Staff sessions making strides Kent Sport’s staff running sessions on Wednesday lunchtimes are a great way to get away from the working day and take in the fresh air. Rob Brown, Taught Programmes Officer in the School of History, started only a year ago and has seen quite the leap to becoming a better runner. “The Couch to 5K was a great experience [helping me] get to 5K in December 2017 – something I was unconvinced I’d be able to manage. Since then, despite having never been considered that I would be someone who could ‘run’, I have increased the distances I’ve been able to manage, completing my first 10K run in February 2018 and 21K in April 2018. I’m continuing to improve my times and trying to increase my distances further. Everyone at Kent Sport has been really helpful and supportive – the physiotherapy services have also been incredibly helpful in making sure I’m in suitable condition to run! The running groups and other activities that the Sports Development team organise are a really great opportunity. As well as improving my fitness, they have really helped both my mental and physical wellbeing over the last year. The importance of sport and exercise opportunities for staff mental health cannot be overstated, and it provides a fantastic opportunity to meet new people from around the University.” – Rob Brown, Wednesday staff running club
If you’re interested in joining the staff running sessions or any other session for staff, check out the ‘Break Out’ section in this timetable for sessions and times.
Missing the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Take a ‘Break’ and get ‘Out’ of the office and try new activities, meet new people and maintain a healthy lifestyle outside of your daily office environment. Open to all staff. Day

Triathlon ready Imagine doing an Olympic distance triathlon which is 1500m swim, 40k bike ride and 10k run. Sounds like a lot?
In a matter of days after travelling, elite athletes have minimal time to acclimate to their new surroundings. The day before the race, the athletes test out the bicycle course. This is often the only time they get to see the course fully as the roads are often open to the public and very busy. Immediately following, they do a trial swim to familiarise themselves with where the buoys are and which landmarks to sight from.
Afterwards, the athletes will take the time to visit their physiotherapist Vicky Annis to ensure their body is ready for the race. This is imperative for the athletes to know they’re on the top of their game, ready to tackle the challenges ahead. Here at Kent Sport Physiotherapy Clinic that’s exactly what Vicky Annis and the team do regardless if you’re an elite triathlete or looking to be and stay active, our qualified therapists tailor each person’s treatment to individual needs. Email us at physio@kent.ac.uk or call 01227 824 375.

Everyone has a mental health
by Sarah Black
It’s a ‘taboo’ topic that has taken society by storm lately – mental health. Everyone has one, but not many actually discuss it. A mental health illness suggests someone’s mental health is having a negative effect on the person’s mental, emotional and physical bodies, as well as their lifestyle.
Move Wherever the mind goes, the body will follow and vice versa. Exercise releases endorphins, our feel good hormones which have mood boosting benefits. Yoga, meditation and even taking a walk in fresh air can lift spirits and work on areas that need development.
Reviewing your own mental health is an important aspect of being successful. Low moods, anxiety, bereavements, loss of confidence, stress, worry and depression: all the common self-inflicted emotions that we pain ourselves into feeling too often. We all have episodes of these emotions and self-doubt making us into victims of negative emotions. The hardest challenge is believing in our state of mind.
Breathe Purify your breath. The air you breathe holds the life you live. Make sure your breathing passages are clear and you can absorb each flow of breath to fill up your lungs and supply your body with life. When exposed to clean fresh air we can create clarity and supply better oxygen to our brains, muscles, tissues and organs.
Nutrition The importance of nutrition has profound effects on how we feel and the condition of the body. It offers us energy, health, supplies our muscles with power to perform tasks, gives energy to remain focused and assists with memory and vision. Reviewing your diet and addressing any deficiencies is a good step especially if you suffer from low moods and depression. Get your ZZZ’s too sleep is a healer that we all desperately need in order to recharge our ‘internal battery.’
Ambition Feeling lost in a world full of options is often daunting when asked to make a decision about the direction you want to take your life in. What makes you happy? What makes you miserable? Take the time to write down your feelings, make little goals and ultimately give yourself the space to gain perspective on how to get to where you want to be. That also means take up your favourite sport, hobby and adventure that brings out your passions. Deep down you know what you love, so love doing it. Every day may not be good, but there is something good in everyday!
