As we shift into a new era inspired by nature and well-being, hospitality design is making a leap into a world of dazzling opulence, redefining the meaning of luxury and comfort.

rom bespoke properties to urban hotels or contemporary resorts, every project is unique in itself. For FBEYE International, their portfolio, which comprises a broad range of hospitality projects, is an impressive look at how design can create a distinctive sense of place. Needless to say, I am in awe of their works and thrilled that they have decided to be part of this issue.

I am particularly fond of the InterContinental Hotel, where a luxurious Peranakan-style interior is achieved using elegant art pieces and artefacts from the colonial era. In contrast, the Oak wood Studios is a bold and playful take on luxury. Their signature red lips motif is definitely a memorable focal point, adding a cheeky, fun, and exciting vibe to the place.

This year’s Milan Fair has given us a plethora of exciting furnishing and design pieces from market leaders to explore. One of the best examples is Preciosa’s Crystal Harmony lighting installation, a stunning display that takes inspiration from mother nature yet is beautifully executed using new technology. Petals and bird wings are meticulously handcrafted from crystals to create a centrepiece for the Shangri-La Qiantan.

Rolf Benz MEG SOFT is the playfully soft twin sister to the newly released high-back armchair Rolf Benz MEG. Featuring an elegant hard shell contrasted by a soft core, MEG SOFT has a strikingly natural appearance. Along with its casually quilted seat interior, its gentle curves evoke a geometric, vibrant appearance while offering soft seating comfort. Both MEG and MEG SOFT come with an integrated rocking function, stepless seat height adjustment and a swivel function.

Comfort and elegance highlight Standalto, an incredibly soft sofa that retains the fundamental element of the “smart cushion” – a real revolution in relaxation and well-being. Within its plush form, a system of joints inside the backrest and armrest is exclusively engineered to ensure total ease while allowing you to shape it as you desire. Just a little pressure, and Standalto turns into a low, high, oblique or wraparound seating piece to complement your cosy moments.

Twiggy, a new family of seats by Rodolfo Dordoni, is notable for its capacity to transform living spaces with an unsurpassed ideal of eternal beauty. Twiggy manifests itself in multiple ways: originally available as just one armchair, available in Small, Large, and Deep sizes, with and without armrests, embellished with delicate stitching, the collection now includes a bench, couch, and chaise longue that can be utilised as a modular unit or as stylish standalone pieces.

COSY OVERTURES

MODERN CAPITONNÉ

Brimming with elegance, SoHo epitomises modernity, expressed using an articulate system with contem porary lines with details that tell the essence of craftsmanship. Designed by Carlo Colombo, this light and airy modular sofa, suspended on aluminium feet, features meticulous attention to the detailing on the armrest. SoHo is versatile, ideal for a wide range of spaces to conjure a sophisticated environment of comfort and luxury. The sofa also comes with a removable cover in fabric or leather.

Exquisite yet a ubiquitous element for living spaces, the Camargue collection is known for its timeless design in form and substance. With its aluminium structure, Camargue is at home anywhere – whether it’s a semi-outdoor space like a covered patio or terrace or gardens and poolsides. Carmague’s comprehensive, coordinated collection includes small armchairs, armchairs, and sofas that are all stackable and made to accommodate the broadest range of requirements in private residences and the hospitality industry.

STYLE AND SUBSTANCE COCOONED IN PARADISE

Reva Cocoon is designed with total freedom in mind. Featuring an exclusive system of lounge seats for outdoor use, each piece is highly adaptable and can be configured in a variety of ways to provide the greatest level of comfort. The range is notable for its eye-catching backrests made of stainless steel and rope woven from weather-resistant polypropylene. Its unique cord element further provides essential privacy while maintaining the piece of furniture’s airiness and brightness.

ERGONOMIC EXTRAORDINAIRE

An iconic collection from Cristina Celestino, the Aldora Sofa is conceived as a modern interpretation of classical concepts. Its sculptural backrest, which comfortably seats two people, stands out against the chair’s soft, feminine curves inspired by the charm of Milanese bourgeois decadence and modelled after the beautiful petals of the calla lily. With the Aldora Sofa, Christina Celestino created an exceptional masterpiece that draws on a variety of sources while paying tribute to her heritage.

A distinctive gaming table, Flamingo is evocative of the bourgeois casinos of the world’s most fascinating capitals. With its sculptural and harmonious shape, the table goes beyond the ordinary yet fits seamlessly in the home environment, complementing other furnishing elements. Designed as an accoutrement to the table, the Annette chair expresses a stylish nod to the famous poker player Annette Obrestad. Featuring an elegantly ergonomic profile, this lightweight chair ensures ultimate comfort in every setting.

The Eliseo armchair beautifully epitomises elegance, ergonomics and evenly balanced proportions within a versatile form that adopts an understated design language. Informed by incredible attention to detail, this seating piece features enveloping lines and soft padding to offer exceptional comfort. Eliseo also gives you the option of having a wood base in several finishes, or a cast aluminium base, equipped with a 360-degree swivel to provide interaction with the surrounding space in a flexible manner.

TOUCH OF CLASS GAME ON

There’s a sense of lightness and relaxed comfort with the Souvenir d’Italie two-seater outdoor sofa designed by Ludovica + Roberto Palomba. With its voluptuous proportions and simple design, the sofa’s lightness is emphasised by the cast aluminium support feet, creating a suspended appearance. The sofa’s large and plush cushions are mattresses with pronounced piping to highlight its silhouette. Finally, the armrests are simplified into two cylinders, evoking the idea of a garden bench.

The encompassing backrest of the graceful Arc chair is based upon a constant radius arc, a fundamental building block of geometry. The chair displays modest, graceful proportions, further enhanced by its light weight aluminium frame. Simple yet elegant braided strips adorn the backrest. In addition, the seat is upholstered in matching fabric with a detachable cover. Ideal for hotel lobbies and guest rooms, Arc is also perfect for cruise ships as well as residential settings.

Yoko, a delicate seating collection, combines Scan dinavian and Japanese design elements to create a harmonious appearance. Thanks to the skilled crafts manship of the talented Japanese-Danish design duo Inoda+Sveje, stylish contrast is maintained in perpetual equilibrium. The collection, which consists of an armchair, a dining armchair, and an ottoman bench, is shaped by the cross-referencing between these two cultures, their styles, and production techniques.

FLOATING PARASOL

Paladin redefines the classic wooden parasol into a floating canopy perched atop a mast, achieved via a mechanical principle that integrates the tension of the canopy into its structural logic. The result is impressive: the fabric withstands the tensile forces of the parasol when it is unfolded with just the pole and four movable struts. In addition, the mast goes straight through, leaving a central hole that serves as an indirect skylight and promotes airflow.

Nolita Sofa is an inviting outdoor seating piece designed for sociable moments amid an open space. Nolita maintains the collection’s original characteristic qualities of transparency and lightness, a perfect reminiscence of Mario Pedrali’s first metal garden chairs in 1963. Carefully created for total comfort, Nolita’s key features include linear elements comprising a steel tube frame powder-coated for outdoor usage, seat cushions made of polyurethane foam, and back cushions made of polyester.

The Rolf Benz YOKO sun lounger is the perfect addition to the delightful YOKO Outdoor line. At the same time, it is also a chic standalone piece for outdoor spaces. The sun lounger’s airy aesthetic is reflected in the soft radii of the aluminium frame, while YOKO’s exceptionally soft cushion with an optional pillow helps you drift away into blissful daydreams. The lounge is also easy to use, thanks to its integrated gas pressure spring.

SUNNY DAYS AHEAD

OUT IN THE OPEN

An impeccable icon of Marcio Kogan’s design philosophy, the Horizonte modular seating system arises from a clear architectural vision: to generate a feeling of sheer suspension by raising a solid form seven centimetres off the ground using a recessed plinth in matt black varnished metal. A sleek and elegant platform accommodating all the upholstered elements – seats, backrests and armrests – takes the sophisticated aesthetic further by creating large cushions with bold proportions and a robust character.

Dreamy and inviting, the Vibe bed is inspired by stylistic concepts from the 1930s. A smooth band on the headboard swivels as if it were a piece of art. Along with it is a circular Side Vibe bedside table, which can either be a standalone piece next to the bed or hooked onto the bed frame. Poetic and romantic, Vibe is more than a bed – it’s an expressive piece designed to make people feel good.

The dazzling Serpentine Carpet transforms a single piece of paper into an inspired masterpiece. Designed by Front, a whimsical play of paper resulted in organic and twisted shapes that look like a serpentine swirl. Every bend and fold is in a natural, continuous flow, coming together like a perfect mathematical equation. Additionally, the appearance of a three-dimensional pattern is created by different colour gradients and shadow effects. Serpentine Carpet is available in four vibrant colours.

Dramatic twists, creative turns – the Serpentine Light by Front holds a world of creative mystery within its paper-made structure. This lighting piece is ultimately an experiment of tension and flow to test the boundaries of the various shapes paper may take. All around, sleek dark lines appear like a neverending ascending spiral. Furthermore, the virtually translucent material evokes a natural flow and curve that equally disperses the light, illuminating living spaces with a definitive glow.

The Lobby Lounge features colonial pillars, white washed and juxtaposed with traditional furniture pieces and contemporary lounge chairs. Coloured tiles with traditional laser-cut motifs commonly used in Peranakan houses line the bases of the pillars, while the ceiling treatment stands out with a contem porary interpretation of the Peranakan tile motifs developed from a laser cut-out. Throughout the spaces, bespoke and custom-made furniture pieces, carpets and décor components come together cohesively to evoke a sense of time and timelessness at once.

MIDDLE: Entrance to Ash & Elm is via a oversized timber pivot door with a cheese room opposite.

Ash & Elm, the latest addition to the InterContinental Singapore’s collection of dining establishments is a vibrant restaurant focused on European Dining. This dynamic space transforms throughout the day via a skylight canopy which runs the length of the dining area providing a sense of movement, as palm tree shadows and natural daylight provide an ever-changing colour palate to the space in the day, by night LED lighting throws washes of colour over the ceiling giving it a very contemporary feel. FBEYE International integrated the use of natural materials in the outlet such as the butcher-block worktops, a mixture of exotic marbles, aged oak timber and mosaic tiles in the flooring. Concealed induction tops allow the counter by the open kitchen to perform as a buffet by day and two chefs’ tables in the evening, creating two spaces within one. The main dining area can be split into three different zones during dining, a requirement from the owners. Timber walls introduce an organic feel to the space as well as enabling an atmosphere of liveliness. In the evening, Pendant lights, comprising offhand-cut polished crystals are illuminated, helping to set the mood, making it cosier and inviting for guests.

FBEYE INTERNATIONAL SELECTIVELY USED TRADITIONAL FABRICATION TECHNIQUES, LIKE BLOCK PRINTING IN THE TOWER ROOMS TO CREATE PERANAKAN-INSPIRED MOTIFS FOR THE PADDED SILK COVERING ON CUSTOM HEADBOARDS ABOVE THE BEDS, WHILE CHOOSING MORE CONTEMPORARY SURFACE TREATMENTS IN WHITE, GOLD, AND DUCK EGG BLUE TONES TO STRIKE A BALANCE BETWEEN THE OLD AND THE NEW WITHIN THE CULTURALLY INSPIRED ROOMS.

The guest rooms of InterContinental Singapore strengthen the design essence of the hotel through a careful blend of contemporary luxuries and historical references. The shophouse wing rooms were given major overhauls, with everything designed in the rooms from the floor to the ceiling, free standing mini bars with Chinoiseries designs, woven fabrics, carpet designs, and local artist artworks. Inspired by ornate art, ceramics, and eye-catching embroidery, the design exudes a residential feel that is tranquil without being over imposing. A representation of Peranakan detailing is expressed in a contemporary way.

We wanted to create something that spoke of the local architecture of Bugis. This was achieved using vibrant colours, textures, and details that remained true to the historical aspect of the hotel’s original design. It was a historical district, so we worked to bring back the integrity of the original designs that are unique. We replicated intricate wood detailing on the ceilings, we uncovered artefacts and light fixtures that we gave life to again.

The design for the English bar was drawn from the traditional English pubs found all over UK since early 1900s. The style has remained constant for many years now until the introduction of the gastro bar recently. The roof design for the English bar follows the patterns extracted from the traditional Chippendale English mouldings and styling.

Grey is the colour tone for the typical bathroom. Fantasia Brown marble is used on the vanity counters and the wall at the bathroom. The Grey granite is used on the floors and entrance walls.

The design theme from the main lobby follows through and is continued in the Presidential suite. Laser cut MDF Board with lacquer paint finish on the headboard and ceiling highlights the city’s road system, with the blue wall being a printed fabric from a local interpretation of a floral pattern, the accent punch colour. The window is designed as a picture frame, framing views of Dhaka City.

| HOTELRESORTDESIGN.COM

The overall design theme for the executive club lounge exudes professionalism, restraint, and certain gravitas, a space that conveys a formal and respect able character. The patterns on the partitions, walls, ceiling, and carpets are linear and they complement each other and tie back to the cartography theme running throughout the hotel.

Taking inspiration from the Le Meridien Brand Heritage, the carpets in typical guestrooms represent the sonic boom of the “Air France Concorde, being the first owners of LM brand”

The newly renovated villas at Taj Exotica Goa, designed by FBEYE International, are a radical twist on the original design. Before commencing the design for the newly renovated villas at Taj Exotica Goa, designers FBEYE International researched island wide, delving into Goa’s past and visiting many of the old historical homes once owned by rich barons of industry, some still housing their families now, many generations forward. Throughout the design process, the aim was to create a modern interpretation of the historic past, highlighting the array of bright colours and capturing the essence of the real Goa. The villas are designed to have a fresh approach to resort living, on entering guests are immediately drawn to how light the villa is, despite its traditional exterior feel. Timber floors flow from the entrance to the sleeping and living area, to the gardens and in some villas, the pool at the rear.

As hotel designs evolved, the idea of the lobby solely being a place for guests to check in has changed dramatically, current hotel trends now expanding the lobby to change from the traditional setup, Amari is no exception. From the lobby guests, can access the spa, restaurant, function areas, bar, deli, all centred around the reception area, allowing the café(bakery), lounge and meeting places to play a larger role in the social areas whilst also providing common places for guests to relax, organize, meet, greet, eat or do work-related tasks. After the global pandemic, how do you see the future of the Carpet Industry and its challenges?

It is great to win this Yacht & Aviation Awards and other hospitality and commercial awards. Winning this means a lot to me because it proves that ‘we are taking it to the sky’! Aviation carpets do more than just provide aesthetics. As safety is extremely critical in all aircraft, these carpets are also a central element in fulfilling stringent technical and performance requirements. Hence, this award is an important recognition of our product safety and performance.

It impacted our business in terms of sales and manufacturing. It’s not just the global hospitality and tourism industry that has been negatively affected by COVID 19; the supply chain of raw materials experienced the same predicament too. We have faced potential delays of raw materials and short shipment from our suppliers. Fortunately, our logistic team has managed the situation well to avoid any carpet production delay.

The global COVID-19 situation was our biggest challenge in the past two years. At this time, we could not travel and could only communicate with customers, distributors, and colleagues via video conferences and calls. Moreover, with an uncertain global economy, hotel owners were unlikely to spend much money on renovation projects. Many new projects were also put on hold. With fewer projects in the market, competition has naturally become more intense.

Yes, carpet is usually a ‘must-have’ item in hotel guestrooms, corridors, and public areas due to its noise absorption abilities. With such product advantage, carpets like Broadloom are not only used in hotels but also in other segments like casinos, convention centres, airports and many high-traffic places.

How has COVID 19 impacted the manufacturing Industry?

I manage APAC (except Thailand) and EMEA’s overall operations and performance, including all entities and distributors. The sense of success of creating some thing from scratch to finish is unbelievable!

Broadloom Carpet has always been considered and used for hospitality interior for a long time; do you see any opportunity in any other segments?

TOP: The brand offers the option of hand-carved accents to create a truly one-of-a-kind floor covering.

I personally believe that we will gradually bounce back in both the APAC and EMEA hospitality market when the pandemic is over. As the carpet industry moves in tandem with the hospitality and tourism industry, our growth rate will depend on the ‘open door’ policy of these countries. Royal Thai takes one step beyond WHO guidelines for COVID-19 by introducing Vi-Guard, our treated carpet with hygiene protection that guards against unwelcome bacteria, microbial and the coronavirus. Vi-Guard is available for all Royal Thai products. In addition to application during production, Vi-Guard can be reapplied post-installation if required.

With a flexible design concept at its core, Crystal Skin is meticulously crafted to shift in space through shape and sparkle. Two essential parts highlight its customisable linear structure to convey a visually engaging form. First are the crystal components which allow designers to select the rod, colour, and finish they desire to achieve their artistic vision. The second element is Crystal Spin’s malleable frame. Designers can manoeuvre the shape to fit their design and complement it with their choice of finishing. The flexible nature of the frame makes room for a wide range of design possibilities, for instance, installing Crystal Spin in atriums and skylights.

Q: What inspires you when you design? What is your design approach and signature style?

A: There was always a deep interest in design and architecture inside me. For my studies, I followed these interests and studied architecture in Vienna. But of course, new interests are coming along and so I also studied Building Science where I could combine new technologies and especially computation in the fields. During this time I co-founded a Czechdesign, a design platform and also started working on my own projects together with a friend which ended in establishing my own studio (Vasku & Klug). The studio was growing and making progress, so we continued after our studies and I also was teaching at university for 5Lightingyears.

Q: In your opinion, what are some of the key lighting trends for 2022 and beyond? How would these be reflected in your upcoming projects for Preciosa?

Q: What unique features of this installation stand out to you the most and why?

A: There are always many challenges with these kinds of projects. Luckily, we have a very skilled team from many different backgrounds. The biggest challenge with interactive installations is always to bring it all together that it looks very simple, natural and works compeltey intuitive. All the technical solutions like fixing points, technical equipment, computers, sensors, speakers, etc need to be invisible so that the focus is clearly on the main part.

ANDREAS KLUG HAVE BEEN OVERSEEING THE CREATIVE DIRECTION OF PRECIOSA LIGHTING SINCE 2016. A: I don’t like to bring it down to one particular feature. For me and in our designs it is always about the overall experience, the scenography from the first impression to the moments you discover the hidden features. But if I have to, I would say it is the that it makes people smile and sparkle.

Q: What were some of the challenges in designing this piece? How did you and your team resolve them?

A: The inspiration usually comes from all kinds of fields. I’m very much interested in history and cultures, which is an endless sources. At the same time, it is always important to have an overview of the current trends in society. With all we do, we usually address people and have to be able to speak their language in one or the other way. Therefore my design work always starts with intense work on the question of the particular project. As Einstein once said, if I have 1h to solve a problem, I will spend 55 minutes to understand the problem and 5 minutes to solve it.

Q: How would you describe the experience and effect of the Composition in Crystal installation at the recent Milan Design Week?

Q: Can you share with us your professional journey? What inspired you to venture into architecture as well as the lighting design – specifically, being a Creative Director at Preciosa Lighting?

A: CIC was intended as an interactive light and sound installation. It should make visitors feel like little children, full of curiosity and eager to explore some thing new and magical. From all the sparkle I saw in countless faces, young and old, I think it worked.

Michael Vasku CREATIVE DIRECTOR

VIEWPOINTS OF LIGHTING DESIGN DUO MICHAEL VASKU &

A: The lighting trends are very much connected to trends in interior design and living. In this regard, I see the trend for lighting to get even more atmospheric to support interior atmospheres. Because of that, it is most important for me to understand our clients and especially partners, the interior designers the best to support their vision with our lighting designs.

design was never a real focus of mine. It came as part of the package with Preciosa. With the work in our studio we shifted more and more in design strategy and the possibility of the position as Creative Directors in Preciosa was the logic next step to work on a company’s design strategy, brand positioning and also implement it.

A: The installation follows our idea of showing playful interactive designs, which started four years ago. Light is a very sensual element in interiors, strongly capable of evoking emotions. With interactivity, we see a possibility to bring that to another level by not only telling a story but inviting visitors to become part of that story which is an emotional experience hopefully turning into a nice memory.

Preciosa rose from a client in presentations to their own project. Our task as CDs of moving the company into a design brand with a new orientation and position on the market made and still makes it very challenging but even more interesting on a daily base. With every day you discover new things you need to learn – culturally, technically, personally, …

All interactive installations are based on our Signature Designs. With these interactive installations, we can not only show our technical capabilities but also give an idea and specifically our interpretation of what light installations could look like in the future.

Andreas Klug CREATIVE DIRECTOR

ABOUT COMPOSITION IN CRYSTAL

Q: Can you describe your professional journey? What led you to venture into architectural design in the lighting business? What’s your experience as Creative Director at Preciosa Lighting?

A: I studied architecture and economics. During that time I already worked on many temporary architecture projects, mainly large fairs around the globe, which turned out to be a good lesson for understanding Sales and Marketing. At the same time Michael and me started collaborating on projects together and eventually found our own studio with focusing on design & architecture, eventually design strategy and computational design.

Q: What are some unique features that were employed for this installation to bring out the unique concept?

Q: Can you elaborate on the inspiration and concept behind the amazing Composition in Crystal at the recent Milan Design Week?

A: The inspirations for this installation were coming from two directions, on the one side from the “crystal clear” sound of crystal. The Crystal itself is solid and visually a beautiful material. At the same time, it has a nice tuneable sound to it. Needless to say how quickly the idea of a crystal Glockenspiel was born. On the other side we wanted to combine sound and light in an spatial installation. Like a hidden orchestra, with one musician with one particular instrument behind each crystal rod waiting to be conducted by the visitor.

Q: In your opinion, what does the future of architecture and design as well as light design look like?

A: Design for me always starts with curiosity and understanding. Design always has a task and as a designer, it is your job to formulate the task first and give a possible answer as best as you can.

A: The combination was crucial for this concept. On the one side that light and music are reacting in tune and the impression is very intuitive. Lower tones were creating different light effects than middle or higher tones. The light effects were also different and coming from different areas: low tones from the side, high tones more at the top. As you naturally would expect these tones coming from. On the other side, it should be playful and inspire people to play together. For that, the light effect and the music were always coming from one specific direction according to which side the rods were hit. This allowed two people to compose their music together by playing from two sides. Consequently the light effects and sound of one player were coming from one side and opposite from the other player. This made it distin guishable for the players who played what and made them react to what the other one was doing.

Q: What’s your design approach and philosophy? Where do you get your inspiration?

A: Hopefully bright ;)

It should look easy and simple – although all the hidden technical equipment behind the walls.

Q: How does this installation help to further elevate and position the Preciosa brand in the lighting market?
