Every year, KSUIF creates a short documentary entitled “Our Voices” honoring the tremendous social impacts of Martin Luther King Jr. We have had the absolute pleasure of receiving the McGruder Award for Excellence in Advancing Diversity the past two years. We are looking for students who are interested in getting involved with this year’s project, especially in covering social activism on campus. Please contact Buddy Candela (acandel3kent.edu) if interested.

The Magnificent Seven is, as it's name suggests, magnificent. This brilliant western is a true American classic that will continue to please audiences for years to come. Based on the 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai, this masterpiece is phenomenal. Not only is this film a great western, but it is also one of the finest films ever made. It is impossible to talk about The Magnificent Seven without first discussing its iconic music. The score by Elmer Bernstein is nothing short of legendary. It perfectly sets the tone of the film and completely captivates the audience. Another crowning achievement is the remarkable ensemble of characters. Similar to films like Ocean’s Eleven and The Expendables, The Magnificent Seven has an elite team of talent. Yul Bryner is fantastic as the stern and heroic Christ Adams. He is the central character of the film, and the one who brings our gang of heroes together. In the role of Vin Tanner, we have praised actor Steve McQueen. In every film he’s in, McQueen has an en-
(1960) McQueen. In every film he’s in, McQueen has an endearing quality. Whether it's in an exciting adventure like The Great Escape or a ridiculous (but awesome) cult film such as The Blob, we can always latch on to McQueen and root for him the entire time. Eli Wallach gives a striking performance as the maniacal Calvera. Best known for The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly, Wallach is not stranger to westerns. Calvert is a dirty rat, and definitely a villain you love to hate. Despite not getting as much development as the others, Charles Bronson's character extremely memorable. This brute leads to the most uplighting, and the most heartbreaking scenes in the film. John Sturges is in the director's chair and does an extraordinary job. He creates outstanding atmosphere and fully emerges you. Sturges welcomes everybody to the wild wild west. His directing is as untouchable as Elliot Ness. *zing* Overall, The Magnificent Seven is a wild ride. Stellarmusic, acting, and directing make this film a must see.
