design approach using recycled polypropylene rope to take advantage of the materials’ flexible and sustainable characteristics. The chair, which Vincent Van Duysen designed for Kettal, is warm and weather-friendly, making it an ideal furniture choice for contemporary outdoor spaces. The combination with teak gives the chair a very natural aesthetic to create a pleasant and tactile atmosphere.

HAUTE APPEAL

SLENDER ENDEAVOUR

LINES OF SIGHT

A monolithic masterpiece, the Tie chair is enigmatic and seductive. Tie’s full volume captures attention instantly before drawing you towards its unique silhouette that unveils an alluring slit at the back, reminiscence of haute couture creations. According to Tie’s designers, the chair takes inspiration from a carefree and fashionable personality. While Tie seamlessly blends with other furnishing elements, this impressive chair is also perfect as a standalone piece.

Perfect proportions and streamlined design are the hallmarks of the San Siro chair designed by Jasper Morrison for Cappellini. Created in accordance with the designer’s pure and minimalist design language, this chair features slim edges and an exceptionally soft and plush form, providing a supremely comfortable seat that adapts effortlessly to any interior environment. Available with feet or casters, San Siro comes with fixed upholstery in a selection of fabrics and leathers from the collection.

The Nuvola Rossa, designed by Vico Magistretti in 1977, was intended as a functional bookshelf; but ever since its inception, it has become an icon of design renowned for its timeless aesthetic featuring diagonal bracing struts supporting six shelves, eliminating the need for side support. There’s more to the Nuvola Rossa than meets the eye – the bookshelf can be folded away and also serves as a room divider, thanks to hinges strategically placed within its structure.

PLUSH BEGINNINGS

A GENTLE REMINDER

CIRCLE OF LIFE

The new B&B Atoll small armchair is extremely versatile and stylish with its signature profile comprising soft, luxurious cushions that rest on a slightly inclined and slender frame. Supported by thin metal legs, the armchair conjures a sense of lightness, which provides a beautiful balance between form and function as well as comfort and style. The armchair can be upholstered in leather or fabric in a range of colours to suit different spatial requirements.

The Remind chair reimagines the design of wooden chairs from the late 19 th century, bringing forth their charming qualities using sustainable materials and innovative details. With soft, sinuous curves, Remind is every bit as sensual and romantic as its predecessor, but it is also airy and lightweight to evoke comfort and a contemporary appearance. Made from a monoblock of injection-moulded polypropylene, Remind’s perforated backrest can be accentuated with tiny colourful pixels to create infinite patterns.

The Enso table, which derived its name from the Japanese word “circle”, is created as a poetic expression of the shape’s symbolic meaning rooted in Zen Buddhism. Enso’s designers from M2Atelier explain: “We have interpreted this concept of everything, meaning the universe, and nothing, meaning emptiness, with a sculptural and graceful object that seems to arise from a void to open up like a calla lily.” The table is available with an elliptical or round top.

uxurious with a touch of whimsical elegance, the five-star Mondrian Hotel in Doha designed by Marcel Wanders presents a dazzling showcase of dramatic tones, expressive patterns, and mesmerizing details. Artistic and bold, the design evokes a uniquely complex atmosphere, which echoes Wander’s sense of irony. Nevertheless, the hotel’s prime spaces - from the indoor pool and gym to the restaurant and wine bar, hotel rooms and common lounges, were all ingeniously tempered with a sensible combination of traditional Arab elements and Western beauty. “Many themes are layered in the hotel. With each individual space telling its own tale, guests have many different experiences, and therefore, weave for themselves a volume of stories to share,” Wanders explains. The right furniture pieces were essential to bring out Wander’s vision for the hotel. In the lounge area next to the indoor pool, Dalia armchairs designed by Wanders for Cappellini beautifully complement the thematic space. With its sensual curves that bloom into a floral embrace, this iconic chair adds a contemporary appeal to the pool area. At the hall and lounge, Tulip armchairs, also designed by Wanders himself for Cappellini, seamlessly blend with the architectural concept to generate a robust aesthetic appeal with its elongated, upbeat form. In fact, these beautiful seating pieces are such a perfect match that they nearly become elements of structural support in that space, thanks to their strong sculptural presence.

A

t Preciosa Lighting, lights do more than just brighten a room; lighting is also a powerful element to create memorable experiences within a beautiful space. The Conrad Hotel in Washington, DC evocatively exemplifies this point of view, offering meaningful moments created from surprising details and discovered in unexpected places. Designed by renowned Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, Conrad Washington, DC features an impressive all-glass facade and a breathtaking interior concept. The heart of this elegant hotel is an atrium, which is shaped like Switzerland to pay tribute to the Swiss architects. The hotel also houses a permanent contemporary art collection. The Conrad brought in Preciosa Lighting to bring the hotel’s luxurious spaces to life with original lighting designed to spark imagination and infuse a memorable experience. Starting at the meeting spaces and restaurant, Preciosa Lighting’s Falling Flowers installation is a brilliant addition to the pre-function hall. The lighting piece comprises hand-blown glass plates in different sizes, carefully hung to resemble a soft downward flow of petals. At the Conrad, 160 floral pieces ranging in size from two to six metres “fall away” from a circular mirrored ceiling, creating a magnificent centrepiece for the room.

TOP: Designed by renowned Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, Conrad Washington, DC features a breathtaking all-glass façade.

BOTTOM: A technologically challenging endeavour, the creation of the glass flower-like plates is a speciality of Preciosa Lighting’s glassworks.

“What we love about this installation of lighting art is the feeling it brings to the entire space,” says Jan Volsik, Vice-chairman of the Board for Preciosa Lighting. “There’s a lot of natural light in the long room, which creates gorgeous reflections from the hand-blown glass.” For the grand and junior ballrooms, eight crystal “icicles” dangling from the ceiling evoke a magical ambience. This effect is created using optical glass tubes in differing lengths and colours, including clear, light smoky, light brown and iridescent. The lighting magic continues in the hotel’s signature restaurant, The Estuary, which showcases an approximately four-metre-long lighting feature. Forty rhombus-shaped glass plates of hand-blown frosted glass complement the space’s bright and minimal design. “The Conrad is a dynamic, memorable hotel,” said Mr Volsik. “Projects that allow us to create original lighting for unique spaces like this one are what we thrive on.”

Illuminate Lighting Design - HBA Singapore

A

Light Directions - HBA Hong Kong

fter many years of collaboration on a series of projects, a deal was signed between Light Directions and HBA (Hirsch Bedner Associates) on the 1st of January 2021. HBA’s homegrown lighting design company, Illuminate, has officially joined forces with Light Directions. The merger will be known as Light Directions. Michael Huggins, founder of Light Directions, and his team will be bringing to the table over 30 years of experience and expertise in the field across a wide variety of portfolios. And while tapping into Illuminate’s strong sense of light design for hospitality projects, Light Directions aims to be the leading lighting studio. Back in the days when most lighting designers came from a background of either the theatre or architecture, Mike pursued Ergonomics. His final thesis at Loughborough University explored the relationship between light and performance. It was evident where his interest lies. After graduation, he worked at an innovative Lighting Workshop in London for several years before going on tour with Holiday on Ice, the largest touring ice show in the world, as a lighting “techie”. During the tour, Mike and his wife, Linda passed through Hong Kong and they both fell in love with the city. The charm of Hong Kong had such a pull on the couple, they decided to move there the moment the tour ended.

Lighting is an integral component in interior design and architectural projects, and the 1980s saw a surge in demand for designers specialized in that area. Michael Huggins along with Solon Cheng Wai Chung founded Light Directions back in 1989 in response to the market need. The goal then, as it is now, is to intelligently enhance, layer, shape and accentuate with light. Light Directions welcomed its third member, Gerard Lee, in early year 1990. Gerard’s background in lighting is far humbler; his expertise lies in electrical engineering. Before arriving in Hong Kong, he served an apprenticeship with Matthew Hall Mechanical & Electrical Engineers Ltd in London. Gerard met Michael when they collaborated on the ambitious Park View project in Hong Kong. It was Light Directions’ first project and Gerard was assisting the control system manufacturer. Gerard joined Michael’s team after, and they have been in the business of lighting together ever since. Providing attentive local expertise to global clients remains Light Directions’ vision. By becoming part of HBA and having access to a pool of lighting professionals based in Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, L.A. and Dubai, Light Directions is looking forward to an accelerated growth in its international presence.

T

he feeling of flow was something that stood out to Illuminate Lighting Design while working on the Opus, an instantly recognizable Zaha Hadid project. Rikus De Kock, Lighting Project Director at Illuminate, explained: “It was refreshing to work to a design that is not typical. I come from the theatrical side of lighting, and back then we deliberately strived to make everything unusual. A typical ZHA design is always ‘flowing’, and the form of the design is a driving factor.” Spanning 84,300sqm, the Opus was designed as two separated towers that “coalesce into a single whole” taking the form of a cube. The cube has been “eroded” in its centre, creating a typically Zaha Hadid free-form void, and illuminated by a dynamic light installation developed by dpa lighting consultants. The interior of Opus is full of typical Zaha Hadid flourishes such as undulating curves and unusual shapes feature. The brief for the interior lighting design, De Kock explained, came more in a “language of renders and visuals”, rather than a specific narrative. Through the visuals, it was clear that the lighting design was extremely clean, with typical ZHA curved lines. The same language flowed from the rooms throughout the public areas. The overall intent of clean ceilings

TOP: The 6,000sqm void on the façade was designed to reflect the sky, the sun and the surrounding city by day, while at night it is illuminated by the dynamic light installation.

and curved lines was evident with the use of hidden linear fixtures creating flowing lines of light that seamlessly blend into the fabric of the building. The main challenge was to match the technical specifications of the lighting to match the design intent and still achieve the correct lux levels where needed but it was swiftly resolved due to the technology available this day and age. Fixture that ran throughout the building, a combination of spotlights and downlights, was selected for its design and technical performance. Areas where lighting concepts had to be developed by Illuminate Lighting Design, De Kock would look for inspirations from the wider work of Zaha Hadid to create a lighting scheme that would live up to the striking architecture. A project such as the Opus that is so driven by the remarkable architecture and interior design, it is important that the lighting design does not draw focus but serves as an accompaniment.

“IT WAS REFRESHING TO WORK TO A DESIGN THAT IS NOT TYPICAL. I COME FROM THE THEATRICAL SIDE OF LIGHTING, AND BACK THEN WE DELIBERATELY STRIVED TO MAKE EVERYTHING UNUSUAL. A TYPICAL ZHA DESIGN IS ALWAYS ‘FLOWING’, AND THE FORM OF THE DESIGN IS A DRIVING FACTOR.” Rikus De Kock - Lighting Project Director, Illuminate Lighting Design

from the ceiling cove lighting, with suspended spotlights delivering light down the double height space to the reception desks and lounge seats. As night falls the skylight dims and transforms into a light well, courtesy of the signature aperture feature in the façade lighting above it. The space is transformative throughout different times of the day or season as sunlight moves along the walls through the large windows, the complementary lighting scheme makes it an alluring location for watching the time pass. On the right wing of the lobby, the All-Day Dining restaurant Sunrise kicks the play on fishnets up a notch. Huge backlit columns became opportunities to introduce coloured ambience and softness into the large space. Associate YanChoo explains ‘With themes like sunrise and sunset, the colour tones were programmed and automated by time. The experience is for guests to continue the gastronomical experience with a connection to changing light quality on the outside.’ The left wing, presents itself with a more relaxed

lounge space, containing a lobby lounge and Cheers bar. The bar teems with colours on the graffiti walls with ombres of paint work mixed with driftwood touches. Swing chairs further enhance the experience of kick back and relax, while looking out to the views. Lighting enhances this atmosphere with tracklights focused on tables and accent pieces, creating a dramatic contrast that plays up the pops of colours. The Grand ballroom and upstairs meeting rooms provided guests with event space options and the flexibility of lighting to expand into bigger rooms. Specifically in the ballroom, spotlights are tucked within the slots of the bamboo ceiling to minimise ceiling clutter, with some focused on the chandelier for sparkle, others with narrow beam to spotlight tables. Various control groups were allocated to allow some of these lights to dim independent of other lights to create a range of light scenes, together with colour changing cove lights at the perimeter walls, maximising the possibility of accommodating different functions.

In the guestrooms, the recurring theme of fishing is exemplified through the choice of turquoise hues against the dark hardwood reminisce of traditional fishing boats. Lighting plays a role in accenting the verticals of the hardwood while injecting soft glow into the space. The challenge was to ensure the functionality of shielded, minimal lighting to encourage views towards the ocean. Connecting the guests with the stunning environment, through the labyrinth of lush landscape and reflective pools, the landscape lighting was crafted in collaboration with landscape consultant Element Studio. Low level bollards formed tiny beacons of light guiding guests to their point of destination as up lit tropical palm trees frame the long views down to the beach at every turn. Pools were lit at the edge for the illusion of infinite cascade while the flanking rows of cabanas held wall sconces that provide a calming glow. Guests would walk along a curious path towards the spa enclave at the far end, where light transits into a burst of shadow play on plumerias and shrubs lining the curved walls, allowing guests to discover the dome shaped piece of heaven.

At the spa reception, lighting attempts to slow down the minds with a focus on uplights gently washing the boundary walls, together with customised artificial candle lights flickering on the flanking wood screens. With the aid of uplights through the center fountain, the reflectivity of water ripples washes the ceiling evokes a sense of serenity for arriving guests. As YanChoo describes, ‘As guests are led into their dedicated treatment pods by light that is subdued from the eye, occasionally revealing only the curves of the entrances and dome ceiling. The subtlety of light and calmness of the scenery allow guests to pause and reflect.’ Fronting the beach is the specialty Vietnamese restaurant Blu Lobster. Donning a traditional Vietnamese architecture, a quiet lotus pond with soft light washes to the decorative vessels gently ushers in the entry to the restaurant. Greeting the guests is a double storey cascade of paper lanterns surrounded by a towering feature wall of planters. The wall sconces helped accentuate the traditional

architectural columns whilst the soft coves deliver glow to pitched rattan ceilings. The overall scheme is a rich celebration of lit textures and form, very much a reflection of the cuisine offered in the restaurant. Façade lighting to the hotel tower focused on accentuating the curved profile of the building block and signature aperture in the middle of the block. Soft linear graze light was applied to each floor wrapping around the building, with multi-angled wash lights accenting the aperture walls, pulling views through the building towards the sea. At the top floor, cove details were added to the balcony outside the club lounge, to create an uplifting float effect to the cap of the building. The overall façade lighting effect is a glorious draw as guests travel down the main road from the local airport and an absolute standout project in the area.

ocated in the CBD area of Haicang District, along the picturesque promenade of Haicang Avenue, Marriott Xiamen offers spectacular views of Haicang Bay and Gulangyu. Designed by HBA Singapore in collaboration with Illuminate Lighting Design and completed in 2018, the property presents 304 guestrooms and suites, three F&B outlets, a ballroom and a health club & spa. Responding to Xiamen’s location at the mouth of the Nine Dragons River, where legend has it that nine dragons would frolic in its glistening waters, the contemporary design is inspired by different properties of water such as wave, drizzle, spray and crystallised. With the strong design narrative, Illuminate Lighting Design conceptualised how lighting could enhance the story thread. Flanking the space are linear screens that convey the sense of cascading water, which is enhanced by intricate light profiles integrated within various slats of the screen. he former headquarters of Britain’s Metropolitan Police has been converted into a 153-room hotel and while it caters to meet the needs of a luxury hotel, it is a destination that invites guests to journey through various experiences, as opposed to a collection of spaces. The property is designed as a collection of food and beverage outlets orchestrated by celebrity chef Robin Gill and it has co-working areas downstairs. The atmosphere of each outlet is unique, however each one has to connect to the others and this is where lighting comes into play. Good lighting design helps to narrate the story of the place. “The decorative lighting forms part of the overall interior design as it is in such close proximity, so it all had to flow together. With this in mind, the same inspiration for the interior design flowed through to the decorative lighting selections as well.” said Riku DeKock of Illuminate Lighting Design. At the entrance, a decorative Preciosa Lighting piece titled ‘Exploding Clock’ signifies that the guest is entering a place full of history. As one journeys down to the lounge that leads to various social venues, a good balance of accent and ambient lighting give prominence to the sculpted interiors and eclectic decorative elements.

ntrusted with the design of the Royal Penthouse Suite for the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Geneva, world-renowned interior designer J Lee Rofkind turned to Light Directions to help bring to life her vision of “Luxurious Modern European Living.” Located on the 7th floor and accessible by a private lift, the Royal Penthouse accommodates up to six guests and features three elegant bedrooms, modern bathrooms, a large entertainment area and a kitchen. It also boasts a generous roof terrace overlooking the scenic snow-capped mountains, Rhône River, and the charming Old Town. J Lee’s brief to Light Directions was straightforward says Gerard, Principal Designer and Partner. “Keep it fresh, keep it simple and make it timeless.” With this in mind, Light Directions set about their task. Light Directions first had to establish the standards and guidelines to follow. After a few discussions with J Lee and Jean-Pierre Gameiro (Project Leader for the Mandarin Oriental, Geneva), it was decided that the team would follow Mandarin Oriental’s guidelines on light levels and adopt Swiss Minergie’s standard of energy requirements.

TOP: The entertainment area has a unique semi-circular vista that faces out to the terrace and its grandeur can be witnessed at night when the curtain pelmet lighting dims to low-romantic level akin to candlelight.

There were several focal points to consider in the living area from a lighting perspective. The dining table was adorned with a contemporary chandelier, while the living area and fireplace were strategically lit with table lamps and free-standing lamps to create a cozy ambience. In addition to the decorative elements, architectural lighting was thoughtfully executed with low-glare down-lights from the iGuzzini Laser range, and linear lighting by LED Linear for the coves and curtain pelmets. The use of delineation and highlight in the lighting design was distinct. Adjustable recessed down-lights with Swiss-produced Zanetti control system were used to draw attention to the decorative artwork, screens, and horizontal surfaces. The control system features six different lighting modes which include “hero scenes” that comprise features that can be set in relative to the time of day and/or function.

The entertainment area has a unique semi-circular vista that faces out to the terrace and its grandeur can be witnessed at night when the curtain pelmet lighting dims to low-romantic level akin to candlelight. Low-glare down-lights reduce visible reflection in the windows, thus, allowing guests to have clear unrestricted views when looking out. Guests may enjoy a scrumptious meal with an awe-inspiring view at the rooftop terrace where LED decorative lanterns and genuine tea-lights on the tables help enhance the atmosphere. Exterior power sockets are strategically placed around the terrace perimeter to facilitate additional lighting for large outdoor functions. Each bedroom comes with a private balcony for guests to indulge in the morning sunlight. The glass doors let in an abundance of light thus, it was best to keep the lighting simple and clean using only cove lighting and down-lighting to craft the ambience. The bathroom lighting follows the same principles of delineation and highlight but with an additional integrated mirror vanity lighting. This method of integration was chosen over having a separate wall sconce to maintain the architectural purity of the mirror panel. The master bathroom is further embellished with a contemporary chandelier and decorative wall sconces to provide additional vertical illumination.

ollaborating with an international group of designers from the extensive HBA Global family, which included teams from Hong Kong, Tokyo, London and Seoul, Light Directions was tasked with lighting the full range of interiors for this prestigious project. The Dream Tower is an Integrated Resort comprising of a Grand Hyatt Hotel, Serviced Apartments, and 14 restaurants and bars plus a casino. The Rosebay Spa was designed with HBA London, liaising closely with the team there, it was established early on that the central spa corridor would have large sections of mirror wall. It was decided to exploit this design feature in order to reduce the number of down-lights that would usually be required to illuminate the corridor space. The simple technique of outlining with an LED strip-light to break up the central core wall and then having this reflected in the mirror panels worked to great effect, making the corridor to the treatment rooms light, interesting and exciting.

The Jeju Hotpot restaurant was designed by HBA Hong Kong, who used classical East Asian influences and finishes in very contemporary and ambitious ways to create a modern restaurant that is both vibrant and traditional. On arrival to the main entrance, you are greeted by a magnificent food display and a stunning red ceiling, augmented with hanging print panels and red lanterns. Our role here was to ensure the food display is well lit, whilst lighting the screens giving a subtle veneer of shimmer, a single recessed LED light-bar was employed to do both these jobs simultaneously, while cove lighting accents the differing ceiling levels above. A simple LED strip-light was added to the shelf displays introducing another layer of interest to the space. The main dining area’s predominant feature are the ceiling exhaust vents. We attempted to turn these “chimneys in reverse” into lanterns by graze lighting both the inner exhaust vent and the outer suspended metal panels that masked the vents’ appearance, and indeed a lantern effect was created. The China House is a combination of rustic and quirky interior design. With rough open brick walls, uniquely styled pendant lamps hung by marine grade rope, blue and white suspended Chinese vases, and a coffered ceiling. The architectural lighting is multilayered and sympathetic to the interior in order to graze walls, and light tables. The Yumeyama Japanese Restaurant combines the traditional with the modern. Lighting is concentrated onto the bar top and workstations, ensuring the “working plane” is well illuminated. Pendant lights over the bar add a cozy warmth, while small niche mounted LED strip-lights uplight the traditional Japanese menus. Cove lighting demarcates where the the ceiling heights and materials change. Finally there is floor mounted light trough which gives a diffuse uplight to the rough slate bar front. The Gallery Lounge boasts a six metre high ceiling, and grand volumes throughout. Full height window screens break up the view to outside obscuring traffic and giving a sense of privacy, while still allowing daylight in. As impressive as all the heights and details are within this space, the hero finish for us as lighting designers is the uniquely patterned lacquer ceiling. An ivory white lacquer with gold square

inserts is not the most conducive ceiling finish and pattern in which to install down-lights. The down-lights had to be square, they had to be exactly the same size as the gold square inserts, thirdly they had to be able to provide the right illuminance levels to tables and finished floor. These down-lights in defined groups of nine are the workhorse luminaire for the space and provide the ambient illumination. This lighting element is supplemented by spotlights on stalks that peer through louvered ceilings where the full height glazing is between columns and meets the lacquered ceiling. Finally oversized decorative pendants and floor lamps round out the lighting design. Cafe 8 serves dynamic Italian cuisine, and hand crafted drinks. This young and sophisticated interior, with its playful pendant light, governed our simple selection of twin headed light fixtures to provide the main illumination source. The change in ceiling levels again required a linear accent done with an LED strip-light. Lastly the bar has its own dedicated row of down-lights installed at the bar canopy, to boost light levels.

TOP: Pocha, a 21st Century Korean Street Dining experience. Lighting looks retro but all are LEDs technology.

BOTTOM: The Deli, like the opening of a jewellery box where treasures are found.

The Pre-Function area is dominated by the geometric, yet quirky squared circle pendant. However this is purely a decorative lighting element. The workhorse light fixture providing general illumination for this area are the ceiling mounted down-lights. Under-shelf strip-lighting plus concealed graze lighting provide additional layers of accent. Level 38’s Pocha which is a modern Korean Street Dining experience is simply lit by LED sourced lanterns giving a retro street feel, whilst spotlights actually illuminate the space concealed in-between the louvered ceiling panels. The Deli is simply a jewellery box for cakes, chocolates and other desserts. Lit in a rather rectilinear fashion, the ceiling coves, vertically backlit panels and linear shelf lighting reinforce this geometry. Ceiling down-lights provide the display illumination while crystal pendants provide the lit decorative glass element above. The Jimjilbang Spa, Reception and Retail area were a fairly straight forward exercise in lighting design incorporating recessed adjustable down-lights and LED strip-lights concealed within ceiling coves. Finally for this installment on Dream Tower Jeju we have the indoor pool deck. Where lighting elements include underwater pool illumination, feature entrance uplights, column accent, cove and finally ceiling down-lights.

magine drawing with light and letting illuminated lines swirl across the room. Although it is momentary, it is a moment of beauty. Inspiral turns this ephemeral experience into an incredible lighting masterpiece. Inspired by calligraphy, the Inspiral crystal lighting installation, part of the Preciosa Signature Design portfolio, conveys the idea of writing with light. When switched on, Inspiral turns into a luminous ribbon that moves dynamically in space, sweeping through a room to create a shimmering effect. According to Preciosa, Inspiral’s curves portray different orientations and depths, creating optically stronger and weaker lines, giving the installation a sense of three-dimensional dynamics. “The beauty of calligraphy is really what inspired me to design this light,” explains Alena Hlavatá Nemcová, Preciosa Lighting Senior Designer. “The curves and swirls of the script are so compelling that I felt it could become an elegant lighting design.” Inspiral’s signature shimmer is meticulously created using a unique stainless-steel ribbon that can be bent and shaped at will. The ribbon’s edges are lined with crystal cut prisms that capture light and reflect it in the colours of the rainbow, creating a luxurious and sparkling effect.

BOTTOM: Inspiral is composed of crystal cut prisms that capture light and reflect it in a variety of colours.

Contemporary in its appearance, Inspiral presents a beautiful palette of crystal and metal colour combinations. Elegant crystal, crystal frosted, or smoky crystal prisms pair impeccably with stainless steel, copper, gold, or black matte finish to produce a mesmerising lighting piece that blends effortlessly with modern interior themes. A versatile lighting feature, Inspiral fits into a wide range of spaces. For large and public spaces, it is a visually stunning centrepiece. For smaller rooms, there is an option to create customised light. Due to its customisable feature, private residences along with hospitality spaces like lounges, waiting areas, hallways, and even guestrooms would benefit aesthetically from an Inspiral lighting feature. Installation is easy as it only requires setting it up using a few points and support cables. This means Inspiral can

be hung freely so that it is visible from every angle, including the top. “The flexibility of this fixture is really its most important element,” Nemcová adds. “The technology we created around the flexible steel ribbon puts creative control into the designer’s hands.” Different typologies of Inspiral are possible as Preciosa offers a selection of pre-designed Inspiral models, which can be modified further to suit different specifications. Designers can also create their own composition or work with the Preciosa Design Team to produce a suitable typology for their projects. “Because of the numerous customisation options available, Inspiral is always personalised for you,” says Preciosa Lighting.

eaturing beautiful curves and plush upholstery, the Litos sofa gracefully brings a touch of nature into interior spaces. This immensely comfortable seating piece by German designer Sebastian Herkner is inspired by the rocky coastline of Salento in Southern Italy, known to be a haven for sea lovers. “I was travelling two years ago (when it was possible to travel) to the South of Italy. I was enjoying the landscapes where there were trulli, rounded houses which are popular for their shapes. Then you have these beautiful beaches, which are completely different from other areas with their big round stones,” Herkner says in an interview hosted by Cappellini. “That’s the inspiration to create a modular sofa, a simple sofa, but with a roundness and an organic shape. I think, especially now with the Covid situation, nature is missing at home. Litos brings that back to our spaces.” Designed as a casual yet inviting piece that beckons rest and relaxation, Litos is endowed with voluptuous seats that blossom into a curvy, cosy frame reminiscence of Salento’s dramatic cliffs. Its

low back exudes a laid-back vibe, snugly cocooning the rounded seats. As a tribute to the sea in Salento, Litos presents a pleasant palette of earthy, natureinspired tones. While Litos is available as a standalone piece, this sofa also comes with a series of modular components to offer a variety of configurations. Additionally, the sofa provides the option of a single armrest or without armrests. The sofa’s structure, made of wood conglomerate and pine plywood, ensures a solid and sturdy profile. With its contemporary aesthetic and versatile modules, Litos is ideal for lounges, social spaces, and private rooms in hospitality settings. Removable covers and a selection of exciting fabric and leather collections add to Litos’ customisable design, which can be further accessorised with free cushions to create a highly personalised sofa. In 2021, Litos presents a collection of new seating elements, which opens up more configuration possibilities to create a highly adaptable seating piece for modern interiors.

H

ospitality in the pandemic era poses unprecedented challenges from every direction. As the world slowly recovers and hotels are opening their doors again, safety and sanitary practices take priority when it comes to quality hospitality. While hygiene is crucial, aesthetics and luxury are still important elements in hospitality spaces. Here’s where carpets play a multipurpose role in creating safe spaces within a hotel setting. Carpets do more than just cover floors; they also provide comfort and serve as a design and acoustical element. “Guests still prefer the flooring to be soft underfoot. Therefore, in such a case, carpet tiles can be used as a canvas for creating seamless and smooth visual cues which can also help promote social distance and encourage safe traffic patterns,” Carpets Inter ® observes, adding that as long as carpets are appropriately disinfected, it’s a safe interior feature to use. Designed to respond to current emerging aesthetic and practical requirements in new normal spaces, Headlands is a modular carpet tile collection that draws from the beauty of nature to offer a myriad of design possibilities. As its name suggests, this imaginative collection is inspired by the angular formations on cliff edges and how they merge and blend into a more natural soft organic form where they meet the water. Charming accent tones against an earthy, neutral-toned backdrop result in a variety of carpet tile options to suit different interior specifications. Immensely versatile, Headlands fits seamlessly with almost any interior themes, which makes it an ideal carpet tile for hotels and resorts where different areas require their own specific atmosphere. Headlands’ coordinating combinations of complementary hues also make it possible to create the perfect ambience. For example, soft neutrals enhance guestrooms with a lush and luxurious feel while colour highlights uplift lounges and social spaces and add character to corridors and walkways. For areas designated for rest and relaxation, Headlands provides luxurious underfoot comfort along with enhanced sound absorption to create a tranquil, intimate environment. As hygiene is a priority in hospitality spaces, Carpets Inter ® 100% SDN fibre carpets can be treated with Sanitized® to prevent stains and provide infection control. Sanitized® is antiviral, hygienic, and keeps away unpleasant odours caused by the colonization of microbes. Additionally, the Headlands collection features Ecosoft ® backing, which uses recycled PET bottles to ensure environmentally sustainable interiors. Ecosoft ® meets all the stringent performance criteria required for modular carpets and, at the same time, outperform most conventional hardbacks in terms of durability, underfoot comfort, acoustical propensity, and indoor air quality.

ere is an island you won’t mind being stranded on. Noonu, a sofa system designed by Antonio Citterio, takes its name from Noonu in the Maldives, an atoll famed for its constellation of exclusive, unspoilt islands protected by a sprawling coral reef. With the Noonu sofa, Citterio has taken the most relaxing aspects of island topography and translated it into a system of upholstery, where large, deep cushions create a vision of islands that seem to float and suspend into mid-air. “Noonu is a fully-fledged domestic island,” says Citterio. “The theme of islands started back in the mid-’80s when we invented a selection of new types with the Sity line. We started referring to sofas with ‘peninsulas’ and ‘islands’. What’s new in Noonu is the apparently suspended seating, which extends all the way to the floor, and the new types of elements that lend a certain identity and richness to the design”. voluptuous aesthetics come from a composition of four basic elements: a square and a rectangle, in addition to the brand-new “piano” and “sail” elements. The piano-inspired base forms an inviting curve within the backrest, merging with the generous, rounded volume in front that makes up the sail. Noonu is beautifully upholstered in fabric with 12 colour variants: solid colours and mélanges of neutral hues, along with sophisticated shades of blue, green, red, and orange. The bold yet laid back hues blend seamlessly with a combination of different components within the Noonu collection, as well as other elements from B&B Italia’s collections, allowing the freedom of customised seating landscapes. Noonu’s base, which features a metal profile made from curved, pre-shaped aluminium strip, comes in various finishes: bright brushed, black chrome painted, and pewter grey painted. To offer more options, Noonu will also be available in leather upholstery.

SOFT TOY AESTHETIC BY XIE AI GE

S

triking a balance between the ideal and reality, Xie Ai Ge sculpts figures that are poised, whimsical, reflective, and charming. Poetically conceptual at heart, Xie Ai Ge is inspired by Buddhist thought and the human spirit. With many of her works depicting men in nature, at peace or play, she draws on childhood memories of rural China and prominently features symbolic elements (such as birds for freedom and apples for desire) in her sculpted world. As part of her Toy Series, Xi Ai Ge continues a childhood inspiration where she had little access to stuffed toys. She masterfully transforms this nostalgia to joy by depicting a play of whimsical characters and happily oversized stuffed toys. “Good Brother 哥倆好“ sculpture features different textures while conserving her signature minimalistic aesthetic to tell a compelling story of two blood brothers who have forged a friendship that surpasses any other. Lee graduated from Kyunghee University in Korea after studying in the department of art education and obtained his Masters in the discipline of sculpture. He has participated in several exhibitions in Korea, America and Japan and features in numerous permanent collections in Asia.
