Health, fitness and performance Oli Prior Health, Fitness and Performance Manager Kent Sport invites you to get fitter and healthier using our top-of-therange equipment. The fitness suite remains one of the best equipped in the county with a full range of cardiovascular equipment, functional training tools, free weights and four Olympic lifting platforms. Health and fitness services The fitness team are on hand to assist new and returning members in achieving their health and lifestyle goals. Kent Sport offer initial fitness consultations, fitness assessments, exercise programmes, nutritional advice and personal training to all members (additional costs may apply). Fitness competitions Kent Sport run 'Xercise Factor' and 'Fit 4 the Beach' competitions designed to change participants' health and lifestyle habits. Following an initial assessment, participants are supported by a fitness team member through a strict regime in order to achieve their goals.
Runfit app Use the RunďŹ t app to save your workout data and connect it with your favourite ďŹ tness apps. With the touch of a button you can connect your smart phone or tablet to OpenHubTM and track your exercise, allowing you to take home the workout results from your favourite cardio machines. Kent Sport provides an exciting range of fitness and dance classes throughout the year. Classes are free to Gold and Silver members, Bronze members pay per class. Class cancellation Please remember to cancel a class if you are unable to attend. Doing so will allow another member to take your place. If you do not attend a class you booked and do not cancel the class, you will be fined and your membership account suspended until outstanding fines are paid.
BodyPump – World renowned body conditioning class using barbells and body weight to improve muscular strength.
Boxercise – Box your way to fitness! Learn the basics of boxing techniques and combinations using the new BoxMaster training rigs.
Booiaka – An intense cardio dance workout that feels like a fun night spent dancing with friends to music you love!
Circuits – Experience the longest running and most popular class on the timetable which runs in the main hall to cater for the circuit fraternity.
Core conditioning – Power your core through challenging body weight exercises and the use of small equipment to strengthen your torso.
Freestyle fitness yoga – Incorporating deep stretches with yoga postures, this class targets flexibility, stability and grace.
Insanity – The online fitness craze comes to the studio. Maximise speed, power and calorie incineration in this high-intensity super class.
Japanese swordmanship – This practice has long been used in Japan to develop health, coordination, concentration and composure.
Legs, bums and tums – Low impact conditioning workout with concentration on the stomach and lower body extremities.
PiYo – Combines the musclesculpting, core-firming benefits of pilates with the strength and flexibility advantages of yoga.
Spinning/freestyle Cycle – Burn calories, build cardio fitness and tone on a stationary bike with strength, endurance and interval classes.
Stretch, tone and relax – A rejuvenating class that nourishes the mind and body with stretching and toning exercises suited to all.
Yoga/express yoga – Relaxing classes exploring a variety of core strength, core stability and breathing exercises.

Professionals Council (HPC) and The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sport and Exercise Medicine (ACPSEM). Our staff have a substantial depth of knowledge and experience of working with multiple sports at all levels, including student sport, and have worked with a variety of National Governing Bodies including British Triathlon, England Netball, British Athletics and British Volleyball. Supporting the local community We have thoroughly enjoyed supporting events such as the Pilgrims Hospices Light Up The City run, Cycle Challenge and the Canterbury 10km run. We have also successfully completed triathlon camps and running workshops here at Kent Sport. The Physiotherapy Clinic is on-site every week at Polo Farm Sports Club in Canterbury to provide services to all members of Polo Farm. Kent Sport is keen to encourage everyone to get active and take part in sport. Our sports development team is continually developing the sports on offer. One-off sports including dodgeball, tennis and basketball are run throughout each term. Full details are available online at kent.ac.uk/sports/intramural Futsal league Futsal is a variant of football played indoors on a smaller pitch, with a smaller ball and between two teams of five players. The surface, ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces. Kent Amateur Football League KAFL was set-up by students with a focus on inclusion and increased participation in 11-a-side football on campus. League matches are played every Saturday and/or Sunday.
Mixed Tagged A rugby league inspired national initiative to encourage new players to enjoy, take part, meet new friends and play a recreational version of tag rugby. Racket leagues and ladders Players of all standards have the opportunity to play other participants at their own convenience. Racket leagues and ladders are available in badminton, squash and tennis. Free to Gold and Silver members, Bronze members pay per activity. SoccerZone SoccerZone is the campus based five-a-side football competition. Five leagues of eight teams are run every Friday at our outdoor facilities. Our activity timetables are available as leaflets and on our website for each term and vacation period, and include activities for everyone to get involved in. Alternatively, visit the Kent Sport events calendar for the full range of activities on offer. kent.ac.uk/sports/events Stamp Out Stress (SOS) During the University exam period, Kent Sport works in conjunction with Kent Union/Student Services to provide a comprehensive programme of activities specifically designed to keep everyone active and stress-free. Activities to date have included the 'Bucking Bull', archery tag, obstacle assault courses and guided bike rides. Annual events Kent Sport run and host several annual events throughout the year, which have included charity events such as the Pilgrims Hospices Firewalk and Cycling Challenge, Santa and Zombie-themed fun runs and UV nights. Holiday sports camps During the University Easter and summer vacation periods, Kent Sport runs EasterZone and SummerZone sports camps for children aged five to 14 years old. Let's Play This academic year, Kent Sport is building on the successful three year Sport England funded Let's Play programme, which aims at bringing engaging 30-minute sessions into the lives of students and staff, regardless of ability or age. Activities such as swimming and UV night are part of the timetable enabling you to meet new people and maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are also various female only sessions in line with the national campaign 'This Girl Can'. So join in and Let's Play! kent.ac.uk/sports/letsplay

The Cycle Hub The Cycle Hub is the newest facility to be built at the Canterbury campus and provides short-term bicycle hire to Kent Sport members. Hire a range of bikes for any type of ride and enjoy cycling around the campus and beyond. Bicycle rental is available in two, four and eight hour slots from Monday to Sunday. Please book early to avoid disappointment. Bikes for hire Kent Sport offer a wide range of high-quality Scott bikes available in women's and men's sizes. The selection includes road, mountain, hybrid and electric bikes. For more details about the types of bikes and equipment for hire, please visit kent.ac.uk/sports/cyclehub
Cycle routes The Kent countryside is undoubtedly a beautiful place, so we have mapped several local routes of varying length and intensity for you to try out. From the beginner ride along Tyler Hill to the challenging ride to Whitstable, there's a ride to suit every ability. Find details and a video of each route on the Cycle Hub webpage. Cycling apps To help you find your way along the mapped rides, we have created helpful routes in Ride With GPS and Strava, which can be downloaded directly to your tablet or phone. Simply search for Kent Sport Cycle Hub to view the route options. Download the apps today and enjoy your ride!
Servicing and maintenance Dr Bike is at the Cycle Hub every Wednesday to provide minor repairs and advice free of charge. Dr Bike also offers chargeable servicing and specialist repairs. Bike cleaning facilities are also available during the Cycle Hub opening hours.

Inter College Cup A multi-event sports competition for students at the University of Kent, played between the colleges that make up the Canterbury campus. Despite the natural competitive element that comes with any tournament, the general ethos is one of involvement, participation and fair play, with every team welcoming players of all abilities. Sports include badminton, basketball, cricket, football, netball, rowing and tennis. If you are interested in adding new sports to the Inter College Cup calendar, email sportsdevelopment@kent.ac.uk Student sports clubs There are more than 50 student sports clubs at Kent offering something for everyone. Whatever your sport, or even if you have never played, you will have the opportunity to try sport and play socially or competitively.
Varsity sports competition An annual tournament which takes place in February and March. Students at the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University go head-to-head to be crowned Varsity winners. Come and support your team in one of the sporting highlights of the year. University sports scholarships The University of Kent is committed to delivering sporting excellence and is proud to offer scholarships to students with outstanding sporting ability. Kent Sport will work with those awarded a scholarship on a programme of strength and conditioning, training and physiotherapy support in association with their formal training and development. Staff sports tournament
An inter-departmental staff competition for all ages and abilities, run by the sports development team within Kent Sport. You do not have to be a member of Kent Sport to take part in the Vice-Chancellor's Cup. Participants have a fantastic opportunity to meet with staff from other departments and get active in a friendly and relaxed environment. Running from January to September each year, a variety of activities and challenges take place including: basketball, netball, racket sports, school sports day, ultimate frisbee and exciting bonus rounds. The competition ends with a pub quiz and presentation evening in September.
If you would like to take part in the Vice-Chancellor's Cup 2018, talk to your department team captain. Alternatively, if you do not currently have a department team, individuals can request to be added to another team. The Pavilion CafĂŠ Bar is a great place to relax with a fully licensed bar, good food, fantastic viewing balconies, free WiFi and Sky Sports. You won't find a better place on campus to meet up with friends. Our counter service menu offers delicious freshly prepared food to suit any appetite, with special menus during events like Varsity and the Cycling Festival. The bar also offers beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks so you can watch all the action on the pitches while enjoying an ice-cold drink. Frequently asked questions What is the difference between Gold and Silver membership? Gold membership offers access to the fitness suite throughout our opening hours. Silver membership offers access to the fitness suite weekdays between 7am to 9am and 2pm to 4pm, weekends and Bank Holidays 10am to 12pm. How long will it take for my membership to activate? Your membership will be added to your Kent One card and will work immediately upon receipt. If you have any problems with your card, please ask at reception for assistance. You will need to either check in at reception or the kiosk on each visit. What happens if I forget my card? We operate a three strikes policy. The fourth time that you forget your membership card you will be refused entry. Will my membership cease once I have graduated? Student membership runs until the 31 August each year. Your card will work for the duration of your membership. What student sports clubs are available? Student clubs are run by Team Kent, part of Kent Union. A list of clubs is available online at kentunion.co.uk/activities/sport If I am a member of a student club do I have to join Kent Sport as well? If your club uses Kent Sport facilities for training and BUCS competitions then yes, membership is required.

Do I need an orientation before I can use the facilities? Yes, the quickest and easiest way to do an orientation is to watch the video online. Please see the link below. Physical orientations and tours are available to book at reception. youtube.com/user/unikentsports How far in advance can I book activities? Gold and Silver members can book up to seven days in advance at reception, at the kiosks, via our online service kentsport.kent.ac.uk/horizons or by calling 01227 823 623 or 01227 827 223. Bronze members can book three days in advance at reception. Do I need to book classes, courts and pitches? Yes, all classes, courts and pitches need to be booked in advance. You should keep your receipt to gain access to your class booking. Book early to avoid disappointment as the most popular activities are in high demand. What should I do if I cannot attend a class that I have booked? Online bookings can be cancelled online by the member that made the booking. If you booked by phone, at the kiosk or in person, you must cancel your booking by emailing sportstudio@kent.ac.uk no later than 30 minutes prior to the class start time. Failure to cancel will result in a fine being applied and your membership account being suspended until outstanding fines are paid. Attendance checks are conducted periodically for all classes. Can I bring a guest? Guests of Gold and Silver members can get access to Kent Sport facilities for ÂŁ6. Alternatively a ÂŁ1 Bronze membership will be offered. The guest then pays for the activity they wish to attend.

Are rackets, balls and other sports equipment available for hire? Kent Sport Gold and Silver membership includes use of rackets, basketballs, netballs and footballs without additional charge. Items such as shuttlecocks, table tennis, squash and tennis balls can be purchased at reception. Bronze members can hire equipment for £1 per item. Do you have personal trainers in the fitness suite? Yes, our fully qualified fitness staff are on hand to offer advice, programmes and consultations to meet your requirements, including personal training. Can I book a fitness consultation? Yes, we offer fitness and nutrition advice and guidance. Members can book an initial fitness consultation at reception. Consultations are with a member of the fitness team to determine an exercise path. For prices see kent.ac.uk/sports/healthandfitness or ask at the Kent Sport reception. Who can access the Kent Sport Physiotherapy Clinic? The clinic is open to students, staff and the wider community. Please refer to page 9 for more information. Does my injury need to be sports related? Your injury does not need to be sports related. You can sustain musculoskeletal injuries in many different ways from day-to-day activities to slips and falls. If you do have any doubts, please contact the clinic. We are always happy to help. Do you support Inclusive Fitness? Kent Sport supports Inclusive Fitness and are committed to ensuring that all members can access all of our facilities. How do I hire a bicycle? Mountain, road, hybrid and electric bicycles can be hired by visiting the Cycle Hub at the Pavilion. Hire is free for Gold and Silver members. Bronze members pay per hire. See page 16 for more details. How do I use my Boughton Golf Club membership? Gold and Silver members get £99 membership at Boughton Golf Club for free. To use this, please visit the golf club and reference Kent Sport when making a booking. How do I access Invicta East Kent Athletics Track? Gold and Silver members can use the Canterbury athletics track for free when Invicta Athletics are training. Visit invictaeastkentac.org.uk. and see the coaching tab for times. Who can apply for a sports scholarship? Sports scholarships of between £300 to £5,000 are available to student sportsmen and sportswomen from any sport who compete (at least) at county level or equivalent. Students must commit to representing the University of Kent in BUCS competitions at the highest level. What parking is available at Kent Sport? Kent Sport public members can use the visitor parking behind the Sports Centre or at the Pavilion and claim a refund from reception for up to two hours. Kent Sport staff and student members can use their usual campus parking permit. Accessible parking is also available at the Sports Centre and the Pavilion. Do you have a swimming pool? No, but there are pools within a ten-minute walk of the University. Kent Sport is hoping to develop a swimming pool in the future.
