Brand van Egmond was founded by William Brand in 1989. The atelier, based in The Netherlands, is well known for their artistic and sculptural approach towards lighting.

As all lighting is created by hand, there is also the opportunity for tailor-made lighting: allowing for a perfect customised lighting sculpture for any given space.

Every year new collections are born, and find themselve in some of the most beautiful spaces across the globe. Their clientele ranges from Royals till Rappers. While the expression ‘man is not an island’ rings true in most cases, this sofa ‘archipelago’ by Rolf Benz emphasises how much of a blessing it can be to spend time in the cosy company of others. Sturdily upholstered with a low back to accommodate varied sitting styles and positions, the Freistil 135 was created with mixed living situations in mind. Easily configurable, it ingeniously celebrates living at its most versatile.

Devised as a combined respite for body and soul, the Radar chair’s soft but decisive lines are evocative of a retro science fiction film. Its simple, rational lines are a relief to rest one’s eyes upon while its wide and sumptuously curved back provides ample support for one’s weary limbs. The broad swivel base is also a clever and aesthetically complementary addition, allowing the sitter to pivot and recline with ease.

Designed by Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan for Minotti, this striking modular seating system takes a cue from the classic teak duckboard used in the yachting industry to facilitate the outflow of water. Composed of suspended square platforms, the exceptionally lightweight Quadrado is intended for outdoor spaces. Featuring solid wooden bases and a varied reconfigurable typology, whereby sitting elements are punctuated with purposeful wooden surfaces, Kogan’s laidback design is complemented by its nature-inspired palette.

The sleek lines and lavish materiality of this statement-making sofa make it a godsend. Consisting of several well-formed elements that come together to make a cohesive whole, the Essential sofa holds true to its namesake. Designed by Roberto Lazzeroni, the Pegaso is a uniquely crafted bed that sets the stage for a restful yet stylish night’s sleep. Created with the explicit intention of redefining the sleeping area, its sensuously curved headboard wraps purposefully around the top part of the double bed, shielding the sleeper from random distractions. The distinctive structure brings the design’s lightweight nature to the fore while the pared-back palette spells rest and relaxation.

Piero Lissoni never ceases to surprise and delight with his gorgeously thought-provoking designs. Proving the point is the organically shaped Eda-Mame sofa, a clever fusion of three types of seating, namely, high-back chair, easy chair and pouf. Paying tribute to the quirky form of a soy bean, the strong sculptural contours of Eda-Mame’s moulded foam seat and backrest make this impressive piece boldly impactful in both residential and public areas.

Rolf Benz knows a thing or two about fine craftsmanship and engineering. Demonstrative its industry know-how, the ever-progressive German brand teamed up with Berlin designers Böttcher & Kayser to dream up Freistill 133. Described as a sofa that ‘combines bear and bird legs’, the composition of this unique piece toys with the idea of balance; the voluminous framework is daringly perched on slim metal legs, giving off a feeling of precariousness.

Albert & Ile is a family of vintage-inspired pieces that differ in shape but are united in terms of their overall design. Created as an homage to Minotti’s late founder Alberto and his wife, Ileana on their 70th anniversary, the collection’s latest edit, which features a range of seating as well as a coffee table, reinterprets the aesthetics of the 50s and 60s. Simultaneously fun and sophisticated, the pieces do justice to Minotti’s vibrant outlook.

Inspired by terra cotta, Obon is a three table-range that bring to mind archaeological sites and ancient rituals. The culmination of a painstaking process involving the combination of shapes and volumes, these simple yet graphically striking pieces take on the essence of precious discoveries and the sense of returning to a fascinating age defined by folklore and tradition. Ceccotti Collezioni has a penchant for elegant furniture with an edgy twist. The Italian premium brand’s Roberto Lazzeroni-designed PIRUETTE chair has hit a high note with admirers of its signature approach to luxury furniture. The piece’s intricate solid American walnut frame cuts a fine figure, winsomely showcasing a curved plywood seat upholstered in fabric leather or natural leather. ILLUMINATING PRESENSE

Fond of bouquets and expressive light fixtures? Moooi’s Chalice 48 Metallic Grey affably combines the two. Enhanced by a soft metallic grey body, this eclectically wrought chandelier by Dutch designer Edward van Vilet features a cluster of translucent silver glass chalices that are fastened with black rings at the base. Available in two sizes, this vaguely disco ball-like light piece, which also doubles as a ceiling sculpture, may be dimmed for additional atmosphere.

Preciosa, the designers of the Pearl Wave were tasked with a very specific brief: create an interactive light installation that could be installed on a yacht or cruise ship. The extraordinary piece also had to embody the ability to surprise incoming visitors and make them smile. It’s safe to say that the final breathtaking result, featuring a mix of handmade opal spheres hung from gold metal rods, fulfilled the aforementioned criteria and then some.

Spatial acoustics are kept consistently in check with Silent Field, an innovative LED-based ceiling light by Artemide with energy-friendly properties. Long acknowledged as a pioneer of cutting edge light works and installations, the Italian brand has clearly gone all out with the design of this multi-purpose piece. A slightly space age vibe is reinforced by its flattened geometry, which serves as a soundabsorbing surface characterised by round threedimensional hollows of varying depth.

he Italian architect and designer Rodolfo Dordoni had ropes on his mind when he created the Bitta series of outdoor furniture for Kettal, the Spanish outdoor furnishings company, in 2009. Merging artisanal techniques with both earthy and modern materials, the designer turned to traditional rope braiding, albeit with polyester cords, to fashion the seats which are tethered to aluminium frames. “My aim was to create dense braiding that would still allow air through. The braiding is reminiscent of the ropes used to moor boats — hence the name Bitta, which means ‘mooring’ in Italian — resulting in the pieces looking lightweight, while resembling cosy nests in natural colours to sit back and relax in,” Dordoni said. A modular collection that includes dining armchairs, stools, 2- and 3-seater sofas, corner and central modules, daybeds and swings, the pieces can be combined in any way to create the perfect décor for any personal outdoor space. All the pieces are made from waterproof materials such as the aluminium

frames and polyester seats while the table tops are crafted from teak and stone. The chairs, stools, sofas, modules and daybeds also boast deep cushions. Almost a decade on, this Kettal icon is now a classic that has been updated and reinvented, thanks to its form and rational concept. Without departing from the original design, a new version features new finishes such as aluminium and teak legs as well as Bela ropes and Parallel fabrics. The colour palette of the cords has also been expanded to include Kaki, Marengo and Grey. An extendable table is the newest member of the collection, and is available with a teak, marble or aluminium top. A point of pride for Kettal: Its European-made quality products are manufactured in the firm’s plant in a small coastal town 45 km from Barcelona. Having an in-house manufacturing facility means paying close attention to details and having the capability to customise the products according to clients’ individual requirements, making each piece of furniture personalised and exclusive.

patially, the interior plan adheres to a typical anatomy of a house. Upon entrance, a vestibule that is also a retail space holds and re-directs guests to the hallway, which opens up to the heart of the interior. A massive activity space, the kitchen features five live stations and buffet. Much like a typical house, the kitchen is adjoined by dining hall, guest lounge, parlour and gallery -- which welcome guests to sit down, dine and socialise. To complement the interior design concept of a home, the lighting design had to deliver performance that resonates with one’s feeling at home: at ease, relaxed and comfortable. On the flip side of the same

coin, functionally the lighting delivers a flexible installation which could be varied throughout the day as the all day dining operates from breakfast to dinner. ‘We wanted guests to feel encouraged to explore and pick a location they felt happy with, with its large footplate there were many opportunity to introduce different levels of ambience creating spaces that we hope would cater for a large varied audience’ says Simon Berry (Partner at illuminate). Defining the lighting vernacular is integration, with downlights blend seamlessly to ceiling in thoughtful positioning, such that lighting fixtures enhances the visual order and symmetry of space. in lighting fixtures impart ambience luminescence to the atmosphere from the meet and greet at the entrance through to the heat and drama of the open cook / buffet space, all the way to the more relaxed seating areas which also consisted of a drinks / servery area requiring its own treatment. ‘It’s always interesting working on a food and beverage space as you not only need to be creative in your intent, careful of your colour temperatures, but you also need to establish lighting layers at an early stage, this ensures you have the flexibility in commissioning especially when table arrangements are changed’ say Kurniawati (Senior Designer at illuminate) The colonial style interior adopted high contrast finishes dominated by dark timber screens and panelling. textures, it also adds warmth to the atmosphere by picking up the honey-hued materials at warm colour temperature of 2700K. The marriage of light treatments with decorative elements in sectioned areas such as the gallery, lounges and private dining rooms brings ‘old glamour’ to mind. In these areas, layers of light creates rich atmosphere, punching accents to highlight displayed decorations, whilst illuminating functional surfaces and filling pockets of interests with luminous glow. Ultimately, an unforgettable dining experience is one that thrills all senses and Grand Cafe exceeded on all counts. It is hard to imagine a more luxurious restaurant in Jakarta to lounge your afternoon away.

TO STIMULATE THE FEARLESS CURIOSITY FROM WITHIN GUESTS, THE TEAM CHALLENGED THE IDEA OF “TRUE AUTHENTICITY” AND PROPOSED A VISUAL ANSWER VIA FORGOTTEN MATERIALS.

i’an served as the imperial capital during dynastic China and is steeped in some of the richest cultures and historic events of that time. It is famously home to the terracotta army of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. In more recent times though, the city is also wellknown for integrating modern city planning amongst the well-preserved buildings and palaces from the days of yore. With a diverse mix of the now and the traditional, Xi’an is the ideal city to breathe new life into the Renaissance brand, which aims to court a particular type of clientele: the fearless explorer who expects the unexpected or the experimental braves who desire to uncover urban legends or hidden cuisines for that euphoric sense of new knowledge, and of course, wanderlust. The design team at Wilson Associates rose to this challenge by creating a play of contrasts – nostalgic yet young design – for the Renaissance Xi’an Hotel. Known for their advanced understanding of individualism and social structure at that time, the design team from Wilson Associates recreated the configuration of the ancient housing systems joined with a central courtyard by spreading out and connecting nodes of smaller spaces (families) via a centralized interactive area (courtyard). And to stimulate the fearless curiosity from within guests, the team challenged the idea of “true authenticity” and proposed a visual answer via forgotten materials, such as scavenged terracotta roof tiles reassembled as a feature wall whose texture and color suggest the distinctive ridgelines of China’s mountains. While these sustainable design elements bring an industrial appeal to the table, bespoke furniture pieces paired with fabric colour accents inspired by different dynasties of historic China coalesce into a contextual connection with a twist, hence delivering mixed features of ‘High and Low’, ‘Old meets New’ approach.

MIDDLE: With a diverse mix of the now and the traditional, Xi’an is the ideal city to breathe new life into the Renaissance brand.

The Instagrammable grand staircase leads to the second level and features a retake on an ancient detail coupled with a bold architectural language. Other unique pieces like the mobile DJ booth on a local tricycle, retail caravan, or even sudden design gestures of unfinished material surfaces add another level of unexpectedness. Renaissance Xi’an Hotel consists of 395 hotel rooms and every unit is characterized to be spaciously cosy and timelessly newfangled. With the target to create a benchmark product, Wilson Associates underwent meticulous studies of guest needs and guestroom facilities. Household items taken from the olden days such as washboards and pole ladders are creatively integrated into the rooms as storage shelving, ‘Tangram’ puzzble sofa settings can be altered to any individual’s likings, and traditional artworks are reimagined as their contemporary cousins, bringing dabs of modish vibrant colours into the rooms and evoking an unscripted touch of nostalgia and playfulness. Breaking away from the norms, designated suites have the capability to divide into smaller guestrooms or form spaces to host smaller niche / culinary events.

ilson Associates brings a revolutionary design to the Signiel Hotel situated between levels 76 to 101 of the 555-metertall landmark Lotte World Tower, Seoul’s tallest and the fifth highest building in the world. Regarded as Korea’s most luxurious hotel, Signiel Hotel offers an extravagant experience for guests and introduces the world to Seoul’s newest sensation. Inspired by the idea of a “mansion in the sky,” Wilson Associates combined comfort and luxury with a twist on traditional Lotte properties. The design team used height as a key element in this project and featured double-height ceilings to embody a sense of airiness, reminiscent of floating clouds and to evoke a sense of grandeur as guests experience each of the spaces. Signiel Hotel’s interior harmoniously blends the elements of East and West and showcases a contemporary aesthetic mixed with Korean influences from art, ceramics and calligraphy. Korean culture and heritage can be found in every room in the form of Mugunghwa: Korea’s national flower, which symbolizes peace, happiness and unity. In the lobby, the main staircase encircles a flower installation representative of Mugunghwa, offering guests a 360-degree view of the cascading piece. The hotel’s reception desk is inspired by the traditional Korean household table and also set against a backdrop of Mugunghwa flowers completely crafted by local artisans and made from white Korean ceramic. tapering shape but also to draw design cues from Korean heritage. References to Korean culture are found throughout such as the custom-made hand embroidered wallcovering above the bed, depicting a Mugunghwa tree gently swaying in the breeze with the intention to have guests “rest” under the tree. The hand-tufted rug in every bedroom has patterns found on the traditional Korean costume “Hanbok”. The team also used a palette of purples and pale blues - two unconventional colors - for a soft, luxurious feeling in the guest rooms. These two colors were selected as they are commonly found in Korean ceramic ware. The Royal Suite features a two-story living room with a large chandelier and custommade mother of pearl elements. The bathroom of the Master bedroom has a large soaking Jacuzzi tub located next to the curtain wall, providing dramatic sunset views. One of the many design highlights of the hotel is Bar 81, an upscale champagne bar paired with a panoramic sky view. Wilson Associates enveloped the double-volume space in white stone caged in satin brass compartments, a play on the traditional cellars found in Europe. Inspired by the song “Champagne Supernova” by the band Oasis, the team worked with

he Hilton Jinan South Hotel & Residences is a refreshing urban hotel near the city core, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, natural springs and lush scenery. The hotel thoughtfully incorporates original art, modern architecture, distinctive dining experiences, and seamless technology into the design and guest experience. The hotel interior has a spatial advantage of vast, unobstructed double volumes in open areas such as lobbies and the all-day dining restaurant. On multiple levels, the volume of space is constantly mimicked with canopies of intrigue and metal screens to accentuate an effortless spatial transition between rooms. eligama Bay, the Marriott Resort & Spa commissioned Wilson Associates to transform the property into a contemporary urban resort to attract both independent international travelers and families. The property breaks away from the rustic and more Mediterranean style typical of most hotels in the area and has a bold, contemporary design in keeping with its imposing edifice. Wilson Associates renovated the lobby areas, guestrooms, food and beverage spaces, health club, ballroom and spa. The inspiration behind the design was based on Beeralu Lace, a type of lace famous across Sri Lanka and used in all kinds of fabric applications. The patterns of the lace are prevalent as a motif throughout the hotel, in the guestrooms and the walls, both to provide a touch of Sri Lankasense of the destination and to create a warm atmosphere contrasting with the structure of the hotel. Key design features include the lobby and reflective pool with the lobby offering the best view of the sunset whilst the space is designed to enhance the panoramic view of the ocean. Wilson Associates also created an elongated fireplace in the middle of the reflective pool to turn on once the sun has set to provide a point of visual interest for diners. At the seafood bar, Wilson Associates created stilts to mirror fishermen fishing in the sea. Most of the materials were sourced in Sri Lanka or India. Lace, rattan, timbre and stones were all obtained locally, making up about 80 percent of the materials. The artwork was created by local artists to ensure a Sri Lankan feel and to champion local talent.

he first Sofitel to open in Malaysia, this 17-story, 312-room hotel is situated in the residential area of Damansara Heights. Wilson Associates was awarded the full scope for the hotel; from the guest rooms to the lobby, all day dining, restaurant, health club, ballroom, meeting rooms and executive lounge. Guests are greeted at the entrance of the lobby by a 10-meter suspended art installation, an abstract expression of the constant rain in Kuala Lumpur with the legends of local folklore inscribed into the transparent pieces. The guestrooms include a walk-in closet that are contemporary in design with French influences evident in the burgundy accents, velvet and bespoke details. The rooms play on the definition of being “French” or how the French value personal appearances: a feature wall consists of a series of carved vanity mirrors and whimsy is added with bespoke throw pillows in the bedrooms, with sunglasses and eyelashes representing men and women, respectively.

ilson Associates has spearheaded the residential showflats and sales gallery landscape in China with the groundbreaking design of Huafa Guanggang Showflats and Sales Center, an unprecedented residential project completed in April 2017. The concept is a celebration of the rebellious spirit felt during the French Revolution, in which intriguing architectural icons were heralded both for being impactful and provocative. Wilson Associates shared the same spirit of innovation when designing Huafa Guanggang Sales Center and Showflats and brought a unique and distinctive concept in residential architecture in China. By creating very individual and intriguing pieces throughout the space and balancing those with a well-crafted modern interpretation of a classical architectural language, the Huafa Guanggang Showflats and Sales Center reflect an atmosphere of luxe

and glamour. Wilson Associates created a contemporary interpretation of a modern yet classic interior architecture with strong emphasis on black and white contrasting hues. The design team curated a collection of contemporary furniture pieces to show a bold sense of taste for a discerning clientele, to prominently display textures, and to emphasize the tactile experiences with intuitive detailing. The sensitive balance of contrasting black and white with bold furniture pieces positioned in the lobby and bar is comparable to the engaging balance of abstract impressionism in art, where the furniture pieces perform as sculptures within a strong visual architectural canvas. The “168” Huafa Guanggang Showflat is targeted towards a mature family demographic and showcases a flexible use of space by creating distinct pockets of social zones, such as the open kitchen, dining area, and the study which can also be deconstructed into

one generous-sized social zone. Minimal hues are used in the interior architecture but complemented with bold fabric selections for the furniture pieces and paired with other elements such as bespoke walk-in closets with leather hand-stitched drawers, curated wood veneer panels, and Italian white marble-adorned bathroom walls and countertops to create a luxurious, crafted atmosphere. The unique layout for the oft-challenging small footprint presents a circulation flow by connecting spaces and creating an interesting lifestyle concept that is quite unseen in China. Another distinct feature is the guest bedroom, where the door can be opened 180 degrees allowing its en suite bathroom to transform into a powder room. These are unique features that provide flexible use of space according to individual preferences.

stunning urban restaurant unlike anything else in Singapore, Adrift, combines contemporary design with nostalgic charm, blending the essence of California and Asia in all aspects of the design. This eclectic and lively restaurant is a sculptural masterpiece within the Marina Bay Sands resort that pays homage to the wanderlust spirit of restauranteur David Myers. The cocktail bar alludes to a vintage speakeasy with diffused lighting, leather bar stools, antiqued metal screens and charred timber accents – it’s the ideal stage for artisanal mixology. This nostalgic ambiance echoes throughout the entire restaurant. In the garden parlour, timber benches hang from the ceiling. The space is enchanting and ethereal with subtle floral accent pillows that allude to the wall of greenery outside. It’s an unexpected contrast to the bar’s urban undertones. The private dining room has a surrealist library aesthetic with quirky accessories and vintage photographs set inside light boxes. This space was designed to host intimate conversations over bottles of wine and shared small plates. While the Blueplate design team worked to create a variety of spaces with distinct personalities, they infused each one with hints of energizing greenery: hanging terrariums, planted centerpieces, and succulent accents – adopting a garden theme inspired by Singapore’s vision as a green city and the surrounding landscape of Marina Bay Sands and adjacent Gardens by the Bay.

TOP: Rustic charm meets chic contemporary design in this well-styled restaurant space created with a sense of intimacy.

The project site uniquely challenged the team to design a space from an architectural perspective that could live in the iconic 50-story atrium at Marina Bay Sands. It needed to be both congruent with the existing aesthetic and also have a unique identity. The Blueplate team created an alluring “peek-a-boo” enclosure, which lures guests inside, and once there, kept them engaged. The layered timber and metal construction is a beautiful backdrop for the restaurant’s cocktail bar and lounge area. Chef David Myers designed the kitchen, and Blueplate designed the show kitchen to be clad in reclaimed barn wood from the USA, allowing the renowned American chef a sense of place for his first restaurant in Singapore. To design a celebrity chef restaurant in the heart of such an iconic hotel was a massive opportunity for a design studio. It was also the perfect project for an interior design practice to express their ideas in both large-scale architectural form as well as delicate interior detailing. We aim to create branded environments, where the guest can engage with the concept’s DNA. We’re fortunate to have worked with some of the world’s most esteemed chef’s and restaurant developers who have a defined vision and clear understanding of who they are.

The architecture is modern, taking inspiration from the sleek and aerodynamic features of planes. Further reinforcing the concept of flight, suspended lighting channels hover over the main dining area, providing diffuse and directional lighting. Furniture, fixtures, and other equipment provides a touch of nostalgia through pieces such as antique looking bar stools and tweed seat cushions. The main bar’s backdrop for wine and liquor shelves is made up of different-sized beveled mirrors, reminiscent of crystal whiskey glasses. Following requirements set by the Gordon Ramsay Group, the restaurant would cater to a wide range of passengers, from those looking for a quick bite to those hungry for a full meal. The space planning translates to areas based on how much time passengers have before their flight. The grab & go is nearest to the entrance, while a private dining area is furthest within the restaurant. This approach, along with a color scheme of “summer & autumn” tries to inject a fresh vibe and warmth to the restaurant.

read Street Kitchen at Marina Bay Sands brings Chef Gordon Ramsay’s signature British European cuisine to Singapore. Like its sister properties in London and Hong Kong, Bread Street Kitchen is an intimate, atmosphere-driven dining experience that is part industrial warehouse chic and part bustling city brasserie. Designed by Wilson Associates’ Blueplate Studios, the two-story restaurant and bar stays true to the brand’s East London industrial roots. However, the design team re-invented certain brand elements to create a distinct sense of place, starting with the floors and ceilings. The Blueplate team re-configured the iconic black-and-white tiled floors, turning them into abstracted geometric patterns that add a quirky playfulness to the venue and help distinguish the different dining environments. The ceilings on the ground level, a woven orange checkerboard, bring warmth and dimension to the glass enclosure. The main entrance of the restaurant is a collaged walkway of authentic Singaporean manholes. These manholes are a playful reference to the Bread Street Kitchen. To the left of the walkway sits the venue’s focal point: the bar. The bar is a tribute to the

mezzanine wine cellar in the London location. The back wall of the bar features a series of black metal shelves and large wine fridges. These state-of-the art, temperature-controlled fridges are backlit, which highlights the grid pattern façade. A mounted, metal-bladed fan and decorative pendant lighting further allude to the industrial aesthetic. The bar front is comprised of backlit wire mesh, which marries the black and white marble chevron floor with the polished wood bar top. Mustard leather bar stools complete the indoor bar space. The bar opens up to the Marina, which is lined with palm trees and overlooks Singapore’s Central Business District. Bread Street Kitchen at Marina Bay Sands is an eclectic industrial collection of marble, bronze, mixed timbers, and leather that creates an intimate, bespoke dining experience for a variety of patrons. Overall, the bar at Bread Street Kitchen has masculine undertones that soften as the sun sets. The suar wood and leather compliment the bronze and black metal, creating a dynamic bar environment perfect for a beer among friends or a specialty cocktail like a Jasmine Faith or Brits Spritz. Blueplate Studios stayed true to the brand’s DNA: black and white tiled floors, mustard yellow leather

Exposed pipework, wire mesh, black mirrors, and vintage-inspired lighting and accessories complement the tufted banquettes and dark-stained timber. Black-and-white photos of St. Paul’s Cathedral hang on the wall, alluding to the location of “Bread Street” within the Old City of London. They also enhance the sense of nostalgia that makes the Bread Street Kitchen experience novel, yet familiar.

he iconic wicker Basket chair by Nanna Ditzel may be bound to the ’50s. But for Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola, the ties that bind are still as strong as ever. One of her latest collections, the Vimini is a retro-inspired spin of the Basket chair. The chair, which consists of a basket-like seating with large backrest cushions, has a modernist vibe viewed from the back and sides, which perfectly balances the traditional feel of the braiding. The result is both light and positively inviting. Developed for the Spanish label Kettal, Vimini, which is wicker in Italian and rhymes with Bimini, an island the designer is fond of, was officially launched during Milan Design Week 2018. The pieces feature wooden frames with woven wicker basket-like seats that boast cushions for added comfort. The collection includes sofas, dining chairs, and centre and side tables.

“The goal was to use just the right amount of outdoor wicker with a rougher wooden frame. It doesn’t have the same modernist spirit as the Basket, but it’s familiar enough such that it stirs a memory and makes you feel at home,” Urquiola explains. Another of the designer’s 2018 creations, also for Kettal, is the Roll chair. Not your average upholstered outdoor furniture, the Roll features a powder-coated aluminum frame that supports separate seat and back bolster cushions that are tethered together by colourful straps. Two pins at the top of the vertical supports on either side of the back secure the straps in place, and can be pulled out to render the cushions easily removable during inclement weather. The seat cushion is covered in a semi-transparent weather-proof fabric while the straps come in various hues to set-off the upholstery. The Roll chair is available in two versions, Dining and Club, and is complemented by a side table in two different dimensions. The table tops come in different materials such as aluminium, aluminium/enamel, teak wood or marble, while the ostentatiously oversized aluminium base sits poised on architectonic concrete.

iorgetti’s origins may have been humble, but its furniture products are as inventive 120 years on. Having begun from a small workshop for the production of cushioned furniture in the city of Medea in the north of Italy, where designing a sublime piece of wood furniture was an achievement, its founder, Luigi Giorgetti, had unwittingly laid down the marker for furniture making. Today, Giorgetti is one of Italy’s most respected furniture names. Steeped in the Italian tradition of finely crafted cabinet and furniture-making, Giorgetti products are designed and manufactured in Brianza, Italy, as they have been for over 100 years. Boasting an exuberant freshness and innovative style, Giorgetti’s collections adhere to an overarching imperative: every piece is subject to a rigorous, systematic approach to woodworking developed more than 100 years ago. To mark Giorgetti’s 120th anniversary in 2018, the company has befittingly unveiled a new logo, a book and a film, and a commemorative piece of furniture, and re-issued a duo of works.

The new logo, while retaining its original spiral motif, exemplifies the uniqueness of Giorgetti manufacturing, and is a reverential nod to one of the brand’s icons - the signature curved armrests shaped like antique cane handles of the Progetti armchair, first introduced in 1987. ‘Object to Project – Giorgetti Design since 1898,’ is the name of the film and the book that not only lift the lid on the sophisticated world of high craftsmanship founded in the traditions of the Italian Brianza district, but also pay homage to the key players who have made the company into one of Italy’s leading design brands. The Cabinet of Memories designed by Chi Wing Lo, is a cabinet-sculpture with 120 compartments in maple wood and carbon, and rendered primarily by an ancient and exceptionally precise woodworking technique. To further celebrate the milestone, Dry and 50250 by Matrix, a chair/compact armchair assembled with an interlocking technique, and a highly innovative folding armchair, respectively, have been relaunched.

Designed by world-renowned furniture designer Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia, this seating system is aptly named after coral formations called “atolls”, reflecting the mystifying adaptability of isles and reefs to conform to its oceanic surroundings. nce you get to know the Interface modular flooring system, there’s no going back. Every time you visit a hotel, restaurant or airport that’s been given the Interface treatment, you recognise the unmistakable feel of a flooring design that has been crafted without limits. It’s hard not to appreciate the intricate transitions, subtle texture changes and nature-inspired random patterns. CAPTURING THE SPIRIT BY RONNIE FORD I

f one ever makes the mistake of dismissing landscape painting as monotonous and uninspiring, one only needs to refer to Ronnie’s paintings to dispel such a misconception. The fields, trees, seas and skies of his paintings are not just animate objects that collectively present a conventional beauty that are easily overlooked; instead, they reflect astonishing spirit and character of a place, giving it human qualities and emotions such as joy, contentment, sorrow and anticipation. His paintings can hence be perceived as magnificent projections of the modern desire to flee from the cacophony of everyday life into the calm, vast, meditative spaces of the natural world. Indeed, one of Ronnie’s many talents as an artist is his ability to capture the spirit of a place and its essence. Our memories of a place are always more vivid and palpable in hindsight than seeing it in real time. One key point of Ronnie’s style of painting is that he rarely paints on location, but chooses to “look, photograph and sketch” his immediate impressions of the landscapes he traverses, before returning home to paint them in detail.
