COMMUNITY
Movie Recommendation of the Week: Blue is the Warmest Color By Codi Steffen
A coming-of-age story that will truly take your breath away, Blue is the Warmest Color (French: La Vie d’Adèle – Chapitres 1 & 2 – “The Life of Adèle – Chapters 1 & 2”) was a mesmerizing love story. Written, produced, and directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, the story of Adèle and her developing a relationship with an older girl named Emma is rich with passion and drama. Occurring over the course of several years, starting with Adèle, played by Adèle Exarchopoulos, dating a boy from school, it becomes clear after walking past a blue-haired Emma, that Adele wants something different than what she has. Adèle and Emma quickly develop a relationship that is so exciting on the screen that you can feel the love and electricity between them as if shocking you in your seat. Emma, played by Léa Seydoux, fascinates Adèle, and the audience, with her intriguing questions about life, philosophy, and art. Although this movie is poignant and beautifully made, it may be one you want to avoid watching with your parents. Included are a few very graphic sex scenes, which had the movie reach its NC-17 rating. Truly the reason this movie is so successful is due to Adèle Exarchopoulos. She is such an incredible actress, that requires very little for someone to understand what is happening within her head; Exarchopoulos was able to communicate with just a look on her face. It was moving to watch her go from happiness to pure torture without any dialogue. Her performance is one of someone beyond her years; not only was she able to easily communicate feelings without a word, she had such chemistry with every character she came across throughout the movie. Exarchopoulos had a gravitational pull, if you will, when it came to both men and woman throughout the film. She was enduring, happy, beautiful, and simple enough that everyone could love her easily. Blue is the Warmest Color has such a natural feel, be-

Post Film School Graduation: Dylan Bartolovich Interviewed by
Abby Hermosilla
KSUIF alum Dylan Bartolovich tells us what to expect as a recent media production grad especially when looking for work in film.
Q. You’ve worked as a PA on quite a few sets already; how would someone find opportunities such as these? A. Finding opportunities like these is just a matter of grabbing it while it’s out there. Don’t say no to any opportunity, not at our stage of the game. You can’t afford to miss out on a connection. If you don’t present yourself like a headstrong-hardworking person willing to do whatever you need to do to get what your goal is, then people will not recommend you. For The Bye Bye Man I was just background for two days. I was a college student at a house party and a college student walking down the sidewalk, nothing major at all. However, being on set with these people instantly opened me up to other opportunities. While on set, I was talking to another background actress. I mentioned to her I was just here to see what it’s like on set and that my real goal was to PA somehow. She thought I was perfect to work for a company that was filming three Ford commercials. CONT. on pg 6 tween writing, acting, and the handheld camera approach to each scene, that it almost felt more like a documentary than a fiction film. Having up to 400 hours of footage to work with, this almost 3 hour French drama, is captivating and heart-breaking.

Post-Graduation cont. cials. Through word of mouth she got me hired as an Art Department PA. That position then looked good on my resume to land me the position in the Locations Department for the Arnold Schwarzenegger film 478 I currently have.
Q. What should DMP/JMC majors expect after graduation? A. After graduation, it’s not easy. That’s
just how it is for us. It’s not like other fields were there’s plentiful opportunities because you happen to have a degree. It takes some time, and It takes some hard research. You just have to keep at it. I can’t tell you how many positions I have been turned down, before finally being offered one I actually enjoy. Some advice for finding PA positions: Staffmeup.com and build that LinkedIn page up like no other.
an Associate Producer and Location Manager for the feature film Unlucky opened up so many doors for me, not because the movie is the best movie of 2016 or anything, but because of what I learned on set everyday, 12 hours a day, for 2 months. I put in over 500 hours in one summer to one feature film, and it has been the best education I have ever had. I sincerely thank the crew I had, and of course Traci Williams for the guided support. Doing that feature is honestly as real as it gets, no exaggerations. From union rules, to positions of departments, to the hierarchy that NEEDS to be followed, every bit of Unlucky’s production prepared me for the real deal I am facing today. You won’t find anything like it. So DO take advantage of it.
above. If you’re friendly with everyone and show a positive attitude, It won’t take long before people know who you are, know what you do, and learn that they can count on you for your job. Don’t be stupid, use common sense, and for God’s sake, “STAY IN YOUR OWN FREAKIN’ LANE.”
Q. Any highlights from being on set? A. Highlights from being on set? Well,
I can say that yesterday I was able to have David Blaine do a magic trick with me while waiting to set up the next scene with Schwarzenegger. 478 also filmed in an active airport and jail which was a ton of fun.
Q. Any advice for students hopQ. Were you able to take away ing to pursue PA positions? anything from JMC/KSUIF when A. Advice for future PAs? I would say the biggest piece of advice for peoworking on legitimate Hollywood ple wanting to be successful on set is to sets? If so, what? KNOW EVERYONE’S NAME AND A. To be completely honest, the only POSITION. It is extremely important to A shot of Bartolovich on the set of Unvital tools I learned throughout my whole know and understand what each crew lucky as Location Manager, aiding with KSU career, came from KSUIF. Being member does and who they are under set design.
