Hello everyone! I hope everyone has had a good first month back at school! Here are just a few updates on what has been going on with KSUIF. We have officially begun planning our premiere for our feature film Unlucky! We will premiere our film in Cartwright Hall on April 28th. The doors open at 7:00, and the film begins at 8:30. We will have more information about how you can get tickets in the following few weeks. This event will sell out, so please get your tickets as soon as they are available! As far as our other projects go, Heartbeat is near completion and once editing is completed we will be setting up another premiere for that! We will begin production on our docu-

umentary film “Our Voices” very soon. If you have not signed up already to be involved with that and are interested, please send us an email. We are also still looking for new projects to do! If you have an idea for a project, please come see us in our office so we can get you started and have you fill out our paperwork! We are also willing to work with you to help get your personal projects started! Also, we are planning on having a few upcoming events! These not only include our next big meeting, but also screenings of our past films and some camera and audio workshops! Be on the lookout! At our next big meeting, we will be announcing the genre for our next feature film! You don’t want to miss this! You don’t want to miss this. Pick-up shoots are still underway. Second Unit is looking for volunteers to help finish up some of their remaining shots for Unlucky. Volunteers would get an email about when and where the shoot would be taking place and if you can’t make it don’t worry about you can still come to future second unit shoots. Finally, We are looking for volunteers to work on getting ads for the Unlucky program, DVD graphics, posters for the film, reaching out to off and on campus sponsors, and someone to work on promotional items such as t-shirts and hot cards for the premiere.

UPDATE We are currently working on finishing up HeartBeat which is directed by Brandon Lazenko. It is a 3 episode dance concept video and we are still waiting on a premiere date. They still have one scene to film and the more help the better! This would be a great opportunity for those who want to see if film is for them or not. More information will come out as soon as we hear anything. Director Brandon Lazenko and actor PJ Camargo pose at last weekend’s shoot.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: The Virgin By Alyssa Standen Suicides

Standen’s VHS copy of The Virgin Suicides.

If you are a teenager seeking refuge in a film

that understands you in every dark sense, look no further. The 2000 film The Virgin Suicides delivers suspense, guilt, loss and rebellion in the most photographically beautiful sense. Directed by Sophia Coppola, she takes on the novel originally by Jeffrey Eugenides about the story of the five Lisbon sisters and their suicidal demise. The film follows the neighborhood boys of the Lisbon family as they obsess about their deaths even decades after the events occurred. Shot with photographic style and a cold color scheme throughout, the eerie sense in the film is overwhelming as you follow the boys in their attempt to piece the suicides together. Being my personal favorite film of all time, I recommend this to anyone looking to let their emotions run wild and show you the sadness, confusion, and beauty of the human mind.

Hollywood Living with Interviewed by Kendra Bates Abby Hermosilla Q. Why were you out in L.A./Cali?

A. I was in LA originally to work on a movie for three weeks. From there, I worked with someone who wanted to bring me on to another movie that they were working on. So in the end I was there for 2 months. Q. How did you get the opportunity to work in LA? A. I got the opportunity to work there because a 1st AD who I have worked with in Ohio before got hired on the movie in LA. Since I have worked with him before and he likes the way I work, he decided to fly me out there to join the team. Getting work is all about connections. Q. Who did you meet/encounter? A. Some people I met out there was Oliver Stone, Sean Stone, Ron Jeremy (e was a a cast member on one of the films I worked on), some of the cast form pitch perfect, Danny Trejo, a lot of people really known on vines, and then last I met a lot of dance people because the second movie I worked on was a dance movie, so I met people who have worked on Honey, Step Up, etc. CONT. on pg 5

Kendra Bates cont.

Q. What was the biggest thing you

brought back from this professional experience? A. The biggest thing I brought back from the experience is a whole different work ethic. I have worked on numerous movies and commercials in Ohio and I have pretty much found my niche. It has gotten to the point now that if any movie, commercial, or TV show comes into Ohio, I always get the call to work on it and I don’t have to go through an interview or anything like that because people reference my name to higher ups and put in a good word and from there I get hired. It is pretty easy for me now. However, in LA, everyone has to work hard to get their work and work even harder to keep it. I saw three different people get fired within the first week on one of the shows. The UPM’s in LA are way more strict on who they keep around, so if they see anyone slacking or if the thought “why am I paying

them so much to be here” even pops up in their head, then to them there is no need to keep you around. Working in Ohio, I am pretty comfortable, but in LA I wasn’t used to constantly trying to prove myself. I did have a little bit of a hard time at first since I was so used to doing things the Ohio way. In LA, they are way more on top of their game and do things a lot differently. Another thing I also learned, and this should be everywhere, is to never say names when you are talking about someone. The film industry in LA is massive, and if you don’t know someone personally there is always a friend or a friend of a friend who knows someone, so if you say anything negative or wrong and put a name to it, it will come back and haunt you. This didn’t happen to me, but it did happen to someone on set and they were fired, so you definitely have to watch what you say and who you say it to. Also, being in LA really open my eyes to all of the different opportunities. People always say it is so hard getting a job in LA, but if you know the right people, there are endless amounts of work.

REAL LATE REELS

Q. Any advice for getting involved in these kind

of opportunities? A. Advice for getting involved in the industry is to humble yourself. Even a person who has spent four years in film school isn’t even prepared for the industry unless they have worked in it. You have to realize that you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. You can not go onto a set and act like you know everyone, that will just make people laugh at you and not take you seriously. You need to humble yourself and almost forget about what you learned in college and focus on what you are learning on set. For the most part, some things people don’t “teach” you on a set. You have to open your eyes and pay attention and teach yourself. They are professionals and don’t have time to waste explaining things to you. The best way to learn, if you get hired on a set is to intern first (which in some cases isn’t paid) and then ask other PA’s on set any questions you may have. Also, keep your contacts relevant. The only way to keep pushing in the industry is work with someone and stay in contact with them and network. Those people will bring you on more jobs.
